Neighbours protest group’s expansion Elizabeth Fry Society plans are stirring up opposition among Sapperton residents BY THERESA MCMANUS REPORTER tmcmanus@royalcityrecord.com
A controversial project being proposed in Sapperton is being reviewed by city staff at a time when neighbourhood opposition is growing. The Elizabeth Fry Society has applied to rezone 273 and 275 Sherbrooke St. so it can put up a new building that is four levels on the north half of the site (adjacent to the lane) and two levels on the south side of the site (adjacent to Kelly Street). The four-storey portion of the building would have a 37-space licensed child care on the ground floor, a multipurpose room on the second floor and offices of the Elizabeth Fry Society on the third and fourth floors, while the two-level portion of the building would contain 10 units of social housing to provide longterm, independent housing for women. Sapperton resident Catherine Cartwright said her primary concern is the encroachment of a commercial building into a residential neighbourhood. “There is development all around us. We are not against development per se,” she said. “A lot of development is good. It is starting to encroach on the neighbourhood.” Cartwright said area residents fear that the project could lead to more institutional development along Sherbrooke Street. She said she personally has no issues with the Elizabeth Fry Society. “I supported them coming into the community,” said Cartwright, whose company did the renovations to the Elizabeth Fry building. “As far as I know, they have been good citizens in the com-

to the official community plan be tabled. Council referred the letter to staff. The letter from the Elizabeth Fry Society was prompted by information presented by a representative of the Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation at the May 30 council meeting. The foundation member noted that hospital expansion would include construction of a new building on the land adjacent to the Elizabeth Fry property. “In light of this, we propose

Meet the class of 2011 It’s graduation time again. But who are the young men and women who are leaving New Westminster Secondary School this year to make their way in the world? The Record asked superintendent John Woudzia, principal Mary Bushman and vice-principal Kelly Boechler to help put together a list of graduating students who would make for interesting profiles. This year, Record photographer Larry Wright and reporter Alfie Lau sat down with five very interesting NWSS graduates who showed us that not only is the future very bright, the public education system is doing a fine job of producing upstanding young men and women. We were particularly impressed with the young lady who has a goal of building her own house – and as the only female student in the school’s carpentry program, she’s well on her way. We also met a young man stuck between cultures and his own dreams, so much so that he’s making the transition back to the name he was born with, rather than the catchy nickname he has been known by for most of his life. And we can’t forget about the aspiring writer who loves everything about the arts, the accomplished lacrosse goalie who knows his near future is on the Eastern seaboard of the United States, but his real future is back in the Royal City, and the soccer player who is willing to put sport on the backburner as she embarks on a nursing career. It’s easy in the journalism business to get jaded and cynical, but that never happens when you talk with young, hopeful 17- and 18year-old students who have the world at their feet. Thanks to Haley, Tiffany, Mohammad, Julian and Rocky for taking the time to sit down and be part of our series. And with that, here’s our New Westminster Secondary School Class of 2011. – Alfie Lau

