Hello Division 21 Bumblebees! I hope you all had a healthy recovery from Post DCON Syndrome! It still blows my mind that DCON 2014 was already one month ago! Summer Rallies & joint DCMs are great opportunities for you all to reconnect with your DCON friends and meet new people from all over the Pacific Northwest District of Key Club! Time will pass by faster than you expect so make sure you are actively involved with your clubs and the division to make the most of your time in Key Club, the best club ever! Thank you to everyone who showed up to my first DCM and PCM in April! I had a great time getting to know all of you better and I hope that you will choose to get to know me better through future DCMs or any communication method you choose! Remember that I am always at your disposal so please don’t hesitate to ask me any questions you may have! I am here to serve YOU. Also, thank you Kiwanians for helping me make a smooth transition into my term! Let me know if you ever need anything! With Love & Service,

MNT is Maternal Neonatal Tetanus. MNT is caused when tetanus spores, found in soil everywhere, come into contact with open cuts during childbirth. The disease strikes the poorest of the poor, the geographically hard to reach and those without health care.

With The Eliminate Project, Kiwanis International and UNICEF have joined forces to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus. This deadly disease steals the lives of nearly 60,000 innocent babies and a significant number of women each year. The effects of the disease are excruciating — tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch.

jackson

“The three biggest events for this month include Kiwanis One Day, the Mill Creek Carnival and the JHS Car Wash! Kiwanis One Day Project - We shoveled and wheel burrowed gravel for 3 hours straight but the hard work paid off because we were able to finish the ramp for the disabled with our Kiwanis!

Mill Creek Carnival - It was raining and cold but it was also fun! We had a huge turn out and helped raised a few hundred dollars. Car Wash – It was our first fundraiser this year and we raised $462.00 in 4 hours!” ~ Emily Heng, President of Jackson High School Key Club

kamiak “We had our Kiwanis One Day on April 19th. It was a ton of fun! Kamiak and Mariner Key Clubbers spent the morning gardening at the Mukilteo Community Garden. It started raining and the bugs were scary, but it was fine because Key Club and Kiwanis got to bond while doing something super fun. It was especially great for the officers, who got to spend time with Key Club members and teach them the Key Club chant. We can't wait until next year!” ~ Simran Handa, Co-President of Kamiak High School Key Club

“Lynnwood Key Club’s recent events evolved around helping to provide a healthy life for children. On April 26th, 2014, Lynnwood Key Club volunteered with the Northshore YMCA’s Annual Healthy Kids Day event for the second year in a row! Half of the club contributed a total of over 130 hours of service with the YMCA. On the same day, seven other members also dedicated 36 hours for March of Dimes - March for Babies event. Four members also assisted with the March for Babies at the Seattle Center on May 3, 2014. I am so proud of the accomplishments of my club! SPOT Hello Division 21 Bumblebees! This month’s club spotlight goes to…

JACKSON HIGH SCHOOL KEY CLUB!

“Jackson High School Key Club’s April highlights are our Kiwanis One Day Project, Mill Creek Carnival, and our first fundraiser this year. Our Kiwanis One Day event was a lot of work this year but we were able to build a ramp for the disabled along the south side of Silverlake in a little over 3 hours. The Mill Creek Carnival was also huge success! We helped the PTA raise a few hundred dollars! Our car wash was also a huge success as we raised $462.00 in 4 hours!” ~ Emily Heng, President of Jackson Key Club “Jackson Key Club deserved this month’s Club Spotlight because they are actively doing service in their community! Within a couple weeks, they were able to double the amount of events they had each month! What an accomplishment! Jackson Key Club also has a very high membership and has maintained a close relationship with their Kiwanis as well. The new officers are very eager to bring their club to new heights this year and are very easy to communicate with. I would also like to thank Jackson Key Club for being active in divisional activities! Even though they were not able to attend DCON 2014, they still showed up to the Pre-DCON Rally and have already taken steps to ensure their attendance for DCON 2015. Not only that, but also back in January, Jackson Key Club helped assist Lynnwood Key Club with their first winter rummage sale for Clothes For Kids! I look forward to seeing the future service projects Jackson Key Club plans to do next year with the other schools in the division!” ~ Selina Nguyen, PNW Lieutenant Governor of Division 21 Key Club

Before I joined Key Club I was really awkward, didn't have that many friends and I had a hard time talking to new people. However through Key Club, I was able to grow more as a person, be able to open up more and talk to new people and just become a better person overall. The people inside of Key Club have also made a huge impact on life. The closest friends that I have made throughout my high school years have all been a part of Key Club. When I look back on my high school years, most of the things that I will recall as being the highlights of my time in high school are all associated with Key Club, or the friends that I have met through a part of Key Club. Now a junior, going on senior I am the Vice-President of my Key Club, president of another club and currently running for another officer position for another club. I would never have thought about running for an officer position anywhere if it weren't for the people and experiences I've had through Key Club and Key Club is what gave me the motivation to go out and join other clubs. I would like to thank my fellow Key Clubbers for pushing me to actually sign up for my first Key Club event, the event that I didn't know would be so much fun and would change the course of my high school life.” ~ Bryan Raganot, Vice President of Kent Meridian High School Key Club

“When I was in middle school, I was in Builder's Club and I was also the secretary. But no one really cared about the club, not even the president. And no one knew what

23

Builder’s Club was. We did have a Kiwanis Adviser though, and one day, she came to our little meeting and offered the "officers" the opportunity to go to the leadership camp. And out of four of us, I was chosen to go. This Leadership Camp was called a Key Leader Weekend and this was the first time I had ever heard of Key Club. When I arrived at this camp, I knew no one and I was the youngest attendee; I was only in 8th grade and everyone else was in high school. I was really shy and so I was absolutely terrified. But once I was there, these "scary" high school students weren't that scary. The very first thing the Key Clubbers taught me was the Key Club Cheer and I thought they looked ridiculous. But then they let me into their groups and showed me leadership and how to truly care about people and that service to others is so important. Then I didn't feel so silly doing the cheer and that was when I realized that I wanted to be just like them, dedicated to leading and serving. Those are the people who motivated me to, not only join Key Club, but also to run for District Editor and to become President of my own club.” ~ Marissa Perez, Co-President of Kamiak High School Key Club

“I'm a junior at Mount Si High School, and this is my third year of being a Key Clubber. I've been a member, then Vice President, and now webmaster. My overall experience? It's been a blast. Whether I was a member or officer, I've really learned a lot about myself regarding working with others, organization, being up to date with the latest events and divisional deets, meeting new people, and maintaining a level of professionalism and order in stressful times of turmoil. I love Key Club not solely because of the service, but the spirit and energy of its members. In my school, the most spirit you'd find would be at football games. It's always an eye opener to see how passionate and hyped up people get over Key Club. I've met such a diverse group of individuals that I would've never found in my school, and from these crazy, lovable humans, I've learned to embrace who I am and what I am passionate about. In my school, there's an unseen pressure to conform and blend in with everyone else: dress, hair, sports, speech. Key Club has made me love how weird and geeky I am. I've gone from being a girl who gives in and is submissive to being a girl who's not afraid of stating her opinions in a confident, independent manner, and not caring what anyone thinks of that.” ~ Natasha Ng, Webmaster of Newport High School Key Club
