10 rapid transit plans put on table for Surrey Study puts all options to public for input before politicians select winning design Tom Zytaruk

Ten major rapid transit plans are being put to Surrey residents for input into various transit expansion designs involving possible SkyTrain extensions, light rail line and rapid buses.
Stanley Cup craze
Catch Canucks games on Surrey’s huge screen
SURREY – Surrey’s about to get its game on. The Stanley Cup final series between the Vancouver Canucks and the Boston Bruins starts Wednesday and city hall has decided this city won’t be left out of the action. Canuckleheads (and Bruins fans, if they’ve got the cojones) can gather in Surrey’s Central City Plaza for each game in the series to catch the action on an enormous 170-square-foot television screen. Surrey’s parks and rec GM, Laurie Cavan, said the family-oriented events will be free and fun.
“All the games start at 5 p.m. and people are welcome to start arriving at 4. We’ll have a DJ to get the crowd pumped pre-game and roving entertainers,” Cavan said. “It’s a chance to get together and catch some team spirit. The Canucks are Canada’s team now and we’ll be there to cheer them on.” Gates open at 4 p.m. and everyone’s invited, Cavan said, adding a couple of wishes of her own. “That the Canucks win and the sun shines. Those are my two big wishes.”

SURREY – Want a glimpse of what rapid transit might look like in Surrey by as early as 2020? TransLink planners are presenting 10 major rapid transit plans for Surrey residents to peruse as they seek input into various transit expansion designs involving possible SkyTrain extensions, light rail line and rapid buses. The corporation isn’t looking for opinions on preferred routes, but rather, what they think of the designs as presented. “Eventually one of these options will be selected,” said Jeffrey Busby, manager of infrastructure planning for TransLink. “We’re interested in whether or not we’ve designed these 10 in a way that’s acceptable, so that we can do an evaluation of the 10. “We don’t want to do an evaluation based on a design that doesn’t have a basic level of acceptance.” The Surrey Rapid Transit Study, as it’s called, is sponsored by TransLink and the provincial Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure. It’s expected to be completed by the end of the year. It will then go to the politicians. “This is preliminary work,” Busby said. “We want to come out and consult primarily on design assumptions, and to the extent to which the public influences the designs we need to update that evaluation.” Design and construction would take four to six years to complete, Busby estimated. “What usually takes the longest is consensus on how to pay for it and what the right technology is.”
Ken Hardie
Jeffrey Busby
TransLink spokesman Ken Hardie added, “The two dynamics are time and money. The more you have of one, the less you need of the other.” Some major roadways, like King George Boulevard and Fraser Highway, play major roles in all 10 options. Scott Road, however, is currently “not viewed as the most promising candidate for rapid transit,” Busby said. “The Fraser Highway corridor seems to be a very significant travel corridor moving into the future.” In all cases, Surrey city centre is the hub from which the transit routes would extend. The package features options for rapid buses. In these cases, Busby said, it’s “assumed” that the buses would run down the centre of the streets along their own exclusive lane, with stations along the way. They’d run, from Surrey centre, out to Guildford Town Centre along 104th; to Langley city centre along Fraser Highway; and down King George Boulevard ending at 72nd Avenue in one option or continuing down the George to South Surrey, where it would then make a jaunt into White Rock along Johnston Road. see LANES › page 6

Surrey man stabbed SURREY – Mounties are investigating a stabbing they say appears to have happened during a fight between brothers. A 22-year-old Surrey man was stabbed in the stomach Sunday afternoon but is expected to recover from his injuries. The stabbing happened in the 13600-block of 104th Avenue at about 3:30 p.m. A 23-year-old man was arrested near the scene and is facing a charge of aggravated assault. Names had not been released by press time.

Surrey aiport screener busted SURREY – A Surrey man who works as a security screening officer at Vancouver International Airport is one of three men accused of drug trafficking. Ajitpal Singh Judge, 31, fellow screener Gurvinder Singh Pahl, 24, of Richmond and alleged drug courier Dylan Scott Green, 20, of Vancouver are charged with trafficking in MDMA, also known as Ecstasy. Green was arrested on May 9 after Canadian Border Service Agency officers stopped him in the postsecurity section of the U.S. departure gates. Police say he was carrying 14.77 kilograms of “suspected” MDMA in his backpack. On May 20 Judge and Pahl – both uniformed screening officers with the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority – were arrested. Both face charges of trafficking in a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, conspiracy to traffic in a controlled substance, and breach of trust. Pahl is also charged with failing to comply with a probation order. Green is charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking and conspiracy to traffic in a controlled substance. Tom Zytaruk

