President’s Column Dear Chapter members, Now that 2014 is definitely nearing its end I would like to take the opportunity to wish you, your friends and family and the companies you work for a smashing 2015. May many if not all your dreams come through! As your Chapter we are, as before committed to support you in your professional development. Lately you might have seem some struggles as we, the board, are volunteers and every now and then we need to set our priorities other than in favour of the Chapter. Nevertheless we are progressing towards our vision.
Cees Pijs President
For me personally it is time to say goodbye. After serving the board for six years, two as treasurer and four as your president, it is time for others to take over and give the Chapter yet another boost. I st am very glad to announce that we propose Rommert Stellingwerf as my successor per January 1 , assuming your consent at the Annual meeting that will be announced very soon. Many of you probably know Rommert as he spent many good years in the board of our Chapter. I am also very pleased that Rommert is not on his own. He will be accompanied and supported by the following board members, who will introduce themselves at the upcoming annual meeting: Rommert Stellingwerf, President André Legerman, Treasurer Jan Vermeijs, Secretary Malgorzata Krakowian, Marketing & Communication Rochelle-ann Röber, Professional Development Henk-Jan Molenkamp, Events Louis van Norel, Membership and Volunteers Michiel Dijkman, Director at large Ger van der Geld, Director at large This “dream team” will be supported by: René Vielvoije, operations CEO vacancy, to be announced soon Saying goodbye makes me sad on the one hand but happy on the other. Sad because I very much enjoyed my leadership role, the opportunity to build a huge network but there is still so much unfinished work… Happy because I am handing over to a great team, being convinced that they will conclude some of that unfinished work… And happy because it will give me more personal time and room to pick up some new opportunities. Some of those will be volunteering for the Chapter. Once infected….. So happy holidays, see you in 2015! Join supporting the Chapter board, join me in volunteering for the Chapter. Allow yourself a 2015 twinkle! Yours sincerely, Cees Pijs PMI Netherlands Chapter President

Director Marketing and " The PMI Summit 2015 focuses on Next Practices. Time for renewal in our thinking Communications about Project Management. Put the windows open and breathe the fresh air in . The signals were there already in the past years. Signals which suggested that established axioms (unproven but verily believed propositions) have to be changed. For example, the axiom that it's all about Time management, Money and Quality. Or the axiom that all projects should be managed using the same standard. Or that a majority of all projects is not successful at all. Or that a Project Manager must have about forty-three competencies. What are the new axioms? That will be expressed at the Summit. I wish you all a healthy 2015 with lots of new ideas."
We encourage you to take a look at upcoming events: chapter meetings, Summit 2015 announcement. We have also some news from PMI.org and as always PM Humor.

PMI NL Chapter Mid-Term Strategy Introducing our revised mid-term strategy. We, the board of the Project Management Institute (PMI) Netherlands Chapter, are very proud to present the Chapter’s fully revised mid-term strategy. This mid-term strategy is derived from PMI’s global “working strategic plan”. Our mid-term strategy provides clarity on what the Chapter is or better how the Chapter wants to position itself and what we want to do, to steer closer to our (strategic) dream. Our revised mid-term strategy should inspire todays and future leaders of the Chapter, but it Cees Pijs should also inspire you, our valued members of the PMI Netherlands community, as our President Chapter is based on and driven by volunteerism. That’s you! Only together we can make our mid-term strategy to work, only together we can accomplish our dreams, goals and objectives listed in this document. So hopefully this mid-term strategy inspires you to volunteer for one of the many activities mentioned. Keep an eye on the VRMS application where we will publish all volunteer opportunities. Alternatively do contact one the board members to acquire more information on volunteering for the Chapter. Is there a project management related initiative you want to start, please make sure to get in touch as well. Our revised mid-term strategy document is what we prefer to call a working document. Nothing in this document is carved in stone and the content should be reviewed on an annual basis to adopt whatever changes come across. Its open for dialogue and everybody’s input is welcomed and valued. I sincerely hope that this document boosts the PMI Netherlands Chapter to heights we, today, can only dream of. With over 900 members at the end of 2014 we created a significant local community with a strong global reach. Now it’s time to take it to the next level. Come join us, be inspired, inspire us, it’s the passion for our profession that appealing on you. Have a look at our new mid-term strategy here. Regards, Cees Pijs

From the desk of the Director Events Vision and plans for events in 2015 The world and business of events is booming. I even attended an event about events. As director Events for PMI Netherlands, I attended this event to find out whether we can learn and benefit from the latest and greatest of the world of events. And it was an interesting event. To summarize my observations and takeaway: Events are enablers of change. One can make plans and communicate a lot, but a real entertaining and involving event will really make people feel, smell and live the change and the vision of the change. My perception is that also we, project managers, should make more use of events to make our deliverables more sustainable and more welcome by the receiving organization.
