Man jailed 8 years for swindling woman

An Area Court in Jos on Thursday sentenced one Hashim Yakubu, 28, to eight years imprisonment for swindling a sales girl of three android phones valued N261,000.

The judge, Thomas Ajitise, sentenced the convict after he pleaded guilty to breach of trust and cheating, and begged the court for leniency.

Ajitise gave the convict an option of N500,000 fine or eight years imprisonment for breach of trust and cheating.

The judge also ordered the convict to pay N261,000 as compensation to the complainant.

Earlier, the police prosecutor, Insp Ibrahim Gokwat, told the court that the case was reported at the A Division Police Station on Jan. 8, by the complainant, Ms Patricia Sati.

The complainant said Yakubu, who claimed to be a lawyer, came to her shop in 2019 and collected three phones from her to resale and return the proceeds, but absconded to unknown destination.

The prosecutor further told the court that during police investigation the convict confessed to have committed the act.

Gokwat said the offence contravened Plateau State Penal Code law. (NAN)

Kano ADP guber candidate condemns attack on campaign vehicles

The ADP Governorship Campaign Council in Kano state has condemned alleged attack on campaign vehicles recently in the state.

In a statement yesterday by Abbas Yushau Yusuf, Spokesman ADP Gubernatorial Campaign Council the council alleged that the attack took place at Mandawari area in the state metropolis.

The statement said Sha’aban Ibrahim Sharada, the ADP Governorship candidate, had issued a statement, condemning the violent act and calling for peace during the campaign trail.

“The ADP Governorship Campaign was launched today at the Sani Abacha Youth

Centre in Kano with a mission to bring positive change to the state. However, these threats to our peaceful campaign must be addressed by the security agencies.

“We demand immediate action from the security agencies to maintain law and order and bring the perpetrators to justice. The ADP Governorship Campaign will not be intimidated by these cowardly acts and we will continue to spread our message of hope and change throughout Kano.”said Sharada

“We will not rest until the security of our campaign and supporters is guaranteed. The security agencies must act now to protect the rights of all citizens to engage in peaceful political activity,’’ the statement said.

Niger Govt applauds GIZ - SEDIN for impacting on state activities

Niger state government have commended the GIZ - SEDIN for its activities in the state which has tremendously impacted positively in various sectors of development and the lives of the people in the state.

The Secretary to the State Government, SSG, Alhaji Ahmed Ibrahim Matane made the declaration during a one day validation workshop on the State NSME Policy and Strategic Implementation Plan held in Minna.

Micro Finance Agency with Support from PRO Poor Growth and Promotion of Employment in Nigeria Programme (GIZ -SEDIN).

Ibrahim Matane said validation policy plan implementation especially as it concerned SMEs is crucial and will go a long way in addressing socio economic development of the state.

The Niger state Coordinator of GIZ, Bello Dantoro stated that the idea of policy validation is to domesticate SMEs policy to enhance private sector development in the state to boost the economy devoid of depending on the federal statutory allocation.

Niger State All Progressives Congress (APC), has reiterated the commitment of its stakeholders in ensuring the victory of the party and their candidates at all levels during the forthcoming general elections in the state.

The Director General Bago/ Yakubu of All Progressives Congress APC governorship, Isah Sidi Rijau said that the essence of the retreat was to brainstorm to come up with harmonious resolutions for a successful campaign and elections.

He made this known in an interview during a 2 Day retreat for Bago and Yakubu gubernatorial campaign for the directors, their deputies, secretaries and other members of the campaign Council in Minna.

Sidi Rijau maintained that the major political party, the PDP in the state is never in anyway a threat to their victory but they needed the inputs of all the directorates so as to have a united front.

The Chairman of the occasion and APC elder, Major General Abdullahi Garba (rtd) said that the essence of the retreat is part of activities lined up towards the success of the party and its governorship candidate Umar Mohammed Bago.

The National Universities Commission, NUC, has directed that all Universities and Inter University Centres be shut down and academic activities should be suspended between 22nd February and 14th March, 2023.

In a letter signed by the Deputy Executive Secretary

(Administration), Dr. Chris Maiyaki, reads that, “as ViceChancellors of all Universities and Directors/ Chief Executive of Inter University Centres are quite aware, the 2023 General Elections have been scheduled to hold on Saturday 25 February 2023, for the Presidential and National Assembly, and Saturday 11 March 2023 for Gubernatorial and State
