Upcoming events Chapter Meeting December 14th, 2015, INSYNQ, Eindhoven Our last Chapter event of the year will bring you great ideas and underlines the Corporate Social Responsibility (MVO) objectives of the chapter by giving attention to sustainability and contributing to less waste and more efficiency in projects in general. In essence the theme is that project execution, done in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way can bring you, as Project Manager, added value while meeting your project objectives and contributing to a better living environment. Curious? Mark this event in your Calendar on December 14th and read on! ‘Green’ or ‘sustainable’ project management’ is identified as one of the most important global project management trends today. A growing number of publications link the concepts of sustainability to project management, so it may be concluded that the integration of sustainability in business has now also found its way to the project management domain. Dutch author Gilbert Silvius is considered one of the opinion leaders on the topic, with numerous articles and three books on the topic published. On December 14th Gilbert will introduce us to the why, what and how of ‘Sustainable project management.’ In addition we will be presented some real project examples by André van Naarden, program manager of one of KPN’s largest programs in the last few years, who managed to bring sustainable project management in practice and voluntarily contribute to the strategic sustainability objectives of KPN. Chapter Meeting January 18th, 2016, Hogeschool Utrecht As the PMI Netherlands Chapter tries to offer you a compelling and diverse program of topics, ranging from methodologies, best practices to personal development, this time we will review the soft skills required to activate the best in people and teams. Are we aware that our project team members have different perceptions and backgrounds while looking at the tasks at hand in the project? What does this mean for their motivation? How can Project Managers take away hurdles and provide trust and a productive environment, by looking at their own behavior and approach? During the first part of the Chapter meeting on January 18th, Ivo Hoogland (team & personal coach) will provide us with differences in people based on their points of view, drivers and perception. Knowing their way of looking at reality is where it starts, knowing how to approach them – and how you want to be approached – at least as important. After the break Hans Veenman and Marieke Strobbe (team and personal coaches) will take Ivo’s insights further and show us – being project managers – how our own preferences are helping and blocking the development of our teams. What do we (unconsciously) do that is NOT enabling our teams to move forward? Agenda 17:00 18:00 18:05

BIG10 moving forward As per our PMI Netherlands short term strategy objectives, we are approaching and involving senior managers (of project management) of the 10 companies that provide most of our Chapter members. The aim is to realise how the PMI Netherlands Chapter can improve its services towards them, as well as to work on the profile (and related curriculum) that the project manager of 2020 needs to have. This will enable these larger corporations to adjust their ranking, hiring and training programs according to our joint professional view of the near future! A small team of volunteers has held two live meetings with the BIG10 participant and several internal meetings to streamline the process. The team, existing of Martijn Jong, Henk Smits, ●●● 8 PMI Netherlands Chapter | Postbus 90261 | 1006 BG Amsterdam - Vakvereniging voor Project-, Programma- en Portfoliomanagers www.PMI-Netherlands-Chapter.org

Anton Zandhuis, Henk-Jan Molenkamp and led by our former president Cees Pijs, has enabled a platform for the senior managers to develop their vision of the near future. We agreed together that besides valuable discussions and comparison of each other project management profile requirements and framework, we will work towards a joint white paper about the profile of the Project Manager 2020 and its changing roles and responsibilities. The white paper will be published through the PMI channels and made available for internal management and HR to allow for adjustment of their operations, training and resource population accordingly. Big 10 The BIG10 consists of the following companies: De Nederlandsche Bank, Wartsila, Alcatel, Lucent, Shell, Philips, NXP, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Ericsson, T-Systems and nominee Tebodin. Updates We intend to provide our members with short updates on our progress via the newsletter and LinkedIn, but at least in the Spring / early Summer of 2016 we hope to publish the white paper with our findings, ideas and recommendations. Perhaps a new standard (agreed and commonly used) corporate framework of project manager skills and abilities will emerge…. Henk-Jan Molenkamp – CEO

