Big-name acts booked for Fusion Festival Tom Zillich
Now staff twitter@tomzillich
SURREY – This summer’s edition of Fusion Festival will feature reggae-rock band Bedouin Soundclash and British pop/R&B singer Jay Sean, the Now has learned. The free, fourth annual event happens July 16 and 17 at Holland Park, adjacent to the Central City tower. Diverse sounds on multiple concert stages are the focus of the two-day fest, along with a dizzying array of food and vendors from around the world. The Juno Award-winning Bedouin Soundclash, based in Toronto, is best known for its feel-good hits “When the Night Feels My Song” and “Walls Fall Down.”
Sean, meanwhile, is known internationally for appearances at highprofile TV awards shows and his platinum hits “Do You Remember” and “Down.” Last time around, the fest attracted close to 90,000 people who ate, Jay Sean danced and soaked up the mid-July sun. The event, presented by the City of Surrey in association with Coast Capital Savings and other corporate sponsors, is billed as B.C.’s largest multicultural celebration.

SURREY – Hockey fever at Central City plaza is proving to be contagious. Thousands gathered at the site to cheer on the Vancouver Canucks as they beat the Boston Bruins 3-2 Saturday night in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup final. “It was definitely the biggest crowd we’ve seen at that new site,” Surrey RCMP spokesman Cpl. Drew Grainger said Monday. “We saw a crowd of 3,000-plus celebrants. It filled the site to capacity.” City officials created the celebration site, complete with a giant screen, to allow hockey fans to watch the game at a safe and fun venue. Grainger said there was no trouble with drinking or rowdyism at the plaza as most of the fans were families, many of them residents from the Whalley area. “It was great family environment and everybody enjoyed the game immensely,” Grainger said. Granger said Surrey RCMP has a few dozen officers assigned to patrol the celebration site and the surrounding area to keep things in check. About 5,000-plus people gathered at Canuck Corner at the Surrey/North Delta border. The busy intersection at Scott Road and 72nd Avenue has been a popular gathering spot for celebrating hockey fans for years now. At the conclusion of every winning game, police have been closing the intersection until the crowd disperses. Grainger said only two arrests have been made there during post-game
We want to see you in all your Canuck-fever glory. Send pics to edit@thenownewspaper.com celebrations, and liquor pour-outs have been minimal. Grainger said one underage drinker was arrested after Saturday night’s game but was later released without charge to the care of his parents. That site is patrolled jointly by Surrey RCMP and Delta police. As the Stanley Cup series progresses, Grainger said police expect the crowds to swell and police will be beefing up staffing levels accordingly. Overall though, hockey fans have been on their best behaviour during the Canucks playoff run. “Celebrants continue to enjoy themselves responsibly.”

Teen’s murder trial opens
Boy accused of stabbing man as he chased suspects in cellphone muggings Tom Zytaruk
Now staff twitter@tomzytaruk
NEW WESTMINSTER – A 16-year-old mugging suspect accused of stabbing a Fleetwood dad as the man chased him over fences and through backyards is being tried
for second-degree murder and robbery in B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster. The boy, who was 14 at the time, cannot be identified as he is being tried under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. The publication ban also extends to adolescent witnesses who are called to testify. Sam McGowan, 42, was stabbed once in the heart and collapsed on a front lawn in the 14800-block of 90th Avenue on Aug. 5, 2009, after chasing a teen who, along with another boy, was suspected of having just mugged two other boys for their cellphones.
McGowan, whose son had been with one of the robbery victims, died in his girlfriend Michelle Proulx’s arms less than a block from their home. McGowan “died a hero,” Proulx said at the time. During her opening remarks Monday, Crown prosecutor Jodie Harris told the jury it can expect to hear testimony from bystanders and area residents who had also chased the accused. A knife with McGowan’s blood on it was found in bushes near an empty lot. Harris said the jury will hear the teen was
hit several times by his captors before they turned him over to Surrey RCMP. The Crown is expected to call 15 witnesses, with Proulx among them. She said outside court Monday that it was 22 months to the day since McGowan was killed. She said it’s been “just treacherous” waiting for the trial, which opened Monday. “People have been telling me with time things get better,” she said. “It’s not true. The hurt doesn’t go away.”

New library will let you ‘check out’ expert Marisa Babic
Now staff twitter@marisababic
SURREY – No time to read the book? “Check out” an expert and chat about your topic of interest with him or her over coffee. Library patrons looking for information at Surrey’s futuristic new $30-million library in City Centre slated to open in September will be able to check out an expert, the same as a book. Melanie Holden, deputy librarian with Surrey Public Library, says experts in various fields have offered to volunteer their services to the library as part the new “living library” concept. Library users will be able to request an
expert based on their topic of interest and library staff will try to match them up. “We’ll find them, bring them to the library and you can check them out and go have coffee with them,” Holden explained. Holden said the program exists in other cities, but it will be a first for Surrey. “It’s just a really great way for people to connect, for people to learn by talking to someone and asking questions,” she said. Holden said the library is looking for volunteers interested in sharing their expertise to sign up for the program. Despite the popularity of ebooks and other electronic devices, Holden said the new library will be stocked with a large selection of old-fashioned books, roughly
Surrey’s new City Centre library will offer some innovative new programs. 60,000 volumes. “Circulation is going up,” she noted. But there will be a strong emphasis on technology and the resources will include 80 computers. As part of its more interactive concept, the new library will also offer writers workshops hosted by local writers. As well, the City of Surrey has signed a lease with SFU that will see the university
rent three classrooms on the library’s fourth floor for continuing studies courses. The plans include courses in English language, career transition, arts, history and culture, community and urban planning and others. “It’s more about people spaces and learning spaces,” Holden said of the new library model.

