Dust driving neighbours to distraction Sapperton waste recycling plant faces city inspections BY THERESA MCMANUS REPORTER tmcmanus@royalcityrecord.com

Ian Ciprian’s home and workplace are covered in dust, but it’s not from lack of cleaning. Ciprian is the general manager of Abstract International Metals Inc., which is located next door to Urban Wood Waste Recyclers in the Braid industrial area. “Everything in our place is covered,” said Ciprian, whose hands were filthy after touching a wall inside his building. “This is their sawdust. Who knows what’s in it?” At Abstract International Metals, walls and floors are covered with a layer of dust. Items in the company’s warehouse have to be protected from dust. “We cover everything so when we supply it to our customers it is clean,” Ciprian said. “It costs us more to keep it clean. There is filth and dust in the world everywhere – we have a lot more of it.” Ciprian recently had to call a locksmith after he was unable to get into his business. “The locksmith squirted stuff in there and got it open. He said it was full of dust,” he said. Several businesses around Urban Wood Waste report that the dust situation is problematic year-round but is worse in the summer months because of the drier weather conditions. Dust from the recycling plant is carried by the wind – or water that’s now being poured on the piles of waste by water misters. “The wind is blowing it here. In effect you are getting sludgy water,” Ciprian said. “Depending on how the wind goes – you can actually see it.” MVT Canadian Bus Inc., which supplies HandyDART buses, is located near the recycling plant in the Braid industrial area. Employees have to rinse the vehicles before leaving to pick up passengers. Lyle Crowell, deputy maintenance manager, washes his own vehicle daily after getting home from work. “You get it inside the car. It’s on the dash,” he said. “It’s really fine dust.” Crowell said some employees have had to wear safety glasses because of the dust. He noted that there are times when people turn on their vehicles and dust flies out of

Metro Vancouver issued Urban Waste Management a pollution prevention order in 2010 requiring it to make some improvements to control dust from the site. Mike Fournier, regional vice president of Harvest Power, said the pollution prevention order mandated the use of water misters to control the dust. He said the water is heavier than the dust so it grabs the dust particles and settles them down so they’re not flying around. “The mist is making it worse,” Crowell said. “It dampens the dust. City teen braids for her team

Jaimie Rosenwirth isn’t your typical Grade 12 student at New Westminster Secondary School. When she’s not studying, she’s working at her aunt Joan Couzelis’ downtown restaurant, Couzie’s Café. But in her spare time, she’s making a difference with some cool bracelets with a Vancouver Canucks theme. Jaimie got the idea last year when the New Westminster Jr. Salmonbellies were playing in the Minto Cup and she decided to make the catchy red-and-blue bracelets for friends and the team. That idea went so well that she decided to make Vancouver Canucks bracelets, selling thinner string models for $2 and thicker ones for $5. She raised $1,058.50 last year for Canuck Place and with the Canucks making a spirited run for the Stanley Cup this year, she decided to continue her efforts. “My goal is to raise $2,117 for the Canucks Autism Network,” said Jaimie. “I want to double what I made last year.” Jaimie makes all the bracelets herself and she even pays for all the materials herself so that all sales go toward charity. “It takes seven minutes to make the thinner ones and 17 minutes to make the thicker ones,” she said, adding that she hasn’t asked for help from her friends and family because she has high standards for how the bracelets have to look.

Jason Lang/THE RECORD

Crazy Canuck: Jaimie Rosenwirth, 17, has raised thousands of dollars for local charities by making bracelets to commemorate the Vancouver Canucks’ Stanley Cup run. The NWSS student is using money made working at her aunt’s café to pay for the materials so that all proceeds go to the Canucks Autism Network. “I guess I’m a bit anal about it so I decided to keep it to myself,” she said. During this playoff run, Jaimie has already made more than $1,000 from bracelet sales and she sees that number growing the closer the Canucks come to the Stanley Cup.

Couzelis is very proud of Jaimie. “She’s a really amazing 17-year-old,” said Couzelis. “She works really hard and she’s doing this all for a good cause.” Couzelis said orders for the bracelets have come from as far as Iowa in the United States and Nunavut in Canada, with orders

coming from even further afield if the Canucks win the Stanley Cup. People can pick up Jaimie’s bracelets at Couzie’s Café at 817 Carnarvon St. or they can go to www.facebook.com/Canucks BraceletsforAutism. – By Alfie Lau, staff reporter

sticks.” Urban Wood Waste Recyclers, a division of Harvest Power, accepts construction and demolition waste materials and processes them for recycling. Since company officials sought city council’s support for a grant application to expand the operation, city staff has learned about a number of issues at the site including concerns about the storing and sorting of recycled materials and dust pollution, work done without building permits and the need for a new business license. On Monday afternoon, officials from Metro Vancouver and city hall did a detailed site inspection. Fire, building inspection, planning, plumbing and bylaw enforcement staff were among those taking part in the inspection at Urban Wood Waste Recyclers. “The city is providing a list of all out-

standing city requirements by Wednesday,” said Keith Coueffin, the city’s manager of licensing and integrated services. Fournier said Urban Wood Waste/ Harvest Power expects to receive a list of issues and concerns to be dealt with on Wednesday, share those with its neighbours on Thursday and meet with city officials on Friday and develop a game plan for dealing with the concerns. “Let’s put all the cards on the table and move forward,” he said. “We have no secrets. We have to make this thing work for everybody.” Coueffin said the city will discuss a “compliance plan” with Harvest Power that relates to permit requirements and zoning regulations. The city is liaising with Metro Vancouver regarding air quality/ dust issues at the site because the goal is to move forward in a coordinated manner. Harvest Power bought the company in

