In the news Trump endorses Dunleavy for Alaska governor via tweet JUNEAU — President Donald Trump has taken to Twitter to endorse Republican Mike Dunleavy in the Alaska governor’s race. The endorsement was among a smattering of endorsements Trump posted Thursday, hours before Dunleavy was scheduled to participate in a broadcast debate against Democrat Mark Begich. At a forum last month, the men were asked to rate Trump’s job performance on a scale of zero to 10, with 10 the highest. Begich said “four minus.” Dunleavy said eight. The governor’s race was shaken up last week when Gov. Bill Walker said he could not win against Begich and Dunleavy and ended his campaign. The announcement came days after Walker’s lieutenant governor and close friend, Byron Mallott, resigned over unspecified inappropriate comments. Walker, an independent, said Begich would be better for Alaska than Dunleavy.
Ted Stevens airport sees new high in summer passengers ANCHORAGE — Summer passenger traffic set an alltime high in 2018 at Alaska’s largest airport. Officials at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport say 1.53 million passengers embarked on flights from May through September. That was an increase of 68,724 passengers, a nearly 4.5 percent jump over 2017 summer traffic of 1.46 million embarking passengers, airport manager Jim Szczesniak said Thursday. It also exceeded the previous recorded high in summer 2016.
Correction Clarification has been added to Thursday’s story regarding invocations at Tuesday’s Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly meeting to make more it more clear that the borough lost a lawsuit against the American Civil Liberties Union of Alaska in a fight over its invocation policy, which allows certain groups and individuals to offer an invocation at the beginning of each meeting. The article previously stated the borough lost in a fight over the right to give invocations. We apologize the error.

the laughter so omnipresent, that when it came to the actual script, it was hard to keep track of what’s in or out. Kind of like the Alaska governor’s race, and that’s why “Lame Ducks and Dark Horses” is probably better equipped than any of the Alaska political institutions to handle the late October departure from the race by Gov. Bill Walker. Starting Friday and Saturday, Triumvirate Theatre’s production of “Lame Ducks and Dark Horses” is back for its sixth go-around. The show happens every two years and features impersonations of local, state and national political figures, and even some actual Hannah Tauriainen and Tyler Payment, seated and in yellow, and Brian Lyke and Chris Pepper politicians in the flesh from enact a Star Trek spoof Monday during rehearsals for “Lame Ducks and Dark Horses” at TriumSee DUCKS, page A2 virate North, five miles north of Kenai. Women in Agriculture Conference comes to the Kenai By VICTORIA PETERSEN Peninsula Clarion
The Women in Agriculture Conference will be coming to the peninsula for its second year this weekend. The one-day virtual gathering for anyone interested in the farming and agriculture industry will take place in Soldotna, Fairbanks, Delta Junction and Palmer. The event will include 34 video conference sites across Alaska and in Montana, Oregon, Idaho and Washington. This year’s theme is “pump up your financial fitness.” Heidi Chay is the local coordinator for the central peninsula. She said the conference highlights some of the special
contributions women are offering the agriculture industry, but is open to anyone who is interested in farming, no matter what the gender. “In many parts of the country where there’s rapid growth in new farms, young women are often in the lead,” Chay said. “We’re seeing women retiring from their jobs to go into farming.” The program will be hosted by the Kenai Soil and Water Conservation District and will feature both virtual and local presentations, beginning at 7:30 a.m. and ending around 3 p.m. at the Kenai River Center in Soldotna. Virtual presentations will be See FARM, page A6

Soldotna City Council Redoubt ranked among list of ‘very high threat’ volcanoes changes Kleeb to Whistle Hill Loop
By SETH BORENSTEIN AP Science Writer
WASHINGTON — Government scientists have classified 18 U.S. volcanoes as “very high threat” because of what’s been happening inside them and how close they are to people. The U.S. Geological Survey has updated its volcano threat assessments for the first time since 2005. The danger list is topped by Hawaii’s Kilauea, which has See HIGH, page A3

The Soldotna City Council voted to rename Kleeb Loop to Whistle Hill Loop. Mary Krull is the owner of Brew@602, a train-carturned-coffee-shop, which sits on top of the hill along the former Kleeb Loop in Soldotna. The hill, which is a commercial complex, is also now home to a hydroponic farm, Fresh 365, and the fu-
ture Addie Camp Train Car Eatery and Wine Bar. Krull said she is thrilled to death with the council’s decision to approve the name change. “It was really a safety issue,” Krull said. “People were confused how to get to the hill when they saw our new sign put up.” Krull said she and the city researched the history of the Kleeb name but found no history on it.

