uba is on the edge of change. The island seems frozen in time, abandoned from the rest of the world. But their political and economical situation is changing, slowly catching up the lost time.

This project sees the deterioration as an opportunity for improvement of the city. The design is a showcase how empty places can foster development for its surroundings and make the neighbourhood liveable again.

The country dilapidated heavily since the fall of the Soviet Union and is still dealing with many problems. The neighbourhood Centro Havana is in the worst state of the capital. The neighbourhood has the highest density, without any public space. The buildings are deteriorated and it is not uncommon that a building collapses. Unfortunately there is no money for maintenance and empty spaces are redeveloped for tourism.

The country is facing the same health issues as western countries, with problems such as a rising diabetes rate and an ageing population. But Cuba has an extraordinary healthcare system which is an example for the world. Their system focusses on prevention rather than treatment. For instance, in Cuba they have an annually check-up at the doctor. But this approach is becoming more important all over the world. Being

healthy is much more than simply the fact of not being ill nowadays. This graduation project enhances the current Cuban prevention in healthcare and implements new findings of the western world. It creates a place of public healthcare for the inhabitants of Havana, but also improves the current condition of the built environment. It is a showcase how beautiful Cuban buildings can be maintained and emptiness preserved. Therefore it is a healthcare project for the city as for the people.

The project creates a gateway for Centro Havana. It is a symbolical medical stent keeping the space open, connecting Centro Havana physically with the sea. The gate is iconic while serving a social function of healthcare, ‘a monument for the world famous Cuban healthcare’. But besides the fact that a gate is an iconic typology, it is intrinsically secondary. A gate creates or keeps a space open to serve what lays beyond. It serves the surrounding space, acknowledging and emphasizing the importance of the space beyond. The gate is placed against blind façades of the existing buildings, reorientating the existing buildings. It creates a public interior, representing community and equality. These are the key points of the revolution, which are in these changing times needed harder then ever.

It is designed as a strong and solid gesture to symbolize stability. Furthermore, the dimensions of the gate enhances the transition of inand outside, and creates usable space within the mass off the columns.

Iceland trekking cabin

Competition Iceland 2016 Collaboration P. canisius S. van Beijsterveldt D. Hammink

he landscape of Iceland has a surreal beauty. The harsh landscape, created by the forces of nature, generates an experience out of this world. The trekking hut is a beacon in this vast landscape, a place of safety and comfort. The tower forms an unexpected typology, enhancing the surrealistic and mythical experience of the island. The exterior has a modern and futuristic look, while the interior is

warm and comfortable. A 120 degrees shift of split level floors form one shared space, while generating privacy and personal space. The circular movement through the building enables 360 degrees framing of the surroundings and amplifies the experience of a tower overlooking the landscape.

he experience and social role plays an important part in the design. It is a place where the city and exhibition space meet. The ground floor is an extension of the park and a transition towards the exhibition spaces on the first floor. The building connects the new social role with the experience of art by lowering the threshold. While the existing Kunsthal, designed by Rem Koolhaas, is an expression of a confused society. Is the new design a contribution to society rather than a reflection on it.

During my studies I founded â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Mudde Madeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; whereby I independently designed, from assignment until completion, several projects.

Garden room The garden room creates a space in the garden where the boundaries of in- and outside intertwine. It is a pleasant space all year long with a large roof that protects you from the sun and rain. The slanted oak wooden columns are in dialogue with the trees in the garden and creates, together with the slightly cantilevered roof, a sense of lightness. The structure is supported by two steal beams and a steal column to keep the dimensions in harmony.

Office space In a small village, close to the capital of Havana forms this office the workspace of a development aid consultant. It is a design based on local building habits and materials to keep the design straightforward with a style that suits its surroundings. The plan consists out of two trapezium shaped spaces, opening up towards a magnificent view. The trapezium shape creates an efficient floor surface and naturally creates an upwards gradient in the roof towards the view. The owner plans to rent out his office in the future as two guest studios or a dwelling. Therefore the office is designed with two other functions in mind so it is easy to transform in the future.

Holiday home The Reeuwijkse Plassen is a beautiful area of several connected lakes in the southwest of the Netherlands. Family Leo owned a small island with a holiday home which was too small and old. They asked me to design several options to show the possibilities for a new holiday home. Because the Reeuwijkse Plassen is a nature area, there were a lot of restrictions for the design. The main requirements were a maximum volume of 165 m3 and ground floor surface area of 40m2 plus a slanted roof. I designed four, very different, holiday homes, according to the restrictions and their wishes. They were very enthusiastic about the plans and decided to continue with one design, which I worked out further in collaboration with a constructor. But unfortunately the project got on hold because of changes in the building rules of the municipality.
