President’s Column While I was on holiday the terrible news of MH17 reached me. How horrible were the first TV shots of the disaster scenery. How impressive and respectful were the arrival of the deceased at Eindhoven airport. The Chapter thus far did not receive any messages about direct involvement of any of our members. Nevertheless with 900+ members, most likely members are engaged indirectly with many of the victims, their relatives, friends, colleagues, neighbours and others that were close. At least I am. Two people in my small village died in this Cees Pijs terrible and unbelievable disaster. Did I know them? Not really, but the President opportunity to get to know each other is brutally taken away, from them, from me, from you. Why? I don’t know and I don’t understand. What I do know is that our chapter community mourns, in silence and with deep respect for the victims and all those that were close. Our community mourns around the globe as the warm words from Becky Winston received by e-mail show. “My deepest sympathies to the Netherlands on the horrific loss of life suffered with the Malaysian Airline 17 tragic act. To think the world has loss great minds in the fight on AIDs/HIV and other life that was positive and contributing is unthinkable. The world mourns.” (Becky Winston, Past PMI Board Chair, 2002, Fellow, PMI) Healing those deep wounds will take a lot of time while it will never be the same again. The Chapter’s warmest sympathies are with you.

Events From the desk of the Events Director This time I’d like to start my update to you, PMI NL Chapter members, with another request to help us to identify whether your organization could host one of our chapter meetings. As you know these evening events have hardly any impact on the daily operation and you will get great reward from the other members that we can have one of our great sessions at your company! In other words: we struggle a bit to get free access to meeting locations with room for approx. 50 – 100 people (already if 50 persons would fit in). Your help will be much appreciated! Coming Webinars Earn PDU’s and get access to great knowledge and insights from behind your chair at home! For the month of August we scheduled a webinar for you presented by Jan van Egmond: 2014-08-19 Webinar - ‘Why projects fail and why the Project Manager can’t help it’ This webinar will make you wonder….

Furthermore I’m pleased that we have 4 formal webinars from the training program of our sponsor IIL scheduled for the coming months: What Every Project Manager Should Know About Business Analysis Improving Project Management Skills with Lean Six Sigma Best Practices in Project Scheduling Using Microsoft® Office Project Communication and Negotiation Skills for Project Managers The Chapter Goes to Africa? There are many charity organizations, NGO’s and other great initiatives to helping to create a better world. Most of these organizations are run by volunteers and the professional approach of their projects could benefit from our expertise. The senior Project Managers of the NL Chapter bring valuable experience that could improve operational excellence significantly, allowing for more actual results for the people that need help, development, aid, etc. Efficiency! More for less money! PMI NL Chapter wants to be socially engaged engage by means of activating members (volunteers) to support charity organizations to improve their operational efficiency by means of: Project Portfolio Management: doing the right projects Project Management review, coaching, advice: doing the projects right Actual hands-on project execution We are trying to organize a kick-off event, a world café workshop for September in which we will perform Project Portfolio Management techniques on the different charity objectives in The Netherlands to determine: a. Which good cause / charity organization is the most appealing to our members? b. What added value can we bring to which project? From this workshop we’d like to set-up a group of volunteers within the chapter, supported by the chapter and all of us, who can start with actual hands-on supporting the chosen organization and/or a specific project with coaching, planning, or even actual work on location wherever in the world! So keep you agenda free at the end of September to join us in this great interactive workshop in which you will learn portfolio management techniques on the fly. HELP: I would appreciate some help on setting up this world café session, so feel free to volunteer already. In addition, I have been working hard to get a charity organization to allow us to use their canteen to hold the workshop, but thus far I was not successful to secure a location and date. Do you have ties into a charity organization that might want to host our workshop / chapter meeting: please let me know!

Events PMI Netherlands Summit 3rd Edition “a success story” It started in the autumn of 2011 with an idea … This year, on June 12 we organized – in cooperation with CKC Seminars – the Third Edition of the PMI Netherlands Summit. Organizing such an event gives you quite some stressful times – do we have enough sponsors? Do we have enough participants? Can we find the high level keynotes? Is our program attractive? etc – It is also a “kick.” It is exciting – like every project – from the beginning (after the summer break) until the end (receiving the results from the survey).

Keynote speeches were excellent. Attractive program. Delighted to see not only IT participants, but also participants from the heavy industry. Interesting link between CPM and Critical Effort. Wow, my first standup meeting! Good theory and nice to see it in practice. I spoke many professionals and that was good. It gave me an energy boost and some nice contacts
Compliments are justified to our sponsors for their financial support, CKC Seminars for the organization and Cees Pijs as Chair from the Program Board (“they did it again”). Hope to see you all on June 11, 2015 at the PMI Netherlands Summit 4th Edition.

A survey on PM certification Project Management certification continues at an increasing rate around the world. Certification is a very important component of professional practice and is a vital component of professional association strategy. Ten years ago we conducted a study designed to understand the value of project management certification processes to individuals making the decision to seek certified project manager status. This information provided important insights into the value placed on certification by the individual's that choose to take this step. We are conducting a follow up survey which will provide important insight into how perceptions and attitudes towards certification have changed over the last decade. Comparing the responses over a decade apart will make a unique contribution to our understanding of the development of project management over this period. We would really appreciate it if you would participate in this study. The following link will take you directly to the survey. We anticipate that it will take between 15 and 45 minutes to complete. https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/DZ2TB9R If you are interested, you can sign up at the end of the survey to receive an executive summary of the study findings and for a draw prize for participants. We thank you for your time and hope you will choose to be a part of this exciting study. Sincerely, Tomas Blomquist, Ph.D. UMEA University

Daarnaast is hun locatie echt heel bijzonder.

The Softskills project The Softskills project is thanks to the contributions from PMI members Rene Vielvoije, Kim van Rens and Jeffry Turfboer underway to have new project management features added. We from M-engaged and Grendel Games (www.grendel-games.com) are working with the PMI members in adding PMBOK rules and PMI values to the game. The focus is on supporting junior project managers. The Softskills project has several research aspects which include the R&D on motion capture technologies, the way softskills can be added to a game character (we used the Rose of Leary for that one) and last but not least to incorporate soft skills in PM situations. Because it’s an applied game it also must be fun to play. So we already set the scene (you are running a group of technicians on a Research Institute far away in the Galaxy) and a piece of the station is melting.
Bertrand Weegenaar PM Softskills
You as a player have to get your best team member in the reaction room to fix the problem. You can have help lines (and intercom) and most likely can have help from pads or other tools. The game character Karin is created using motion capture techniques, which enables the game developers to let her act any way they like in the game. This part of the project is energetic and complex. It involves cleaning and moulding the data from the motion capture session, create a skin, add human expressions to it, design something to wear (a spacesuit of course) etc. etc.
The task for the PMI members is to add project management value to this scene. In July, Kim has visited the Grendel Gamestudio in the old prison in Leeuwarden, the Blokhuispoort. Kim and Jeffry already came up with some great ideas involving the use of PMBOK Risk Management, adding score to the dialog using the PMI values. Also using the intercom to help the player (if he asks for it will give extra points) with the situation and giving feedback. Another useful add-on will be a pad the player can use to see for example the character profile or add comments to a risk log. Kim and Jeffry are now getting involved in the process of game (non-linear) scriptwriting. Nice for their curriculum

Local news During the summer period we conclude work on scripts and substantiate the current material with game scores. After that the design will be created for the things that are worked out, the script will be finalised, a studio will be used to add extra voicing etc. So, there is enough to do and look forward too. Thanks guys. Projects can’t be done alone.
