◗ STANLEY CUP RIOTS

Kindness out of chaos

Kindness Flag Project hits an unexpected chord in the aftermath of the riot BY JENNIFER MOREAU REPORTER jmoreau@royalcityrecord.com

When Ingrid Tamboline watched the Stanley Cup riot break out last Wednesday from her home in New Westminster, she felt fear, shock, disgust and confusion. “I couldn’t understand why anyone would do that,” she said. “I was angry, I was really angry.” In the aftermath, Tamboline wanted to help, but most of the cleaning had been done already, so she came up with a different idea – one that strung together the cathartic expressions of people recovering from a riot. Inspired by a Museum ofAnthropology initiative from the Dalai Lama’s 2004 Vancouver visit, Tamboline gathered brushes, paints and scraps of fabric, and headed downtown the day after. She set up what’s now called the Kindness Flag Project, where people are encouraged to paint their post-riot sentiments on scraps of fabric, which then get strung up through all the areas trashed in the riots. “I wanted to do something that everyone felt comfortable doing,” Tamboline said. “When I was cutting the flags, I was thinking … it’s a symbol of territory, it’s a symbol of identity. When it flutters, it sort of reminds you of something, it’s a mnemonic device. These messages would be teased away in the wind.” Tamboline expected about 20 or 30 people would be interested in painting flags. She was shocked by the overwhelming response. “All of a sudden, it was like a magnet. I had people saying, ‘What is this? What are you doing? Can I do one?’” she recalled.

THE CLASS OF 2011: TIFFANY BUCHWALD

Larry Wright/THE RECORD

Career path: Tiffany Buchwald, a 17-year-old Queensborough resident, is the only female student in the Ace-It carpentry program at New Westminster Secondary School. She plans to pursue her full Red Seal certification after her graduation from NWSS.

Building a future in carpentry BY ALFIE LAU REPORTER alau@royalcityrecord.com

Tiffany Buchwald isn’t your typical 17year-old Queensborough resident. Instead of thinking about what makeup she’ll be wearing or what she needs for grad, Tiffany is thinking about roofs, portable tools and what type of house she hopes to build for herself in the future. Tiffany is the only female student of the 16 in the school’s Ace-It carpentry program, and she’s keen on the opportunities that will be in front of her once she graduates. “I know that if I continue in the trades, I’ll always be able to get a job,” she said. “I actually started out in plumbing, but midway through Grade 11, I decided I wanted to do framing and carpentry instead.

“My dream is to build my own house.” Tiffany has gotten a lot of support from her carpentry classmates and teacher Ian Walker, and the teamwork the class has shown is best exemplified in how they had to put together their new workspace after the school district bought two shipping containers. “We had to put a wall at the back, and we had to make it into our workplace,” said Tiffany. “The only bad thing is we’re putting it all together, and I’m graduating, so I won’t even get to use it next year.” Tiffany is nothing if not realistic about what her future career path is. “After I graduate, it will probably take me about four years to get my full Red Seal certification,” she said. “I’ll have to go to BCIT to take a course, and I have to start doing my 1,500 hours of (work expe-

rience), and that’s going to take anywhere from seven months to a year. “I think it’s a pretty good investment in myself that I can spend about $4,000 to get my education, and when I’m done, I can be making $80,000 a year.” Tiffany’s parents, Stephanie and David, are doing their best to make things work, especially with another child, six-year-old Brandon, in their Queensborough home. And at a time when young ladies are dreaming of $300 dresses, Tiffany is thinking about what $300 would buy for her tool kit. “I think I really want a Skil saw,” she said. “You can get one on Craigslist for about $80, but a good one is $300,” she said. “I know I have to start building my tool kit, but I’m going to make sure I get the right tools that will last.”