We are pleased to announce that Surrey is now collecting mattresses for recycling.
Mattress Collection Challenges
Surrey’s Response...Recycle It!
On January 1, 2011, Metro Vancouver placed a disposal ban on mattresses as they are operationally difficult to handle and recyclable when properly disassembled. Mattresses disposed of as garbage cannot be compacted – consuming a large amount of landfill space. In addition, the springs within mattresses often become tangled in equipment causing costly repairs. Customers that bring mattresses to regional transfer stations for disposal as garbage are charged $20/unit and are limited to only four (4) mattresses per load.
While Surrey had consequently stopped collecting mattresses via the Large Item Pickup Program as a result of the Metro Vancouver imposed disposal ban, the City has developed a process to recycle old unwanted mattresses. The City of Surrey will accept mattresses and box springs via the Large Item Pickup Program at no additional cost to residents. The collected mattresses will be delivered to a mattress recycling facility where they will be segregated into different materials and shipped to remanufacturing facilities to be processed into new reusable products.
How to Arrange Collection 1. Call Emterra Environmental at 604-635-5478 2. On the day of your appointment (or the evening before), place your mattress/boxspring at your curb. Ensure that your mattress is at the curb by 7:30am. * Please note that this program is available to households that are on the City’s door-to-door waste collection program. Mattresses or box springs will count towards your annual large item pickup limit of 4 items/calendar year.

Council right to refuse cabbie due to sex charges: judge Tom Zytaruk
Now staff twitter@tomzytaruk
VANCOUVER – A Surrey cab driver who has been accused of committing multiple sexual assaults both on and off the job tried unsuccessfully to have Surrey city council’s decision not to renew his licence overturned in B.C. Supreme Court. Justice Peter Rogers upheld council’s denial following a hearing in Vancouver. “It is clear that the City of Surrey wishes to not have taxi drivers on its streets who attract serial allegations of sexual assault,” Justice Peter Rogers said, in the case of cabbie Nasir Ahmed. Ahmed has not been found guilty of any sexual assault. The chain of events began with the Surrey RCMP refusing to renew Ahmed’s chauffeur’s licence last August, shortly after it expired. Without the permit, Ahmed can’t earn a living as a cab driver in Surrey. Ahmed had argued before Rogers that he’s never been found guilty of a crime other than a credit card-related conviction. He also argued that his driving record doesn’t suggest he’s a “menace” on the road. “Mr. Ahmed’s position was that, in the absence of criminal convictions, it was not reasonable for the council to conclude that he had committed these assaults and was therefore unsuitable to drive a taxi in the city,” Justice Rogers explained. But the “flaw” in the cabbie’s argument, he added, “is that it attacks the very thing that the council was elected to do,” namely, set public policy. “As noted, that policy is that persons who, among other things, attract complaints but not necessarily convictions of sexual assault are not suitable for driving cabs.” tzytaruk@thenownewspaper.com
Delta man killed in crash DELTA – A 19-year-old man from Delta is dead after a car crash in Harrison on the weekend. At about 7:30 p.m. Saturday a Honda Civic hit a parked car and power pole on Rockwell Road. All three occupants were taken to Royal Columbian Hospital, and the Delta man – a passenger – died of his injuries. Alcohol and speed are believed to be factors, according to police.
Fire displaces 13 families SURREY – A fire in the 14900-block of 108th Avenue in Surrey displaced a number of families Saturday. The early morning fire, in the north stairwell of a three-storey apartment building, prompted the evacuation of about 13 families, who were given temporary shelter at the Guildford recreation centre. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, but investigators say it is suspicious.
Girl OK after being hit by bus SURREY – The little girl who was hit by a school bus last Thursday is still in hospital, but doing quite well. The five-year-old has broken bones, but no head injuries, as was initially feared. She is expected to make a full recovery. The girl was hit as she was crossing the street near Hjorth Road Elementary in Guildford just before 5 p.m. The full-size yellow Surrey Pentecostal Assembly school bus hit the girl while she was crossing 148th Street near 105th Avenue with another child and a caregiver. The girl was flown to hospital by air ambulance. Surrey RCMP Insp. Dave Attfield said speed doesn’t appear to have been a factor. “Weather condition and driver inattention are being looked at as possible contributing factors,” Attfield said on Thursday.

Maria Catroppa
NEW WESTMINSTER – A Surrey senior who stabbed his wife 126 times has been found guilty of second-degree murder. Sebastiano Damin, 76, will be back in B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster on Friday for a sentencing hearing in which his eligibility to apply for parole will be set. At best, he can hope for 10 years, although he
still faces the mandatory life sentence a murder conviction carries. Damin killed 69-year-old Maria Catroppa, his wife of 11 years, inside the couple’s gated Monta Rosa townhouse in Fleetwood on Nov. 24, 2009. Outside the courtroom, one of Catroppa’s daughters, Jay Tuason, told the Now she felt the verdict was “not enough, but it will do.” “It’s not going to bring mom back, but it’s the best what we could do for her.”

