Resident wants New Westminster’s ‘vicious’ dog bylaw changed BY THERESA MCMANUS REPORTER tmcmanus@royalcityrecord.com

A Royal City resident is seeking equality for all breeds of dogs. April Fahr, a director with the HugABull Advocacy and Rescue Society, has asked the city to amend its animal control bylaw and remove references to specific breeds as being vicious. An attachment to the city’s bylaw lists 10 breeds of dogs as vicious, regardless of the personality of the individual animal. “They could be a threemonth old puppy, they could be a senior with three legs, but they are vicious,” she said. “What we are asking is we have one standard that applies to all dogs.” The city’s bylaw states that a vicious dog is: any dog that has bitten another animal or human being without provocation, any dog with a known propensity to attack other animals or humans without provocation; any dog that displays unprovoked aggressive behaviour and any dog listed in Schedule A of the bylaw. Schedule A states that the following are deemed to be “vicious dogs” and includes any dog of mixed breeding including: put bull; pit bull terrier; American pit bull terrier;

Memory lane: Bruce and Meryl Chambers have been married 60 years this month. They met in 1952 when Meryl was hitchhiking on Columbia Street.

ruce and Meryl Chambers met when she was hitchhiking in front of the old “Mc&Mc” store on Columbia Street in 1952. The 17-year-old and her girlfriend had made the trek to shop in downtown New West and were looking for a quick ride home when they turned up their thumbs to hitch one. Who knew the ride would last 60 years. “Back then, you could (hitchhike),” Meryl says in an interview at the couple’s Sapperton home, where they’ve lived for the better part of their marriage. Bruce, 22 at the BY NIKI HOPE time, and his friend picked them up. “Two cute girls, why wouldn’t you stop?” Bruce says, smiling. Later that night Bruce and Meryl went on a double date to the movies with their friends. Bruce had had a date with another girl that night but broke plans to be with Meryl. It was Easter weekend 1952. The courtship was quick. By May, they “They always were engaged. Bruce’s proposal said it was another wild story. BRUCE CHAMBERS “I said, ‘Look, loggers never go back to camp with money,’” Bruce says, laughing. “She grabbed it (the bill), and said, ‘You’re crazy.’” Instead of burning the bill, he brought her to a jewelry store and proposed to her. But the bill-burning incident left a mark. At first, Meryl told him no. “You’re crazy,” she says. But his charm won her over, and they

Puchmayr wants gov’t. to intervene

Meters getting upgrades Toonie and loonie changes cost New West $10,000

BY THERESA MCMANUS REPORTER tmcmanus@royalcityrecord.com

Coun. Chuck Puchmayr is convinced New Westminster will pay the price for poor planning. Puchmayr has served a notice of motion that he’d like New Westminster city council to ask the provincial government to intervene and have an independent assessment done of access to the new Port Mann Bridge from the South Fraser Perimeter Road, and to consider the efficient movement of goods to the northeast sector and the long-term air quality for Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley as part of that assessment. Puchmayr is concerned that there’s no direct access for trucks wanting to access the bridge from South Fraser Perimeter Road, which is located on the Surrey side of the Fraser River. “We are told by TransLink that in order to put an onramp onto Port Mann from South Fraser Perimeter Road it would be too steep,” he said. “I went out there with my GPS. I was shocked at how steep the alternative they have built is.” Instead of accessing the bridge directly, Puchmayr said trucks would have to take a 15 kilometre detour that sees them traveling under the Port Mann Bridge, continuing on South Fraser Perimeter Road along the river, traveling up a steep grade and entering the freeway at the Cloverdale exit. “It’s a massive detour,” he said. “It’s 15 kilometres at a steep grade.” Puchmayr believes the result will be increased wear and tear on trucks and increased cost of fuel for trucks. When combined with the tolls planned for the Port Mann, he fears more trucks will head to the Pattullo Bridge and travel through New Westminster. “It’s interesting that TransLink, without showing us any details, says, ‘no, it can’t be done, no it’s too steep,’” he said of a direct connection. “There is no way council or the community can get clarity on that issue. We don’t get any of the science behind what TransLink is telling us.” Puchmayr hopes the province will have more success in getting the data that went into the decision to send traffic to the 176th Street access point, a move he believes will contribute to increased greenhouse gas emissions. “New Westminster should care. The fact they are not making the connection makes the Pattullo Bridge the default for trucks,” he said. “We put that to TransLink. They said the modeling showed the trucks will take that long detour rather than go through New Westminster.” New Westminster isn’t the only community that should be concerned about the proposed connection, added Puchmayr. “I think people in the Fraser Valley should be ◗Bridge Page 10

Many of the parking meters in New Westminster have been upgraded to accept new loonies and toonies. James Doan, the city’s supervisor of parking, said the city has upgraded about 850 parking meters in the city so they accept the new coins. “Unfortunately, New Westminster, like any other city in Canada, we had to cover the cost of the upgrade,” he said. “It’s roughly about $10,000.” Doan said about five per cent of the city’s meters haven’t yet been upgraded to accept the new coins. Decals have been posted on these meters so residents are aware they aren’t accepting the new coins. Doan noted that the city is continuing with the expansion of pay stations that have been tested in Sapperton. As that expansion continues, the rest of the meters will be upgraded to accept the new coins. Earlier this year, the city learned that the Royal Canadian Mint was changing the composition of loonies and toonies from nickel, to a multiply steel composition. The switch in coin composition meant the city had to upgrade its parking meters to recognize the new weights of the coins. J.J. MacKay Canada Limited, which supplies the parking meters to the City of New Westminster, said the new coins have the same monetary value as the previous coins, but have different “electronic signatures” because of their new material compositions. Parking meters recognize the composition or weight of particular coins, and can even determine when a foreign coin has been inserted. www.twitter.com/ TheresaMcManus

What’s in a name? City police find out New West police service becomes a department later this month BY ALFIE LAU REPORTER alau@royalcityrecord.com

From the mouths of babes came a subtle but significant change. The New Westminster Police Service will officially become the New Westminster Police Department later this month, with the launch of a revamped website. Chief Const. Dave Jones said the change will bring the police department in line with all other city departments, but the idea for the change actually came from kids. “At our popular summer soccer camp, the kids would look at their bags and wonder what NWPS stood for,” said Jones. “We kept on hearing that New Westminster Police Service didn’t resonate with them, so we decided to look at a change.” Jones said that when the department went to “police service” in the 1990s under former police chief Jack Fordham, the change was noticed, but as time has gone by, the name became less of an identifying marker. In fact, on the shoulder flashing that officers wear, there’s no denoting service or department, which made it even easier for the police to make the change. “We surveyed our membership, and we also looked at what the costs would be to make the change,” said Jones. “The membership liked the change, it doesn’t cost much, and it just makes sense.” The New Westminster Police Board has approved the change, and the only thing still to be done is to time the name change with the redesign of the police department’s website later this month. “We were already looking at a new website design, so doing these things at the same time makes sense,” said Jones. Police have already been using “police department” in most of their correspondence, and one of the few things left is to use up the last bit of office supplies with the “police service” name on it.

to seven years. But de Jong also gave RCH a 150-day deadline to reduce waiting times. And, yes, we’ve heard those promises before as well. But the reality is that no matter which political party is in power during the next 10 to 20 years, hospitals and health care will be critical. The baby boomer generation is about to peak – and all those aging hips and knees will put a huge strain on the system. Combine that with a potential mini baby boom, and we may all be looking

back at today’s surgery wait-lists and emergency room traffic jams with fond memories. The question isn’t whether the Liberals are serious or not about these announcements. The question is: can taxpayers afford several massive hospital redevelopments in the near future? Our guess is that neither political party wants to tell taxpayers that there’s a massive price tag coming down the line – unless they can blame it on the other party.