Tiffany has also enjoyed her time in the regular classroom, giving credit to English teacher Robyn Speed for inspiring her. “She’s really charismatic, and she’s shown me how you have to be passionate in everything you do,” said Tiffany. Science teacher Axel Krause has also been someone who’s taught Tiffany a lot. “I was taking Biology 11 and 12 and learning about plant life and trees, and it didn’t mean much to me, until I started realizing that how trees grow affect what type of wood I would be using (as a carpenter),” she said. “Then it was really cool because it all sorta made sense to me.” Another side of Tiffany comes out when she talks about her younger brother. “It was weird at first because there’s 12 ◗Student Page 8

Wood recycling plant trying to reduce dust Recycling company should have plan to fix problems by end of the month BY THERESA MCMANUS REPORTER tmcmanus@royalcityrecord.com

Urban Wood Waste Recyclers expects to have a better handle on how it will tackle dust concerns and issues voiced by city hall by the end of June. Urban Wood Waste Recyclers, a division of Harvest Power, accepts construction and demolition waste materials and processes them for recycling. After company officials sought city council’s support for a grant application to expand the local recycling operation, city staff learned about a number of concerns about the storing and sorting of recycled materials, work done without building permits and the need for a new business licence. The city also learned about the ongoing dust being generated at the recycling plant. “I am pleased how far we have come in a short time,” said Mike Fournier, regional vice-president of Harvest Power. “Most of that is around communication with our neighbours.” Fournier said he’s met with the company’s neighbours and shared information from the city about the issues raised at the recycling operation. He said neighbours seem to be in agreement that dealing with the dust issue is the priority. Metro Vancouver issued Urban Wood Waste Recyclers a pollution prevention order in 2010, requiring it to make some improvements to control dust from the

site. Harvest Power has had three consulting firms on site; all three will be providing proposals for solutions to address dust issues by the end of June. By the end of the month, the company expects to come up with a workable plan for resolving the dust issues. While the issues won’t be resolved immediately, Fournier said Harvest Power will select which company it will work with to address the issue. “The message from them is loud and clear,” he said about neighbours’ appeals to deal with the dust. “They appreciate being part of it. They weren’t before.” Harvest Power bought Urban Wood Waste Recyclers in September 2010 and aims to be “open and transparent” about its plans. Officials from Metro Vancouver and city hall recently did a detailed site inspection at Urban Wood Waste Recyclers. The city later provided the company with a list of all outstanding city requirements and a compliance plan. Keith Coueffin, the city’s manager of licensing and integrated services, said staff met with company officials and outlined in detail all the issues that need to be resolved with respect to zoning regulations, plumbing permits and building permits, and the need for a development permit for uses on the site. “They are working on a plan to address those issues and will be providing that to us within a fairly short time,” he said. City officials also reinforced that the city is “very concerned” about dust problems at the site. “They have been made aware of all of the issues,” Coueffin said. “They will be

Metro Vancouver officials toured the recycling plant at the same time that city staff did their site investigations. “I’ll give the city some marks,” Fournier said of the city’s response. “They prioritized knowing you can’t do everything overnight.”

By the end of the month, Fournier said the company will have a plan in place detailing how it will address the city’s concerns. While it’s important to address the city’s issues, he said the company wants to convince its neighbours that it can “walk the walk” and improve its operations. Fournier said he wasn’t surprised with any of the items on the list. He believes many of the issues related to “lacking” paperwork. “The issues that the city put forward are manageable,” he said.

You can vote Yes to “extinguish” (kill, drop, end, remove, dump… replace most eligible voters in the province are with your own euphemism, if you wish) expected to receive them by June 24.

OUR VIEW

Those who don’t get their ballots by then need to get in touch with Elections B.C. by July 8. The only tough part: marked ballots need to be back to Elections B.C. by July 22, whether or not there is a postal strike. The hardest part of it all is trying to understand potential impacts of extinguishing or not extinguishing the HST – far more difficult than the actual referendum question itself. The government has had nearly a year to explain, and it still hasn’t done so sufficiently. Premier

Christy Clark’s eleventh-hour manipulations to convince taxpayers to vote “No” have served to make it still more difficult to calculate ramifications. And has Opposition leader Adrian Dix got a hidden agenda for the PST? Or is that more B.C. Liberal hype? It’s expected to take weeks to count the referendum ballots – results aren’t expected to be announced before Aug. 11. Here’s hoping the results are as confusing as the question – and not as confusing as the politicians have made it.