SURREY – The newest addition to Surrey’s hospital system – the $237-million Jim Pattison Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre – is officially open. Health Minister Mike de Jong was in town Monday morning to do the honours and was joined by the man who lent his name – and opened his wallet – to the place. Also there for the ceremony were dignitaries from the hospital foundation and the health authority along with Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts. The centre is the first of its kind in British Columbia, de Jong noted, and offers services not available elsewhere. He also thanked Pattison, who donated $5 million to purchase equipment, for his generosity before turning his attention to the staff and volunteers who made the whole thing possible. “The soul of this outpatient facility is the people who have helped make it happen and the people who will provide the services,” the minister told a crowd of about 100 gathered for the event. Surrey Memorial Hospital Foundation director Tracy Redies had some good news about the 100 Days to Give capital campaign for equipment. The foundation set out to match Pattison’s
donaton in a 100-day campaign. “We are delighted to tell you we have surpassed our $5-million goal,” Redies said. “I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to all the donors.” The $10 million raised by Pattison and other donors will be used to purchase specialized equipment for the centre in hopes of attracting leading doctors to Surrey.
That’s not true. Their promise to the people of Surrey was that it would be finished in 2009, so they’re two years late. The new centre is unique in that it offers diagnostic services like lab, X-ray, CT and MRI scans, biopsies, day surgery services and specialized medical programs all under the same roof. The centre will offer services currently unavailable in Surrey, such as a breast health clinic to diagnose suspected cancer in 21 days or less, urology services including extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy to treat kidney and other stones without invasive surgery, the Fraser Valley’s first comprehensive HIV/AIDS and
Hepatitis C clinic and more. The centre will relieve pressure on Surrey Memorial, which now handles nearly 134,000 outpatient visits per year and performs more than 94,000 outpatient diagnostic procedures. The majority of those cases will move to the new centre in Green Timbers. The 188,000-square-foot building was built to Gold standard LEEDS design with six operating rooms and 10 procedure rooms. The structure allows for 30 per cent expansion when needed, has more than 600 parking spaces and easy transit access. The centre will become fully operational by June 14. NDP MLA Jagrup Brar (Surrey-Fleetwood), however, took issue with the government’s claim the centre was built “on time and on budget.” “That’s not true. Their promise to the people of Surrey was that it would be finished in 2009, so they’re two years late,” Brar said. “Also, the original budget was $162 milllion. That rose to $237 million and that’s a significant difference, so it’s not on budget.” Brar also expressed concern medical staff will just be moved to the new centre from SMH and other facilities. “If we don’t have new staff, we won’t see any change in service delivery if all they’re doing is shifting people from one place to another.”

Lanes on 104th may need Province’s teachers are to give way for light transit poised to take strike vote ‹ from page 1
The options featuring light transit rail lines, some of which also incorporate the rapid buses in sections, basically involve variations on the same routes. Again, these trains would run at street level and likely in the middle of the roads, along their own tracks. Busby said that along some stretches, lanes for regular vehicles would have to be eliminated, such as along 104th Avenue in North Surrey. “There are a couple of places where there isn’t sufficient street space to actually accommodate transit and roads,” he explained. “So almost all of the options that use King George Boulevard, we can maintain four lanes of general traffic and two rapid transit lanes. Where we don’t have enough room is actually on 104th. Today, 104th is four lanes. To provide rapid transit on the street we would need to give two lanes for rapid transit, leaving two left over for 104th.” There are “not many” options for South
Surrey, he added. “But we’ve got a few options that go all the way into South Surrey. So for the southern stretch, a couple of kilometres, we’d need to reduce the lanes on King George.” Possible extensions for SkyTrain are from King George Station down the George to 72nd Avenue and from King George Station down Fraser Highway to Langley city centre. Projected costs for stations along to way are from $2 million to 5 million for the rapid bus and train stations up to $20 million per SkyTrain station. The consultation hearings got underway Monday night with an online “webinar.” More consultation hearings in Surrey will be held on Thursday, from 6 to 9 p.m., at Surrey’s Simon Fraser University campus, and at Guildford Sheraton Hotel on June 8, again from 6 to 9 p.m. and at the Newton Seniors Hall on June 14, from 6 to 9 p.m. Check out translink. ca/surreyrapidtransitstudy for more information.