September 2010, but many neighbours have been complaining to Metro Vancouver for years about the dust generated from the site. Crowell said Harvest Power recently paved parts of the site that had gravel, which has minimized dust created by trucks coming and going from the site. “They have brought in new equipment. They are refining it more,” he added. “ It is grinding it finer. The wind is going to pick that up.” Ciprian, who lives in lower Sapperton, spent much of the Victoria Day long weekend power washing his house and yard, removing dust he believes originated at the recycling operation. “My house is totally filthy,” he said. “The dust just comes and comes.” Ciprian hopes Harvest Power will take action to resolve the longstanding dust issues at the site, but worries that it could

take quite a bit of time to fix the situation by moving the entire operation indoors. A recent report to city council stated that the grinding of recycled materials is taking place inside a building on the Harvest Power site, but a significant amount of recycled materials are being stored and sorted in uncovered areas throughout the site. This violates a section of the zoning bylaw that requires all recycling operations and storage to be done inside a fully enclosed building. “We are looking at full compliance with city bylaws and requirements,” Coueffin told The Record Tuesday. According to a staff report, some recent work undertaken at the site was done without all of the required building permits. This work included building a new maintenance structure, developing a new weigh scale building and paving a portion of the site.

Tragedy struck a New Westminster family Friday as a two-year-old child fell to her death from an eighth-storey window. The incident happened at 2 p.m. at an apartment building in the 700-block of Fifth Avenue. “We believe the child propped herself up on a bed against a wall where the window was,” said New Westminster Police Staff Sgt. Chris Mullin. Emergency crews attended the scene and provided first aid to the girl before transferring her to Royal Columbian Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. On Tuesday, New Westminster Police said the investigation is ongoing. The toddler’s name has not yet been released. “Police investigators continue to conduct interviews in this tragic incident. A police statement will be released at the conclusion of the investigation,” said Sgt. Gary Weishaar in a press release. “Our Victim Assistance Unit continues to work with the child’s family and friends. Our police organization is profoundly saddened by the loss of this child.” Within an hour of the fatal fall, another child fell out of a third-storey window in New Westminster. However, the little boy landed on grass and survived. “He was conscious and taken to Royal Columbian Hospital,” Mullin said. Police are warning parents to ensure their children do not play around open windows, balconies and doors. – Mike Raptis, The Province, and Brent Richter, The Record

Quest for the Cup: From left, Ryan Grewal, David Lee, Aiden Dutta and Daifel Bachra are among the kids in the Tiny Tots program at Queensborough Community Centre who’ve created their own Stanley Cup.

Some of the Vancouver Canucks’ youngest fans have a Stanley Cup to call their own. The 62 kids involved in the Tiny Tots program at the Queensborough Community Centre recently created their own 3-D version of the Stanley Cup. “It looks just like the Stanley Cup,” said Renee Chadwick, manager of the community centre. “All the kids in our preschool class are participating.” Once the cup was constructed with cardboard, the kids then painted their creation silver and put their names on their very own version of the Stanley Cup. “The kids are so enthusiastic of the Canucks,” Chadwick said about the program attended by three- to fiveyear-olds. “It even starts when they are little.” It’s not just the wee ones in Queensborough who are excited about the Vancouver Canucks 2011 playoff run. The community centre’s staff has created a shrine of Canucks items, posted the Canucks’ playoff schedule and tuned in the TV in the lobby to the games. “They love that we are so supportive of the Canucks,” Chadwick said about visitors to the centre.

During those free-spending years, Canadian household debt reached new, shocking levels. The average Canadian owes $112,000. Debt is growing at more than six per cent a year, while wages are growing at about 4 to 4.5 per cent per year. In December, the level of Canadian

Civility long gone from legislature IN THE HOUSE KEITH BALDREY

I

f the last few days of the justwrapped legislative session indicated anything, it was this: the nasty, divisive, brawling nature of B.C. politics has returned. From the moment Premier Christy Clark took her seat in the house last week, the atmosphere in the legislature changed noticeably. Almost immediately, Clark seemed to get under the skin of New Democrats – most noticeably party leader Adrian Dix – in a manner seldom seen before. And for his part, Dix gets a rise out of B.C. Liberals that his predecessor, Carole James, never got close to attaining. The question periods of the last week were beyond raucous. As Dix and Clark squared off each day, the din became so loud it was hard to hear either of them. Both sides were seething with rage at each other, and Speaker Bill Barisoff seemed to give up trying to maintain any sense of decorum. It hasn’t been like this for quite a long time. Oh, things were pretty bad during the

waning days of the Bill Vander Zalm government, and likewise the air was poisonous after the 1996 election, when the B.C. Liberals were all bent out of shape because they had just lost an election they thought was a lock to win. The first couple of years of the Gordon Campbell government were characterized by a meanness openly displayed to the only two surviving NDP MLAs, Joy MacPhail and Jenny Kwan. But when Carole James took over as NDP leader, relations between the two sides improved significantly. James and Campbell never displayed the personal rancor that characterized so many of their predecessors (Glen Clark and Campbell seemed to almost despise each other, and there certainly was no warmth between Dave Barrett and Bill Bennett) Both James and Campbell pledged to create an air of civility and co-operation in the legislature, and it worked for the most part. Oh, the odd question period could get pretty rough; however, things would quiet down fairly quickly. But trust me, those days are long gone. New Democrats seem to genuinely dislike Clark (in fact, Dix told me during the leadership race that he hoped Clark would win because she would particularly fire up his party’s members). And Clark cements those