Riots leave behind political impacts, too IN THE HOUSE KEITH BALDREY

T

he huge public outpouring of rage in response to the Vancouver riot may shake things up in a number of areas – not the least of which is the political arena. Two politicians in particular have been front and centre in response to the riot, and the popularity and credibility of each of them may be impacted in different ways. Premier Christy Clark was quick to correctly gauge the public mood when she warned the rioters they would be pursued and prosecuted. Sounding like a marshal from the Wild West, she sent her you-can-run-butyou-can’t-hide message in blunt, even threatening fashion. In any other situation, her aggressive insistence on laying charges and seeking jail sentences may have seemed a bit intrusive to the criminal justice system. It’s also fair to wonder whether her call on the public to help in the hunt of those responsible injected an element of vigilantism into the situation. But given the widespread revulsion towards the antics of the rioters (or, as they are now more commonly called, “losers”

or “jerks” or “morons”) I don’t think anyone is going to go after the premier on this one. However, her demand that justice be swiftly handed out also served as a timely reminder of some of the problems that exist in the justice system, and how many of them can be laid at the feet of her government. Just days before the riot, several serious criminal trials were delayed because judges say there aren’t enough sheriffs to guarantee safety in the courtrooms. The attorney general’s ministry has failed to fund more than 30 sheriff positions, even though the people who would get those jobs already have the necessary training. This gave NDP leader Adrian Dix the perfect opening to demand restored funding for sheriffs. The contradiction between the premier demanding a whole bunch of new prosecutions at the same time her government is being accused of frustrating justice being carried out was readily apparent. The premier has now set the bar quite high. She has demanded prosecutions for charges that most likely will turn out to be a bunch of break-and-enters and mischief counts, but if funding problems allow a murder trial to go sideways she may find that being a tough law-and-order premier demands some consistency. Throw in the fact that our jails are already overcrowded

Extraordinary lengths for HST Dear Editor:

As the B.C. Liberals and the biggest corporations grow increasingly desperate to ram through the HST scheme, their totally one-sided, hard-sell ad campaign has sunk to the lowest possible level – treating British Columbians as if we are just plain stupid. Just check out the exercise in arrogance and contempt on page 10 of the June 17 Record: In a half-page ad (paid for, without option, by us taxpayers), the referendum question is expanded: “To lower the HST from 12 per cent to 10 per cent, vote NO. To bring back the GST and PST at 12 per cent, vote YES.” Oh, please. We know that even if the CampbellClark government actually honours its commitment this time, it will take three years to lower the HST. We know that the real referendum exists because ◗Riot Page 7 the government lied about foisting it on us, because

it transfers taxation from big business to the public, and a majority of us ordinary folk don’t want it. But the final insult added to financial injury is the assumption that we are too stupid to see that the HST, even if lowered to 10 per cent eventually, will still increase the taxpayers’ burden because it will be applied to a much wider range of goods and services. Tell us, Ms. Clark, which adds up to more: 12 per cent of $1,000 or 10 per cent of $1,500? Why else are the biggest corporations and their political friends going to such extraordinary lengths to get this cash cow into the barn? Tony Eberts, New Westminster

Dear Editor:

opposed to the Elizabeth Fry expansion truly has “no issues” with the society (re: Silken wrapper not so nice, Letters to the Editor, The Record, June 17). It claims that their opposition is to the encroachment of commercial business into the residential neighbourhood, remarking that if it was a Shopper’s Drug Mart, the reaction would be the same. Well, it’s not a Shopper’s Drug Mart, and I would hardly call the proposed development, as described in last Wednesday’s paper, “commercial.” It’s “daycare,” “social housing,” and offices for a not-for-profit group that has done a great deal of good for women and families in New Westminster over the years. I think it’s sad that people would try to block such a development in their neighbourhood, and I suspect there is a hidden ignorance in those who back such a block, even if the group’s spokesperson doesn’t think so. When Shopper’s Drug Mart comes knocking at your door, then go ahead and start your petitions. I’ll even sign.

I am writing this letter in support of the proposed Elizabeth Fry rezoning of 273 and 275 Sherbrooke St. from a single detached dwelling district to a comprehensive district zone. I believe the proposed development will only serve to enhance the community in which I live. The availability of more child care and non-market housing are essential in every community plan. I would like Sapperton to be a welcoming and inclusive community. Elizabeth Fry has been a good neighbour, and I look forward to the completion of this project.

may be a bit slower than her classmates, she thinks her attention to detail will be an asset if she decides to go into cabinet and moulding work. “Getting it right is what’s important,” she said. “And when you’re doing cabinets, it’s way more important to get it right the first time.” Tiffany hasn’t had many problems with her studies, and she’s proud of her accomplishments. “I did really well on all but one of the tests,” she said. “I think the only one I failed was portable power tools. … The great thing about the tests (in carpentry) is they’re all practical, and the written tests are