time to time, including a U.S. senator. Of the cast of 14, 13 return from previous shows. That has Triumvirate’s Joe Rizzo thinking that Walker’s withdrawal will make the show better, not worse. Yes, Walker’s picture is affixed to promotional posters for the event, but cast member and ace graphic designer Chris Jenness was already on that Saturday, affixing a “Warning: Jokes subject to change without notice” sticker on the poster on the theater’s Facebook page. Rizzo said there is a Jay Leno vs. David Letterman way of handling an October surprise. While Leno’s skits tended to founder after encountering the unexpected, Letterman had a way of taking a similar situation to new comic heights. “That’s kind of what I expect to happen with this group,” Rizzo said. “It’s not a problem to make things up on the spot.” A week is a luxury. Rizzo said that past shows have morphed depending on which political figures are in the audience. One year, Sen. Lisa Murkowski made a last-minute appearance. The script has Rizzo and Jenness, as Tom and Ray Magliozzi of “Car Talk,”

wondering about the term RINO. Jenness said he thought the term meant Republican In Name Only, but Rizzo thought it came because Murkowski horned her way into the Senate seat of her father, Frank. “Are we OK here?” Rizzo quickly ad libbed, motioning toward Murkowski. “We might need federal funding to fix the parking lot. You never know.” While state politics is in a bit of a flux, President Donald Trump is still solidly ensconced in the White House. That means the return of Tyler Payment as Trump. Payment, a 2007 graduate of Nikiski High School, has been involved in Triumvirate since his prep days. But 2016 was his first “Lake Ducks and Dark Horses,” and his Trump created somewhat of a sensation. Payment, an engineer in life off the stage, said he was on a job site when someone said, “I know you from somewhere. Oh my god, you’re the guy that plays Trump.” Rizzo said “Lame Ducks and Dark Horses” balances the fact that the sitting president must be lampooned, but also that most have Trump fatigue at this point. That being said, a Trumpdriven Star Trek spoof and parody of Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’” won’t have Payment’s star diminishing anytime soon. “I want to get a Tweet from him, ‘Went to the Trump play.

Not very good. Guy who plays Trump is kind of fat. Kind of a loser,’” Payment said. In all seriousness, Payment said what makes his Trump work is that the skits are not mean and they are not pushing a political agenda. “Nothing is ever mean in these shows,” Payment said. “What it is, is, ‘Let’s laugh.’ Everybody should be able to laugh at everybody in these shows.” Rizzo agrees, saying humor, and not any ideology, always rules in the show. “These shows get everybody together laughing,” Payment said. “It gives people an outlet. It may get them thinking about the election but we’re all just here having fun.” In that vein, “Lame Ducks and Dark Horses” is bringing back the John McCain and Sarah Palin press conference rag, a parody of a popular number in the musical “Chicago.” The 2008 skit was dusted off not only because it was popular at the time, but also to honor the deceased Arizona senator, and a different era. At least from the perspective of a writer for community theater, Rizzo said the second “Lame Ducks and Dark Horses” was much easier to write than the sixth because of the current degree of polarization. “At the time of that election, we were more civil to one another,” Rizzo said. “People weren’t so mean, especially about politics, and

everything wasn’t so partisan.” Payment had the idea to bring the number back. It’s a tough one — the only thing the cast really struggled with Monday — so Payment is happy to be sitting it out. “I was on ‘The Apprentice’ then,” Payment said. Brie Havrilla is the lone new cast member, while Rizzo, Payment, Chris Jenness, Carla Jenness, Chris Pepper, Kate Schwarzer, AnnMarie Rudstrom, Hannah Tauriainen, Rob Ernst, Brian Lyke, Charlissa Magan, Erin Micciche and Shaylon Cochran all return. The show was written by Rizzo, Chris Jenness, Carla Jenness, Jenny Neyman and Schwarzer. Paulene Rizzo and Carlee Rizzo handle lights and sound. Refreshments will be sold, with proceeds going to the Nikiski Children’s Fund, which provides for local kindergarten through 12th-grade students in need of everything from a pair of shoes to a temporary place to live. The show runs for two weekends. The first is Friday and Saturday. The second is Nov. 2 and 3. All shows start at 7 p.m. at Triumvirate North, 5 miles out of Kenai on the Kenai Spur Highway. Ticket prices vary by seating arrangement, but average $22. They’re available online through www. triumviratetheatre.org before the show, and at the door, but this show often sells out.

