Sapperton residents concerned about future plans that call for an incinerator BY THERESA MCMANUS REPORTER tmcmanus@royalcityrecord.com

Sapperton residents are starting to feel like it’s open season on their neighbourhood. On Monday, New Westminster city council supported a local business’s plan to expand its current construction and demolition waste operations in the Braid industrial area. Council did not endorse its proposal for a plastics recycling facility that would convert ground plastic waste into ultrasweet crude oil. According to Harvest Power, the new state-of-the-art facility would divert construction and demolition waste from the landfills and would help the region reach its waste diversion goals. Harvest Power would contribute $10.5 million toward the project and hopes the Green Infrastructure Fund would contribute $5.5 million. Harvest Power provided a fact sheet that stated the sorted recyclables will be sold and the recoverable wood fraction would be transformed into various types of biofuel. In addition, Harvest Power had sought

Residents wants Telus HD boxes stopped Petition being circulated to try and stop installation of boxes BY THERESA MCMANUS REPORTER tmcmanus@royalcityrecord.com

A petition is being circulated in New Westminster to protest the installation of high definition boxes in residential areas. Connaught Heights resident Heather Curry started a petition after Telus started installation of a HD box next to her home. The petition stated that residents are concerned about the installation of the boxes in residential areas and want all the boxes to be placed in commercial areas. “We object to HD boxes being put into any residential areas,” said the petition. “Further, we object to the instalment of the HD boxes, such as the one on 21st Street between Eighth Avenue and Edinburgh, being done without any consultation with the residents of the community and without any notice.” According to Curry, Telus made no effort to talk to her family about the appearance or the location of the box that’s going in next to their home of 13 years. “No consultation, nothing,” she said. “They didn’t tell us – Telus didn’t tell us.” The cement foundation for the box has already been installed and a metal box will be placed on top in the near future. “Look at it – it is just disgusting. It is disgusting for us to look at but for the general public,” Curry said. “How can you have something that obtuse in a place where people will walk?” Curry said “it just seems wrong” that the box has been situated in a right of way that’s commonly used by people ◗Box Page 4

information before making a decision on that matter. Wayne Davis, one of the founders of Harvest Power Inc., said the plastic begins as a petroleum so the conversion process is actually bringing the product’s lifecycle to a full circle. He said chemical processes are used to convert dirty plastic into crude oil. “There is no emissions from it,” he said. “The crude oil would be trucked out and sent to a refinery in Washington State where it would be refined.” A Harvest Power document stated that one of the challenges in processing construction and demolition waste is dealing with plastics that are frequently too dirty to get recycled and therefore go to landfills. The proposed plastics recycling facility would convert those plastics to crude oil. Coun. Bob Osterman said the company needs to engage the community in discussions about its plans. “The biggest single topic in this town is traffic, traffic, traffic,” he said. “It won’t go away.” City administrator Paul Daminato said council will provide a letter of support to

Harvest Power for the grant application to expand its construction and demolition waste facility. The company would be required to meet all zoning and regulatory requirements for the expansion to proceed. Sapperton resident Ross Heichendorf was disappointed that council would support the expansion even though the company had provided no information about how many additional trucks would be accessing the site. “That’s crazy,” he said. Sapperton resident Mary Ann McKenzie said it feels like it is “shooting season” on Sapperton, noting the neighbourhood is already struggling to deal with TransLink’s plans for the United Boulevard extension. “I wouldn’t let my sons work there. There is going to be a lot of construction and demolition waste coming in. I would be concerned for their health,” she said, adding some of those products could contain asbestos and other harmful materials. “We need tons more information to know if this is something we have to fight as a community.” Although an incinerator isn’t planned in the first phase of the project at the New Westminster site, a report presented to

council indicates it’s being considered for the future. “In a planned follow-on phase, the reclaimed wood will be used to fuel a combined heat and power plant to built on the premises. It could provide district heating to the adjacent Royal Columbian Hospital and other nearby users while the electricity will be fed into the city-owned power grid and increase the amount of renewable energy in the regional grid. The project will create or preserve dozens of clean technology jobs.” According to the Harvest Power document, the project will be conducted with the “close cooperation and consultation” of Metro Vancouver and the City of New Westminster. Harvest Power is based in Massachusetts and owns two Lower Mainland wood waste companies. It purchased the Urban Wood Waste recyclers in September 2010. “It’s an age-old term – it’s called a slippery slope,” said New Westminster resident James Crosty about a decision that could pave the way for an incinerator. Crosty said the company should have been more prepared with the information it was presenting to council and should have consulted with the community.