NEWSPAPER.COM
Attention Lower Mainland Home Owners: 56 of you are about to make an important financial decision...
“Frustrated Contractor ‘Giving Away’ $4946.00 Furnaces for $1181 with Off-Season Central Air ...” (“This is the Hottest AND Coolest Deal of the Century” ... especially if your furnace is over 8 years old) Dear Friend I’m about to make you a deal that’s hard to refuse if you’ve got an “older” (and probably less than optimally efficient) furnace. I’ll replace your old furnace AND heat pump as a “package deal” for at least $3136.00 less than you would pay any other time of the year. Sound too good to be true? It’s not and here’s why. I’m making you what sounds like an unbelievable offer because it actually makes good sense for my business. And you come out a winner, as well! You see, I know from experience that in my slowest months I actually end up losing money ... then I have to spend the rest of the year trying to make up for it. Right now, I have no reason to believe 2011 will be any different.
with the manufacturer, and then committing to buying 56 systems outright, I got BOTH the furnace AND the heat pump at a price that would have made Sam Walton proud. This means when you buy one of these 56 new, premium-quality heat pumps I will “give” you the furnace and ask you to pay only the $1181 in labor it costs to install your furnace. Pick up your phone right now Simply call me at 946-1000 at anytime so I can come out and measure your home (to see if I’ve got the proper size unit). Remember ... I’ve got only 56 matched systems in 3 sizes so you’ll want to let me know VERY SOON that you’re interested. When these 56 systems are gone, they’re gone, and this offer is null and void. Call me right now so we can get the ball rolling!
That’s why I’ve decided to give up trying to make a profit during these months and minimize my losses ... so I can come out ahead the rest of the year.
As part of the deal, I’ll show you how much the heat pump costs ... how much the furnace WOULD have cost ... and your savings when you buy your new heat pump and furnace as part of this special offer. The price I show you will include all installation materials and labor. There’s no fine print, nothing left out.
So here’s how I can make the incredible offer at the top of this letter.
Earlier I said that making you this amazing offer is also good business for me
Every year the biggie furnace manufacturers guesstimate how many furnaces to produce. Since there’s no way of knowing what the weather will be like and other factors that affect sales, these guys always have leftover inventory they have to hold onto until the next heating season.
The way I look at it, by letting YOU win big now, I’ll win at the end of the year. And I won’t have to “make up” for the lost sales during my slowest months.
I saw a great business opportunity in this and went to one of these biggie companies (they won’t allow me to use their name in this letter) and contracted for the purchase of 56 of these furnaces that were going to just be sitting around. Plus, I bought 56 heat pumps all in the 3 most popular sizes used in Lower Mainland homes. Because of the number I bought and the time of year I purchased them, I got an unbelievable deal ... rock-bottom prices. Don’t get me wrong - these are brand-new, top quality, 2011 models. Not “seconds.” Not “blems.” Not builder-grade. These are premium furnaces and heat pumps fresh from a name-brand factory with a full factory warranty. How to Get Your Name Brand Furnace for Virtually Nothing By putting together this furnace-plus-heat pump package (I call it the “Hottest AND Coolest Deal of the Century”), going through some heavy negotiations
I figure if I make you an absolutely irresistible offer .. if your furnace is pushing 8 years or more ... and if I barely mark up the price I paid, I’ll accomplish 2 major objectives that will allow me to reduce my losses the rest of the year. I’ll be able to ... • Pay my overhead (rent, utilities, insurance and taxes) during the slow period • Keep my service & installation technicians busy enough to pay them to work instead of sit at home. As you can see, when you take me up on my “Hottest AND Coolest Deal of the Century,” EVERYONE IS A WINNER! And by the way, there’s no obligation when you have me come out to measure your house and explain the installation If you decide you don’t want to take advantage of this incredible deal (although I can’t imagine why you wouldn’t want to save this kind of money), it’s no problem. You’re not obligated in any way. In fact, just for taking time to read this letter and having me out to survey your house ... I’ll give you a Very Special Free Gift Coupon ($50 value). Why? Even if we don’t do
business together now, I want you to remember us in the future. If you’re thinking a new furnace (& heat pump) isn’t in your budget - don’t worry! You don’t have to pay me right now Because I’ve tried to think of every reason possible why you WOULDN’T take me up on this spectacular offer, I’ve even made arrangements for a super bank rate financing plan. And I’m not “marking up” the interest rate like so many other companies do. While I can’t promise you this, it’s possible that with this financing plan your monthly investments in a new system could be more than paid for by the savings you see on your monthly utility bills. My Disappointment-Proof Guarantee Talking about lower utility bills, I’m so sure you’ll see at least a 25% cut in your heating and cooling bills (in reality, it may be more like 35%+), if you don’t I’ll pay you twice the difference for 2 years. Not only are you getting a new, first-quality furance virtually free, plus a first-quality heat pump at a great price, I guarantee you’ll lower your heating and cooling bills by at least 25% or I’ll pay you double your savings for 2 years. (This alone should convince you that these systems are some of the very best quality and most efficient available). But you’ve got to act fast ... call me at 946-1000 right now! This offer ends June 24th no matter what Don’t wait to call me. Here’s why. I have only 18 of each of the 3 sizes. When all of the air conditioners are sold and all the furnaces “given away” in a certain size, the “Hottest AND Coolest Deal of the Century” is over. And if I still have any of the 56 systems left on June 24th, this offer still ends. The reason is that my business only slows down for a short time. Since these furnaces cost me so little, if I’ve got any left, I’ll sell them next winter at last year’s prices and still come out ahead. So call me right now at 946-1000 Thanking you in advance, Scott Campbell Owner P.S. Remember, there’s no obligation and - even if you change your mind once I measure your house and give you the estimate - you still get that Free Gift Coupon worth $50.

