QUEENSBOROUGH MAN CYCLES TO FIGHT CANCER

Appeal could cut taxes at the Quay

In his brother’s memory BY THERESA MCMANUS REPORTER tmcmanus@royalcityrecord.com

BY BRENT RICHTER REPORTER brichter@royalcityrecord.com

More than a dozen Quayarea condo residents will be paying less in property tax this year thanks to a successful appeal of property assessments led by a local community advocate. Back in January, New Westminster resident James had a look at the property assessment for his Quay condo and saw a 52 per cent increase, well above the New Westminster average of 9.11 per cent. Crosty said there had been no significant improvements made to the property or the neighbourhood to justify the increase that he and many of his neighbours would be expected to pay taxes on, so he launched an appeal of the assessment for himself and 28 other residents. Following several calls and two meetings with B.C. Assessment agents, Crosty and his neighbours were able to reduce the assessed value of 16 of the residences by $476,000. “The assessment lady that was in charge said she thought we did such a thorough job, they’d consider hiring us to work for them,” Crosty said with a laugh. Crosty said the community was able to convince B.C. Assessment that the initial assessments were overzealous and based on market prices of ◗Taxes Page 8

Simon Jukes may be riding solo during this weekend’s Ride to Conquer Cancer, but he knows he won’t really be alone. Jukes is riding in honour of his younger brother David, who died of cancer in October 2009 at the age of 27. Growing up in Birmingham, England, Simon developed an interest in juggling and performing at a young age; David was more interested in mountain biking, golfing and playing his Xbox. The Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer benefiting the B.C. Cancer Foundation is a two-day bike trip through the Pacific Northwest, beginning in Vancouver and ending in Seattle. Money raised from the June 18/19 event supports research and new cancer therapies. While some participants take part in the ride as teams, Jukes is cycling solo. “This is something I need to do on my own,” said the Queensborough resident. “It’s almost like a personal mission.” Jukes goal is to highlight the fact that many people will be affected by cancer in their lifetimes. “It was such a shock when David was diagnosed with cancer,” he said. “He was 26.” Jukes was working on a cruise ship in December 2008 when he received a call from his mom telling him he needed to come home. Returning home to England, he learned his brother had been diagnosed with testicular, stomach, and lung cancer. During the time that David underwent chemotherapy and fought the cancer, Jukes was in and out of England, dividing his time between work and visits home. Although David’s cancer diagnosis was a shock because he was young and fit, he later told family he had found a lump a couple months earlier but didn’t tell anyone. The B.C. Cancer Foundation notes that there is often a stigma surrounding “below the waist” cancers.

Back in fashion: Sandro Massullo of Massullo Music on Hastings Street, with a ukulele. The little four-stringed instrument has been making a comeback in popularity in the local area – including at Century House, where a ukulele ensemble has become popular.

Ukuleles bring good vibrations The little four-string instrument is gaining popularity – suppliers can’t keep up with the demand BY STEFANIA SECCIA REPORTER editorial@royalcityrecord.com

While some people picture a luau or the recent ukulele covers of Radiohead hits by independent recording artist Amanda Palmer – there’s no telling why ukuleles have suddenly become the sought-after instrument of choice. “They’ve really taken off the last six months,” Burnaby’s Massullo Music owner, Sandro Massullo, said about his ukulele collection. “I think there’s quite a bit online available for them, for people to learn. They’re small, affordable – they’re a fad right now.” The 10-year-old music store on Hastings

has sold the ukuleles on and off again but recently brought them back six months ago. Since putting them on their storefront window, Massullo hardly been able to keep up with the sales. “No one in the industry can put their finger on it,” he said about people’s sudden desire for them. “It’s a good seller. Better than guitars these days.” Although Massullo admits to not having mastered the four-string, sub-branch of the guitar family, he said there’s plenty of classes offered in the Lower Mainland. “For awhile the suppliers couldn’t keep up with the demand,” he added. In New Westminster, the Century House Ukulele Activity Group has been going strong with the instrument for the past three years. “It’s been really quite something,” said Shirley Miller, who started the activity group. “There’s been more and more interest in the ukulele.” Century House is a seniors’ community

