The City of Coquitlam wants the provincial government to ensure that the region doesn’t miss out on $65 million in federal funding promised for the United Boulevard extension.

TransLink announced last week that it was giving up on the project because it had limited support in New Westminster. Residents attending TransLink’s meeting were thrilled with the news. In a May 24 letter to the province’s minister of transportation and infrastructure, Coquitlam mayor Richard Stewart has appealed for assistance to ensure that federal funding needed to address “this longstanding bottleneck” isn’t lost. He stated that Coquitlam has a preferred technical option, but remains flexible in accepting a solution that improves the current level

railway crossing and single-lane Bailey Bridge. “At this time there appears to be an impasse that can only be resolved by the province, acting in the interests of British Columbia as a whole,” he wrote. “We appeal and urge you to take all necessary steps to protect the interests of B.C. in this matter and we remain committed to working cooperatively with all parties to ensure that this project is initiated and completed.” The Significant Project Streamlining Act adopted by the province in 2003, is legisla-

tion that allows the provincial government to overrule local government bylaws. “I was surprised and disappointed,” said Coun. Jonathan Cote about Coquitlam’s response, given that TransLink only made its recommendation after going through a consultation process and concluding that all of the city’s objectives couldn’t be met. He said Coquitlam’s letter basically wants the province to bypass New Westminster’s concerns and allow the project to proceed regardless of those concerns. Mayor Wayne Wright said New ◗UBE Page 4

New Westminster MLA Dawn Black is worried that surgical waiting lists will grow at Royal Columbian this summer. Black recently voiced concern in the provincial Legislature about the need to expand Royal Columbian Hospital. In a follow-up press release, she raised concerns about a number of other issues including a lack of cleanliness in hospitals and an “urgent” concern around surgical waiting lists at Royal Columbian Hospital this summer. “Potentially thousands of surgeries could be postponed when there’s already a backlog, particularly in the orthopedic category,” she said. “When people are waiting for a long time for their surgery, the idea of thousands being cancelled is pretty hair-raising.” Black is questioning why locums are not being hired to replace anesthetists who are away. David Plug, director of public affairs for Fraser Health, said the health region recruits as much as possible when there are vacations, including locums. “It is a very challenging recruiting environment,” he said about hiring anesthesiologists. “We think we have a lot to offer.” Plug said Fraser Health has more than 100 anesthesiologists with privileges to work at its hospitals across the region, which is 14 more than it had in January 2008. “We are hoping to get back up to a full complement of anesthesiologists in the fall,” he said. “This summer may be a bit tighter than previous years.” Plug said there are about 13 applicants working temporarily or being reviewed by their anesthesiologist peers. “High-volume surgical sites like RCH, which yearly performs more than 13,000 procedures just in day-surgeries, are particularly attractive for anesthesiologists,” he said in a follow-up email to The Record. Plug said it’s normal for hospitals to have a “slowdown period” for surgeries in the summer.

Community celebration: Thousands of people came out for the 2011 Hyack International Parade on Saturday, May 28 in New Westminster. This year marked the 40th anniversary for the parade. The event draws people from all over B.C. and some from the U.S. It is the Lower Mainland’s largest parade and features ﬂoats, marching bands, local clubs and non-proﬁt groups.

New Westminster’s two members of Parliament have found roles in the NDP shadow cabinet. Burnaby New Westminster MP Peter Julian was named as the party’s industry critic. “I am honoured to take my place on the front bench of the NDP team as we begin our new role as official Opposition in the House of Commons,” Julian said in a press release. “To be named to the shadow cabinet as well as the inner shadow cabinet is a great privilege.” Julian was also named deputy national caucus chair and has been appointed to the NDP’s priority and planning committee, which mirrors the federal cabinet’s inner structure. New Westminster-Coquitlam MP Fin Donnelly will resume his role as the critic for fisheries and oceans. “It is an honour to serve as fisheries and oceans critic for Canada’s official

Opposition,” he said in a press release. “There are many challenges facing our coasts and coastal communities. I plan on working hard to address these issues by advocating for sustainable fisheries policies and promoting stewardship of our ocean and fresh water resources.” While serving as the NDP’s fisheries and oceans critic in the previous Parliament, Donnelly tabled legislation to transition from open-net fish farms to closed containment, and to ban oil supertanker traffic off the North Coast of British Columbia. He also raised concerns about the need to protect critical orca habitat and the risks of genetically modified salmon. “It’s time for the Conservative government to take action and protect our marine ecosystems and the livelihoods of Canadians that depend on our fisheries,” he said. “I feel a great responsibility to ensure that the voices of all stakeholders are heard and will do my best to provide strong representation in Parliament while holding the government to account.”