Education
Delta mulls options for $230K
DELTA – The Delta school district will benefit from unexpected additional funding recently announced by the provincial government. The Ministry of Education said it will provide an extra $15 per student, for a total of $8.1 million provincewide, with the immediate release of
“holdback” funds, money retained by the ministry while districts confirm enrolments. Noting Delta will gain about $230,000, school district secretary treasurer Joe Strain said the new money hasn’t been budgeted as of yet. As to where the extra $230,000 could wind up, Strain said some of that could go back to help replenish those diminishing reserves.
Those accounts are important because some form of contingency is needed when there’s such a large operating budget, Strain said. The district, though, will probably wait to see its numbers once the current fiscal year is done. “There’s a number of options open to the board, given that our budget has already gone in,” Strain added.

Legislature
Politics just got nasty again in B.C. InTheHouse Keith Baldry
I
f the last few days of the just-wrapped legislative session indicated anything, it was this: the nasty, divisive, brawling nature of B.C. politics has returned. From the moment Premier Christy Clark took her seat in the house last week, the atmosphere in the legislature changed noticeably. Almost immediately, Clark seemed to get under the skin of New Democrats – most noticeably party leader Adrian Dix – in a manner seldom seen before. And for his part, Dix gets a rise out of B.C. Liberals that his predecessor, Carole James, never got close to attaining. The question periods of the last week were beyond raucous. As Dix and Clark squared off each day, the din became so loud it was hard to hear either of them. Both sides were seething with rage at each other, and Speaker Bill Barisoff seemed to give up trying
to maintain any sense of decorum. It hasn’t been like this for quite a long time. Oh, things were pretty bad during the waning days of the Bill Vander Zalm government, and likewise the air was poisonous after the 1996 election, when the B.C. Liberals were all bent out of shape because they had just lost an election they thought was a lock to win. The first couple of years of the Gordon Campbell government were characterized by a meanness openly displayed to the only two surviving NDP MLAs, Joy MacPhail and Jenny Kwan. But when Carole James took over as NDP leader, relations between the two sides improved significantly. James and Campbell never displayed the personal rancor that characterized so many of their predecessors (Glen Clark and Campbell seemed to almost despise each other, and there certainly was no warmth between Dave Barrett and Bill Bennett). Both James and Campbell pledged to create an air of civility and co-operation in the legislature, and it worked for the most part. Oh, the odd question period
could get pretty rough; however, things would quiet down fairly quickly. But trust me, those days are long gone. New Democrats seem to genuinely dislike Clark (in fact, Dix told me during the leadership race that he hoped Clark would win because she would particularly fire up his party’s members). And Clark cements those intense negative feelings because she openly mocks the NDP, making fun of them at every turn. The openly hostile relationship between Clark and Dix was on display not only during question period, but also during debates on the spending estimates for her office. Little real information emerged as the two spent much of the time making political speeches or attacking each other. The change from the tone during the Campbell/James
era could not be more startling. The personalities of the two people vying to be premier are remarkably different from each predecessor. Whereas Campbell disliked politics and loved the minutia of public policy, Clark loves all things about politics and doesn’t seem overly interested in the policy side of things, unless she can work a populist angle into the mix. While James was conciliatory and ready to embrace the political middle, Dix is combative and focused solely on those people who share his political views (in fact, one joke goes, Dix is more like Campbell than Clark is). The brief encounters this past week between Dix and Clark signal that the next election campaign will be marked by some pretty nasty personal attacks. Dix keeps insisting Clark is some far-right
wing demon, hell-bent on helping business at every turn (although a number of her policies, such as raising the minimum wage, hardly fit that description, but no matter). And Clark is determined to paint Dix as some kind of hard-line leftist (although she plucked one of Dix’s policies – raising corporate taxes, which until she did was supposed by some kind of evil lefty idea) who will wreck the economy. Throw in the NDP’s dark mutterings about Clark’s supposed link to the BC Rail scandal and the Liberals’ penchant

of reminding everyone that Dix once falsified a memo in the middle of a police investigation of his former boss, and the stage is set for a bitter, personal, knockdown fight come the next election. The two leaders’ personalities, styles and philosophies have ensured B.C. is moving back to a deeply polarized electorate. The politics of inclusion are gone – while the politics of divisiveness are upon us once again.