Henk-Jan Molenkamp Director Events
Online and Offline events merge. Events that are prepared and announced online, will already give more insight on what to expect and what to take away. The focus is higher, the desire to learn or participate as well. Therefore more events start with some kind of collaboration online before the event, and will continue offline, at the event location, and perhaps even afterwards. More sophisticated tools make participant interaction during events easier. Already many different tools exist. Also we at PMI want to benefit from that and increase the effectiveness of our events. In particular the networking (finding colleagues, friends, new employers, etc.) will become much more efficient by means of sophisticated tooling. But also organizing event by means of asking the community for input on topics, speakers and/or location. The above together with the objectives to continue to deliver interesting & compelling events to enable a learning & personal networking environment brought us to define some actions to investigate how we can improve our events operations in 2015. For one we would like to investigate which event and networking tooling is beneficial for us to start using. In the volunteer section you can read how you can help us!

Strategic Pillars for Events in 2015 Just to share with you our thoughts on how we, PMI Netherlands, can bring the most value to our members, I’m sharing the pillars on which we will build our 2014 program of events and interaction with you: I.
Future Proof events - Engaging & Collaboration a. b. c.
Webinar technologies supporting life events Online real time voting possibilities for more interaction Pre-event & during-event involvement through network app
II. Co-creation / co-orchestration of events with larger enterprises to promote PM as a profession e.g. PMI PathPro, HSI Benchmarking involving the larger enterprises in standardizing and accepting PM as a formal profession with a standardized job profile III. Sponsor events - bringing more value to our sponsors Real sponsor messages and propositions, e.g. sponsors bringing their own value proposition as well (rather than white paper generic knowledge and experiences) IV. More member involvement to promote networking and team work for lasting relationships and business value Regional Beer-table events (try again), members to organize international live-online event, ask help from members for PathPro, tooling selection, access to company resources (meeting rooms, csr officer, hrm officer) V. CSR events to express our concern and commitment for a better and more sustainable biodiverse world I hope you will find a lot of the above basic aspects back in the events in 2015! Special event Friesland Every now and again we also have to think even more out of the box then before. What can we do to improve our member satisfaction and live up to you expectations? The suggestion this time is to have an event further away from most of your homes: Friesland. We will present you some interesting cases, and we are thinking about topics like the new ‘hole’ in the Afsluitdijk, the program to obtain the honorary title for Leeuwarden to be called the Cultural Capital of Europe 2018. In addition we will offer you a economic interesting rate to spend the night, have the best networking evening since long and continue with a program in the morning like a presentation of the program to promote Friesland or even a live show of Greg Saphiro himself, after which we might go out to do some Skutsje sailing, wadlopen or another active outside event. See also: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gi8Ki3HOf8Y If you think this is a nice idea and you’d like to attend, please let me know. We need someone to help organize this as well, so feel free to volunteer as well! Benefits: • Getting away from the busy business environment • Networking in a nicer setting than the usual 15 minutes after a presentation: e.g. nice beers in the lounge or bar of our hotel • Activity outside • Enjoying Friesland, making it a getting out/ weekend away.

Please contact development@pmi-netherlands-chapter.org for more information Online Events tooling selection consultant Director events is looking for someone who is well known in the online world, understand how tools and apps work and is able to do a tooling selection / evaluation of tooling that enables our chapter to become more interactive before, during and after events. Interactive as in networking with other member, providing input to the agenda, vote during a presentation or provide online feedback afterwards (not necessarily replacing our current evaluation). In short we’d like to start using an event/network app + online voting app If you are interested, please contact: events@pmi-netherlands-chapter.org HR involvement through PathPro In the workshop at Lucent Technologies we, collectively) were providing input on how PMI NL could bring more value to its members. One of the suggestions and desires was to improve the perception of PM as a profession. This would involve making sure that PMI supports how organizations look at Project Management and foremost that job descriptions become more standardized in order to distinguish between different project roles. PMI PathPro offers and assessment on the job role of project managers for companies. Our CEO is looking for some or a small team who can help investigate, build a presentation and perhaps promote the PMI Job profile / skills required to HR departments of the big 10 companies in the Netherlands. If you know about HR job roles and are passionate about standardizing and promoting PM as a profession, please give it a try and let’s work on this important differentiator and potential step towards our desire to have PM recognized as a profession. If you are interested, please contact: ceo@pmi-netherlands-chapter.org Initiation Regional ‘Stamtafel’ gatherings In order to promote more ‘In Real Life’ networking, we are looking for people in the regions, to start their own regional beer table / stamtafel. Not necessary an event with presentation and performances, but rather having a drink with peers in the region on a Thursday night. Softskills: the last bits and new possibilities Author: Bertrand Weegenaar With a big presentation, a great marketing video and a Research Result document the Softskills team finished the R&D demo project “Softskills for project managers”. The Game academy project is coming to an end. As part of the last two months of work the team focussed on two things: putting the project management hard skills in the game design and make a superb set of marketing material.