City tackles troubles at outdoor pool The City of New Westminster has taken some steps to address cloudy water issues that have plagued Moody Park Outdoor Pool since it opened in 2009. Cloudy water has posed problems for the $5-million pool, which had to be closed on a couple of occasions during its first summer. Last summer, parks staff started closing the pool for a one-hour period daily around dinnertime to manage the cloudy water. Dean Gibson, the city’s director of parks, culture and recreation, said an additional filter was added in the mechanical room during the off-season. It’s hoped that

addresses some of the water issues. The Moody Park Outdoor Pool kicked off its 2011 season on Monday, June 6. The pool will remain open until Labour Day. “When it’s warm and sunny, it’s usually good,” Gibson said about attendance. “We have been having some school group and organized groups.” Gibson said that one-hour break is still included in the pool’s schedule, but it could be eliminated if it’s determined the new filter has improved the water issues to such a degree that the late afternoon closure is no longer needed. www.twitter.com/TheresaMcManus

‘Cats’ still a hot item New Westminster police have arrested a man they say was caught in the act of stealing a catalytic converter from a parked vehicle. Officers made the arrest around 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 12, after receiving a report of a suspicious man underneath a parked vehicle on the 100-block of East Columbia Street. After attending the scene, an officer found the man still partway under the vehicle, attempting to cut off the “cat” with a power tool. Police are recommending several charges including theft and break and enter against the 33-yearold Burnaby man arrested at the scene. Cat theft has become endemic in North America in recent years due to their rela-

Unscrupulous scrap metal dealers are known to pay $50 to $100 per catalytic converter, but they can cost up to $2,000 in parts and labour to replace. New Westminster Police had nine such thefts reported to them in February and March of this year, almost all of them from Toyota 4Runners, which are said to be the easiest to steal catalytic converters from. New Westminster police recommend parking cars in well-lit, open areas near pedestrian activity, keeping vehicles locked and empty of valuable goods, and investing in anti-theft devices such as vehicle immobilizers. www.twitter.com/BrentRichter

Rain, rain go away The annual Arts in the Park festival has enjoyed several years of sunshine, but this year’s event was hard hit by rain. Moody Park is normally packed with people for Arts in the Park, but Saturday’s pouring rain meant far fewer people attended than in past years. Those who attended enjoyed entertainment such as Jacky’s Village (music, dance and storytelling) and Mike Battie (a physical comedian). Kids were able to get creative at a number of handson art stations. Arts in the Park is sponsored by the New Westminster Arts Council.

A neighbourhood of artists Artists in the Boro brings together an eclectic mix of talents BY JULIE MACLELLAN REPORTER jmaclellan@royalcityrecord.com

Karen Justice knows they’re out there. Artists, that is. And if “out there” happens to mean “in Queensborough,” she’d really like to hear from them. Justice is one of the founding members of the new Artists in the Boro group. It was formed – in the words of its mandate – to “discover, promote and celebrate the talents of artists residing in the unique community of Queensborough.” The group originally grew out of the work of the Queensborough Special Programs Committee, whenQueensboroughCommunity Centre manager Renée Chadwick asked if Justice would be interested in spearheading such a group. Artists Dale Costanzo and Joann Heringer quickly jumped on board, and soon the three found themselves in the throes of setting up a group. “It’s kind of taken on a life of its own,” says Justice with a laugh. It’s been slowly but steadily growing since its first meeting, gathering one or two new members each meeting, and it now stands at about 15 members. some have taken up art in retireJustice is sure there are plenty ment; others are full-time working of other artists in the community, artists. and she’s hoping to find them. “It doesn’t matter what level of “Queensborough is just this expertise – it can be professional enclave of interesting people, an or amateur. Spring is a time of renewal. Hundreds of thousands of Canadians mark this rite of passage every year by raking, pruning and planting to make their gardens beautiful.Yet for the more than four million Canadians living with arthritis, the bending, stretching and lifting that gardening entails can seem daunting. Gardening is actually an excellent form of exercise that helps maintain strength and mobility without putting additional stress on your joints. The Arthritis Society offers the following tips for smart, safe gardening: • Always be sure to stretch and warm up before working in the garden. This will help reduce stiffness and decrease your risk of injury.

