Man in custody after hostage taking BY ALAN CAMPBELL

acampbell@richmond-news.com

CHUNG CHOW/RICHMOND NEWS

A man who is known to police is driven away in a police car to possibly face charges for holding a woman hostage on Tuesday afternoon. Earlier, a shot was heard, but police have confirmed no one was injured.

A man is in custody facing charges after an apparent hostage-taking drama unfolded in Richmond. About 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday, almost six hours after a shot was fired, armed police ERT (emergency response team) officers arrested a man at an apartment complex just south of the Granville and Railway avenues intersection in West Richmond. Police negotiators had spent several hours communicating by phone with the man holed up inside the Sussex Square building on Lindsay Road. Police are still trying to ascertain who fired the shot, but said that no one was injured in either the incident or the arrest, during which the man gave up without a fight. One man, who said his friend was texting him from inside the complex, said his friend saw a handgun. Although police won’t confirm they were dealing with a hostage-related incident, it’s understood the man and woman in question are a couple. see Cops page 3

Air Canada strike pending Realtor charged with slavery Filipino woman forced to work around clock: Police

Workers asked to take 40 per cent cut to pensions After making concession after concession over the years, Peter Friesen, a longtime customer service agent with Air Canada, said he and his colleagues are ready to walk off the job at YVR if Air Canada doesn’t withdraw its decision to cut customer service agents’ pensions by 40 per cent. “It’s incredibly unfair that Air Canada is changing the goalposts 32 years into my employment,” said the 55-year-old airport customer service agent. “They want us to take a 40 per cent cut to our pension plan … that’s after we have taken pay cuts, no pay increases for years with the promise that Air Canada would not touch our pensions … now they are reneging on their promise.”

Win-It CONTEST

Air Canada customer service agents across the country, including Richmond members of the Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) Local 2002, are poised to strike at 11:59 p.m. Monday, June 13. The union represents 3,800 members across the country. Members recently voted 98 per cent in favour of striking. At the crux of the issue, said Leslie Dias, CAW national representative, is pension security. “It’s completely unacceptable,” said Dias from Toronto. “A 40 per cent cut is huge, it’s not even something remotely reasonable, especially after all the cuts the employees have made over the years to protect their pensions. Now Air Canada is going back on its word and going after members’ pensions. see Airline page 8

A Richmond realtor is being accused of forcing a woman into domestic slavery after police found a Filipino woman living illegally in her Vancouver home. Vancouver police investigated and found the woman was being exploited after she was brought to Vancouver from Hong Kong by realtor Oi Ling Nicole Huen and her partner Franco Yiu Kwan Orr in 2008. “The woman was forced into domestic services and was working 24 hours a day, allegedly seven days a week, caring for the family,” Vancouver police Const. Jana McGuinness said Wednesday. “Over the next two years, from 2008 to 2010, she continued to work at this pace,”

the officer said. Police alleged that the couple had taken away the woman’s passport so she couldn’t leave the country and she was wary of complaining to authorities because she was in the country illegally. The Filipino woman had arrived in Canada in 2008 with the couple on a visitor’s visa. Huen and Orr have each been charged, under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, with human smuggling and human trafficking. The accused are both due in Vancouver Provincial Court on June 22 at 9 a.m. The Vancouver Sun reached Huen by phone and she declined to comment, referring any questions to her lawyer. see Police page 4

Cops: Still trying to piece together dramatic events Continued from page 1 The man taken into custody is known to police. Richmond RCMP spokeswoman Sherrdean Turley said on Thursday that investigators were still working hard to put the pieces of the case together. Turley added that it still wasn’t clear when or what kind of charges will be laid against the man in custody. Insp. Janice Gray said on Tuesday that they were reacting to a 911 call about a disturbance

between and man and a woman who were outside the Sussex Square building. By the time police arrived, the couple had gone back inside, Gray said. Residents of the building, who had been evacuated for their safety, were allowed back into the complex once the arrest was made. Earlier on Tuesday, a nearby secondary school, Burnett, was locked down after police realized the severity of the incident

unfolding a few hundred yards away. Burnett, on the north side of the Granville and Railway avenues intersection, was issued the lockdown warning at around 2:15 p.m., just before hundreds of students were set to be dismissed. Around 3:45 p.m., more than an hour after regular closing time, students were allowed to leave the school for home. See more pictures of the incident at www.richmond-news. com.

Continued from page 1 Police said Wednesday that the investigation began a year ago after police were called to a home in the 3100-block of Grant Street in East Vancouver on an unrelated 911 call. “This is one of the first cases that we have dealt with of this kind,” McGuinness said. “We really haven’t seen this in the past, of this nature, so it seems to be relatively new to our investigators.” Inside the residence, officers discovered that the Filipino woman was living there illegally because her visitor’s visa had expired. The VPD Vice Unit was called in to take over the investigation. The 38-year-old Filipino woman at the centre of the case continues to reside there, police said Wednesday. The couple’s $1.39million home on Grant Street is currently up for sale.

Huen, a realtor at the Richmond branch of Magsen Realty, became licensed in November 2009, according to the Real Estate Council of B.C. No complaints about Huen have been made to date, said Tyler Davis, a spokesman for the council. He said the council has the ability to revoke the licences of realtors found in professional or legal misconduct. Davis said the council will monitor the situation. This investigation marks the second highprofile human trafficking-related charge in recent months in Metro Vancouver. In May, West Vancouver police issued a warrant for 55-year-old Mumtaz Ladha. Ladha — who has yet to be located by police — is accused of hiring a 21-year-old African woman under false pretences only to keep her in slave-like conditions in a West Vancouver home, working 18 hours a day, seven days a week.

