RECORD

66 city workers reach $100,000 in pay

City administrator is top earner at $198,989 BY THERESA MCMANUS REPORTER tmcmanus@royalcityrecord.com

Eight employees from the City of New Westminster earned more than $150,000 in 2010, and an additional 58 topped $100,000. A recently released city report indicates that 182 employees were paid more than $75,000 in pay and expenses in 2010. In addition to those making more than $100,000, 31 employees had remunera-

tion and expenses between $90,000 and $99,999, 57 earned $80,000 to $89,999 and 28 received $75,000 to $79,999. The 182 employees earning $75,000 or more in remuneration and expenses in 2010 is a slight increase from the 178 recorded in 2009. Sixty-six employees earned more than $100,000 in 2010, a decrease from 72 in 2009, a year that saw a large number of firefighters make it on the list because of a retroactive payout when they settled their contract. City administrator Paul Daminato was once again the city’s top earner at $198,989, including $4,626 in expenses. That’s a bit less than the $202,999 he received in 2009.

Running for redemption

◗ ELIZABETH FRY PROJECT

Proposal stalls after neighbours protest

BY BRENT RICHTER REPORTER editorial@royalcityrecord.com

When drugs take over your life, there’s usually a lot of running involved – running from police, running to get drugs, but mostly running from your problems. New Westminster native Brendan McLellan has had drugs take him to the brink of death, but now he’s back and running for some new reasons: raising money for the organization that saved his life and inspiring others to get help and kick the habit. McLellan is running the Scotiabank Vancouver Half-Marathon on June 26 to raise funds for the Union Gospel Mission’s new mission for women and children in the Downtown Eastside. “I had an opportunity to see the kids come in through the place and the great work that the women do over there. And I know for a fact that there is a lack of resources and available bed spaces for women that are suffering through alcohol and drugs and mental illness down here on the Eastside. There’s not as much for women as there is for men,” he said. “I saw this and said, ‘OK, I’ve got to get some money together for this run because it really is a vital service for the Downtown Eastside as well as the whole province.’” Growing up a natural athlete in the Royal City, McLellan found alcohol came with the competitive sports territory. After graduating from Douglas College, he went to work in a liquor store, and found alcohol became a factor in every facet of his life. In his 30s, his mother was diagnosed with cancer and McLellan turned to alcohol as a crutch. Around the same time, someone introduced him to his “new best friend” – crack cocaine. The more his mom suffered, the more he abused drugs and alcohol, putting him on a trajectory with a dead end on the streets. “By the time my mom died, I was a total wreck. I didn’t want to have anything to do with anybody or anything. No longer did anything really matter. I was more than willing to run away from it all and I found refuge in alcohol and drugs,” he said. By his late 30s, McLellan was homeless, spending time in jail, desperately addicted to crack and deeply ashamed of the harm he had done to the people who loved him. Then, in 2010, during a visit with his probation officer, McLellan took stock in his life and concluded he had only two options – suicide or the faint hope of redemption. He had plans to go on one last drug binge and a jump from the Pattullo Bridge but thoughts of his brothers and young son, whom he hardly knew, inspired him to make one more attempt at cleaning up and the Union Gospel Mission happened to be just down the street. “For whatever reason, I thought of the UGM that day and it stuck with me. They had a program and I left probation and I said to myself, ‘You’re either going to kill yourself or you’re going to give recovery one last try.’ I chose to see if I could get into recovery,” he said.

Running man: Brendan McLellan hit bottom with addictions, and now he’s rebound-

ing and running in a half-marathon Sunday to help raise funds for the Union Gospel Mission’s new facility for women and children in the Downtown Eastside. In order to enter the program, he had to be at least three days clean, a hurdle he wasn’t sure he could handle. “It was a miracle. To this day, I don’t really know how I did it but I did it. It’s my belief that God played a huge role in keeping me clean for three days,” he said. “I’ve never looked back from the program and it’s literally changed my life. That’s why I have such gratitude. Right away, they gave me some dignity. They gave me my word. They told me that I just needed to listen.” Since then, McLellan has returned to his first love of sports and is now an outreach worker for the Union Gospel Mission, where he goes out to the streets in search of people he sees his old self in. “I try to find the guys that are still really steeped in addiction, the guys that are out on the street, just like me. I try to comfort them, talk to them. Just to show them that it can

be done, that there’s a way out of addiction. Life can be so much better. It doesn’t matter what you’ve done, there’s always a way to come back. Everybody loves a good comeback,” he said, drawing on a familiar sports analogy. “Today, I have my own apartment. I’m working today. I’m paying my bills. I’m cleaning up a lot of the stuff I did in the past. I am having a really, really happy and healthy relationship with my son. He’s getting to know his father and, thank God, I’m getting to know him.” McLellan started out with the admittedly modest goal of raising $1,000 but after eclipsing that in mid-June, he has since upped the goal to $2,000. To donate to McLellan’s run, visit www. canadarunningseries.com/svhm/, click “donate” and search for McLellan’s name. Donations of more than $10 will receive a tax deductible receipt.

No decision will be made about the Elizabeth Fry Society plans to expand its services in Sapperton until it has more discussions with city hall and area residents. The society had applied to city hall to redevelop 273 and 275 Sherbrooke St. for approval to construct a building that would provide space for the society’s offices, licensed child-care centre and 10 units of non-market (social) housing to provide longterm, independent housing for women. The application required an amendment to the official community plan because it introduced an institutional component into a single-family neighbourhood, as well as a rezoning. Many area residents have signed petitions, or written or appeared before city council to voice concerns about the amendment to the official community plan that would be needed for the project to proceed. The Elizabeth Fry Society recently asked city hall to table its application until more information is known about Fraser Health Authority’s plans for an expansion to Royal Columbian Hospital, which is located across the street. A staff report to city council noted that a representative from the Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation told council on May 30 that expansion of Royal Columbian Hospital had been approved and was imminent. Staff, however, followed up with Fraser Heath Authority and was told that the provincial government has not yet approved funding for the hospital’s expansion. According to city staff, the Elizabeth Fry Society has expressed a willingness to explore changes to its proposal through collaboration with its neighbours. That could include exploring opportunities at the Elizabeth Fry Society’s current building at 402 East Columbia St., ◗Fry Page 5

