As a leader, you have the responsibility to constantly learn and gain knowledge that allows you to properly manage your teams and efficiently engage stakeholders. In addition, it’s recommended that you have a knowledge management practice in place, including lessons learned from past projects. The goal is to avoid past mistakes and integrate the best features into your projects. In such scenario, the PMI offers almost unlimited training and reading material that you can use, ranging from webinars, online courses, face to face trainings, conferences, among others. You’ll find all kinds of topics, targeted at a variety of audience with different levels of difficulty. Also, taking a volunteer role for the PMI is an extraordinary way to acquire those skill you were looking for. The benefit is that it’s a real experience, where you’ll be surrounded by an extraordinary group of senior project managers working also as volunteers for the PMI, who are willing to provide guidance and coaching. I want to leave you with this simple but powerful quote from the great Greek philosopher Aristoteles: “Educating the mind without educating the heart is not education at all”.

PMI Netherlands Summit 2017 Reconstructing Project Management.

Project Management 0.5 explore the essence So, in this Summit we will explore the essence of project management. What is the key role of project management, what are the required capabilities? The goal is to create a highly interactive summit, a true learning experience in which we, all together, will discover what project management is all about.

“Everyone has a plan: until they get punched in the face” ~ Mike Tyson We believe it is time to reconstruct project management as a discipline. In a world where disruption has become the norm, where boundaries between disciplines are fading and where multi-disciplinary collaboration is perhaps the only way to ensure lasting business and transformation results, it pays off to think without a box, to go greenfield to an extreme, and to reinvent who we are as project managers. In order to do that we have to go back to the essence of what it means to do the work we do, to set that off against the essence of the world we now live in and to come up with core ways of working and being that will actually make the difference.

You’re invited to participate in this leading conference on Project Management by submitting an innovative best practice or workshop corresponding with our themes. If you would like to submit a valuable suggestion, take a look into the conditions and submit your paper before April 27th 2017. Go to the PMI Netherlands Summit 2017 website and find out more.

The 2017 challenge… We are preparing for a highly interactive conference. You will be challenged to participate and contribute, speakers are facilitators and will encourage engagement. Preferably we limit the use of traditional means like slides. Rather we would like speakers to encourage dialogue and capture the essence of project management looked at from different viewpoints. While interacting we will reconstruct project management. The objective is to conclude this conference with a debated, if possible shared, view on “project management 0.5 – a reconstruction of project management”.

Not submitting a paper, but interested in a PMI Netherlands Summit ticket? Very early bird members of the PMI Netherlands Chapter receive a huge discount! Register now and visit this unique Conference for only € 147,50. Hurry because this offer only applies to the first 25 subscriptions that are member of the PMI Netherlands Chapter. Project Management Institute Educational Foundation (PMIEF) PMIEF is a charitable nonprofit organization that develops and delivers innovative programs and educational resources including scholarships, grants and awards that strengthen both teaching and learning. Wonder what social good looks like? Well this is it, the children (and nonprofit organizations) in our community need us. Project oriented work is fast becoming one of the largest job skills required, it's also linked to higher-pay, in the US for example, we can help the next generation just by sharing knowledge you already have. Academic Outreach PMI Netherlands is looking for volunteers to help translate PM related teaching content from English (and other languages) to Dutch. We are also looking for schools or NGO's that may be interested in our PM based coaching or workshops. We are also looking for school and NGO liaisons and teachers to bring our content to life. Want more info? Check out https://pmief.org Interested in helping? Send an email to academic-outreach@pmi-netherlands-chapter.org