Commercial property owners in Richmond’s Brighouse may soon be breathing a collective sigh of property tax relief, after the B.C. government passed exemption legislation. Certain businesses in the area may now be eligible for a partial exemption on their 2012-2016 property taxes. The legislation was created to provide relief to property owners in the Brighouse area, who have seen extraordinary increases in their property assessments since 2005, with some cases exceeding 300 per cent. The resulting property tax increases threatened to force many local business to close or relocate, putting hundreds of local jobs at risk. Thanks to the new legislation, the City of Richmond can now approve partial tax exemptions on both the municipal and provincial (school) portions of the overall

property tax bill. “This is an exceptional situation where many property owners were facing huge increases due to a unique combination of factors beyond anyone’s control,” said Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “The huge increases were putting many jobs at risk, which would be a blow to our local economy. We’re thankful to the province, particularly Richmond Centre MLA Rob Howard and his predecessor Olga Ilich, for working with us to address this issue.” There will be a number of conditions that a business property within the city centre area will have to meet in order to qualify for the tax relief. Terms of how the exemption will be applied are yet to be finalized. The bylaw that establishes the exemption program and application process will be in front of city council soon, with an expected application deadline of Sept. 16 in order to qualify for a 2012 tax exemption.

Sam Wade, left, and cycling mad companion Brian Tong make it to the Californian state line. Next stop, Mexico.

acampbell@richmond-news.com

It was getting late and the rain was bouncing off the road as Sam Wade and Brian Tong tried desperately to find shelter for the night. Wade and Tong were exhausted strangers in an even stranger town, somewhere near San Francisco. Everywhere they went, the door was either slammed in their faces or the price was simply too high. “There was torrential rain and we couldn’t find a campsite anywhere and couldn’t find a motel or hotel that we could afford. No one was helping us,” said Richmondite Wade. “That was a very low point and we were not happy with the world at that time. “But then this woman, who ran a motel, took pity on us after hearing our story and gave us a free stay and free food.” The student recalled how the woman was moved by what they were trying to achieve and “wanted to do her part.” Wade and Tong — both 21 and on their Easter Seals on Wheels mission to cycle from Vancouver to Mexico — were touched by the woman’s generosity

and their faith in what they were doing was restored. Last year, the pair, along with other friends, cycled the 8,000-kilometres across Canada for months to raise money and awareness for prostate cancer research. This year, men-with-a-mission Wade and Tong were raising money for the Easter Seals charity, which sends kids with disabilities to camp every summer. This epic 3,000-kilometre journey, although shorter, was a whole different ball game, however, as they faced seemingly never-ending hills, broken roads, severe weather, repairs and a sometimes frosty reception from locals. However, Wade was driven through-

out by the memory of one of the young campers, Damien Kaweski, who he’d gotten close to at Easter Seals in the past, but who died suddenly in March. “Damien’s father presented me with Damien’s favourite hat before we left. That was what kept me going,” Wade said. Thirty three days into their road trip, the pair stopped short of the Mexican border and flew back home, weary but wiser, last Thursday. “We realized Tijuana (Mexican border town) wasn’t for us. It wasn’t a place for two people on their bikes who don’t know where they’re going. “Plus, I really wanted to get back see Wade page 7 06108200

It’s been a long time coming, so I couldn’t miss that. “I would say we pedaled a little faster on the last few days.” Looking back on the 33-day quest — two more than they’d planned — Wade recalled how Washington State was “pretty smooth sailing, despite all the rain. “There was a scary moment when I was going down a hill at about 50 kilometres per hour when I hit a crack in the road. “I couldn’t see it because of a shadow and when I went through it, my pack starting going all over the place and then I went into a kind of tailspin.” Jamming on the breaks and simply hoping for the best, Wade came to a shuddering halt. “I somehow survived. That could have been the end of the journey right there.” Before San Francisco, the pair spent several days trying to find a special part for Wade’s bike, which was starting to show signs of fatigue itself, having been

Resistance training is important for everyone and is the most effective way to lose body fat and remain lean. It conditions the body for strength, endurance, flexibility, joint resiliency, and motor skill coordination. Many feel it is solely for bodybuilders; however, every body needs weight training.

Many women have the fear of “bulking up” when, in reality, the training of your muscles actually helps you decrease your size due to the loss of body fat, which takes up approximately three times more space than muscle tissue. It is not uncommon for women to triple their strength and to simultaneously go down two to three pant sizes. This is more permanent weight loss since muscle tissue is what drives the metabolism.

Continued from page 1 Air Canada’s media relations spokeswoman, Angela Mah, said the company has no choice if it wants to stay viable. “As a 75-year old former Crown Corporation, Air Canada has about $13 billion of pension liabilities. As of January 1, 2011, based on preliminary estimates, the company’s pension deficit stood at $2.1 billion, which was $600 million better than a year ago as a result of a strong fund performance in 2010,” Mah said. “However, this deficit is not sustainable and has not been sustainable for most of the decade, as it puts at risk both the viability of the company and the pensions of all employees.” Last year, Air Canada paid $180 million into its domestic registered pension plans, she added. “With the expiry last December of a moratorium on past service payments, assuming no change to current deficit levels, we are looking at $320 million in payments this year,” said Mah. “To further illustrate the magnitude of the challenge, by 2014 Air Canada could be required to make $550 million of payments for both current and past service if the deficit remains at current levels.” She went on to say that Air Canada: “Is committed to reaching a negotiated settlement with the union leadership and avert strike action. We’ve been discussing a number of possible solutions within the context of labour negotiations to preserve defined pension benefits for current employees.” Although Dias doesn’t dispute Air Canada’s deficit numbers, she said Mah’s

arguments don’t wash. “Its former CEO Robert Milton, made $86 million over 10 years and during those years our members were taking pay cuts,” said Dias. “Last year, Air Canada’s current CEO, Calvin Rovinescu made $4.7 million and he’s signed a contract stating that if he stays until March 31, 2012, he gets a $5 million bonus … there’s no consistency between how Air Canada compensates the top brass and how they treat our members.” Dias went on to say: “We have made major concessions to Air Canada in 2004 and many more major economic sacrifices throughout the years. Now the company’s making money and the executives are taking huge salaries, and they want to make us make more sacrifices. It’s an issue of what’s right.” Meanwhile, Friesen would like to avoid a strike but thinks it’s inevitable. “I have a vested interest in seeing the company successful, but it means a huge cut in my pension. I’m not prepared to accept that,” said Friesen, adding Air Canada also wants to change the minimum retirement age from 55 to 60. “None of us want to strike, we aren’t striking to gain anything only trying to preserve what we have.” Friesen said he and his colleagues believe this strike could be a long one. Despite possible labour unrest, Mah said: “Customers should continue booking Air Canada with confidence. In the event of a strike, Air Canada will maintain a full operation and implement a contingency service plan at airports and call centres to minimize impact on customers.”

