The Historical Society Museum on Clarence Street Port Macquarie will take you on a journey from the Birpai people, British settlement in 1821 through to our contemporary history as a tourist and sea change town. Major Archibald Clunes Innes (1799-1857) predicted that Port Macquarie would become a major coastal gateway and he became one of Australia’s richest colonists. See the ruins of the house he built with convict labour at Lake Innes Ruins. Guided tours are the only way to access the ruins and can be booked through the Visitor Information Centre. Past Dunbogan on the headland you will find Camden Head Pilot Station which provided navigation assistance from 1890 until its closure in 1990. It is a unique venue for holiday accommodation, artist and writer residencies as well as community, environmental, educational and cultural events. In the village of Kendall, the Heritage Walk takes in 16 heritage sites and is a comfortable walk around the village. Try the Poet’s Walk which reveals poetry by Henry Kendall and a number of modern-day Kendall residents along the way. 22

The Historic Courthouse in Port Macquarie (1869) was designed by Colonial Architect James Barnet and served the community for 117 years. The former Pilot’s Boat Shed has maritime displays including a copy of Matthew Flinders’ journal entry, recorded as he sailed past Tacking Point in 1802. Visit Australia’s third oldest lighthouse at Tacking Point overlooking Lighthouse Beach. You might even spot a dolphin or whale from the headland. Take a drive across the Kindee Suspension Bridge, which is the oldest suspension bridge in Australia. Built in 1836 it provides access across the Ellenborough River. Roto House is one of the oldest buildings in Port Macquarie and a beautiful example of Victorian architecture and craftsmanship. Lighthouse beach is the summer saviour with protection from the summer north easterlies. The beach faces south and picks up all available swell so it’s great for the intermediate surfer and above, with short powerful rides. However the beach can be dangerous and strong rips and currents occur. Lighthouse beach is best in north west to north east winds with waves under 2 metres, yet has been surfed in the 3m+ size. Being a beach break it is entirely dependent on the sandbanks. DO