Drunk driver, not pub, is where blame should lie The Editor, Re: “Booze industry should shoulder social costs,” the Now letters, May 31. I agree with Rick Crompton and his praise for columnist Harvinder Sandhu’s suggestion that we all need to be more vocal when friends or relatives are intending to drink and drive. What I cannot understand is the need Crompton has to deflect responsibility for the choices made away from the one making the choice and onto a second party. Every time we, as a society, remove even a minute portion of the responsibility from drinking drivers we are giving them an out – a way to avoid the consequences of their action. So where does it end? We shift some of the blame onto friends and relatives, we shift some of the blame onto the establishment selling the alcohol, we shift some of the blame onto the manufacturers of the product. Why stop there? Why not make the truck driver that delivered the liquor partly responsible? How about the manufacturer of the chairs and tables that the drinker comfortably sat at while consuming the alcohol? As adults in Canada, our freedom to make choices in our lives is a right that we cherish. We are very vocal when it appears that our rights and freedoms are being threatened. But when we abuse that right and make poor – and sometimes deadly – choices, we turn into whiny children. “It’s not my fault – the drink, casino, cigarette was made available to me and I was too weak to say ‘no.’” The manufacturers of liquor are operating a business within the laws of Canada. Making
them pay for the havoc caused by drunk drivers would not change the behaviour of the drinking driver, all it would do is force them to pass the costs on to the consumer. We don’t need more money in the coffers to pay for the carnage of drinking and driving – we need to stop the carnage from happening in the first place. Place the blame firmly and 100 per cent where it belongs – on the person behind the wheel. Wendy Gage, Delta
Congrats to Surrey’s Class of 2011 The Editor, The graduates of École Panorama Ridge Secondary celebrated their commencement ceremony on Monday, May 30 at the Bell Centre for the Performing Arts. This is the first graduating class that has attended the school from grades 8-12. This is also the first year that we celebrate with both the graduates of the English program and with the first graduates of the French immersion program of the school. We have 313 students graduating this year – our largest class to date. Of the 313 students, 52 received internal awards totalling more than $38,700. Fifty-five external awards have been offered to students totalling over $253,250. Staff, parents and members of the community are proud to offer congratulations to the Class of 2011. Angie Peters, Surrey
New, six-lane bridge is best option for Surrey The Editor, There has been a great deal of concern over the past six months that there was to be a change in the government (and TransLink) view on the solution to replacing or refurbishing of the 74-year-old Pattullo Bridge. TransLink has said the only viable solution would be to replace the bridge; however, there is still some concern that it may opt for a four-lane span rather than the six-lane structure that many agree is the best solution. There is still some discussion as to how the bridge would be paid for, so the Surrey Board of Trade can wait until an overall funding position for TransLink is determined before taking a position on that. The Surrey Board of Trade, as Surrey’s business organization, endorses and supports the construction of a new, six-lane bridge to replace the old span. Anita Patil Huberman, Surrey
Taking two lanes from 104th Ave. is ludicrous The Editor, Re: “10 rapid transit plans put on table for Surrey,” the Now, May 31. Regarding the future proposed transit line to run along 104th Avenue in Surrey, I could hardly believe what I was reading.
Jeffrey Busby, TransLink’s manager of infrastructure planning, said that two of the four vehicle lanes along 104th will be removed to make way for two lanes of tracks, leaving only one lane of traffic in each direction. I am quite sure that Busby knows nothing about the traffic on 104th Avenue. I live on 103A Avenue and see the traffic every hour of every day, and it is always solid bumper to bumper, even with the four lanes. In fact, I have been wondering when it will be widened to six lanes. There is no doubt that the suggestion to remove two traffic lanes from an already busy road is ridiculous. Knowing how long it takes for the preliminary planning to get done, it is time for TransLink to wake up and to start thinking responsibly. Removing two lanes from 104th Avenue will never happen. Derek Coughtrey, Surrey
Half NDP program better than nothing The Editor, Re: “Clark scores well on my Top 10 list,” the Now, May 31. Columnist Keith Baldry gives Christie Clark a passing grade for partially implementing a number of proposals from the NDP. I suppose half an NDP program is better than none at all. Bill Piket, White Rock

SURREY – A crossborder trade symposium here Friday (June 10) features guest speakers David Jacobson, the U.S. ambassador to Canada, and B.C. Premier Christy Clark. A roster of trade experts from Canada and the U.S. will also attend the Building Bridges to Prosperity event, billed as the first of its kind. The focus of the day-long symposium, at the Sheraton hotel in Guildford, is to simplify trade between Canadian and American companies. Daily trade between the two nations is an estimated $1 billion. “Facilitating cooperation between businesses is crucial in maintaining this trade relationship,” said Greg Timm, chief operating officer of Pacific Customs Brokers, event host. Clark is due to deliver the breakfast keynote address, while Jacobson will be heard during the luncheon. For event details, visit www.pcb.ca/buildingbridges.cfm. The Now