Staged future: Mohammad, a.k.a. Moody, Abdul Fatah is a NWSS student who is determined to become an actor.
Pursuing his stage dreams Mohammad Abdul Fatah plans to balance studies with acting BY ALFIE LAU REPORTER alau@royalcityrecord.com
F
or almost all of his 17 years, Mohammad Abdul Fatah has been known as Moody Abdul. But with each day, the Grade 12 student at New Westminster Secondary School is gradually ditching his nickname in favour of his given name. “Moody is a child’s name,” said the former Lord Kelvin Elementary student. “I’m becoming an adult, and that means I should go by my (real) name.” Mohammad jokes that Moody was a name that fit him well – “I’d wake up and not know how I’d feel for the day” – but
as Mohammad, he’s already gotten a job at a local drugstore, and Mohammad is the name he will be known as professionally when he embarks on an acting career. “My passion for acting has been around since I was a child,” he said. “I remember watching shows like That ‘70s Show and Friends and thinking that’s what I want to be when I grow up.” The journey hasn’t been easy for Mohammad, as he has had to endure a tough family life along the way. In a short essay that he wrote prior to his interview with The Record, he explains his struggle to become an actor. “I had a dream and I had ambition, however, I had no support,” he writes. “My parents are divorced, and I lived with my father my whole life. He was the one who saw acting as
foolish and a waste of time. My mother, who I didn’t live with, supported me, but that wouldn’t help me sign any papers with any agencies.” Mohammad softens the story when he talks about father Nabil, mother Mariam and stepmother Sanaa. “My dad just wants me to have a secure job, and that’s understandable,” said the Lebanese-Canadian teenager. “I get frustrated watching some people who are actors who are just horrible, and you realize that acting is a business where if you have a look, but no talent, you’ll still get ahead of somebody who has talent but doesn’t have the look. … I think my dad sees that too, and he just wants me to get into a field that rewards talent and hard work.” To that end, Mohammad hopes to enrol in massage thera-
py or physiotherapy at Douglas College this autumn, but a bigger day comes on Nov. 10, when he turns 18 and can officially sign with an acting agency as an adult. Mohammad credits older brother Omar – currently studying criminology at Douglas – with helping him cope with their family situation. The two have gone back to visit their mother in Lebanon, and she even helped him buy his first car, a 1996 Honda Accord. “My mom is with me every minute,” said Mohammad as he points to his heart. “She’s always here in spirit, and she’s helped me in so many ways.” At the same time, Mohammad is appreciative of what his stepmother, Sanaa, has done for him. “She treats me like her own child,” said Mohammad. “I’m ◗Mohammad Page 4

Club legacy set in stone
Set in stone: Marge Ashdown, president of the Kiwanis Club of New Westminster; Darlene Smith, lieutenantgovernor for the Pacific Northwest; Dean Gibson, the city’s parks and recreation director; Alisa Tee, Miss Kiwanis New Westminster; and Mayor Wayne Wright at the new Kiwanis mosaic.
The Kiwanis Club of New Westminster’s connection to the outdoor swimming pool in Moody Park is written in stone. Back in 1948, the Kiwanis Club provided $45,000 that allowed the Kiwanis Pool to be built in Moody Park. The new Moody Park Outdoor Pool opened in 2009, replacing the aging Kiwanis Pool. On June 7, the Kiwanis Club unveiled a new mosaic commemorating the club’s connection to the former outdoor pool. Marge Ashdown, president of the Kiwanis Club of New Westminster, said the idea was to commemorate the group’s contribution to the former Kiwanis Pool. “I think they should be remembered,” she said. “In those days, that was a lot of money.” The mosaic, located near the main entrance to the Moody Park Outdoor Pool, is reminiscent of the K that appeared on the front of Kiwanis Pool. design and create. “It’s a big K for Kiwanis. Liz Calvin has done a beautiful job,” Ashdown said about the mosaic artist who created the piece. “It’s got the braiding around the big K itself.” Although the Kiwanis Club is no longer permitted to participate in major projects, it continues to raise funds for local initiatives such as the Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation. “Kiwanis is serving the
children of the world. I have asked that it be something for the children,” Ashdown said of funds donated to the hospital foundation. “I believe the world starts in New Westminster.” The Kiwanis Club of New Westminster meets for lunch at Boston Pizza on the first and third Tuesday of every month, and new members are welcome. glad that my dad found somebody after my mom.” A turning point for Mohammad came this spring when he performed as Vince Fontaine in the high school production of Grease. “It was so much fun working with so many talented people,” he said. “I really enjoyed my time on Grease.” Mohammad said the fun even extended to a scene when things went awry. “We’re supposed to push a car around when the tarp ripped unexpectedly,” he said. “We just played along that that was what was supposed to happen because you can’t ruin the illusion of acting.” Acting is a bug Mohammad won’t be getting rid of any time soon. “He’s already looking into what steps he would need to do, like getting head shots, like talking to some of the kids who have already signed with an agent,” said Mohammad’s drama teacher Frances Monteleone. “I’m really proud of how far he’s come since I started teaching him in Grade 8. … He’s grown so much as a performer.” Monteleone said Mohammad has confided in her about his struggle to
balance acting with a secure job. “I know his number 1 priority is to create a good life for himself, whether that be in physiotherapy or in acting,” she said. “What I told him is that he has changed so much since I first started teaching him, and a lot of those changes have been good. … I’ve seen him mature, I’ve seen him start to view himself in a different light. He’s starting to realize the difference between high school and the real world. … All of that is a maturity you don’t see in many students, so I’d love to see him continue to grow in that way.” Monteleone gets emotional when she talks about Mohammad. She cites two examples of how close she has become with her student. “On the closing night of Grease, the entire cast signed a photo for me,” she said. “For some reason, my eyes went right to what (Mohammad) wrote, and it was so touching that I cried in front of the entire class.” The second instance came when Mohammad came in as a peer tutor for younger drama students. “In my seven years at the school, he’s the best peer tutor I’ve ever had,” she said. “The way he works