Tone up with housework

Aging in place means planning S I M P L E T H I N G S A R O U N D T H E H O M E C A N B E C O M E N E E D L E S S C H A L L E N G E S by Tessa Holloway Peter Simpson had never thought too much about where the plugs in his house were located until he had a hernia operation. “Just a simple thing like bending over to plug in my battery charger in my cell phone, I had to take my time doing it,” said Simpson. “If that power receptacle had only been about six inches or so higher, it wouldn’t have been nearly as challenging.” For Simpson, president and CEO of the Greater Vancouver Home Builders’ Association, it was a perfect example of why his organization is pushing to educate homebuilders on how to build houses where seniors can age in place. Simpson’s problem was temporary, but for many others, the location of electrical outlets can mean the difference between independence and relying on others. Seniors’ accessibility is also a concern being raised more and more by customers, said John Friswell, owner of the North Vancouver-based CCI Renovations. “A lot of (homeowners) have had homes for a long time and they’re now looking at their house and saying, ‘Wow, I’ve got a two-storey house that’s 5,000 square feet,

how am I going to stay here?’” Friswell took a four-day Certified Ageing in Place Specialist (CAPS) course provided by the home builders’ association a few years ago so he could advise clients, and said he incorporates many of the ideas into every house he renovates. That includes making sure wood backing is installed behind shower walls so grab-bars can be screwed in later, as well as lowering the height of light switches. He also can install contrasting materials so visually impaired have an easier time navigating or wider doors and larger bathrooms for easier wheelchair access, among other changes. He also said they try to install houses with deep closets directly above one another in case homeowners decide to install a residential elevator when they’re unable to use the stairs. Simpson said some seniors are also finding they want to live closer to family, which has prompted several North Shore municipalities to investigate the idea of laneway homes in back yards, so seniors Mike Wakefield photo could live with family while maintaining John Friswell incorporates their independence. “I think more municipalities should jump “aging in place” concepts into on board with that, but of course we’ve got renovations. some resistance to that,” said Simpson.

Wether you’re scrubbing a winter’s worth of grime from windows, tidying up the garage or pruning dead branches, spring cleaning gives you a work–out at the same time. Movement is crucial in the golden years, and you need look no further than around the house for ways to add some activity to your day. For someone with arthritis, mopping floors and spreading mulch can be especially helpful, as these activities maintain muscle strength and flexibility.

When it comes to managing arthritis pain, every bit of movement helps, including time spent doing routine home and garden clean–up. Physical activity protects joints by strengthening the muscles around them. Strong muscles and tissues support those joints that have been weakened and damaged by arthritis. Event aims to support local food banks AROUND TOWN

THERESA MCMANUS

T

he Protein for People Project is inviting residents to attend a free barbecue in New Westminster. The project is a community initiative of 26 labour unions to support local food banks across British Columbia. The barbecue is taking place on Saturday, June 25 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Lord Kelvin Elementary School. A press release notes that the barbecue is a way for the Protein for People Project to reach out and let people know that labour unions are part of the community. “We want to make this a fun event for families, as well as an opportunity for people to find information about services in the community,” said Joanna Evenson, one of the event’s coordinators. “We’re hoping for good weather and just want

people to come out and have a fun time.” The event will feature a kids’ play zone, face painting, music and other entertainment. Information about services in New Westminster will also be available. Similar events have been held in the past in Revelstoke and Surrey, but this is the first event in New Westminster. It’s been organized with the support of the Hospitality Project at Shiloh-Sixth Avenue United Church, which is home to the New Westminster food bank depot. “Thousands of British Columbians are dependent on food banks to provide them with food in order to survive,” said a press release. “One of the most critical shortages in the diets of people depending upon food banks is dietary protein found in such foods as meat, fish, eggs and dairy products. A protein-deficient diet causes people to suffer from all manner of disease related to malnutrition.” The Protein for People Project has partnerships with food banks and helps provide protein food to

those in need. Lord Kelvin Elementary School is located at 1010 Hamilton St. (across from Moody Park Outdoor Pool). Everyone is invited to attend.

Get talking

The Vancouver Foundation is inviting residents to participate in community conversations to discuss key topics and interests in New Westminster. According to the Vancouver Foundation, one of the findings of its 2010 Vital Signs report was that a strong sense of belonging and trust between neighbours helps creates stronger, healthier communities. The foundation is holding community conversations in New Westminster, Richmond, Vancouver, North Vancouver, Maple Ridge and White Rock to explore this idea and focus on issues most important to those communities. In New Westminster, the community conversation is taking place on Thursday, June 23 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Centennial Community Centre. Registration for this free

event takes place at 5:30 p.m. For more information visit www.vancouverfoun dationvitalsigns.ca/com munity-conversations.

