Social media accelerated violence of mob mentality, SFU prof says Tom Zytaruk

SURREY – A social media expert suspects those little devices everybody’s carrying these days to instantly upload images and other info to the web may have brought out more violence from some rioters seeking “trophy” shots. Dr. Stuart Poyntz, an expert in communications and young people’s media culture at Simon Fraser University, says the presence of cameras tends to create a peculiar stage. “Maybe it brings out more violence,” he said. “I think cameras accelerate the intensity, and in this case, the violence that was on display.” “Cameras have changed the way we perform to each other,” Poyntz said.

“Social media is such an extension of ourselves these days, especially for young people, that wreaking havoc and then tweeting about it immediately are part of one and the same performance. “In fact, to not tweet about the destruction or to not upload the images and comments to facebook for many of the rioters would be to not really finish the job. It would be like See also SURREY › page 3 See also VIEWPOINT › page 10 See also LETTERS › page 11

eating without swallowing.” Poyntz noted that commentators have referred to the rioters as “yahoos” and the like, as if they are inherently disposed to reckless acts of stupidity. Fact is, though, many would have been middle-class kids, from Vancouver and the suburbs, who were harbouring unrealistic expectations. Pulled in by the spectacle of game 7, some people in the crowd got worked into a froth anticipating a climax that just couldn’t be delivered. “Win or lose, it’s not there,” Poyntz pointed out.

Mob mentality can be an incredibly powerful force. “I don’t think it was driven by a coherent political narrative,” Poyntz said of the violence downtown. He recalled a clip of one guy confronting four cops in riot gear. The fellow’s friends tried to pull him back from a clearly no-win situation for him, but he wouldn’t have it. “It was like a magnet pulling him in.” Fellow SFU communications professor Dr. Peter Chow-White followed the activity in downtown Vancouver via social media as hundreds of people described their location and experiences through texting and uploading info. “People used social media as an alternative form of media for information to warn friends and family away from hot areas and to get out of the downtown core, to comment on the events, to express their disgust and embarrassment, and to document the violence,” Chow-White observed. “One of the trending hashtags, which indicates a real time, public conversation, was #embarrassed.” That comes as no surprise. tzytaruk@thenownewspaper.com

s citizens of a modern urban society, we see ourselves as being several points removed from our ancestors who cooked over open fires and foraged for berries and other sources of food. A few thousand years ago, it was called survival. Today we call it camping. Much has changed for humans over the millennia. Today we live with all the modern conveniences with few threats to our well-being. And yet, all it takes is a loss in a hockey game to remind us that we are not nearly as sophisticated as we might think. After Hurricane Katrina, it took only three days for society in New Orleans to completely unravel. In Vancouver, it took less

than one hour after the home team’s loss. While the vast majority of us dwell together in reasonable harmony, there are some among us straining against society’s accepted code of behaviour. To put it another way, in the great leap between man and ape, some of us didn’t jump far enough. Way back in time, when humans lived in caves, life was short and filled with inconvenience. Food was bland, there was no heating for the cave aside from open fires and the posturepedic mattress was still several thousand years in the future. To make matters worse, humans weren’t the only ones who wanted to live in those caves. Bears also tend to set up shop in such prime locations, leading to inevitable conflict at the top of the food chain. see RIOTERS’ › page 4

Safer bank notes unveiled in Surrey Jen Saltman

SURREY – With features such as transparent and frosted windows, hidden numbers and holograms, the Bank of Canada hopes new polymer $100 and $50 bank notes unveiled Monday will deter counterfeiters. The bills look and feel completely different than the current cotton-paper bank notes and, according to Bank of Canada spokesman Trevor Frers, “are very easy to use and very difficult to counterfeit.” “These new notes set a benchmark worldwide and will help maintain the

confidence Canadians already have in their currency,” Frers said at a news conference in Surrey, describing the bills as durable, innovative and secure. Security features, public education, retailer awareness and law-enforcement efforts have resulted in a significant decrease in the number of counterfeit bank notes over the past decade, Federal Integrated Counterfeit Enforcement Team co-ordinator Sgt. Tony Farahbakhchian said. The $100 will be available in November, while the $50 will be issued in March 2012. New $20, $10 and $5 bills will be unveiled and issued by the end of 2013.

