TransLink drops plan
Mayor defends city’s action and says residents will get more data and input before city discusses expansion
BY BRENT RICHTER REPORTER brichter@royalcityrecord.com
Residents cheered when TransLink officials announced Thursday that there will be no United Boulevard extension in the foreseeable future. Sany Zein, TransLink’s director of roads, told a crowd of New Westminster residents that TransLink was giving up on the project because there was “no option that currently meets the needs of both the regional road network and local interests.” “We couldn’t find the ‘sweet spot’ or solution that would work,” Zein said. “We’re putting our pencils down on this project.” A crowd of about 70 gathered at the Sapperton Pensioners Hall for the final UBE public meeting and sustained applause for 15 seconds in response to the news. Zein said TransLink will now forward its concluFirst reported @ sions to the RoyalCityRecord.com province and Coquitlam and New Westminster city councils to consider and provide feedback, but TransLink will not be pushing for the project to go forward. Zein said suggestions from the public for alternate routes and traffic configurations for a UBE were greatly appreciated but after consideration and testing by traffic engineers, other configurations only made congestion in the area worse. TransLink spokesman Ken Hardie said the decision came as the result of a public process working as it should. “Our first priority is to really run a process that gives the public and stakeholders an opportunity to add their voices and work with us to see what kind of a solution we can come up with,” Hardie said. “Sometimes no solution is still a solution.” But, Hardie added, no UBE means the current traffic issues in the United Boulevard area are likely only going to get worse as that part of the city develops. “If you look at the region as a whole, it’s growing and there’s more commerce and

The City of New Westminster won’t be making any decisions about a recycling company’s proposed expansion without getting community input and answers about its current operation. Representatives from Harvest Power Inc./Urban Wood Waste Recyclers sought the city’s support for a letter of support for federal funding. Council agreed to provide a letter supporting a funding request that would help the company to expand to its existing construction and demolition waste operation in the Braid industrial area. Council, however, wouldn’t endorse its proposal to expand into recycling of plastics. While that was a part of the company’s proposed first phase of development at the site, council wasn’t comfortable supporting that direction without having detailed information about the environmental consequences. According to Harvest Power, the new state-of-the-art facility would divert construction and demolition waste from the landfills and would help the region reach its waste diversion goals. The U.S.-based company would contribute $10.5 million toward the project and hopes the Green Infrastructure Fund would contribute $5.5 million. Mayor Wayne Wright said council’s action was to provide a letter that would help the company in its bid for federal funding, nothing more. He said no decision has been made about supporting an expansion at the business. “What we did at that meeting was not to give them carte blanche to do whatever they want,” he said. Wright said the grant would enable

PAT EMMERSON LOVES HER NEIGHBOURHOOD FOR THE PEOPLE AND THE PACE
The ‘Boro: Finding a whole new world BY ASHLEY OWENS REPORTER editorial@royalcityrecord.com
Queensborough has become so much more than just a place to call home for 66year-old Pat Emmerson, who said she is overjoyed she made the decision to move to the community 12 years ago. “It was so nice and tranquil and really quiet,” she said. “It was near everything and yet it was far enough away that you felt you were in a whole new world.” Emmerson made the move with her husband and son, after walking along the New Westminster Quay and noticing some interesting houses in the distance. A search for these homes led them to Queensborough, a community that she said she will stay in forever. “You can walk on the sidewalk anytime and there’s always someone that’ll say hi to you. It sort of reminds me of the old times when everybody knew everybody.” And this friendly community has something that nowhere else can offer Emmerson – memories of her husbands final years. “He could sit outside and just watch the river, which he loved to do,” she recalled. He passed away in 2009, prompting Pat to get involved with the community. She discovered the Queensborough Community Centre – a place she dedicates five or six hours per week to. “You feel so welcomed and as if it’s ◗Queensborough Page 4