Westminster has always said it would only support the United Boulevard extension if mitigation measures were done along the full North Fraser Perimeter Road corridor in New Westminster. The United Boulevard extension is one component of the transportation corridor that would stretch from the Queensborough Bridge to United Boulevard in New Westminster. “We have to show them why the City of New Westminster could not accept something like this without making sure our transportation needs are taken care of,” Wright said. With more than 450,000 vehicles travelling in the city each day, Wright said the city wasn’t prepared to support the United Boulevard extension unless it was done well and properly. City council also received a staff report about TransLink’s recent United Boulevard extension public consultation process at Monday’s meeting.

“TransLink indicated that they will now advise Transport Canada that no supportable solution for the UBE can be found and they cannot utilize the federal grant of $65 million,” said the staff report. “Furthermore, TransLink advised that their current financial plan does not include specific funding for their share of UBE or the rest of the NFPR.” Council approved a motion to endorse TransLink’s decision to abandon the project. In response to the letter from Coquitlam to the province, city council also agreed to write to the province outlining New Westminster’s concerns and the issues about the project. Cote said the letter from the City of Coquitlam provided a “one-sided view” on the topic and didn’t identify New Westminster’s concerns. “New Westminster already has capacity issues,” he said about increasing traffic in the city. tmcmanus@royalcityrecord.com

that she had to continually push hospital cleaning staff to clean her room, which had overflowing garbage bins. “What kind of studies were done to think the privatization of cleaning services was a positive

idea,” she said. “What kind of monitoring is ongoing now to try to bring back a standard of cleanliness in the hospital that both patients and medical staff would fee more comfortable with.”

how much government compensation might be coming to stave off personal disaster. Those of us who live along the Fraser River need to be aware of the mixed blessings that the waterway offers. The old-timers who remember 1948 really aren’t that old. And the impressive results of the even greater flood of 1896 are awesome where they still are evident – for instance, the displacement of a mile of McMillan Island near Chilliwack, shift-

ing the main course of the Fraser to the Maple Ridge side of the river and narrowing the Bedford Channel on the Langley side to a relative trickle. That’s the power of unchecked snow melt cascading down from the Interior. It’s what’s wreaking havoc in Manitoba and Alabama, as it has in our own province, at Prince George. Perhaps we ought to be thankful for our unseasonably cool spring. And even more thankful that nobody has to be doing anything about it.

A ‘report card’ for Premier Clark IN THE HOUSE KEITH BALDREY

oon after Christy Clark was sworn in as premier, I offered her some advice in this column about changing some policies that proved controversial under her predecessor. I don’t believe for a moment that any premier follows my advice, of course, but I thought it might be interesting to see if Clark has agreed with any part of my “top 10” list and grade her accordingly: ◗ 1. Raise the minimum wage. Well, this was one of her first decisions soon after taking office and the first indication she was prepared to do things differently than Gordon Campbell. Grade: A ◗ 2. Review the province’s energy policy and B.C. Hydro’s proposed massive rate hikes. She has ordered a review of those rate hikes, but that’s the extent of any action on the energy file. Still, if a review means lower rate hikes that will be a good thing. Grade: C+ ◗ 3. Review the legal bills arising from the B.C. Rail trial of two former political aides. She’s met this one halfway by naming University of B.C. president Stanley Toope to review the pol-

icy of paying legal bills of civil servants. Grade: C+ ◗ 4. Repair the relationship with Children’s Representative Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond. Major strides have been made here, as Clark appointed a new minister (Mary McNeill) and, perhaps more importantly, a new deputy minister (Stephen Browne). The moves have been hailed by Turpel-Lafond and by Ted Hughes, the former deputy attorney-general who reviewed the province’s child protection system. Grade: A ◗ 5. Restore all the gaming grants to charities and non-profit organizations. This was one of the dumbest cost-cutting measures of the Campbell government, and Clark has partially undone much of it. Many, but by no means all, of those organizations are getting their grants. Grade: B ◗ 6. Mend the relationship with B.C.’s teachers. An early sign that things were turning around on this issue was the attendance at the annual convention of the B.C. Teachers’ Federation of Education Minister George Abbott, who became the first education minister of the B.C. Liberal government to attend that gathering. The government also declined to appeal a court ruling striking down its law on class sizes. A good start, but still not enough to suggest successful contract negotiations with the BCTF are possible. Grade: C+

