Upcoming events
Thursday 27th August - PMI Chapter meeting at Ericsson, Rijen NB We are delighted to invite you to our Chapter Meeting for August about Smart Cities and what Smart Society means to the Project Manager. This meeting will be held at and sponsored by Ericsson. A cluster of technological advances are changing how people live, work and play. Physical and virtual areas of our lives are increasingly becoming intertwined. More and more of our interactions are mediated by machines. The Internet of Things, M2M (machine to machine) hyper-connectivity, wearable technology, intelligent living and ubiquitous computing are all increasingly important areas. The common underlying agenda is to develop new forms of connectivity, new types of digital relationships, and anchor opportunities presented by the greater integration of connected technologies into everyday lives. Hurdles for developing the smart society are, amongst others, sustainability education, environmental concerns, growing focus on corporate social responsibility, increasing regulatory requirements and impact on operational costs. These topics entail much more complexity than normal IT or construction projects. So how does the project manager manage the diversity of aspects in these kind of implementations? How can s/he make use of the smart capabilities becoming available? 17:00 18:00 18:05 18:15

Registration, sandwiches and refreshments Opening, welcome and introduction by the PMI Netherlands Chapter Welcome word by our facility sponsor – Crown Business Center Introduction of our host Ericsson and its smart society programs Marcel Damen, Director Global Operations Media & Applications at Ericsson Our host for the evening, will inform us about the developments at Ericsson to prepare project management for these type of projects and share some experiences gained at various projects e.g. the in-car infotainment project with Volvo. Smart Cleaning Project Laurens de Nooyer, Business Development Manager at Ericsson. Using existing data from buildings, and combining this data and enriching it with additional inbuilt sensor information, such as weather, traffic jam data, travel data or counting people in the office allows for the creation of new services for the building owner and the users of the building. The building owner will have more capabilities to control his building and manage cost. One example which will be presented is the Smart Cleaning Project. Coffee Break What difference does a Smart Society make in the life of a Project Manager? Thomas Swaak, Global Change & Transformation Manager at Philips. As we develop towards a Smart Society, the way we live, work and play will change, be enhanced and enriched in ways we could never have imagined previously. From the developments and trends evolving within a Smart Society to the very specific area of technology-enabled communities of practice, there is much value to be gained for Project Managers. We will explore and make some practical and inspiring discoveries in both areas. Wrap-up & Networking drinks Close ●●● 5

Thursday, October 15th - Chapter Meeting on Change Management: Why to Change & How to Change – Storytelling as Change Enabler -
Location still to be determined, please let ceo@pmi-netherlands-chapter.org now if you can host us.
Enabling effectual Organizational Change is becoming more and more common business in the profession of Project and Programme Management. On one hand we see the need for critical competencies for defining, creating and directing Change, addressing the “why" of Change. On the other hand we see the need for “how” to activate Change with well-chosen interventions. The main objective of both is creating effectual Change: Change which pays off. In this session we address the “why” and “how” of Change with two views: •
Change Approach Choosing and communicating the correct Change approach together with your Change Sponsor is key. But how do you select the right approach? How do you convince your sponsor who wants to have an effectual change? In this session, Bert van der Hooft MCM will facilitate an interactive session in which you will learn to convince your sponsor about the right Change Approach. He will share two essential instruments for defining and communicating the Change Strategy and influencing your Change Sponsors and Stakeholders. Do note that you will be invited to a short online presentation as a preparation (or pre-read) in order to ensure you understand more of the content which contain technical terms. If you wish to attend this session, please ensure that you make time to read this presentation so you can get the most value out of the session. You will receive the link several days before the session. Bert van der Hooft has been working in Project & Programme Manager for years. Bert has a degree in Change Management and is a lecturer in the MBA of the Rotterdam Business School as well a teacher in the Strategic Programme Management module of AOG School of Management. He is the "shareman" of the Management of Change Cooperative, a training institute specialized in Change.
•
Storytelling Everybody has a story, but it ise seldom told. In our professional lives we prefer to stay with the facts, which ends up in a lot of boring presentations in which good intentions disappears in explanation and technical jargon. In this session Theo Hendriks lets you embrace the power of Storytelling. Theo will share the basics of Storytelling and challenge you to share your inspiring and captivating story, which will can give a boost to the performance of your project or programme with stories that go straight to people’s heart and mind. If you are searching for a way to make your presentations more captivating and interesting, you should add this session to your ‘TO ATTEND’ list. Theo is an author of Storytelling books and won in 2010 the European Excellence award (category Change Communication).