SURREY – So far 117 people have been arrested in connection with the Vancouver Stanley Cup riot but police haven’t yet revealed how many are from Surrey. “I don’t have that information,” said Const. Lindsey Houghton, a spokesman for the Vancouver Police. “We can’t identify people or where they’re from until formal charges have been laid.” The 117 arrests covered a variety of offences, including breach of the peace, public intoxication, breach of probation, assault, mischief, theft, possession of stolen property and obstructing police. By Monday formal charges had been laid against eight men. Six of them have no criminal record. Two are from Burnaby, one is from Calgary, two are from Maple Ridge, two are from Delta and one is a 19-year-old man from Surrey. The Surrey resident is accused of breaking into the Hudson’s Bay store and stealing a purse. His name hasn’t been released. The Vancouver Police-led Integrated Riot Investigation Team continues to pore over more than 3,500 emails the public has so far sent them in an effort to help nab the rioters. Of these tips, 53 came with videos, 676 with links to YouTube, 708 with images, and 1,011 with hyperlinks to other social media sites. Concerned vigilantes might use social media to deliver some freelance justice, police are asking people to resist that urge and let calmer heads prevail. Meanwhile, local police were ready for trouble in Surrey and North Delta after the Canucks lost, but it didn’t happen. While drunks flipped cars, burned them and smashed windows in Vancouver, all was pretty quiet in these parts. In fact, only one man was arrested for public drunkenness as huge crowds of hockey fans returned to Surrey’s four SkyTrain stations from Vancouver in the hours after the game. Surrey sent 100 Mounties and Delta police sent 25 officers to help quell the rioting in Vancouver as hooligans reprised the 1994 Stanley Cup riot when the Canucks lost the cup to the New York Rangers.

“Our experience with the Stanley Cup was a very positive one with well-behaved crowds, very family oriented,” said Asst. Commissioner Fraser MacRae, officer in charge of the Surrey RCMP, said concerning events in Surrey. According to MacRae, Surrey RCMP spent about $30,000 on winning nights, when big crowds congregated at Scott Road and 72nd, and about $7,000 per night policing the Surrey Central location during the finals. The intersection of Scott Road and 72nd Avenue, a popular destination for cheering hockey fans, was also quiet after Game 7.

Our experience with the Stanley Cup was a very positive one with well-behaved crowds, very family oriented. Delta Police Acting Sgt. Cal Traversy said Delta Police spent roughly $40,000 for its part in policing that intersection, which borders Surrey and North Delta, during the series against Chicago, Nashville and San Jose, and $140,000 for the final playoffs against Boston. Delta Police Chief Jim Cessford said police from around the Lower Mainland started meeting to plan for the expected crowds before the playoffs even began. He said Delta had a plan to deal with local crowds but there was also a larger one to handle the throngs in Vancouver. When things started getting out of hand, that plan was put into action. “I’m proud of what our police officers did,” Cessford said. Disappointment aside, residents of Surrey and Delta have since shown appreciation for local cops, particularly in the wake of the riot. On Friday, Grade 11 Physical Education students from Sullivan Heights secondary in Surrey dropped in to the Surrey RCMP station with a giant card, to thank Surrey’s Mounties for the role they played in both helping to stop Vancouver’s riot as well as keeping their own city safe during and after the playoffs.

NEWS Stanley Cup riot

Rioters’ punishment will speak volumes

‹ from page 1

A woman signs the memory wall during the aftermath of the Stanley Cup riot in Vancouver. (Photo: IAN SMITH, PNG) perpetually running through their minds. Through all of this, humans have rewarded and lauded the brave acts of young males performed in the best interest of the society. The teeth and claw necklaces gave way to less graphic trophies for our bravest warriors, first with medals and titles of honour and lately, multimillion dollar contracts to acknowledge athletic triumph both real and anticipated.

Last Wednesday night, this system broke down. British Columbia’s esteemed warriors were vanquished in the arena (by Bruins no less), and a group of young men saw this as an opportunity to prove themselves. They did not have the skills to command big money for their exploits, but thousands of others cheered on their efforts anyway. They downed intoxicating liquids and then set out to defend their tribe’s honour.

After keeping a menacing video screen at bay and then battling with each other for a time, they turned their attention to more serious threats to their well-being. A single person is not capable of quelling the danger they faced but, as a group, they were much stronger. Together they could defeat the enemy and with the war cries of their supporters ringing in their ears, they rose up as one and slaughtered the dreaded Smart Car. With one enemy humbled, the brave youth proceeded to eradicate every other four-wheeled menace they came across (what can I say, it’s a human flaw we have) and took out a few portable toilets for good measure. When the offending vehicles were rendered harmless, this brave lot paraded in front of the smouldering hulks of their enemies. Whooping and screaming, they climbed atop the vanquished and let everyone watching know their bravery could not be questioned. Then, like their cave brethren

so many years ago, the self-styled heroes began collecting souvenirs that would prove their worthiness as warriors. Some posed for photos beside and atop the now defeated enemy while others, looking for more tangible badges of honour, smashed windows and helped themselves to the possessions of their foes. Bear teeth and claws gave way to perfume bottles, make up containers and assorted mannequin parts. With this epic and courageous battle now complete, it is now society’s turn to honour these brave defenders of the tribe. Do we reward them by allowing them to continue to live amongst us, thus condoning their actions? Or do we yank hard on the reins and put these young stallions in check? How we respond will speak volumes about how far we have travelled from the mouth of the cave. Michael Booth is sports editor and feature writer for the Now. Reach him at mbooth@thenownewspaper.com

URBAN FORESTRY

BECOME A TREE WATERING PARTNER! Like our kids, our trees also need nurturing in their youth. In warm summer weather, trees get thirsty and need water to replenish their fluids. If there is a City street tree in front of your house, still in its youth, you can help give it a strong start in life by regularly watering it during warm weather. This summer, the City of Surrey is piloting an innovative program to water young trees with refillable watering bags. These “water smart” bags increase the amount of water available to your City trees. These bags slowly release water, reducing the amount of water lost to runoff and evaporation.