the company to take steps to improve its local operation. City administrator Paul Daminato said the company would be required to meet all zoning and regulatory requirements before any expansion could proceed on Spruce Street. Since Monday’s presentation, some residents have raised concerns about the company’s current operation. Part of that concern was prompted by Richard Babcock, general manager and vice president of business development for Harvest Power Inc./ Urban Wood Waste Recyclers Ltd., acknowledging that the company has been operating under a Pollution Prevention Order. Keith Coueffin, the city’s manager of licenses and integrated services, said Metro Vancouver issued the company a Pollution Prevention Order in 2010 requiring the company to make some improvements to control dust from the site. He said the dust concerns were primarily due to a conveyer system that was being used to take material from the building where products were processed to barges on the waterfront.
Coueffin said Metro Vancouver officials told him that the company has been “very cooperative” since that order was issued and has made substantial investments to correct the problem and bring the operation into compliance. He said the company has completed most of the requirements and is working on the final dust-control measures. New Westminster resident Christopher Bell has questioned whether the company is complying with zoning, which requires recycling operations and storage to be conducted within a fully enclosed building. Coueffin said Urban Wood Waste Recyclers has been in operation since 2002, at which time it applied for a business licence and all required licences from the Greater Vancouver Sewerage and Drainage District (now Metro Vancouver) to operate a construction waste recycling facility. According to Coueffin, all of the business’s grinding and sorting operations are done inside. The city permitted the company to use its yard for receiving goods that were to be recycled, so the city believes the company is complying with its bylaws.
Coueffin said Harvest Power recently purchased Urban Wood Waste Recyclers Ltd. Because business licenses are not transferable, he said the new owner is submitting a new business license application to obtain a license for the current operation. As part of the processing of the business license application, Coueffin said city staff would conduct inspections of the site and review the operation to ensure the business complies with all city regulations. Harvest Power is proposing a $16 million facility to reclaim, reuse and recycle construction and demolition waste, and to recover waste plastics and convert them into crude oil. The company noted that one of the challenges in processing construction and demolition waste is dealing with plastics that are frequently too dirty to get recycled and therefore go to landfills, so the proposed plastics recycling operation would convert those plastics to 4,500 gallons of ultra-sweet crude oil a day. “Biofuel could be used in a combined heat and power plant to be built on the premises,” said the company’s fact sheet. “It would provide district heating to the adja-
cent Royal Columbian Hospital and other nearby users while the electricity will be fed to the city’s utility to increase the amount of renewable energy in the regional grid.” Sapperton residents have voiced concerns in the past about having an incinerator in their neighbourhood. “It’s no slippery slope,” Wright said about some residents’ fears that council’s support for the grant application means it will support an incinerator. “We haven’t started to do the study on it. Before they ever got to that, we would have to go to the community.” Wright said city staff would provide analysis on issues such as truck traffic and emissions before anything is approved for the site. “We don’t want to frighten constituents with what is not going to happen,” he said. “We are not there yet. We are in control of that. Nothing will happen until we have a say.” Although an incinerator isn’t planned in the first phase of the project at the New Westminster site, a Harvest report indicates it’s being considered for the future.

Man found dead was a New West resident Autopsy did not determine cause of death, police say
BY JANAYA FULLER-EVANS AND BRENT RICHTER REPORTERS brichter@royalcityrecord.com
New Westminster police have identified the man found dead in Queensborough early Wednesday morning as New West resident Brian Johansen. An autopsy performed on Thursday did not determine the cause of death, according to a press release from the police department. Const. Bruce Carrie said the body was removed from the scene around 10:15 a.m.
on Wednesday. New Westminster’s major crimes unit was called to the scene around 4 a.m. Wednesday, when someone spotted the body in the middle of South Dyke Road at Jardine Street. Carrie said there was no obvious cause of death after an initial investigation of the scene, and that it is too early in the investigation to determine if foul play is involved. Police are asking that anyone who knows of Johansen’s activities prior to his death in the early morning hours of May 18 contact the department. www.twitter.com/BrentRichter www.twitter.com/janayafe