SURREY – Jittery patients getting tests done at Surrey Memorial Hospital will have soothing images to look at while lying on a stretcher instead of staring at a boring, white ceiling. Art students at Fleetwood Park Secondary school have created eight ceiling panels for the hospital’s imaging department. The entire Grade 11 and 12 painting and drawing class worked on the project together and the result is a collage of abstract and realistic images of people, nature and words aimed at distracting anxious patients with their calming quality. Art teacher Carolynn Elliot said the project

taught students that collaboration reaps rewards. “Every student’s mark is on these tiles, so it’s a wonderful legacy for the class and a testament to the contribution they can make by working together,” Elliot said. Under Elliot’s guidance, each student created a small-scale design based on themes of community, culture and heritage, inspiration and technology. Of those, eight pieces were selected for enlargement into full-scale works. SMH provided the ceiling tiles. Karen Domingo, a Grade 12 student, opted for a celebratory design exploring the connection between rock and classical music. An accomplished violinist, she frequently likes to foray into rock ‘n’ roll with her instrument. “I decided to go for something upbeat so
that patients would feel happy while they were waiting,” she said. This is the second year that Fleetwood Park art students have created artistic ceiling panels for SMH. The response from patients and medical staff to the first installment was so wonderfully positive that the students were asked to add to their original contribution. The student art project was the idea of Fleetwood Park parent Karen Donaghy, a registered nurse in the imaging department at SMH and a colleague, Carolynn Murdoch, a radiology technologist. Donaghy said the art provides a pleasant distraction for patients waiting for their procedure.

DELTA – The community’s three Rotary clubs got together recently to recognize a number of deserving local teens at the third annual Delta Rotary Youth Awards banquet at the Delta Town & Country Inn. In the Compassion and Empathy category, Isabella Harned, a recent graduate of Burnsview Secondary, was recognized for demonstrating a wide range of caring acts. Harned plans to attend Concordia University in the fall to study anthropology and social justice and plans to broaden her focus on global issues. She was described as a young woman with clarity of purpose, an open heart and willing hands in the service of her fellow human beings. The Inner Strength category winner was Darren Lockard, a 16-year-old Ladner student attending the Changes Alternate Program attached to Burnsview Secondary in North Delta, who was honoured for achieving victory over adversity. Lockard had shown great resilience and determination when his mother, his sole caregiver, died of cancer two years ago. Although seeming to have lost everything and despite many challenges, he never quit on himself. In the Helping Hand category, Ashley Burwash, a 16-year-old student at Seaquam Secondary, was honoured. On March 30 Burwash was at the playing field and saw a man on the ground not breathing. Calling 911 and attending to the man until paramedics arrived, Burwash demonstrated a willingness to remain calm and help others in extreme circumstances.
The Global category recognizes a project or activity that benefits the international community. Amanda Dow, a student from Delta Secondary, showed her empathy and compassion when she, along with the Alliance Church team, began fundraising to support the Dalit people of India. She helped raise $36,000, donating it to the Dalit Freedom Network. The Service Above Self category is presented to the young person or persons whose story best describes the Rotary motto of “Service Above Self.” The winners of this award were Jayleen Conybeer, Tyrus Drozda, Sean Glancy, Jeanette Ostrom, Navin Parmar and Cortnni Welch, all students from Cougar Canyon Elementary. They were recognized for the support, compassion and empathy they show toward special needs students in their school. The Rotary clubs also honoured those who had won awards in previous years and recognized a young person who had made a special effort to uphold the honour of their award by performing Service Above Self. The first Alumni Recognition was presented to Sarita Ponce from the class of 2009. Ponce, a student at Delview Secondary, had overcome serious health challenges and turned her difficulties into support for others. Since winning her award for Inner Strength, Ponce has gone on to be a key member of the Me to We Club at Delview and raised funds for disaster victims in Haiti and Pakistan as well as local organizations such as the Midnight Ministries Food Kitchen. WHITE ROCK – Moby Dick Seafood Restaurant held its 12th annual fundraiser, which this year netted more than $1,600 for White Rock’s hospital. Since the restaurant opened in March 1975, a fundraiser is held each March where 50 cents is donated from every guest cheque. This year’s total of $1,615 bumps the total overall donation to more than $17,000. The money was presented to Peace Arch Hospital and Community Health Foundation. “Moby Dick’s is a wonderful White Rock institution,” said Jackie Smith, executive director of the foundation. “We are proud that the foundation has been the beneficiary of this tasty tradition.” The proceeds from Moby Dick’s fundraiser will benefit the foundation’s Partners in Caring Campaign to advance five priority projects. DELTA – Delta will have two representatives in Greece later this month for the Special Olympics World Summer Games. Stacey Kohler, 28, who lives in White Rock but is still involved with Delta Special Olympics, is a runner who will be competing in the 1,500 metres, 3,000 metres and the 4x400 relay. Last year, Kohler won gold medals in the 800 metres, 1,500 metres and 3,000 metres – and posted three personal best times – at the national games in London, Ontario. She’s leaving on June 17 and, after a stop in Toronto for a banquet for the Canadian team, Kohler will be on her way to Athens. The competition, which runs June 25 to July 4, is expecting to draw 7,000 athletes from around the world. Delta will also be represented by another runner, but this one won’t be competing for any medals. Delta police Staff Sgt. Debbie McLeod was chosen to represent B.C. in the international Law Enforcement Torch Run. McLeod has been involved with the local run for more than a decade. Each year, law enforcement personnel from around the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley take part in the four-day event. The run covers just less than 100 kilometres over four days and raises money and awareness for Special Olympics B.C. This year McLeod will have to miss the local run. She left for Greece on Monday to join about 90 other law enforcement officials from around the world for the international event.