Policing pop is not the right solution IN MY OPINION

L

MATTHEW CLAXTON

iving in my head, I have both a libertarian side and a socialist side. They get along surprisingly well, acknowledging that neither of them is always right, but teaming up to point and laugh at people who occupy the muddy middle ground of politics. Today, both sides are rolling their eyes at New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s plan to ban the selling of supersized cups of pop. On the surface, this is a sensible public health policy, even if it does feel like having your mom lean over your shoulder to ask if you should be drinking that much Coke. Pop makes you fat. Lots of other things make you fat, but pop is measured out by the ounce, so it’s easier to regulate than the exact size of a burger patty. My libertarian side objects for all the reasons you would think he does. First, he doesn’t like being told what to do, ever, if he’s not harming anyone else. Whose business is it but mine if I drink 500 litres of Coke a day, dissolving my bones and fattening up

to such a size that small children will use me as a sledding hill, come winter? Second, it isn’t going to work that well. My libertarian side is already coming up with angles, see. He’s a mercenary sort, and he’s going to patent a new drink: MegaSucrose, the pop packed with 40 times more sugar than Coke or Pepsi! You’ll have to eat it with a spoon, but it’ll come in small cups. After that, he’ll probably just start offering a specially priced “free refills” cup of regular pop. Hey, it’s just one cup, right? My socialist side thinks the horse has already left the barn. If you’re going to use public policy to influence behaviour, thinks my leftist brain, starting with the consumer is the worst place to begin. Start with the farmers. Or more specifically, with the vast corporations that have replaced most small farmers. Maybe we could just thin people down by not subsidizing corn? Most of the sweeteners that have been fattening up North Americans over the past few decades are based on highfructose corn syrup. They’re in everything: your pop, of course, but also your barbecue sauce, salad dressing, granola bars, breakfast cereal, doughnuts, specialty coffee drinks, and it’s inside your house right now, my God! The calls are coming from inside your house! The American government

Seniors’ care needs new ideas Dear Editor:

I was very moved to read Art Kube’s letter (Plan with seniors, not for them, In My Opinion, The Record, June 8) in which he writes: “Seniors are an asset, not a liability, to society” and that the driving force of our approach should be “to help seniors stay active, healthy and independent.” As a health-care advocate and seniors’ advocate for many years, and as a community volunteer, I agree with Mr. Kube completely when he says we presently have a hodge-podge of approaches when what we really need is a “comprehensive coordinated approach.” And I also believe that we can learn a great deal from other countries that face similar challenges. One model that is definitely worth examining is the Danish model of integrated community care ◗Pop Page 7 services for seniors – a model in which home sup-

port services, home nursing, outreach programs, assisting living, long-term care and hospital care are effectively coordinated. Seniors have access to a wide variety of home support services according to each person’s specific and changing needs – which are continually assessed by a team of health-care and service providers. Yes, this does involve greater investment in home support, home nursing and outreach programs than we make here in B.C. But Danes with whom I have spoken, as well as health policy experts and seniors’ advocates in B.C. and across Canada, all agree that it is an investment well worth making. Why? First of all, these programs really do allow seniors to live independently longer and enjoy a better quality of life. Secondly, such programs are critical to preventive health care, that is, to not simply treating illness and disease – but working actively to prevent them. And, thirdly, and very importantly,

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR New ideas for seniors’ care ◗ continued from page 6

they are cost-effective. I will be visiting Denmark later this month for a family reunion. (Yes, I must confess at this point that I was indeed born in the country of which I speak!) And I plan to spend some time in Denmark learning first-hand about its system of “integrated community care.” I know how positive my relatives are about the ongoing and critically important support that’s been provided to their aging parents – and how important those supports are to the family as a whole. But I also want to take the opportunity to meet personally with health-care organizations and health-care providers to understand better how these programs actually work. Because, as Art Kube said so eloquently in his letter, seniors are “still alive, still as active as (they) can be, still anxious to build a better province.” And we should treat them as an asset – not a liability. It’s the very least that they deserve! Judy Darcy, NDP candidate, New Westminster

Listen to the residents Dear Editor:

Let me start by saying I have been a longtime resident in Sapperton (25 years). I have watched the corner of East Columbia Street and Sherbrooke Street go from a building with doctor’s offices and a pharmacy to the Elizabeth Fry Society. Over this period of time the area has changed: groups of people loitering, smoking, smoking pot, men with the same issues hanging around and picking up the women that live there, fighting, residents crossing the street to walk on the other side to avoid the people, condoms and needles in the lanes and parks, numerous complaints and phone calls to police by residents, items taken out of people’s yards, drunken or drug-addicted people passing out in yards, relationship fights out in public. All this from the people that live or are

associated with the Elizabeth Fry Society. If this is allowed to proceed it will look more and more like downtown Columbia Street did not so long ago. We are well on our way. I have canvassed a lot of people at the hospital and within the neighbourhood, and not one person said they would drop their children off at a daycare run by the Elizabeth Fry Society with all the things that go on there. I thought about small children being taken to a daycare run by the Elizabeth Fry Society where they would see violence, abuse, addiction and unsafe, erratic chaos. Is this what we want to teach these children? Not a very positive environment. I would like to see the mayor and council drop their children or grandchildren off on a daily basis for a couple of years at the Elizabeth Fry Society’s daycare where things like this are happening right out the door. The only children that will be at the Elizabeth Fry Society’s daycare are the residents’ children, and when that doesn’t work out they will turn that space into more beds to house more women. Isn’t this a great way to have your permit approved by saying the hospital and neighbourhood really need and support the daycare that the Elizabeth Fry Society will provide? I am completely opposed to the official community plan amendment. I feel that if we let the Elizabeth Fry Society encroach on to Kelly Street, then it is only a matter of time before more of the area is bought up and then the area will be wiped out and filled with condos to bring the City of New Westminster more tax dollars and to accommodate the SkyTrain route. I am appalled by the lack of genuine concern by the mayor and council to properly preserve this area. How could you not do a proper assessment of what the people who actually live in the neighbourhood want? I can guarantee you that this promises to be a very contentious issue right up to and during the next municipal election. Juanita Ivings, New Westminster