Re: You bought it, so live with it, The Record, June

Mr. Bradfield makes some amazing revelations in his letter. He makes it sound like there are endless economical living options around the Lower Mainland and if one doesn’t like his present location he should just buy somewhere else. It’s too bad I didn’t read his letter before I bought my house because if I did I would have heeded his advice and bought next to him in Queen’s Park (or where ever else his “common sense” told him to go). People buy where they can afford and sometimes, over time they realize that something they thought would be tolerable … isn’t. So then they try to see what they can do to make it more tolerable. this has been going on all over Canada for the last 20 years. Google “cessation of train whistles” and you will see that it has been successfully implemented in dozens of municipalities so far. No one in New Westminster is asking for special treatment, just for what is already established as possible. No matter what the evidence says, some people just can’t seem to let go the idea of “they were here first.” Which is ironic considering in Canada, 99 per cent of the population was not. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Cuba: Careful with views ◗ continued from page 6

on Cuba. I would caution anyone, particularly a “journalist,” who parachutes into a country like Cuba for a few short days and then is of the mind that they can offer accurate political commentary. I have been to Cuba every two months for the past two years. I know a great number of families there and I have a girlfriend there. As a result my experience is perhaps more extensive than Jennifer’s. Having said that, stating silly things like people using the Granma for toilet paper leaves me fuming. I am sure in some quarters of the population here in the GVA some unfortunate soul may have done the same with your paper but does this equate to social commentary or accurately reflect the availability of toilet paper? Really! Toilet paper is in abundance in Cuba but the quality is generally poor. If the Granma is used it is more likely due to a person not being able to afford to purchase some at the time. In fact, the Granma itself is not easy to find in many parts of Cuba particularly west of Havana. It is one thing to comment on the dollars earned per day but one must also layer in how that relates to the respective cost of living in Cuba. You left out the part about the two currency system in Cuba. Some things are tremendously affordable for Cuban citizens and others are tremendously expensive. It depends upon

many factors. You are correct on the literacy remark. Did you also know that the average Cuban life span equates with the U.S. at around 78 years and this is partly due to a fully accessible (though often under resourced) health care system. This is also due to other factors like a lack of obesity and sedentary lifestyle. As much as we may criticize the government, by default Cuba offers us a glimpse into the past. What did people look like physically when more of the work was done manually? I am always impressed by how fit and strong even the elderly men are. What did the coral reef systems of the Carribean look like before chemical fertilizer run-off? Cuba has a fantastically preserved reef system and the diving is amazing. What did people do together before everyone had a tech device tethered to their hand? What was it like when families routinely sat around the table together to eat their meals? What is it like in a country where half the people get around on bicycles, where public transit is heavily used and where hitchiking is not only lawful but commercial vehicles must pick them up when they are empty and can carry people – say – in the back of their dump truck? What is it like in a non-throw away society? I’m sorry, Jennifer. Your commentary was light. Sadly you missed most of the important and fascinating nuances of this island country that historically has had the influence of a continent. Kirby Briggs, by e-mail

intense negative feelings because she openly mocks the NDP, making fun of them at every turn. The openly hostile relationship between Clark and Dix was on display not only during question period, but also during debates on the spending estimates for her office. The change from the tone during the Campbell/ James era could not be more startling. The personalities of the two people vying to be premier are remarkably different from each predecessor. Whereas Campbell disliked politics and loved the minutia of public policy, Clark loves all things about politics and doesn’t seem overly interested in the policy side of things, unless she can work a populist angle into the mix. While James was

conciliatory and ready to embrace the political middle, Dix is combative and focused solely on those people who share his political views (in fact, one joke goes, Dix is more like Campbell than Clark is). The brief encounters this past week between Dix and Clark signal that the next election campaign will be marked by some pretty nasty personal attacks. Dix keeps insisting Clark is some far-right wing demon, hell-bent on helping business at every turn (although a number of her policies, such as raising the minimum wage, hardly fit that description, but no matter). And Clark is determined to paint Dix as some kind of hard-line leftist (although she plucked one of Dix’s policies – raising corporate taxes, which

until she did was supposed by some kind of evil lefty idea) who will wreck the economy. Throw in the NDP’s dark mutterings about Clark’s supposed link to the BC Rail scandal and the Liberals’ penchant of reminding everyone that Dix once falsified a memo in the middle of a police investigation of his former boss, and the stage is set for a bitter, personal, knockdown fight come the next election. The two leaders’ personalities, styles and philosophies have ensured B.C. is moving back to a deeply polarized electorate. The politics of inclusion are gone – while the politics of divisiveness are upon us once again. Keith Baldrey is chief political correspondent for Global BC.

College honoured

Douglas College has been recognized for its effort to be a truly international institution. The Association of Canadian Community Colleges awarded Douglas with its inaugural Internationalization Excellence award at its annual conference in Edmonton on Tuesday. The association set up the award to honour colleges that both welcome foreign students and have programs and services outside of Canada. “Internationalization is an integral part of the college’s teaching, research learning and service functions,” said Guangwei Ouyang, associate vice-president of international education at Douglas. “Global citizenship and intercultural competence are key indicators of a student’s success.” Students from more than 40 countries now account for roughly 10 percent of the full-time student body. And every year, more than 100 students participate in overseas programs such as practicums, field schools and internships. ‘

Many people are unaware of the best way to recycle milk, cream and milk substitute containers. Bringing them to the Return-It Depot guarantees they’ll be turned into something useful like cardboard boxes and tissue paper. So why not change your good habits. Return your milk containers with your refundable beverage containers. It’s easy. Quickly rinse them out and crush them. Remove any caps and bring them too, because they get recycled separately. There’s no refund on milk empties because there’s no deposit when you buy, but you’ll be doing the right thing. So on your next trip to Return-It, bring the udder ones too.

NOW YOU KNOW WHERE THEY SHOULD GO.