He said the company has been working on these plans for some time but only came forward as the deadline for the funding application neared. Babcock said the company is willing to consult with the community, but hasn’t done so to date regarding its plans for the site. Council suggested the company should meet with the McBride-Sapperton Residents’ Association. According to a Harvest Power submission to city council, the company was founded in 2008 to provide industry leading technology and project development capability to harness the renewable energy in organic waste. “Harvest is a successful and innovative company operating at the forefront of the green technology revolution,” said a proposed letter of support from the city drafted by Harvest Power. “The company was recently named to the Cleantech 100 (Top Global Cleantech companies) and was designated Emerging Company of the Year by the New England Clean Energy Council. It has a track record of beneficial partnerships with National Resources Canadian and the British Columbia Bioenergy Network.” www.twitter.com/TheresaMcManus

Alberta DNA revives city sex assault case

40th Annual

HYACK FESTIVAL

BY BRENT RICHTER REPORTER brichter@royalcityrecord.com

Police in Alberta have arrested and charged a man they say is linked by DNA to an unsolved sexual assault in New Westminster dating back to February of 2010. Leduc RCMP, working with Edmonton Police Service and Vegreville RCMP, arrested a man in Leduc County in January following a reported sexual assault. Det. Sean Armstrong of Edmonton Police’ sexual assault section said DNA collected from the alleged Leduc victim was a match to DNA collected from three other alleged sexual assault victims in Alberta going back to 2004 as well as the alleged New West victim. The match was made through Canada’s national DNA databank where DNA collected from crime scenes can be cross-referenced with known offenders and other unsolved crimes. “We were in contact with New Westminster Police (in 2010) and we were trying to put some things together but we weren’t getting very far,” Armstrong said. That has now changed and New Westminster Police are now aware of the development, he said, adding that he is in the process of compiling information from the Alberta investigations to send to New Westminster. New Westminster Sgt. Bruce Carrie said the new DNA match has breathed life into an old investigation. “Edmonton (Police) got a hold of us quite recently with respect to the situation. It’s with our major crimes section to continue on with the investigation at this point to work up a file and a charge,” said Carrie. “We have what I would term a very strong suspect for a sexual assault here based on DNA evidence and now we have to work to connect that DNA evidence in a fashion that goes to court.” Carrie could not release any information about the 2010 sexual assault and said it would likely be one to two months before the local investigation is complete. He said without the DNA databank, it’s unknown if police would have ever found a suspect in the 2010 assault. “It is a very good tool. It is the new technology age of fingerprints,” he said.

walking to the 22nd Street SkyTrain station or Connaught Heights Elementary School. “It’s where you walk,” she said about the section of 21st Street near her home. “We have no sidewalks.” Curry said no one from Telus contacted her family, who only learned about the plan when the contractor hired by Telus came to their door to inform them that underground wiring was being installed next to their home. “Do we want it? No,” she said. “Had you asked, we might have been able to say where we might want to see it.” Telus spokesperson Shawn Hall said the company is installing “radically-fast” Internet and Optic TV service, which requires infrastructure such as that contained in the HD box. He said the company is spending $18.5 million to expand its high definition network. “We did offer to move it north about five metres,” he said about a contractor’s visit to the Curry’s home. “He (the homeowner) turned it down.” Telus believes the box is being located in an appropriate location given that it’s a city-owned utilities right-of-way and is on a side street. Telus is willing to cover the box in a graffiti-resistant, decorative wrap or to provide landscaping around the box.