History retold at Plaza 88

When the Plaza 88 development is complete, visitors will be able to shop, take in a movie and learn about New Westminster’s history. City council recently received a staff report regarding modifications to the design of the retail phase of Plaza 88. The $90-million Plaza 88 development will include 50 to 60 stores and a 10-screen movie theatre when it’s complete. Since 2007, city council and its advisory committees have reviewed designs for the project that’s located on Columbia Street by the New Westminster SkyTrain station. A May 30 staff report recommends that council approve modifications to the

design of the retail phase of Plaza 88. That was in response to the architect’s determination that the “story of the city” needs to be recast and that the materials for the exterior wall need to be more permanent than those that were approved last year. “The drawings showed the intention to break the Columbia Street elevation into five sections, and through the architecture of each section to tell the history of the development of New Westminster,” said a staff report. The Columbia Street elevation will tell the story of New Westminster, which includes the land of the First Nations and the settlement of New Westminster.

Fry: Society will consult with neighbours ◗ continued from page 3

which is located at the corner of East Columbia and Sherbrooke streets. “This consultation would be designed to find common ground between the application and the neighbourhood,” said a staff report. “It is anticipated that this consultation process would take several months. Staff note the society plans to begin consultations with the neighbourhood in September, so it’s unlikely an application would come back to council until sometime early in 2012.

Coun. Bill Harper said the neighbourhood has been really concerned about the penetration of businesses into the community, particularly along Sherbrooke Street. About 60 people attended the June 20 council meeting, which included a lengthy discussion about the project and the official community plan amendment/ rezoning process. “I thought it was quite a good conversation about the role and responsibility of council, and trying to clarify some of the key issues,” Harper said. One of the issues need-

ing to be clarified is the City of New Westminster’s plan for Sherbrooke Street. Notes from a meeting of the city’s advisory planning commission indicated there is support for more non-residential development along Sherbrooke Street, even though that’s not what’s proposed in the city’s official community plan. “There has been a lot of confusion about the process, how council hadn’t debated the issue,” said Coun. Jonathan Cote. “We explained it hadn’t come to the public hearing.”

Other countries had come around. But now, to protect Canada’s right to export death, our government has stepped in to scuttle the deal. This shouldn’t be a surprise. During the recent election campaign, PM Stephen Harper publicly stood up for the carcinogenic industry when he

stumped for votes in Quebec – which is where the only current, and possible future, Canadian asbestos mines are located. Not every Conservative is so deeply out of touch. Langley MP Mark Warawa recently spoke of doing something about asbestos exports. He can expect support from retired MP and cancer survivor Chuck Strahl. The sad thing is that this is an issue at all. Preventing cancer should be an issue that all can support.

IN MY OPINION

Low taxes help everyone

Dear Editor:

Your reader Tony Eberts recently decried the HST (Let’s fix the HST mess, Letters to the Editor, The Record, June 15). As a chartered accountant, I have always believed that low taxes are the best way for an economy to prosper. When the economy does well, more jobs are created – and everyone knows that the best social program in the world is to have a good, well-paying job that provides support for a family and the dignity of work. We have made many strides at keeping all taxes low in B.C. Under the previous NDP government, a single person earning $40,000 per year paid $3,600 in provincial income taxes and medical premiums.

Today, 10 years later under the B.C. Liberals, those taxes are only $2,300 per year. That makes a huge difference to many people. Those who earn more than that – and families – save much, much more. How much more? Check out “Tax Comparison 2000 to 2011” at the website taxtips.ca/bctax.htm That’s why I am in favour of the new 10 per cent HST. It’s a tax reduction for most British Columbians – after all, why should we pay more in PST/GST, when it is proven that lower taxes stimulate the economy and provide jobs for families? I urge everyone to vote “NO” to higher taxes, and “NO” to extinguishing the HST. It will be lower than the PST/GST, and fairer for B.C.’s families and businesses. Martin Eady, New Westminster

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Corporations stand to gain

Dear Editor:

My biggest beef with the HST is that it’s a regressive tax that will hit lowerand middle-income families the hardest – despite some relief for those with the very lowest incomes. The HST’s overall impact will be to reduce demand from those families that don’t have the discretionary income to absorb the tax increases. It will tend to decrease overall economic activity. The HST’s chief beneficiaries are large, capital-intensive multinational corporations getting the reduced taxes. A lot of their products aren’t even sold in British Columbia. It’s doubtful that B.C. families are going to see much price reduction, and the Independent Panel’s estimated increase of 24,000 jobs over the next nine years is not exactly going to boom the economy. After slogging through all the statistics, graphs, and pie-charts concerning the HST, one thing struck me: The province raises 14 per cent of its money from the HST, 14 per cent from personal income taxes, and only four per cent from corporate income taxes. The province spends 42 per cent of its revenues on health and 27 per cent on education. Corporations benefit greatly from an educated and healthy workforce. It reduces their training costs, and unlike companies in the U.S. they don’t have to shell out huge amounts for health insurance. That in itself provides a big cost advantage for all B.C. companies. So why aren’t these companies paying their fair share? Over the years our government has increasingly catered to the values of Wall Street and Madison Avenue. Now, if only it could rediscover Main Street. Mike Divine, New Westminster

HST benefits all of B.C.