The presentation was held in the Theatre of the Friesland Museum. With dozens of people in the audience the presentation informed about the goals, some highlights and research result around the technical aspects of the project. The presentation was done by me together with Tim Laning, CEO of Grendel Games. The presentation can be seen here (http://www.slideshare.net/bweegenaar/softskills-presentation). Look for the game trailer and the colourful brochure with the research results http://www.grendel-games.com/index.php/products/95-softskills Thank you From my point of view I like to thank Kim van Rens for his contribution to the script and project management situations in the game. He was very helpful for the game designers. Also Rene Vielvoije was a great supporter of the project during more the 4 years. That was today, now tomorrow! The next months I like to present the project and its results to more people within PMI, both in the Netherlands during regular PMI Netherlands Chapter meetings and the PMI Netherlands Chapter Summit. We are also working on the communication with PMI in the US. We also created some publicity. With the December issue of the Dutch magazine “Management Team” a paper will be send on new developments in Human Resource Management. A large article on the Softskills project and its project partners is included. There is also real interest in the project by other companies. They include the Politie Academy (Dutch Police Academy, for the training of young police officer to approach public), KLM/Air France and a large worldwide accountancy firm which name can’t be disclosed at the moment. We hope and expect that within the next three months one will be concrete and we can lift this first result to a higher level. Of course PMI will be informed and when possible contribute. PMBOK Guide Pocket companion
The PMI - Dutch Publication Board has taken the initiative to send a present to the PMI Board based on the success of the companions to PMI’s PMBOK® Guide in five languages. This initiative is warmly supported by the PMI Netherlands Chapter Board. Please find below the full letter which has been sent to PMI headquarters.
Dear Mark, It is with great pleasure that we present to you our first ‘Box of pocket companions to PMI’s PMBOK® Guide ’, on behalf of all the volunteers who spent thousands of hours on its creation. This box is specially put together for you, as our token of appreciation for the collaboration by all PMI chapter volunteers and the whole global PMI team. Without their valued effort and support for the development of our foundational professional knowledge and growth of our global organization, these publications would never have seen the light. Therefore, please regard this as a tribute to all of them! How it all started … It all started simple, just as most things do. Making it easier for people to get better acquainted to PMI and its foundational standards has always been high on the agenda of the PMI Netherlands Chapter. Therefore, we needed a pragmatic response to the so called ‘localization issue’, as we recognized and wanted to address the needs of PM practitioners: not only PMI members, but even more importantly, people who hadn’t come across PMI yet. We wanted to break down existing language barriers which led to the initial idea, in 2009, of creating a pocket companion to PMI’s PMBOK® Guide (4th Edition). That has been the trigger of this initiative. It developed into a valuable asset for our Chapter and our members as well as for people showing an interest in the PMBOK® Guide and PMI, and we still see a growing number of users: • Project, program and portfolio managers, who need a quick reference and an easier introduction to PMI’s key standard, the PMBOK® Guide, and for whom English is not their native language; • But also the more senior management levels, who recognize the need to have a slightly better understanding about e.g. their project sponsor role in the context of PM processes for realizing projects more successfully. However, it’s unlikely that they will read the PMBOK® Guide, as that is simply too voluminous and typically written for the so called ‘die-hard project managers’. At the same time, as their PMs are frequently referring to PMI’s best practices and the value of its foundational standards, they feel the urge to find out what these standards are all about…. The pocket companion proved to fulfill the needs described above. It provides not only a quick introduction of the PMBOK® Guide content, but also, and just as importantly, of PMI as an organization and its value for the PM profession and realization of business success. It definitely supported project management professionals in the field and it proved its value for business leadership being responsible for change and strategy realization of their organizations. Also, to response to a comparable, yet even stronger, localization issue in Germany, and given the nationality of one of the co-authors, the first companion based on the 4th Edition was translated into German as well, shortly after its first appearance.