ISO for Projects This article provides news from the world of the development of ISO standards for Project, Programme and Portfolio Management. The Netherlands input into this is supplied by the NEN standards committee 381236 and the ISO for projects’ Local Interest Work Group, a collaboration between PMI Netherlands Chapter and IPMA-NL. The overall portfolio of work is managed by the international ISO Technical Committee TC/258 and the actual documents are prepared and compiled by Study and Working Groups. Portfolio Management On July 1st 2015, the ISO 21504:2015 “Project, Programme and Portfolio Management – guidance on Portfolio Management” was published and is now available for sale on the ISO Web store: http://www.iso.org/iso/home/store/catalogue_tc/catalogue_detail.htm?csnumber=61518 ISO 21504:2015 provides guidance on the principles of Project and Programme Portfolio Management. It is relevant to any type of organization including public or private and any size organization or sector. The guidance presented is intended to be adapted to suit the specific environment of the project and programme portfolio. The document does not provide guidance on Project Management, Programme Management, or general business Portfolio Management (e.g. Financial Portfolio Management). The NEN standards committee for Project Management still has to decide on the translation of ISO 21504:2015 into Dutch and on the adoption as an NEN-ISO standard for The Netherlands, like we did for ISO 21500 “Guidance on Project Management.” Governance of Projects, Programmes and Portfolios On July 6th 2015, a ballot for ISO/DIS 21505 “Project, Programme and Portfolio Management – Guidance on Governance” has been opened for 3 months. This standard describes the context and provides guidance on the framework and principles for the governance of Projects, Programmes and Portfolios from pre-project considerations to post-project evaluations reflecting current practices. It is designed to assist those in governing bodies and at the Executive and Senior Management level of organizations to fulfill their governing duties with respect to leadership, regulatory, fiduciary and ethical obligations for Projects, Programmes and Portfolios within their organizations. Studies into the failure of Projects and Programmes around the world have provided supporting data for the conclusion that a common root cause was a failure of governance. Failure often results in substantial losses including money and other resources, as well as lost opportunities. So, indeed a very relevant document for all organizations. Think of the failures of large infrastructure and government ICT projects in the Netherlands! From 22 July until 6 October 2015 NEN provides an electronic version of this document for online reviewing and submitting comments to everyone interested in The Netherlands, see http://www.normontwerpen.nen.nl/Home/Details/441. We will invite you to have a look and deliver your comments. After the ballot, the Working Group 2 will adjudicate the received comments and prepare the next version of the document in November this year. ●●● 7

ISO 21500 maintenance In the meantime, a Study Group has started to look at the maintenance of ISO 21500:2012 “Guidance on Project Management,” which was published 3 years ago. The purpose is to recommend whether a maintenance Working Group should be established to take steps to maintain ISO 21500. Future In the last week of August 2015 in Toronto, Canada the TC/258 will have plenary meetings to discuss the current status of documents and the future work plan and three Study/Working Groups will also meet. Two delegates from The Netherlands will ensure that our viewpoints are represented. The estimated timing for the next set of publications is as follows: 2016: ISO 21503 “Project, Programme and Portfolio Management - Guidance on Programme Management“; 2016: ISO 21505 “Project, Programme and Portfolio Management - Guidance on Governance“; 2017: ISO 21506 “Project, Programme and Portfolio Management - Vocabulary“; 2018: ISO 21500 “Project, Programme and Portfolio Management - Guidance on Project Management“ (revision). We will report more details as the publications come to the market. We plan to provide more insight on these ISO developments in a future Chapter Meeting. The NEN standards committee is always looking for new members, participating in the actual development of the ISO standards in this field. If you are interested or if you like to receive more information, please contact Rommert Stellingwerf.

PMI Netherlands Summit 4th Ed. — The Secret of Project Management, Next Practices Demystified, Part 2 The PMI Netherlands Chapter organized its fourth annual PMI Netherlands Summit in cooperation with CKC (Centrum voor Kennis Communicatie) seminars on June 11th, Bussum, the Netherlands. The Programme Board prepared an exciting collection of keynote sessions, interactive sessions and master classes, all presented by national and international leaders and experts. The theme of this year’s summit “The Secret of Project Management; Next Practices Demystified, gathered an audience from the Netherlands and beyond. After the opening by Peter Storm (Kennis&Co) and his reflection on “uncle Hans,” Professor Hans Bakker (Delft University) introduced the need for next practices referring to his research and book 'Management of Engineering Projects - People are Key.' The first keynote speaker, Bert van Eekelen (Arcadis) explained the importance of Stakeholder Engagement: “To be successful, it is all about understanding what’s happening backstage or even in the dressing rooms.” A glimpse of the importance and development of Stakeholder Engagement in a complex project as the development of the “Amsterdam Zuidas.” After the lunch break, the second keynote speaker was Beth Partleton, past PMI Board Chair. She currently serves on the Certification Governance Committee (CGC). She envisions that a huge Project Management labour and talent shortage is upon us – and will cost the world US$340 billion by the Year 2020. She stated that global markets and executives need to transform and should use PMI’s Pulse of the Profession® research to accelerate and develop the leadership, business and strategic management skills that will help Project Managers successfully meet evolving expectations in a complex business environment.