But council just advised the company to talk with the local residents. That’s simply not good enough. Residents deserve answers – before council discusses the request. And then there’s the elephant in the room – the incinerator. While council’s support for the waste facility expansion grant doesn’t necessarily lead to a much sought after incinerator – it certainly makes the argument for one at the site a lot easier. We can hear the reasoning: “We’ve already got a massive amount of waste

on site, why would we truck it out to an incinerator miles away?” Hard to argue with. City council should have tabled this preliminary request until it received more information on a number of points. And, it should be thinking much more about how this expansion will impact Sapperton, and how it may, or may not, fit in with current traffic plans. Council has, by rubber-stamping this request as quickly as it did, sent a message to Sapperton residents, and it’s not a very respectful one.

IN MY OPINION

Independent schools serve need Dear Editor:

Re: The real truth about ‘private’ schools, In My Opinion, The Record, May 13. Either in ignorance or crassness, Mr. Claxton, using very broad strokes, did a great injustice to at least some families whose children attend “private schools.” He would be more accurate and less inflammatory if he referred to “private schools” as independent schools, as that is their proper designation after all. But what exactly are independent schools independent from? That is the million-dollar question. I can’t speak to Mr. Claxton’s Langley educational milieu, but in New Westminster, an independent school would be free from the influence of a long-inthe-tooth board of education and its several layers of bureaucracy. Independent of too many self-serv-

ing groups. Independent of a system where children don’t always come first. When my children were younger, I had every expectation that they would go K-12 through the public school system. Such is not the case now. I have a child in an independent school and am unspeakably grateful. My neighbourhood public school failed my child. Not just failed my child but did harm. The school was and is too busy trying to cram more kids into an already overcrowded situation. Finally in an independent school, my child is flourishing. Rather than administrators and teachers telling me what they won’t do for my child, I have an entire school excited to tell me what they have done and will be doing. So here’s my plan Mr. Claxton. Particularly in the case of my child’s independent school, it should be ◗Private Page 7

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Private schools have a role ◗ continued from page 6

100 per cent publicly funded as it addresses a need rather than choice. With strokes equally broad to your own, I’ll further make an argument to increase funding to independent schools as in this age of evidence-based decision-making, independent schools are achieving more with public education dollars than public schools. Kelvin Chao, New Westminster

Defending private schools

Dear Editor:

Re: The real truth about ‘private’ schools, In My Opinion, The Record, May 13. Perhaps Mr. Claxton should educate himself on what our “private” schools do for British Columbian children and how much of the public’s tax dollars go to help to educate them. I feel the need to “school” him. Private and independent schools are a well-established part of the educational landscape in British Columbia. About 65,000 students attend B.C. private schools. The network of private and independent schools in B.C. offers a wide range of choice and diversity. Jewish, Mennonite, Montessori, Waldorf, Sikh, Seventh-Day Adventist, special needs, First Nations, various Christian denominations, as well as secular day and boarding schools, offer a spectrum of choice to parents. Partial funding of private and independent schools by the B.C. government is recognition of the contribution these schools have made in the education of children in the province. More than 85 per cent of private schools in B.C. are partially funded by the provincial government – receiving between 35 and 50 per cent of the public school perpupil grant, depending on the category of the school. Private and independent schools receiving government grants must employ B.C. certified teachers and offer educational programs consistent with meeting the outcomes of the provincial mandated curriculum. Independent schools account for about 10 per cent of B.C.’s K-12 student population. Independent and private schools receive more than $150 million in funding annually. It would cost the B.C. government an estimated $750 million to $1 billion of new capital funding to accommodate all independent and private school students in public schools. Would that help the “system that’s starved for cash”? Teresa Clarke, New Westminster, ‘coddled’ parent and teacher in the independent system

Columnist got it wrong Dear Editor:

Re: The real truth about ‘private’ schools,

In My Opinion, The Record, May 13. It’s hard to know where to start after reading about why Mr. Claxton thinks funding to independent schools should be shut down. The condescending tone with which he wrote could warrant more comment, but I will move on to his actual arguments, which, had he done some research, would have revealed that his points have all been made before and rejected, with very good reason. Independent schools are all about having choice in education. The comparison he makes with health care being accessible to all, rather than bolstering his anti-independent school rant, undermines it. Unless I’m mistaken, B.C. residents are free to choose their doctor without having to pay extra to do so. By this logic, parents should be free to choose where they send their children to school without having to pay for the privilege. Then all parents, whatever their means, would have access to their school of choice. As to Claxton’s point about the funding for independent schools starving cashstrapped public schools of much-needed funds, he must realize that parents who opt to send their children to an independent school in fact save the government money. If the approximately 11 per cent of provincial student enrolment currently choosing independent schools were in the public system, we taxpayers would be shelling out even more cash for education than is currently the case. As it is, independent school students cost the government half of what it costs to educate a public school student. The funding issues currently experienced by the public schools are not the fault of parents paying twice to send their children to independent schools. So Mr. Claxton’s argument that independent schools are built on the backs of the poor does not hold water. Monique VanderWart, New Westminster

Make smoking less easy Dear Editor:

Re: Province shows sense on smoking issue, Our View, The Record, May 13. At first blush, giving free patches to smokers to assist them in quitting their habit seems a real fine idea. But I wonder. Were I in the grip of a nicotine habit and faced with the fact that said habit kills 6,000 British Columbians a year, I’d be into London Drags in a hurry and paying for my own patch. (After all it’s cheaper than a cigarette habit.) Faced with the thought that 26 per cent of cancer deaths are from lung cancer, I’d be first in line when the drug store opens in the morning. And yet there you have it at Sixth and Sixth. Right outside the entrance to the drug store: Smoke City! ◗Smoking Page 8

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Smoking is just not ‘cool’ ◗ continued from page 7

And then there are the kids. Young women in particular seem bent on an early career in self-destruction. I guess now they can be assured of free patches when they think it opportune to give up the weed, but surely the word is out by now that it’s no longer “cool”

to go through life sucking on a ciggy so that some three-piece suited CEO can take home millions? Seems to me that the only way to get folks to quit is to make it less and less comfortable for them to continue their habit. Cleaning out the entranceway to London Drugs and TD Bank of smokers might be a place to start.

representatives of various developments, and so on. There is obviously considerable interest in this little stretch of freeway as people understand the huge impact it will have. Third, although we were often told by the facilitators that we were not there to discuss why we should not have the United Boulevard extension, the questions of whether this is the right thing to do at this time, what the plans are for the Patullo Bridge, and how this connector fits into the overall transportation picture in New Westminster, were not adequately addressed and they became the constant proverbial “elephants in the room.” Fourth, at the third workshop, where the five options (A to E) and the various sub-options were presented, virtually every single table started their reporting back presentation with a rejection of Options B1 and B2. There was almost

unanimous agreement that if we have to go ahead with the United Boulevard extension, Option E is the “least worst” option. Yet, at the fourth workshop, TransLink came back with Options B1 and B2 as their obviously preferred option, and essentially only agreed to keep Option E on the table because people demanded it. Then we were asked to spend the rest of the workshop discussing how we would mitigate noise, design lovely landscaping, and so on, despite the fact that people were clearly unhappy with the direction the process was going in. Thus, as we prepare for the big announcement, it’s important to note that although options B1 and B2 may have came from an idea sketched out by a participant at the second workshop, it is apparent to me that it is not a community-generated, nor community-endorsed, proposal. Although I think

TransLink should be given credit for putting significant effort into these workshops, I truly believe that options B1 and B2 are not at all in the best interest of New Westminster (although it services Coquitlam’s needs quite nicely) and should be rejected by council. This project should not be undertaken until the entire big picture is worked out: the South Fraser/North Fraser Perimeter Road network, the Patullo Bridge replacement/repair, the inevitable bottlenecks at Brunette/East Columbia, Front Street, Stewardson and the Queensborough Bridge. Undertaking an expensive Band-Aid traffic solution that will still have a significant negative impact on not just Lower Sapperton but all of New Westminster is simply foolish. Unfortunately, after four workshops and lots of feedback, I don’t think TransLink gets it yet. Monica Hardjowasito is a New Westminster resident.