home there,” she said. “It really is a second home at the rec centre.” The centre provided Emmerson with an outlet. Being alone was new to her, and she wanted to find a pastime that she could fill her days with. “Had I not started at the rec centre I think I would have just sat at home and done nothing,” she said. “But having the centre there and having everyone else there – it really helped me to heal.” One of the events put on by the centre is the annual Queensborough Day festival, which Emmerson participates in. She looks after the special programs station at the event, which will take place on May 29. It is co-sponsored by the Queensborough Special Programs Committee and New Westminster parks, culture and recreation. It’s set to run from noon
until 4 p.m. Emmerson is among the many volunteers that work together to make the festival special. This year’s theme is “get connected with your community,” encouraging Queensborough residents to come together. Attendees can visit new local group Artists in the Boro’s booth, where people can view works of art, including sculptures and painting by local artists. People can also get
gardening tips from the Port Royal Community Garden or participate in the bike rodeo put on by the New Westminster Police Services. Baked goods and coffee will also be available, along with a variety of ethnic foods ranging from Mexican to East Indian choices. “It seems like you spend so much time organizing it and setting up for it and then – poof, it’s over,” Emmerson said.

River water high – but no flooding predicted BY THERESA MCMANUS REPORTER tmcmanus@royalcityrecord.com
The City of New Westminster is monitoring water levels on the Fraser River but isn’t overly worried about the prospect of flooding. Dave Jones, the city’s manager of emergency management, said there are no flood risks in New Westminster at this time, but city staff is meeting regularly for updates. “In order to have a high water event you have to have a perfect storm to some degree,” he said. “A lot of things are out of our control.” Jones said the city does regular inspections of the dykes in the city as part of its routine maintenance. “Right now we are good,” he said.
According to the city’s website, the flood risk on the Fraser River is moderate, given that the snowpack for this time of year is above normal in the upper watershed. “However, actual flows in the lower Fraser River are determined by weather conditions – the next three to four weeks is the most critical period, as an extended period of hot weather in combination with heavy precipitation in the upper watershed could increase flood risk,” said the May 20 update. “However, if normal weather conditions prevail, the risk of very high flows in the lower Fraser is limited.” The city’s emergency management office is continuing to monitor the situation and to liaise with provincial and federal government officials.

ately appointed to the $132,300 per year Senate posting. Talk about double-dipping. Some pundits have suggested that Harper appointed the defeated Tories to incite the call for reform again, and to get the provinces involved. If he did, there’s certainly easier and less destructive ways of moving reform forward. We understand that all parties have used the Senate to reward members and as a guaranteed backup for government policies – but few seem to have used it
so quickly or so nakedly for their own interest as the Tories. The Senate has an opportunity to be a force for a judicious, sober second look at legislation – but if it is just a parking place for patronage, then it will continue to be a target for derision and jokes. If the government is serious about reform, it needs to ask the provinces to get Senators on the ballot for the next election. And it needs to lead the movement, not exploit the system for its own benefit.
Parties at par in B.C. – for now IN THE HOUSE KEITH BALDREY
W
e finally have a sample of public opinion for the first time since both major provincial parties changed leaders, and each of them can take a lot of positives from the findings. The poll by Ipsos-Reid showed the B.C. Liberals slightly ahead of the NDP, at 41 per cent to 39 per cent. But given the margin of error of 2.9 per cent, what we have right now is basically a dead heat. Considering where the B.C. Liberals stood with the public just a few months ago, the party’s comeback is significant. The poll’s findings show that a political party can recover with a change at the top. But New Democrats, too, can take heart that the party is on even competitive footing with their chief rivals. However, the NDP must be particularly pleased with the poll’s finding that support for the B.C. Conservative Party is now pegged at 10 per cent in the polls. As I’ve noted in this space in the past, if the B.C. Conservatives – or any other centre-right party – can start
tracking in double digits when it comes to voter support, they become a serious threat to the B.C. Liberals’ continued hold on power. While the B.C. Conservatives can eat into some NDP support in the Interior or the North, they take more votes away from the B.C. Liberals than other parties. The Ipsos poll results are, in fact, almost a mirror image of the results of the 1996 provincial election, when the NDP had fewer votes than the B.C Liberals but took power because it won more seats. The NDP victory occurred because the old Reform Party took almost 10 per cent of the vote and the old Progressive Democratic Alliance took more than five per cent. Most of the votes would have otherwise gone the B.C. Liberals’ way. Is the stage being set for a similar occurrence come the next election, which may be as early as September? It’s a distinct possibility, but there are a couple of other factors to weigh here. First of all, was the relatively strong showing of the B.C. Conservatives (the poll gives the party an eight point climb in support) partially a carry-over from the federal election, which was held just a week before Ipsos began polling voters? And second, can the party hang on to that level of support or will it drop if enough of its supporters begin to realize a ◗Polls Page 7
Make plant obey all the rules
Dear Editor:
Who knew that you could operate a rule breaking dusty and dirty construction and demolition waste recycling plant that’s operating without a valid business licence and still get City Of New Westminster mayor and council’s unanimous support for a huge expansion of your operation. This is good governance? I find the news that Harvest Power Inc. (through its subsidiary Urban Wood Waste Recyclers) plans to expand its Sapperton-based waste recycling operation very concerning, as it appears the present operation has been contravening city and Metro Vancouver bylaws for quite some time. The City Of New Westminster’s M-2 heavy industrial zone (in which this recycling operation resides) allows for a recycling plant if: ◗ 720.23 Recycling provided that all operations and
storage are conducted only within a fully enclosed building. A company photo of the recycling plant’s recycling operation clearly shows it is not conducting operations and storage within a fully enclosed building. Large piles of waste materials and the grinding operation are not enclosed within a building, which has led to excess dust issues, years of complaints from the plant’s neighbours and a Pollution Prevention Order issued by MetroVancouver. I visited the site and was horrified with the noise, smell, massive piles of open debris, a gargantuan, howling and screaming out-in-the-open Caterpillar waste grinding machine belching dust, and an allenveloping moist cloud of dust blowing over the surrounding businesses and neighbourhoods. The neighbouring businesses are tired and fed up with noise and miserable air quality. ◗Recyclers Page 7