Charming smile fools no one

Dear Editor:

The Record’s May 27 opinion piece sums up the lopsided HST dispute quite well: “They’re bribing us with our own money.” And spending more than $5 million of taxpayers’ dollars in the desperate “sell” of the cash cow against $250,000 for the anti-HST side is about as balanced as setting a pit bull on a toy poodle. The shady alliance of B.C. Liberals and Big Business tells us that those costly stick-figure ads are just introducing the facts, but we know those stick-figures represent us, ripe for getting stuck. The whole smelly issue was born of the government’s lying about introduction of the HST, followed by the lie that the tax is “revenue-neutral.” So why should anyone believe the subsequent ◗Clark Page 7 volley of codswallop? There’s a strong clue of just

how big a burden on ordinary taxpayers the levy will be, if after a two per cent cut it still fits the Liberal-CEO need for greed. Our premier, the Tooth Fairy, can flash her molars at a dozen more photo-ops, but a strong majority of British Columbians know that this time the charming smile comes at too high a price. it was the late 1800s or early 1900s. It’s a fact of life that railroads run 24/7/365. I find people like this person amazing. They buy a house by a railroad or an airport and then want the trains or planes to go away. Due diligence says you knew it was there, suck it up. You moved next to a grizzly bear’s den and you seem surprised there is a bear next door? The locomotives have diesel engines, which are a little bigger than your old Betsy has. It’s cold, and your old car is difficult to start when its gets below zero. Let’s say your engine is two litres and has antifreeze in it. The locomotive has an engine of about 9,072 cubic inches or more and regular treated water in it because it wasn’t designed to have anti-freeze in it when it was designed. Yes, the new ones have anti-

freeze in some case, but most engines are more than a couple of years old. Now, if old Betsy doesn’t start, you call BCAA, right? They don’t come boost locomotives, and if you think a car engine costs a lot to replace, try a locomotive engine. If the scenery is the most important thing, you have to live with the railroad. If the noise is too much, smile and put your house on the market. You knew the railroad was there; you bought the house. Of course you can get the government to move the railroad. If so, I have no interest in paying my tax dollars to do it, just because you didn’t put two and two together when you bought the house. Move or live with it. You made the choice 14 years ago. As they say nowadays, man up and live with it and or move. Don’t go making everyone else pay for your poor choices. Eric Bradfield, by email

It’s interesting to note that all 10 of my suggestions could probably be found in an NDP campaign platform (indeed, my column was “retweeted” by an NDP MLA at the time) and Clark has adopted most of them to some degree, demonstrating there is indeed a new sheriff in town who is substantially different than the previous one. It should also be noted that Clark adopted some advice I humbly wrote in this space a couple of weeks back: She has pro-

posed to chop the rate of the HST by two points, as well as offer more HST rebates (she calls them “transition cheques”) to more British Columbians. I suggested taking those actions were the only things that could give the HST a fighting chance to pass muster in the upcoming referendum. Indeed, an Ipsos-Reid poll taken for Global News shows support for the tax is now in a dead heat with the opposition to it. Just a few months back, it seemed inconceivable that voters would warm up to the HST (when it was first introduced, polls indicated opposition to it was running about 91). A local recycling company’s plan to expand has highlighted a number of issues at the industrial site. Representatives of Urban Wood Waste Recyclers Ltd., a division of Harvest Power, recently sought city council’s support for the company’s request for a federal grant to help it expand its operation in the Braid industrial area. The business accepts construction and demolition waste materials and processes them for recycling. Keith Coueffin, the city’s manager of licensing and inspections, said the city will be doing detailed site investigations of Urban Wood Waste Recyclers in the near future. “We have done some preliminary work,” he said. “We will be doing detailed inspections in the very near future.” A staff report presented to council on Monday outlined a number of issues related to the storing and sorting of recycled materials, building permits, business license and dust pollution. “City staff were unaware of any concerns regarding this business until very recently when a complaint was received relating to dust pollution and the operation not complying with zoning regulations,” said a staff report. “Staff have subsequently viewed the site and met with the operators of the business. Staff also consulted businesses in the vicinity and Metro Vancouver staff.” Staff from various city departments will be doing detailed inspections of the site, which has revealed a number of bylaw and nuisance issues with its current operation. The city has also recommended that the company set up a minimum of two meetings with neighbouring businesses and residents to discuss its operating practices and plans for bylaw compliance and to hear from its neighbours. Mike Fournier, regional vice president of Harvest Power, said the company is pleased to work with the city, its neighbours and residents to address any