River levels up, but no worries yet BY ASHLEY OWENS REPORTER editorial@royalcityrecord.com

While river levels are above normal, flooding is not something that is of concern for local residents just yet. The Lower Fraser basin sits at 150 per cent of normal, according to data from the May 1 snow survey and water supply bulletin. The data also revealed that due

to cool April temperatures, snow packs have been increasing, which has caused delay in the melting of snow. “At this time, there are no issues on the main river systems of the province,” said Cheekwan Ho of media relations for the ministry of forests, lands and natural resource operations. “It will still be one to two weeks before we see significant flows on these systems.”

While the levels are not of any immediate concern, monitoring will continue to ensure proper warnings are made clear to the public. “At this stage, weather is going to be the determining factor in terms of when and how high flows get in the various rivers of the province,” said David Campbell of the River Forecast Centre. Generally, flooding occurs when

there is a spell of hot weather followed by cool and rainy conditions. The snow survey and water supply bulletins are conducted eight times per year from Jan.1 to June 15. Hyack Festival kicks off this weekend BY THERESA MCMANUS REPORTER tmcmanus@royalcityrecord.com

The Hyack Festival Association will kick off its 40th annual festival with a bang on New Westminster’s waterfront this weekend The official grand opening of the Hyack Festival is returning to the waterfront, where a celebration is taking place at LaPerla Ballroom. In recent years, the fireworks have been shot off from Queensborough, but they’re once again being shot off from a barge in front of River Market. “River Market is the festival

area. It is where the festival happens and where our opening celebrations happen as well,” said Melanie Vogel, executive director of the Hyack Festival Association. “For people attending the event, it will be the best spot in town to see the fireworks. It’s a beautiful view.” The grand opening celebration, which takes place on Saturday, May 21 from 8 p.m. to midnight, includes a view of the fireworks, appetizers, entertainment and dancing. Tickets are $25 or two for $40. For many folks, the fireworks

signal the beginning of the annual Hyack Festival. A number of events will take place on the Victoria Day long weekend, including Family Days in Queen’s Park. “We have lots of entertainment lined up for Family Days on Sunday and Monday. We are glad that Jim Byrnes is returning,” Vogel said of the legendary bluesman. “We hope lots of people come out to this.” Family Days take place at Queen’s Park on Sunday, May 22 (1 to 9 p.m.) and Monday, May 23 (12 to 4 p.m.). Youth create a legacy in art

Focus: Natasha Sharma puts some finishing touches on her mural at Queensborough Middle School. Grade 8 students are taking part in the Youth Art Initiative, creating murals to be hung as public art.

BY JULIE MACLELLAN REPORTER jmaclellan@royalcityrecord.com

Outdoors, it’s just another grey Wednesday. But in here – the multipurpose room at Queensborough Middle School – it’s all about colour. The floor space is filled with four-by-eight-foot panels, spread out over plastic tarps. Students, armed with brushes of varying sizes and plastic pails of vibrantly coloured paint, are hard at work bringing mural scenes to life. These Grade 8 students in Christine Blakeway’s class are part of the Queensborough Youth Art Initiative. The idea first arose about 18 months ago, when members of the

in a four-colour palette – red, orange, green and blue – in exterior latex paint. Ultimately, they’re destined for the fence that borders the pedestrian walkway up to the Queensborough Bridge on its south end. Working on the murals, the students say, has been rewarding. “It’s a good experience,” says Alyssa Bonham, who’s finished her part of the mural and is watching others work. “I like it because it’s something you can’t do every day.” Alyssa does lots of art on her own – “anything that comes to my mind”– she says, but she’s particularly pleased to be part of the mural project. “I’m pretty looking forward to this because I’m proud of it,” she says. She explains the mural she’s part of – a representational view of mountains, with a flower rising above it. “I thought of Queensborough being a happy place,” she says. “The flower represents Queensborough growing

bigger.” Rabiya Sandhu, meanwhile, is studiously painting on a panel representing the sunset, the Olympic inukshuk and the Queensborough Bridge. “It’s fun,” she says, though she admits the work varies from “easy to hard” depending what she’s working on at any given moment. She used to draw a lot, she says, but she hasn’t done as much art for the past few years, and she’s been enjoying getting back into it. One panel away, Natasha Sharma is painting and chatting with her friends as she works. She likes the fact that the students get to work with each other, she says. “Everybody put down their ideas, and the artists decided to toss all our ideas together,” she explains. Her group’s panel is a split scene – one half being the rainy season, the other being the sunshine, with blooming flowers. “It’s the Lower Mainland,” she says with a laugh. On the other side of the room,