PM’s method worth studying

T

welve years ago, Canadian conservatives were dead in the water. Cleaved between two parties and split by internal disputes, the right wing in this country seemed stranded from power and unlikely to contend anytime soon. There was a time, in fact, when serious thinkers were predicting an endless Liberal reign in Canada. Under Paul Martin, the party was expected to win 250, maybe even 300 seats. That the reverse is now true — the Liberals astray and the Conservatives ascendant — is owed in no small part to the political instincts of the prime minister, Stephen Harper. You don’t have to admire Harper’s ideology to respect what he achieved. Harper united a party and crushed his foes. He did it slowly and methodically, if too often with tactics unworthy of the institution he serves. Which brings us to Brigette DePape. DePape, 21, was, until last week, a Senate page. During Friday’s speech from the throne, she walked onto the Senate floor and held up a sign that read: “Stop Harper.” It was, in a way, an admirable protest. It takes guts to speak out, and DePape paid for her gall with her job. But if the now-former page really wants to stop Harper, if she is committed to building an alternative, she’d be better off studying, rather than protesting, the prime minister’s ways. Harper created a government out of a protest movement by building out for years, riding by riding. To do the same, DePape will need a lot more than red signs and news releases. It will be interesting to see if she tries.

CHOICE WORDS

New HST ads patronizing The Editor, Is it just me, or do those government ads about the HST annoy you too? They are so obviously biased the only thing missing is a the little stick dog lifting his leg against the GST+PST signs! For all the little stick citizens with short memories, let’s remember that the HST is in reality PST added to things that were not provincially taxed before. Everything from weddings to funerals, trades and services, haircuts, second hand clothes, safety gear, theatre tickets, community centre passes — all taxed now when they didn’t used to be. No wonder the HST is costing each person over $300 per year. And here the government is acting all surprised that its coffers are filling up like magic! We little stick people were deceived when the HST was brought in. And only now do we finally get to vote on it. But even the vote is biased, because you have to vote “No” to keep the tax and “Yes” to get rid of it. And the promise to decrease the tax to 10 per cent in 2014, four years after they’ve been collecting it? Come on. Fool us once, shame on them. Fool us twice, shame on us. De Whalen Richmond

No hidden, magic cure for cancer One of my readers called to yell at me the other day. The caller didn’t give his name, but he had apparently seen my recent column about the Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. I wrote about how I’m hopeful that we can actually cure cancer within my lifetime. My caller was convinced, absolutely certain, that cancer has already been cured. That these cures are, in fact, being concealed by doctors, politicians, and the pharmaceutical industry. Sadly, this belief is not uncommon. There are tens of thousands of people in Canada who believe, in whole or in part, that science-based medicine is wrong. For people who have seen a relative suffer from a serious or fatal cancer, or who have been through surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation themselves, this is understandable. We are still at the dawn of effective cancer treatments. Radiation therapy dates to the turn of the last century. Chemotherapy dates to just after the Second World War. Better (but not perfect) are targeted therapies, which attack cancer cells on a molecular level. Those treatments only emerged from the labs in the late 1980s, and were not common until a few years ago. The fact that these treatments have harmful side effects is well known among doctors and nurses who work with cancer

Matthew Claxton PAINFUL TRUTH

patients. They don’t like it, they want real cures, cures that come without damaged immune systems, without scars and vomiting and hair loss. To think otherwise is absurd. But there is a surprisingly large industry dedicated to the idea that doctors and nurses, researchers and bureaucrats, are evil enough to know about secret, magical cures, and to withhold them from the public. Probably the most public example of such thinking is convicted fraud artist Kevin Trudeau, who peddled his book Natural Cures “They” Don’t Want You To Know About through infomercials. Trudeau got millions to buy his books which contained either directions to go to his website (where you paid more money) or the kind of mumbo jumbo (White clothing makes you healthier! Calcium pills make cancer go bye-bye!) that a nine-year-old could see through. There are dozens of lower-level examples, including a man in my home town who has spent years selling ozone machines, again claiming that ozone can cure cancer.

Always, in their pitches, they talk about Big Pharma, or a mysterious cabal that is profiting from pain, suffering, and death. Who are the “they” who are keeping us sick and dying, according to the conspiratorial view? There are, according to the Canadian Oncology Societies, about 330 medical oncologists in this country working with cancer patients. Add to that hundreds of specialized surgeons, about 1,500 oncology nurses, more than 1,000 GPs who deal with cancer, another 1,000-plus oncology pharmacists and 500 haematologists. Just in Canada, there are thousands of people who might be expected to know that about these mythical treatments – but who keep them secret. It implies that there are tens of thousands of people who are either immoral monsters, or dupes. It’s not plausible, and it’s not true. If you get sick, and you want to clutch a crystal or chant or have your aura meddled with, go ahead. It’s your body and it’s your money and it’s your right to do whatever you please with both. But please, please go to a real doctor as well. Science-based medicine is far from perfect. But it’s the only way we’ll get to a real cure. Matthew Claxton is a reporter with the Langley Advance.