with kids, the way he establishes a rapport with them, you can see that acting is something he cares deeply about and has worked hard at.” Mohammad has nothing but praise for Monteleone. “She’s just a really caring individual who listens to everything I have to say,” he said. “I’ve learned so much from her.” For the future, Mohammad is mature beyond his years, especially when you consider what his parting words in his essay about himself are. In fact, his maturity is on full display, and there probably isn’t a better way to end this chapter of Mohammad’s story. “I learned a lot in the six or so months it took to wrap up Grease,” he writes. “I didn’t just learn about acting, I learnt that everyone is different and we have to respect the way people choose to be. Judging others on their decisions only shows how insecure one is about their own. “I learned how to be constructive rather than negative. “I learned how to be supportive rather than neglectful. “And, most importantly, I learned how to be respectful and responsible.” www.twitter.com/AlfieLau

City police officer avoids jail for assault BY BRENT RICHTER REPORTER brichter@royalcityrecord.com
New Westminster Police Const. Jeffrey Klassen will not serve any jail time following his sentencing for a 2009 booze-fuelled assault on a late-night delivery driver. Judge Jodie Werier handed down a sentence of one year’s probation and 100 hours of community service in Vancouver Provincial Court on Friday. It was a conditional sentence, meaning that if Klassen completes his probation, the conviction will not stay on his permanent record. Klassen and two other off-duty officers from West Vancouver and Delta were drinking in downtown Vancouver on Jan. 21, 2009 when West Vancouver Const. Griffin Gillan got into a fight with newspaper delivery driver Firoz Khan at the Hyatt Regency Hotel on Burrard Street, around 2:30 a.m. Klassen arrived at the skirmish shortly after and pounced on Khan, hit him repeatedly in the shoulder, identified himself as a police officer and attempted to arrest him. OUR VIEW
When the Canucks lost in ‘94, hordes of fans filled the downtown streets. Most of them were celebrating, happy and having fun. Sure, we’d lost the Cup, but look how far the team had come. They’d played a good, strong series, and most fans were still as proud of them coming out of Game 7 as they were going in. But a few – as is so often the case – used the crowds, the chaos and the amped-up emotion to cause trouble. The “Stanley Cup Riot” was known around the world (it even has its own