Dear Editor:

Firstly, I find it interesting that every week you print Mr. Tony Eberts’ anti-HST misinformation. I am sure that there are

other people commenting on this topic, both pro- and anti-HST. Whether you agree with the way the HST was rolled out or not is irrelevant to this referendum. The question at hand is: do you want to extinguish the HST and go back to the old PST/GST system? Yes, the HST is a broader based tax. More goods and services are taxed than under the old PST/GST. If something was GST exempt, it is HST exempt now. What the anti-HST people fail to disclose is that, under the PST/GST, we are currently being taxed on a tax. Businesses pass on the extra cost of taxation to the end consumer. When they have to pay PST and/or GST on inputs, they will pass that cost on. The consumer then pays tax (PST and/or GST) on the cost of the taxes. The HST will result in lower prices for the consumer. Another mantra of the anti-HSTers is that we cannot trust the government to keep their promise of reducing the HST to 10 per cent. This problem was handled by the federal government. The reduction is guaranteed under law. Then we are told by the anti-HSTers that the federal government can choose to up the rate whenever they want. This is partially true. After the rate change to 10 per cent in 2014, they can up the tax. However, they were free to do this with the GST prior to harmonization. If people recall, the GST was reduced by the Conservative government. There is nothing to stop the government, either federal or provincial from raising the PST or GST now or after the referendum. They can raise your income tax too if they want. I will be voting No. I believe the HST is better for the province as a whole. Lower income families benefit from the HST. The economy of B.C. benefits from the HST. It is also the best tax for the environment. Consumption taxes are the fairest form of taxation. Make an informed decision and not a knee-jerk reaction to your hatred of the government. Taxes are never popular, but they are necessary. Bryan Bourne, by e-mail

needed to fund the U.S. Army for the same time – $15 billion. While not a perfect comparison, that would make Diocles the best-paid athlete in history, period. Partisans of the Blues and Greens became split between different social classes, and Byzantine emperors publicly supported one team or the other. The Emperor Justinian supported the

Blues; his wife Theodora was a commoner whose father had been an animal trainer for the faction. They almost fell victim to the partisanship of the hippodrome. In 532 AD, unhappy with high taxes, the Blues and Greens both started a week-long riot (called the Nika Riot; Nika means “victory” or “conquer”) and a siege of the palace in Constantinople, after a chariot race. The riot ended when a popular

general bribed the Blue leaders with a literal big bag of money. The Greens were slaughtered. We complain about modern day soccer hooligans and hockey riots, but the Nika Riots burned half a city to the ground and almost toppled an empire. Kind of puts the Stanley Cup in perspective. Building with purpose Non-profit group works to open a unique school for children with cerebral palsy BY STEFANIA SECCIA REPORTER editorial@royalcityrecord.com

It could be Canada’s first school for cerebral palsy students that integrates the B.C. curriculum and the 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. school day, but it’s taken more than 10 years to finally launch it this fall. The Purpose Society has acted as the shelter organization for the parents trying to start the independent, private school in New Westminster with a class of about one dozen children from ages five to 12. “Basically when your kid gets diagnosed with cerebral palsy, right away everyone is coming at you with what they can’t do and what you can expect, and all kinds of equipment,” said James Forliti, who’s been a teacher at Purpose Independent Secondary School for 12 years. “Nobody teaches you how to help the child, … anything about their personality or how to do stuff.” One out of every 500 babies, and one in three premature babies, are diagnosed with some form of a motor impairment, according to the Ontario Federation of Cerebral Palsy. Forliti’s son, Blue, is a 13-year-old boy with cerebral palsy. He has blond hair and bright blue eyes, but he’s motor impaired, which is leaving him behind in the regular education system. “So basically if your child is really well suited for conductive education, they can start doing things well within an hour that the parents have been told they’ll never do,” Forliti explained. “And I’m not talking about playing hockey or anything really big, just little

things they start doing and right away you get excited.” Conductive education is a cornerstone to what the Purpose School of Conductive Learning will have to offer, and it’s a highly specialized method for handling those with motor impairment. The school was born out of parents’ frustration with the regular education system, which has no real capacity to deal with motorimpaired students, who are often marginalized due to larger classrooms sizes and the specialized attention they require. Phill Esau is one of the co-founders of the Purpose Society and has worked on this project with fellow director Lynda Fletcher-Gordon since it was just an idea. “They won’t be sitting in their wheelchairs for hours on end, they’re going to be challenged to be physical and be learning both physical capacity as well as mental capacity,” said Esau, future principal of the school, who also co-founded and is currently principal of the Purpose Independent Secondary School. All that’s required is the right location. Funding has also been lined up through the Ministry of Education, but it’s just a matter of crossing the Ts and dotting the Is, according to Esau. “There’s a lot to do in a short time. Even if it’s a school of 100 or a school of 12,” Esau said. “If we’re going to do these renovations, we need to find a property that’s big enough to grow in.” What will also be different about this school is its specialized equipment that will allow students to get out of their wheelchairs and improve their movement. The head conductor for the school was educated in Europe but was inspired to join the field because of her brother who also had cerebral palsy. She was able to witness the various ◗Education Page 10

Education: School offers new options for kids ◗ continued from page 9

approaches to education for her sibling, and conductive education was the best. “At the end of the day, it’s really about developing their personality,” said Anne Wittig, who has qualified conductor status and a bachelor’s degree in conductive education from the University of Wolverhampton in the U.K. “If you strap them in equipment and just push them around, then they’re not active, they’re not engaged. They have no motivation to try anything.” She explained that conductive education not only looks at the physical side during the lesson, but incorporates movement throughout the whole day. “We’re not only looking at the academic stuff,” Wittig explained. “We’re looking at the personality involved, social and emotional development.” The progression of a student will be judged by their own personal skills, just like a regular school, while juggling the challenge of keeping the child motivated. “To be able to do stuff for yourself and you’re motivated to try again even

if it doesn’t work, your body lets you down.” Wittig has been Blue’s conductor for the past year, and Forliti said the change in his son’s responses has exponentially transformed. “Anne and I have been joking ever since she got here that it didn’t take long for her to realize who the client was in my household, and it’s me,” Forliti said. “As Anne says, the biggest thing they learn is to try.” Forliti added that the school will not focus on buying the most expensive equipment, but on communicating with its students and parents. “Instead of just adapting their environment by buying all this really expensive equipment, that usually doesn’t work, that’s too heavy or too big, but by the way people interact with the child, which is a lot more liquid.” For a person with motor impairment, it’s best to teach them from an earlier age, according to Wittig. “You have to start early to teach them to stand on their legs,” Wittig said. “Conductive education is always about giving them options.” The school will be parent-driven,

and there will be a fee for services as well. Esau will be joined by Forliti, who will be the teacher, and Wittig, who will be the main conductor. The three will be joined by assistants as it’s required. “It’s really creative, it’s not just textbook learning,” Wittig said. It’s about engaging all of the senses, she added. “It’s not just in there sitting six hours a day. It’s being there, grabbing stuff and pushing it to the side, kicking it, moving towards it, going under the table to find it,” Wittig said. “Just movement, and that doesn’t really happen for those kids.” For more about the new school visit www.purposesociety.org, call 604-5262522 or email info@purposesociety.org. The society is more than 25 years old and was started by four friends, but now has more than 50 employees and provides a variety of services to youth and families in the Lower Mainland. “He’s too old for the school,” said Forliti of Blue, adding that what he learns during the day as a teacher, he’ll bring home. “It’s just enriching for everybody in the family to keep learning.”