Letters City’s spending maddening The Editor, Re: “City to squirrel away $500,000 of surplus,” News, June 8. I was appalled to read that $500,000 of our tax dollars was spent so frivolously in just one hour Monday night. It made me sick to read that $41,000 was spent on politics — $25,000 on a civic election campaign? And $16,000 on a civic election guide? Plus what was the point of only axing one

item — $60,000 to make our city more fun and event friendly. Is this no longer a priority for the city? Events benefit the entire community and bring money to the city that may help to cover some of this frivolous spending by mayor and council. It is clearly time to get the priorities straight. Stories insightful and helpful The Editor, A couple of pieces in your recent newspaper were very invigorating in the News. “Love is a choice we make” by your columnist, Dr. Wong, was excellent and within reach. Goodness only knows how desperately we need columnists who can help families rear their children well, in our family newspapers. Also Michelle Hopkins’ story of the autistic boy with the combined photos,

was heart warming and instructive. It made me want to pray for Jonathan and other children like him who share my city. I think our caring for each other seems to be slipping rather quickly. The city did a magnificent job to welcome the Tall Ships, but I’m afraid that our choice Steveston didn’t come through as well. Devine Elden kept at our shop owners to encourage hanging flower baskets, or plant some extra coloured flowers to welcome our

guests and came up empty handed. I asked a shop owner to put out a book on Steveston, since people were asking. This person couldn’t be bothered. Knowing many in the U.S., I know they would have gone the second mile to welcome Canadian guests. Maybe this was a wake-up call to stir us into random acts of kindness and thoughtfulness. It also adds to our personal joy! Esther McIlveen Richmond

Our recreational facilities, including the dykes, parks, arenas, variety of services for people of all ages and community cen-

The Editor, Classmates of the Steveston High School class of 1961 are meeting Sept. 17 to celebrate 50 years since graduation and to honour the memory of Steveston High School which closed it’s doors in 2006 and is now part of the new Steveston-London Secondary School Classmates are attending the 50th Reunion from as far away as Australia, Ontario and Saskatchewan. There are many memories to share. Fifty years ago in June 1961, Steveston High School held its first Farewell Ceremony with 89 students in the first Grade 12 graduation class. It was a very different time. In 1961, bread was sold for 18 cents per loaf at Harris Bakery on No. 3 Road, and it could even be delivered! Graduation dresses were advertised for $24.95 at Richmond’s Dawn Marie Style Shoppe. The Richmond Lions’ Club donated a new rescue wagon costing $8,000 to the Richmond Volunteer Fire Department. A Richmond newspaper advertised that housewives could order Super K Liquid Wax, the answer to all their dull floor problems, for $2.08 per quart, delivered. Imagine? The Steveston High School drama production that year was a comedy, Hill-Billy House starring Judy Retallick who brought down the house. The entire school population was divided into four teams called Houses, with the names of Alpha, Beta, Delta

and Gamma. In 1961, the Indoor Track Meet was won by Beta House whose members competed enthusiastically in events such as tug-of-war, skipping, foul shooting, potato relay, balloon busting and stepping stones. The highlights of the meet were a new event, the night shirt relay and the cake eating contest, when the cheers from the packed bleachers were louder than ever! Commerce awards were donated by the Royal Typewriter Company and students earned small, medium and large letter blocks in academics, athletics and service. In 1961, Steveston High School joined the High School Lacrosse League following Richmond’s pioneer interest and success in lacrosse. Many interesting school clubs were active, including the United Nations’ Club, Square Dance Club, Electricity Club and Future Teachers’ Club. School dances were called Mixers and Sock Hops and the Jive was the most popular dance of the day. Mr. Ernie Ball was the first principal of Steveston High School and corporal punishment including the strap was practiced, to the dismay of some unfortunate students. The school colours of purple and gold and the first school crest were designed by students of this first grad class. The Olympus, the Steveston High School Annual, was first published in 1960 and it was dedicated to the teachers who taught

during the first year of the school. Some memorable teachers during that first year were: Mr. B. Webber, Rr. R. Alpin, Mr. R. Murphy, Mr. F. Harvey, Mrs. E. Hatton, Mrs. J. Hale, Mr. D. McKay, Mrs. L. Wickson, Mr. L. Vath, Mr. O. Hoy, Mr. K Featherston and Mr. R. Draper. Mr. Fred Hilderman, Industrial Arts Instructor and one of the original staff members, will be present at the 2011 Reunion as well as several other later teachers. The 1960 issue of the Olympus contained student written articles on topics such as conservationism, 2000 A.D., Should Mothers Work?, Satellites, HBomb, Arms Race, Cold War and The New Experience of Families Eating Out. Congratulations were received from many local Steveston businesses with names like Do-Duck-Inn, Hiro’s Grocery, Lasko’s General Store, River Radio, Tot-N-Teen, Kleven’s 15 Cent Stores, Nelson Brothers’ Fisheries Paramount Plant, Ray’s Lady’s and Men’s Wear and Steveston Frosted Food Lockers. CYCLING

Annual bike ride to hit trail acampbell@richmond-news.com

06103386

The 11th annual “Island City, by Bike” tour hits the road this Sunday, June 12. The City of Richmond and the Richmond Community Cycling Committee are inviting people of all ages to hop into the saddle and take the popular tour. “Island City, by Bike” is Richmond’s annual cycling awareness event that promotes recreation, fitness activity and transportation in the city. Tour leaders will be conducting rides and participants only need to bring their bike, helmet and enthusiasm in the off chance it rains. This year, bike riders have the option of cycling along one of two routes. The long route is 22-kilometres, going along Dyke Road, returning via Railway Avenue and Williams Road. The short route is 6.5kilometres, going along local roads and the Shell Road Trail. Both routes will start and finish at the South Arm Community Centre, 8880 Williams Rd. Cyclists who would like a pre-ride bike and helmet safety check are encouraged to arrive at 9:30 a.m. at the community centre. Otherwise, the long ride starts at 10:30 a.m., while the short ride starts at 11 a.m. After the energizing morning bike rides, participants will reconvene at the South Arm Community Centre to enjoy refreshments and a raffle prize draw.