◗ HEALTH

Let’s talk about love HEALTHWISE

DR. DAVIDICUS WONG

E

ach of us is unique. We are a complex mix of the strengths and weaknesses of our parents, and to this mix, we have our own idiosyncracies. Our beliefs and behaviours are shaped by our experiences. So each couple is unique, in how two unique individuals relate. The strengths and problems of each couple are not generic, but there are common communication traps. ◗ All or Nothing Language: When we start off statements about our partners with, “You always … ” or “You never … ” we perpetuate in our own minds skewed and biased caricatures of them. The more we reinforce an ever-narrowing view of them, the less likely we are to see evidence to the contrary. This is one of the ways we can slide into ever more negative views of one another. We can only get off this slippery slope by stepping to the side, taking a better look and gaining a wider view of both our partners and our relationships. It can start by resolving never to say “never” … or “always.” ◗ Inaccurate Mindreading: It’s great when we’re so used to our habits and preferences that we know just what the other wants. It makes meal planning

and gift buying much easier. Mindreading can push us apart when it’s not so accurate, and it leads to anger and resentment towards one another. We can make incorrect assumptions about our partners’ motivation behind acts of omission. If our partners forget an important date, we might assume that they don’t really care about us, though this probably isn’t the case. If one person doesn’t give a hug, a kiss or another expected expression of affection, the other might conclude they’ve fallen out of love. Some people decide to leave a relationship when their needs have not been met. Too often they make this decision having never expressed those needs. Hurt or angry feelings can fester in our own minds. If we don’t look at our assumptions and express how we feel, we can grow further apart and our negative feelings can eventually boil over. ◗ Emotional Arguments: We’ve all heard the advice about never going to bed angry, but when one or both partners is very angry, a time out is better than an escalating argu-

ment. When we’re emotionally aroused, we’re not as rational. In a tantrum, a five-year-old will act like a toddler and an adult like a child. In anger, we can say and do things we will regret and cause greater harm to one another and our relationships. Each partner in an adult relationship has to take responsibility for his or her own emotions and disengage long enough to control anger as soon as it starts to simmer. A couple should agree on their rules of engagement and disengagement. When is it OK to take a time out, and when is it OK to resume a discussion in a calm environment? In upcoming columns and in my blog at davidicuswong.wordpress. com: Rebalancing how we see one another and reconceptualizing our relationships. Dr. Davidicus Wong is a physician and writer. His Healthwise column appears regularly in this paper, and his blog can be found at davidicuswong. wordpress.com, twitter. com/drdavidicuswong and facebook.com/davidicus. wong. Will he be the first B.C. No. 1? BY TOM BERRIDGE SPORTS EDITOR tberridge@royalcityrecord.com

If Ryan NugentHopkins gets his wish, he’ll have less than a 145kilometre drive ahead of him to make his NHL dream come true. The 18-year-old North Burnaby star has topped nearly everyone-who’sanyone’s mock draft list to be the No. 1 selection overall heading into the pro junior lottery to be held in Minnesota Friday and Saturday. That No. 1 selection in the pro draft is currently held by the Edmonton Oilers, barring any 11thhour trading. “It’s pretty cool obviously. I remember last year listening to the Taylor (Hall)/Tyler (Seguin) thing. Now, the same thing is going on with me,” said Nugent-Hopkins in a recent phone interview. “I’m really excited with my opportunities.” The possibility of being headed to Edmonton as the Oilers’ No. 1 pick overall has not been lost on the talented 6-0, 165-pound Red Deer Rebels centre either. “Yeah, I’d really like to get drafted by Edmonton. They’re a young and talented team and they’re a rebuilding team. I really would like to be part of a rebuilding team and take those first steps towards getting better.” That is precisely what the slick skating centre did when he broke into the Dub as an under-age 15year-old with the Red Deer Rebels. Just the previous year, Red Deer was languishing at the bottom of the WHL’s