ore than a few tears are being shed at Fraserside Community Services Society as news spreads that it’s losing its longest-serving executive director. Caroline Bonesky, who has been the society’s executive director for the past 11 years, has announced she’s leaving and taking a position with Family Services of Greater Vancouver. Her last day is Friday, but she’ll be attending the society’s annual picnic on Tuesday at Queen’s Park. Diane Cairns, the society’s director of Living Well programs, said it was under Bonesky’s leadership that the society bought its new offices on Seventh Street, bought a building at Sixth Avenue and 12th Street to provide social housing, changed its logo, began offering a coaching culture within the organization and much more. “Nothing was sacred. She would look at everything with fresh eyes. If it wasn’t working, she would change it,” Cairns said. “She has taken this agency leaps and bounds.” Anyone wanting to say farewell to Bonesky is welcome to drop by the picnic, which takes place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, June 23 at the main picnic shelter in Queen’s Park. The official goodbye speeches will take place at 12:30 p.m. “Fraserside always has it for our staff and families and clients,” Cairns said about the annual picnic. “About 200 people show up.”

She previously won the cast award for Best Actress. “When Father Jonathan’s church burns to the ground, his once peaceful life takes a turn for the worst,” said a movie synopsis. “The situation is critical. Sinning has become rampant all over the city. … Father Jonathan ends up on a deep, dark rollercoaster ride to hell and back.” The movie premiere is being held at the Rio Theatre on Sunday, July 10 at 6 p.m. The Rio is located at 1660 East Broadway in Vancouver. Dianne Dennis is the producer, writer and actor of Forgive Me Father. The eclectic cast of more than 40 actors also includes Tyrone Martin Polanski (who is also an Elvis Presley and Neil Diamond tribute artist), Daved Benefield (former B.C. Affordable fun

The New Westminster Early and Middle Childhood Development Committees have joined forces on a publication aimed at helping families find free and low-cost activities in the city this summer. The Summer Activity Guide is designed for families of children up to the age of 12. The guides have been distributed through schools to families with kids in kindergarten to Grade 6, and will also be available at recreation centres in the city, the library and at local community service providers. The United Way of the Lower Mainland provided funding for the publication, which has also been supported by New Westminster parks, culture and recreation and New Westminster School District. “This is the first publication that these two committees have worked on together and we are really excited about it,” said an email from Karen Corcione, a member of the committee. “As this will be an annual publication, we also really want to hear from the community what they think about it.” Comments can be forwarded to info@ newwest.ca. f you act fast, you can catch a great evening of mystery/comedy by taking in Shadow of Murder. Shadow of Murder is the newest play by prolific local author-playwrightsinger-puppeteer Elizabeth Elwood. It’s on at the Bernie Legge Theatre in Queen’s Park until Saturday (June 25). What is supposed to be a relaxing week at a hunting lodge deep in the woods turns out to be a shooting gallery for a vengeful killer – and who is going to be the victim? An attractive set, complete with a real bear rug in front of a fireplace, assorted deer and moose heads and other trophies, hosts a dysfunctional family with a mysterious history, and provides a suitable backdrop for the

question: Why is their coming a source of fear to their hosts? Trading barbs and great one-liners are Mary Adams as an opera diva and Dwayne Campbell as a sardonic gardener. Donna Thompson is suitably cast as the new trophy wife, with Nancy Von Euw as the harried help, and Chris O’Connor does a good comedic turn as the self-engrossed Italian tenor. The ensemble includes Cheryl Stephenson as a tell-all teenager, who, like most of the rest of the cast of 14, does double duty with backstage tasks. Elwood’s skillful direction manages all these characters without any traffic jams on the Bernie Legge Theatre’s far-fromlarge stage. Be prepared for some unexpected murders, amid entertaining cross-talk among the cast, and a surprise ending you are challenged to guess. Tickets are $15/$13. Studio, circus team up for summer camps

Art and creativity are blooming at the River Market. This summer, Bloom Art Studio and the Vancouver Circus School will be running summer camp programs for kids aged six to 15. At the art studio, camp participants can learn an array of art techniques in drawing, painting, book arts, collage, mask making and more. They’ll also have a chance to take part in a summerlong community art project. Camps will be held on weekly themes: West Coast Forests from July 4 to 8; Space: The Final Frontier from July 11 to 15; Woodland Creatures from July 18 to 22; Kings and Queens from July 25 to 29; The Rockies from Aug. 2 to 5; In the Sky from Aug. 8 to 12; Summer Solstice from Aug. 15 to 19; and West Coast

Ocean from Aug. 22 to 26. At the circus school, kids learn skills and routines on circus apparatus such as trapeze, trampoline, aerial silks and hoops, and more. One week full-day circus plus art camps will be available for $335. One-week half day camps for either one – circus or art – will be available for $185. The art studio will also offer half- and full-day one-day camps for $40 and $80, respectively. It’s the latest in a series of offerings from Bloom Art Studio, which opened its doors in February this year. “It has been great having the studio at the River Market,” said studio owner Kimberly Chiem in an e-mail to The Record. “There is a wonderful sense of camaraderie with everyone that is there.”