issues, some of which were inherited when Harvest Power purchased the company in September 2010. He said the company recognizes the need to improve its operations and is taking steps to do so. “It’s fair to say that we will fix the issues,” he said. Steve Rooney, president of Westcoast Cylinders Inc., said the air pollution from the recycling plant has created a “serious mess” for its neighbours for a long time. “We are covered by particulate falling from the sky,” he said. “It is like it is snowing.” Rooney said the problem isn’t as noticeable in the winter and spring when there’s natural moisture in the air, but becomes problematic as soon as there are a few consecutive dry days. “It has been a continual problem. We have been fighting this. We have been on them for the last four or five years,” he said. “Nothing happens.” Rooney is hopeful that the new owner’s plans for the site mean the situation will improve. Already, its expansion plans have prompted visits from city department. “Everybody is now taking a good look at this,” he said. “I think they got caught with their pants down.” When calls have been made to city hall in the past, Rooney said people were told to call Metro Vancouver as it was an air quality issue. With the expansion processes triggering a city review, he hopes improvements will be forthcoming. “I am hoping some positive change is coming out of it,” he said. Coun. Father pleads for information on anniversary

Bryan Braumberger went missing on June 1, 2007 after last being seen in New Westminster – and his family still holds onto hope BY ALFIE LAU REPORTER alau@royalcityrecord.com

June 1 is a day Ron Braumberger doesn’t celebrate. On that day in 2007, Ron’s 18-yearold son, Bryan Braumberger, disappeared, seemingly without a trace. Bryan had left a friend’s place in New Westminster, but he never returned to his Cariboo Heights home. His abandoned car was found in the parking lot of the George Derby Centre, a care home on 16th Avenue at Cumberland Street in Burnaby. Despite a four-year-long hunt for Bryan, the family is no closer to finding out what happened to Bryan. “In the last year, there has not been one single thing new,” said Ron. “We haven’t had any new tips. We’re in the same spot for the past four years, nothing has changed.” Ron, wife Janice and Bryan’s older brother Trevor are still holding out hope that Bryan will return home safe. “As it goes on, I actually have more hope that we’re going to get some sort of outcome,” said Ron. “The hope is still there, that’s he’s out there.” Ron admitted the last year hasn’t been a good one for his family, but the family continues to hold out hope for Bryan’s safe return. “You wake up with it every morning,

Wikipedia does plenty of good, says teacher

Wikipedia.org, despite being the first stop for most people seeking a grounded understanding on any topic imaginable, still suffers with a bit of an image problem, with content often viewed as suspect or under-researched. Breanna Gray, an English teacher at Douglas College, has found just the opposite in a new study. Wikipedia articles, which cover everything from the creation of the universe to a full episode list of Full House, at the self-described “free encyclopedia that anyone can edit” are often dismissed (not to mention inaccurate) precisely because “anyone” – as opposed to academics or professional editors – can add or change online content. Some teachers also complain students can be tempted to plagiarize from the unsourced material or at least not verify the so-called facts they find on the site. Gray assigned students to write short biographies of Canadian writers that would

then be posted on Wikipedia and found her charges became highly determined to make the work as accurate as possible, and may actually do better research. Gray, who will be presenting her findings this week at the 2011 Congress of the Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences in Fredericton, New Brunswick, says teachers need to start talking about Wikipedia and how it can be used. “The purpose of my paper is to start a discussion about it,” she said. Gray says it’s easy to criticize Wikipedia because of the unstructured way it is set up but, despite its faults, the site promotes solid values for its writers, such as precise citations, accurate research, editing and revision. “Those ideals are the ones we espouse as English instructors,” she said. What she found was that the moment the students realized their work was going public in a forum over which they had no control, they took the work a lot more seriously than they did conventional class assignments. Gray says it’s not only the fact that their work was going public that stimulated the students, it was the realization that in producing the Wikipedia entries they were acquiring skills that were transferable to other parts of their lives.

New Westminster man faces charges in Internet luring A New Westminster man is facing charges after he allegedly tried to lure a teen girl he’d met in a chat room. Brandon Matthew Parisien, 27, was arrested after a joint operation involving the New Westminster police and the RCMP Integrated Child Exploitation Unit. Police said Parisien chatted online with a person he believed to be a 13-year-old girl. He allegedly exposed himself to that person online and tried to meet the female to have sex. Parisien, however, was unaware that the “teen” he was communicating with was an officer from the Child Exploitation Unit.