From the desk of the Director Events Program Management - Local Interest Work Group - reaction Since the revival meeting last year in the office of The PMO Company, I've been an enthusiastic member of the Program Management - LIWg. Due to changes in my work I am increasingly exposed to Program Management activities. These sessions have interesting topics followed by good discussions. After such a meeting I usually drive home with some new ideas and approaches, something to consider and a few new contacts. The organisation ensures the various topics of Program Management are covered: soft skills, benefits, governance, etc. against a diverse background of industries. Since I work in the Energy sector which is increasingly driven by national and European politics, for me this mix is both educational and inspiring: I am exposed to program content I never expected to know anything about. And as we all know, business knowledge is an important element of our work, so every little bit helps. There is usually a good turn-out, but fresh faces with diverse backgrounds are always welcome to spice up the meetings! So feel free to look at the event calendar and join the next meeting! My first PMI Leadership Institute Meeting by Rochelle Röber - Director Professional Development

In October this year I had the privilege to be able to attend my first PMI Leadership Institute Meeting in Orlando, Florida, USA. What an experience! But wait….PMI Leadership Institute…does that ring any bells by you? Do you know what that is? PMI Leadership Institute

The PMI Leadership Institute is an organization that is dedicated to helping PMI’s volunteers to be the leaders that they are. PMI invests generously in training and support e.g. by means of LIM’s (Leadership Institute meetings) that are held for each region (which constitutes a group of countries) and Region Meetings. Region 8

The Netherlands falls into Region 8: North West Europe, along with Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Luxembourg, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK. Region 8 also has other groupings namely South West Europe, Central Europe and Eastern Europe. I will be happy to let you see which countries fall into those groupings, so just tug on my arm at the next Chapter meeting and ask me about these Regions. Support network

The PMI Leadership Institute has built up a large support network of Advisory groups and Mentors, to assist each Region with their operations and issues, and to provide resources and assistance to the Chapters in each region so that we can continuously improve and offer value to our members. Our Region Mentor for 2016 is Matthias Georgson Petrén, PMP – a young and energetic leader from Sweden whose good command of the Dutch language will surprise you! Yes, we’re in good hands! Besides the Region Mentors, PMI assigns a staff member as well from the EMEA office in Brussels. And, I mentioned the Advisory Groups? There’s the AMAG which provides resources and advice to academic institutions, the CMAG which is a Chapter Advisory group, a Registered Consultants Advisory Group, a Registered education Provider Advisory Group, a Social Media advisory Group, and more….Besides these the Board of Directors of PMI global are supported by Board support committees. All of these people are volunteers and leaders in their own right. The Leadership Institute makes it possible to have shorter and more effective lines of communication between all of these organisations and the Chapters and communities out in the world. What a volunteer needs to know

So, back to my first LIM. You all have attended our PMI SUMMIT, so you know that you are ●●● 12 PMI Netherlands Chapter | Postbus 90261 | 1006 BG Amsterdam - Vakvereniging voor Project-, Programma- en Portfoliomanagers www.PMI-Netherlands-Chapter.org

presented with a day’s programme filled with project management knowledge. The focus here is on what you need to know in order to do your project management jobs. Well, the focus at the LIM is on what a volunteer needs to know in order to perform his or her volunteer role more effectively. So I got to choose from association governance tracks, leadership tracks, marketing tracks, volunteer engagement tracks and my personal favourite, professional development tracks. In each track various sessions or talks were held and one had much choice. You came into a room where others from many different Chapters sat, knowing that they were all doing the same thing that you do – networking was therefore great fun because we all had similar things in common and could share experiences, tips and make alliances for the future. Best of all for me was being selected to participate in the Leadership Institute Master Class for 2016. This is a yearlong programme of leadership development – the ultimate opportunity for a PMI volunteer. Next Newsletter

In the next newsletter I will go deeper into what this is and how the Chapter will benefit from it, but for now, have a look at the photographs to get a sense of the LIM and the fun to be had if you volunteer with PMI in service of your peers in the global and local project management community! Enjoy!