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Recyclers rile resident ◗ continued from page 6
One of the local property owners states the situation is worse than ever, even with water cannons (a consultant’s solution to the dust problem) blowing vast quantities of water vapour into the air, which picks up the airborne dust and then blows downwind and clogs and coats everything – car exteriors, businesses’ air conditioning unit filters, office interiors, Handy Dart bus interiors, machine shop interiors, forklift radiators. The local business perception is that Urban Wood Waste Recyclers are getting a free ride despite the neighbours’ years of complaints. It’s clear that the significant step of Metro Vancouver issuing a Pollution Prevention Order (to prevent excess levels of dust blowing off-site) would not have been necessary if the recycling operation was conforming to city zoning bylaws by having all of its operations and storage piles within fully enclosed buildings. A senior City of New Westminster official informed me that the Urban Wood Waste Recyclers operation has been operating (since September 2010) without a valid business licence. Who knew that you could operate a rule-breaking dusty and dirty construction and demolition waste recycling operation without a valid business license and still get unanimous mayor and council support for a vastly expanded operation. Wow, if we all could be so lucky in our dealings with the city. Local businesses suffer while an American company’s profits flow south. It’s not Wright.
The City of New Westminster needs to suspend Urban Wood Waste Recyclers’ rule-breaking, dusty and dirty operations until they can be brought into compliance with city bylaws and Metro Vancouver Pollution Prevention Order requirements. A tall order. Christopher Bell, New Westminster
Bigger is not always better when it comes to bridge Dear Editor:
Re: Mayor backs billion-dollar bridge, The Record, May 20. The Pattullo Bridge is not doing the job? Are you kidding me? Most planners know that if you widen a corridor it will only allow for more traffic. New West is a city that is blessed and plagued by its central location. It is also blessed by being a true community of neighbourhoods. A larger bridge with more traffic will negatively impact that. One solution to the inconvenience that commuters experience is to ban the truck use of the bridge during rush hour. This is done in many cities in the world. It will reduce congestion considerably and ease the burden on commuters who know nothing about what New West means to us. Simply put, Mayor Wright, when it comes to New West, bigger is not better. As for tolling the bridge; for those who work in Surrey it is a prohibitive cost. Many cities do it, but the tolls are far cheaper and charged one way. Warren Fox, New Westminster