centre for ages 50 and up. Since the group started they’ve offered programs for beginners, intermediate and have formed a performers’ group called the Century House Ukulele Ensemble. The group, whose members are aged 60 to 70, started when Miller joined some friends in taking ukulele classes. With her background in playing the piano, singing and folk dancing it made her transition into playing the ukulele easier. “It’s been going quite nicely,” she said. “It’s very good for the brain and the soul. We don’t play without singing also. Singing is just super.” Miller described how practising music not only makes the mind sharp, but playing it in a group is “thrilling.” Miller, 68, added that a new program just started for students from New Westminster Secondary School because the instrument is perfect for all ages. “It’s a neat sound to hear several uku-

leles together,” she noted. “At first I didn’t really like the sound. But there’s something special about the sound of it, especially several together.” Miller said the popularity lies not only in its unique sound, but also because it’s painless to learn. “There’s only four strings, all you need to know is three to four chords,” Miller said as to why the ukulele has become so popular. “Some songs you only need to know one chord. … You can play anything.” There are many opportunities for jam sessions in the Lower Mainland, according to Miller. There’s the Vancouver Ukulele Circle, which meets the third Tuesday of every month. “Just look at the different parks and recreation guides,” she added. “The Langley Ukulele Ensemble is playing a special concert (in October), and there’s a workshop this fall open to all ages.” Despite the small size, it seems the ukulele has a big appeal for those of all ages.

youth under the age of 20 in Canada. In recent weeks, three children have fallen from windows in New Westminster and Burnaby – in one case, a two-year-old child passed away as a result of her injuries. It is difficult to comprehend the magnitude of this family’s loss, and our hearts go out to them. Sadly, they are not alone: a 2009 Child and Youth Injury report from the Public Health Agency of Canada lists falls as one of the main categories of unintentional injury deaths in the country.

Though motor vehicle traffic accidents by far lead the way, drownings – particularly in the summer time – falls, poisonings, suffocation and fires account for dozens of deaths each year. The good news is those numbers have been decreasing since the early ‘90s as people become more aware of car seat guidelines and household safety. The bad news is that there are still far too many families suffering the loss of a child in accidents which might have been prevented. Even one is too many.

IN MY OPINION

Traffic talk is troubling

Dear Editor:

An open letter to New Westminster city council: I attended my first ever New Westminster city council meeting on May 31. I was impressed by the sheer number of topics dealt with, as well as the professionalism demonstrated in the debate. Unfortunately, I was dismayed to learn that the United Boulevard extension project has not been put to rest. Further concerns were raised by the comments by the mayor of Coquitlam. I can’t help but feel that this is all connected to TransLink’s Pattullo Bridge announcement. I believe this announcement is a golden opportunity to solve our traffic congestion problem by diverting truck and commuter traffic around New Westminster rather than through it. By reposition-

ing the new Pattullo Bridge in the vicinity of King Edward in Coquitlam and connecting it to Highway 1, we would minimize commuter and truck traffic not only to New Westminster but also to Coquitlam and Burnaby by diverting it to the South Fraser Perimeter Road. The strategy would free New Westminster to redevelop its waterfront and the traffic corridors running through the centre of the city. This is a historic opportunity to follow the example of a number of harbour cities, notably Boston and Seattle, to remake our waterfront into a people-friendly place. Burnaby could improve the livability of the Cariboo and Canada Way corridors. Coquitlam can alleviate its traffic congestion issues without impinging on New Westminster. This is a win-win situation all around. There perhaps will be arguments that the cost is ◗Traffic Page 7

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Traffic issues need work ◗ continued from page 6

prohibitive. I would suggest that such an assumption does not take into account the cost of upgrading the transit corridors through New Westminster and Burnaby let alone the overall benefits associated with making New Westminster a model riverfront city if the new bridge simply replaced the old one. Attempts to resurrect the United Boulevard extension without integration into an overall comprehensive plan that makes sense must be met with a firm no. Instead, I believe New Westminster council and its residents need to stand together to exert influence on all concerned stakeholders on the placement of the Pattullo Bridge. If we work together, we can have a fair say in the placement of the bridge and the creation of a transportation plan that is worthy of our city and that also works for our neighbours. So what’s the alternative? Dear Editor:

The Record was generous enough to give Dawn Black five columns for her diatribe on the HST. In all that space I saw not one word on what her party would do instead to maintain services for the people of B.C. I haven’t heard her leader, Adrian Dix, give an answer either, even when asked point blank. Like most, I’m not happy with how it was instituted, but going back and adding hundreds of staff to government payroll to collect two taxes for all businesses to submit is not only shooting ourselves in the foot, it will hurt the province for many years to come. I was just looking for an alternative from Dawn Black. Is it jacking up income tax for everyone so people and businesses start exiting the province again? If that’s Adrian’s plan, he should come out with it now rather than a back-dated memo later. It’s relatively easy being the opposition and simply opposing everything. Like a fan criticizing the team from the couch. It’s all fine until you trade spots and have to take a position on the ice. Dave Nickel, New Westminster

Silken wrapper not so nice

Dear Editor:

I was surprised to read the building plan article (City eyes building plan, The

Record, June 8) that begins by describing an upcoming public hearing as “shaping up to be a lively affair.” The hearing the article refers to is about a contentious rezoning of residential property on 273 and 275 Sherbrooke St. The application for this rezoning would involve changing single-storey residential property into a four-storey institutional bunker at the corner of Sherbrooke and Kelly streets, which are located in a sleepy corner of lower Sapperton. The silken wrapper that gently embraces this proposal is the promised inclusion of a 37-seat daycare and 10 housing units dedicated to independent social housing for women. According to The Record article, the City of New Westminster has received a majority of favourable responses for the application from members of the public who submitted 59 emails and letters of support. The article also reports that, in addition to these missives, there was a submission of a petition signed by seven people who are concerned about the impact of the introduction of commercial land use into a residential neighbourhood. The article continues to note that several people appeared at the May 30 council meeting to comment on the project. The article does not say what the general tone of the comments were, but that is where the obfuscation of the facts appears to abate. I was at that council meeting, and I would invite the author of the article to take the time to review both the video and minutes in more exacting detail. My perception of the meeting was unlike that presented by The Record, and I can list these differences (see editor’s note below). Had the author chosen to interview any of the attendees from Sapperton, prior to writing the article, it might have been more factual. I hope that representatives from The Record might actually deign to make an appearance at the June 27 public hearing at city hall. It would be a shame to have to rely only on half-baked Internet postings for a summary of the events. You might begin to wonder if the silken wrapper that gently embraces the development proposal is actually more like the outer crust of a day-old cat turd in the flower bed.

New Westminster cops help keep order at riot BY BRENT RICHTER REPORTER brichter@royalcityrecord.com

Some of New Westminster’s finest were among the police that millions of Canadians watched trying to temper Wednesday night’s riot in downtown Vancouver. New Westminster Police Service Sgt. Gary Weisaar said New Westminster officers were on hand at several locations in the Lower Mainland where trouble was expected. “We dispatched a number of officers to assist the Vancouver police at yesterday’s Stanley Cup playoff. We had also sent officers to Abbotsford to assist their police officers, and we participated in the Lower Mainland tactical troop,” Weishaar said in an email. “We predominately utilized our patrol officers for these support positions and supplemented our city patrols by bringing in our police officers from various internal sections. Our members focused on Sky Train stations and wherever else they were required to ensure public safety.” follow us on

More than 100,000 fans packed the streets in downtown Vancouver to watch the Canucks take one last stab at winning the Stanley Cup. After their 4-0 loss to the Boston Bruins, some in the crowd began vandalizing cars. The vandalism quickly escalated to a full-blown riot, resulting in burned vehicles, smashed store windows, looting, fights and confrontations with police. Vancouver Police Chief Jim Chu said it took about three hours to quell the riot. He said he suspects many of those who set fires, smashed windows and looted planned ahead and came looking for trouble. While over 200 people, including nine police officers, were taken to hospital in the melee, Weishaar said New Westminster police were not among them. “There were several calls for service related to intoxication and nuisance behaviour at the conclusion of the hockey game, however, we are pleased to advise that none of our officers were injured,” he said.