Surely in the span of 17 years, which have included a successful hosting of the 2010 Winter Olympics, we’ve learned a thing or two about hometown pride. Win or lose, the Canucks have come a long way this year – let’s close out the season with a good, safe, fun celebration that we can all be proud of, no matter what the final score is.
Libs not the first to play with taxes IN THE HOUSE KEITH BALDREY
P
oliticians are rightly doubted when it comes to tax promises, so it’s understandable why there is considerable skepticism over the B.C. Liberal government’s promise to cut the HST to 10 per cent by 2014. After all, our political landscape is littered with all kinds of broken promises over taxation. And no political party has clean hands when it comes to sticking to its positions on taxes. So why should Premier Christy Clark’s government be any different than its predecessors? After all, financial and political considerations end up shaping our tax policies, no matter who is running government. And circumstances can change so quickly that they can have an immediate impact on taxes, since that is a government’s main source of revenues. This is how we ended up with the HST, remember. The worldwide economic recession blew a huge hole in the B.C. government’s revenues almost overnight, and so when Ottawa came calling with a $1.6-billion “incentive” to implement the
HST, the Campbell government lunged at the cash. Clark’s proposed two-point cut in the HST will cost her government about $1.6 billion in lost revenue when it is implemented in 2014. That will be somewhat offset by more than $600 million in corporate tax hikes or deferred tax reductions for small businesses. But it still works out to about a $1-billion hit, effectively wiping out a projected budget surplus in 2014. On the other side of the ledger, her government is insisting it can keep spending increases to less than two per cent a year. Oh, really? In the four years before the 2008 recession, the annual spending increase in the government budget was 5.7 per cent. In the two years since then, spending increased an average of 3.5 per cent annually, but this was after all kinds of cuts to programs and services. So to get spending down even further will presumably require more cuts (and it will also mean no wage hikes for public sector workers, including teachers). When one factors in the insatiable health-care system – which gobbles money at a rate of almost five per cent more each year – the challenge to stick to budget projections becomes even tougher. Add it all up, and it seems
Let’s fix the HST mess
Dear Editor:
It’s very hard for me to accept that substantial numbers of “ordinary” British Columbians believe the HST would be good for them. The issue is neither complex nor difficult to understand: The B.C. government and senior management of B.C.’s major corporations want the HST. These corporations want it because it drops some of their tax burden onto the shoulders of the “ordinary” taxpayer-consumers who already pay most of the bills. The B.C. Liberal government wants it because it is one of those handy revenue sources known as cash cows. Keeping the tax would also save face for the ruling politicians. No one can truthfully deny that keeping the ◗HST Page 7 HST will increase the tax burden of the B.C. public,
because it applies to many items previously tax-free. So the politicians have clouded the issue with complications such as a set of rebates and “transition cheques,” the promise of a gradual lessening of the HST rate over the next three years, and parroting the threadbare fable about the trickledown effect of corporate tax breaks. This little $7-million morality play is being presented to the public with the public’s own money, orchestrated by the same foxy politicians who lied through their teeth while shoving the HST down our throats to begin with. Such questions as the cost of administering all the rebate payments and transition cheques are just not discussed. The HST apologists, like our political leaders, place no value whatever on such minor items as principles and ethics. Money and power trump everything. the people also remains buried; it’s the promise of some cash reward, however unlikely, that draws the headlines as the gap between rich and poor grows ever wider in a wacky reverse-Robin Hood scenario. Stop pursuing power
Dear Editor:
An open letter to our members of Parliament: “Regime change” used to be illegal. The CIA did it secretly for decades. Now it’s OK to bomb another country to get rid of a leader not to the liking of the powerful. The claim of humanitarian intervention covers up the reality: thousands of tons
of bombs, explosives, have traumatized the population and decimated their infrastructure. It likewise tries to cover up the fact that all American wars are about oil, and Libya has the lightest, sweetest crude left on the planet, along with a leader who dares defy the U.S., Britain and France. Canada must refuse to support NATO’s illegal war against Libya any further. Unfortunately the “Harper government” will vote to continue, likely supported by Liberals. Under the warmonger Harper, now with his deadly majority, Canada’s military culture will soon take over the life of our nation, as it has in the U.S. The NDP Opposition must speak clearly against any further participation in American and NATO terrorism. If the party is still disinclined to take a politically risky stand – in this fear and war-hyped world – for peace and international law, at the very least they must allow their MPs a free vote of conscience on every war decision. As former president Eisenhower said, in today’s world security comes from the control of power, not the pursuit of power. Hilda Bechler, New Westminster

transfer tax, which adds almost $10,000 to a house that costs a little more than $525,000 (a tax hit, by the way, that dwarfs the financial impact most people will experience with the HST). The tax has become lucrative to governments – it provides more than $800 million a year – but is hurtful to homebuyers and makes already expensive homes even costlier. Here’s the parallel to the HST: the tax was introduced just after the 1986 election campaign, during which the Socreds never breathed a word of the hit they were about to unleash on homebuyers. And here’s the irony: The premier who brought in the property transfer tax was none other than Bill Vander Zalm, who is leading the Fight HST group. You can’t make this stuff up! ’Bellies banner gets OK
Visitors to Queen’s Park Arena will have little doubt about the team that holds court inside the building. New Westminster city council has given its support in principle to a request from the Salmonbellies Lacrosse Club to install a seasonal banner at the front entrance to the arena. The city will cover the cost of the annual installation of the banner, which would be displayed from mid-April until mid-September each year. A city staff report notes that the New Westminster Senior Salmonbellies asked that the city create and install the large banner to recognize the close relationship between the Salmonbellies lacrosse orga-

