President’s Column Be part of a Project Management community: low cost, high performance. Breaking news. PMI’s Pulse of the Profession 2014 is released. You can download via http://bit.ly/1miEPn5. In this report titled, “The high cost of low performance,” it is stated that organizations lose an average of US$109 million for every US$1 billion spent on projects. That is getting close to 11%. How much is that in your company? Even if you are running a small IT project of let’s say €100.000-, you are still losing € 10.000-. Cees Pijs That is a significant amount of money. President More important is that there is a clear distinction between high-performing organizations and those that seem to struggle. For high-performing organizations, 89% of projects meet original goals and business intent. Compare that with just 36%of low-performing organizations. High-performing organizations lose 12 times less money! That is significant. Hence project management should be a topic on the agenda of C-level managers as it would be questionable to not have it there. No company wants to lose money. The research shows that high-performing organizations succeed through a strategic focus on people, processes and outcomes. It is as simple as that but still many organizations seem to struggle with this. Successful organizations have a continued focus on the outcomes of their projects and programs. The payoff for organizations maturing their benefits realization process is worth the effort: organizations being highly mature with benefits realization tracking see an average of 73% of their projects meeting original goals and business intent. The Pulse data collected over the last several years further shows that organizations can clearly benefit from maturing their Project, Program and Portfolio Management processes. There are a lot of best practices available such as those in the standards of PMI (see http://www.pmi.org/PMBOK-Guide-and-Standards.aspx ). Incorporating those into your organization’s Project Management processes is paying off. Despite this, many organizations seem to fail and are not taking sufficient action. You wonder why as there is a clear business benefit. The final docus is people. High-performing organizations have effective organizational Change Management in place. According to several studies, the Executive Sponsor - the person within the organization who champions change is vital to achieving effective organizational change. PMI’s guide: “Managing Change in Organizations: A 1 Practice Guide ” indicates the importance of Executive Sponsors on projects and programs. The latest Pulse research confirms that actively engaged sponsors are again the top driver of project success. With such a critical element to driving change, we felt that it deserved more focus. Therefore, our latest chapter event so kindly hosted by TIAS/Nimbas in Tilburg focused on Project Governance. We will continue doing so. Next time bring your project sponsor! The Pulse research finally shows that organizations need to focus on the development and training of their talent in order to achieve superior project performance and become high performers. Talent Management is ultimately important in every organization. Besides all efforts that organizations take in this area there is a simple thing they seem to forget. Participating in the Dutch PMI community and encouraging your staff to get actively involved. Our community is based on two principles: sharing knowledge and networking. For me those are two very important aspects of Talent Management. So perhaps we should research a mini Pulse to find out if being a member of the PMI Netherlands Chapter creates a competitive advantage and makes you more successful. For me the outcome of that study would be no surprise! Hopefully my message reaches all those HR managers involved in Project Management and Talent Development. Please encourage your staff to explore our community or come and see for yourself. It is worth a try. Low cost, high performance! Meanwhile enjoy reading PMI’s 2014 Pulse of the Profession. I highly recommend it!

From the desk of the Director Events Dear PMINLCH Member,

As you are accustomed to by now, we are trying to plan the nicest possible monthly events in 2014 once again. In January we started off with the great presentation of Jacques Henk-Jan Molenkamp Dunselman about what a project manager can learn from aviation lessons, followed in February by listening to the interesting insights of Director Events Prof. Ralf Muller in the (form of) Project Governance required when trust and ethics are at play. This topic was nicely followed by a presentation by Ms. Karin de Bruin about the impact of personal values on team commitment. Of course we are doing our best to keep up this high standard of presentation throughout the year. Your input is appreciated, so if you have certain wishes or you happen to know an excellent speaker, please let us know! Slowly our Events Calendar starts to take shape: First up, on March 26, is our ‘Algemene Leden Vergadering’ (General Member’s meeting) which will be amended with a world-café session in which we would like to hear your opinion and input on topics like trends in Project Management, desired learning objectives, expectations of our Chapter objectives for 2014, etc. On April 9, we will organize a Chapter Meeting around Agile Project Management for which we have an engaging real-life case of how Tele2 is doing Agile development. In May, besides the fact that you are very welcome to come to the PMI Global Congress in Dubai on May 5, we are considering a special topic around the world of Oil & Gas. Please do give us a call or drop an email to events@pmi-netherlands-chapter.org if you have an interesting case or know a compelling speaker. The remainder of the agenda 2014 will follow shortly. Hope to see you at our events!

Focus on PM Research Welcome to the Focus on PM Research column of this Newsletter. The idea is to brief you about thought-provoking results from research studies about Project Management around the world. Sometimes the news item will be brand new, sometimes not. The purpose is to give you a benchmark to compare against your own insights.

This time I would like to focus on you, the Project Manager. What kind of Project Manager are you? Which kind of project suits you best? Ralph Kliem and Harris Anderson* investigated these questions. They identified four different types based on how project managers:  process information (seeing the big picture versus attention to detail),  plan their actions (preference for concrete actions versus preference for well-developed plans),  deal with change (resist change versus embrace change),  organize their team (rely on individuals versus rely on teamwork).

Dr. Peter M. Storm Kennis&Co AMI consultancy Linkedin Everest manager blog

The four types are:  Reactive Stimulator who prefers concrete action seeks quick results,  Logical Processor who is methodical, clear and precise,  Hypothetical Analyzer who is a problem-solver and who enjoys complexity  Relational Innovator who focuses on the big picture and who likes to explore different ways of approaching the project. According to Kliem and Anderson, different project environments require different types of Project Managers. For instance, Reactive Stimulators are best suited for projects in dynamic, unstructured environments. Whereas Logical Processors are best suited for projects in stable, structured environments. So, what kind of project manager are you and which type of project environment suits you best? Let me know what your experience tells you. You can reach me through peter@kennisenco.nl Source: *Ralph Kliem and Harris Anderson, Teambuilding styles and their impact on project management results, Project Management Journal, 1996, volume 27, number 1.

Cheers and … keep believing in your personal strengths.

Expand your Network Attend the PMP Exam Coaching Class

In August I wrote a piece about how I got my PMP and about the PMP Exam Coaching Class which helped me achieves my certification. The class I participated in started in March 2013. On the last day, we all connected on LinkedIn and have been keeping in touch using LinkedIn since. We even recently had our first annual anniversary dinner! Jeffry Turfboer, PMP During the dinner we talked about many things, both Project Management related and other items. What we all agreed on is that it’s amazing that we, each an individual with a profound love for the profession but otherwise unrelated, were sitting together there as a group. The PMP Exam Coaching Class made that happen!

Keeping in touch with your classmates also helps when going to PMI events. It’s more fun to go to an event where you at least know someone. You’ll find that at almost every event someone from your class is bound to join you. For example, many of our group will meet again at the PMI Netherlands Summit on June 12th. The current PMP Exam Coaching Class started on February 22nd 2014. If you weren’t able to join, be sure to keep on the lookout for the next PMP Exam coaching Class! See: www.pmi-netherlands-chapter.org

Cheers from the Class of 2013!