Polls: NDP, Liberals in a dead heat ◗ continued from page 6
splitting of the centreright vote elects the leftwing NDP, a scenario that presumably would frighten a large number of Conservatives? A troubling sign for the B.C. Conservatives was the inane comments of their leader John Cummins, who told a Victoria radio show that he thinks people “choose” to be gay or straight. His comments reinforced the old stereotype of wacko right-wing politicians who can never attract support from beyond the fringes of the public. If he keeps making comments like those, his party will sink back to marginal status. Another key finding of the poll should put big
smiles on the faces of B.C. Liberals. When asked who would make the best premier, voters chose Premier Christy Clark by a wide margin over the NDP’s Adrian Dix. She bested him by a margin of 47 per cent to just 25 per cent. Dix’s low score is no doubt partially related to his relative anonymity compared to Clark. He will undoubtedly fare better on that question as he becomes better known. However, B.C. Liberals have to be pleased their leader is now more popular than the party or the government (which is still largely viewed quite negatively). Clark is a demonstrable asset to the party, in stark contrast to the situation with her
predecessor, who seemed more of a drag than a boon on his party’s fortunes. Our political system is dominated by our leaders, which makes the question of who will make the best premier such an important one. As long as Clark can put up such high numbers on that question, her chances for success when she calls the next vote are significantly enhanced. But hey, this is just one poll, one snapshot of a lively political scene. There will be plenty more to come before the next election, but the results of this poll make one thing clear: the race is very much on. Keith Baldrey is chief political correspondent for Global B.C.

United Boulevard: Debate must be done in larger context, says mayor ◗ continued from page 1
things being shipped by truck. We have the industrial park in New West and United Boulevard and all the destinations on there. As the traffic grows, so will the congestion and all the other issues the UBE was intended to resolve,” Hardie said. “TransLink wanted to make the road network better and if this result stands, that won’t happen.” The decision takes the possibility of a North Fraser Perimeter Road off the table as TransLink has stated that a United Boulevard extension would have to be the first step in such a project. TransLink’s Mayors’ Council had already removed a North Fraser Perimeter Road from TransLink’s financial plan, but Hardie said approving the United
Boulevard extension could have set the stage for reviving the longsought city bypass. The decision also means the $65 million that Transport Canada was willing to kick in for the $155million project will now likely be reallocated for other transportation improvements in B.C. or Alberta. Also gone are several community amenities and mitigations that were to be included with the extension, including a pedestrian and cycling overpass leading to the industrial park, improved intersections along Columbia Street, traffic calming measures and more green space beautification in Sapperton. Hardie said those amenities could be considered again if there is a desire from New Westminster
city council, but it would require starting the process again. Despite the cheers and sense of relief from attendees at Thursday’s meeting, some in the crowd are treating the news as a hollow victory and expressed many lingering concerns. James Crosty pointed to the recent revelation that TransLink is committed to replacing the aging Patullo Bridge with, potentially, a $1-billion, six-lane bridge. He said moving ahead with that without consideration as to how that will affect the rest of the city would be a big mistake. “I feel like we’ve had some good dialogue,” he said. “Don’t desert us from this perspective. I’d like to see the dialogue continue.” Hardie said there has been no
decision on how many lanes the bridge will have, and planning for the bridge will involve another rigorous public process. Mayor Wayne Wright said the United Boulevard extension was filled with problems and debating over it is fruitless if it is not done in a larger context, including the Patullo Bridge and North Fraser Perimeter Road. He said he totally disagrees with TransLink’s position that the United Boulevard extension would have to be a keystone for a larger project. “There’s no support for the UBE until we have a complete plan. Now that we’ve got the Patullo Bridge on the board, it will determine how everything else evolves because it will be one of the main pieces of the entire
puzzle. UBE takes care of one little part of the city that’s not very much affected. Everyone will be affected by the Patullo,” he said. “Someday (TransLink) will wake up and see that they have to have the entire plan or it doesn’t work.” He described the United Boulevard decision as another step the city must go through towards achieving that “entire plan.” “Now that they’ve made a decision about the Patullo Bridge, now they can do some real work as to how this is going to be accomplished. “We’re going to be right at the table with them and making sure it’s being done for the benefit of everyone.” www.twitter.com/BrentRichter

