YOU SHALL SEE WHAT YOU SHALL SEE.
ladies and gentlemen we present you THE PEEPBOX: a box that adds an extra experience to a common gesture - seating in a public place. One can see a video-art projection in a lunchtime break, or while waiting for the bus. it transforms a basic public action in a private encounter between people and art. AT A GLANCE IT LOOKS PECULIAR BUT EVERYBODY KNOWS HOW IT WORKS. It is a strange box with a friendly cut-out in the shape of a man’s outline that begets a dialogue with the human body. the interface with the bench leaves the viewer with a clear understanding of intention, engagING him with both the ‘object’ and the ‘object within the object’. at the same time it poses questions and threats: is this for me? for everyone? what’s inside?
?
THE PEEPBOX IS AN ASSOCIATION BETWEEN A FORM OF ART-DISPLAY AND A COMMON BENCH. [AND WE CAN IMAGINE A LARGE NUMBER OF PLACES TO SEAT WORLDWIDE: A SMALL WALL, A LAKE BORDER, A BIG STONE AT THE SEASIDE, AN ESPLANADE CHAIR]
THE PEEPBOX DEGREES OF INTERACTIVITY WITH PUBLIC JUST DEPEND ON CITIZENS’ ATTITUDES.
GAINSBOROUGH’S ‘MR AND MRS ANDREWS’ WITH PEEPBOX. [IN THE EARLY 1780s GAINSBOROUGH HAD HIS ONE PEEPSHOW BOX: THROUGH ITS LENS ONE VIEWED LANDSCAPES AND SEASCAPES PAINTED ON GLASS AND LIT FROM BEHIND BY CANDLES]
THE PEEPBOX DEGREES OF INTERACTIVITY JUST DEPEND ON ARTISTS’ PURPOSES.
THE POSSIBILITIES FOR ARTISTS TO WORK WITH THE MINIATURE SCALE ARE OPEN-ENDED, PRESENTING THE CHALLENGE OF HAVING TO CREATE A LARGE WORLD IN A SMALL SPACE.
A SUSTAINABLE DEVICE FOR ART-DISPLAY. WHEREVER PLACED IT WILL PRODUCE ITS OWN ENERGY.
IT CAN BE A CLOSED BOX WITH A VIDEO-ART PROJECTION IN THE INTERIOR. OR ONE CAN PLACE INSIDE A SCULPTURE, OR A PICTURE ILLUMINATED BY A SPOTLIGHT.
OR IT CAN HAVE AN OPEN WINDOW FRAMING A PERFORMANCE ON THE OUTSIDE, OR PROJECTING AN IMAGE ON A SCREEN OR ON A BUILDING DURING THE NIGHT.