Parisien was arrested at his home Wednesday. Police seized his computer equipment and found child pornography – photos and videos. He was charged with two counts of communicating via computer to lure a child under 16, and one count of possessing child pornography. Parisien was released under strict conditions that include having no contact with children under the age of 16. Police said he lives alone and has no children. “Every time we can arrest someone who is actively looking to take sexual advantage of children over the Internet, we

New mystery play première set slides that render the access road impassable – and, before long, another murder takes place. The cast includes Isabel Mendenhall as the owner of the lodge and Dwayne Campbell as the groundskeeper who is determined to discover the secret in his employer’s past. Mary Adams, Donna Thompson, Gina Raye Young and Rick Pare play the guests who gradually realize that a tragedy from their past is coming back to haunt them. Gallery opens new exhibition D E N T U R E S

A New Westminster-born artist is featured in the latest exhibition at Deer Lake Gallery. Looking Back is on at the Burnaby Arts Council’s gallery until June 19. The exhibition features the work of Deanna Fogstrom, whose family immigrated from the Swedish-speaking region of Ostrobothnia, Finland. She was born in New Westminster and grew up in Burnaby and Port Coquitlam. As an adult, she has reconnected with her family’s cultural heritage through the Scandinavian Community Centre. Her paintings for the Looking Back

exhibition are a collection of oil-on-canvas works based on photographs taken during Midsummer celebrations, when many people wear their unique heritage outfits. “It is my hope that paintings in this exhibit will call attention to the beauty and detail of Nordic folk costumes, as well as honour the people who, through wearing them, continue a colourful, vibrant tradition,” she says. got his start in art at Warsaw’s Academy of Fine Arts. The couple moved to Canada in the 1980s, after unrest in Poland and the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in neighbouring Ukraine convinced Anna it was time to leave. Ryzsard (or Richard) is best known for a 4.5-metre high sculpture called North Shore Rhapsody, which now resides at the Centennial Theatre in North Vancouver. He passed away in 2003 after a two-year battle with cancer. Anna and Ryszard were profiled in The Record’s sister paper, the Burnaby NOW, back on July 12, 2006, when, at the time, Anna had recently unveiled a refurbished sculpture of Ryszard’s, Queen of the Nature. The couple had separated by the time of Ryszard’s death, but Anna has been working ever since to keep his legacy of artwork alive. “He never stopped his creative work until the end of his life,” Anna said in

City councillor takes the helm Coun. Lorrie Williams has been elected as the new president of the Lower Mainland Local Government Association. The group is one of five associations of the Union of B.C. Municipalities. Its members include 33 local governments and three regional districts. “We get to plan the conference for the Lower Mainland,” Williams said. “We get to bring to the forefront Lower Mainland issues, whether its flooding or emergency preparedness, things that affect us as a group.”

Gearing up for another great season by Carly Rigby Over the past few seasons, the success of the New Westminster Salmonbellies on the floor has been matched by their accomplishments in many other areas of the club. Consistently counting the largest turnout of all the Western Lacrosse Association teams in the Lower Mainland, fans of the ‘Bellies have shown that they appreciate the attention the organization is paying to the details. While they are filling the seats in Queen’s Park Arena and making themselves known at road games, the Salmonbellies’ many followers are also avidly connecting with the club via various methods online. Messages of encouragement flooded in from far and wide when the team traveled to Peterborough to play in the Mann Cup last September and the web version

of the ‘Bellies Booster Booth has noted merchandise sales coming in from all over the globe. In an endeavour to engage even more of their fans around the world, the ‘Bellies recently launched Bellies TV, an initiative that will see six regular season games shown live via the team’s website. The popularity of the game day event dictates that nothing needs to change when it comes to the home game atmosphere provided by the ‘Bellies and staff. The barbecue and beer garden have become staples of a Thursday night at Queen’s Park Arena and the organization has no intention of changing that. Also returning will be the 50/50 and program draws, Vancity Frisbee toss and t-shirt launcher. President and GM, Dan Richardson has also hinted that the organization has a few tricks up its sleeve and promised plenty of incentive for fans to come out and support their ‘Bellies again this season.