Alberta bound: Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is the concensus pick to be taken No. 1 in Friday’s NHL junior entry draft. Eastern Conference. He was called up from the Northwest Giants of the B.C. major midget league for his allowable five games, and quickly tallied two goals and six points in his brief stint. The following year, he helped the Rebels make a 23-point turnaround during the regular season, helping the team earn a spot in the playoffs, while

scoring nearly a point-pergame, including 24 goals in his WHL rookie-of-theyear season. This year, NugentHopkins, as a 17-year-old, finished third in league scoring with a league-best 75 assists and 106 points. He just turned 18 in April. Earlier in the season, Nugent-Hopkins captained Team Orr to a 71 win at the Canadian

Hockey League Top Prospects game in Toronto, setting up two of the goals while winning the player of the game award along way. Later, he was also named the winner of the CHL’s top prospect of the year. As a youngster, NugentHopkins led the Burnaby Winter Club to the Western Canada bantam champi-

onships on two separate ocassions, helping win the organization’s second of three titles in 2007. The following year, Nugent-Hopkins was drafted No. 1 overall by Red Deer in the WHL bantam draft, while also being named the B.C. minor hockey player of the year. Nugent-Hopkins has also represented Canada internationally at both the under-17 and -18 levels. At the 2010 Ivan Hlinka memorial u-18 hockey championships in Slovakia, Nugent-Hopkins helped captain Canada to a gold medal, while leading all tournament scoring with five goals and two assists. He also scored the 10 game-winning goal against the United States in the championship final, finishing off an end-to-end break up the right-side boards with a wicked snap shot in the first period. If Nugent-Hopkins is taken first overall in the draft, the North Burnaby product would be the highest-ever B.C. player taken in the history of the NHL. Coincidentally, another Burnaby product, Ryan Walter, currently holds that honour. Walter was drafted second by the Washington Capitals in the 1978 draft. But Nugent-Hopkin’s 6-0, 160-pound frame may yet be a determining factor in the final picks of NHL general managers. In 2007, an equally lean Kyle Turris, a New Westminster native, was the NHLCentral Scouting’s concensus No. 1 pick but went third overall to the ◗Draft Page 27

When your star is on the rise, run with it. That is the position Burnaby Minor hockey product Luke Lockhart finds himself in just days before the NHL conducts its junior entry draft in Minnesota. In his third season with the Seattle Thunderbirds of the Western Hockey League, the Burnaby centre had a breakout season with the major junior club. Lockhart’s final numbers tripled over that of last two seasons, leaving him with 21 goals and 48 total points, fourth-best on

the last-place club in the Western Conference. If that was not enough to gain the attention of pro scouts, Lockhart turned heads at the recent NHL combines in Toronto, which are held each year prior to the draft to test the fitness and stamina of the prospective pros. While less than 5-11 in height and just over 180 pounds, Lockhart scored well in a host of top-10 categories, including vertical and long jumps, while tieing for first in the bench press and pushups. “I felt really good and in shape,” said Lockhart. “Testing is the easy ◗T-Bird Page 28

◗ LACROSSE

N.W. righty stars Bellies making every game count in pro lax debut

BY TOM BERRIDGE SPORTS EDITOR tberridge@royalcityrecord.com

The New Westminster Salmonbellies were witness to more than the retirement of John Allen’s jersey number last Saturday. The senior A ’Bellies made short work of the host Coquitlam Adanacs as well, earning a 7-2 win in the first meeting between the two Western Lacrosse Association clubs. Cliff Smith came up big for the New West club, figuring in on six of the Salmonbellies’ seven scores, including four goals. “The nice thing is I can coast for a while. I won’t be due in a while,” Smith quipped after the game. But the more serious issue was how the Salmonbellies went about it.

“(Coquitlam) was running hard. The reason we were doing it was to stop them,” said Smith. “It’s not who beats who, but at the same time, whenever you play Coquitlam, it always means something. … If you want to win the league, they’re one of the teams you have to beat.” Tyler Richards shone in his old Coquitlam digs, turning away 42 of 44 Adanacs shots. Jeff Zywicki scored once and set up four New West goals, while Ilija Gajic chipped in with two goals and a couple of helpers. The win was a much more up-tempo effort than last Thursday’s 10-7 victory over Nanaimo at Queen’s Park Arena. The home ’Bellies jumped out to a 6-0 firstperiod lead and then held

on for the win. Matt Roik got the win in goal, stopping 45 shots. Enforcer Rory Smith got his first WLA goal on a shorthanded effort in the middle frame. Kevin Crowley led the Salmonbellies with two goals and three assists. Fellow righthander Jordan McBride also had a pair of counters. With the wins, New West moved into a firstplace tie with the Victoria Shamrocks, but with a game in hand. However, just five points separates last-place from first. “I think you can make an argument for a number of teams,” Smith said, adding the Salmonbellies must continue to improve if they want to do well in the playoffs.

