With so much history and heritage on offer where to start? Easy...head to the heritage precinct to visit the Port Macquarie Museum and Visitor Information Centre in the Glasshouse. Both provide information on the region’s heritage offerings, including guided walks, vineyards, heritage sites, churches and ruins.
The first inhabitants o the region were the Birpai People (Biripi Nation) who had an intimate knowledge of their country; a rich and abundant area of open forests and grasslands with pockets of thick eucalypt and rainforest.

ST. THOMAS’ ANGLICAN CHURCH The oldest church outside Sydney built by convict labour. Take a moment to sit in a pew like the earliest settlers did. PORT MACQUARIE MUSEUM Will take you on a journey from the Birpai people, British settlement in 1821 through to our contemporary history as a tourist and sea change town. ROTO HOUSE One of the oldest buildings in Port Macquarie and a beautiful example of Victorian architecture and craftsmanship.

THE GLASSHOUSE Sited on a historically significant pa cel of land in the CBD associated with cottages of free Convict Overseers, the first ouncil Chambers and School of Arts buildings. See artefacts and archaeological remains uncovered during the excavation and now displayed with interpretation. Did you know Port Macquarie was once a penal settlement? In 1821 Port Macquarie was founded as a penal settlement for convicts who had committed secondary crimes in New South Wales. By October 1821, there were 92 convicts at Port Macquarie. Some of the settlement’s buildings still survive today.

OXLEY BEACH A short distance from Port Macquarie’s CBD and part of the coastal walk offering tracks to nearby lookouts. A less crowded beach with picturesque picnic facilities and views, it’s a beach of choice when looking for some extra space and solitude.
NORTH BEACH On the North Shore is a secluded, open beach accessible via river ferry from Port Macquarie’s Settlement Point to the North Shore. The beach can be accessed at Queens Head where there is a car park and picnic area providing an excellent view south along the beach. Popular for 4WD driving and beach fishing
SHELLY BEACH With a natural tidal lagoon, a long stretch of white sandy beach and surrounded by spectacular rainforests, you are guaranteed to find yoursel the perfect spot to relax at one with nature.
WASH HOUSE BEACH South of Pilot Beach in the Camden Haven, this beach offers nature lovers the perfect opportunity to explore and discover rock pools and majestic birdlife such as soaring sea eagles.

FLYNNS BEACH One of the iconic beaches of Port Macquarie and ticks all the boxes to please all the family. With a patrolled beach, shaded picnic areas, plenty of space to set up for the day under the big pine trees and a friendly kiosk serving up all your favourites.It’s sure to become one of your favourite beaches too!
LIGHTHOUSE BEACH Known as the summer saviour with protection from the north easterlies, the beach faces south and picks up all available swell so it’s great for the intermediate surfer and above, with short powerful rides. Care must be taken however as it can be dangerous and strong rips and currents occur. Conditions are ideal when there are north west to north east winds with waves under 2 metres. RAINBOW BEACH Situated at Bonny Hills is at its best with an east or south swell of up to 3 metres and winds west to south west. The beach offers a variety of breaks from the typical beach breaks to point breaks. 43

BY CAR It is an easy 4 hour drive from Sydney and less than 3 hours from Newcastle. From Brisbane it is a 6 hour drive South. From the West it’s less than 4 hours from Armidale and Tamworth. BY AIR QantasLink and Virgin Australia provide direct daily flights f om Sydney, a daily direct service from Brisbane with Virgin Australia, and smooth connections from intrastate and interstate flights
BY BUS Busway Buses operate between the Port Macquarie CBD, shopping centres and beaches. Also around the region between the townships of Port Macquarie and Wauchope and Port Macquarie, Laurieton and Kendall. Some entertainment venues offer courtesy buses. BY FERRY Port Macquarie is serviced by two vehicle ferries across the Hastings River linking the CBD to the North Shore, providing access to Limeburners Creek Nature Reserve, North Beach and Crescent Head via Maria River Road (unsealed road) and Point Plomer Road (4WD access only). The Settlement Point ferry operates between Settlement Point Road and North Shore Drive. The Hibbard ferry operates between Boundary Street and Riverside Drive.
BY RAIL The XPT train service between Sydney and Brisbane stops at Wauchope 3 times a day with a coach connection between Wauchope and Port Macquarie on some services. BY COACH Greyhound Australia and Premier Motor Service both service the area. PORT MACQUARIE AIRPORT Less than a 10 minute drive from the CBD.