11 PMI Netherlands Chapter | Postbus 90261 | 1006 BG Amsterdam - Vakvereniging voor Project-, Programma- en Portfoliomanagers www.PMI-Netherlands-Chapter.org
With that in mind, it was really good to see that during the Leadership Institute Volunteer Planning Meeting in Philadelphia in 2012, the ‘Global vs. Local issue’ was also recognized by PMI and even discussed as one of the strategic topics of the PMI organization. And this is still the case! The localization issue definitely remains a key topic for the regions, where key decision makers like to be addressed in their local language first, for lowering the entrance barriers, which simply always exist when using a non-native language. ‘Not invented here’ then becomes an issue of ‘not understood here’. How it continued to grow … So for us it has been really heartwarming to see, that such a small PMI Netherlands Chapter initiative as writing the “Pocket companion to PMI’s PMBOK® Guide” also appeared to be highly valued by many other Chapters. They definitely recognized the localization and language issue as well and therefore also felt the urge to do something about that. Based on the companion’s update based on the PMBOK® Guide 5th Edition, published in February 2013, we were contacted by several chapter representatives, who wanted to build on what we already had. This sharing of thoughts, ideas but most of all a joint drive to make a change, finally led to something much bigger than we ever could expect: • The initiative was quickly adopted by some Spanish speaking chapters. A highly motivated team of volunteers from the Spanish chapters, PMI-Barcelona, PMI-Madrid, PMI-Valencia, and from Argentina, the PMI-Buenos Aires Chapter, worked together supported by the PMI Netherlands Chapter. Cooperating with such a really global team was truly representing the spirit and goal of PMI: add value to practitioners and organizations worldwide. Based on everyone’s joint efforts, the Spanish translation of the PMBOK® Guide Pocket Companion was printed in May 2014: ‘El Compañero de Bolsillo de la Guía del PMBOK®’. • At the same time a Dutch translation was created by a group of volunteers of the PMI Netherlands Chapter and the PMI Belgium Chapter, leading to the first print, also in May 2014: ‘PMI’s PMBOK® Guide in een notendop’. th th • In the meantime, a 5 Edition update of the already existing 4 Edition based German translation was finally published, after the heavily delayed official German translation project of the full PMBOK® Guide translation, in July 2014: ‘Eine Zusammenfassung des PMBOK® Guide – Kurz und bündig’. • Working in parallel with all the other translations, ‘Le Groupe PMI Francophonie’, representing all global French language oriented chapters, also set up a group of volunteers from the PMI-France chapter, represented by different branches, the PMI Belgium-Chapter, the PMI-Morocco Chapter, the PMI-Brunswick Chapter and the PMI-Quebec Chapter. Also their shared effort appeared not to be in vain; in September 2014 their version of the companion was printed: ‘Un Compagnon de poche du Guide PMBOK® du PMI’. All in all, a tremendous effort by a huge number of PMI Chapter volunteers, who definitely earn our respect; respect for their continued support and hours of hard work, respect for their drive to get it finished and most of all respect for their enthusiasm and warm contacts when cooperating. What the future may bring … Supporting one global language in project management ensures improved mutual understanding to reinforce mutual respect. In short: it is all again about communication and collaboration. These foundational components have significant implications for our globalizing society and enhance our everyday lives; whatever language we speak or country we live in. We therefore sincerely hope that, for representing our global organization, this small box of books will become part of your standard travel kit when visiting different countries, where they speak different languages. We are sure that all contributing chapters feel honored to share their experiences with other chapters and interested parties. So please don’t hesitate to forward our contact details to them; we will be happy to provide our support to their localization initiatives (and of course we would definitely be excited to add e.g. the Chinese pocket companion to this box ).

Finally, as PMI Netherlands Chapter, we hope on a continuous collaboration for our enduring contribution to the global and local development of our profession and organization. To that end, ensuring the availability of a quick reference and an easy introduction to PMI and PMI’s key standards, as well as all project management professionals speaking the ‘same language’ remain our key targets. And with that in mind, we wish you and your team:
Great collaborations while realizing your wish list of 2015, with passion and lots of fun! Survey Sustainable Society Towards a sustainable society: what is your role as project professional? The world we live in is constantly changing. Developed countries, including the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, USA and Sweden, invest some 15 to 20% of their GDP in projects. That is quite a substantial amount of money, approximately EUR 8.600, = per person! Therefore it is no surprise that sustainability is achieving growing attention in recent years, knowing that the CO2-footprint of every Dutch citizen is 400% of the entitled amount. And let us keep in mind that to keep our clothing affordable in the Netherlands we accept child labor in South-East Asia. Even at Government level and in Businesses sustainability is an increasingly "trending topic". Every day you see newspapers, TV and social media discuss “plof-chickens, wind turbines, coal fired power plants, and a more sustainable way of life. Project professionals facilitate change Most of the investments in new or improved products and services are realized as projects. So project professionals play But what is your role as a project professional in this field? Do you already experience sustainability on your projects! And what are your own ambitions concerning sustainability? How sustainable are our current projects in the Netherlands? That is what we want to identify with this survey. Migrating the PMI NL Chapter website We are currently in the process of moving our website to Proteon. Proteon is a company providing hosting services for PMI Chapters. Benefits of this solution is that a Chapter can make use of a Single Sign On allowing members to use their PMI userid/password to sign on to PMI via the Chapter website and in the same time gaining access to a membership area of their Chapter. Probably we finalize the website migration early next year. This implies that during a couple of days no updates will be made to our website and registration for events will be closed. As soon as this period is known we will inform you by e-mail. After the migration we will inform you on the new possibilities that our website will get in the near future.