dramatic presentation about the Gospel of Mark will help raise funds for a local program helping address homelessness. The Testament of a Naked Man will be presented at Sapperton Square at Knox Presbyterian Church on East Columbia Street on Saturday, May 28 at 3:30 p.m. Testament of a Naked Man is a oneman dramatic interpretation of the Gospel of Mark presented by Angus Stuart, a priest with the Anglican Church of Canada. “Through this presentation, the audience will be transported back in time to be with Jesus on the dusty roads of Palestine and on the shores of the Sea of Galilee,” said a press release about the presentation. “If you’ve heard the stories before you will hear them in a whole new way; but if you’re not familiar with them you will be hearing them like the first listeners almost 2,000 years ago. The Gospel of Mark is the earliest of the written gospels in today’s Bibles. It is also the simplest: there is no birth story, and the ending leaves the reader wondering what happened. It is just the story of Jesus, what he did and what he said.” Proceeds from this event will be divided between the Homeless Coalition’s I’s on the Street program in New Westminster and the healing and reconciliation work of the Rev. Emilie Smith at Peace House in Santa Cruz del Quiche, Guatemala. The I’s on the Street program identifies homeless people and gives them a block of New Westminster to keep clean for two three-hour shifts per week. In addition to being paid minimum wage, the program gives these people the opportunity to develop self-esteem and the sense that they are part of the community.

Run for Water
Urban Academy students raised more than $4,400 to help a HOPE International Development Agency program in Africa. The money raised is enough to provide clean water to 125 people in the district of Bonke in Ethiopia. The students raised the money through their participation in Run for Water, an annual fundraising run organized by HOPE International Development Agency. “We’re so proud of the hard work the students put into raising funds,” said Michael Bouchard,
Urban Academy’s head of school. “It was great to see them so enthusiastic about giving to others, and we know that their generosity will carry through to other areas of their lives.” While students normally participate in another charitable fundraiser that rewards students with prizes for collecting pledges, school staff thought this was a good opportunity to teach about the value of giving for the sake of giving – without prizes as an incentive. “We wanted our students to realize that true charity means not expecting compensation in return,” Bouchard said. “And judging from the students’ commitment and excitement, they didn’t need to be taught that lesson.” A group of students and teachers delivered the donation to HOPE
International Development Agency’s Sixth Street office.

Queensborough Day is introducing a new green feature to this year’s celebration. The event, which takes place on Sunday, May 29 from noon to 4 p.m. at the Queensborough Community Centre, includes entertainment, displays and food. “We are purchasing all the recyclable plates and cups for our vendors,” said Renee Chadwick, manager of Queensborough Community Centre. “We want people to understand there are other methods of doing a special event. May Day continues to hold fond memories for one of New Westminster’s native daughters. Emily Crawford (née Andrews) cherishes the many years she spent attending May Day ceremonies at Queen’s Park. “I never missed a May Day,” she said of her childhood. “I got a new dress and new patent shoes. We weren’t well off, but May Day was a big deal in those days.” When Crawford was a youngster, boys and girls had to be dressed in their best attire for May Day. “They used to make us paper hats out of tissue paper,” she recalled. “They were cute.” Crawford always looked forward to May Day and hoped it wouldn’t be postponed because of poor weather. “We hoped the shot would go off,” she said about the sound that signalled May Day was on. “If it was raining, we hoped to God they didn’t cancel it.” Crawford, 89, cherishes a photo of her and her nephew/May Day dance partner George Openshaw attending May Day when she was about 12 years of age. Like today, the celebration took place