local man’s contributions to the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra have not gone unnoticed. Tony Antonias was recently asked to come to the Orpheum to discuss some Vancouver Symphony Orchestra business. He was told he would be able to stay for the symphony’s rehearsal of Mahler’s Symphony No. 1. “They called me in because Mahler is one of my favourite composers,” he said. Antonias added he was initially reluctant to go because he was doing other work at the time – putting together pages for the Canada Day supplement in The Record. But he agreed to attend, not knowing he’d been set up. Conductor Bramwell Tovey presented Antonias with a framed photograph

of all of the members of the Vancouver Symphony, and the musicians signed the matting around the photograph. An inscription reads: “In appreciation of five decades of outstanding radio advertising for the Vancouver Symphony Society.” “I was overwhelmed,” he said. “And then he (Tovey) said, ‘There’s Part 2.’ That’s when the pass came in.” Antonias also received a lifetime pass to the VSO, which provides him with two complimentary tickets to any regular season concert in any VSO season. Although Antonias retired from CKNW in January 1995, he continues to do radio ads for a number of clients, including the Vancouver Symphony. “The symphony, to me since Day 1, has been a labour of love,” he said. “It started way back in ’55 when I joined ‘NW.” Program director Hal Davis called Antonias into his office and asked him to close the door. Antonias thought he was gong to be canned, but Davis proceeded to ask him what type of music he liked. “I told him Rosemary

Clooney, Frank Sinatra. I said, I love the symphony,” he said. “He said, ‘congratulations, you have just won the Vancouver Symphony account for the station.’”

Heroes help out

Some minor lacrosse players in New Westminster have been getting helpful tips from their heroes. Dan Richardson, president and general manager of the New Westminster Senior Salmonbellies, said New Westminster Minor Lacrosse Association asked about the potential of Senior Bellies offering clinics for minor players. He said the team was happy to oblige, as it’s a way of giving back to the community. “Our guys have stepped up to the plate,” he said. “Our guys really enjoy it.” Jeff Zywicki, one of the newest additions to the Bellies’ roster, has been assisted by teammates including Alex Gajic. “I get lots of positive feedback from the parents,” Richardson noted. “I see them at the games or they email me.”

Sheila Day’s son Callum is among the kids who have attended the clinics. “I absolutely love them,” she said via email. “The kids are so excited to learn from the players that they see at the senior games. My son was quoting the entire Bellies schedule to Jeff Zywicki at the clinic following the season opener! “The clinics are fun, the kids look up to the senior players and they work extra hard during practice, imagining that they could be a Senior Bellie. I would love to see the clinics continue next year.” Jamie Stewart, president of New Westminster Minor Lacrosse Association, said the minor, junior and senior teams have been working together on various initiatives. “It builds excitement, energy in the game,” he said about the clinics. “These little guys look up to the big guys. The kids love it.” Stewart said there are more than 30 nonparent coaches in New Westminster Minor Lacrosse, ranging from a 15-year-old girl to

Senior Salmonbellies. (Ian Hawksbee and Jamie Floris are coaching the Midget A team.) Stewart said clinics and various events help get more kids in New

Westminster involved in lacrosse. Do you know of something happening in the city? Do you have an idea for Around Town? Email Theresa, tmc manus@royalcityrecord.com.

ARCHIE & DALE MILLER

T

he history of the Chinese people of New Westminster is filled with many stories, some good and some bad. We use both types of stories on tours and in presentations, as the mixture of accounts enables a participant to understand the community and its daily life and routine. The following article and advertisement are from the same issue of an 1887 Mainland Guardian, and they offer an interesting glimpse of local commerce and Chinese-owned and -operated stores. There were several other promi-

nent Chinese businesses in the town, but this newspaper article is quite special. The advertisement for Kwong On Wo and Company noted that their recently opened new store was in a brick block on Front Street. They were promoted as importers and dealers in “Oriental fancy goods, teas and general merchandise.” Kwong On Wo and Company was a well-known business with many connections not just in the immediate area, but elsewhere in the province, and they brought sizeable amounts of goods into the country. Linked to this ad was a very interesting article describing the new store, ending by encouraging the reader to “see advertisement on next page.” We have seen the ad, now the description. “The store of Kwong On Wo and Company on

Front Street is well worth seeing. There is a splendid assortment of teas, fresh from China, and a great many curiosities. The well cushioned Oriental chairs for customers, the large mirror, and the whole surroundings, are suited to a place where business is done in absence of flutter and fuss. In fact the store is a gem.” One aspect of this description that is quite intriguing is the mention of soft chairs for customers to sit on. Seats were often provided for customers in shops of the day, but they were usually stools or wooden chairs. Well cushioned “Oriental chairs” were definitely not the norm. The mention of “the large mirror” is also of interest. To the Chinese, a mirror is a powerful mover of energy, a repellent of negative energy, a

provider of added light and spaciousness to a place, portraying a positive self image and clarity of mind. Perhaps the mirror was simply for customers to view a new hat or shawl, but maybe the store owners were offering much more in their place of business. The phrase in the advertisement that states that business is “done in the absence of flutter and fuss” really does describe the company’s operations. Customers are intended to be comfortable, relaxed and of a positive mind to carry out a transaction, so that, having seen the excellence of the “fancy goods, teas and general merchandise” they will be to spend some money in the Kwong On Wo store. This is a fascinating glimpse, however small, into a business in early New Westminster.