Pop: Legislation isn’t the answer ◗ continued from page 6

actually takes money from its own taxpayers and then gives it to huge agribusiness firms so that they can then sell U.S. citizens (and us, yay NAFTA!) stuff to make them fat at rock bottom prices. Socialism, in the form of not sucking up to corporations, might actually make for a better capitalism in this case. My socialist side also suspects that clamping down on the advertising of products that are

just carbonated, lightly caramel-flavoured water, might have an impact, too. It believes that the right to aggressively sell people crap is, perhaps, not absolute. Finally, both sides of my brain are incensed that pop and only pop is the target of this plan. Not your snooty craft beers, not your ice wines all full of sugar, not your caramel macchiatos with extra whipped cream? Just pop? So nothing that wealthy yuppies and

hipsters consume in large quantities, then? Just because you got it in a trendy bistro or gastropub does not mean that a food has fewer calories. Beer, wine and a number of coffee drinks are quite high in calories. Yes, you can use laws to help make people thinner. But not all laws are equally fair, effective or useful. Report on bridge-barge crash still not ready alau@royalcityrecord.com

MOONRAKERS PRESENTS

It’s coming up on the first anniversary of a gravel barge running into the Queensborough rail bridge, and the final safety report on the incident still isn’t ready. “We are still getting the initial draft report ready,” said Chris Krepski, spokesman for the Transportation Safety Board of Canada. “We are still in the report-writing phase, and we still need to get comments back.” Krepski said he couldn’t put a timeframe on when the report would be ready, as incident reports like these take time, especially since there are three phases to putting it together. The first two phases, the field and post-field phase, have been completed, and investigators are in the third phase, which is the report production phase. Krepski said after an initial draft is written, it goes out to designated reviewers for comment. Once those comments are analyzed, they go back to the board for approval. The report is written after these changes are incorporated, but that takes some more time, as the report also has to be translated. On June 28, 2011, a gravel barge owned by Mercury Launch and Tug collided with the Queensborough rail bridge, severing the rail link to downtown New Westminster and closing off the North Arm of the Fraser River to boat traffic. At the time of the accident, Frank Butzelaar, president of Southern Railway of British Columbia, the company that owns

the bridge, told The Record that Southern Railway services 30 local companies with the bridge. The bridge has been in service since 1911 and handles eight to 10 crossings per day on average, according to the company. Freight carried over the bridge includes automobiles, forest products and industrial products. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada decided to conduct a full investigation into the incident. Raymond Mathew, marine investigation manager with the safety board, was working on that report when he spoke with The Record in October 2011. “We’re trying to see if we can confirm some more information. We are proceeding with the report. That’s why there’s a delay. It will be a while because TSB reports normally take a year to come out,” Mathew said. “This report is not our only report. We have a lot in other areas.” Mathew said most of the information needed to complete the final report had been collected by October 2011, but investigators were still working to confirm some things and analyze all the gathered information for the final report. A previous Transport Canada investigation found Mercury Launch and Tug, the company that owned the barge shipping the gravel, was in compliance with transportation and safety regulations at the time of the accident. The Fraser River was experiencing a higher than normal freshet and flow rate at the time, and the channel beyond the bridge around Poplar Island is known for being difficult to navigate.

Bylaw: Advocates want changes to dangerous dog legislation ◗ continued from page 1

Staffordshire bull terrier; American Staffordshire terrier; cane corso; Italian mastiff; presa canarios; fila brasileiro; and Argentinian dogo. According to Fahr, a number of Greater Vancouver municipalities have come to realize that applying dangerous dog legislation to specific breeds doesn’t work. She’s urging the City of New Westminster to look at what other communities are doing and change the legislation. Several animal rights advocates attended city council’s June 11 meeting in support of removing breed-specific references in the animal control bylaw. Fahr said she was “very happy” with council’s response to her request. “They didn’t promise anything,” she said. “I felt heard. They treated me very respectfully.” Council has asked staff to report back on the matter. Coun. Chuck Puchmayr agrees that amending the city’s animal control bylaw to remove references to specific breeds of dogs as being deemed vicious may be the way to go. “I have always said it’s not a bad dog, it’s a bad owner. That can happen with any breed of dog,” he said. “I think it is unfair to zero in on a breed of dog.” James Doan, the city’s supervisor of animal services, said staff are reviewing the city’s 2005 animal control bylaw and expect to report back to council in early fall. “Staff have been talking with other local surrounding municipalities to ensure what they do and what we do are similar,” he

said. Doan noted that the city’s goal would be to ensure that safety of the public is upheld. Fahr, who has volunteered at the local animal shelter, said people considering adoption of animals deemed to be vicious breeds (often in the pit bull family) must be informed of the requirements to keep these dogs muzzled. Given the choice of adopting a Labrador retriever with behavioral problems or a pit bull that must be muzzled and look like Hannibal Lecter when it’s out in public, she said most people will opt for the Labrador retriever. Fahr said Delta noticed an increase in its adoption rates after it amended its vicious dogs bylaws. According to Doan, the city’s animal control shelter is currently home to one dog. “For a period of time, we had no dogs at all,” he added. “We had a pigeon and a cat.” In 2005, the city adopted a new animal control bylaw that was intended to allow the city to deal more effectively with barking dogs, by including definitions of “aggressive behavior” and “continuous sound” of dogs. The bylaw also increased dog licence fees, increased the impound time for dangerous dogs, included changes to reflect the contents of the Community Charter, contained a list of dogs deemed to be vicious, and prohibited individuals from keeping wild animals (a lengthy list that included caimans, monkeys, squirrels, raccoons and certain varieties of snakes ,such as boas and pythons). www.twitter.com/TheresaMcManus

concerned,” he said about air quality concerns. “I think the trucking industry should be concerned.” Puchmayr believes there’s still an opportunity to make a better connection from South Fraser Perimeter Road to the new Port Mann Bridge. “I’d like to see the connection made right at the Port Mann Bridge, which certainly would require

some kind of engineering. There is land where the landfill is. It is definitely doable,” he said. “Greater challenges have been overcome in engineering.” Puchmayr worries that a “cheap fix” has been chosen, but it’s a decision that “cops out” on the Gateway program’s intent of moving commercial traffic efficiently through the region. “The South Fraser Perimeter Road should have

been engineered to connect at Port Mann,” he said. Puchmayr put forward his notice of motion at Monday’s council meeting to give fellow councillors time to mull it over before discussing it at the next council meeting. If supported by council, he’d like New Westminster to get support from neighbouring municipalities in calling on the province for an independent assessment.