nizations (minor and senior) and the city, and to help promote a sense of community spirit and pride for visitors to Queen’s Park Arena. Staff supported the display of a Salmonbellies banner on the front façade of Queen’s Park Arena even though it may set a precedent for other city facilities and user groups. Dan Richardson, president and general manager of the New Westminster Senior Salmonbellies, said the team has been working with the junior and minor teams to help convey the longstanding history of the Salmonbellies. He said the banner could be up within the next couple of weeks.

Elizabeth Fry: Residents present petition opposing plans
City helps market
The City of New Westminster is continuing its practice of waiving city fees for the Royal City Farmers Market Association. Council has approved a staff recommendation not to charge the association for a street occupancy permit for using city hall’s Fourth Street parking lot next to Tipperary Park for its 2011 season. In addition, the association and market vendors will not be required to obtain business licences A city staff report says the arrangements have been standard practice and haven’t created any concern for the city.
for redevelopment of the Royal Columbian Hospital site, as well as other sites in Sapperton. He moved from Vancouver to Sapperton in 1994, in part to get away from the redevelopment of some of its residential neighbourhoods. “It’s not Elizabeth Fry,” he said about his opposition to the plan. “Our neighbourhood is very small as it is. We like the neighbourliness of it.” Rather than acting as a buffer to Royal Columbian Hospital, he thinks the project would have a negative impact on the neighbourhood and could lead to more commercial development along that side of
Sherbrooke Street. He said there are lots available on East Columbia Street that would be more suited to the society’s proposal and more appropriate for an institutional use than a single-family neighbourhood. “I don’t see how that helps homeowners to have a big office building beside them,” he said. In January, the Elizabeth Fry Society held community meetings to get feedback for its proposed development. The non-profit society, which moved into its existing Sapperton location 15 years ago, provides a variety of support services to women and children. The project would allow

people if that was the city’s plan for Sherbrooke Street. “Right now the community plan looks at it as a single-family residential area,” he said of the surrounding neighbourhood. Residents’ fears may have been fanned after reading comments made by the city’s advisory planning commission, which is an advisory committee to city council that’s composed of local residents and business people. A report noted that comments from commission members included “support change to OCP for the whole band of properties” and “suggest zoning all commercial in that area.”

council on May 30 stated that the city had received 59 emails and letters about the application, with 52 supporting the proposed development and seven opposing. The city had also received a petition signed by seven people who are concerned about the introduction of commercial uses into a residential neighbourhood and the potential traffic and parking impacts on the immediate neighbourhood. Cartwright said she was “stunned” to see how the feedback about the proposal had been interpreted, as it is “entirely misrepresentative” of the support (or lack thereof) in the neighbourhood. About 40 residents opposed to the project attended the May 30 council meeting. “We presented a 143signature petition against it,” she said. “Those were only the ones we got to.” Cartwright said opposition to the proposal is growing as more lower Sapperton residents learn of the rezoning and official community plan amendment applications. City staff believe that the proposed development satisfies a number of city initiatives related to child care, non-profit housing and the retention of employment in the city. “The proposed land use will also provide a buffer between the increasing development and activity proposed for the Royal Columbian Hospital in the future,” said a staff report. “Current concepts for the hospital site would see an increase in the activities and development on the north side of the site.” Area resident Jerry Sommers said residents are aware of the potential