Kayla Levandosky has reached the stage of outlining her group’s work in black. Working on the mural has been a rewarding experience, she says. “It’s really cool because it’s a legacy project. It’s going to be up in the community,” she says, noting it’s something that the students can do to give back. “You’re giving back for a very long time. When you’re older, you’ll be like, ‘I did that.’” Egan, watching the students with a smile and offering advice when called upon, says she’s looking forward to seeing the project come to fruition. She’s met with the Ministry of Transportation to work out an agreement for the panels and she’ll be making a delegation with students to city council on May 30. Egan notes that all the costs involved in the project have been covered by donations, fundraising and volunteer work. “It’s pretty amazing to see what you can put together,” she says.

Student wins pizza party for Burn Fund poster AROUND TOWN

THERESA MCMANUS

A

Herbert Spencer student is one of the winners in a B.C. Burn Fund poster contest. Grade 3 student Caleigh Cooledge was one of seven regional winners in the contest. “Every spring the Burn Fund runs a contest for elementary schools during Burn Awareness Week,” said New Westminster firefighter Dave Floris. “It is a tool for kids to learn the danger of burns, hot water and fire, and how to avoid being burned.” The contest is open to all kids in B.C. Awards are given out in seven regions and to a grand-prize winner. Caleigh was one of seven regional winners. “Her prize included a plaque, a framed version of her poster, a plush Dalmatian dog, a pizza party for her class and $500 for the school to spend on something they need,” Floris said in an email to The Record. “Her poster will also be featured on future Burn Awareness Week literature, as well as on the

website.” Floris, who has been New Westminster Fire and Rescue Service’s representative to the Burn Fund for about 10 years, said he’s unaware of a local student winning the contest in the past. For more information about the B.C. Professional Firefighter’s Burn Fund go to www.burnfund.org.

Some Royal City residents learned about bike education and safety at the Massey Heights Family Bike Festival. The recent festival was designed to help kids learn bicycle handling and safety skills, and to help parents learn how to support their young cyclists to ride safely. Part of the Cool Routes to School program, the event was designed to help families to discover the Massey Heights neighbourhood by bicycles. Organized by HASTE B.C., the May 14 festival included bike skills instruction by the Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition, educational tents hosted by New Westminster police, bylaw enforcement and Fraser Health; free bike repair and maintenance by Cap’s Bicycle Shop; free food, beverages and coffee; a festival bike ride through Massey Heights led by trained instructors; and

Summer day camps offered

Urban Academy is hoping to provide some fun ways for kids to enjoy their summer vacation. The private school is offering day camps for kids aged five to 15 at various times in July and August. The full-day and half-day camps will include topics such as Creative Puppetry (five to seven years); Become a Puppeteer (six to 11 years); Music Theatre (five to 12 years); Sensational Summer Science (six to 11 years); Clay Creations (six to 11 years); Fun in French (six to 12 years); Introduction to Photography and Pinhole Cameras; and Drawing and Painting (11 to 16 years). Camps range from $126 to $315 per week. “We’re looking forward to opening our doors for camps this summer,” said Michael Bouchard, Urban Academy’s head of school. “We’ve got something for everyone and it’s a great way for kids to continue to learn and have fun when school’s out.” Full descriptions of all camps and costs are available at http://urbanacad emy.ca.