City eyes building plan City residents respond to Sapperton rezoning BY THERESA MCMANUS REPORTER tmcmanus@royalcityrecord.com

An upcoming public hearing is shaping up to be a lively affair in New Westminster council chamber. The Elizabeth Fry Society has applied to rezone 273 and 275 Sherbrooke St. from single detached dwelling district to a comprehensive districts zone. The society is proposing to erect a building that is four levels on the north half of the site (adjacent to the lane) and two levels on the south side of the site (adjacent to Kelly Street). “The four-storey portion of the building would have a 37-space licensed child

care on the ground floor, a multipurpose room on the second floor and offices of the Elizabeth Fry Society on the third and fourth floors,” said a report to city council. “The two-level portion of the building would contain 10 units of non-market (social) housing to provide long-term, independent housing for women.” Already, the City of New Westminster has received 59 emails and letters about the application, with 52 supporting the proposed development and seven opposing. The city has also received a petition signed by seven people who are concerned about the introduction of commercial uses into a residential neighbourhood and the potential traffic and parking impacts on the immediate neighbourhood.

City staff believe that the proposed development satisfies a number of city initiatives related to childcare, non-profit housing and the retention of employment in the city. “The official community plan amendment proposed will introduce an institutional component into a single-detached neighbourhood,” said a staff report. “The site is adjacent to the Royal Columbian Hospital and the proposed development could serve as a buffer to the future expansion of the hospital.”

New challenges for child care in city Full-day kindergarten adds a wrench for child-care planning BY THERESA MCMANUS REPORTER tmcmanus@royalcityrecord.com

Christine Peters has a couple of child-care options for her two children – but only because she took action more than two years ago. The Royal City resident’s two daughters are already in daycare, but those arrangements could change come September when her oldest daughter starts kindergarten. Her children currently attend Kids Day Care Centre at the Victoria Hill site; it transports school-aged students to Richard McBride and Herbert Spencer elementary schools but not to F.W. Howay, which is her home’s catchment area. “I got on the waiting list for the Howay after-school care at least two years ago,” she said. “It took me 15 months to get into Kids Day Care. You have to be so prepared. What about families just moving into New Westminster?” Peters considers herself be one of the lucky ones because her early planning has given her some options for child care. If her daughter gets into the early French immersion program at Herbert Spencer, both of her kids will be able to continue attending their current daycare; if her eldest daughter doesn’t get into the early French immersion program, she’ll attend F.W. Howay and go to the out-of-school program offered at that school, having made it to the top of the waiting list. “I have options,” she said. “I am one of the prepared people. What if people don’t know they have to be on these waiting lists?” The city’s child-care action team, a subcommittee of the New Westminster early childhood development committee, notes that the introduction of full-day kindergarten will further challenge the availability of beforeand after-school care for children in New Westminster. “We have had a large number of spaces that have opened up in the last two years,” said John Stark, the city’s senior social planner. “The difficulty is with infant-toddler and school-aged care.”

Larry Wright/THE RECORD

A place to for kids: Mike Graham (third from left), director of programs, and coordinator Desmond Teves at Glenbrook out-of-school care, with students (from left) Erin Roberts, Erin Scott, Kayla Gibson Rory Anjos, Ian Hunter and Dane Yule. Finding out-of-school care is becoming an increasing challenge in the city.

Those age groups have specific challenges because infant-toddler care requires a higher staff to child ratio and has to be located in buildings with specific safety requirements in place. Beforeand after-school care facilities have to be located within a reasonable proximity to elementary schools. “We have had some increases,” Stark said about before- and afterschool care. “It is nowhere near keeping pace with the increase arising with full-day kindergarten.” Stark, a member of the childcare action team, noted that a lot of parents who would have had their children in daycare programs for three- to five-year-olds may now need before- and afterschool care because of full-day kindergarten. “This will be an issue,” he said. “The first step to moving forward is to acknowledge the need, to work together. It may require senior government funding.”

Peters would like to see more program. Our lowest is School Society, is well acquainted with the challenges one year and our longest is three of out-of-school programs. The years.” Graham said “waiting lists are society runs eight school-aged programs in New Westminster, a funny thing” in that they’re not including three facilities that are predictable. Parents may place currently offering a kindercare their children on a number of

waiting lists, get in to one centre and no longer need the services of another but still have their name on its list. “We have had kids age out on our waiting list and never get into our program,” he added. Graham noted that children attending the society’s beforeand after-school programs may have started in kindergarten or Grade 1, depending on the facility, and stay there until Grade 7 – so those spaces aren’t available for other children during that time. For staff who have been working in the centre’s kindercare programs, they’ve been working eight-hour shifts. With kindercare programs “going to be a dinosaur” with the introduction of full-day kindergarten, Graham said staff in those programs will now have to work split shifts from 7 to 9 a.m. and 2 to 6 p.m. “It will be challenging,” he said about the split shifts. “I may lose a couple staff by the end of ◗Child care Page 12

Artist part of Mid-Main Art Fair

A New Westminster artist is showing her work as part of the upcoming Mid-Main Art Fair. The show features work by more than 15 artists – including New Westminster’s Marney-Rose Edge. A biography on her website notes that Edge is a New Zealand-born artist who put down roots in Canada in 1992. Following a career of nearly 30 years in the graphic arts and printing industry, Edge has turned to full-time

work as a painter. She’s a member of the Federation of Canadian Artists and, alongside painting, also teaches workshops and leads demonstrations for local art clubs. The Mid-Main Art Fair will also include work by Burnaby artists James Koll and Roxsane Tiernan. Also in the show will be work by Enda Bardell, John Beatty, Jackie Conradi-Robertson, Jennifer

Harwood, Rithea Lamarche, Faith Love-Robertson, Debra McArthur, Edward Peck, Emmanuelle Renard, Cheryl Roller, Elisabeth Somerville, Deborah Strong and Larry Tillyer. The Mid-Main Art Fair is on Sunday, June 12 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Heritage Hall, 3012 Main St. (at 15th) in Vancouver. Child care: Programs have benefits for kids ◗ continued from page 11

the summer.” When done properly, Graham said school-aged care provides age-appropriate and developmentally appropriate programs for children. “We are not babysitters. It’s not babysitting. That is the stereotypical view that society has of this,” he said. “We are not a daycare. That is the wrong term – we are a school-aged program.” Graham said middle-childhood educators have a vital role to play in providing experiences and opportunities to the kids in their care. Because the centres are open during the summer, winter and spring breaks and on professional days, he said they often spend more time with children than

parents and teachers. “The average child will spend 1,600 hours per year here,” he said. “We have the ability to make a difference in a child’s life.” The child-care action team states that there are many benefits associated with quality care, including helping children to learn how to get along with others and gain new skills in a safe and nurturing environment, which helps to improve child outcomes such as school readiness and success. Graham said many of the beforeand after-school programs share space with school programs. If the society had more space in which to operate, it would be able to accommodate more children.