been erupting this year. The others in the top five are Mount St. Helens and Mount Rainier in Washington, Alaska’s Redoubt Volcano and California’s Mount Shasta. “This report may come as a surprise to many, but not to volcanologists, said Concord University volcano expert Janine Krippner. “The USA is one of the most active countries in the world when it comes to volcanic activity, she said, noting there have been 120 eruptions in U.S. volcanoes since 1980. Eleven of the 18 very high
threat volcanoes are in Oregon, Washington and California. Government scientists use various factors to compute an overall threat score for each of the 161 young active volcanoes in the nation. The score is based on the type of volcano, how explosive it can be, how recently it has been active, how frequently it erupts, if there has been seismic activity, how many people live nearby, if evacuations have happened in the past and if eruptions disrupt air traffic. They are then sorted into five threat levels, ranging from very low to very high. Denison University volcanologist Erik Klemetti said the United States is “sorely deficient in monitoring for many of the
so-called Big 18. “Many of the volcanoes in the Cascades of Oregon and Washington have few, if any, direct monitoring beyond one or two seismometers, Klemetti said in an email. “Once you move down into the high and moderate threat (volcanoes), it gets even dicier. The USGS said a dozen volcanoes have jumped in threat level since 2005. Twenty others dropped in threat level. Threat scores — and levels — change because of better information about the volcanoes, Klemetti said. Among those where the threat score — but not the threat level —
is higher are Alaska’s Redoubt, Mount Okmok, Akutan Island and Mount Spurr. Threat scores also rose for Oregon’s Newberry Volcano and Wyoming’s Yellowstone. None of the Big 18 changed in overall threat levels, even though 11 had overall threat scores dropping. Besides the top 5, the rest of the Big 18 are: Mount Hood, Three Sisters and Crater Lake in Oregon; Akutan Island, Makushin, Mount Spurr and Augustine in Alaska; Lassen and Long Valley in California; Mount Baker and Glacier Peak in Washington; and Mauna Loa in Hawaii.