Get involved!

You can help by requesting a watering bag for the street tree in front of your house. The City will provide you with a watering bag. All you need to do is fill it up once a week. Contact us for more information: 604-501-5050 062111

With the help of opposable thumbs and primitive tools, the adult males of the cave society battled the beasts and, on the occasions when they won, the tribe dined on meat and used the skins to keep warm in the caves. The young men who triumphed over the threat to the clan were revered. They had proven their worth as warriors and they turned the teeth and claws of the vanquished carnivore into items of personal jewelry that signified their passage into adulthood. This pattern continued through the ensuing millennia. Humans moved from the caves into nomadic lifestyles followed by societies centred on agrarian activities. These in turn evolved into towns which grew into cities and the next thing we knew, humans were spending a couple of hours each day in automobiles with tepid coffee in the cup holder, a wireless device hanging from their ears and the question of where to pick up dinner

SURREY – The rapidly growing Surrey school district will be getting a “substantial” injection of cash to build new schools, Finance Minister Kevin Falcon hinted on Monday. Falcon said it was too early to offer a figure but he noted a capital funding announcement coming in the next few months should satisfy Surrey school officials. According to school board chair Laurae McNally the district’s top 10 list of capital projects – sorely needed new schools plus replacement schools and additions – add up to $121 million. Falcon’s comments came as he was attending the official opening of Adams Road Elementary school in Clayton. In an interview after the festivities, Falcon said the sum the Surrey board of education is seeking for new schools is substantial “and our response will be commensurate with the substantial request they’re making.”

McNally was muted in her response, basically saying she’ll believe it when she sees it. “We desperately need help and we need a made-in-Surrey solution – like yesterday.” Meanwhile, Education Minister George Abbott confirmed that Surrey won’t be getting $2-million in bridge funding to help the district pay for the CommunityLINK program. But he noted that the funding formula, which was devised in the mid1990s and doesn’t reflect student growth, is currently under review. Abbott agreed that Surrey isn’t getting a fair shake under the current funding formula. “The formula is not as reflective in shifts of population as it should be, so as a consequence a very fast growing school district like Surrey has tended not to get as many dollars through the program as arguably they should,” Abbott said. The ministry has allocated $3,825,564 in funding for the CommunityLINK program for 2011/12.

No jail for bilking school board up. Of that amount, $25,000 went to the school district. Most of the remaining money was used legitimately, but almost $44,000 was not. In his decision, Judge James Bahen said an 18-month conditional sentence was appropriate partly because Chadwick has no prior criminal record and is not a danger to the community, nor is he a risk to reoffend.

SURREY – A Surrey university student has been chosen as one of Canada’s Top 20 Under 20. Ivneet Bains won the award in Toronto earlier this month at a ceremony hosted by Youth In Motion, a national organization that encourages peer-to-peer mentoring and tutoring among Canada’s youth. Bains, now 20, is a second-year student at UBC’s Sauder School of Business. He came to Canada from India with his family in 2007 and quickly established himself as an exceptional scholar and social entrepreneur. He is the founder of Math4Me, a tutoring and mentoring program that helps students from Grades 3 to 12 improve their math, science and English skills. It was Math4Me that brought Bains to the attention of Youth In Motion. “I was nominated (for a Top 20 award) for Math4Me, because it has impacted so many

student’s lives,” Bains said. His life is very busy with school, commuting back and forth between UBC and Surrey and his work in Math4Me which is expanding into Vancouver, but Bains doesn’t find the pace tiring. “I try to follow my passion and I try to do what I think I should do. I think when you’re doing things that make a difference in society, even a hectic life doesn’t seem like it.” Proud father Haropinder Singh Bains came to the Now with the news of his son’s award. “Yes, I am very proud of him. That’s why I came here. It is such a prestigious award,” the elder Singh said. What lies in Ivneet’s future? He will finish the Bachelor of Commerce degree he’s working on now and perhaps go on to earn an MBA. No matter what, Bains will continue his philanthropic work, integrating Math4Me with his passion for finance and economics.