◗ CITY HALL
N.W.M.H.A.
Help offered for owners of heritage homes Registration 2011/12 Season New Westminster Minor Hockey Association P.O. Box 456 New Westminster, B.C. V3L 4Y8
BY THERESA MCMANUS REPORTER tmcmanus@royalcityrecord.com
A workshop is being planned for residents who live in homes that are listed on the city’s heritage register. Homes listed on the heritage register aren’t legally protected, but their inclusion on the register indicates that they have heritage value or character. A June 4 workshop at city hall will cover topics such as researching a heritage home, painting a heritage house, uncovering original siding and shingles (and what to do if hazardous materials are found), discovering how a heritage house has evolved over time, the do’s and don’ts of additions to heritage houses, determining the original colour scheme of the home and restoring heritage wood windows. “The afternoon will provide a great deal of information and tips from professionals who are knowledgeable and experienced in the care of heritage homes,” states a staff report. “The presence of heritage-related community groups will round out the afternoon and provide participants with local and provincial resources that they can
access. The New Westminster Museum and Archives will have a small display on how to research one’s heritage house that will tie in with the session they are offering.” Julie Schueck, the city’s heritage planner, was impressed with the response she got from professionals and community groups who were asked if they’d be willing to do free presentations. The workshop will be free to people whose homes are on the heritage register. “They all jumped on it,” she said. “They were so happy to do it, so excited to do it. It was a really, really impressive response from these companies and individuals.” According to Schueck, the idea came out of comments made at various open houses. She said the city wanted to find a way of giving back to individuals who have put their homes on the heritage register. “Part of the reason for doing it is to get people interested in the heritage register and partly to give back to the people who are already on it,” she said. “It’s a really great informational thing.” www.twitter.com/TheresaMcManus

ebration. “My little great-granddaughter is in it now. She’ll be looking forward to that,” she said. “My children were all in it. My son used to hate it. He hated dressing up – but he went anyway.” New Westminster will crown its 141st May Queen
on May Day, which is being celebrated today in Queen’s Park. The city’s May Day has been held every year since 1870, making it the longest running May Day celebration in the British Commonwealth. www.twitter.com/ TheresaMcManus

This is the singers’ 44th annual show and also marks a decade of musical leadership by their music director, Wilson Fowlie. Fowlie notes that music has an incredibly positive effect on people. “Singing physically makes you feel good; singing for others makes
you feel great,” he said. “Our audiences clearly enjoy it; we see the smiles, the toe tapping, people singing along. It’s a win-win situation.” As a registered charity, the choir’s goal is to bring music to as many people as possible. The group performs 12 to 15 shows throughout the year – at fundraisers, seniors’ homes, community centres, churches and special events. The annual spring show helps to cover their costs. Tickets are available from the Massey box office at 604-521-5050 or tickets.masseytheatre.com. Admission is $20 or $18 for students and seniors. Check out more at www.mapleleaf-singers.com.

Senior ’Bellies draw with Nanaimo in WLA season opener BY TOM BERRIDGE SPORTS EDITOR tberridge@royalcityrecord.com
The senior A New Westminster Salmonbellies fought to a wild and wolly draw with Nanaimo in their Western Lacrosse Association season opener. The Salmonbellies drew 14-14 in overtime with the Timbermen at Frank Crane Arena Sunday. It was the first point for both clubs. New Westminster held an 8-5 advantage after a wide open opening 20 minutes of play. But with six Salmonbellie starters away at the world indoor lacrosse championshipsintheCzechRepublic, including both goalies Tyler Richards with Canada and Matt Roik with England, New Westminster succumbed to Nanaimo’s big three. Scott Ranger, Lewis Ratcliff and Joel Henry accounted for all but two of the 14 goals for the Nanaimo club. Ranger potted six goals and 12 points to earn the game’s first star. Ratcliff and Henry both added hat tricks in multi-point efforts. “They’re good players, but like I said before there is a pretty fine line to winning and losing in this league. But we have to do a better job in stopping them,” said Salmonbellies head coach Ken Thomas. Third star Ilija Gajic replied with three goals in a five-point effort for the ’Bellies. Tyler Crompton added four points, including New Westminster’s only goal in the overtime.