Residents of New Westminster may find a census taker knocking on their doors in the coming weeks as Statistics Canada is looking to bring in uncompleted forms. “We just want to remind people that we are sending enumerators on the ground only to households that have not returned their questionnaire,” said Peter Liang, communications officer for Statistics Canada. “You can either hand in your completed questionnaire to them or if you’re not done it, they can provide assistance in terms of completing this very important task.” Liang said census-takers may show up between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. on weekdays and weekends to collect the remaining forms, which each household must, by law, complete. “They will make several attempts to make sure they can get a hold of you. They shouldn’t show up in the wee hours of the day. They will certainly show up on evenings and weekends,” he said. For those with language difficulties, Statistics Canada offers a help line at 1-877-777-2011. Those who fail to return a completed census may face penalties, but that is always a last resort, Liang said. “Statistics Canada is in the business of data collection. We’re not interested in imposing penalties on people, but when we’ve made every reasonable attempt and a household still refuses to do it, we’ll refer that case to the public prosecution service of Canada and the decision of what to do then rests exclusively with that agency,” he said. Households that fail to complete the census may be subject to a fine of up to $500. Data collected in the census is used for planning education, public transit, health services, police and fire protection, transfer payments between all three levels of government and the allocation of seats in Parliament. “Every person counts,” Liang said. “It’s not too late if you’re not done it. We are out there trying to get completed census forms.”

New Westminster’s Honour House hosted a ceremony Thursday morning to dedicate a stretch of the TransCanada Highway between Langley and Abbotsford as a “Highway of Heroes” in memory of B.C’s 13th Canadian Forces members who lost their lives in Afghanistan. The ceremony will also honour the families of the soldiers who have received Memorial Silver Crosses. The official dedication ceremony was held Thursday morning at Honour House at 509 St. George St. The dedication of the stretch of highway comes four years after a similar stretch on Highway 401 in Toronto was also designated as a Highway of Heroes. The Ubique Unit of the 3rd Canadian Army Veteran Motorcycle Units, a group of veterans and supporters that ride motorcycles and support communities, set a goal last year to see that a Highway of Heroes was also dedicated in Western Canada. “It is important to salute the sacrifices of the fallen men and women who have given their lives in Afghanistan and honour the Silver Cross Families they have left behind,” Barry Drews, vice-president of 3rd CAV Ubique Unit, said in a press release. “We have 13 Silver Cross Families in B.C. alone, and having a Highway of Heroes on each coast is necessary to recognize the contributions of the fallen and the great loss to our country.” Honour House is a home away from home for Canadian Forces members, first responders and their families while they are receiving medical treatment in the Metro Vancouver area. While the facility had a grand opening ceremony last November, it is still being worked on and isn’t expected to be fully open until later this year. “The Honour House Society is extremely grateful that the 3rd CAV has chosen to donate the proceeds of this event to our organization,” Allan De Genova, president of the Honour House Society, said in a press release. “It is important that we are able to help and honour the heroes who serve and have served our country, as well as their families. This is the ultimate goal of Honour House.” www.twitter.com/AlfieLau

Mark your arts calendars
A few “save the date” moments for you today, courtesy of Twitter. Among the highlights from local arts tweeters over the past week or so: ◗ From New West Cultural Crawl (@nwculturalcrawl), a note that it’s “Drag ‘n’ Draw” night on June 18 at the Heritage Grill. “Bring a pencil and draw, sketch, paint the best drag queen models ever,” they say. It starts at 7 p.m. ◗ From the Arts Council of New Westminter (@ artsnewwest), a note that June 27 is the next Last Mondays at the Movies showing at the Massey Theatre. This month it’s The Bang Bang Club. It’s $9. Tickets at 604-521-5050 or buy at the door. The screening starts at 7:30. ◗ Also from @artsnew west, a reminder to mark Saturday, June 18 on your calendars – it’s a free event for families in Moody Park
from noon to 3 p.m. Email info@artscouncilnewwest. org for more details.
Market events
It’s summer! Well, almost. And River Market is helping people get into the spirit of the season with its Patio Summerfest events on weekends through June and July. The summer events run Saturdays through June and July. Upcoming shops will be on hand to present their offerings to visitors: wild seafood and fish ‘n’ chips from The Crab Shop; gelato, espresso and cappuccino from Tre Galli Gelato Boardwalk Caffe; European-style breads and pastries from Pamola Bakery and Deli; modern Chinese food from Wild Rice Too; and plants from KJM Urban Gardens. And don’t forget that River Market is holding its Royally Crafty markets on the first Saturday of every month. Actually, the next one’s on a Friday – July 1, to coincide with Canada Day – but after that, the markets continue on Aug. 6, Sept. 3, Oct. 1, Nov. 5 and Dec. 3. Visitors can enjoy
locally produced jewelry, art, items for the home and more. River Market, of course, is on the waterfront at 810 Quayside Dr. Check out their website at www.rivermarket.ca for details.
Calling art lovers
Calling all artists and art lovers. The Arts Council of New Westminster is looking for artists to take part in upcoming exhibitions. (I bring you this news courtesy of the arts council’s Facebook page, which I’ve become quite hooked on following! If you haven’t, you should – find them by searching Arts Council New West.) But I digress. Back to the point. Artists are being invited to apply for exhibitions at the arts council gallery in Queen’s Park, as well as satellite galleries, for the year 2012. Interested artists can pick up a brochure at the arts council gallery in Centennial Lodge. The next deadline for entries is Sept. 31. Do you have an item for Lively City? Send details to Julie by emailing jmaclellan@ royalcityrecord.com.