SURREY – The artist in a counterfeit cash conspiracy has been sentenced to 18 months house arrest, 50 hours of community work and one year’s probation, by a Surrey provincial court judge. Jesko Stefan Lindt, 50, was the last of a trio of Surrey-based counterfeiters to be sentenced by Judge Michael Hicks. He pleaded guilty to making and possessing Canadian and U.S. counterfeit cash in May 2009 and having the equipment to do it. His girlfriend, Sommer Homeniuk, had already been sentenced to three months house arrest and 15 months probation after pleading guilty to using the bogus cash on four occasions. The third, Richard Thomas McGaw, pled guilty to possessing the fake bills and equipment used to make them, and was sentenced to three years in jail. All three pleaded guilty after during a preliminary hearing in Surrey provincial court.

on 48th Avenue

• Fabric, Jewellery & Beauty

McGaw had been on bail in connection with other counterfeiting charges when he was arrested, during a traffic stop, with $77,400 in bogus U.S. cash in the form of 149 sheets of uncut $100 bills and 89 sheets of $50 bills. Fingerprints traced the work back to Lindt, a photographer by trade, who lived in Fleetwood with Homeniuk and used a bedroom in their residence for a counterfeiting office. The Crown sought a prison sentence of 26 to 60 months for Lindt, while the defence argued for house arrest for 18 months to two years less a day. Judge Hicks noted that Lindt has since tried to turn his life around. Lindt also has a young son with Homeniuk and three daughters from other relationships. “These offences occurred about two years ago,” Hicks said at the sentencing hearing. “In the meantime, Mr. Lindt has taken control of his life in a positive way.” Each of the offences carries a maximum sentence of 14 years imprisonment.

Stanley Cup riot

Riot puts politicians on the spot InTheHouse Keith Baldrey

T

he huge public outpouring of rage in response to the Vancouver riot may shake things up in a number of areas – not the least of which is the political arena. Two politicians in particular have been front and centre in response to the riot, and the popularity and credibility of each of them may be impacted in different ways. Premier Christy Clark was quick to correctly gauge the public mood when she warned the rioters they would be pursued and prosecuted. Sounding like a marshal from the Wild West, she sent her you-can-runbut-you-can’t-hide message in blunt, even threatening fashion. In any other situation, her aggressive insistence on laying charges and seeking jail sentences may have seemed a bit intrusive to the criminal justice system. It’s also fair to wonder whether her call on the public to help in the hunt of those responsible injected an

element of vigilantism into the situation. But given the widespread revulsion towards the antics of the rioters (or, as they are now more commonly called, “losers” or “jerks” or “morons”) I don’t think anyone is going to go after the premier on this one. However, her demand that justice be swiftly handed out also served as a timely reminder of some of the problems that exist in the justice system, and how many of them can be laid at the feet of her government. Just days before the riot, several serious criminal trials were delayed because judges say there aren’t enough sheriffs to guarantee safety in the courtrooms. The attorney general’s ministry has failed to fund more than 30 sheriff positions, even though the people who would get those jobs already have the necessary training. This gave NDP leader Adrian Dix the perfect opening to demand restored funding for sheriffs. The contradiction between the premier demanding a whole bunch of new prosecutions at the same time her government is being accused of frustrating justice being

carried out was readily apparent. The premier has now set the bar quite high. She has demanded prosecutions for charges that most likely will turn out to be a bunch of break-and-enters and mischief counts, but if funding problems allow a murder trial to go sideways she may find that being a tough law-and-order premier demands some consistency. Throw in the fact that our jails are already overcrowded and understaffed, and the prospect of several hundred moronic rioters tying up the system even more over relatively minor charges, the end result may not be as appealing as first thought. The other politician with some potentially large amount of political capital at stake here is Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson,

who is perhaps in a more vulnerable position. While Robertson was also quick to correctly align himself with public opinion, the fact that his city’s police department is fending off criticism over how it handled the riot can blow back on the mayor. The premier has announced there will be an independent, external inquiry into the riot, and that will touch on such issues as police preparedness and response. If any evidence emerges that suggests funding pressures for the police department in any way influenced the outcome of the riot, things could get very sticky for the mayor. The police have been criticized for not having enough officers on hand the night of the riot, and for their benign response,

which included not helping small businesses (and their staff) while their stores were being ransacked and looted. I’m not sure when the external inquiry wraps up its work, but keep in mind Robertson and his Vision Vancouver council colleagues face an election in November. They had all better hope nothing negative arises from that inquiry, because if something bad does emerge, it may give the rival NonPartisan Association, which has been on life support for

several years, the kind of issue it has been searching for so desperately to allow it to get back on its feet. Look for the NPA to accuse the mayor and council of being more interested in bike lanes and backyard chickens instead of taking proper precautions before the riot. It may not be a fair criticism, but there’s a good chance it will resonate with some voters.

Surrey’s livability is going down the tubes The Editor, Re: “Why are Surrey yards disappearing so easily?” the Now letters, June 16. In response to Martin Ross’s questions concerning the de-greening of Surrey, look directly at the mayor and council, with exception of Bob Bose. You don’t have to look far to see where this city’s loyalties lie – it is with the business community, not with the “people” of this city. Surrey has increasingly allowed and encouraged the cutting, paving and overbuilding of our neighbourhoods. The city website states that “Bylaw Enforcement responds to complaints from the public,” which is a false statement. I photographed and documented the additions to a home in my neighbourhood that occured after the final inspection, without permits that rendered the house in far excess of the maximum allowable for the lot. I registered complaints, and on two occasions the response from the city was that they would do nothing – that’s right, the employees who we pay refused to do their jobs. How do they get a directive to not do what they were hired for? It saddens me to see these new neighbourhoods have nowhere but the streets for children to play. There are no trees, grass or gardens to help us with our air quality. These children are also in overcrowded schools as this city allows unchecked growth with no support from the provincial government to keep up with school requirements. Every week, it is harder and takes longer to get around this city with the huge increase in population and without the improvement of traffic control or flow. Our policing and hospitals are taxed to the limits. Oh, and speaking of tax, how many of these expanded homes are paying for the real “value” of their homes? How many pay for all the services they use? Recognizing and requiring owners and businesses to be responsible for their choices, and conform to the laws, will more than cover the costs to the city. The livability of Surrey is steadily decreasing – and may come to a crashing halt – with the support of the city itself.