◗ TRACK AND FIELD
Hyacks qualify in a dozen events for B.C. champs Damanpreet Rai and Gabby Napoleone carry a lot of New Westminster’s expectations on their shoulders leading up the B.C. high school track and field championships. The two New Westminster Secondary School students both qualified in four separate events at last week’s qualifying zone meet in Richmond. Rai made the standard in the girls’ 100-metre hurdles and 200m, as well as the long and triple jumps. Rai qualified behind New Westminster teammate Natasha Lazecki in the hurdles. The two had virtually identical numbers in qualifying for the triple jump. Napoleone will challenge at the middle and long distance events from the 800m to 3,000m, and the 1,500m steeplechase also. New Westminster will also contest the girls’ 4x400m relay. Also qualifying for the Hyack girls’ is Hannah Dixon in the javelin and high jumper Manisha Kandola, who last year finished in a tie for sixth with a leap of 1.55m. The lone male qualifier for the Hyacks is Jaimie Wandell in the shot put. St. Thomas More Collegiate should be a threat to medal in a number of boys’ events. The Knights sprint relay team of Mikey
Carney, Giovanni Trasolini, Sebastian Adugalski and Marwin Empainado qualified in the 4x100m in a fast time of 43.9. STM also qualified a B team through the open zones, as well as in the 4x400m relay. The Knight girls also qualified as team in both the 400 and 1,600m relays. Trasolini qualified in the 200m in a very fast 22.4 seconds. He will also run at 400m. Adulgalski will compete in the individual 110 and 400m hurdle events, as well as in the long jump. Carney, Daniella Falcone and Paige Llewellyn will race at 100m. Rachel Shuttleworth earned an open zone berth into the 200m. Luca Molinari qualified for three field events, including the shot put, discus and hammer throw. Andrew Wu, in the hurdles, and Brian Doe, in the racewalk, will also compete for the STM boys. Pam Ho earned a spot in the girls’ long jump and high jump. Ho placed eighth last year in the high jump with a 1.55m jump. Kamila Wojciechowski and Jeryna Gbardy made it into the shot put. The B.C. high school track and field championships will be held at Swangard Stadium on June 3 and 4. The multi-events finals will be held in Abbotsford this weekend.
Quesnel relocates to Chilliwack

Simon Fraser University was eliminated from its final NAIA women’s softball national championship. The defending small college champs finished pool play with a 2-1 record following a 3-2 loss to the Simpson University Redhawks on March 21. The loss left the Clan tied witih Simpson and Lubbuck Christian, which held the tiebreak advantage in run differential and advanced to the double elimination championship round. “Statistically, I felt we were the better team, but it’s about the timing of hits, and if you leave that many players on bases, it hurts you in the end,” said SFU head coach Mike Renney in a press release. “But I think getting to the national cham-
U-19 lax coach
pionships and defeating two top-15 teams in the round robin exceeded everybody’s expectations.” SFU opened the nationals with a 10-2 win over Reinhardt University. Leah Riske led off a five-run sixth inning with a solo home run to erase a 1-0 deficit. Cara Lukawesky went the distance for the Clan, allowing just four hits. The following day, SFU knocked off Lubbock Christian University of Texas 4-3. The Clan again began a rally in the sixth on Brittany Mayer’s twoout single. Rosie Murphy smacked a double to bring in a pair of runs to give SFU a 3-1 lead. Lukawesky gave up seven hits in seven innings to pick up her second straight win. But SFU failed to generate the
same magic on the crucial third day of pool elimination play. The Clan left the bases loaded in the top of the first inning against Simpson. SFU tied the contest 2-2 in the sixth inning on pinch hitter Sammie Olexa’s single that scored Lauren Mew and Murphy. The Clan had a second chance in the inning to score the go-ahead runs, but left the bases loaded on a ground out. Simpson scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh on a shallow single to left-centre by Nichole Hutchins. Lukaweksy took the loss. The Clan finished with a 4-3 alltime record in the NAIA national championship finals. SFU will play next season in the NCAA Division 11 Great Northwest Athletic Conference.
Matt Brown was named the offensive coordinator for Canada’s under-19 men’s field lacrosse team for the upcoming 2012 world championships in Finland.

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
