Greetings from the Lt. Governor GREETINGS! Hey Beastly Butterflies! Now is the time to begin attracting new members to your clubs! Keep in mind, the final date to add a member is December 1st so if you haven’t already, begin showering your school in all things Key Club! In the following months, most schools will have the opportunity to host a DCM at their school to get their members acquainted with the Divisional aspect of Key Club. Fundraisers for our District project will be in the near future so keep your eyes peeled for that! The first few months of Key Club can get a little hectic, so if at anytime you need assistance on your positions or have any questions you can always contact me!

Monthly Goals As we roll into the month of October, it’s time to get our Trick or Treat for UNICEF on! Our Divisional goal will be to raise at least $500 total for this cause. As you begin to host fundraisers for your various schools, consider donating a portion of those funds to our District Project, KCCP! As a bonus, your clubs can also start brainstorming a goals list together of items you would like to accomplish before the year ends. If you are an officer or a member, set some individual goals for yourself and check them off as you move throughout the year. In Care and Service, Alyssa Libak

There will also be exciting Halloween themed icebreakers to allow all of us to get to know each other better!

Trick or Treat for UNICEF “Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF is one of the most important fundraisers of the year! It’s the perfect opportunity for your Key Club to make a difference in the lives of women and babies around the world as we work together to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus. For less than the cost of a bag of Halloween candy, you can help provide a series of three doses of vaccine, which protects a mother and her future newborns.” For more information visit: http://keyclub.org/kcn/16-0918/Trick-or-Treat_for_UNICEF_FAQ.aspx

KEY CLUB & KIWANIS: A POWERFUL TEAM The unique service partnership between Key Clubs and Kiwanis has existed for over 90 years. Although Key Club is a student-led organization, each of the thirteen local Key Clubs is sponsored by one of the five local Kiwanis Clubs. As sponsors, Kiwanians assist with chartering new clubs, provide Kiwanis Advisors, and frequently offer financial support for students to attend District Convention (DCON) and Key Leader. At Key Club meetings, it is helpful to introduce Kiwanis Advisors to members and share that they are there to support your Key Club and sometimes offer important background information on service initiatives. Our shared love of service unites Key Club and Kiwanis members with powerful results. Last year, the PNW Key Club District raised over $79,000 for Project Eliminate. Local Kiwanis Clubs have been working for the past five years in the international Kiwanis effort to raise $110 million to eliminate maternal and neo-natal tetanus. Skyview Key Club received national recognition at DCON for their Salvation Army bell-ringing efforts. In partnership with ITech Prep Key Club and Salmon Creek Kiwanis, they raised over $14,000. Both Skyview and ITech Prep Key Clubs often volunteer at the annual concerts sponsored by Salmon Creek. Mountain View Key Club teams, assisted by several Cascade Park Kiwanis members, volunteer every year for two days at the Portland Marathon. Prairie and Hockinson Key Clubs provide readers for the Battle Ground Kiwanis Dr. Seuss event. Cascade Park Kiwanians deeply appreciate the contributions of the HeLa, Mountain View, Camas, Union, and Evergreen Key Clubs on numerous projects including baby food drives, foster children’s parties, our garage sale, and the Fall Festival of Service. The possibilities for joint service projects are endless. Explore additional ways in which your sponsoring Kiwanis Clubs can assist with your service projects. If you are hosting a car wash or fundraiser at a local restaurant, notify your Kiwanis Advisor so that they can support these events. Visit a Kiwanis meeting where Key Club members often receive a free meal while they learn more about Kiwanis. Several local Kiwanis Clubs offer scholarships. Additional benefits are that Kiwanis members may be able to provide insights on professional careers and write letters of recommendation for college applicants. We truly are K-Family, and strengthening our partnership in service enables all of us to better serve the children of our world.

Distinguished Member Melissa Hernandez is the first person that comes to mind as someone who is extremely committed and passionate about Key Club. Every time we announce an event or DCM or even rally, she is always willing to spend her time and help out. When I ask her if she's able to do something for Key club she never refuses and has a smile on her face while doing it. We are extremely proud of her as a club because even with having to juggle running start and her busy schedule she attends all our meetings no matter what it takes. She always shows excitement towards everything key club related and it amazes me every time. We are extremely thankful to have such an honorable member in our group. Every Key Club needs a Melissa!