If the city followed its own guidelines of enforcing the “property bylaws on safety, maintenance, beautification, liveability and sustainability to establish standards for all property owners to follow,” we might have a chance of maintaining a city we can be proud of. Jill Singel, Surrey

Finally, a newspaper that is truly inclusive

Unfortunately, we live in a society where we mustn’t adequately punish miscreants, which, at that stage of their lives, is the only way that they can be instilled with a sense of responsibility. I wait with bated breath to see what will be done with those borderline psychopaths when, or if, they are finally brought to justice. Will it be house arrest or community service – or something more appropriate to the crime? Jon Christensen, Surrey

The Editor, Re: “Look inside if you need inspiration,” the Now, June 14. Finally a newspaper is responding to the community around it and to those who inhabit it, instead of portraying the more sensational aspects of daily news. It is the community who sustains and supports its population so we need to be comprehensive and inclusive so that all might be aware of how interdependent we are and we need to be. Congrats on the Now’s new Possabilities section. Clare Martin, Surrey

Not confident justice will be done after riot The Editor, Well surprise, surprise – there was a postStanley Cup riot in the streets of Vancouver – ostensibly because the Canucks lost. The apparent sociopaths who wreaked such havoc and mayhem in the streets on that and similar occasions did so, I believe, because of a surfeit of freedom without a sense of responsibility. If parents, for whatever reasons, abrogate the task of instilling responsibility in their children, then it becomes the task of society at a later stage to instill it through legal channels.

Good people made us proud after ugly riot The Editor, I will be absolutely honest with you and my fellow readers. Upon hearing of the Canucks’ Stanley Cup loss, I was absolutely disgusted to see the ensuing riots that ravaged the city and blackened Vancouver’s reputation... but not entirely surprised. I could go on in this letter to vehemently condemn the actions of those few irresponsible, drunken troublemakers; admonish those who encouraged such vile and contemptible behaviour; slam the VPD for their apparent lack of preparedness in dealing with excessive crowds... etc, etc. But I’m not going to do that. Enough censuring has been done by local and international communities, shared by social and news media, ad infinitum and ad nauseam, to the point where the message is quite clear – Vancouver lost not only the Stanley Cup but also its dignity. Instead, I’m going to use what few and precious words I can to honour those who acted, and continue to act, against the damage done to both the city and reputation of Vancouver. I wholeheartedly commend those Vancouverites who, many at the risk of their own safety, rose against the rioters to defend the name of their fair city unjustly plagued by alcohol-fuelled violence and vandalism. I admire those who took advantage

of online social media and technology to capture photo and video proof of the perpetrators, that those responsible may be identified and rightly brought to justice. I vigorously applaud the countless volunteers and sanitation staff who gave their time and best efforts to restore normalcy to an abhorrent situation. You have all earned my respect and renewed my faith in humanity’s capacity to retain its best, even while behaving at its worst. Only in the middle of a thunderstorm can you truly appreciate that little bit of sunshine that brings out the rainbow. Jillian Yuen, Surrey

Hockey is to blame for riot’s brutal violence The Editor, Why are we all so surprised at the inevitable lawlessness in Vancouver? The hockey culture demands we glorify lawlessness in this so-called sport. Many refuse to come out of their denial over the fact that blatant legalized violence and rage portrayed by professional hockey players desensitizes a culture to brute violence. It’s not a family sport and parents should be wary of hockey club owners like the Canucks and what they instill in our kids. Let us never forget that hockey should shoulder some blame for inspiring the lawlessness and violence of the riot. If a man punches someone in the face in the street they can be arrested, jailed and have a criminal record for life. But, in front of millions of adoring Canucks fans, players assault the opposing team and vice versa and they are worshipped. Bizarre! As we continue to desensitize our kids and promote a spirit of lawlessness and violence through hockey B.C. will reap what it sows, and the riot’s spectacle will become more and more common. Cultural lessons in classroom

First Nations history and traditions explored by students in Urban Aboriginal Youth Leadership program Marisa Babic

Students Cynthia Thompson, Joseph Wilson, Carly Guraliuk, Sarah Guraliuk, Avery McAleer and Faith Wesaquate (from left to right) will travel to Haida Gwaii in August, as part of Urban Aboriginal Youth Leadership program at LA Matheson Secondary in Surrey. (Photo: KEVIN HILL)