The studio hosted a successful Easter celebration as part of the River Market’s festivities, with Chiem leading an egg dyeing activity at the studio using natural dyes like onion peels, cookeddown purple cabbage, beets and more. Chiem noted that other businesses have been highly supportive of the studio – Donald’s Market donated the eggs and produce for the dyes, and the Paddlewheeler Pub cooked the eggs. Great Wall Tea has also reached out to the studio, sponsoring one of its Occasional Knitters Group evenings with its tea. “It feels great to be part of building something special in the community,” Chiem said. For more details, call 604-5445024 for the circus school, and

Grads appreciate helping hands BY THERESA MCMANUS REPORTER tmcmanus@royalcityrecord.com

When some New Westminster Secondary School grads attend their formal dinner and dance on June 30, they’ll be dressed to the nines. A group of local women – Kathy Wilson, Cindy Carlson, Darcey Sudeyko, Lissa Mott and Barb Henderson – started You Wear It Well (Just for Grads) as a way to ensure no student had to miss out on their grad dinner and dance because they couldn’t afford to buy an outfit. At the Boutique Day that was held in April, female grads picked out dresses, shoes and accessories, and got their hair and makeup done. “It went fabulously,” Wilson said. “The transformation was wonderful. It was so much fun. All the girls had a great time.” One young woman had tried on several pairs of shoes before finding a pair in her size that coordinated with her dress. “Her mom said, ‘This is a Cinderella moment,’” Wilson said. “You could hear the tears.” You Wear it Well is the local chapter of the Cinderella Project, which seeks to help students look their best on grad day after working hard to finish high school. All of the dresses, shoes, shawls, jewelry and other accessories have been donated from community members. A couple of months before the grad diner and dance, the girls attend Boutique Day. “Everyone was able to find things they were happy with,” Wilson said.

“As we are growing, I find the need for more selection.” You Wear it Well (Just for Grads) always welcomes donations of gentlyused formal or semi-formal dresses (long or short) and accessories because the grads would have a variety of colours, styles and sizes to choose from. “Everyone was so appreciative,” Wilson said. “The transformation was wonderful.” Sarah Thomas of InStyle Hair Studio styled the girls’ hair and Nicole Pasacreta of Mary Kay did their makeup. A professional photographer took photos at Boutique Day, which was held at Urban Academy. “He took pictures from when they walked in until the finished production,” Wilson said “He gave them two photos and a disk of all their pictures.” Boys aren’t left out of the grad preparations, as the Tux Store in Vancouver donates rentals of brand new tuxedos for the grad dinner and dance. Donations of suits, shirts and ties are appreciated, as they’re given to the graduates to wear to their grad ceremony or for future jobs. You Wear it Well welcomes donations for its annual Boutique Day. It’s also looking for a place to store items that are distributed on Boutique Day each April. Cash donations can be sent to the Royal City Education Foundation, c/o School District 40, 1001 Columbia St., V3M 1C4. Put ‘You Wear It Well’ in the memo box. Dance in the square The City of New Westminster wants to help Royal City residents dance the summer away. The city has partnered with the Dance With Me Studio to teach some dance moves to local residents. Free dance sessions will be happening every Friday night in Hyack Square, from July 8 to Aug. 26. The TGIF Dancing in the Square features salsa (July 8), Broadway/Big Band Sound (July 15), Egyptian belly dancing (July 22), salsa (July 29), zumba (Aug. 5), Latin (Aug. 12), Egyptian belly dancing (Aug. 19) and a dance party featuring a variety of different dance music and dances including the foxtrot, waltz, cha cha, rumba etc. (Aug. 26). Each Friday night, professional instructors will provide instruction from 7 to 7:30 p.m. After that people will have a chance to test out their new moves until 9 p.m. Sessions will be held outdoors in Hyack Square, on Columbia at the foot of Eighth Street, weather permitting. See www.dancewithmenewwest.com on Fridays to confirm that an evening’s outdoor event is happening.

CANADA DAY 2011 More fabulous talent to entertain you on Canada Day. . . A Cappella Fellas Recently rejuvenated by new member Jesse DeCoste, recently seen in ‘Wil Rogers Follies’, at the Massey Theater, the group is back in business and ready as ever to serenade, warble, harmonize, cantillate and croon their way into the hearts of the public. Founded in 2008 as a joke, the Fellas have made a name for themselves at a multitude of New Westminster events, from May

Day to ambushing the unsuspecting public on Sixth Street during the 150 celebrations. Overqualified as ever, between them they hold the experience of countless hours of Musical Theatre, Choir, Improv, Symphonic Winds and a quarter of an Engineering degree. We hope you enjoy our discharge of classic Harmonies, fresh beats and quirky humour as much as we do.

And this year, they are delighted to be sponsored by RBC — your 6th Ave. Branch, uptown New Westminster. L/R Gower Roberts, Scott Grimsey, Jesse DeCoste and Thomas Lamont.

Tate Zawadiuk The Canada Day Committee is pleased and very proud to introduce 13-year-old cello soloist, Tate Zawadiuk to Canada Day audiences. Tate is well on his way to becoming a superstar as you’ll agree when you hear him perform at 12:30 pm on Canada Day, in Queen’s Park. In case you miss him there, catch him at the VSO’s traditional free concert at Deer Lake Park in July. Candice James, New Westminster’s Poet Laureate, is the author of 7 poetry books. The first published in 1979 “A SPLIT IN THE WATER” and the most recent “INNER HEART— A JOURNEY” published in 2010. Candice is the founder of the New Westminster events “Poetic Justice”, “Poetry in The Park” and “Slam Central Spoken Word Poetry”. Candice took our Canada Day theme and produced the following poem overnight.

CANADIAN KALEIDOSCOPE Canada, the land of the strong and the free, Is filled with lush beauty and bold pageantry. The tree lined shores of the five Great Lakes; The Yukon gold rush, the miner’s stakes; The jagged rocks and harsh craggy shore Of Newfoundland and Labrador; New Brunswick’s famous magnetic hill; Nova Scotia’s storms and Atlantic swill; Prince Edward Island’s red soiled ground; Quebec, where French accents still resound; Ontario, the Canadian Parliament’s base; Manitoba, the proud Cree and Metis race; Saskatchewan nights painted with a soft kiss And the true north’s Aurora Borealis; Alberta, Lake Louise, Banff National Park, Sparkling jewels, each a shining landmark; British Columbia, Rocky Mountains high; Waterfalls whisper as Eagles fly by. Chilly nights in the Northwest Territories; Wolves howl at the moon and whisper ghost stories.

ction page. . .