SURREY – If there’s no progress at the negotiating table, teachers across B.C. are poised to take a strike vote between June 24 and 28, according to the B.C. Teachers’ Federation. A strike vote would pave the way for potential job action just as students start heading back to class in September. In a press release issued May 27, BCTF president Susan Lambert stated that if the membership takes job action in the fall, it would begin with a refusal to do administrative duties. “Parents might not even notice much of a change as teachers intend to continue serving our students in the classroom and communicating with parents about students’ progress,” she said. Lambert emphasized that teachers prefer to achieve a negotiated settlement. The teachers’ contact expires on June 30. Surrey school board vice-chair Shawn Wilson, the board’s representative to

the B.C. Public School Employers’ Association, a body that negotiates on behalf of school boards with the union, was unavailable for comment at Now press time. Laurae McNally Surrey school board chair Laurae McNally said it was inappropriate for her to comment on the issue, although she noted that talks are in the early stages. “We’re very early on in negotiations and lots can happen over the summer,” McNally said on an optimistic note. The two sides started negotiations for a new collective agreement on March 1. Top priorities identified by the BCTF at the bargaining table include class size and composition, increased wages and a return to local bargaining as the best solution to local issues.

SURREY – She’ll be walking instead of running, but expectant mom Amanda Galenzoski will be taking part in the 2011 Law Enforcement Torch Run aimed at raising the profile of Special Olympics. Make that White Rock RCMP Const. Amanda Galenzoski, who is also coordinator of the City by the Sea run. “Some of the Special Olympians will be running with us so it’s a really great event,” said Galenzoski, who is five months pregnant. From Saturday to June 10, law enforcement personnel from a wide range of agencies will lace up for the run to raise awareness and funds for Special Olympics B.C. athletes and programs. White Rock’s event takes place on Saturday and features a 4.5-kilometre run and a two-kilometre walk, starting at 3:30 p.m. Runners in other cities in the province might be a bit envious of White Rock’s hilly route.

The participants will be mustering at the McDonald’s parking lot at 152nd Street and 18th Avenue. The torch run will proceed southbound through South Surrey and White Rock and westbound along Marine Drive. Both the run and walk will end in the Marine Drive parking lot, about a half a kilometre west of the pier. “It’s pretty much downhill for most of us,” Galenzoski said, although she noted that runners will be faced with a notable incline known locally as “the hump” as they approach West Beach and the finish line. “Hopefully it will be a nice day,” she said. So far, about 25 participants have signed up for the event. The $20 fee includes a run T-shirt and the festivities will be capped off with a barbecue at the White Rock RCMP detachment. For more information about the torch run in White Rock, contact Galenzoski at amanda.galenzoski@rcmp_grc.gc.ca. Participants should contact Galenzoski by Friday to give her time to “get enough Tshirts and prepare for the barbecue.”

NEWS In court
Coerced or not, hubby loses annulment case Tom Zytaruk
Now staff twitter@tomzytaruk
VANCOUVER – A self-employed businessman who tried to annul his disastrous marriage with a filipina live-in caregiver whom he claimed would latch onto his ankles whenever he tried to leave the house has lost his case in court. The plaintiff, identified in B.C. Supreme Court documents only as R.H., claimed he was “coerced” into marrying the 33-year-old woman. Justice Miriam Maisonville agreed with the “sophisticated businessman” that he’d been subjected to coercion. “But I do not find it disabled him from freely consenting to their marriage,” she decided. The judge noted that someone alleging duress must prove they were so overwhelmed “that they were actually in a state of mental incompetence.” While she accepted R.H.’s claims his wife was “demanding and exhibited verbally abusive behaviour,” she found this was not
sufficient to override his consent to tying the knot. The court heard that the 30-year-old Jamaican man had immigrated to Ottawa with his family when he was five years old. He moved to Vancouver in 2007 and set up a labour consultancy business. He drove a BMW, owned property in Surrey and Vancouver, and was netting $15,000 a month when he met R.T., a 33-year-old livein caregiver from Philippines. While Maisonville accepted that R.T. had been “exerting pressure” on R.T., she said, “Marriage for immigration purposes alone does not by itself warrant granting an annulment.” R.H. told the court he was getting depressed and losing sleep because he was concerned his girlfriend had control over everything. Nevertheless, he married her on Dec. 18, 2009. He testified that she’d been pressuring him to marry her for months and the tipping point came when she told him “I will destroy you.” The couple separated on Feb. 28, 2010.