I feel more connected to that part of my heritage. Aboriginal Youth Leadership program. “Since I joined this program I’ve actually been doing something that’s kind of right,” Dawson said an interview at the school, sitting at a table with some of his classmates. “Most of my cousins went to jail, skipped, drank and all that. I don’t want that to happen to me so I decided to come to school.” Dawson, a full-blood Tsishai-Gitxsan, says he didn’t know very much about his cultural heritage before he took the program but wanted to learn more about the crafts and spiritual rituals of his people. The program, he says, helped him to get in touch with his roots. “I feel more connected to that part of my

heritage,” said Dawson, who is creating art again. Classmate Avery McAleer, 16, says he found out about his cultural roots by chance. “My mom was driving me to school one day and we were taking about it and she told me I was one-sixteenth Blackfoot Native,” he said. Avery had a ready answer when asked to identify the most important thing he learned through the program. “Being respectful to everyone. Respect is a really large part of aboriginal society,” Avery said, summarizing a feeling that was echoed by the others in the group. “It’s very spiritual because you have to treat everything with absolute respect,” added Carly Guraliuk, 17. Carly and her 15-year-old sister Sarah, who are nearly one-half Ojibwe-Algonquin, visit their family reserve back in Ontario from time to time but didn’t know very much about their heritage because their

mother didn’t practice First Nations rituals. “This is a really awesome opportunity. It was an opportunity to learn more about my heritage,” Carly said of the program. Aside from the journey of self-discovery, Carly says the program has paved the way for more friendships with other aboriginal students. Sarah, who is currently making moccasins, says she enjoyed learning about the tradition and symbolism of giving away the crafts you create. Brown says he’s observed a difference in the students’ attitude and their grades have measurably risen along with their confidence and pride in their cultural heritage. “Their shoulders are a little broader and their heads held a little higher and they just seem more at home at school,” he said. The program culminates with a 10-day trip to Haida Gwaii by the group in August. “I feel really excited, I think it will be a great learning experience,” Avery said.

Dawson Reece was cutting class to hang out with his pals who were luring him into their circle with drink and drugs. A talented artist, he let his art slide. His guitar sat idle. When he wasn’t killing time playing video games, he was drifting aimlessly. “Last year I didn’t really care about what I did, so I skipped (school) a lot,” Dawson said. “My friends got me influenced on drugs and alcohol.” Then, last September at the beginning of a new school year, Dawson made a fresh start. The fifteen-year-old student signed up for the Urban Aboriginal Youth Leadership program, a pilot project at LA Matheson Secondary aimed at boosting academic success by developing leadership skills and instilling a greater appreciation of First Nations history, tradition, art and language. Vice-principal Michael Brown, a champion of the program, says a cornerstone of the project is to renew the students’ sense of pride and understanding of their culture. Aboriginal elders visit the inner-city school and facilitate weekly art workshops in drum making, storytelling, carving, sash weaving, cedar harvesting and other traditional pastimes. “It’s mostly experimental learning, which encapsulates the way traditional aboriginal learning would happen,” Brown noted. Dawson, who comes from a large family, was first nudged into changing his ways by an ex-con who shared the story of his wretched life one evening with other truant students and their parents at a meeting hosted by the school’s truancy committee. He told about his life as a high school dropout, which led to alienation and a life of drink and crime. Listening to his words, something clicked for Dawson. “I said, ‘that kind of looks like me’.” With encouragement from his mom, the Grade 10 student signed up for the Urban

Funds raised for four Cops for Cancer rides Law enforcement and emergency personnel across the Lower Mainland and B.C. are once again getting on their bikes to help raise money for pediatric cancer programs and research. Training and fundraising is already well underway for the annual Cops for Cancer rides. Cops for Cancer includes four separate fundraising rides - Tour de Valley, Tour de Coast, Tour de Rock (Vancouver Island) and Tour de North (northern B.C.). Participants spend months training and fundraising before embarking on an epic ride. And once again, the Delta police department has several officers taking part in the Tour de Valley ride. Tour de Valley takes riders over 800 kilometres from Tsawwassen to Boston Bar and back over nine days from Sept. 22 to 30. Delta police constables Tiffany Cooper, Catherine Fiddick, Shane McLaughlin, Dave Ogilvy and Mike Tegart, and reserve constable Carlye Towne, are all taking part in the ride. “I get involved as a way to give back and because the kids and families we meet on this experience are such unbelievable inspirations,” Cooper said. “Their courage and optimism is incredible.” Cooper is participating in the ride for the third time. She’s not the only returning rider, McLaughlin is riding for the second time and Ogilvy has taken part in the ride for several years and is one of this year’s team trainers. Towne has helped out at Cops for Cancer fundraisers in the past, but wanted to get more involved. “I am participating in this ride to honour family and friends who are fighting cancer and for those who have lost their battle. This year, the Now will get an up close and personal look at Cops for Caner Tour de Valley as reporter Jessica Kerr (who works with affiliate newspaper Delta Optimist) is taking part as a media rider. Each rider has not only committed to train for the ride, but to also raise a minimum of $5,000. On Saturday, the Delta officers held a Jail ‘n’ Bail at fundraiser at Scottsdale Mall in North Delta. Several prominent locals, including Delta councillors Bruce McDonald, Heather King and Anne Peterson, were to be held in the mall until they raise enough money to make bail. Other events include a pole sit in Tsawwassen in August and a five-kilometre run and pancake breakfast in September. For more information about Cops for Cancer Tour de Valley, visit www.copsforcancerbc.ca.