The third annual Seats for Soldiers event will take place on June 9th when the Victoria Shamrocks pay them a visit for the ﬁrst time since being swept by the ‘Bellies, losing the WLA Championship in four games last summer. As a tribute to Canadian Soldiers everywhere, several events will be happening in and around the arena that night and admission will be waived for every member of the Canadian Forces, veterans, cadets and their families. New Westminster SALMONBELLIES There is always room for improvement by Carly Rigby After three consecutive Western Lacrosse Association championships and despite the three disappointing trips to the Mann Cup that resulted, one might have thought that the New Westminster Salmonbellies had a solid line-up already in place and that there would be few changes made through the off-season. That assumption would be far from the truth. After the dust of the sixth game series loss to the Peterborough Lakers had settled, it didn’t take ‘Bellies President and General Manager long to start mixing things up. His first bold move was one that few had predicted and ended a seven-year relationship b e t w e e n the club and former head coach Bob Salt. Without a specificsuccessor in mind, Richardson spent the following weeks interviewing and meeting with potential replacements and comparing notes with the close-knit staff that remained. In the end, he made the unexpected call to shuffle the existing coaches in order to fill the gap. Ken Thomas was promoted to the position of head coach to be flanked by Troy Poelzer, who returns to the bench after a one-year hiatus, and second year assistant, Chris Gill. Just a few weeks after the coaching announcements were made, fans were surprised by more news out of the New West camp. A hold-out for the 2010 season after being drafted first overall, lifelong ‘Bellie, Kevin Crowley, would once again be able to call Queen’s Park Arena home. In a

deal that sent three-year veteran Pete McFetridge to the Burnaby Lakers and also saw a few future draft picks change hands, the team landed the player Richardson liked to call “The Big Fish.” At the draft for the graduating juniors in February, the new coaching staff made their first public appearance and kicked off the event by announcing a trade that moved three of their first five picks to the Nanaimo Timbermen. With more than a few picks still remaining, the team celebrated a successful draft, obtaining the rights to Eric Lewthwaite, former junior ‘Bellie and son of Hall of Famer, Al. Also added to the roster were Matt Laustrup, Scott Rouse, Jay Card, Mike Lowe, Ryan MacKay, Jamie Dunbar and Scott Sproule. The beginning of the year was full of action for those close to the ‘Bellies and by the time March rolled around the organization was already making its third major announcement, acquiring the rights to eastern sharpshooter Jeff Zywicki. Richardson’s habit of playing his cards close to his chest served to once again shock the lacrosse world. After taking 18 months off of summer lacrosse, no one anticipated a return from Zywicki and particularly not on the west coast. Perhaps it was the appeal of the club’s history that lured him back or the fact that he’s spent so much time with a number of ‘Bellies while suiting up for the Washington Stealth of the National Lacrosse League. Regardless, the entire organization is thrilled to have him on board. “Jeff’s ability as a very skilled and intelligent player – and more importantly as a leader of exceptional character – is an exciting addition to the club,” said Coach Thomas. Even with the success they’ve seen in recent years, this Salmonbellies club refuses to stand still, taking step after step towards situating themselves to first of all host the national championship this coming September and next hoist their 25th Mann Cup. The 2011 drive has already begun, but the team brings it home for the first time on June 2nd when they will play host to the Maple Ridge Burrards.

great goal in parenting is teaching our kids about life and love: how to live good lives and how to love. I don’t want to put a damper on their dreams or ideals while I prepare them for the realities of life. The world is not perfect, but we can still be happy. None of us is perfect, but each of us is worthy of love. People talk about finding happiness and imagining it as a place where everything is perfect. They dream also of the perfect partner and falling in love. In the living of life, we will discover that it is seldom perfect and if it ever is, it won’t stay that way. Each of us is imperfect,

we all make mistakes, and everyone will disappoint us sooner or later. We will disappoint ourselves. But we can still be happy in an imperfect world, and we can still love one another imperfect as we are. The key is in grace, and grace can be manifested in two ways: in attitude and in action. ◆ Grace in attitude: How you see your world, other people and your self filters your vision, shades your feelings and shapes your actions. If you think of yourself as entitled, you will be continually disappointed. If you see yourself as a victim, you will feel angry and defeated. If you look to what you want and don’t have, you will feel incomplete and wanting, but if you count the good you’ve been given, you will feel blessed and content. If you are not feeling happy today, take a break from what you are doing. For a moment, put out of your mind your preoccupations, the injustice and the bad breaks in your life. Make a list of the good given to you in life so far – not just what you have this day but what

you’ve received in the past through luck or the grace of others. Think most of the things done for you and given to you that you cannot pay back. If you still struggle to appreciate the good in your life, seek out a friend with a positive attitude not tainted with cynicism. The negative words of friends can cast shadows on our own vision while our positive friends can shine greater light on our circumstances and illuminate our lives. We can express grace in seeing our lives as they are – and accepting the conditions we cannot change. We can express grace in our relationships by accepting the people we love just as they are, not seeking to change them and forgiving them when they disappoint us. ◆ Grace in action: Happiness is a choice. Love is a choice. Though we need an attitude of grace to accept the things we cannot change in life, grace in action moves us to see what we can and ought to do. This is the recognition of our own responsibility for our happiness.