Today’s Flyers *Partial Distribution

• Future Wireless* • Stage One Academy* • Marketplace IGA*

This is a free community event, however interested cyclists are encouraged to register by quoting class number 105553 either: Online at www.richmond.ca/register; through the registration call centre 8:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. at 604-276-4300 (press “2” at the prompt) or in person at any community centre during business hours. Meanwhile, on the same day over at King George Park, two other cycling fans — Faisal Hussainaly and Jamil Ladha — will take part in this year’s Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer, benefiting the BC Cancer Foundation. The two-day, 260 kilometre ride provides the two with a unique platform to test their mental and physical boundaries. When asked how he got involved, Ladha laughed: “It was Faisal’s idea. When he suggested it, I was sure I heard “Drive to Conquer Cancer.” Joking aside, each personal story the pair hear, detailing a rider’s experience with cancer, fuels them through the next kilometre. The guys’ training, coupled with farcical gas prices, has encouraged them to commute to work daily via bike. The two will host their final fundraising event, “Aerodynamic,” at King George Park and are laying on a barbeque and live music. To sponsor the team, follow either of the links: http://www.conquercancer.ca/goto/ jamilladha or http://www.conquercancer. ca/goto/faisalspage.

Special to the News

in Friday’s RichmondNews to find out!

You can’t understate the importance of brand loyalty. A consumer’s first impression of a brand — whether it’s good or bad — plays a major role in his or her future financial decisions, and nowhere is this more evident than in the automotive world. When it comes to major purchases, it’s a human nature to go with what you know. And that’s a problem for Toyota — or rather, that was a problem for Toyota. In 2003, the Japanese automaker was at the top of its game, increasing sales steadily and producing the world’s best-built vehicles. However, its vehicle line-up had taken a decidedly conservative turn over the years, leading consumers to view Toyota as the first place you’d go for a family car, and the last place you’d go for a fun car. While Honda, Mazda, and Nissan were attracting the young adults who would drive future sales, Toyota couldn’t get them through the door. Recognizing that it was losing out on a key demographic, Toyota went on the offensive. However, rather than tampering with its strong identity and well-established values, Toyota instead created Scion: a new automotive brand focused entirely on young adults. The idea behind Scion was to offer a completely different purchasing experience and vehicle selection, bringing new consumers to the Toyota family and generating the oh-so-important brand loyalty. Based on the results to date, the solution works — in the U.S., 70 per cent of Scion sales are to new customers, and 50 per cent of Scion owners go on to buy Toyotas. From a Canadian standpoint, the only issue is that you couldn’t get a Scion north of the border — until now. After a carefully staged rollout across the U.S., Scion has finally come to Canada with three current cars: the xD, xB, and tC — and soon the upcoming iQ. Without a doubt, the xB is the most important of these vehicles, effectively serving as Scion’s flagship vehicle. Redesigned in 2007, the boxy xB embodies the Scion philosophy, with a single trim level and an endless list of optional features from which owners can choose. While you could simply pick a colour and drive an xB off of the lot, the fun comes from customizing the vehicle to create something that’s uniquely yours. That devotion to personal expression is what differentiates Scion from Toyota, enabling the brand to build its own reputation. And that reputation will play a major role in the future success of the entire company.

06107931

Design

The second-generation xB has a very clean and simple design, serving as a blank canvas for the many personalization items available to it. There’s a definite family resemblance amongst the three current Scion vehicles, which bear similarities to Toyota styling, but with more angular profiles and harder lines. With a bigger footprint and softer edges than the original xB, the current model would seem almost back-heavy due to the large and windowless rear pillars, if not for the meaty front grille and bumper to balance it out. The minimalist interior is spartan and functional, with large dials, a centre-mounted gauge cluster, and a console-mounted shifter. As with the exterior, the intention is for buyers to dress the xB up with accessories, but the cabin might be a little too simple for those who just want a stock Scion. Perhaps the biggest issue is that the xB’s interior feels a tad cheap relative to the competition, due mostly to an abundance of hard and unforgiving plastic. Given how it’s marketed, you’d expect a bit more from Scion. see Handling page 18

With a 2.4L inline-four producing 158-hp and 162 lb-ft of torque, the xB has sufficient power to get around when fully loaded. Its five-speed manual transmission is fluid and delivers power well, but the four-speed automatic is dated by today’s standards. For the most part, the xB drives like a small Toyota. However, it’s a lot more interesting than a Corolla or a Matrix, with a fun-loving attitude that’s mindful of the original RAV4 from the 90s. Handling is decent enough, with good road feedback from the steering. There’s nothing complicated about the xB, which demonstrates great balance and quickness without feeling a need to go fast. Scion offers a number of Toyota Racing Development parts for improved performance, including a rear sway bar for better handling, brake kit, lowering springs, strut tower brace, and sport

Environment

Inside, the xB benefits from great seats that provide firm and supportive feel without proving too hard on your back. There’s lots of headroom—as you’d expect from such a boxy vehicle — and excellent rear legroom for a compact vehicle. Depending on your

demographic, the spacious cargo area (which includes a useful underfloor storage bin) either brings an air of practicality to the xB, or provides lots of space for a giant subwoofer and amplifier. As far as controls go, the centre-mounted gauge cluster takes some getting used to, while the heating/ cooling controls follow the industry-standard threedial setup. see Bottom line page 20

DriveTime Bottom line: Fun, practical

2nd Anniversary

Continued from page 18 Everything else is pretty much left up to the stereo system, and here you have a choice of the stock Pioneer system or an upgraded Alpine deck, both of which are prewired for additional speakers. Whereas many of today’s cars have customized stereo interfaces built into their dashboards, Scion designed the xB such that the owners can easily install their own audio equipment. While that makes sense to appeal to aftermarket tuners, the xB’s ergonomics suffer as a result.

The xB sells for $18,270 with the manual transmission and $19,290 with the automatic. Standard equipment includes ABS, air conditioning, cruise control, vehicle stability control, power windows, remote keyless entry, tilt/telescope steering, six-speaker Pioneer stereo system, Bluetooth, tire-pressure monitoring system, and front/side/side-curtain airbags.

