Rom. 2:1-11 Rom 2:1 Διὸ ἀναπολόγητος εἶ, ὦ ἄνθρωπε πᾶς ὁ κρίνων· ἐν ᾧ γὰρ κρίνεις τὸν ἕτερον, σεαυτὸν κατακρίνεις, τὰ γὰρ αὐτὰ πράσσεις ὁ κρίνων. 2 οἴδαµεν δὲ ὅτι τὸ κρίµα τοῦ θεοῦ ἐστιν κατὰ ἀλήθειαν ἐπὶ τοὺς τὰ τοιαῦτα πράσσοντας . 3 λογίζῃ δὲ τοῦτο, ὦ ἄνθρωπε ὁ κρίνων τοὺς τὰ τοιαῦτα πράσσοντας καὶ ποιῶν αὐτά, ὅτι σὺ ἐκφεύξῃ τὸ κρίµα τοῦ θεοῦ; 4 ἢ τοῦ πλούτου τῆς χρηστότητος αὐτοῦ καὶ τῆς ἀνοχῆς καὶ τῆς µακροθυµίας καταφρονεῖς, ἀγνοῶν ὅτι τὸ χρηστὸν τοῦ θεοῦ εἰς µετάνοιάν σε ἄγει; 5 κατὰ δὲ τὴν σκληρότητά σου καὶ ἀµετανόητον καρδίαν θησαυρίζεις σεαυτῷ ὀργὴν ἐν ἡµέρᾳ ὀργῆς καὶ ἀποκαλύψεως δικαιοκρισίας τοῦ θεοῦ
6 ὃς ἀποδώσει ἑκάστῳ κατὰ τὰ ἔργα αὐτοῦ· 7 τοῖς µὲν καθ᾿ ὑποµονὴν ἔργου ἀγαθοῦ δόξαν καὶ τιµὴν καὶ ἀφθαρσίαν ζητοῦσιν ζωὴν αἰώνιον, 8 τοῖς δὲ ἐξ ἐριθείας καὶ ἀπειθοῦσι τῇ ἀληθείᾳ πειθοµένοις δὲ τῇ ἀδικίᾳ ὀργὴ καὶ θυµός . 9 θλῖψις καὶ στενοχωρία ἐπὶ πᾶσαν ψυχὴν ἀνθρώπου τοῦ κατεργαζοµένου τὸ κακόν, Ἰουδαίου τε πρῶτον καὶ Ἕλληνος· 10 δόξα δὲ καὶ τιµὴ καὶ εἰρήνη παντὶ τῷ ἐργαζοµένῳ τὸ ἀγαθόν, Ἰουδαίῳ τε πρῶτον καὶ Ἕλληνι· 11 οὐ γάρ ἐστιν προσωποληµψία παρὰ τῷ θεῷ.
Rom. 2:1 On which account we are without defense, oh friend!1 all who judges; for under which you judge the other, you condemn yourself,2 you who judge practice the same things.3 2 And we know that the judgment of the god is in quest of truth on those who practice such things. 3 Do you consider this, oh friend who judge those who practice such things and who do the same,4 that you will escape the judgment of the god? 4 Do you despise of riches of his kindness and of forbearance and of longsuffering, not knowing that the kindness of the god leads you into change of mind? 5 But according to your hardness and unchanging [mind of] heart, you store up warth to yourself5 in day of warth and of revelation of just-judgment of the god6 6 who will render to each according to the works of him;7 7 on the one hand, to those who seek glory and honor and incorruptibility according to endurance of good work, [the god will render] eternal life, 8 on the other hand, to those who even disobey to the truth out of strife and who are misled to the injustice, [there are] passion (or wrath) and breath8. 9 [There are] affliction and narrowness of space on all breath9 of man who gains the bad by labor,10 both of Jew previously and of Greek; 10 but glory and honor and peace to all who works the good, both to Jew previously and to Greek. 11 For there is no respect of persons before the god.

ἄνθρωπε vocative of man. not the god. 3 See Q 6:37 // Mt 7:1-2 for the same argument. Μὴ κρίνετε, ἵνα µὴ κριθῆτε· 4 This is the same thing that Paul emphasizes in Galatians 2:14, where he reprimanded Peter for not practicing a Jewish law himself while asking others to follow. 5 Paul avoids saying that it is the god who judges, but oneself. 6 God does not actively involve in judgment. The judgment befalls on each one as a result of each one’s seeking. 7 See Matt. 16:27 for a variegated use of it. Mt replaced ἔργον with πρᾶξις, which might be evidence of anti-Pauline stance. Even though ἔργον coupled with the law carries negative connotation for Paul, but as it is shown here, it does not do so. 8 ὀργὴ καὶ θυµός (passion or wrath and breath) is in contrast with ζωὴν αἰώνιον. ὀργὴ may not be rendered as “wrath.” || One thing that should be noticed here is the fact that cases of nouns are different, nominative and accusative. The “eternal life” in accusative is rendered by god while “passion and breath” in nominative does not require the god as a giver of action, as if one stores up wrath for oneself through the works of the bad. 9 θυµός is replaced with ψυχή. Paul avoids using πνεῦµα for the same role. 10 His argument is again based on Gal 2:16. The natural consequence of the works of the law results in the gain of the bad. 2