Though we don’t choose the circumstances of our lives and cannot have total control of the outcome of our actions, we can still choose to act with grace: to make our best choices and to follow through with making life better for ourselves and others. Happiness is not a drug or a drink, a place or a situation, something we buy or another person. It is an attitude and a choice. It is in action. Though our family and our partners are imperfect and though we make mistakes and hurt each other, we can express grace in our relationships by seeing the best in one another, loving those qualities and bringing out the best in them. It’s been 17 years since a Vancouver Canucks team went on a memorable playoff run to the Stanley Cup. But Burnaby’s own Cliff Ronning finds the memories flooding back to him as if it all happened yesterday. “Yeah, absolutely. What I remembered was the excitement in the city,” Ronning said in a phone interview. “The fans and the city have waited a long time for this.” Ronning, who retired from the National Hockey League in 2006, played 18 years in the bigs on seven separate teams, including six seasons with the hometown Canucks. Canada won its third straight world indoor title at the third International Lacrosse Federation championships in Prague, Czech Republic on Saturday. The Canadian team defeated the Iroquois Nationals for a third consecutive time in the championship final, winning the gold medal with a 13-6 victory. Ontario’s Matt Vinc was named the championship game MVP, making 29 saves in the contest.

Shawn Evans led the Canadians with three goals and one assist, including a pair of counters in a seven-goal second quarter for the Maple Leafs. Victoria native Rhys Duch also garnered four points, including a pair of goals. Colin Doyle, Dan Dawson and Josh Sanderson also collected a pair of goals for the Canucks. New Westminster Salmonbellie lefty Jordan Hall garnered a point with an assist on the hat trick goal by Evans late in the final period. The United States earned a

third straight bronze medal, beating the host Czechs 16-7. Canada beat the Americans 1510 in the semifinals. Duch and Dawson both scored four times for the winners. John Grant Jr. added five points, including a hat trick. Free agent New Westminster Salmonbellie Jeff Zywicki chipped in with a goal and two helpers. Hall also contributed three points, in the win. New Westminster defender Brett Mydske played in all five games for Canada, scoring two

goals and adding a single assist. Salmonbellies Rory Smith and goalie Tyler Richards also shared in the gold medal. Other Canadians helping out international sides, included former Burnaby junor Jamie Plunkett with four goals and Kyle Ross of New Westminster with one for the Czech Republic in a 12-7 win over England in quarter-final play. Matt Roik was in goal for all of England’s games. Shawn Cable and current Burnaby Laker Chris Manwaring both scored three times for England.

The New Westminster Salmonbellies found themselves in an unusual spot after the second week in Western Lacrosse Association play. The defending WLA champion Salmonbellies slipped into a tie for last place with the Nanaimo Timbermen following a 97 loss to the Maple Ridge Burrards on Sunday. New Westminster fell behind from the get-go on Riley Loewen’s first WLA goal at 52 seconds of the opening period for the home team. Maple Ridge got the ball back on the restart, and Derek Lowe tallied 18 seconds later from former New Westminster junior Curtis Dickson, who led all scorers with five points, including a hat trick. The ’Bellies trailed 4-0 after the opening 20 minutes. Ian Hawksbee got the visitors on the board early in the middle frame and Alex Gajic, with back-toback markers almost two minutes apart, shaved the deficit to 4-3. But Dickson replied with three goals in three minutes, including two shorthanded counters just seconds apart, to reclaim the Burrards’ four-goal advantage. Nenad Gajic also scored while on the penalty kill to close out the period with New Westminster trailing 7-4. Maple Ridge started the third period like the first and led by five goals before Martin Cummings and Eric Lewthwaite, with his first multi-goal night for the ’Bellies brought the deficit to within a pair of goals. Mike Lowe and Salmonbellie junior Franki Scigliano shared the goaltending duties for New West. Another New West junior, Mark Negrin, garnered a pair of assists for the senior club. Former Salmonbellie Ron Schibild was the Burrards’ third star with 36 saves. New Westminster will entertain the Burrards at its home opener this Thursday at Queen’s Park Arena.