oon after she was sworn in as premier, I offered Christy Clark some advice in this column about changing some policies that proved controversial under her predecessor. I don’t believe for a moment that any premier follows my advice, of course, but I thought it might be interesting to see if Clark has agreed with any part of my “top 10” list and grade her accordingly: 1. Raise the minimum wage. Well, this was one of her first decisions soon after taking office and the first indication she was prepared to do things differently than Gordon Campbell. Grade: A 2. Review the province’s energy policy and BC Hydro’s proposed massive rate hikes. She has ordered a review of those rate hikes, but that’s the extent of any action on the energy file. Still, if a review means lower rate hikes that will be a good thing. Grade: C+
3. Review the legal bills arising from the BC Rail trial of two former political aides. She’s met this one halfway, by naming University of B.C. president Stanley Toope to review the policy of paying legal bills of civil servants. Grade: C+ 4. Repair the relationship with Children’s Representative Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond. Major strides have been made here, as Clark appointed a new minister (Mary McNeill) and, perhaps more importantly, a new deputy minister (Stephen Browne). The moves have been hailed by Turpel-Lafond and by Ted Hughes, the former deputy attorney-general who reviewed the province’s child protection system. Grade: A 5. Restore all the gaming grants to charities and non-profit organizations. This was one of the dumbest cost-cutting measures of the Campbell government, and Clark has partially undone much of it. Many, but by no means all, of those organizations are getting their grants. Grade: B. 6. Mend the relationship
with B.C.’s teachers. An early sign that things were turning around on this issue was the attendance at the annual convention of the B.C. Teachers’ Federation of Education Minister George Abbott, who became the first education minister of the B.C. Liberal government to attend that gathering. The government also declined to appeal a court ruling striking down its law on class sizes. A good start, but still not enough to suggest successful contract negotiations with the BCTF are possible. Grade: C+ 7. Change the funding formula for K-12 education. No change here, although that court decision on class sizes could have an impact on education funding. Grade: Incomplete 8. Review the hikes to medical service premiums and the carbon tax as part of the “families first” agenda. So far, not a peep here. Grade: F
9. Explore using revenues from the carbon tax to at least partially fund public transit. Clark has indeed agreed to consider this approach within a couple of years. Grade: a tentative C+ 10. Finally, figure out a solution to stop fares on BC Ferries from continuously going up and up. Clark’s government has introduced legislation to cap fare hikes until a review of the entire ferry system is completed by BC Ferries Commissioner Gord McAtee. Clark appears to be buying time here, hoping to minimize ferry fare hikes as an election issue. At the end of the process, she’ll have to increase the government’s ferry subsidy anyway. Grade: C+ It’s interesting to note that all 10 of my suggestions could probably be found in an NDP campaign platform (indeed, my column was “retweeted” by an NDP
MLA at the time) and Clark has adopted most of them to some degree, demonstrating there is indeed a new sheriff in town who is substantially different than the previous one. It should also be noted that Clark adopted some advice I humbly wrote in this space a couple of weeks back: she has proposed to chop the rate of the HST by two points, as well as offer more HST rebates (she calls them “transition cheques”) to more British Columbians. I suggested taking those actions were the only things that could give the HST a fighting chance to pass

muster in the upcoming referendum. Indeed, an Ipsos-Reid poll taken for Global News shows support for the tax is now in a dead heat with the opposition to it. Just a few months back, it seemed inconceivable that voters would warm up to the HST (when it was first introduced, polls indicated opposition to it was running about 9:1). But, way back then, it seemed inconceivable that Christy Clark would be the next premier of B.C.