TAVERNA GREKA CELEBRATES

30 Years

AND IS OFFERING 30% OFF YOUR DINNER BILL MONDAY, JUNE 18TH - SUNDAY, JUNE 24TH Three decades ago, Eleni and Kosta Efstathiadis, and their partner, brought the cuisine of their native, sun drenched country to New Westminster and soon residents flocked to the family-run eatery. Today, Taverna Greka is celebrating its 30th anniversary with a new look and menu items. Taverna Greka is very much a family affair. As you walk in the door, you might be greeted warmly by Eleni or one of her daughters, Koula or Lena. Over the last three years, both daughters, along with their husbands Kosta and Jimmy, are now an integral part of the management team. All agree that its 30-year success lies in the location, atmosphere and their promise of consistently delicious food. If you haven’t been for awhile, it’s time to check out why so many locals and visitors alike consider Taverna Greka the “go-to” restaurant for mouthwatering, authentic Mediterranean gastronomy. Situated on the banks of the mighty Fraser River, the dishes are only rivaled by the views. The vistas are both soothing and relaxing, and the peaceful location of the restaurant means that your time spent here will be memorable. Last September, this delightful restaurant received a makeover. With a capacity now of more than 175 seats, it boasts of high ceilings, an open concept bar and sports lounge, and scenes of the Greek isles. One thing never changed though and that’s providing authentic Greek food its customers have come to expect. “We did keep the heritage hardwood flooring,” adds Eleni. The fare at this Royal City Record multiple award-winning eatery is indeed faithfully Greek. Eleni hails from the island of Evia on the Aegean Sea, which is one of the most popular and unique of all the Greek Islands. From the more famous and common dishes such as mousakka, to other lesser known and traditional dishes, Greek cuisine is a thrill for the taste buds, and Taverna Greka delivers each and every time. Two years ago, Eleni invited award-winning chef Margaritis Voulgaris to come from Greece for six weeks to help overhaul Taverna Greka’s menu. “He revamped many of our existing dishes and created some new ones,” says

Eleni’s daughter Koula. “We believe we have set new standards to traditional Greek food with his help and our food has received many positive comments after his changes.” Ingredients are thoughtfully sourced for quality and flavour, and there are departures from tradition. “Everything is prepared from scratch and made right here, including the homemade desserts and sauces,” says the affable Eleni. Taverna Greka serves a great selection of tasty and unique cuisine, including a great selection of fresh fish and seafood, as well as a number of vegetarian selections such as spanakopita and tyropita. Taverna Greka also dishes out signature fare such as the slow-cooked roast lamb, souvlaki, moussaka, kalamari and its famous appetizer, Saganaki (which is a heavenly marriage of pan fried kefalotiri cheese served with a squeeze of lemon). A true testament of its longevity lies in the fact that Taverna Greka has a number of employees who have been with them for years, including a chef and server with them since its inception. The bar is fully licensed so you can sip on a Greek beer or any number of other specialty drinks, while enjoying traditional Greek cuisine in an ambience of fun and excellent service. For those who want to enjoy a glass of wine with dinner, Eleni offers a nice selection of wines, at various price points, from around the world and a variety of popular B.C. wines. The service is always friendly and with a smile. Eleni, Koula and Lena want your time spent here to be unforgettable. To celebrate three decades of serving up mouth-watering Mediterranean cuisine, Eleni invites you to come in for dinner from Monday June 18 to Sunday June 24, and receive 30 per cent off your dinner bill. It is their way to say thank you to its loyal clientele, as well as to welcome new customers. Meantime, don’t forget that every Friday and Saturday night belly dancers will entertain you.

Congratulations Taverna Greka on your 30th Anniversary MINERVA IMPORTS (Suppliers of Fine Greek Food)

I

NIKI HOPE

n honour of Father’s Day, I sought out New Westminster author JJ Lee to chat about fatherhood, fashion and death and how those topics actually intertwine. Lee wrote The Measure of a Man: The Story of a Father, a Son, and a Suit – a compelling book that has received much praise and numerous accolades, including being shortlisted for the 2011 GovernorGeneral’s Literary Award for Non-Fiction. Lee writes a monthly menswear column for The Vancouver Sun, which is syndicated across Canada, contributes a fashion column for CBC Radio and his personal essays are published in ELLE Canada. Not only is he one of New West’s most-noted authors (he lives here with his wife and two boys), he is likely its best-dressed father. Niki Hope: What compelled you to write about your troubled father and your relationship? JJ Lee: The book came out of the very simple experience that everybody has of having a garment in their closet that they don’t personally own, and it holds mystery, and you can’t let go of it. It belonged to someone important to you for good or for bad, and eventually I bit the bullet and decided to sort of interrogate my father’s last suit, and that became the launching point for that journey. NH: What single item would you leave your sons to remember you by? JL: If it were a single (item), I’m currently working on a book that, because my sons will turn 18 the same year I’ll be

52, which is the age my father passed away … So my boys will be men, and I think the thing I would want to leave them, and what I’m working on, is the current book I’m writing, which is my message to them – if need be, through the veil of death. If I do pass, that book will exist in lieu of me, if I reach that strange, weird time when they are 18 and I’m the age that my father passed away. (His twin boys, Emmet and Jack, are eight.) NH: As a member of the fashion police, what are three mistakes men make that make you want to hand out citations? JL: The number one thing that I still see, even among the English, who I was shocked to find this – never to button the bottom. You’re not supposed to. Never button the bottom button. Another thing is, never shop with a woman. It impedes a man’s own sartorial development and also begins to skew the style language in a direction that has nothing to do with male dress customs, for example, buttoning the bottom buttons. The third thing I would say is when you buy a shirt, alter it. Too many people have shirts that are too blousy and too long in the sleeves. It’s the cheapest thing in the world to take a $25 shirt and give it a $125 fit by spending a couple of shekels at a tailors. NH: What will you do on Father’s Day? JL: We have no plans. Ideally, we’ll go for a bike ride and play catch. NH: You live in New West. What brought you here? JL: The rent brought me here, and the fact that it was close to a SkyTrain line, but what keeps me here is the community. I know dozens of store owners by name. I know where to get good meat. … I love the people in the town. I tell people outside the region, back east, that New West is like having a village in the middle of a metropolis, and I haven’t been able to find that anywhere else. NH: Your book was nominated for several awards, including being shortlisted for the 2011 GovernorGeneral’s Literary Award for NonFiction. Did you expect such a

with impact. I tried to muster my writing abilities and my own deluded ambitions and put it into the writing. I definitely wanted a book that had a quality to it and took the best of what I learned at the CBC and being a print writer for the last 10 years. NH: Your book goes beyond being simply about a “suit.” In my opinion, it’s a deeper meditation on how one fashions their life. Unlike your father, who seemed to struggle to find contentment, are you content with the life you’ve fashioned? JL: Unfortunately no, but I’m fabulously happy with my family. I wish, in many ways, I too were a better father. As much as I asked too much of my own father, I too think that that’s my next project in life – to be a better father. NH: Who is the best dresser in your immediate family? JL: The best dresser in my family is my son Emmet. He’s gifted. He’s prodigious. A new 2.8 kilometre, 60 kilovolt underground transmission circuit will connect New Westminster Substation to an existing transmission line located near Lakefield Drive in a right-of-way close to Robert Burnaby Park. Three cable vaults will also be installed along the route. Construction will begin in early June and is expected to be finished in Fall 2012. Planned hours of work are Monday to Saturday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Royal City resident up for Great Teacher Award AROUND TOWN