Delta Optimist

New animal shelter in the works Delta is moving forward with plans to construct a new home for its animal shelter. The municipality recently put out a request for proposals to design and construct a facility to replace the Delta Community Animal Shelter on 80th Street. A project that is expected to cost well over $1 million, a short list of no more than three companies will be selected to come up with a preliminary design. There’s been talk of finding a replacement for the municipally-run shelter for some time due to the South Fraser Perimeter Road, which is being constructed right next to the facility. Shelter staff and council agreed it would be a stressful environment for the animals to have to put up with once the highway opens, but things are already bad with construction taking place just metres away.

SURREY — He’s cute, he’s the mascot for the City of Surrey’s kids website and his name is Blazer. The city recently held a contest to name the new mascot, a baby eaglet. Check it out at www.surrey. ca/kids. The winning name was chosen by students at Mountainview Montessori Elementary school in Surrey, receiving more than 200 votes. “We want young people to feel engaged and connected to their city and the naming contest was a fun way to reach

out to children across Surrey,” Mayor Dianne Watts said on the city’s website. “Blazer is great name for the website mascot because it symbolizes the great opportunities here in Surrey,” Watts added. “I want to thank all the children who participated in the contest and I hope that they will continue to use Surrey’s kids website which is a fantastic resource for students, teachers and parents.” A total of 57 schools participated in the online naming contest and 100 names were submitted. Five names were randomly chosen and more than 500 kids under the age of 12 voted. The other names on the ballot were Hoget, Iziey, Quiky, and Searcher. As a reward, students at Mountainview Montessori were treated to a visit by the OWL Society. As part of her presentation, OWL Society educator Sue Davies brought along a red-tailed hawk named Stella, who is a permanent resident of the shelter after being injured.

North Delta para-swimmer Danielle Kisser has a busy summer of competition ahead including a national meet and the Western Canada Games. If all goes to plan, she’ll earn a spot on the team that will represent Canada at the Parapan American Games in Mexico in November. (Photo: KEVIN HILL) ago and was immediately smitten with the sport. She qualified for para-swimming nationals (one of two such meets each year, one in the U.S. and one in Canada) in her first year and has been to three such meets since. “She’s a naturally talented athlete and she does everything well, not just swimming,” said Team Sungod coach Kurt Murphy. “She’s diligent and she thinks

when she swims. She’s very coachable and applies lessons to race situations. She wants to be good and she works hard at it and that makes anybody good, whether they’re an athlete or not.” Para-swimmers are rated on ability and Danielle competes in events with other athletes rated at six on the disability scale (the higher the number, the lower the disability). While she cherishes

those chances to compete, the reality is she only gets to race other para-swimmers three or four times a year. The rest of the time she’s racing the clock for personal best times or to hit qualifying standards for large competitions. “It can be hard some days,” Danielle said. “I train and race against able-bodied swimmers, but when I went to nationals, I swim against para-swimmers. The term “disabled” can only be applied in the loosest sense with Danielle Kisser. The 14-year-old student at North Delta’s Burnsview Secondary played softball and soccer for years and last fall, she played on the school’s Grade 8 basketball team. That’s a full slate of activities for any teenager, let alone Kisser, who was born with achondroplasia (a common form of dwarfism). Those sports were fun but where Danielle really makes waves is in the pool where she is establishing herself as a promising talent in para-swimming. “In some ways swimming is nice because you don’t have to worry about other people pulling their weight and not performing like they should be,” the personable teen said. “I miss the team atmosphere because it was a lot of fun, but at the same time, I’m really competitive and if some teammates aren’t focusing, I find it extremely annoying. Swimming is hard because you have to train by yourself and it’s about you. If you make the change, then the result will be different — other people can’t do it for you.” Danielle joined the Delta Sungod Swim Club’s paraswimming program two years

you aren’t going to win many of your races (against able-bodied swimmers) but the times are what are important. It’s hard to not see the results right away but I know that if I keep getting faster, I can go to different meets for the disabled.” Swimming has an additional benefit for her. Other sports involving running can be hard on her body, particularly the knees. Joint pain is a major issue among people with achondroplasia but with swimming, Danielle’s joints don’t take the same abuse as they do with other activities. “Swimming is really good for me because it doesn’t put any pressure on my knees and my joints,” she said. “That means I can do it a lot more. I don’t usually worry too much about things like that — usually my mom brings it up more than I do. It depends on the day really. If my knees are sore then they’ll hurt but it’s not totally bad, I just have to be careful.” This summer Danielle has a busy slate of activities planned. First up is a trip to California for a Little People of America convention. These events attract little people from across North America for social activities as well as sporting competition. Danielle will take part in soccer, basketball, javelin, sprint relay and, of course, swimming at the convention. “I love it,” she said with a big grin. “I get to see all my friends

