Newsletter September/October, 2016 | www.pmi-netherlands-chapter.org | Volume 58, Issue 7 Chapter meetings news Q4 November 16th 2016 - Telecom & Risk Management Risk management is both an exciting and boring aspect of Project Management. Are you in a transformation PMO? Are you managing a portfolio of projects? Key is that you understand the risks and how to qualify them and make them manageable. How do key players in the Telecom sector this and how can we be supported? At an exciting location yet to be disclosed either in western or southern part of the Netherlands we will have an evening to remember in which we combine PPM, Telecom and a tool. This covers the technical project management in the Talent Triangle. To make it truly stick we combine it with a kickoff of the Chapter’s Diversity & Inclusion Local Interest Work Group (LIWG). December 14th 2016 - Tendering for large projects: Value? To close the year, we will have an event on the Strategic & Business Management leg of the Talent Triangle. BUILDING TOGETHER It is our conviction that, by stacking knowledge and competencies, we can make a fundamental contribution to your goal and the society in which we live. We do so by focusing on the relationship in our contacts, by taking a result-oriented approach to projects and by operating in a socially responsible manner. Who would this have to be in his or her organization’s mission? At an exciting location yet to be disclosed either in southern or western part of the Netherlands we will have a practical experience on strategy and the business to materialize. Top

LIWG (Local Interest Work Group) news LIWG “Diversity & Inclusion” The Local Interest Work Group “Diversity & Inclusion” kicks off during our Chapter meeting on November 16th, see above.

LIWG “Project Management for Social Good” - Are you interested in ‘Giving back to society’? PMI Netherlands Chapter plans to support learning or teaching Project Management for social good via a new Local Interest Work Group “Project Management for Social Good”. In our chapter meeting at ORTEC on October 11th we discussed our plan to implement PMI Educational Foundation activities in the Netherlands in a structured way, based on the following principles: – Engagement is based on available capacity and personal commitment of individual volunteers (“only promise what you can deliver, and deliver what you promise”) – Bureaucracy will be minimal – Target groups on personal basis will be stimulated and supported. Volunteers in practice have more drive and feel more responsibility to support their own community or target group. The response from the attendees was very positive, and already a dozen members have volunteered to step in. Do you want to join as well? In that case just send a ‘one-line’ e-mail to Ger van der Geld (mailto:dal-gvdg@pmi-netherlands-chapter.org ). You will then receive relevant information and a submission form, on which you can specify which activities and target groups you prefer. Please respond now, because we want to start on short notice…. Top

Newsletter September/October, 2016 | www.pmi-netherlands-chapter.org | Volume 58, Issue 7 Impressions from the PMI Netherlands Summit 5th Edition — Disruption! by Cees Pijs and Bert Luppens The PMI Netherlands Chapter organised its fifth annual PMI Netherlands Summit in cooperation with CKC (Centrum voor Kennis Communicatie) seminars on September 15th, Bussum, the Netherlands. The programme board prepared an exciting collection of keynote sessions, interactive sessions and master classes, all presented by national and international leaders and experts. The theme of this year’s summit “Disruption”, gathered an audience from the Netherlands and beyond. After the opening by Thomas Swaak (Philips), John Smith (Philips, Male grooming) shared his thoughts on disruption or rather continuous innovation as he sees it. Finding the balance between running a large operation and continuous improvement is essential to keep the business healthy. These business principals are forcing project management to be smarter than ever before. After these insights from a business perspective, Thomas Swaak had a disrupting key-note called “disruption: the b*lsh*t, the beauty and the business. In less than 10 minutes he had the audience talking to each other, so rather than a one direction key-note we experienced a very interactive session in which we learned about our own disruption fears, possibilities and opportunities. John Smith After the lunch break professor Chris Loch, dean of Cambridge Judge Business Thomas Swaak School, looked at disruption from a project management perspective. His key-note on “dealing with uncertainty and complexity of strategic projects” was an amazing experience of how projects get disrupted and what a project manager can do to maintain direction. Great insights, presented with a typical touch of English humour. That for sure got us through the after lunch dip.

Brian Weiss, Vice President at the Project Management Institute, was the final keynote speaker. Brian expressed the expected shortage in well skilled Chris Loch and trained project management professionals in his key-note: The Next Generation Project Manager - “Are you ready?”. A personal and enthusiastic plea for PMI’s talent triangle and the importance of training and developing project managers who are able to handle near future challenges. His insights into the Weiss Inc. family business was outstanding. It was a great contribution to everything PMI stands for. Throughout the day the audience could attend a variety of lectures and masterclasses in three parallel tracks, focusing on a variety of “disrupting” subjects.

Brian Weiss

First hand feedback from the participants was more positive than ever before. They appreciated the high quality of the keynote speeches, the attractive programme, the intimacy of the venue and the excellent networking opportunities. The PMI Netherlands Chapter is thankful for all the support of its sponsors who helped make this event a success. And we are all looking forward to the 2017 edition of the PMI Netherlands Summit. Information and impressions on this event can be found on its website.. Top

Newsletter September/October, 2016 | www.pmi-netherlands-chapter.org | Volume 58, Issue 7 Project Management Research news “Poster Session Meeting” for Project Management Researchers As you could read in our August-September newsletter, researchers from universities and higher educational institutions together with IPMA Netherlands and PMI Netherlands Chapter have started a platform to stimulate and align research on Project Management in the Netherlands. Based on the outcome of a first meeting with researchers on March 31 st this year, a core team:  started an inventory of ongoing project management research activities in the Netherlands. The idea is to publish this on the websites van IPMA-NL en PMI Netherlands Chapter, and keep it up to date.  aims to publish on project management research in the Netherlands in 2017, for instance in a special edition of IPMA’s Dutch magazine “Projectie”. The publishing possibilities within PMI are not completely clear yet. Another idea that was picked up was to organize a meeting with “poster sessions” of ongoing research activities, where researchers present their research to their colleagues. This “Poster Session Meeting” will take place at the Onderwijsdag projectmanagement on November 24th from 9:00-12:00 at the Technical University in Delft. If you are interested to join, please contact Steven Nijhuis (steven.nijhuis@hu.nl) for further details. Please also inform him if you will be bringing a poster. If so: the size expected is A1 or A0.

Newsletter September/October, 2016 | www.pmi-netherlands-chapter.org | Volume 58, Issue 7 Research into teaching project management What are essential project management processes and does that change with experience? I’m doing research on teaching students project management, and designed a short survey on project management processes. The survey will take about 7 minutes. I like to invite many project managers, sponsors and team members to share their insights through this survey. The survey can be found here, your interest is appreciated. Steven Nijhuis, steven.nijhuis@hu.nl . Information: The teaching of project management to students is surrounded with a multitude of questions. What should they know and be able to do? How should it be taught? In literature there is no common agreement. In practice often a technical perspective is adopted, favoring planning and budgeting over people skills like negotiating and influencing. Internationally project management education is often criticized, without offering alternatives or solutions. A clear understanding of the processes that are essential for a junior project manager is missing. I presume that the focus of a junior compared to an experienced project manager is different. A junior project manager might well be more focused on the execution of the project (monitoring and adjusting). An experienced project manager might be more focused on the political stakeholder process. That is why this survey is aimed at essential processes. If enough project managers, sponsors and team members share their insights, I will be able to produce the expectations on a junior project manager. The results will provide a needed direction in what higher education can do to prepare project management students. Do you want to know more about the research, like previous results, usability etc., feel free to contact me directly. A big thank you for responding to my survey: http://survey.hu.nl/index.php/155529?lang=en. Steven Nijhuis, Hogeschool Utrecht.