Ford offers more vehicles with

Options for the xB include a rear spoiler, heated leather seats, premium Alpine audio system, and a security system, along with a variety of Toyota Racing Development performance accessories. The only thing that’s missing is a moonroof, which you can’t get on the xB. Fuel efficiency is rated at 9.5L/100km in the city and 7.2L/100km on the highway.

Thumbs up

Interesting love-it-or-hateit styling; solid performance; extensive customization options.

Thumbs down

Plain interior; materials look a tad cheap; no moonroof option.

The bottom line

More fun than your average Toyota without giving up any practicality.

Competitors Honda Fit

Though it starts at $14,480, a fully-loaded Fit goes for $18,780 and comes with a 1.5L inline-four producing 117-hp and 106 lb-ft of torque, with fuel efficiency rated at 7.1L/100km in the city and 5.7L/100km on the highway. The best part of the Fit is the split-folding rear Magic Seat, which can be folded down to extend the cargo area or up to swallow tall and slim objects through the side doors. Kia Soul The $15,995 Soul features a 1.6L inline-four generating 122-hp and 115 lb-ft of torque, or a 2.0L inline-four with 142-hp and 137 lb-ft of torque. Fuel consumption for the smaller engine is rated at 7.7L/100km in the city and 6.3L/100km on the highway. As small as it is on the outside, the Soul is surprisingly spacious on the inside, proving to be a smart and practical vehicle that’s halfway between a subcompact hatch and a compact SUV.

ARTHRITIS

Pain free in 2 weeks!

This is what happened to me personally. After suffering for years I desperately tried everything, drugs, natural products, physiotherapy, acupuncture, magnets and nothing was of any real help. Finally I had relief in 2 weeks by taking shark cartilage that was specially processed to preserve the natural active ingredients. This is the kind we are now promoting. I realized then that there are over 50 million men and women that are battling the same illness and getting treatments that are not working well, otherwise we would not have this ongoing huge health problem. In the last 10 years we have helped tens of thousands of men and women to have less pain or no pain at all. This is a by-product of the food industry. No sharks are caught because of their bones/cartilage. Don’t let anybody #1 confuse you. Nick A. Jerch, President We have real EVIDENCE that it works. On our web site you find over 100’s of testimonials with full names and towns. All 100% true. Skeptics may call them. Here are some examples: ! Doctor suggested knee replacement after all his options failed with drugs and cortisone shots in knee and lower back. I recommend Bell Shark Cartilage to those millions suffering needlessly like I did for 40 years with arthritis in my knees. It's a shame that I was given drugs and injections all these years when a natural medicine could have spared me the endless torture day and night. Pat Laughlin, Coldwater, ON !My hip is 95% pain free. Pain killing drugs mask and Bell Shark Cartilage heals. Rebecca Hite, Oroville, CA!I tried another brand and pain came back. 2 weeks on Bell and pain is gone again. Gert Dupuis, Hanmer, ON!Cancelled knee replacement. I was in pain and limping. Have no more pain now. Can square dance for hours. Anton Melnychuk, Porcupine Plain, SK. We supply EVIDENCE!

Troupe honours and engages Community invited to join in Aboriginal Day festivities BY MICHELLE HOPKINS

Christine MacKenzie (left), Lori Sherritt-Fleming and Anastasia Hendry make up Kloshe’nem, a local aboriginal performance troupe, which is headlining this year’s National Aboriginal Day on June 19.

The local aboriginal community is coming together to celebrate its collective pride in its history and culture, and they encourage Richmondites to join them on Sunday, June 19. The Richmond Youth Service Agency’s (RYSA) Pathways program is hosting National Aboriginal Day and it promises to offer something for everyone, said Jelica Shaw, aboriginal program coordinator for Pathways Aboriginal Centre at RYSA. Last year, more than 350 people from all cultures came out to enjoy the festivities. “This is an important event to give our artists and dancers an opportunity to share their dances, drumming and culture with the rest of Richmond,” said Shaw, adding there are approximately 350 First Nations people living in Richmond. “We had one Asian man make an aboriginal mask and he told us how much fun he had … he then proceeded to go on stage and dance wear-

ing his mask.” Last year’s popular mask workshop was led by the Kloshe’nem, a locally based aboriginal performance and workshop troupe. This year the troupe is the headliner on the main stage. “Kloshe’nem means to honour and through our family friendly performances and workshops, we inform, elevate, celebrate and acknowledge First Nations culture by engaging people in our interactive performances,” said Lori SherrittFleming, co-producer, along with Anastasia Hendry of Kloshe’nem and the only nonnative in the troupe. “Kloshe’nem is very colourful and unique art form that encompasses many different art forms, including story telling and puppetry.” Sherritt-Fleming went on to say the troupe puts on workshops every week at a number of Lower Mainland schools and community centres. “We love to get people from the audience to participate with us by performing puppetry on stage with us while we story-tell,” she

added. “During this event, we will tell tales from the north west coast and it also involves sharing cultural artifacts.” National Aboriginal Day begins at 1 p.m. with an opening prayer and traditional presentation by Musqueam elder Larry Grant. There will be many presentations by the Aboriginal Youth Council and local dignitaries, as well as traditional singing and drumming groups. Kloshe’nem will also be putting on a puppet workshop from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. (space is limited). The RYSC’s Pathways program presents the fifth annual National Aboriginal Day in Richmond celebrating aboriginal community and culture on Sunday, June 19 from 1 to 3 p.m., in the Minoru Cultural Centre, 7700 Minoru Gate. This free event is open to all cultures. For more information or to volunteer, call Raven Barudin at 604271-7600 ext. 150, or email raven.barudin@rysa.bc.ca or visit the website at www. rysa.bc.ca.