Enjoying an imperfect life life’s work, train and work hard, finding fulfillment and security for a lifetime. We will marry our soulmate and together raise a happy and healthy family. That of course is the fantasy. The one thing we can predict is that life will be unpredictable. Our planned path will be altered by obstacles, accidents and detours. The destination will change again and again. In fact, our goals may be different in each stage of life and certainly when the circumstances of our lives radically change. When we marry our partners, we promise to support one another in sickness and health, but when we’re both young and healthy, it’s hard to picture what caregiving would be like. Though we plan to help our parents as they age, we cannot imagine the pressures of being sandwiched between the growing needs of our parents

HEALTHWISE

DR. DAVIDICUS WONG

L

ast week, I met with family caregivers during Family Caregivers Week, a celebration of the unsung heroes who look after the needs of friends and family members who, due to age, disability or disease, are unable to look after all of their needs alone. It is a stressful, demanding role that caregivers did not choose and likely never predicted. Though we usually think of our calling in life as something we plan and choose for ourselves, our real lives unfold quite differently. In youth, we have preconceptions and fantasies on how life will turn out. We will choose our

and those of our children. As caregivers we are all human. When stressed, we must cope with conflicting emotions. We have to acknowledge and accept some of those feelings and recognize when we need a break. Caring for loved ones who are no longer at their best emotionally or physically, we have to see the whole person in our arms. When my teens were more challenging to live with, I still saw in them the infants and toddlers I carried and played with. You have to see the present in the context of your loved one’s whole life and in the context of your whole relationship. This is the challenge of unconditional love. Life, though not perfect, is still beautiful and worth living. You and I, though not perfect, are still beautiful and worthy of love. Our losses connect us to others and their losses. Our challenges connect us

to others and their challenges. Together we can accomplish more than we can alone. There is deep meaning in our roles as caregivers. It is an opportunity for growth, maturation and resolution in our relationships. Life is a work of art and a work in progress. Though we do not choose the paints and the canvas, we can still make it beautiful. In our lives that are inextricably intertwined with the lives of friends, families and loved ones, together we weave a rich tapestry of caring. Dr. Davidicus Wong is a physician and writer. Hyacks win high school district track and field title New Westminster Secondary won the combined Burnaby/New Westminster high school district track and field championships at Swangard Stadium last week. The Hyacks garnered 829 points to win the overall aggregate title over Burnaby South by almost 200 points. Burnaby North was a distant third with 461 total points. Glenbrook Middle School placed fifth overall, with its 282.50 total points all amassed in a runaway victory in the bantam division. New Westminster won both the senior and junior divisions handily,

beating runner-up South at the grades 11 and 12 level and North in the Grade 10 age class, respectively. South had a strong showing at the juvenile level, defeating New West by 125 points in the combined scoring. The zone qualifying meet for the B.C. high school track and field championships, including Richmond, Burnaby and New Westminster, takes place today (Wednesday) at the Minoru Oval in Richmond. Qualifying begins at 2 p.m. and runs until 6. Track events are scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m. The B.C. championships will be held at Swangard Stadium on June 3 and 4.

Stony Brook University senior attack Jordan McBride was recently named the America East conference field lacrosse player of the year. McBride scored 41 goals this season, including 19 counters in conference play, to finish his university career with 175 tallies, tying him for 10th overall in NCAA Division I history. McBride is the only player in Stony Brook history to score 40 or more goals in four successive field lacrosse seasons. The New Westminster righthander was also named to the all-conference first team for a fourth consecutive year. Joining McBride on the first all-star team was Royal City neighbour Kevin Crowley, another four-time all-star. The New Westminster pair combined for seven goals between them in an 11-10 upset loss to Harford in the America East championship final on May 7. The untimely loss snapped a 13-game winning streak in conference play for the Seawolves. McBride was named to the America East all-tournament team following the championships. “I could be here for a while talking about this senior class and how they’ve put this program on the map,” said America East coach of the year Rick Sowell in an on-line press release. “The program has reached new heights because of these guys.” Crowley finished his university career at Stony Brook with 30 goals and 26 assists this season. In his four years at Stony Brook, the New Westminster midfielder garnered 131 goals and 101 assists in 60 career games, becoming the first player in school history to record the feat. Crowley is one of just 40 players all-time to register 100 or more goals and assists in Div. I field lacrosse. Crowley was named a LaxPower All-American on May 13.