What Others Say
Migrant caravan signals need for compassion, realism when it comes to immigration policy The United States has been a beacon
of hope for people who are poor, mistreated or persecuted. That is a unique position on the world stage that must not be abdicated. Many Americans trace their roots to people who left harsh conditions in other countries in search of a better life in the United States, and their migration, despite often-harsh opposition, ultimately has blessed the nation and its economy. So the first reaction upon seeing thousands of people marching from Honduras and through Mexico with hopes of reaching the U.S. border should be compassion. Journalists interviewing these people have uncovered stories about families fleeing gang violence and seeking hope for children whose future looks bleak in a country where the World Bank estimates 66 percent of the people are in poverty. In rural Honduras, about 20 percent of the people live on less than $1.90 per day. The people who make up the caravan are suffering deprivations and health problems, including swollen feet, lacerations and infections, as the Red Cross told politico.com. People don’t voluntarily endure such hardship unless their lives reach a critical level of desperation. They speak about the hope of a better life in the United States. The second reaction should be concern about the need to handle these people in an orderly and humane manner if they should make it to the U.S. border. For obvious reasons, the United States cannot allow thousands of people to storm their way in with no vetting. But the nation also should not cruelly separate families at the border, as it has in the past, while determining who stays and who is sent back. The longterm implications of such separations on the psyches of children and parents alike are likely to lead to many unintended consequences in the future. An asylum-vetting process already is in place. The truth is that most in the caravan are not likely to be granted their wish. Using statistics provided by the Syracuse University Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse, The New York Times earlier this year said 75 percent of asylum cases originating with nationals from El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala were denied between 2012 and 2017. Despite President Trump’s assertions that Democrats are behind the current wave, most of those years were during the Obama administration. Merely being impoverished or fearing for one’s life is not an official reason to seek asylum. An immigrant must prove he or she is part of a persecuted group that is being targeted because of religion, race, nationality or as retaliation for political speech. That does not mean the nation should turn its back on those who are desperate. While the president obviously sees the emerging caravan as an opportunity for political gain ahead of midterm elections, his tweets, including unsubstantiated fears that the caravan is being infiltrated by international terrorists, are not helpful. However, his threats to withhold international aid to Honduras and other Central American countries come closer to a productive response. Those nations are rife with official corruption that makes life unbearable for many of their citizens. Pressure could spur substantive changes that might make migration unnecessary. Meanwhile, Congress and the president should lay politics aside and resume efforts to pass meaningful immigration law. That would include a guest-worker system and a more realistic, fair and compassionate asylum policy. Compassion for others and safety for all on both sides of the border should be the true measure of our nation’s rich immigrant heritage.
On Ballot Measure 1, Alaskans will not be fooled
Alaskans will vote on the Stand For Salmon initiative on Nov. 6. The opposition to this measure has used trickery, deception, exaggeration, and now outright falsehoods to confuse and mislead Alaskans. If you can believe their line I have a great parcel of Florida swampland I’d like you to consider. Does anyone out there really believe the passage of this initiative will shut down tourism, reduce our PFD, or force the state into bankruptcy? That is what a former governor — a man who undercut habitat statutes every chance he could — would have you believe. Others opposing the initiative have stated that the trans-Alaska Oil Pipeline might be poorly maintained, and that the Dalton Highway (life gate to the North Slope) would not be repaired in a timely manner following a washout. All this is hogwash! Ballot Measure 1 creates a twotier process in which smaller projects that pose no significant impacts to fish habitat — such as road repair, culverts, bridges, or docks — receive very light review and will be handled similar to the way they are presently. However, mega-projects like Pebble Mine, Donlin Mine and Chuitna Coal will rightfully be required to meet higher standards due to their potential harm to salmon habitat. Pebble mine development poses a huge risk to the greatest red salmon resource in the world in Bristol Bay. The Donlin gold mine project has potential to destroy miles of wetlands and streams in the Kuskokwim River watershed. The Chuitna coal project, currently inactive, but if permitted would remove over 14 miles of produc-
Letters to the Editor Why I support Sen. Peter Micciche
Simply put, he is the best candidate to represent the Kenai Peninsula. Working in state politics requires hearing diverse, often very passionate opinions on an incredibly wide range of topics. It is not easy and not always immediately clear where the best solution lies on any given topic. It is important to have experience in negotiation, seek out facts, surround yourself with intelligent advisers and do your homework to get to a final action. No one person will agree with every action any politician takes, and the more actions you take the more vulnerable one is to criticism. I know and appreciate the process the senator goes through to reach tough decisions. I have spent weeks in the Capitol when our legislative sausage is working its way through the grinder and I will attest to the fact that we are fortunate to have one of the hardest working and thoughtful legislators in Sen. Micciche. The same commitment and tireless effort you see displayed in our community — Deseret News, Oct. 23 is carried out in Juneau when he is work-
V oices of the
P eninsula L oren F lagg tive salmon stream on the west side of Cook Inlet. Industry should not be allowed to proceed with these projects unless they can show that they will not destroy existing salmon habitat. Alaska has the greatest abundance of wild salmon in the world and these stocks need to be protected into the future. Some say that ocean conditions may be responsible for declining salmon returns in some stocks in certain locations around the state. This may be true, but it’s nothing at this time we can control. Yet even so, that’s why it’s all the more important to protect salmon spawning and rearing habitat in our anadromous rivers and streams. So why are these big corporations spending millions of dollars fighting this ballot measure which is designed to protect Alaska’s valuable salmon habitat? Well yes, there may be a few more hoops to jump through and it may take a little longer to get project approval. And yes, that increased level of review will drive project costs up a little more. But is that not a price worth paying to ensure that projects are done right and that salmon habitat is protected now — and into the future? I think it is. This is too important an issue for Alaskan’s to allow themselves to be confused by the
misinformation, unfounded speculation and fear-mongering by the opposition in their effort to defeat this important measure. Please take the time to read the ballot measure and then listen to the concerns of your fellow citizens, the folks in the bush, commercial and sports fishermen, and the many fisheries and habitat biologists whose careers were spent monitoring the fisheries and their habitat. Some have borne witness to the destruction caused by poor development practices and recognize the need for this initiative which puts clear, science-based salmon habitat standards in statute and provides for a public process when major resource development decisions, with potential negative impacts on salmon habitat move forward. If we are good stewards of the resource, salmon can be here long after the last barrel of oil, the last chunk of coal, and the last ounce of gold is taken from Alaska lands. But that assumption comes with a big “IF,” and that “IF” is whether Alaskans do their job now and ensure that salmon habitat is preserved and protected well into the future. Please vote with me on Nov. 6. Vote YES on Ballot Measure 1. Loren Flagg is a retired Alaska Department of Fish and Game fisheries/ habitat biologist who worked in both Kachemak Bay and on the Kenai and Kasilof River systems. Bible Museum admits some of its Dead Sea Scrolls are fake cal artifacts, the elaborate testing process undertaken and our commitment to transparency.” The scrolls are a collection of ancient Jewish religious texts first discovered in the mid1940s in caves on the western shore of the Dead Sea in what is now Israel. The massive cache of Hebrew documents is believed to date back to the days of Jesus. With more than 9,000 documents and 50,000 fragments, the entire collection took decades to fully excavate. Most of the scrolls and fragments are tightly controlled by the Israeli Antiquities Authority. But around 2002, a wave of new fragments began mysteriously appearing on the market, despite skepticism from Biblical scholars. These fragments, they warned, were specifically designed to target American evangelical Christians, who prize the scrolls. That appears to be exactly what happened; a Baptist seminary in Texas and an evangelical college in California reportedly paid millions to purchase alleged pieces of the scrolls.

