Ex-Buhari’s aide, Kawu Sumaila ends Kabiru Gaya’s 16-year reign in Senate

Former Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on National Assembly Matters, Abdulrahman Sulaiman Kawu Sumaila has unseated Senator Ibrahim Kabiru Gaya as senator for Kano south.

Gaya had spent 16 years in Senate, one of the longest serving senators in the red chamber.

The INEC ‘s Returning Officer, Professor Ibrahim N. Barde announced the results that declared Kawu Sumaila as the winner.

Professor Barde declared that

“Abdurrahman Kawu Sumaila, NNPP, 319,857 having certified requirements of the law has been declared the Winner and is returned elected.”

The development has brought to an end the 16-year of Senator Gaya in the Senate.

The former governor of Kano state, Senator Gaya was elected governor in 1992 and elected senator in 2007. Until the recent defeat, Senator Gaya has been in the Red Chamber.

Kano south comprises of 16 Local Government Areas.

Total Accredited votes –556471.

APC – 192,518 (Kabiru Ibrahim Gaya)

LP – 2,875 (Umar Darki) NNPP – 319,857 (Abdurrahman Kawu Sumaila)

PDP – 14,880 (Galadanci Murtala Bashir).

Total valid votes – 538780

Rejected votes – 11060

Total votes cast – 549840