Booze industry should shoulder social costs The Editor, Re: “How to get tough on drunk drivers,” the Now viewpoint, May 26. Kudos to columnist Harvinder Sandhu for blowing the whistle on relatives who left parties drunk and drove home. Unfortunately, that approach doesn’t cover the large percentage of people who get behind the wheel impaired after drinking the night away at bars, clubs and pubs. In these establishments, drinkers routinely reach levels of intoxication without the benefit of counsel from more sober friends, directing them to take a taxi or bus. They often remain unfazed as to the reality of their being incapable of driving competently. Drunk drivers deserve no mercy. But it seems hypocritically convenient for “tsktskers” to lay all the blame on them for the alcohol-related carnage on our roads. Fairness dictates that all who represent the beverage alcohol industry (producers and sellers) deserve to share responsibility for each and every traffic injury/death linked to the consumption of beverage alcohol. Shouldn’t they also be held accountable for the collateral damage done through the consumption of their spirits? It seems illogical that those who profit from an industry that creates and perpetuates so many social problems should completely escape accountability. Certainly, the purveyors of booze should
shoulder a hefty percentage of the nation’s health and welfare costs incurred as a result of social drinking – staggering costs that are borne solely by the taxpayer. Rick Crompton, Surrey
Harvinder’s column is very educational The Editor, Thanks to the Now for Harvinder Sandhu’s column. As a Caucasian, I want to learn what I can about the Punjabi community. When we learn about a different culture, we come to understand our own better. Keep those columns coming, Harvinder. Ed Griffin, Surrey
Hydro’s smart meters are massive blunders The Editor, Recently, a new kid has appeared on the technological block. And, oh joy, Surrey could likely be one of BC Hydro’s seven provincial “hubs” for this technology.
Cellphone towers are nothing to fear
BC Hydro’s misguided plan to deploy wireless “smart meters” throughout B.C. is being inaccurately promoted as a “green initiative” and launched without proper education, meaningful community input or ethical options. It is shaping up to be a blunder of monumental proportions. Similar “smart meter” initiatives in the U.S. have, with much opposition, resulted in city-wide moratoriums, increasing in number. Here, the meters are upon us, but due to the seeming complicity of government, industry and media, few citizens are aware, let alone prepared to speak intelligently about, or pursue, options. As yet, most of us in B.C. still have our attention focused elsewhere. There is no doubt in my mind that Hydro’s decision to buy into so-called “smart meters” and “smart grids” is a huge and damaging mistake on so many levels: safety, security, human health, cost, environmental impacts and human rights. My own cardiac arrhythmia is only one of many health conditions that are incompatible with wireless metering. The impossibility of avoiding wireless influences in the community will now expand to our personal space. BC Hydro has suggested that people with health issues should move off-grid. What kind of option is that?
The Editor, Re: “‘We’d rather not have’ cellphone towers,” the Now, May 24. So Deltans would rather not have any cellphone towers. Why? Have they put their cellphones down? Or they’d rather freeload off others? Radiation is all around us 24/7 and there is more of it all the time. There have been high-profile cases, like the Tsawwassen high-voltage lines and the airport full-body scanners, not to forget the indeterminate case of the cellphones right next to your brain. People are understandably spooked. Some of this has turned into hysteria. Unlike longer-distance microwave systems, the cellphone towers put out relatively small amount of power. This is due to the nature of the cellphone networks. They work in small areas, called cells. Hence the name cellphone. It is like a honey comb. You see lot of these towers around. They hand your call from one to the next wherever you may be travelling. This design was necessitated by the small number of available frequencies and their reuse every few cells away.

Holy smoke! Church thanks firefighters SURREY – Firefighters will be honoured during a special church service dedicated to them on Saturday. The Surrey Seventh-Day Adventist Church, which has a congregation of about 400, will be honouring the smoke eaters for their “selfless” service. “We’re working to be a church in the community who recognizes people in the community... the outstanding work that they do,” said Pastor Noel Lazarus. “We do appreciate their service.” The church is located at 8520 132nd St. The service will begin at 10:15 a.m.

SURREY – Shoppers at a Surrey mall encountered a flash mob of nearly 600 Chimney Hill Elementary students dancing for the environment Thursday. As Katy Perry’s hit song “Fireworks” began to play, the kids – all clad in green T-shirts bearing the slogan “Go Green” – filled the area in front of the Central City food court and began to dance. Why “Go Green?” “Social responsibility is one of our school goals,” explained Chimney Hill principal, Chris Baldry. “We have walk to school days a couple of times a month and we really encourage students, parents really, to park their cars and walk to school.” Baldry said the idea of a flash mob came from Grade 6 teacher Heather Briske. She and Baldry started kicking the idea around and decided to see if other teachers were into it. “They were all on board with it, so we started to think about where we could showcase it,” Baldry said. They talked to the Central City management, who gave the plan a green light. In fact, Baldry said, the mall helped cover the cost of buying the T-shirts and hiring buses to carry the students to the site.