For nearly eight decades, cycling enthusiasts and die-hard riders have relied on the expertise and wide selection of bicycles and accessories from the experts - Cap’s Bicycle Shop. Established in 1932, the bicycle shop is the oldest family-owned and operated shop in the Lower Mainland, offering full year round bicycle sales and service. “We specialize in bicycles and have models to suit any rider,” says owner Gordon Hobbis. The store carries everything from beach cruisers to road racers, to kids’ bikes, mountain bikes, folding bikes and electric assist bikes. “There is also a wide selection of cycling specific clothing, shoes, helmets and accessories as well,” says Gordon. Now more than ever, people are getting out of their cars and commuting by bicycle. Whether it’s for fitness, fun or going green, riding a bike is trendy in more ways than one. “Riding to work or for errands is a great way to save money on gas and is good for the planet,” says Gordon. “Most trips of five km or less can be done as fast on a bike as in a car.” Folding bikes have become increasingly popular for those who live in condos or have limited storage space, as well as for those wanting to combine cycling with transit. “Ride a bike to SkyTrain, fold it and go… Any station, any train, any time with a folding bike,” he adds. When Cap Hobbis sold his first bike in 1932 and opened the store in Sapperton New Westminster in 1940, he couldn’t have known the legacy he would leave behind. Its tremendous success and longevity can be attributed to a number of factors, says Gordon. “It’s the place to trust for your bicycle needs,” he says. “Quality products, knowledgeable staff and a commitment to our customers’ satisfaction has always been at the core of Cap’s Bicycle Shop.” Cap’s is more than just bicycles. They believe in corporate social responsibility, be it donations or by participation. The company is involved in a number on nonprofit organizations, including the New Westminster Police Soccer School, New Westminster Fire Department Hockey Game, sponsorship of two teams on the Ride to Conquer Cancer, as well as the Royal City Rotary Club. “Eight years ago Cap’s re-established the Sapperton Street Festival, which has grown to attract more than 10,000 to East Columbia Street,” Gordon says. “This fundraising event helps build community in Sapperton and provides the business along East Columbia with valuable exposure to future customers. The event raises money for the Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation and over the years in excess of $40, 000 has been raised.” Let the friendly, knowledgeable staff at Cap’s Bicycle Shop help you choose the best bicycle for your riding needs. Gordon and his professionally trained staff look forward to welcoming you at Cap’s Bicycle Shop, 434a East Columbia St. New Westminster. For more information, call 604-524-3611 or visit them online at www.capsbicycleshop.com.