Kate Reid kicks off Pride festivities

She’s been gathering praise across the country for her second album, I’m Just Warming Up. Now Kate Reid is coming to the Royal City to prove just why she’s making herself such a favourite of critics and fans alike. The Vancouver-based singer, songwriter and storyteller is bringing her talents to the Coming Home Café to kick off New West Pride 2011 this summer. She’ll be at the Coming Home Café at 753 Sixth. St. on Thursday, Aug. 11. The casual meet-and-greet is slated to run from 7 to 10 p.m. Last year, Reid was named Favourite New Discovery by Canada’s respected roots magazine, Penguin Eggs, and also earned a nomination for a Canadian Folk Music Award. Her bio notes that her music traces her musings about identity, love and queer life, matched with an irreverent sense of humour in such live favourites as The Only Dyke at the Open Mic, Co-op Girlz and Uncharted Territory. “For me, it’s very healing to be providing a voice for women in general and for the gay, lesbian, queer and trans-gendered communities in particular,” Reid says on her website. “What’s surprising is that people of all persuasions seem to enjoy what I am doing. It’s cool that my songs are kind of a bridge between the mainstream and the LGBT community of which I’m a part. I like shaking up opinions and perceptions, and it’s really fun seeing people howl, tap their feet

A wish for water well dug BY TOM BERRIDGE SPORTS EDITOR tberridge@royalcityrecord.com

A goalkeeper with Trinity Western University Spartans will likely never feel alone in the nets again following an unforgettable experience in Africa last month. Burnaby Central Secondary grad Andrew Fink recently returned from a two-week missions trip to the tiny West African republic of Benin in May with the varsity men’s soccer team. There, the Trinity Western players helped run soccer clinics, build a church structure in a remote village and played three matches against local clubs, but most rewardingly, they helped cap four wells that will supply clean water to the rural populace through the Global Aid Network’s water for life initiative. Clean drinking water is estimated to add 15 to 20 years to the life expectancy of villagers. At present, the life expectancy of adults living in the rural areas of Benin is below 60 years of age. Water-borne diseases from contaminated ground water are considered largely responsible as well for a high infant mortality rate in the tiny West African country. “It really was something that has altered my perception and how things go around,” said Fink, who helped Central win a B.C. high school soccer championships in 2005 and two national club championship titles with the Burnaby Selects Royals.

Africa: Emotional moments help soccer team bond ◗ continued from page 19

Fink remembers fondly one such little boy, who had a severe visual impairment. He wanted to join in with the village children in a game of soccer when the Langley university team came to town. But the other children said, “No, no, no.” Fink and fellow onetime Burnaby Royals player, Shawn Parkes, who was helping run the drill, allowed the boy to play along. They placed him with another boy and then quietly rigged the two-man drill so the disabled boy’s team won. “I was the goalie, so I took some liberties with the goalkeeping,” Fink confided. But the moment when Parkes hoisted the young disabled boy over his head in a gesture of triumph, will likely be forever indelibly etched in Fink’s memory. “You could see it in his face. Just for that moment, he was the best,” Fink said. “I’ll truly never forget the boy’s face when he won. In the moment, it was joy. I was so caught up in the

It was just such confidences that will make

a difference for the players going forward, Fink added. “We had to respond, and seeing my teammates really give over there, it really makes we want to work harder for them,” he said. “The conversations we shared over there, we

Cornwall added. Neither can New Westminster be. But with just eight games remaining in the regular season and arguably the toughest competition coming in the following week, it’s questionable whether the rest of the schedule will provide enough in the way of incentives to prepare the junior ’Bellies for the playoffs. “We have our style and we’re confident in how we play,” maintained MacGrotty. “We know what we’re doing. We’re not doubting, it’s coming.” New Westminster will host fourth-place Delta at Queen’s Park Arena on Tuesday. The juniors then face off with the Victoria Shamrocks in a back-to-back weekend series, culminating with a home contest at Queen’s Park on June 26, beginning at 5 p.m.