Upcoming Traffic Pattern Changes Beginning on June 3, and continuing for approximately one year, a number of temporary and permanent traffic pattern changes will take effect at the 160 Street Interchange in Surrey. These traffic pattern changes are required to complete the construction of the new 160 Street and 104 Avenue overpasses and to reconstruct the intersections of 160 Street and 104 Avenue to the north and south of Highway 1.
Artist explores house, home Thursday
While these traffic pattern changes are in place, all major traffic movements will be retained; however, there will be significant changes for the travelling public. These traffic pattern changes will be well-signed. Motorists are reminded to use caution and watch for new directional signs and flag persons in this area.
How do artists envision house and home? It’s a central question for artist Kathy Mezei to discuss when she speaks Thursday, June 2 during

Dr. Brian Gluvic
Naturopathic Physician
Glynis de Crewe,
I get pain frequently. Headaches, joint stiffness, numbness what can I do?
Most pain or myofascial/muscle pain is related to trigger points in the muscles. Trigger points, or small contractions knots in the muscle, result in pain and will lead to symptoms such as headaches, neck and jaw pain, back pain, tennis elbow, carpal tunnel, fibromyalgia, tendonitis, bursitis, arthritis and other myofascial pain conditions. By releasing trigger points in the body, muscles become strong and relaxed, circulation is restored and the tissue is once again flooded with oxygen and nutrients. Dr. Rod is trained in Trigger Point Injection Therapy for Myofascial Pain by Dr. Hal Blatman, the Clinical Director of the Blatman Pain Clinic in Cincinnati, OH. Dr. Blatman is Board Certified in Pain Management at Bethesda Hospital and also Past President of the American Holistic Practitioners Association. He was trained by Dr. Janet Travell, MD, personal physician to John F. Kennedy and founder of Trigger Point Therapy and The American Academy of Pain Management. Injections are used that are safe and holistic unlike cortisone that can cause numerous side effects.

Anti-inflammatory medications (Ibuprofen, Naproxen) are often prescribed to reduce pain, but these ultimately prevent the body’s natural healing process, leading to more damage. With time, surgery is recommended as a last resort. An effective alternative to drugs and surgery is Prolotherapy. Prolotherapy involves injecting a natural solution into the area of the damaged tendons and ligaments. This stimulates an inflammatory response, leading to growth and strengthening of the tissue and ultimately reducing pain and restoring motion. The number of treatments required is commonly between 2 and 10, depending on the area affected. Most extended health care plans cover prolotherapy.

Q How long do dentures last? A
Who is responsible for property taxes? For buyers at this time of the year, the payment of property taxes can be a very confusing topic. Property taxes are paid for the calendar year, from January 1st to December 31st. Property taxes are officially due on July 2nd. If, at the time of the signing the documents, the seller has not paid the property taxes for 2011, then the buyer is responsible for paying the property taxes for 2011. Buyers should receive credit on the Statement of Adjustments from the seller for the portion of the year that the seller occupied the property in 201. For example, if all adjustments for the purchase are done on June 16th, the buyer should receive a credit on the Statement of Adjustments for the property taxes from January 1st to June 16th. The buyer then pays a full year of tax and can claim a Home Owners Grant if they occupy the property as their principal residence. The fact that you are paying a portion of the property taxes with your mortgage payments can be misleading in the first year of ownership. Please make sure that your 2011 taxes are paid in order to avoid penalties.

This is a very common question, and the answer depends on many things. If the dentures are worn in your pocket, they will probably last forever, however dentures are and were meant to be worn in the mouth. The best thing denture wearers can do if their denture is more than 3 years old and it has not been looked at by a dental professional, is to call our office. I’d be happy to see you and give you some complimentary advice. Don’t wait until you feel like something is wrong - that’s how irreversible damage to the structure that supports the denture can occur, and that is exactly what we would like to prevent. Call us today for your complimentary consultation.

SURREY — At the age of 25, life was looking rosy for Brigitte Cuthill. Newly engaged, she was happily planning a latesummer wedding. Then, quite suddenly, she lost a lot of weight without dieting — about 30 pounds in just three weeks. “I thought,‘Yeah!’” Cuthill said. She was pleased she’d be looking her best on her big day. But a visit to a doctor and a round of tests revealed that Cuthill had Hodgkin’s lymphona, a cancer of the lymph tissue found in the lymph nodes, spleen and other areas. Cuthill was scheduled for surgery. Surgeons removed her spleen and she embarked on nine months of chemotherapy treatment. The wedding was called off. As she shares her story 25 years later, Cuthill said the rapid speed of the discovery and diagnosis of her disease was a blessing in a strange way, in that it helped her cope. “It was just bang, bang, bang. I never thought to breathe in between, it was just so fast,” she said. Cuthill, a Fort Langley resident, said the gravity of the news hit her family harder than she took the news herself. “My sister couldn’t even say the c-word,” Cuthill said, referring to her cancer diagnosis. Since her recovery, she’s been having annual checkups and is in fairly good health. Next month, Cuthill will be among the many cancer survivors helping to promote the Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, held at Cloverdale Millennium Park
Amphitheatre on June 11. The annual event, held on different dates in communities across Canada, celebrates cancer survivors, remembers and honours loved ones lost to the disease and raises funds to help in the fight against all cancers. Opening ceremonies get underway at noon and the event includes a number of other ceremonies and rituals that extend into the night. A relay team participant in the past, Cuthill will be at the event this time to offer words of encouragement and support to those newly diagnosed with the disease and still fighting. Her own stubborn refusal to be beaten by the disease was strengthened through the love and support of her family and friends and she wants to share that kindliness. Even in her darkest moments, Cuthill remained positive about her future. “I just never thought it was going to beat me,” she said.“I never thought twice, that’s it, that’s me, done.” Caitlin Berndt, co-chair for Surrey’s Relay for Life, has a special reason to support the cause. Her godchild, Sarah Smith, was diagnosed with choroids plexus carcinoma, a rare malignant brain tumour, at the age of four and has since passed away. Berndt, a long-time volunteer with the Canadian Cancer Society, is on a mission to help raise as much money as possible to help beat cancer and she’s urging the public to support the local Relay for Life. Those interested in registering or donating for this year’s relay can find out more at www. relaybc.ca/surrey or by calling Carissa at 604533-1816.