ove changes over time. Though we each have a fairly stable concept of who we are and often an even more rigid conception of our partners, we continue to grow as individuals. We can grow together, or we can grow apart. This catches us by surprise. When we’re caught up in our daily activities – work, school, raising a family and managing a household – or distracted by crisis after crisis, we may fail to attend to our primary relationship. We take it – and one another – for granted. In the early romantic phase of relationships, we can succumb to infatuation. Falling in love is like a psychosis. We can do bold and silly things we would not otherwise consider. We are focused on the positive aspects of the person we love, and if we see any negatives at all, they may appear insignificant or even cute and endearing. Eventually, reality prevails.
have to take a step back – remember how we once felt (and thought about our partner) and look at the reality of the present from that perspective. We also need to accept our part of the responsibility for caring for our relationship, communicating our feelings and needs, and asking and listening for our partner’s deepest thoughts. Hyacks hold the line in Blaine BY TOM BERRIDGE SPORTS EDITOR tberridge@royalcityrecord.com
The New Westminster Hyacks came back from a spring training scrimmage in Blaine, Washington with more than a draw. The varsity high school football team tied Blaine 28-28 in the controlled scrimmage last weekend, but more importantly are ahead of the curve in preparation for the fall season, said Hyacks head coach Farhan Lalji. “We have 13 to 14 legitimate linemen, who can play. We moved the ball and we tackled better,” Lalji said. Quarterback Regan Eberding, Eric Teng and Frankie Dema, with two scores with the second unit, scored touchdowns for New Westminster. But more importantly for Lalji was the play of linemen Michael Desjarlais, Mikah Jacobs and Arjun Venkatesh, who have been pushed into starting roles. Jonathan He, Jeremy Wilson,
Yahia Gomaa and defensive tackle Patryck Gaviola, who could play himself into the starting rotation, also showed a lot of promise along the defensive line. Team captain Makoto Brennen looked comfortable in the middle linebacker position, while the athletic Eberding, the offensive team captain, will likely be taking more snaps from the shotgun this season to add more of a threat to run or throw. “We’re really optimistic,” Lalji added. The junior varsity squad also gave room for optimism following a midweek scrimmage with Terry Fox and Holy Cross at Burnaby Lake Sports Complex-West last Thursday. James Nicholas had a nice touchdown run for the Hyack JVs in the controlled scrimmage. Julian Ramirez, Stewart Summerfeld, Harper Sherman and linebacker/guard Prabh Bal have the 48-player New Westminster JV squad far ahead of its development over last season, said Lalji.
“The best thing for us is defensively we’re going to be significantly better than last year,” he added. This weekend, the Hyacks will play host to their annual 7-on-7 Passing Challenge tournament at Mercer Stadium. Twelve B.C. high school teams and four from Washington State, including Shelton and Nooksack Valley will test their offensive passing schemes against the defences. The competition runs all day Saturday and Sunday at Mercer. The New Westminster program will also be busy preparing for its team camp in Oregon from July 4 to 8. The following month, the Hyacks will pack their bags for Southern California and full week of practice, culminating in a scrimmage against local school Citrus Valley in Redlands, just east of Los Angeles and Anaheim. The trip will also include a chance to watch a University of Southern California exhibition game.

◗ JUNIOR A LACROSSE Water show: Nicole Gingrich performs a solo routine at C.G. Brown Pool, where the Burnaby Caprice Synchronized Swimming Club held its yearend show Saturday.
Jr. ’Bellies move into second place The New Westminster Salmonbellies pulled into a second-place tie with the Victoria Shamrocks following an 11-7 win over the Langley Thunder on Sunday. New Westminster jumped out to a 5-0 first-period lead at the the Langley Events Centre, scoring on 30 per cent of its shots fired at the Thunder’s starting keeper Ryley Brown. Mark Negrin, Brandon Goodwin, Daniel McQuade, Tyler Digby and Saskatchewan native Reagan Harding, with his first B.C. Junior Lacrossse League goal, all scored in the opening 20 minutes of play. Frankie Scigliano, in his first start back off injury, made 33 saves, including 12 in the first stanza to post the win for the junior ’Bellies.
Digby scored three more times in the game, while Goodwin registered a hat trick, with two more tallies in the final frame. McQuade led the Salmonbellies with a six-point night, including a pair of scores. Reegan Comeault also scored twice and added four assists for the Thunder, who outscored New Westminster 7-6 over the final two periods. The win avenged a 7-6 loss to Langley at home just two weeks earlier. With the victory, New Westminster improved its record to 8-4, eight points back of the first-place Coquitlam Adanacs at the half-way mark of the season. The two teams met again Tuesday at Queen’s Park (after Record deadlines).

Hawksbee said, he and the Salmonbellie players have come to understand a lot more clearly just how big a contribution the Canadian military and the New