THERESA MCMANUS

A

New Westminster resident is in the running for the Great Teacher Award. Edina Bajramovic, a teacher at Alexander Hamilton Elementary in Richmond, recently learned that she is among the finalists in the Great Teacher Awards, a contest put on by Canadian Family magazine to recognize and celebrate the top teachers in Canada. The 500-plus entries were narrowed down to 30, at which point a group of education specialists reviewed the nominations and generated the top 13 nominees. In an email to The Record, Bajramovic states that she has taught kindergarten and grades 2, 3, 4, 6, 7 at Alexander Hamilton Elementary (in Richmond, just across the border from Queensborough) since her graduation from the education program at the University of British Columbia. “Mrs. Bajramovic was nominated by a parent of a student whose life she touched dearly. Now, she needs online votes to beat out the other 12 Canadian teachers for the title of Greatest Teacher,” stated the email. “Mrs. Bajramovic says that both she, as well as the students and community, are excited and have been checking the votes daily. The online voting is gaining momentum, and with more than 9,000 votes. Mrs. Bajramovic was in fourth place on June 11th.” Voting closes on June 30, and people are able to vote once a day. Winners will appear in the August issue of Canadian Family, and the top three teachers will earn a $2,500 prize for their school to go towards supplies and programming. To vote, visit www.cana dianfamily.ca and click on Great Teacher Awards in the Contests section.

Fraser River Discovery Centre is unveiling its newest exhibit with a traditional aboriginal ceremony. Discovery Centre is celebrating the connection between aboriginal people and salmon on the Fraser River with the unveiling of its newest exhibit, Our Bones are Made of Salmon, with a traditional aboriginal ceremony. The event is taking place on Saturday,

June 23 from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Designed around the memories and experiences of Musqueam Elder Larry Grant and Stó:lo cultural advisor Sonny McHalsie, Our Bones are Made of Salmon celebrates the enduring traditions of aboriginal salmon fishing and wind-drying in the Fraser Canyon. Visitors to the exhibit will “meet” the two men through a storytelling video that shares the Musqueam and Stó:lo stories of how salmon came to the Fraser River and how salmon is in the hearts of aboriginal people living along the river. “Through these stories and replicas of aboriginal salmon fishing tools, visitors will learn about the different fishing and preservation techniques and why salmon fishing is vital to aboriginal communities today,” states a press release. “The unveiling ceremony will provide guests with the opportunity to experience aboriginal traditions and protocols, and will include a traditional performance of ‘first salmon’ by Ts’i:eytesh Josette Jim from the Whonnock Tribe.” Aboriginal leaders and government officials will be on hand to unveil the exhibit. To complement the exhibit, a Grade 4 curriculum education program has been developed that will teach students about the importance of salmon to the aboriginal people. “Salmon has sustained West Coast First Nations for thousands of years. I am proud that our elders from the Musqueam and Stó:lo Nations have generously shared their salmon stories using the oral tradition,” said Bertha Lansdowne, Nuxalk Nation and New Westminster school district’s aboriginal education coordinator. “Passing on traditional knowledge is an important aspect of aboriginal culture, and both students and the general public will have an opportunity to learn about the

importance of salmon to First Nations living along the Fraser River.” Seating is limited for the June 23 event celebrating the completion of the exhibit, so people should preregister at info@fraser riverdiscovery.org. Fraser River Discovery Centre is located on the waterfront at 788 Quayside Dr. It’s open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the summer, and admission to its galleries is by donation. For more, visit www. fraserriverdiscovery.org or call 604-521-8401.

Protecting kids

Burnaby-New Westminster MP Peter Julian is renewing his call for a national ban on marketing aimed directly at children. Julian re-tabled his private member’s bill that calls for a national ban on marketing directly aimed at children younger than 13. “It is wrong to take advantage of children who do not have the life experience or maturity to interpret commercial advertising. By the time

typical Canadian children have graduated from high school, they have seen, on average, 350,000 television commercials,” he said. Julian said children lack what experts call the “cognitive defences” that are needed to understand these ads. He added that it’s much more difficult for children and their parents today because young people are targeted with a greater intensity and frequency of ads than any previous generation. Bill C-430, which amends the Competition

Act and the Food and Drugs Act, was developed in collaboration with the Centre for Science in the Public Interest. “This kind of legislative approach protects the rights of children and produces results with health outcomes such as lower obesity as one of the many potential benefits,” Julian said. “If we responsibly regulate the advertising they are exposed to, we can help our children increase their chances of living healthier, better lives.”

◗ ARTS

Top artist featured at gallery

An award-winning New Westminster artist is being featured in a new exhibition at the Van Dop Gallery. On Saturday, June 16, the gallery is presenting a solo exhibition by Angie Au Hemphill. Au Hemphill, a native of Hong Kong, started her art training at the age of 12 with watercolour master Lo Ku Chune. After immigrating to Canada in 1973 and graduating from high school in Edmonton, she went on to study at the Alberta College of Art in Calgary, where she graduated with a bachelor of fine arts degree in 1980. She then moved to Vancouver, where she has been working as a commercial artist and professional painter for more than 25 years. “With a passion for painting, Angie’s images take an ordinary street or nature’s scene and transform it into

effervescent landscapes full of the vitality of life and the energy of art-making,” a press release says. “The imagery is dynamic and has a sense of movement that captures the essence of the ever passing of time and the uniqueness of the moment being depicted.” Au Hemphill’s work is influenced by her admiration for impressionist styles. Au Hemphill is a senior signature member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, a gold-medal winner of the illustrious Spilsbury Medal Award, and two-time recipient of the Federation of Canadian Artists’ award of excellence. Her work can be found in corporate and private collections worldwide. Van Dop Gallery is at 421 Richmond St. Call 604-521-7887 or email gallery@vandopgal

Poetry reading set for Sunday Poetry lovers, take note: If you haven’t stopped by a Poetic Justice reading yet, you still have a chance to do so. The reading series runs Sunday afternoons in the back room at the Heritage Grill in downtown New Westminster. Each reading includes three featured poets and an open mike session, running from 3 to 5 p.m. Coming up next, on Sunday, June 17, is an afternoon featuring Angel Edwards, Margo Prentice and Lilija Valis. Edwards is a singer, songwriter, guitarist and owner of a small music publishing company. Two of her poems were included in Mind Paintings, a poetry anthology from Silver Bow Publishing. Her music can be heard at www. reverbnation.com/angeledwards. Prentice is a self-described poet-

ry reading groupie who has been attending poetry readings for many years. She has MC’d for Poetic Justice on several occasions, and she has been inspired to write some of her own poetry. Prentice also a published story writer and playwright, and she acts, directs and often writes for the Golden Age Theatre group. Valis has an extensive background in government and private work, helping people out of poverty and personal misery. Her poetry book, Freedom on the Fault Line, was published this year, and her work has also been included in two anthologies. The June 17 session will be hosted by Alan Hill. The following weekend, June 24, will see an afternoon featuring Mary Duffy, Sylvia Taylor and Kathleen Katon Tonneson.