The traditional Lunch Box Auction will again be held as part of the Canada Day 2011 Festivities in Queen’s Park on July 1st. Local restaurants and businesses have participated in the Lunch Box Auction by donating picnic lunchboxes containing a lunch, with food and beverages for a family of four.

This year we thank the following. . .

and

of New Westminster

Special thanks to Judy Brennan (formerly Judy’s Restaurant) and Louisa Lundy for the Lion’s Lunch Box and Mr. George Sciberras of SAVE-ON-FOODS Westminster Mall for his food basket, our Canada Day cake, coffee and cups.

ALL SIX LUNCH BOXES WILL BE AUCTIONED OFF TO THE HIGHEST BIDDER DURING CANADA DAY CELEBRATIONS ON JULY 1ST. PROCEEDS RAISED FROM THE AUCTION WILL BE CONTRIBUTED TOWARDS PUBLIC ART IN QUEEN’S PARK. Since 2001, the ever-popular Lunch Box Auction has brought in almost $7,000! This money has been dedicated to creating a lasting public art legacy in Queen’s Park as part of the City’s commitment to the development of Arts and Culture. In addition to the funds generated from the Lunch Box Auction, the Province of British Columbia, through the 2010 Winter Games Torch Relay, has approved $4,800 for a Public Art Legacy Project. The Public Art Project will be launched in the very near future which

will focus on the theme of community pride and celebration! Queen’s Park is the perfect blank canvass for displays of public art. As such, it is the City of New Westminster’s aim to use art in order to enhance public space in a way that helps enrich the lives of its citizens and capture the hearts of those who come to visit here. The funding from the Lunch Box Auctions, along with the 2010 Winter Games Torch Relay, totalling $11,800 have been combined to fund this exciting project.

Details will be announced soon. . .

◗ IN THE LIBRARY

The joy of eating locally BY JOANNE ROBERTSON CONTRIBUTOR editorial@royalcityrecord.com

T

he Royal City Farmers Market has started and will run every Thursday from 3 to 7 p.m. until Oct. 6 at the Tipperary Park at Fourth Street and Royal Avenue. There’ll be food and snacks, produce and plants, crafts from local artists and artisans, as well as live entertainment, kids’ activities and community information. The New Westminster Public Library will have a table at the market, so pay us a visit, too. The Royal City has been home to a vibrant city market since Nov. 4, 1892. Locations have changed, but the mission is much the same as it was in the early days. By providing access to locally grown food, the Royal City Farmers Market contributes to healthy eating, the environment, and the economy of the community. And it’s fun. Each time you visit, you’ll come home with fresh, healthy, and tasty food. You might want to take a look at Fresh from the Farmers’ Market, by Janet Fletcher, and Cooking from the Farmers’ Market, by Tasha De Serio, for ideas on how to prepare all that beautiful food. The local food movement has become so popular that the word “locavore” was coined in 2005 to describe people committed to eating locally follow us on

grown food. The New Oxford English Dictionary chose “locavore” as the 2007 Word of the Year. And now Sarah Elton’s book Locavore looks at the rise of the local food movement and the state of food in Canada. If you’re in the mood for an eye-opening account of the fun and frustrations of eating locally, read The 100-Mile Diet, by Vancouver authors Alisa Smith and J.B. MacKinnon. Visit the reference department at the Library to find out about the history of the farmers’ market in New Westminster. The program of the official opening of the New City Farmers’ Market at New Westminster, which took place on Aug. 22, 1947, is full of advertisements and trivia. Check out the Royal City Farmers Market website at www.rcfm.ca for more information about the market today. The New Westminster Public Library is at 716 Sixth Ave.

Fire department marks 150 years of service ment, now known as New Westminster Fire and Rescue Services. The department, then a volunteer brigade, was formed in the summer of 1861. John Horatio Watson is prominent in the long list of city fire chiefs. Those familiar with the old Mack fire truck, now restored and presented in special events, will have noted

his year is the 150th year of the local fire depart-

the plaques on the truck dedicating it as the “J.H. Watson.” In 1910, Watson celebrated 21 years as a member of the department, having joined the Hyack Volunteer Fire Company in 1889 as a driver of the horse teams that pulled the fire wagons. A local reporter in an interview with the chief about his personal anni-

versary managed to get the gentleman to admit that he was only 21 years of age at the time he joined. Chief Watson, in commenting on the firefighting equipment of his early days with the department, stated: “The fire fighting apparatus at that time consisted of old hand pumps and other simple devices long ago relegated to the

shades of obscurity.” There is also a reference to Fire Chief Watson in another newspaper article, this time from 1925. The article notes that Watson had a couple of “relics” from the fire department’s history. One of those items was a photograph of F.J. Richards, who organized the volunteer fire company and who was also at one

time a fire chief. The second item that the chief had in 1925 was a weathercock given to the fire department by a former member. This weathercock, formerly situated on the Hyack Hall, was situated on the roof of the 1862 hall. The piece was “of sheet metal and depicts a fireman of the old days, with helmet and megaphone.”

Second-year Burnaby Laker forward Trevor Moore was recently named an All-American honourable mention for a second consecutive season in NCAA Division I field lacrosse. Moore, a senior captain at Robert Morris University, became the school’s first All-American in program history last year. He was also named the Northeast conference player of the year for a second straight time. “I just took advantage of all the opportunities I got,” said Moore. “I took a shot when I had to and, luckily, they went in when they did.” The Port Coquitlam native led the nation with 3.33 goals per game, while scoring a single-season school record 50 tallies. He also bettered his own school record for total points with 61 this season. The 5-10 RMU attackman placed fifth in the NCAA and first in the NEC with 4.07 points per game. Last season, Moore also led the NEC in points per game and was the only player in the conference to average more than 3.50 points per game. Earlier in this season, Moore set a single-game school record with seven goals against Canisius. During the regular season, Moore recorded 10 hat tricks and tallied at least five goals on three separate occasions. He was twice named the confer-

Aseven-goal final period helped New Westminster stay ahead of Delta in B.C. Junior Lacrosse League play Tuesday. The junior A Salmonbellies broke open a closescoring game at Queen’s Park Arena in the third period to take a 16-7 victory over the visiting Islanders. Three of New West’s top scoring forwards – Tyler Digby, Brandon Goodwin and Mark Negrin – all tallied their fourth goals of the match in the final stanza. The win improved the ’Bellies’ record to 9-5-0. Justin Salt, who had five of his six points in the first two periods, was The Record’s player of the game. “It was tight at the end of the second period, but it felt good for us when they came back and we shut them down,” said Salt, who is a cousin to Hall of Famer Bob Salt. For arguably the first 40 minutes, the momentum swung like a pendulum.