Stark said New Westminster’s schools are operating at capacity, but planning for new schools is considering the potential for before- and afterschool programming. All kindergarten students entering the school system on Sept. 6, 2011 will be attending school for the entire school day, rather than just a half-day. “This will be an issue,” Stark said. “The first step to moving forward is to acknowledge the need, to work together. It may require senior government funding.” The City of New Westminster conducted a child-care needs assessment in 2008. One of its findings was a shortage of licensed before- and afterschool care for kids aged six to 12.

Kids win for posters AROUND TOWN

A

fish that harkens back to the time of dinosaurs was the focus of a recent environmental poster contest for local students. Three local students received prizes for their submissions to the 2011 environmental poster contest, which was sponsored by the City of New Westminster and the New Westminster school district. Organizers received 151 entries from students at five schools for the contest that was open to students in Grade 5 and 6. The theme of this year’s poster contest was Threats to the Fraser River Sturgeon. Students were invited to create a poster that illustrated the environmental threats to this prehistoric giant of the Fraser River. Sharlyn Cordova of Lord Tweedsmuir Elementary School won first place; Madison

Stocker of Richard McBride Elementary School won second prize; and Camille Santos Manacsa of Queensborough Middle School won third prize. All winning artwork will be displayed at this year’s Artists on the River – Rivers Day celebration event, which takes place in September. The Fraser River Sturgeon Conservation Society donated lesson plans and copies of the award-winning book, Tale of the Great White Fish, to the schools to support the contest.

Top student

New Westminster Secondary School student Ryan Wei is one of the lucky students selected to attend the prestigious Shad Valley program this summer. Ryan was selected from more than 1,000 applicants across Canada to attend the program that exposes students to science and innovation in a fun, teambased environment. Shad Valley takes place at 10 universities across Canada and gives participants a chance to experience campus life firsthand.

Through lectures, workshops and team-building activities run by the university faculty and industry leaders, students will be exposed to advanced topics that aren’t regularly featured in high school curriculum. Participants in Shad Valley have top marks and a strong community focus. “At Shad Valley, we inspire participants to dream big and achieve their full potential,” said president Barry Bisson in a press release. “The personal growth that participants experience is life-changing and transformational. With increased confidence, exposure to innovation and entrepreneurial thinking, and enhanced problem solving skills, Shad Valley alumni are ready to make a strong impact on Canada and the world.” Ryan has been featured in Around Town in the past for his efforts to raise funds for homelessness. He’s formed small band ensembles that have performed at Royal City Centre during the Christmas holiday season. Do you have an idea for Around Town? Drama: Tony Antonias, left, and D. Neil Mark present part of Burning Up the Infield: The 1974 Frasers, during a special event at New Westminster Public Library on March 27. A reading is being staged at Douglas College on Sunday, June 12.

Play explores sports history

Yes, everyone’s minds are on hockey – but it’s time to start thinking about baseball. A piece of New Westminster’s sporting history is being immortalized in a special production at Douglas College on June 12. City Stage New West is presenting a staged reading of the new play Burning Up the Infield: the 1974 Frasers – based on a book by local authors Ken McIntosh and Rod Drown. The production tells the story of a young, semi-pro baseball team that briefly launched New Westminster to international fame. Selections from the book and the play

were presented at a special World Theatre Day event at the New Westminster Public Library in March, and the play is now getting ready for its first performance. The staged reading, with music, will feature Blu Mankuma, Vincent Tong, Chris Robson, Mike Antonakos, Gemma Isaac, Jeremy Lowe and others, and it will include a talkback session. It’s on Sunday, June 12, at 2 p.m. in Douglas College’s Laura C. Muir Performing Arts Theatre. Tickets are $20/$15, on sale now through the Massey Ticket Centre at 604521-5050 or tickets.masseytheatre.com. See www.citystagenewwest.org.

Keeping love alive HEALTHWISE

DR. DAVIDICUS WONG

R

ecently, I wrote that love is a choice. Yet in my office, I spend hours counseling men and women whose partners have told them that they no longer love them. The news is devastating and perplexing, and with a sense of hopelessness, they feel distraught. We often talk of falling in and out of love as if love is something magical and mysterious and out of our control. It’s much like how we think of happiness; some see it as a matter of luck. In my series, A Hundred Days to Happiness (davidicuswong.wordpress.com), I’ve shown how much of our happiness is within our control. In spite of the challenges of life, many have discovered enduring happiness – through intention, attitude and action. Love is a flower that requires daily care, but because it is shared by

two, it requires both to stay alive, thrive and bloom. When we begin a relationship, love is in full bloom. Most of us don’t realize what we have to do to keep it that way. We never learned that regular maintenance is required. We didn’t get any instruction manual. The principles of cognitive therapy are not only helpful in counseling couples; they can guide us in the preventive and proactive care of our relationships – before we fall out of love. Our feelings, thoughts and actions interact and influence one another. Our feelings filter how we see one another. Our thoughts influence our emotional reactions. Our behaviour is motivated by both our thoughts and feelings. We interpret the behaviour of others with assumptions that may or may not be accurate, and our interpretations shape how we feel about them. To simplify our lives, we naturally and unconsciously develop assumptions about one another. We develop fairly rigid schema or cognitive frameworks in our minds that are in short simplified ways of thinking about