Global PMI Press Release Coming Soon: PMP Exam Update The Project Management Professional (PMP)®, along with all PMI certifications, is driven by current practices in the profession. Because project management is evolving, so is the PMP exam. Did You Know? As a result of the release of the PMBOK® Guide – Sixth Edition in September 2017, the PMP exam will change soon. These updates will ensure the exam content is consistent with the PMBOK® Guide. Active practitioners from around the world author our exam questions as well as the PMBOK® Guide to ensure the PMP remains relevant and reflects current practice. What to Expect on the Updated Exam Although the PMP is not a test of the PMBOK Guide®, it is one of the primary references for the exam. Some of the updates you can expect to see surround lexicon changes and terminology used within the exam as well as harmonization of process groups, tools, and techniques. If you’re utilizing the PMBOK Guide® as a study tool for the PMP, you can expect to find the following updates in the PMBOK Guide® – Sixth Edition:  A new chapter on the role of the project manager has been added to focus on leading projects effectively – competencies, experience and skills that are all necessary.  Two Knowledge Areas have been re-named to more accurately reflect which elements can be managed… and which cannot: o Time Management is now Schedule Management o Human Resource Management is now Resource Management Every Knowledge Area features four new sections: • Key Concepts • Trends and Emerging Practices • Tailoring Considerations • Considerations for Agile/Adaptive Environments

Past Event: The role of Project Manager and/or Scrum Master The PMI Netherlands Chapter and Zdenka de Booijk organized another networking meetup on the subject: The role of Project Manager and/or Scrum Master. The roles of Scrum Master and Project Manager continue to be discussed in different ways with most comments distinguishing between the two roles and indicating they are not compatible, and not suited to be combined. In the group of enthusiastic Project Managers, Scrum Masters and to-be Product owners we discussed different challenges this topic brings about, e.g. how a Project Manager can transform to an effective Product Owner or Scrum Master and is it necessary at all? To choose the democratic way of topics discussed we used the Lean Coffee approach to give everybody the right to express him/herself which was a new way of collaborating for some of us. Very fruitful discussion can be framed by word of Camilla who submitted the following feedback and made the organizers feel satisfied about the successful session: “Good morning Zdenka, good meetup, I feel that we had high quality discussions! The participatory method you used worked very well in our group, I think. also, other participant said it was one of the most useful meetup events he attended. Compared to other meetups that stay shallow and are mostly a way to expand your network, this made for a good amount of co-learning.”

Global PMI Article An Extra Boost: Coaching Can Help Project Managers Gain Confidence and Unlock Potential By Todd Materazzi, PMP One key relationship can make or break a project. Yet many new project managers lack the people skills necessary to handle difficult stakeholder relationships. Coaching matures and molds an individual so he or she can better transition from a technical role into a leader. The coach can serve as a sounding board for ideas as well as help project managers learn communication strategies and conquer professional fears—all of which leads to smoother relationships with stakeholders. Coaches are also skilled at helping people address behavior patterns that regularly derail progress. This skill can be used to help project managers develop the adaptability that today's organizations require. By working with coaches to question longstanding methods and reveal blind spots, project managers can be better-positioned to be able to respond quickly to changing conditions.

Traditionally, business coaching was reserved for top-tier executives, directors and management teams. Though that is beginning to change, project managers and their teams are still often overlooked when it comes to coaching. However, coaching for project managers and their teams offers considerable promise for improving project outcomes.

Coaching matures an individual so he or she can transition from a technical role into a leader.

I once managed a project in a matrixed environment where the stakeholders were in charge of deliverables. However, the project quickly became dysfunctional. Deadlines were missed, and scope creep became the norm. As I struggled to right the project, I realized stakeholders and other team members did not trust each other. Looking back, I can see that a business coach could have helped me prevent some of these problems. One-on-one coaching to drive professional growth would have equipped me and my team with additional knowledge and skills to handle the tough stakeholder situation.

Coaching should occur in a one-on-one (face-toface or teleconference) format. The employee uses assessments and checklists to measure his or her status and progress. Conversations are guided, not directed, so that through reflection, the employee generates the next logical step in support of his or her journey. Coaching periods often take six to 12 months, with coaching meetings held biweekly so business operations aren't interrupted and the person can reflect and make adjustments between sessions. The coaching period should end with the employee receiving a final summary outlining key performance indicators, impediments that were overcome and next steps. A successful coaching experience can create momentum to power a project manager's development for years to come.

Coaching can help employees gain confidence, become more self-aware, set and achieve goals, and unlock potential. For this reason, it is particularly well-suited to help project managers grow in two areas: stakeholder management and agility.