Racing against the runners
A moment of selfrealization sent Fleetwood Park’s Keffri Neal on a record-breaking path Michael Booth
Now staff twitter@surreynowsports
A breakthrough moment at the 2008 B.C. Summer Games in Kelowna convinced Fleetwood Park’s Keffri Neal to push himself harder in track and field’s middle distance races. (Photo: KEVIN HILL) Okanagan, Neal threw himself into training under the guidance of Surrey Athletics coach Brian Onstad. His hard work was rewarded with a Fraser Valley junior boys 1,500-metre title as a Grade 10, which was followed by an impressive 10th place showing at the provincials for the 800m despite racing against rivals up to two years older. Last year as a Grade 11, Neal built on that success. In the Fraser Valley senior boys 800m final, he finished second with a time that broke a 10-year-old record for the event. At
the B.C. meet two weeks later, Neal posted the fastest time in the preliminary heats before finishing second in the final behind Unity Christian’s Travis Vugteveen. Neal’s results are a product of mind and body. In races he taps into his own personalized GPS service and instinctively knows where he is, where he wants to go and the directions for how to get there. This includes an innate understanding of not only what is happening around him, but an uncanny knack for assessing the intentions of
other runners in the race. “I try and push myself in my workouts so I can learn my limits for races so I know when I should make my move and when I should kick,” he said. “I try and learn from my opponents so I know what to expect from them and what I have to do to have my best race possible.” Longtime Fleetwood Park track coach Nancy Champagne said Neal’s ability to size see Fleetwood Park › page 22

Keffri Neal knows exactly the moment when his whole life changed. The gifted Fleetwood Park Grade 12 runner heads into the B.C. High School Track and Field Championships in Burnaby this weekend as one of the guys to beat in the middle distance events, but this was not always the case. Quiet and withdrawn off the track, Neal rarely made much noise on it either despite training in the sport since he was in Grade 6. He admits his goal was always to try and make it into the top three in a given race and if that happened, he was content. In the summer of 2008, Neal headed up the Coquihalla Highway for the B.C. Summer Games and when he returned from Kelowna, he had a silver medal in his pocket and a new mindset between his ears. “When I won silver at the Summer Games, I realized I was up there with the top people in B.C. and I shouldn’t be satisfied with just making it into the top three,” he said. “I realized I had the potential to start winning some of those races. That was totally new for me because I hadn’t had anything like that happen to me before. It was a new way of thinking and it took me a while to get used to it.” Encouraged by his showing in the