Nationally, Moore finished among the top 10 with a 43.9 shooting percentage. He was also ranked second in the conference with five gamewinning goals. Moore leaves Robert Morris as the most prolific scorer in program history. He holds career school records of 134 goals, 61 assists and 195 points. Moore’s 130-plus mark-

ers ranked him second nationally among active Div. I college players in career goals. He ended his four-year university career on a 45-game point streak. “I didn’t really realize what the numbers were until the end of the season,” Moore said. “I didn’t want it to get to my head. I just told myself it didn’t matter and focused more on the team’s success.” Nevertheless, Moore

also tied the program record with 21 hat tricks, while also being ranked first overall with seven game-winning goals. “It wasn’t just me,” Moore added. “It was the way our coaches put us in the right positions and worked on our skill set.” Moore is also thankful that the coaches at Robert Morris chose to build the field program’s offence around the Canadian

Canadians women join forces with Columbus BY TOM BERRIDGE SPORTS EDITOR tberridge@royalcityrecord.com

After two seasons under the BGSC Canadians banner, the premier women’s soccer program has reaffiliated with Columbus FC. Calling the move a “bit of a change in direction,” women’s team head coach Matt Holbrook said the formation of the women’s premier team in the storied Azzuri blue colours of Columbus is a perfect fit for both clubs. “(Columbus) was ecstatic. They want to have the top men’s, top women’s and top masters’ programs in the province,” Holbrook said. “It’s a real good fit for us.” Since Burnaby Canadians director Dick Fryatt helped cre-

ate the women’s merger with the Burnaby Girls Soccer Club in 2009, club executives have turned over and support for the senior program has lessened, Holbrook said, adding Fryatt is “fully supportive of the club’s move to Columbus.” “In two seasons, we’ve established ourselves as a very competitive team in the (Metro Women’s) premier division, and this exciting partnership with Columbus will help us take another step in our team’s development,” Holbrook said in a Columbus press release. “Our players are excited to enter our third season in existence, and moving under the Columbus club umbrella will give us the support and structure we were looking for to grow our

Another member of last season’s team, Kylla Sjoman, is currently playing in the FA women’s professional league in England with the Doncaster Rovers. The Columbus women will kick off the upcoming season on Aug. 25 against Capilano University. The team also has dates set for friendly matches against Trinity Western and Simon Fraser universities.

Field:

Four New Westminster field lacrosse players will be playing this summer on Burnaby Mountain Selects touring teams. Junior defender Will Bascombe was named along with under-15 goalie Dylan Sharpe and u-13’s Matthew Buchanan and Fynn Miller.

Juniors: Victoria comes to town Sunday ◗ continued from page 31

Delta outshot the home ’Bellies 5-0 in the opening minutes of the game, but New Westminster took a 3-1 lead on three quick goals, including Leif Mydske’s first of two markers. The period ended 5-4 in New West’s favour. In the middle frame, Delta made the Salmonbellies pay for three of four penalties whistled against them, but still trailed at the end of the period, 9-7. New West keeper Frankie Scigliano stopped 39 shots in goal. The Salmonbellies outshot Delta 61-46 in the otherwise wide-open affair, including 23 in the final frame. But it is the up-and-down nature of the current Salmonbellies’ game and the 459 minutes in penalties accumulated to

date that has some onlookers questioning the team’s playoff readiness. But Salt said all that is being addressed. “We want to play a 60-minute game. We’re getting to the 50 mark, but mostly we’re playing 40,” Salt said. “We’re just working hard in practice, then we’ll play like that. I think it will really show soon.” As for garnering a second-worst 135 team penalties to date, Salt maintained the club “is trying to get past that.” “It was good to come out hard in the third period,” he added. The junior ’Bellies face the secondplace Victoria Shamrocks this Sunday at Queen’s Park Arena. Game time is 5 p.m. New West will also host the Burnaby Lakers at home on Tuesday at 8 p.m.

In his second year, Moore finished first on the team with 31 goals, 16 assists and 47 total points. With the help of Moore, RMU posted its third consecutive winning season in just the seventh year of the school’s field lacrosse program. The Patriots led the nation in scoring offence for a second straight year. This season, Robert Morris made its first-ever post-season appearance before eventually falling 12-11 in double overtime to second-seeded Quinnipiac in the conference semifinal. The Patriots claimed another first this season, beating its first nationally ranked opponent, Bucknell, earlier in the year.

The New Westminster Hyacks improved with the weather at last weekend’s Big Kahuna 7-on-7 Passing Challenge tournament at Mercer Stadium. After a wet and dismal showing on the opening Saturday, the Hyacks climbed into sixth place in the final placements on the final day of the weekend event. “Today we were better. But this really is prep,” said Hyacks head coach Farhan Lalji. New Westminster’s B team upset Seaquam, and the Hyacks knocked off Timberline and Kelowna on a late scoring drive to nail down sixth place. The Hyacks also put together a good first-half showing against eventual fourth-place W.J. Mouat. Lalji praised the play of Jonathan Lopez and Connor Brady on the final day. “Our young kids got invaluable experience and they played their tails off. I was happy for them,” Lalji said. Tweedsmuir won the Big Kahuna tourney 39-23 over Nooksack Valley.