Field midﬁelder one of top seniors Stony Brook University senior Kevin Crowley was named a Lowe’s Senior Class All-American in field lacrosse on May 29. Crowley was one of five student athletes selected to the first team. The New Westminster midfielder maintained a 3.37 grade point average as a double major in business management and psychology at the New York university. Crowley was named to the Dean’s list in four semesters and was on the America East all-academic team and conference spring honour roll in 2009 and 2010. He was also named the State University of New York Chancellor’s

scholar athlete of the year for men’s lacrosse. As an underclassman, Crowley was the recipient of Stony Brook’s recognition award for excellence in athletics over the past two years. On field, Crowley will go down as one of Stony Brook’s all-time best players. He earned AllAmerican first-team status for a second straight season, while also earning the U.S. Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association midfielder of the year honour. British Columbia won both the open and under-23 women’s Canadian netball championships in Montreal May 22. The open team defeated Ontario 44-23 in the goldmedal final. Rebekah Eatmon had a strong game for B.C.

The u-23 team also played Ontario for gold, beating the eastern reps by 10 points in the championship final. The under-18 B.C. team settled for a bronze medal. Six B.C. women were named to the Canadian national team following the

nationals. Amonda Francis, Carolyn Churchland, Shawnette Cockburn, Sabrina Versteeg, Jessie Evans, Melissa Crowe and Kelseay Binns, the only u-23 player named, were selected to represent Canada.

I was playing to stay next year,” he said. For this season’s Vancouver Canucks, it’s perhaps the club’s best chance ever, and Luongo’s in particular, to prove all the naysayers wrong once and for all.

“I hate to say it, but (he has to) win the cup. (Luongo) doesn’t have to say anything after that. That’s the pressure of being a No. 1 guy,” Ronning said. As for how well Vancouver will stand up to Boston’s gritty play or how effective they might be against Vezina nominated goalie Tim Thomas, Ronning said, it’s all up to them. “It’s theirs to lose,” he said. (nee LATHAM) Born September 25, 1938 in Trail, B.C., passed away peacefully on Saturday May 28, 2011. Marion is survived by her caring husband Jack, daughter Colleen (Dudley Paul) and their children Molly, Caitlin and John, son Mark (Marilyn) and their children Veronica, Marina and Mark Jr. She is also survived by her brother, John Latham of White Lake, B.C. Marion is survived by her two brothers-in-law, Bob and Jim Butterworth. Marion will also be missed by her best friend, Joanne Tuft. Marion had many interests including badminton, bowling, bingo, shopping and trips to Reno for a little gambling. Her friends knew her as ‘Mrs. Clean’. Marion’s family was an important part of her life and she will be greatly missed by all who knew her. The family wishes to thank the caregivers at Royal City Manor for their kind and compassionate care. No service by request. Henderson (nee Stalker), Elinor June 30, 1933 - May 21, 2011 It is with great sadness we announce the sudden passing of our beloved wife, mother, mother-inlaw, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, cousin and friend. Elinor is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, Gordie, and their children Laura (Cliff), Susan (Brian), Rob (Nadia), Paula (Rick) and six grandchildren - Dylan, Nigel, Sara, Noah, Brianna and Liam, her mother Shirley Keary, and siblings Andy Stalker, Glen Stalker, Colleen Almond (Les), Bill Keary (Brendan) and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She is predeceased by her father Andrew Stalker; step-father William Keary; sister Julie Stuber and sister-in-law Doreen Stalker. Taken from us far too soon, Elinor lived life to the fullest by generously giving her time to others in love and friendship and through many years of committed volunteer work. Her retirement years with Gordie were spent traveling to Australia, Great Britain, Ireland, Mexico, the Panama Canal, Alaska and Maui. She will be greatly missed and forever remembered by all who knew and loved her. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Elinor’s memory to the BC Cancer Society or the Canadian Diabetes Association. A celebration of Elinor’s life will be held at a future date.

Predeceased by her brother John Eaves and her loving husband, William James Hughes. Survived by her sister, Beverley Eaves Friend, son, Robert Hughes, and daughters, Debra Hughes, Susan Daoust and Wendy Hughes, grandson, Sam Daoust, and granddaughter Stefanie Daoust.