“We’ve been so close for a number of years. We have to realize every practice and every game counts,” Smith said. “As close as we’ve been, the thing you have to realize is if you take a night off and don’t get better that could be what costs you.” New Westminster has a busy extended weekend coming up. Victoria will visit Queen’s Park on Thursday before the ’Bellies play back-to-back road games in Langley Saturday and in Nanaimo on Sunday. New Westminster ’s Jordan McBride was named the Major League Lacrosse rookie of the week after a promising pro debut last Saturday. It took McBride just under three minutes to record his first professional field lacrosse league goal as he opened the scoring for the Rochester Rattlers in a 16-14 loss to the Boston Cannons. The New Westminster Salmonbellie righthander ended up with four goals and two assists in his pro debut. McBride was one of the most prolific scorers in college lacrosse history

in his four-year career with the Stony Brook University Seawolves. McBride was a fourtime All-American at Stony Brook, where he scored 40 or more goals in all four of his varsity seasons on the squad. As a freshman, McBride had a record-setting season with 44 goals and 11 assists for 55 points. He added 41 goals as a sophomore and 48 goals as a junior before netting 41 goals this season. McBride finished his collegiate career 10th on the NCAA Division I scoring list with 175 goals and 209 points.

While Nugent-Hopkins admits he’ll be sitting on pins and needles before hearing his name called at the draft, he aims to take whatever comes in stride and just enjoy the moment. “Yeah, I’m very excited about it,” he said. Live coverage of the NHL entry draft is available on TSN June 24 and 25.

◗ 7-ON-7 PASSING CHALLENGE

Tweedsmuir wins first skelly title BY TOM BERRIDGE SPORTS EDITOR tberridge@royalcityrecord.com

Lord Tweedsmuir won its first-ever Big Kahuna 7-on-7 Passing Challenge Sunday. The Surrey secondary school surprised the Nooksack Valley Pioneers in the tournament final, riding the arm of MVP quarterback Michael Messenger to a 39-23 victory over the single A Washington State school at Mercer Stadium in New Westminster. Messenger threw five touchdown passes in the final game and also picked off one of two Pioneer passes on defence in the first half. Tweedsmuir scored four times in the first half to take a 32-7 advantage. “Usually we’re a run offence a little bit. But we did well yesterday and today” said Messenger, who admitted the Big Kahuna title was a pleasant surprise. For Tweedsmuir head coach Kurt Thornton the initial tournament win came on the heels of the team’s 5-1 record in a spring high school 7s league. “You do what you think you can do and some of

They’ve worked in the off season and their confidence has grown,” said Thornton. Tweedsmuir plays in the competitive B.C. high school league’s tough Eastern conference, which has won eight of the past 10 provincial championships.

But Thornton is hopeful that a strong spring showing will translate into a fast start come the fall and erase a 0-5 conference finish last season. “Our offensive line is improved and we’re confident our passing game is going to figure more prominently in our offence,”

added Thornton. “Every kid on that team was able to catch the ball and make plays.” Tweedsmuir knocked off New Westminster and fifthplace finisher Rick Hansen en route to the final. Handsworth and Mouat placed third and fourth, respectively.

part in a way. … But’s basically it (shows) how hard you are prepared to work.” Lockhart’s final Central Scouting ranking among North American skaters climbed five spots from his midterm 73rd posting, and it’s possible that his star could be burning even brighter when the draft gets under way on Friday. Nevertheless, Lockhart is not expecting to hear his name called on opening day and will be staying home, waiting close to the telephone. “I’ve been working my whole life to play in the NHL,” said Lockhart, who expressed no preference in where he would

like to end up. “Being a dominant, highly thought of player in the league is something I’ve tried to do. I want to keep working hard and work to make it to the next level.” Still, these are exciting days for young men like Lockhart, who are anxiously hoping to soon get their opportunity for a chance to make the big leagues. “I’m going to give it my all,” Lockhart said, adding that today’s successes will be tempered by the notion that somewhere out there is another young prospect waiting for the opportunity to take his place. “Yeah,” Lockhart added. “That’s what I working for, to get my shot.”