Boxing coach to be honoured by Italian community

Burnaby boxing legend Manny Sobral will be honoured as the Confratellanza Italo-Canadese Society sports person of 2011 at a gala dinner on June 16. Sobral, well-known in the Burnaby sports community for his tireless work with boxing and mixed martial arts, represented Canada at the 1988 Olympics and helped found the North Burnaby Boxing Club in 2004. The former Canadian amateur champion started in the sport as an overweight 13-year-old who was trying to slim down at the Astoria Boxing Club on Hastings and Main in Vancouver. After successfully losing weight, Sobral’s achievements included three Canadian amateur championships and five gold medals at international competitions while representing Canada. After the Olympics, Sobral started studying at UBC and graduated in 1993 from the Faculty of Education.

In 1993, he returned to the sport he loved. As a professional prize fighter, Sobral held the Canadian super welterweight title from 1996 to ‘98 and the IBO world super welterweight title from 1998 to ‘99. In 1999 he retired from boxing and by 2001, he had completed a master of education degree from San Diego State University. Sobral is currently a high school teacher, boxing trainer and promoter of both boxing and mixed martial arts events. Sobral will receive the Confratellanza’s Angelo E. Branca Sports Trophy on June 16 at the Italian Cultural Centre at 3075 Slocan St. in Vancouver. Dinner tickets are $75 per person, which includes wine. First of the season: The New Westminster Royals proudly show the gold medals they won at a recent squirt C softball tournament in Cloverdale.

Squirt Royals are medal happy The New Westminster Royals softball team is on a tournament roll. The squirt C club medalled for a second time this season, finishing second at a tournament in Richmond last weekend. Earlier, the Royals handed the host teams their first losses in the season en route to the gold medal at a tournament in Cloverdale. Mikaela Cope proved the hero in the championship game in a wild 18-17 victory over the Cloverdale Chaos. Cope slapped a single up the first-base line to bring Theodora Corbeil home from third for the game-winning run.

In the final game and trailing by five runs after six innings, the Royals rallied to tie the contest with eight batters contributing at the plate. In the top of the seventh, Keira Jang retired the first three Chaos batters. In the bottom half of the inning, Corbeil was advanced into scoring position by a Kira Rieger single. Cope then connected on her fourth hit of the game, including a double, to bring home the gold-medal run. The Royals opened with an 8-5 win, handing the previously unbeaten Cloverdale Outlaws their first loss of the season.

Kennedy Kavanagh, Keja Davis, Jordan Ring and Kennedy Sherle contributed six runs in the tournament opener. Jamie Butts and Calli Glover made key pop-fly catches in the game. New Westminster mercied North Delta 15-2 in the second game, helped out by two fine defensive plays by Christina Lemieux at second base. Ring, Jang and Davis all had three hits in an 189 win over the Cloverdale Lunachicks in Game 3. The Royals kept their perfect record at the tourney intact with a 15-1 whalloping over a Vancouver side.

◗ GIRLS’ HOCKEY

New coach takes aim at u-18 hockey nationals BY DAN OLSON REPORTER

editorial@royalcityrecord.com

Big strides and a bigger opportunity. For Port Moody’s Jeff Oldenborger, one is the goal and the other is the current reality. Both are critical parts for B.C.’s team for the 2011 Women’s National Under18 Hockey championships in November. Putting it in motion is Oldenborger’s job as Team B.C.’s head coach. In this weekend’s provincial camp in Salmon Arm, the coaching staff will push and watch a group of more than 50 players competing for roster spots to the national championships. Being able to skate against the eastern powerhouses of Team Ontario and Quebec is the end goal. Ground has been made with a bronze medal in 2005, but B.C. is still battling to earn its first berth into a national final. “We want these 50 players to understand how they are part of the strength of the final roster, that their commitment and passion is what’s going to take B.C. to the next level,” said Oldenborger. Challenging for a medal is one thing, but B.C. will be pushing for gold in the near future. Accepting the role of head coach means mapping out the groundwork for that success. “There’s no question that our big challenge for B.C. female hockey players is getting to where we can compete with the perennial powers – Ontario is strong enough that it sends two teams.” An assistant coach with the University of B.C.’s women’s program, Oldenborger said B.C. has