“Thank you for all the incredible work you did toward making our event a success!” We had a packed house - our talks were very well attended and our modality rooms were full. Our clinic saw a lot of new patients and the students had a great time. Quite a few of our guests - people in serious need of medical attention - had read about our event through the two page spread that ran in The Record. Many have since booked follow-up appointments in our clinic and are now getting the care they need. Thank you so much for everything! Sincerely, Amy

HOGNESS,

Dianne Louise (Scott)

December 6, 1935 - June 8, 2011

It is with great sadness we announce that Dianne lost her courageous battle with cancer on June 8th, 2011. Our beloved wife, mother, mother in law, grandmother, great grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, cousin and friend was taken from us far too soon. Dianne is survived by her loving husband Roy and their four children Carol (Martin), Karen (Ken), Rick (Debbie), Laurie; six grandchildren, Taryn, Tegan, Carly, Cory, Chris, Jenny; their three great grandchildren Taylor, Spencer, Stephen; her brother Robert Scott and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was predeceased by her father Desmond Scott, mother Dorothy Scott (Rae) and brother Dennis Scott. Born on December 6, 1935 in Vancouver, British Columbia, her family later moved to Crescent Beach where she spent much of her childhood, of which she had many special memories. Dianne had several careers through the years with the last being one of her greatest passions in life, hand-crafting porcelain dolls for her retail business that was in New Westminster the Twelfth Street Doll Company. Her talent for her craft won her several awards and she continued her love for making and collecting dolls even after retirement. Dianne was a passionate, kind, family-oriented person who lived life to the fullest. She will be dearly missed and forever remembered by all who knew and loved her. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Dianne’s memory to the BC Cancer Society. The family will be holding a private celebration of life. www.remembering.ca

MILLER, Todd Jeffrey Born July 12, 1969 Passed away June 8, 2011

He is survived by his loving wife Reiko and 9 year old son Tyler, parents Dianne and Lou, brother Troy, nephews Alex and Justin, uncles Dr. Milton Miller, Don and Ken Carter and many other family and cherished friends. Todd was raised and grew up in Ladner, BC, graduated from B.C.I.T. as an Aircraft Engineer. He inspired us with his nevergive-up attitude, incredible bravery and love for his family and friends. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, June 16, 2011 at 2:00 pm at Delta Funeral Home, 5329 Ladner Trunk Road, Ladner, BC.

Aries March 21 - April 19: The weeks ahead emphasize home, children, real estate, security, retirement, gardening, soul, nutrition and Mother Nature. It’s a splendid time for a camping vacation. (Better not to leave before June 28. You face many “home concerns” until then.) You will be ending some associations and projects now, perhaps to give new ones room to grow. Although this is usually a sluggish, restful period, you’re kept busy with a lot of communications, paperwork, errands – or wanderlust – now through July. Since your curiosity is up, investigate new income sources/ideas – they’re lucky! Taurus April 20-May 20: Be ambitious Sunday/ Monday – despite a subtle disagreement or heavyhanded legal or educational “pronouncement,” you’re on the path to success (for at least two years, financially, so be optimistic, make plans and go forth these months ahead!). Now to Aug. 2, you might spend too much, or be pushed to spend by government fees. Saving is your friend! Tuesday begins a month of paperwork, short trips, errands, casual acquaintances – you’ll be busy! Love is gentle, easy Monday to Wednesday, but you might doubt it: relax. Retreat, rest Thursday/Friday. Your energy surges Saturday p.m. Gemini May 21-June 20: This week isn’t easy for anyone. You could meet barriers or the need to compromise in finances or sex, especially Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday/Friday. On the plus side, your courage and determination grow now to early August, and so does your optimism. Group affairs grow; you’ll feel befriended. If someone criticized you to a group (secretly) these past few weeks, they prove ineffectual now. The month ahead emphasizes earnings, spending, possessions, sensuality and memory. Sunday’s gentle, mid-week’s ambitious (Wednesday best) and late week brings optimism and popularity!

