Kiwanis eliminating maternal/neonatal tetanus
10
The Kiwanis family is making history through The Eliminate Project! Since Kiwanis International joined UNICEF in the fight to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus, infant mortality rates have dropped significantly. And since 2011, more than 15 countries have eliminated MNT. Because of Kiwanis, vaccines are reaching the women who need them—those in the world’s poorest and most remote regions—saving millions of lives. While we celebrate our great progress, the work must continue. Babies are still dying—134 newborns every day. Millions of women and babies need our support. Together, we will eliminate this disease.
Important facts about the fight • 1 baby dies every 11 minutes from tetanus • 134 newborns die every day from tetanus • Between 2010 and 2013, neonatal tetanus deaths decreased by more than 15 percent—25 fewer babies die each day
• MNT has been eliminated from more than 35 countries since 2000 • A series of 3 doses of the tetanus vaccine = immunity from tetanus • Women + vaccine = protected baby • US$1.80 protects one woman and her future babies

Preferred Charities UNICEF works with the United Nations to help over 150 developing countries to overcome the obstacles that poverty, violence, disease and discrimination place in a child’s path. Through community service, UNICEF is able to provide healthcare, sanitary water, and education for these children.
1 in 9 babies in America are born mature. The United States has one of the highest rates for premature babies for more developed countries. The March of Dimes funds lifesaving research and programs and works to end premature birth, birth defects and infant mortality. Every baby deserves a healthy life.
Children’s Miracle Network seeks to battle every type of childhood illness and injury. The money fundraised for the program goes towards research and training, purchasing equipment and paying uncompensated care, in its mission to save as many children’s lives as possible.