Reid, Neal exit with double golds Michael Booth
Now staff twitter@surreynowsports
Two Surrey athletes turned in memorable final appearances at the B.C. High School Track and Field Championships in Burnaby last weekend. Fleetwood Park’s Keffri Neal and Earl Marriott’s Katie Reid ended their high school careers in style with two gold medals each against the best competition the province could muster. Neal tied a provincial record in the men’s 1,500-metres and added a second gold in the 800m en route to being named the meet’s most inspirational athlete award. Reid kept pace by winning the women’s 400m crown for the third consecutive year and then adding the 200m title for good measure. “It’s pretty amazing,” Neal said. “When I was in Grade 8 and Grade 9, I never saw this happening. I didn’t even make the provincials in those years and now this. It’s pretty incredible and I’m really happy with what I’ve done today.” Neal, who will attend the University of Kentucky next year, ran a masterful race to take the 1,500m title. Instead of sitting back and waiting to make a late charge, Neal broke away early and forced the rest of the field to try and keep pace. The pace Neal set was ridiculously quick, and would-be contenders quickly fell away leaving a small group within striking distance of the Fleetwood Park runner. With 600m to go, Neal picked up the pace one more time and cruised to the finish in a recordtying time of three minutes, 50.16 seconds — more than 10 seconds faster than his personal best for the event. Silver medalist Jack Williams of Semiahmoo also shaved seven seconds off his best time for the 1,500m. “I’m really happy with that time,” Neal said. “It’s unfortunate that I didn’t beat the record because for the last two or three strides I
was kind of coasting. Tying it is just as good though; it’s pretty awesome.” Two hours later, Neal was back at it again when he outlasted future Kentucky teammate Sean Keane of White Rock Christian for gold in the 800m race. This time Neal took a more conventional approach, waiting patiently as Sutherland’s Matthew Swanson made an early charge that weeded out the contenders from the pretenders. “I didn’t see that happening at all; it kind of came out of nowhere,” Neal said. “It definitely helped to push the pace because when he passed me I got kind of worried. I tried to kick but Sean met me the same way and I couldn’t get past him. So I decided to wait even though I wasn’t sure I would have enough time to pass him at the end, but I had just enough energy to do it.” Meanwhile in women’s competition, Reid made the most of her first — and only — high school meet of the season. Heavily favoured to win a third 400m title, Reid did not disappoint with a clocking of 54.60 seconds see THREE-PEAT › page 24

Phil Reimer’s
Golf report
High school track and field
Three-peat for Reid in 400m
Several Canadians impressed this week, three in particular for vastly different reasons. The best golfer in Canada turned professional in 2004, spent most of his adult life selling insurance, and has earned the title of current best golfer in Canada with no reservations. He is over 50; in fact, he is a grandfather and plays on the Champions Tour, where last year he was a winner and almost pulled it off again this past weekend. Rod Spittle of Ontario is sitting in 11th place on the Champions Tour money list after he tied for second in the Principal Charity Tournament on the Champions Tour. All those years selling insurance prior to 2004 weren’t wasted as he continued to hone is game in major amateur events. The insurance gig made sure he had the money in the bank to go out on the road and try in make into a tournament each week by qualifying on Monday, as he did in 2010. It was after one of those Monday qualifiers last year that he won. He is a Canadian through and through. Who else would use a Canadian dime as his marker? Jon Mills, also from Ontario, who had his PGA card at one time, is trying to get it back and if he keeps playing like he did on the Nationwide Tour on the weekend, that might not be far off. Mills finished tied for a distant second, with a brilliant 6 under in the final round. All of that didn’t matter because the winner, Steve Wheatcroft, won by a whopping 12 strokes. But that second spot moved Mills from 66th to 16 on the money list, and hopefully he will move forward from that spot. Graham de Laet, born and raised in Weyburn, Saskatchewan, finished 35th on the Nationwide Tour on the weekend. Nothing to rave about, you say. But De Laet has been out since January after undergoing back surgery which, depending on the nature of the operation, can be career ending. Although he is fully qualified to play on the PGA Tour, he decided to work his way back on the Nationwide Tour before moving up. Good on him: making the cut, finishing in the middle of the pack — all good. One more Canadian connection did well on the weekend. A.J. Eathorne learned her golf in the Okanagan, and not too many years ago was being hailed as Canada’s brightest young golf star. Sadly, she never did cut it on the LPGA Tour, after a string of injuries. Loving the game she turned to caddying and helped Kris Blanks on the PGA Tour win over $1 million last year. However this year he struggled so who do you blame? The caddy. A.J. got the heave-ho but within hours she was on the bag of LPGA pro Brittany Lincicome. What did they do their first time out? Win. Take that, Kris Blanks. (Who, by the way, continues to struggle, missing the cut this weekend and finishing near the bottom of the leaderboard.) On the Canadian Tour the Mexicans (at least one) seem to have our number. Jose de Jesus Rodriguez won for the second time in a row at the Victoria Times Colonist tournament in Victoria. Closest Canadian was Dustin Risdon in third place. Have a great week, Phil You can reach me at preimer@canwest.com