one another. This is helpful in many ways. You don’t have to reintroduce yourself to the person waking up next to you in bed or have a deep conversation with the one sitting across from you at the breakfast table each morning. On the other hand, our rigid conceptions can keep us from seeing the whole person – one who is complex, growing and evolving. We make assumptions about one another and we may fail to talk, listen and understand how we really feel and think. Many couples tend to caricature one another and we tend to do this in a negative way. “She always does this.” “He never does that.” In reality, few of us are that consistent. In upcoming columns and in my blog, I’ll explore the common communication traps we fall into and how we can keep the flower of love alive. Dr. Davidicus Wong is a physician and writer. His Healthwise column appears regularly in this paper, and his blog can be found at davidicuswong.wordpress. com, twitter.com/drdavidicuswong and facebook.com/ davidicus.wong. Dance star on the rise

A New Westminster dancer is facing off against B.C.’s best this week. Graham Kaplan, a 2011 grad of New Westminster Secondary School, is in Kamloops for the Performing Arts B.C. Festival, running from June 5 to 9. The event brings together festival winners from across the province to compete in a variety of musical and dance categories. Kaplan, who’s a senior company dancer with Danzmode Productions, is competing in the senior stage category in dance. His solo was choreographed by Rachael Poirier, owner and director of Danzmode Productions. Earlier this year, he was also honoured at a major festival in Portland, Oregon, where he received the Senior

Outstanding Dancer award out of more than 200 dancers. A press release notes that the honours come on top of numerous local awards. Kaplan has consistently scored high marks for both solos and duos, and he has claimed trophies, scholarships and nearly $2,000 in prize money. Kaplan started dancing at the age of nine at Richmond’s Urban Dance Co. As he moved onto high school at NWSS, he switched over to Danzmode Productions in Burnaby. He became part of the senior company there and has since moved up to the top company, Performance Group. Over the past two years he has also been strengthening his technique under the direction of Heidi Zolty, owner of Ballet Classique.

The 2011 Sapperton Day Street Festival is a non-profit community event put together by the Sapperton Business Association with support from both the McBride Sapperton Business Association and Wesgroup Properties. This is its 9th consecutive year after returning from a short hiatus. Sapperton Days has been around since the early 1970’s. Sapperton was established by the Royal Engineers, the Sappers, in 1859.

All proceeds raised on the day of the event are donated to the Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation’s $2.8 million dollars campaign to build a Multipurpose Intervention Suite to provide greater care for heart, stroke and aneurysm patients at Royal Columbian Hospital. The Royal Columbian Hospital cares for 1.6 million people (one in three British Columbians) from Burnaby to Boston Bar. 85% of patients treated at RCH come from outside of New Westminster. RCH is responsible for treating the most critically ill and injured patients in the province in the areas of child and adult trauma, cardiac and stroke, aneurysms, high risk maternity and premature babies.

Entertainment and Music at Sapperton Day Faceplants

Formed in 2007, THE FACEPLANTS from Coquitlam, British Columbia have been working hard on their chops, playing as many live shows as is possible and writing some catchy tunes that have started to take hold of young music fans in the province. Citing influences such as the The Police, Marianas Trench, and the Mad Caddies, The Faceplants have created their own mix of upbeat and fresh party music. While some ska/punk bands get tied up in crafting some sort of heavy message, the Faceplants message is simple and clear: “we are here to party”. The Faceplants were B.C.’s top teen band 2009 and were the winner of the 2009 99.3 Fox’s seed contest.

Duck Soldier is a 15-piece soul/R&B band from New West Secondary School, complete with horn section and backing vocals.

Tuesdays at the Marquee are a recently formed musical duo from Port Coquitlam, B.C. This young Blues/Rock/ Indie/Acoustic influenced group has been recognized as an up and coming talent. They are Kellan Roman-Barnes and Jonah Yano.

The group recently opened the Hyack Festival at La Perla Ballroom to glowing reviews.

Upon finishing up the acoustic “David Anthony Project”, David Anthony felt it was time to get back to his rock roots. Having experienced success in the past with his Vancouver Seeds 2004 winning group “Suspect”, David has shared the stage with many notable acts such as Nickelback, Green Day, Billy Talent, Theory of a Deadman and Thornley. 0, David co-founded Merge with Steve McMullen. Citing intentions of creating a group that was a rock band at the core but was very capable of cross-genre transference, Merge uses strong melodies and unique songwriting to divulge their sound and image. The Vancouver group is rounded out with Paul Boparai on bass.

STM track marches to younger beat BY TOM BERRIDGE SPORTS EDITOR tberridge@royalcityrecord.com

The St. Thomas More boys had their best finish since 2007 at this year’s B.C. Secondary Schools track and field championships. STM placed sixth in the boys’ aggregate, garnering 32 points to finish ahead of Gleneagle and just behind Kelowna and fourth-place Vancouver College. Oak Bay earned both the boys’ and girls’ team banners to win its unprecedented 10th straight team aggregate. Although the Burnaby independent had just one gold medal “We exceeded our to show for it, expectations. I the Knights boys’ team still had a thought we had lot of encouraga good chance in ing moments. The Knights the 4x100. It was 4x100 metre full of personal boys’ team of Grade 11 runners bests.” Mikey Carney and Marwin Empainado, and DAVID MATTIAZZO STM head track coach juniors Sebastian Adugalksi and anchor Giovanni Trasolini took STM’s fourth relay gold medal in the last six years with a winning personal-best time of 43.51. The foursome, with Ross Hilliam substituting for Empainado, missed qualifying for the 4x400m with a 15th-place finish in the preliminary heats held Friday. “We focused on the 4x100. We were happy with what we have accomplished. Next year, we’ll do better,” said Adugalski, who came sixth in the long jump at 6.26m and posted a personal-best time in the 110m hurdles, finishing seventh overall. “But actually it was pretty good, Grade 10 and everything.”