The new Federal Conservative government has re-introduced its budget. New tax relief for family caregivers is in the budget, effective next year. The Family Caregiver Tax Credit is a 15% (non-refundable) tax credit on a maximum amount of $2,000. Persons with spouses or common law partners, as well as children and other dependants are eligible. This credit is in addition to the Disability Tax Credit already in existence. Also, the Medical Expense tax Credit has been increased. Caregivers who incur medical and disability related expenses for an elderly parent, or other financially dependant relative can now claim all their medical expenses (previously there was a $10,000 limit). Any person now providing caregiver services to their dependants should speak with an Accountant to see exactly how these tax credits may help.

How to find, and keep, friends Danielle Aldcorn FAMILY FUNCTION

interests to you is to do those interests. Once you are surrounded by potential friends, the second step is to smile, then take a risk and say something about yourself. Share a thought or a feeling and see how the person responds. If they share a personal thought or a laugh then you’re off to a good start. If they are not responsive just move on and try someone else. Don’t take it personally because it can’t be personal when they don’t know you. Once you get a friendly response, you can ask the potential friend an open ended question about them. People generally like to talk about themselves as long as it is not too personal. Open ended questions are ones that the person can’t simply respond yes or no to. For example, “Lisa, what made you interested in taking this class on Italian cooking?”

The next step is to listen, listen, listen. There is nothing worse than someone who asks a question then doesn’t actually care about the answer. When a potential friend shares ideas and feelings it is expected that you will contribute to the conversation reciprocally. This is where many people stumble because if we talk too much, the potential friend will find us self absorbed. If we talk too little, the potential friend may find us dull and hard to get to know. If a friendship starts to develop, it is important to accept it for what it is. Expectations that a friendship needs to be a certain way will only disappoint you. Friendships come in all sorts of forms. There are people you have lunch with at work, but never socialize with outside of work. There are childhood friends you e-mail regularly, but only see once a year. Each type of friendship has its benefits. Don’t rule it out because it’s not the inseparable best buddy scenario you thought it should be. Try not to take it personally if a friend has to cancel

plans last minute or forgets something important. If they do it every time then you may want to consider making a new friend, but if you have a long history with the friend and they screwed up a few times, try to focus on everything that you gain from the friendship rather than the disappointment. The day may come where you will need your friends to be extra patient and understanding. There does come a point when some friendships end, and that is fine. Sometimes it is simply a matter of drifting apart. Sometimes it is because the shared interest or mutual relationship that used to bond you no longer exists. Some friendships are toxic anyway so if a person is using, hurting, criticizing, or sucking you dry, it is better if the friendship ends. You can always make new friends. There are millions of people out there also looking for a kind and interesting person to share their time and maybe a laugh with. Danielle Aldcorn is a registered clinical counsellor with the Satori Integrative Health Centre in Richmond.

A friend is a person who knows you, likes you, and is as concerned for your welfare as you are for theirs. Typically we enjoy having friends for their company, conversation, and support. Being alone is one of the most frequent fears brought up in counselling and a lack of social support has reportedly been linked to an increased risk of heart disease, viral infections, and cancer. The problem for most people is that making and keeping friends is more difficult than it sounds. We are all looking for a friend who we can trust, depend on, and have a great time with. Simple right? Not really because even if you find a person who gets you and can overlook your minor imperfections, life is very hectic and makes it difficult to find time to actually experience the friendship with that person. In order to meet a new friend, the first step is to get out there. Join the club or register for the class you’ve been thinking about for ages. The easiest way to meet people who have similar

Pacific Coast honours longtime Seafair coach

Derek Chichak named association’s coach of the year A longtime Seafair Minor Hockey coach who wasn’t even expected to be behind the bench this season has been recognized with Pacific Coast Amateur Hockey Association’s top coaching award. Derek Chichak was presented the Bruce Allison Memorial Trophy, as PCAHA’s coach-of-the-year for the 2010-11 season, after guiding Seafair within an overtime goal of winning the Juvenile provincial championship. Following a successful three-year run in charge of Seafair’s top midget team, Chichak wasn’t planning on continuing his minor coaching career that began back in 1994 at the association’s initiation level. Even though his son cracked the line-up of the Junior “B” Richmond Sockeyes, Chichak agreed to take on the juvenile program and the team did just about everything except win the B.C. title. “Year in and year out, Derek has always been one of our association’s best coaches,” said Seafair executive member Ken Hamaguchi. “This not solely based on his win-loss record, but it is because of the passion, commitment and integrity he brings to all his teams. “This year he took a team that no one else wanted to coach. Not only did he make it a memorable year for his players on the ice, he made it equally memorable off of it

as well.” Chichak’s impressive coaching run includes winning a provincial title at the Bantam level as well as two other runner-up finishes. An outstanding stint at the Midget level included qualifying for the tier one provincial championships and winning back-to-back titles at the Richmond Minor Midget International Tournament. His first year in Juvenile saw him guide the Islanders to the flight one regular season title and the Pacific Coast championship. A memorable campaign ended with a loss to cross-town rival Richmond Minor in the provincial final. “Derek was prolific with his team email correspondence prior to each game or practice,” added his assistant coach Bob Walker. “The intent was to ensure the players remained engaged and committed to the team away from the rink. These emails were forms of inspirational messages, on ice strategies and player expectations for the next game or practice.” Also recognized at the PCAHA AGM was Len Cuthbert who received the Gold Puck Award for 10 years of service, along with the Pacific Coast Appreciation Award for his work with the regional association. Lawrence and Penny Talbot also received Diamond Pin Awards for five years of service.