WASHINGTON — When Washington’s $500 million Museum of the Bible held its grand opening in November 2017, attended by Vice President Mike Pence, there were questions even then about the authenticity of its centerpiece collection of Dead Sea Scrolls. Now the museum has been forced to admit a painful truth: Technical analysis by a team of German scholars has revealed that at least five of the museum’s 16 scroll fragments are apparent forgeries. The announcement has serious implications not only for the Bible Museum but for other evangelical Christian individuals and institutions who paid top dollar for what now seems to be a massive case of archaeological fraud. Jeffrey Kloha, chief curator for the Museum of the Bible, said in a statement that the revelation is “an opportunity to educate the public on the importance of verifying the authenticity of rare bibli-

Also eagerly buying up fragments was the Green family — evangelical Oklahoma billionaires who run the Hobby Lobby chain of craft stores and who famously sued the Obama administration on re-
ligious grounds, saying they didn’t want to pay to provide their employees access to the morning-after pill or intrauterine devices. The Greens are the primary backers of the Museum
tice Department, which said they had acquired thousands of smuggled artifacts looted from Iraq and elsewhere. The family agreed last year to return those artifacts and pay a $3 million fine.

Are we in Alaska anymore?
I
f you are new to Alaska, this is not normal. If you are new to this place that sits above the 60th parallel (most of it, anyway), Oct. 26 is not supposed to be 45 degrees and rainy. For us sourdoughs, we’re expecting to see snowflakes any day now. We’re expecting to be trick-ortreating with snow boots on, to be forming tightly packed snowballs that our unwary friends will soon discover are headed their way. We’ve long since popped off the summer tires and tightened on the studded wear. (Our poor roads are being eaten alive by those studs. Sorry, DOT.) We’re expecting a winter season that lasts from mid-October to mid-March, when the last heavy dump of snow unleashes itself on St. Patrick’s Day partiers. That is an ideal winter season, at least to me. But here we are, less than a week out from Halloween, and we don’t have any snow. That in itself isn’t too terribly unusual in recent years, but what is unusual is still how far away from snow we seem to be. The Kenai area has yet to see a daily low temperature of freezing, and once we do see that, the daily high must follow suit for a stable snowpack to stick around. If you’ve been around long enough to have received a cool $1,600 in your bank account earlier this month, then you know what kind of winters we look forward to here on the Kenai Peninsula. The last two seasons have brought the goods, putting down enough snow to satisfy those skiers, snowboarders, backcountry wanderers, snowmachiners and the like. The consensus seems to be that if we’re not moving around on snow by Thanksgiving, we’re in for a tough haul. September brought with it a bevy of daily high temperature records for Southcentral Alaska. Anchorage saw nine days last month that broke the daily high, leading to the warmest September on record, and the temps regularly sat a good 15 to 20 degrees warmer than normal daily highs. Having earned my journalism degree at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, I can say from firsthand experience that the first snow flurries of the season always arrived before the end of September. This year, there was no trace measurement of snowfall by the end of the month. The fact that we haven’t even had a freeze yet means we’ll be waiting a while before the ground is cold enough to allow snow to stick. So what do we do while we wait? Enjoy the warm weather (for now), I suppose, and keep up the snow dances. It might be the only thing that works.