— more than a full second faster than runner-up Amabel Stokes of York House. “It’s a great day and I went out fast running my hardest hoping for the record, but that’s OK,” said Reid, who is off to UCLA in the fall. “Things happen and I’m just happy to have won it all three years. Winning it as a 10th grader was amazing and I never imagined winning it all three years.” Reid then completed a personal mission by taking gold in the 200m as well. She placed third in the event as a Grade 10 and second as Grade 11 before completing her medal collection in her final year of eligibility. “Every year I was always hoping to win this race so it’s great that it finally happened in my Grade 12 year,” she said. “This is always a great meet and this is my final year here so it’s a great way to finish.” Neal and Reid were not the only double gold medalists from Surrey. Asianna Covington, a Surrey resident who attends Grade 10 at Little Flower Academy, brought home the gold for both the women’s discus and shot put events. Covington’s winning throw in the discus was 41.61 metres — almost five metres farther than Brett Hastings of Reynolds. The shot put was much closer but Covington’s toss of 11.67m beat runner-up Serena Graf of Seaquam by 45 centimetres. “It’s pretty cool to win a gold medal,” Covington said. “I expect a lot from myself but to win it feels pretty good.
My personal best is 46 metres so I wasn’t close to that. I got the gold though so I’m happy.” Graf’s silver medal complements the gold medal she won for the women’s javelin. Graf’s first attempt landed 40.58 metres away, enough to give her the gold medal for the second straight year. Silver medalist Taryn Gmitroski of Lambrick Park was well back at 37.47m. “It was a great feeling and it didn’t really sink in until I was at the podium,” Graf said. “It was really satisfying to win it two years in a row and now I’m going to go for it again next year and hopefully make it three in a row.” Neal won the most inspirational athlete award, but the officials could easily have awarded the silverware to Semiahmoo’s Williams. Two years ago the son of Canadian Olympians Paul and Lynn Williams sustained serious injuries when a car struck him in front
of his school. Last weekend he was back on the track where he placed second in the 1,500m and struck gold in the 3,000m. “It’s been a big journey for me obviously and to win one gold and take second in another in the B.C. final against a group of national level athletes is really an honour for me,” he said. “What else can I say — my hard work has paid off. There’s nothing like leading on the last lap and kicking home and winning. It’s an awesome feeling and I really wouldn’t trade anything for it. It was awesome.” Lord Tweedsmuir’s Sam Kennedy wrapped up Surrey’s list of gold medalists when she led a delegation of local athletes on the podium for the women’s hammer throw. Kennedy won the event with a heave of 51.91m while Covington took silver and Elgin Park’s Christina Juert earned bronze.

Mariners fourth in B.C. Michael Booth Now staff twitter@surreynowsports
The Earl Marriott Mariners proved they were better than advertised at the B.C. Senior Boys’ AAA Rugby Championships in Abbotsford last week. Seeded fifth heading into the tourney, the Mariners advanced to the semifinal round before winding up fourth overall against the top high school rugby programs in the province. “We’re really happy with the way things went and excited with the way guys battled hard in some tough games,” said Mariners coach Adam Roberts. “It’s interesting to see how the kids respond to the pressure of playing a semifinal game against a team like Shawnigan Lake. It’s something they’ll never forget. “We have 12 guys won are in Grade 12 who have played since Grade 8 and it’s full credit to them and the work they have put in over five years.” The Mariners opened the tourney with a solid 31-16 win over host South Kamloops on May 28. Earl Marriott returned to action June 1 where they stunned the favoured St. George’s Saints 15-14 in quarter-final play. Earl Marriott trailed 14-12 with three minutes left when Quinton Wilms booted a penalty to give EMS the lead. On the ensuing Saints kick off, the Mariners’ Bobby Devaney lunged through a pair of St. George’s players to grab the kick and give Earl Marriott possession. The Mariners then played keep
Tseng Shu-O (AO) #10 - Midfield/Forward
away for the next couple of minutes before kicking the ball deep out of bounds to end the match. “It was a battle, it was sweet,” Roberts said. “It seemed like it took forever for the clock to wind down. We’ve been practising a shutdown style for when we are in tight games like that — basically just icing the puck on a rugby field to kill off time. When the final whistle went the boys were just ecstatic and I was over the moon.” Ian McMaster and Liam Beaulieu scored one try each for the Mariners while Wilms booted one convert plus the winning penalty. The Mariners had their hands full in the semifinal against the powerhouse Shawnigan Lake Stags. The Island private school cruised to a 47-6 win en route to winning the provincial title but Earl Marriott can take solace in the knowledge the Stags narrowest margin of victory in the tourney came against the Mariners. Earl Marriott then closed out the tournament with a hard-fought 22-19 loss to Carson Graham in the bronze medal game. McMaster, Mohammed Elchemini and Connor Bouchard all scored tries for Earl Marriott while Wilms connected on a pair of converts. Earl Marriott’s Mike Bouchard was named to the Commissioner’s XV all-star team. Fleetwood Park finished the tournament in 15th place after beating Vancouver College 43-15 in their final game. Steve Cheema was the Dragons’ representative on the Commissioner’s XV.

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle! June 7