Cancer June 21-July 22: Your energy, effectiveness, magnetism, and optimism rise for the weeks ahead. You’re on a winning track! That is, if you don’t get knocked off it Sunday/Monday by insisting too strongly on your own way. Be flexible, discern others’ desires. Your popularity rises the rest of this year, and this Monday it could bring you love! Wish, hope, see opportunities, not oppositions. Retreat for a rest and some deep thinking Tuesday/Wednesday – good plans can hatch, and civil servants favour you. Your energy, clout rise Thursday-Saturday: but a domestic or realty problem needs solving. Leo July 23-Aug. 22: Take life easy, roll with the punches this week and the next few.Lie low, rest, plan, meditate, deal with shut-ins, fulfill old obligations, be charitable and spiritual, especially Thursday to Saturday. Study career, employment, government and head-office situations Sunday/Monday – think about the changes these areas face now to 2023. Your health faces changes too: a chronic condition disappears. The decade ahead brings digestive concerns, so eat sensibly. Vegetables cure ills. Your hopes rise Tuesday/Wednesday: enjoy a pleasant interval. Saturday night brings “potent glances.” Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: Hopes and wishes come true over the weeks ahead. Your optimism grows, your popularity rises. Expect flirtation, light romance, entertainment, social delights! Issue and accept invitations. Wisdom, understanding visit Sunday/Monday. You could see friends struggle, or gravitate toward one another. Be ambitious Tuesday/ Wednesday – you can make headway, all is smooth, especially in money areas related to career. Your hopes and happiness rise Thursday to Saturday, but impediments arise to money, earnings, sensuality and romance – practical impediments. Smile, bide your time.

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Aries March 21 - April 19: The weeks ahead feature property, family, security, gardening, retirement, and the establishment or strengthening of foundations (concrete and emotional/spiritual). You’ll say goodbye to some people or situations, and greet new ones. Snip off wilted vines. Chase money Monday/ Tuesday, but pay attention to major developments: 1) the change in your life and goals causes a change in your home and foundations; 2) this “home change” must face and deal with a change in status or career. Both are long-term, fill the decade ahead – many heartfelt wishes will come true before 2018! Taurus April 20-May 20: Short trips, paperwork, errands, calls, news and casual acquaintances fill the weeks ahead. It’s a busy but not important time. A new project could arise in these areas Thursday onward. Your energy and charisma hit a beautiful peak Sunday/Monday – both days feature a critical development, one which will mold your character going forward. Not in a “war” or conflict way, but in a wisdom way. Chase money Tuesday/Wednesday – but reasonably. Information comes Thursday to Saturday – avoid taking risks in property, legal, and employment zones. Avoid gossip all week; think first. Gemini May 21-June 20: Chase money, seek new clients, buy/sell, and deal with all money matters for the few weeks ahead. Your overall financial, investment, net worth situation is changing – has been changing since 2008, and will continue to do so until 2023. This can be a good thing or a bad thing. Hints of this (and perhaps of tension between your social needs and your money desires) appear Sunday/Monday. Now through August 2012, don’t make the wrong financial decision based on anger, selfishness, over-independence, or a “fed up” feeling. Your energy, charisma surge mid-week – start good things!

June 26 - July 2, 2011

Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: The cosmos nudges you toward career, business, ambition and prestige situations for the next few weeks (especially late this week). Simultaneously, a deeper, perhaps unconscious force pulls you toward domesticity, security, foundations. You could experience this as a try-versus-quit tug-o-war. It’s there strongly Sunday/ Monday. Best approach: make changes to your career (etc.) goals in order to conform to new realities. The year ahead favours major life changes, and these could also touch a lucky wand to your investments and/or intimate life. For success: talk, be curious! Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: This is a gentle, sweet time of understanding and wisdom. You might meet a love who could become a life mate – though this is more favoured after July 2, as practical impediments lurk all this week (e.g., that handsome guy is a single father with 10 loud kids.) But in the big picture, you’re finally on true love’s road – though your destination could appear in any one of the fifteen years ahead. The 12 months ahead bring lucky relationships and splendid money opportunities. Love’s choice arises Tuesday. Finances, sexual urges are easy midweek, but might be subtle traps. Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: Mysteries, secrets, changes and commitments fill the weeks ahead, especially this Thursday-Saturday – though so many practical barriers and traps arise this week that you should wait until next week to act. (Especially to invest, change lifestyle, seek a health diagnosis, undergo surgery, seek sexual intimacy, or make any kind of important commitment or new start.) Sunday/Monday are for chores – practice safety, and eat/dress sensibly. Relationships are smooth and benign Tuesday/Wednesday – still, be wary of committing yourself (and of offered advice). Joy, Saturday late!

Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: Relationships are paramount during this irritating week. Be diplomatic. Bosses and VIPs seem un-amused, and practical matters run into soft, subtle but strong impediments. Opportunities will come, but the good ones arrive after July 2, not before. Sunday/Monday are romantic – you could meet someone who finds you mysteriously attractive. This could grow to “deep heights.” Tackle chores Tuesday/Wednesday, but don’t take on so much it will interfere with other activities. You’re meant to find love and pleasure this year: to deny it would be a loss. Go slow Thursday to Saturday. Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: The month ahead holds chores, health and nutrition concerns, and nudges you to attend to kids and pets. It’s a good time to seek employment – after this week. Though Sunday/ Monday might contain stress (Sunday) and a feeling of alienation (Monday) these days also highlight home, recuperation, Gaia, property – all imbued with good/ great fortune over the months ahead. A nice romantic breeze is wafting its way through your life June/July, and you should feel its light touch Tuesday/Wednesday. Handle chores, but avoid romance, machinery purchases, dull people, Thursday-Saturday. Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: The accent lies on romance, pleasure, beauty, creative surges, speculation, risks and self-expression, now through late July (and especially this Thursday-Saturday). This week’s a little dicey, though, filled with practical barriers, so a bit of waiting or hesitation isn’t unwise. Sunday/Monday indelibly link your romantic and social sides, or cause a tug-o-war between the two. A friend might become a lover (or hints thereof) – or you might have to choose between the two. Domestic matters flow smoothly Tuesday/Wednesday, but might not be beneficial long-term. Talk aids career. timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014