Duffy was a child of Newfoundland’s 1960s outport resettlement and has since moved to the West Coast, where she now works in Vancouver as a librarian. Taylor is an award-winning freelance writer, editor, educator and communications specialist, and she also serves as a public speaker and presenter at conferences and in writing programs. Tonneson is a private tutor of fine arts and creative writing. Raised in Cape Town, South Africa, Tonneson has been a professional working artist since 1990. For more about her, check out www.katon.myartchannel.com. The June 24 session will be hosted by Janene White. ◗ HISTORY

City has marked royal jubilees with fanfare OUR PAST

ARCHIE & DALE MILLER

M

uch has been said about the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. In New Westminster there have been many events to mark this auspicious occasion from teas and luncheons to tree plantings and a “21-gun” salute by the Ancient and Honourable

Hyack Anvil Battery. A diamond jubilee for a British monarch has occurred only twice: once this year for Elizabeth II and back in 1897 for Victoria. New Westminster, called the “Royal City” because it was named by Queen Victoria, has proudly marked all the regal anniversaries whether silver, gold or diamond, of all the reigning sovereigns. A connection to royalty is a significant part of this city’s heritage. One hundred and twenty-five years ago in 1887, the city marked the Golden Jubilee of Queen

Victoria with all kinds of festivities and an unusual occasion added to all the other events – it opened a new park and gave it a name. A newspaper account from the middle of June 1887 noted that the City of New Westminster had many events to mark the jubilee. There was horse racing, boat racing a royal salute at noon, and a band playing God Save the Queen. In the afternoon they all headed off to a special ceremony in the “public park” that was of great importance to the town.

The paper noted “the whole military force, including artillery and rifles, headed by the band, marched to the park, where quite a number of citizens had assembled.” The mayor of the day, Robert Dickinson, “addressed a few appropriate remarks to those present” and then he formally declared the park open. This park, Queen’s Park, was “dedicated to the City of New Westminster in honour of Queen Victoria.” We are told that another royal salute was fired with “much enthusiasm and

many congratulations.” The members of the militia were invited to take part in the refreshments at Holbrook House downtown, there was a bazaar at the drill shed, and a “grand torchlight procession” on the Fraser River during the evening. “The whole affair passed off most successfully.” Further research has shown that this was a rather low-key event, but the city did proudly honour Queen Victoria and her jubilee as it opened, dedicated and named its public park. Next year, the city will

formally mark the anniversary of Queen’s Park. This year a lot of information is being gathered about the master plan and future of the park as envisaged by those who use it on a regular or occasional basis. A final note to think about – this coming weekend, on June 16, New Westminster will formally open and dedicate its newest park area, Westminster Pier Park, as it joins our other waterfront amenities – roughly 125 years after a small citizen ceremony in the bush on the hill opened and named its newest park as well.

Farmers’ market fundraiser a record success BY NIKI HOPE REPORTER

nhope@royalcityrecord.com

The Royal City Farmers Market set a new record at its recent fundraiser held recently at Wild Rice restaurant. More than $3,500 ($1,200 more than the previous year) was raised at the event. “We’ve heard such great feedback from people who came, and we want to take a moment to say some thank-yous to those who supported our fundraiser,” said a blog

post from Jen Arbo, operations manager for the market. “First, we want to say a heartfelt thanks to the staff at Wild Rice. They took our idea to offer dishes made with our vendors’ local products and ran with it, creating three special menu choices to choose from, and went over and above to offer a great cocktail menu and inventive dinner service.” Arbo also thanked Re-Up BBQ, the New Veganminster Project and market vendor Rockweld Farm for being menu sponsors

to help offset the costs of the dishes to keep ticket prices low. “These people stepped up without question and really supported what we were trying to do,” Arbo wrote. She noted the work done by Of Desks, who did a “fabulous” job of designing the tickets and made a donation to help offset the costs of printing. Arbo also thanked businesses that donated to the silent auction and bought tickets. To see the post, which includes

pictures from the event, visit http://rcfm. ca/2012/06/03/fundraiser-roundup. The Royal City Farmers Market launched on June 7. The market is held at Tipperary Park every Thursday, rain or shine, and runs until Oct. 4. “We’re really excited for the season to begin,” Arbo told The Record before the summer market launched. “There’s lots of new and exciting stuff, as well as many familiar faces.” www.twitter.com/nikimhope

Coaching amongst his peers BY TOM BERRIDGE SPORTS EDITOR tberridge@royalcityrecord.com

One of Simon Fraser University’s new assistant coaches is just one step beyond the playing field. Former Douglas College keeper Nour Fathy is getting what he believes is a chance of a lifetime after accepting a coaching position with the undefeated defending two-time champion NCAA Division II Great Northwest conference men’s soccer team. “Honestly, I’m very happy and grateful this opportunity came up, and I’m going to work hard to make the most of it,” said the Moscrop Secondary grad, who last year finished near the top of the PacWest conference goalkeeping leaders with three shutouts and a sparkling 0.92 goals against average with the Douglas College soccer team. Fathy was named an assistant coach with varsity Clan along with James Merriman from Nanaimo on June 4. “(Coaching) is just a passion of mine,” said Fathy, an Egyptian-born footballer who came to Canada in 1996. “I’ve been coaching since I’ve been 16. It’s just something I’ve loved to do, and I just want to give back for everything I’ve received from the game.” Starting Aug. 1, Fathy will get that chance and a first-hand experience in top-level coaching amongst many players his peer. At just 22 years of age, Fathy might well be of similar age to many of the players he will have the responsibility to instruct. But like most of the challenges he has faced, it is one Fathy embraces. “I’ve always prided myself as a leader on the field, and, as I see it, I want to be a leader with my players,” he said. That challenge is not new for Fathy who began his coaching career with teams that were often