Mark Booth/THE RECORD

Rounding the bend: New Westminster Secondary’s Ethan Strome, right, placed fifth in the juvenile boys’ 200 metres. Trasolini also certainly has better days ahead of him. The 6-3 sprinter qualified for the 100m final in a PB time of 11.37 before placing fourth overall in the Percy Williams final with a slightly slower time. He also finished seventh in the 200m final after qualifying in the zones with a sub-23 second clocking. “This meet wasn’t the same, but I’m happy with it,” said Trasolini. “We exceeded our expectations. I thought we had a good chance in the 4x100. It was full of personal bests,” said STM coach Dave Mattiazzo.

Among the PBs was Carney’s 11.67 time in the 100m, where he failed to qualify in 15th place. Another one came to senior Knight Luca Molinari, who finished his high school career with a pair of top-five finishes in field events. Molinari placed fifth in the shot put with a heave of 13.43m. He also finished fourth in the hammer throw, a discipline he had first taken up only this season. Molinari’s throw of 47.54m was less than a metre from stepping onto the podium for a first time. “I got knocked off in the hammer on

the last throw. I started hammer in January and got a personal best, I can’t complain,” said Molinari, who will continue his track career at Simon Fraser University next year. “It’s pride, that’s why I went (to STM). I went there to be an athlete.” Pam Ho had STM’s best individual showing, winning a bronze medal in the girls’ high jump with a personal-best leap of 1.60m. Ho missed a chance to compete for a second medal in the long jump due to a injury, but isn’t complaining.

’Bellie fans get money’s worth in home opener BY TOM BERRIDGE SPORTS EDITOR tberridge@royalcityrecord.com

The St. Thomas More Knights finished fourth at the B.C. high school AA girls’ soccer championships on Saturday. The Knights missed the bronzemedal, dropping the consolation final 1-0 to North Vancouver’s Windsor Dukes at Burnaby Lake Sports Complex-West after a heartbreaking loss in the semifinal Friday. After topping Pool A with a perfect 3-0 record through the preliminary round, STM fell 2-1 in overtime to Ballenas in the championship crossover match. The Knights led the Nanaimobased school 1-0 off a corner header by Eleni Tolusso until late in the match, when a Ballenas counter in the last second of injury time sent the game to extra time. “Truthfully, (Ballenas) took the game over. (Vanessa) Campbell was sensational,” said STM head coach Carlo Zavarise of his goalie. Nanaimo took the lead early in

More than 1,100 New Westminster fans got a good look at two of their newest senior A Salmonbellies in a 14-4 win over the Maple Ridge Burrards last Thursday. Ontario free agent Jeff Zywicki and rookie Kevin Crowley shared the game stars, while leading the ‘Bellies to its first win of the Western Lacrosse Association season. Zywicki had three goals and two assists, while Crowley did one better, firing four goals and leading all shooters with six points in his senior debut. “What can I do?” joked Crowley after the game. “Jack Fulton Sr. was on my case before the game and said ‘we gave up a lot for

you,’ so I had to produce.” Crowley dropped the first ball to reach his stick on his opening shift, but got a nice shot on goal on a break from the bench on his next turn on the floor. During an early threeon-five penalty kill, the 6-3 righty knocked off a full minute on his own with a fine rag. Zywicki and Crowley almost hooked up on a goal on some promising early chemistry that resulted in a great scoring chance. On his next shift, Crowley got the ball on a give-and-go in empty space in front of the net and buried the ball behind former Salmonbellie keeper Ron Schibild for his first goal as a senior. Crowley followed that up with a shorthanded goal ◗Bellies Page 26

Jr. Bellies take over third place BY TOM BERRIDGE SPORTS EDITOR tberridge@royalcityrecord.com

New Westminster posted back-to-back wins over Port Coquitlam and Delta in B.C. Junior Lacrosse League games last weekend. The junior A Salmonbellies bested the Saints 9-5 in PoCo June 3, before edging the Islanders 7-5 in Ladner the following day. Spencer England backstopped New Westminster’s win against PoCo, stopping 29 shots. England currently leads all keepers with a league-best 3.00 goals against average and an 89.83 save percentage. Brandon Mulligan was in the nets for the win against Delta, which saw its record fall to 6-5. New West is currently tied with Delta, both with 12 points, but with two games in hand.

Brandon Goodwin, with the gamewinner, stopped a third-period Delta rally with his second goal of the game late in the final frame. Matt MacGrotty also tallied his second of two goals late in the period to add the insurance marker. In PoCo, Daniel McQuade and Tyler Digby both scored twice and added three assists to lead the ’Bellies. McQuade got his pair in a two-minute span during an unanswered five-goal Salmonbellies’ middle period. Goodwin and Leif Mydske also counted a pair apiece for the New West club. The Salmonbellie juniors played Burnaby at home on Tuesday (after Record deadlines). New West plays the 10-0 Adanacs in Coquitlam today (Wednesday) in a much anticipated contest. The two teams met in the league opener back in May with the Adanacs enjoying a 9-4 win.

on another rag, firing a laser across his body from well out with just two seconds remaining in the period. The first overall draft pick got his hat trick goal early in the second period on a long screened shot from the right side. Crowley’s fourth was also a thing of beauty, beating Shibild down low fivehole, leaving the Burrard keeper shaking his head, as if to say, “I didn’t see it.” “He’s a big body and he attracts a lot of attention and shoots lights out,” said Zywicki, who was teamed with Crowley in the first game for both. “From what I’ve heard, he’s a special player and I’m excited to play with him.” Fans were equally excited about the prospect of seeing the 30-year-old Ottawa native ply his talents. Zywicki’s first goal of the game, which caught the inside of the far post made the score 6-1. He quickly registered his second of the game and started the final frame with his hat trick tally in the opening 30 seconds with a nifty cut to the net. “We had a little bit of a slow start, but after a while it was fun,” said Zywicki. “Our right side played well together.”