Marco Eykelenboom, Project Manager at Fluor, was the final keynote speaker. Marco pleased the crowd in a very entertaining way. He told us that most companies today nurture and develop their best practices, but fail to acknowledge that a high performing team really makes the difference. Reflect this on your own experience, what was your most successful project? High chance you do not remember the procedures and practices used to control all elements of the iron triangle of project management. Instead, you probably remember the effectiveness of the team….
Excellent networking opportunities during a break in the intimate venue
Some quotes from the audience: • • • •
• • •
Overall quality higher than last year very good set up, nice place, good time management Very informative. Good speakers, good venue, good organization The 90 minutes Masterclass, which look long, were over in a blink of the eye. We were taken by the hand through the ideas, examples and working sessions, without paying attention to the time at all. Good view on importance of talent management Adrian Pagdin was at his best as presenter ... Energetic, involved, good new insights. Practical.
Throughout the day the audience could attend a variety of lectures and Masterclasses in three parallel tracks, focusing on: • • • •
The Next Practices of Excellent Organizations The Next Practices of Excellent (virtual) Teams The Next Practices of Excellent Project Managers The Next Practices deployed
Feedback from the participants was overwhelmingly positive. They appreciated the high quality of the keynote speeches, the attractive programme, the intimacy of the venue and the excellent networking opportunities. The PMI Netherlands Chapter is thankful for all the support of its sponsors who helped make this event a success. The Chapter is looking forward to the 2016 and first lustrum edition of the PMI Netherlands Summit on September 15th 2016 at Spant, Bussum, the Netherlands. See you there! Thomas Swaak had a very nice, interactive workshop. Fine examples, good interaction and much fun. Marco Eykelenboom made a clear call for Project Managers to use measurement to support them in their role. The MC with Thomas Swaak was the most interesting. It gives an oversight ion how the brain works, and he made a nice switch to future habits of Project Managers. Marco Eykelenboom had the most practical and inspiring presentation. Practical Lessons in Stakeholder Management of Adrian Pagdin. Good topic, well- presented. Very engaging speaker. Happy to see that the ''quality'' went upwards again, in comparison to last year.
So what would I say about the summit …? .I was invited as a Speaker but I became a seminar addict. So many inspiring presentations on the future of Project Management makes me think that we are in good hands. My consolation from the day? It’s about the People. Thanks, Adrian Pagdin. Excellent event, it was really great connecting with this professional Project Management community. Really beneficial on highlighting behavioural elements of Project Management. Combination of content and context build high performing Project Leaders. For me it was a PMI 2.0 transformation. The conference enables readiness of project leaders for the next generation projects with maximum collective conscience. Regards, Richard Muller. Under the title "Next Practices Demystified" a program focusing on the future approaches required for more successful project performance was staged. A number of interesting speakers presented a coherent and stimulating program, which clearly triggered discussion, enthusiasm and extensive networking. A successful, fruitful and thought-provoking day. Met vriendelijke groeten/With kind regards, Prof.Dr. Hans L.M. Bakker. Every year it's hard to outdo the previous edition of the PMI Netherlands Summit, but the organizers managed to pull it off (again). A very inspiring day with new eye-openers on Stakeholder Management, very visual weekly progress reports (photos!) and scientific approaches to get team interactions visualized - and highlight the areas with insufficient interaction. All in all a great inspiring day, with sufficient food for thought and concrete ideas for improvement to bring into practice. Looking forward to the next Summit! Jacques Dunselman - Principal Project Manager – PMx.

Almost none (of us) learned Project Management in regular (higher) education, but all think Project Management education should be part of the regular curriculum in higher education. A challenge worth taking. Greetings Steven Nijhuis I am very happy that I participated in this year's congress! It was a great experience – I heard from inspirational and informative speakers, met likeminded professionals and learned about the best practices in Project Management. I am also very honoured to have been invited to the event as a speaker where I shared my lessons learned, tips and advice from my journey of breaking into Project Management as a profession. I hope you enjoyed the presentation and look forward to next year’s event! Congrats and well done to the speakers and organizers! Best, Kamil Mroz.

AMI Consultancy Training: Project Recovery! An often experienced Project Management phenomenon: The project is delaying! Conflicts! Complaints! The project is derailing….! The direct damage, measured in loss of time and money, is huge. However indirect damages, like loss of reputation, liabilities for lost revenue of the client can even surpass the cost of the direct damage. Can derailed projects be brought back on track? Yes it can! And Project Managers are key in making this happen. The Project Manager should read the early warning signals and adjust the project activities, governance or way(s) of working accordingly. Even if the project has been detailed already, the Project Manager can contribute by applying the correct measures in their right order and context. AMI Consultancy has developed their Masterclass Project Recovery, based on their rich experience in Project Support, Consultancy and Evaluation. The curriculum is lectured in an interactive manner helping the Project Manager to learn prevent derailing projects and/or get them back on track, i.e. the art of project recovery. On June 2nd the first Masterclass was held. The next two individual stand-alone lectures will take place on September 7th and December 7th 2015.