Swimming just high school season usually not enough to make state By JEFF HELMINIAK Peninsula Clarion
This weekend at the Northern Lights Conference swimming and diving meet in Homer, it’s time to see who has put in the work. Not only during this high school season, but during the offseason and even before reaching high school as well. Because it’s very hard to just show up for the high school swimming and diving season and qualify for the state meet. “It shows the kids that have put the dedication and time in,” Seward coach Meghan O’Leary said. “Swimmers in
the past have asked me why they have struggled to make it to state. “It’s because everybody else is putting in hard work a lot longer, consistently, and that pays off.” The meet began Thursday with diving preliminaries. It continues today with swimming and diving preliminaries at 10:45 a.m. and Saturday with the swimming and diving finals beginning at 11 a.m. Off the approximately 200 athletes from 10 schools, only a few will make it to state. An individual must either win the conference meet or have one of the next best 12 times state- Homer’s Teddy Handley races in the boys 100-yard butterfly event Oct. 12 at the SoHi dual See SWIM, page A8 meet at Soldotna High School. No matter the final result of Thursday’s nonconference match between the Soldotna and Kenai Central volleyball programs, all parties were sure to win. That’s because the Stars were hosting their annual Pink Out volleyball match to raise money for the Central Peninsula Hospital Foundation. The SoHi gym and adjacent commons area was decked in pink banners, signs and encouraging messages for breast cancer survivors. “This year we’ve raised a lot of money for the hospital,” said senior Aliann Schmidt.
“This is more important than senior night.” The Stars were also celebrating senior night, and ultimately defeated crosstown rival Kenai 3-1 with scores of 25-15, 25-19, 18-25 and 25-14. SoHi lifted its season record to 14-4 overall, while Kenai dropped to 6-5. The night began with pomp, as all breast cancer survivors and those currently affected with the disease were recognized. Fans were able to donate money to the hospital with a dessert auction, along with with a serving contest for fans that raised $1,000 for the hospital. Watson, Texans blow past Dolphins By KRISTIE RIEKEN AP Sports Writer
HOUSTON — This is the Deshaun Watson the Houston Texans have been waiting for all season. Watson matched his career high with five touchdown passes to lead the Texans to their fifth straight victory, 42-23 over the Miami Dolphins on Thursday night. The second-year quarterback has played well at times this year but
hadn’t had a breakout game while dealing with rib and lung injuries over the past few weeks. The Texans (5-3) have left their 0-3 start behind with their longest singleseason winning streak since reeling off six victories in a row in 2012. “I think we’ve got the best offense in the NFL,” receiver DeAndre Hopkins said. “What we put up tonight against a pretty good defense, what we’ve shown in these past five games that we’ve won, we’re up there with
the best of the best.” Watson threw touchdown passes of 13, 2, 73, 49 and 2 yards to give him 34 career scoring passes, moving ahead of Dan Marino (32) for secondmost in NFL history after 15 games. “This offense can be very explosive,” Watson said. “We can do a lot of good things, put a lot of points on the board.” Miami’s Brock Osweiler, who had one tough season in Houston after signing a $72 million contract in 2016, threw for 241 yards with an intercep-
tion in his third straight start in place of injured starter Ryan Tannehill. Kenyan Drake had a touchdown run and touchdown reception for the Dolphins (4-4). They lost for the second straight week. “I’m fairly irritated right now,” Miami coach Adam Gase said. “I’m going to re-evaluate everything this weekend and figure out how to get better on defense, figure out how to sustain drives and get the ball into the end zone on offense.”
Alaska blackfish on the Kenai