A coaching decision: Former Douglas College student Nour Fathy was recently named an assistant coach with the SFU varsity men’s soccer team. only a few years his junior. He also has professional experience, having coached with the Vancouver Whitecaps W-League team in 2010. When he was 16, Fathy was playing soccer with Mountain FC

in the Super-Y League and one day was asked by a couple of his coaches if he wanted to help out. “From there, it just grew more and more and more, and now I’m just trying to take the opportunities and grow with them,”

Fathy said. “It’s not easy. There are times it’s challenging, but like life, we go through challenging times all the time.” While still a teenager, Fathy helped lead an under-14 Mountain team to the North American semifinals, and later took a u-15 and u16 team to the continental Super-Y finals. He also coached a u-13 Burnaby Selects team to a Metro regular season championship, while juggling sideline duties with the u-16 and u-18 Mountain teams in the B.C. Soccer premier league. Perhaps not surprisingly, conflicts began to creep into his own on-field playing time. Fathy said the leadership he learned while playing the beautiful game translated into helping him make that transition to the sidelines. “I’ve been very blessed with being surrounded by the right people,” Fathy said. “You just have to take those opportunities and grow with them.” Fathy will begin that growth helping head coach Alan Koch build on an already very successful program. “As long as I show (the players) respect and care for the program, I’m sure it’s going to be mutual,” Fathy said. “I’m not worried. Obviously coach Koch believes in me to bring me on. The big thing is to build on a successful season.” At SFU, Fathy will continue to pursue his criminology studies while on Burnaby Mountain. And like his school days and even his later years in college, coaching will continue to be a big part of it. “On Mondays I’ll go to school in the morning and double sessions (of practice) in the afternoon. The same goes for Tuesday, with Wednesday my rest day,” said Fathy of his prospective routine. “Honestly, I wouldn’t change it for the world. It keeps me busy and around the right people.”

Jerome Classic kicks off NTL circuit Nearly 30 Olympic standards were met at the Harry Jerome International Track Classic last weekend. Canadian athletes achieved 16 of the 29 Olympic standards at the Sunday meet, which kicked off the National Track League season in the Pacific Northwest. Among the most notable were five Olympic A standards, including four by Canadians. Liz Gleadle highlighted the meet with a new Canadian record throw of 61.15 metres in the women’s javelin. New Westminster’s Krista Woodward placed runner-up in the javelin with a throw of 53.27m.

Canadian shotputter and Commonwealth gold medalist Dylan Armstrong also had an A toss of 21.24m. Simon Fraser University grad Jessica Smith became just the fourth Canadian runner to break the two-minute barrier in the 800m, matching the A standard with an exciting first-place finish time of 1:59.86, beating American Alice Schmidt by less than onetenth of a second. In the 100m hurdles, heptathlete Jessica Zelinka of Calgary finished first in an impressive field, posting a new personal best and reaching A standard with a 12.76 clocking. Zelinka beat out American

runner-up Ginnie Crawford and former Olympic medal winner Perdita Felicien, who both also ran under 13 seconds. Anglea Whyte and Nikkita Holder of Canada both posted B times in the women’s hurdle sprint. In the women’s 800m, Melissa Bishop and Lemlem Ogbasilassie also made B standard times, while former Commonwealth Games medallist Diane Cummins finished in a time of 2:01.11 to also make the Olympic standard. Nicole Sifuentes of Winnipeg won the women’s 1,500m in a B standard time of 4:06.90. Mélanie Blouin of Québec won the women’s pole vault with a B

standard jump of 4.40m. Ontario’s Sultana Frizell won the hammer throw with B standard distance of 69.74m. Three Canadian men also made B standard, including 25-year-old Burnaby javelin thrower Curtis Moss, who surpassed 80 metres twice during the meet. Moss won the event with a personal-best throw of 80.43m. High jumper Mike Mason won his field event at 2.28m, while Geoff Harris on Nova Scotia also met standard with a fourth-place time of 1:46.29 in the 800m. Canada’s track and field Grand Prix series continues this weekend in Edmonton. – tberridge@royalcityrecord.com

’Bellies add depth

The New Westminster Salmonbellies added some depth to its transition game with the addition of Calgary native Jesse Fehr this week. Fehr, who was a third-round pick of the Edmonton Rush in last year’s draft, played three games in his debut in the National Lacrosse League this season. Fehr played three seasons of field lacrosse at Harvard University before moving to Duke to work on his masters, where he accompanied the Blue Devils to the NCAA final four. The acquisition of the 25-year-old, 6-2 transition player will hope to address New Westminster’s recent losing slump and help shore up a defence that is missing backenders Rory Smith and Curtis Manning this season. Fehr is currently employed as the technical director of the Alberta Lacrosse Association.

Nowack crossed the finish line at Barnet Marine Park in Burnaby in a time of 4:20.06. The enduro course included 10km of kayaking, 6km of trekking, 18km of mountain biking, a 7km orienteering stage through the Simon Fraser University cam-

11 minutes behind. Victoria’s Hayden Earle was third. Vancouver’s Mike Rascher, an Olympic gold medallist in rowing at the 1992 Barcelona Games, finished in fifth place behind Norm Thibault of Nanaimo. The shorter 30km sport course, which contained the same kayaking, trekking, orienteering and mountain biking challenges, was won by Victoria’s Gord Webster and Paul Hooper. New Westminster and Burnaby

district school teachers Chad (New Westminster Secondary) and Jennifer Oatway (Byrne Creek Secondary) were runners-up. The husband-and-wife team were the co-ed winners for a second year in a row at the Burnaby event, following a third overall finish in 2011. More than 200 racers and volunteers from Washington and Oregon states and from all over B.C. took part in the race. – tberridge@royalcityrecord.com