Busy summer could end in Mexico ‹ from page 26

and it’s a really fun time.” Danielle then returns to Canada where she will travel to Gatineau, Quebec in July for a national paraswimming meet. This event has special significance, as a good performance will go a long way towards earning a place on Canada’s national team for the upcoming Parapan American Games in Mexico in November. “Gatineau will be really intense because of what it means,” she said. “I am really close to making the

qualifying time with my breaststroke. I can do it in training, I just have to do it the same way at nationals. “When the races start, I’ll be really focused and trying not to get fogged out. That’s what my coach calls it when I get distracted and start swimming just to swim and not swimming with a goal. I’ve been getting better at that but before it was a problem.” In August Danielle will be on the road again, first to Victoria for training camp and then off to Kamloops for the Western Canada Games, which

includes a para-swimming component. All of the travel and competition may seem overwhelming but Danielle loves it. To her, the tedious part of the sport — the countless hours training in the dark winter months — is behind her and this summer is her time to shine. “It’s going to be exciting but it’s also going to be a lot of work. Now I’m at the point where all of my hard work is going to start to pay off. It’ll be a reward for all the time I spent in the pool in the winter.”

Last week was shaping up to be a disappointing one for me. Wednesday the flu grabbed a hold of me and wouldn’t let go. This meant no getting together with the gang to watch the seventh game of the Stanley Cup and no heading to Kamloops for the BC Lions training camp. The alternative: line up all the meds in a row, get flat out on the chesterfield and watch the U.S. Open. Now that beats any known antidote to a healthy dose of the flu. While a good portion of the Lower Mainland was at work I was watching the magic of Rory McIlroy, the 22-year-old from Northern Island all four days of the U.S. open — now that’s a treat. Family phoning to see how I was doing were greeted with, “Rory is six under, Rory is eight under,” and that’s how the week went forward. While watching, still in the background of my foggy memory, was that horrible collapse by McIlroy at The Masters when he shot a 43 on the back nine and blew a sure win. Not this time. He is a smart young man and he obviously looked inside himself and also talked to many who had faced that challenge and sought their advice —Jack Nicklaus for one. His caddy also suggested that he should see Dave Stockton, the former two-time majors champion and now a putting guru to some of the best on tour. All of that led to calm nerves and a confident swagger as he came through the final nine. I was getting a bit tired of listening to some of the comparisons to Tiger Woods. He has won one and Tiger has 14 and the comparison bothered him as well. When Padraig Harrington, a twotime major winner from Ireland, suggested to the media that McIlroy would be the one to beat Jack Nicklaus’s record of 18, his reply was “Paddy, Paddy, Paddy. As I said before this week, it’s nice to have all these complimentary things said about you, but until you actually do these things, they don’t mean anything.” This is a young great talent, and as Brandel Chamblee said on the Golf Channel, “Let’s not put that kind of pressure on him. He may in the end be the one who achieves greatness but for now we have to wait and see.” What we do know is that he has an abundance of talent. When you think about it, it’s amazing that the tiny nation of Northern Ireland has produced back-to-back winners at the U.S. Open. Grahame McDowell, last year’s winner at Pebble Beach, watched as McIlroy hoisted the trophy as he had done last year at the same time. The future of Canadian golf is also in young hands. Adam Hadwin of Abbotsford played his way into the U.S. Open and was outstanding, finishing 39th in a tough field. He shot a 68 on the final day and moved up 15 spots. That is a highquality final round golf. He will be in the Canadian Open at Shaughnessy this July when local fans will get a chance to see this young talent in action. Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle! June 21

An automobile takes such a big bite out of our disposable income so a dedicated maintenance routine, inside and out, is always recommended for longer life, safer operation, good resale value and as importantly, for good looks. Industry experts say that lubricating the nuts and bolts regularly is a wise little trick for fewer repairs—and so is scheduling an annual spray for rust protection. “Keeping moisture off the metal parts is the primary objective with rust proofing products,” says Craig Shuttleworth at Krown, a leader in this field. “All metal is programmed by nature to return to iron oxide and the presence of moisture simply accelerates this. The best rust proofing sprays, therefore, must have the ability to be easily absorbed into existing rust, push out all moisture present and not allow it back.” Avoid products, he said, that are thick and heavy. Yesterday’s oily sprays are hard on the environment and by coating the existing corrosion they trap condensation and moisture underneath. Other tips from Krown help too: — Keep your car clean and well waxed. — Wash the underside regularly throughout the winter — or after driving on salted roads. — Open the doors after washing to let excess water drain out. — Clean out your wheel wells where moisture collects in dirt and debris. — Clear out drainage locations at the bottom of doors, along the frame and floor. www.newscanada.com