A RUNNER'S MIND

The first time I heard of Dan Hill was when I was little and my mother had the radio playing in the background. I remember it still so well to this day — his signature song, ‘Sometimes When We Touch,’ which he received a Juno Award for in 1978. Hill is regarded as an internationally renowned author and singer-songwriter and in 1997 received a Grammy award for his production and songwriting on Celine Dion’s breakthrough CD, Falling Into You. Running has also been his passion and I had the privilege to do a phone interview with him about his running regime. Cancer June 21-July 22: Lie low, rest and recuperate. Be thoughtful, plan, seek advice, deal with government agencies or institutions, or corporate head offices. Your charitable and spiritual side remains prominent. Next week, you’re going to burst forth with a blaze of energy, so store it up now. Sunday’s romantic, but anyone who’s attractive Monday morning is also a quarrelsome type – fair warning! Tackle chores and health concerns Monday to Wednesday. Relationships can frustrate you Thursday to suppertime (so don’t pursue new ones) but this night and Friday bring sweet, even passionate harmony! Leo July 23-Aug. 22: Wishes can come true! You remain popular, optimistic, happy. Make and accept invitations (but keep them near in time – after June 20 you’ll tire of social involvements). The year ahead is very lucky for career, ambitions, etc. Use Sunday to ground this – to examine and/or shore up your foundations, your platform for launching an ambitious bid. For example, when you’re handling long days and career pressures, a supportive family is a good foundation. Or mapping out the right territory, or lining up allies. Tuesday/Wednesday are romantic, creative – love could reach a sweet climax! Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: The accent remains on ambition, status, prestige relationships. Show the boss (or parents, etc.) what you can do. Sunday’s great for puttering around the neighbourhood, reading a fat newspaper, calling friends, errands and paperwork. These need a diplomatic (but opportunistic) approach Monday a.m. You reach a climax and an “ending note” in career matters Tuesday/Wednesday – all is well. Perhaps a project matures. Study long-term income and investments Thursday: these will undergo change this decade – safety key. Thursday/Friday are romantic. Chores Saturday – practise safety!

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Aries March 21 - April 19: The accent continues on paperwork, messaging, errands, travel, news and casual friends. It’s a busy but not important time. Sunday’s full of mysteries and subconscious urges (so is good for seeing within or seeking critical advice). But these – and sex, finances – can meet irritation Monday. Wisdom, a gentle outlook creep in late Monday to late Wednesday – you might spend too much on travel, culture, education or a legal matter, but these things also come to a satisfying climax. Be ambitious Thursday/Friday. You’re popular Saturday, but driving, high tech are erratic. Taurus April 20-May 20: Continue to chase money. Buy sources of knowledge and co-operate with teachers. Relationships flow well Sunday, but they might run into friction Monday a.m. Ignore a financial or sexual decision/idea Monday night – these meet success Tuesday/Wednesday (although you might overspend for an investment). Be careful with ethical or legal “assumptions” (or travel ideas) Thursday to suppertime – the practical reality is far different. These matters flow with superb luck, though, Thursday night to pre-dawn Saturday. Be ambitious – but drive carefully, and forgive computers – Saturday. Gemini May 21-June 20: Your energy, charisma and effectiveness continue high. You’ll be given almost anything you ask for – but you need to be aware that asking for a partner, marriage, relocation, litigation or a contract could lead to restriction or unexpected solitude. But these are not necessarily bad. Relative solitude will come anyway, over the year ahead, as a blessing, a healing. Do ask for advice. Take this general attitude for the whole 12 months ahead: that you will, to whatever degree you can, sacrifice your own time/energy to support another (or others). This will bring good results.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: Gentle love, understanding, a wide view, far travel, legal affairs, higher education, religion, cultural involvements – the accent continues on these. During the 378 days ahead, you are going to face superb luck in investments, lifestyle changes, sex/intimacy, therapy/healing, and/or research. Use Sunday to see what you already have, and what you accept as true – these are not where your luck lies; these will remain static. Monday morning, a partner’s or competitor’s comment, even if irritating, or a spied opportunity, shows where your luck lies. Romance unpredictable Saturday. Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: Changes are still on the agenda, in lifestyle, commitments, intimacy, finances. But the biggest change involves your relationship sphere: it’s growing splendidly lucky. The year ahead will bring at least two opportunities to marry, form a business partnership, relocate, attract the public (e.g., as clients to your store) – almost all of these have a very beneficial money result! Remember for the past 15 years I kept saying that your true love phase would begin in 2011? This partnership year is part of that. Your energy’s good Sunday. Chase money midweek. Love late Thursday? Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: The emphasis remains on relationships, partnerships, opportunities, relocation, negotiation. Remember, this area needs a light touch until late August 2012. Actually marrying or relocating is not a good idea, unless “life brings it” – e.g., your employer transfers you. Depend more on your own efforts, carve out your own destiny, rather than chasing perceived “opportunities.” Lie low, rest Sunday/Monday. Your energy rises nicely midweek. Chase money Thursday/Friday (but expect barriers up to Thursday suppertime). Someone’s sweet, reliable. Travel Saturday – safety first!

June 12 - 18, 2011 Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: You face nine more days of drudgery work, so just keep on plugging. (As hinted earlier, perform only necessary work all year; don’t make machinery, chores, health or employment a primary focus.) Soon, fresh air, new opportunities and exciting relationships will enter. The last of these is especially significant, as the 12 months ahead bring splendid romantic openings! The same period creative and speculative luck. Optimistic risk is your friend, especially risk that, if it “wins,” will bring you more responsibility. Joy Sunday. Rest midweek, charge forth Thursday/Friday! Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: This is your last week of romance, creativity, pleasure and beauty for awhile – enjoy it while you can. Be ambitious Sunday. Higher-ups are still impatient, temperamental, so be diplomatic, especially Monday morning. Your popularity surges Tuesday/Wednesday! Flirtations, entertainment, optimism abound. A romance could swell to “mad love.” But retreat Thursday/Friday: meditate, contemplate, plan, deal with government agencies, and fulfill obligations. (All these will go better Thursday night and Friday, not before.) Your energy, charisma spring up Saturday – careful driving. Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: The accent continues on your domestic scene, on security, property, children, retirement, gardening, nature and nutrition. Luxuriate in laziness. Sunday/Monday are wise, gentle – contemplate the why’s, not the how’s. You might feel a tug-o-war between your ambitions and your home (or your tiredness) Tuesday/Wednesday. All’s well, whichever extreme you favour. Your hopes meet barriers Thursday daytime, but this night ad Friday could bring fulfillment, especially to home-related wishes. It’s a splendid time to decorate, landscape. Weariness returns Saturday – rest, plan. timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014