Zywicki has won three gold medals for Canada at world championships, including the 2006 field championships and the recent indoor title in the Czech Republic, but he has yet to sip out of the Mann Cup. “That is one of the big reasons I came here, to get a shot,” Zywicki said. “For me, if I’m on a new team I just go out and work hard and play my game, and find out what the other guys like doing, and work with them.” But, it was the defence that made it all possible, he added. “If our D plays like that game in and game out, we’re going to be tough to stay with.” On Saturday, Tyler Crompton got back in the lineup on the right side and made his presence felt, scoring the game-winning goal in overtime in an 8-7 win against the Thunder at the Langley Events Centre. Tyler Richards recorded the wins in both games. The Salmonbellies will be home to the Victoria Shamrocks this Thursday for the third annual Seats for Soldiers night at Queen’s Park Arena. Doors open at 6 p.m. Game starts at 7:45 p.m.

◗ TRACK AND FIELD

The future of track in Burnaby/ New West is up to the young BY TOM BERRIDGE SPORTS EDITOR tberridge@royalcityrecord.com

New Westminster ’s Damanpreet Rai leapt close to her personal best at the B.C. Secondary School’s track and field meet. Rai jumped 5.26 metres to win a fourth-place ribbon at the 45th annual event at Swangard Stadium Saturday. She also placed 11th in the triple jump. “I’m actually pretty happy. It’s not a bad start to the (summer club) season,” Rai said. “There are a lot of kids that come out (for NWSS) and they do try hard. They just have to do the best they can.” Hyack teammate Manisha Kandola had a leap of 1.55m to finish in sixth place in the girls’ high jump. Jennifer Lam of Burnaby North was 14th in the high jump and 15th in the long jump. New Westminster junior Natasha Lazecki was a second slower than her fourth-place qualifying

time and finished eighth in the 100m hurdles. Lazecki also attempted to qualify in 10th with Kamila RogicMcLean, Hannah Dixon and Amanda Zacharuk in the 4x400m. Lazecki won a second eighth-place ribbon in the triple jump. Simran Rai of New West was eighth in the girls’ 1,500m race walk. Justina Mayr of North placed 14th in the girls’ 400m. The Byrne Creek team of Sameer Aslami, Jerome Rosler, Kokil Pathmanathan and Alex Kim finished in 14th place in 4x400m relay qualifying. New Westminster ’s Jamie Wandell placed 13th in the shot. Up-and-comers in the district included Sophia Stevenson of Central, New Westminster ’s Mihailo Stefanovic, Ahmad Nizamani of South and St. Thomas More’s Malcolm Lee. Stevenson came from well in the pack to win her heat and earn a bronze

medal in the Grade 8 and 9 girls’ 800m. “Around the 200 mark I said, ‘I had to kick it’ if I wanted to win this race and I was shocked at how many people I passed,” said the Grade 8 Burnaby Strider club product. Stefanovic was runnerup in the boys’ 100m hurdles, dominated by district runners, including Bogdan Pavel of New West (fourth), Nizamani (fifth) and Hyack Ethan Strome, who was sixth. Strome also placed fifth in the boys’ 200m. Nizamani also leapt 6.02m to win a silver medal in the juvenile long jump. Lee placed fourth in the boys’ 100m sprint. Notre Dame’s Anthony DeLuca was fifth in the 400m. Strome said, more young athletes should get involved in track and field. “You need to get more people motivated to come out and try it. If you work at it, you can achieve great things,” he said.

STM: ‘It’s part of us,’ says young Knight ◗ continued from page 25

“I injured my ankle during the competition, but I was super happy with (the high jump),” said the University of B.C.-bound Ho. “I was excited. It is Grade 12 and my last opportunity. I was definitely ready from the start.” STM’s girl’s sprint relay team of Daniella Falcone, Aryanna Ebrahimzadeh, Rachel Shuttleworth and Paige Llewellyn just missed qualifying with a 10th-place finish in qualifying. Kamilla Wojchiewchowski was 10th in the girls’ shot put. Not lost in the final moments of the meet

were a handful of eager young Knights, who will likely have a lot to say when their time comes to make a mark for STM. The Knights Grade 8 and 9 4x400m relay team of Noah Usherwood, Darthe Capellan, Chase Malcolm and Jordan McKenzie won a bronze medal, while STM’s B team of Malcolm Lee, Romeo Panghulan, Rashaun Rivers and Giordano Baldonero cheered them on enthusiastically after winning its heat to place ninth overall. “It’s in us. It’s part of us,” said Rivers, who placed seventh in the boys’ 200m. “It’s natural. It’s part of being a Knight.”

Soccer: Should contend again next year ◗ continued from page 25

Zavarise added. Zavarise said STM played its best game in a 3-1 win over Pitt Meadows to win the pool. Katrina Abel, who had six goals in the tournament, scored once, while Tolusso and Sarah Hughes also tallied. The Knights opened the championships with Campbell posting a 3-0

shutout over Valleyview on Thursday. Abel scored all three goals for STM. Later in the day, STM outlasted 11th-hour standin Notre Dame 4-3, when the Prince George representative could not make the trip south. Abel led the Knights with two goals in a game STM never trailed. Tolusso and Samantha Drescher also scored.

do you have the best

The Knights lose just five players to graduation this year. But with three outstanding Grade 11 players expected back and as many as seven younger players who filled in ably at this year’s AA’s, Zavarise believes STM will again be able to contend for a championship berth. “The girls are already talking about next year,” he said.

Here's How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes.