Most Sundays I am all over the computer looking down the leaderboards hoping I can find a Canadian in contention. I don’t care if it’s the LPGA, PGA, Nationwide or Canadian Tour, where we have found some success. Week after week it’s becoming more and more difficult to find Canadians in contention. So we wait it out, wait for the next Mike Weir, the next Lorie Kane, the next, well you know what I mean. However this past week was far from dull. Luke Donald, who has been playing for over a decade, went to number one in the world on Sunday. Lee Westwood had the title but when he went into the water in the first playoff hole with Donald in the BMW Championship in Wentworth, England his hold on the title went with it. So the number one player in the world is a golfer that not too many years ago faced the question “Sid he have enough desire and fire in his belly to be at the top of the heap?” Now he is. The seniors had their PGA Championship, where Ontario’s Rod Spittle finished 31st and Victoria’s Jim Rutledge 34th, and to the surprise of only a few, Tom Watson at 61 was the winner. It is rare when a player over 60 wins on the Champions Tour, even though Tom for many decades was among the best in the world, simply because golfers at 61 don’t win. There he was: Tom Watson, the man who only two years ago had a great shot to win the British Open, holding the trophy high. There’s none more resilient than Watson but in the press tent as he savoured the win he said, “If this is the last tournament I win I am happy to go out with this one.”
To finish off our surprises Isabelle (Izzy) Beisiegel qualified for men’s Canadian Tour. This is not a new act for the 32-year-old; she has been attempting to play golf with the men for a lot of years, and up until this past weekend had failed to qualify for one of the men’s tours. She, along with 39 other golfers, played in horrible conditions at Morningstar in Parksville last week as the rain poured down on the qualifying tournament. Yes, she plays from the men’s tees at 7,000 yards and the course with the rain must have felt a lot longer. Unfortunately, we will not get to see her in the Times Colonist Canadian Tour opener this week in Victoria as she heads to L.A. for a rest before teeing it up at the Western Championship at Rivershore Golf Course in Kamloops next week. If you want to take this to its what-if conclusion: if she should collect enough points on the order of merit list on the Canadian Tour she could qualify for the PGA Tour’s Canadian Open at Shaughnessy. Now wouldn’t that be interesting? Chances are slim that will happen, but for now her qualification is a first on a major men’s tour. Have a good week.

Surrey gymnast tops in Canada Surrey’s Shallon Olsen stole the show at the Canadian Gymnastics Championships in Halifax last weekend. up a situation and then adapt his abilities to the challenge is something that sets him apart from other runners. “The thing that I am most impressed with him is his intuitiveness,” she said. “He knows in any given race how much he needs, what everybody else has got and how to read that and use it to his advantage. He reads it better than any kid I’ve ever coached. “It’s something that will take him far because it’s not a case where he just has the physical athletic ability, he also has a racer’s mentality. Some people are runners and some people are racers and Keffri is definitely a racer.” In February of this year, Neal travelled south of the border for the early season Brooks Personal Record Invitational indoor meet. Although he came into the event with one of the slowest personal best times of anyone in the field for the 800m race, Neal pulled
away with 100 metres to go and nobody was able to catch him. His winning clocking of one minute, 50.91 seconds was the fastest for a high school runner in 2011 at that time. “That was really amazing because I didn’t expect that to happen,” he said. “To be No. 1 in North America at the time was really huge for me. It really inspired me because it happened so early in the season and I knew I would be running even faster later on.” Neal has accepted a scholarship offer from the University of Kentucky but he has remained focused on his track goals. Earlier this month at the Fraser Valley championships in Coquitlam, Neal reset the 800m record at 1:50.72 when he outlasted White Rock Christian standout Sean Keane — a future teammate at Kentucky — in a race that was one of the highlights of the meet. “I broke the old record last year but I didn’t set the new record because I
finished second,” Neal said. “It’s a really fast time and I don’t think I could have done it without Sean pushing me hard in that race.” Neal now turns his attention to the final meet of his high school career, the provincials in Burnaby this weekend. He has never won gold in a senior event at the B.C.s and he admits the pressure will be building as the meet gets closer. The cautious side of Neal is evident when he initially described his hopes for the 800m and 1,500m events at the meet. “I’m going to run both races but it will be tough because of the heats that come before them,” he said quietly. “Hopefully I can finish in the top three in both races.” He pauses and then the new, improved Neal — the one who returned from Kelowna almost three years ago — speaks up, adding: “The best outcome I could want is to win both of them. We’ll see what happens.”

He leaves behind his mother Myrtle, brother George (Mary), sister Carol (Gus,) his wife Lois of 41 years, children: Angela (Jason), Duncan (Terry), Matthew (Megan), seven grandchildren: Alanna, Taylor, Heli, Kaden, Nakita, Leland, Jett, and all nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends. All will miss his love and support. Ken loved nothing more than to spend time with his family and enjoyed the simple things in life. The family will be holding a funeral service at Star of the Sea Parish in White Rock on June 1, 2011 at 11:00 am. There is no burial after the service. There will be a small gathering for immediate family afterwards. At the request of the family, please do not send flowers. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to all those who have given us their support in this time of need.

Like puzzles? Then you'll love Sudoku. This mind-bending puzzle will have you hooked from the moment you square off, so sharpen your pencil and put your Sudoku savvy to the test!
REAL ESTATE 6008-30
Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