COLLIER, Kenneth

December 1, 1921 - June 1, 2012

With sadness we announce the passing of Kenneth Harden Collier. Ken worked for the BC Fire Marshal’s office from 1953 - 1986 and was Commissioner of Fire Safety 1979 - 1986. Born in Kamloops and growing up in Vancouver, Ken was a natural athlete who excelled at lacrosse and soccer, perhaps inspired by his maternal grandfather who was captain of the Glasgow Celtics. Ken developed a lifelong love of music, learning trumpet and later playing in the Westminster Regiment marching band in many PNE parades. In WW2 Ken volunteered for overseas service and was a machinist in the army, a trade he had learned at Hastings Brass. He joined the Fire Marshal’s office on the provincial hydrant standardization project and then as inspector. He completed a degree in Public Administration and later achieved his Fire Engineering credentials (IFE). He became Deputy Fire Marshal and later Commissioner of Fire Safety. Over the years Ken evolved from a man of quiet reserve to an entertaining speaker and story-teller. His many interests included salmon fishing with friend Mike Sheldon, and golfing with his fire service friends and Burnaby Mountain Seniors’ Golf Club. Ken married Anne Skrypnyk of Revelstoke in 1949 and they enjoyed 40 years together raising daughters Sharon and Maureen, enjoying their home and beautiful garden and many adored dogs. Sadly, Anne passed away in 1989. Older brother Bill also predeceased him. Ken will be remembered as a kind, warm-hearted, generous person who valued his many enduring friendships. He deeply loved his family and received in return our great respect for his integrity and compassion. He was a truly honourable man. Ken is survived by Marjorie King, his dear partner for twenty years, his daughters Sharon (Peter) and Maureen (Jim) and his beloved granddaughter, Lauren (Arend). A special thank you to staff of Burnaby Hospital ward 3C for the excellent care Dad received. A celebration of Ken’s life will be held Thursday, June 21 at 1:00 p.m. in the Firefighters Conference Centre, 6515 Bonsor Avenue, Burnaby. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the SPCA or the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Cancer June 21-July 22: Your month of quietude ends Wednesday – until then, rest, seek the spiritual, fulfill old obligations and deal with the government. These matters will proceed quite smoothly Sunday, less so Monday. Your energy rises midweek, but obstacles exist in home and relationship areas. (Your intuition’s superb Tuesday afternoon – act upon any tiny, calm urge.) Chase money, buy/sell, contact someone friendly and sexy, propose a business or career plan or project – everything runs smoothly, at least on the surface. (Realize your ambitions might create hidden opposition in a mate or another.) Leo July 23-Aug. 22: Enjoy friends, flirtations and a cheerful mood Sunday to Tuesday morning. That’s the end of your celebratory mood for a few weeks, as a phase of weariness, solitude, quietude and recuperation begins Wednesday. Use these weeks ahead to contemplate your direction and surroundings, to plan future actions, and to deal with government agencies. Be charitable, spiritual. You’re tired Tuesday to Thursday, but your energy and magnetism return Friday/Saturday. Despite this quieting influence, your hopes will grow even stronger, and your friendships bright. A wish will come true soon! Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: An ambitious period ends by Tuesday – but it was just the first step – the whole year ahead will bless your strivings and boost your position. Midweek begins a month of celebration, popularity, good times, entertainment, optimism, and wish fulfillment. However, you’re still struggling with money, spending and income (until October) so don’t let joy interfere with financial realities (especially Wednesday). Thursday night brings a slow-down: rest through Saturday; contemplate, plan, be charitable, contact head office or a government agency. A “feeling” about marriage is correct.

for your new one bedroom home

Aries March 21 - April 19: You’ll be really busy Sunday to mid-morning Tuesday, then suddenly a month of “stopping” starts. Rest, hibernate, garden, enjoy nature, focus your efforts on home, family, and security. This is NOT a good time to relocate or buy a home, but mid-2013 onward will be, so wait if you can. However, puttering, repairing will be fine, if you start after Wednesday noon. You have a few major problems/decisions to deal with this decade: these become apparent this week and next. They involve home/security, marriage/relationships, and career/ worldly position. Romance calls late week. Taurus April 20-May 20: A restless, travel-prone month begins Wednesday. You might discover new places to live, even as early as this Friday/Saturday. Several big changes have taken place lately: you now face a new and growing set of social contacts, wishes, and hopeful involvements. This is just beginning, and will fill the years ahead. Your money picture has also changed: the “asset chase” is over, but the 12 months ahead will boost your income fortunes, perhaps wildly! The biggest change of all is that the big changes of the last year are over, done. Great home, family, realty luck Friday/Saturday. Gemini May 21-June 20: Your energy and charisma remain high. In love, your prospects expand – you can “catch” almost anyone. But therein lies the rub: proceed carefully (now to mid2013). Decide what traits in another speak of a good mutual future, and which traits hint at the opposite. The only thing refused you Sunday/Monday might be family, social, realty or security luck. So ask for what you want, start important projects. Be careful with spending midweek. Thursday night to Saturday brings curiosity, new facts, travel, casual friends – new friends – and many little details. A prize lurks here!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: A month of dreaming and thinking wisps away mid-week, replaced by ambition, practicality, pressures and demands. This arena has not been super easy or rewarding for you over the last two years, mainly because you valued caution and skepticism over effort and belief. This will continue to October, then you’ll bounce up again. Meanwhile, through July, hold up your end at work and solve problems rather than initiate projects. Many of these problems are relationship ones, which you are uniquely qualified to handle. Thursday night to Saturday fulfills wishes – romance, popularity arrive! Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: A month of changes, investments, big finances, sexual urges and secrets/discoveries is almost over – but great luck will accompany you in these areas until mid2013. Be wary of a financial commitment Sunday/ Monday, though. It might have a glitch, especially if machinery or a co-worker (or your employment) is involved. Talking it over, though, is a good idea. Midweek brings an expanded consciousness, wisdom, a mellow mood – to last several weeks. You want to understand rather than blame. Your career or prestige drives meet excellent responses Friday/ Saturday – charge forth! Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: Deal with an important relationship Sunday/Monday. Romance is not favoured but monetary, social and work relationships should go well. A new contact might open doors in future. Beware losing your temper Monday night. Midweek begins a month of investigation, mysteries, financial commitments, sexual urges and lifestyle changes. Your subconscious will rise to the surface; your intuition will be high. Still, this is a dicey midweek and month ahead: snags lie under the surface, so keep your boat on putt-putt speed. Love, joy, understanding, and travel arise Friday/Saturday!

June 17 - 23, 2012 Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: A month of work saves its biggest for last – Sunday to Tuesday end a work month, but they might trigger a new work project. The 12 months ahead will be filled with duties and expanded chores. (A great year to find better employment, and to purchase machinery – the best opportunities come AFTER August.) Tuesday/Wednesday begin a month of crucial relationships. This decade, in general, you’re in control, you carry the ace; but for the next few weeks another can demand – and get – their way. So be diplomatic, flexible: therein lies opportunity. Late week: riches in some form. Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: A new romance might appear Sunday/Monday. It might suffer from sexual, communications or “visiting hours” glitches, so be alert. There will be at least two significant opportunities for real romance in the 12 months ahead, especially after August. Mid-week starts a month of work and health concerns – and neither will be easy. So step carefully, avoid co-worker conflicts, sleep, eat and dress sensibly, and visit the MD if anything’s wrong. You’ll be aided by great intuition: following your instincts will keep you out of trouble. Relationships, exciting meetings, late week! Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: You’ve been subtly held back over the last few weeks. There’s another phase of this Sunday/Monday, then a month begins that features romance, beauty, creativity, self-expression, beauty and passion. It won’t be the easiest month, as several big “dislocations” occur in the world which will affect you and those you love. But for you these will be glancing blows, whereas for others they can be direct. Still, romance (more correctly, intimacy) is difficult when everyone’s screaming “crisis!” Friday/Saturday let you accomplish chores with super ease – buy a car or computer. timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 604-727-3673