Cancer June 21-July 22: A month of quietude and weariness ends Tuesday, as four weeks of high energy, charisma and effectiveness begin. Start important projects. Ask favours, call in markers. Until June 28 (next week) you might face opposition, or be attracted to a deeply alluring person. As usual, love is better than war. In the present week, especially Sunday to Tuesday, watch what you say to others: avoid secrets, gossip, etc. You are just beginning a splendid year-long popularity surge, especially at work. After Tuesday’s confusion/worry, grand inspiration flows Wednesday – follow hunches! Leo July 23-Aug. 22: Tuesday begins a month of retreat, quietude and rest. Your career luck will stay high, even rise. You can work in the background to advance your position: you’ll be especially good with government, institutional or head-office contacts. (Though these present some difficulties this Sunday and Tuesday.) Your hopes and optimism will rise also, and despite your need for solitude, you could receive an unusual amount of calls and invitations. So grab your rest when you can. This week isn’t easy, so remain realistic and diplomatic, particularly in legal, travel, sex and financial zones. Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: Tackle your work Sunday/ Monday. Tuesday begins a month of celebration, flirtation, entertainment, optimism and popularity! You might meet someone very compatible in a group, someone who lifts you to humorous, good-natured heights. The year going tforward favours love – and far travel, learning, culture. Various problems and barriers confront you Sunday to Tuesday – don’t invest nor make any important commitment. This advice applies Thursday also. Inspiration returns Wednesday – and relationships turn from delusion to sweet knowing. Friday’s sexy, Saturday night’s loving, wise.

June 19 - 25, 2011

Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: You feel romantic Sunday/ Monday, but events don’t help. Be cautious. Monday begins six weeks of partnership opportunities, possibly of legal hassles. Seek convergence, not dispute. If a partner begins talking about an international move, be wary. Recently, after a five-month respite, the sober side of your life returned to prominence – you can once again re-make your domestic, security, property and child-oriented situation – much more fortunately! (To next June.) Tuesday starts a month of ambition, and dealings with authorities. Reject relationships Thursday, embrace them Friday. Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: Mysteries fade; enlightenment comes Tuesday onward (for a month). Expect widened understanding, gentle love, international contacts, religious, educational and cultural involvements. Your life, for the next three years, will be filled with opportunities (especially financial ones) and, if you’re single, with cheerful, attractive love prospects. Every odd-numbered month, and the 10 days before it, will promote these (relationships and opportunities). E.g., July (seventh month) qualifies, with late June. Minor communication snafus this week. Romance calls Wednesday and Saturday. Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: The (semi?) exciting events of the past few weeks yield now to a deeper, slower thrill, as intimacy, commitment, financial investment or clearing debts, grow more important for the month ahead. (It starts Tuesday morning – but make no commitments before June 28.) Secrets, research, intuition, dreams and hunches accompany this commitment trend. You might fall for someone new, or raise an ongoing romance to a more mature level, now through early August. If you’re the feisty type this phase can bring arguments and fights. Your choice! Domestic intuition strong Wednesday.

Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: Finish a project or chore Sunday/Monday. By late Monday onward (to August) a new task enters; and by Tuesday, a month of new horizons, fresh air and relationship excitement begins. This happens every early summer, but it’s more significant this year, as your romantic luck is beginning to climb strongly! If you’re married, the month ahead brings joys through children, vacation, sports and “winning.” (Singles get this, too.) Watch what you say – and legal parameters – midweek. Rest, rejuvenate, strengthen foundations Thursday/ Friday. Romance Saturday p.m. – join a group. Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: It hasn’t been a strong summer for you, Aquarius, but the months ahead (12 of them) bring a strong, beneficial rebuilding period, which might be marked by the purchase of a new home, better rental, the entry of a new baby, lifefreeing therapy, or other good foundational moves. One of the first requirements of this new foundation will be work, which confronts you Tuesday onward for a few weeks. Dive into this eagerly (but cautiously before June 28, as the path’s a bit rocky). You could be fooled about money Tuesday, and make a bad bet. But money inspiration’s great Wednesday. Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: Rest deeply Sunday/ Monday – Monday p.m. onward, your energy and charisma rise, and Tuesday morning begins a month of romance, creativity, pleasure and adventure! But Monday also starts six weeks of friction on the home front. Be gentle with parents and kids. Romantic urges outside the home might cause dissention within it. These same six weeks, you might have an opportunity to buy or sell real estate – OK, but strictly avoid moving into a new residence before Aug. 3. (It would “set up” long-term friction.) You might change sources of income. Joy Wednesday: thank God. timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014