ecently, I stopped by a shallow, scuzzy pond by Candlelight Drive in Kenai to look for Alaska blackfish. I had heard that they had been found in the stream that runs through the Kenai Golf Course downstream of this little this pond. The fish were not hard to find. As I walked along the squishy shore, a few 6-inch long blackfish darted from the shoreline. One dove into the mud by the shore, a typical behavior for this remarkable species. The Alaska blackfish is the only air-breathing fish in the arctic and one of only three fish
R efuge N otebook M att B owser species in the world that obtain atmospheric oxygen through a modified esophagus. This ability to breathe air allows them to thrive in shallow, weedy, mucky wetlands where other fish would die due to lack of oxygen. Blackfish reportedly can burrow into wetland moss when water levels drop temporarily, surviving as long as they remain moist. In winter,
blackfish sometimes breathe air through holes in the ice made by muskrats. The cold-hardiness of Alaska blackfish is legendary, with multiple reports of these fish apparently coming back to life after having been frozen. Subsequent studies demonstrated that blackfish cannot survive being completely frozen. Nonetheless, they are extremely hardy and can remain active under the ice in oxygen-poor lakes and ponds where other fish may not survive. wide. Relays must win or be in the next four statewide. Divers can be top two in the conference or the next eight statewide. “State high school swimming is very competitive. All of those swimmers are swimming year-round,” O’Leary said of those swimmers in places like Anchorage that also factor into the state berths. “It’s hard to just swim a 13-week season and go to state.” While exceptional height, strength, leaping ability or endurance can give athletes a leg up in many other sports, in swimming those attributes mean little unless a lot of time has been spent learning to move through the water. “It’s different. It’s so technique-based,” Soldotna coach Angie Brennan said. “Yes, there are swimmers who started swimming pretty early and get it back pretty fast.
“But feel for the water is so important. That’s something you can only get in the pool, so it takes planning. You can’t just throw on your shoes and go for a run.” With hard work, and not natural talent cycles, being so pivotal, programs that have great youth programs and offseason club programs can dominate. That has been Kodiak in the Northern Lights Conference. The boys have won the last nine NLC crowns. The girls have won nine of the last 11, with Soldotna breaking through in 2015 and 2016. While many coaches favor the Bears to repeat again, Brennan would love to hit pause again on Kodiak’s title train. “I think our girls are my favorite to win,” Brennan said, adding the Palmer girls also are formidable. “I don’t know if the boys can pull it off, but the girls have a great chance.” Brennan said assistant coach Jim Barkman has been pouring over times from across
the conference to try and give the Stars the best chance to win the team title and advance swimmers to state. Other conference coaches have been doing the same. For that reason, Brennan was not about to give away the events in which her swimmers will compete before the meet starts. She did say the title push will depend on Sydney Juliussen, Madelyn Brennan, Madelyn Barkman, Madison Snyder, Kortney Birch, Alex Juliussen, Darby McMillan, Katie Creglow and Dea Sustaita. “I think we’ve got a good, solid girls team that is going to score points as individuals as well as relays,” Brennan said. “It’s going to be really fun to watch. “I’m hoping the taper is going well and they’re going to show up on form.” On the boys side, Ethan Evans, Nathan Pitka, David Grinestaff, Kody Van Dyke, Brandon Christiansen and Jeremy Kupferschmid will be the key
figures in trying to accumulate team points and state berths. Divers Kylin Welch and Sam Skolnick also have shown to be among the best the state has to offer. “Our boys could pull off a really good relay,” Brennan said. Kenai Central coach Winter Heaven said the Kardinals will leave the battle for the team title for other teams. “The Kenai boys are just worried about best times and getting as many of our boys as possible to state,” Heaven said. While Heaven said there is some strategy to placing swimmers in events, he said it’s no secret Savaii Heaven will race in the 100-yard backstroke, something he has done the three previous years. Beyond that, Heaven said he has a group that should be able to challenge for state berths in many individual events and the sprint relays. The group includes Owen Rolph, Koda Poulin, Trevor Bagley and So-

rin Sorensen. Coach Heaven also said senior Peter Anderson saves his best for races and could be a factor. On the girls side, Heaven said the best chance for state berths come from Rachael Pitsch in distance events and Riley Reese in sprint events. Homer will have the chance to chase state berths from the comfort of home. Mariners coach Thad Gunther said it would be nice to get Clayton Arndt, Teddy Handley, Theodore Castellani and Jakob Nelson through to state in a relay or two. On the girls side, Madison Story has the top backstroke time in the state and also is very good in the individual medley. Alia Bales is a threat in the 50 freestyle, while Adeline Berry excels in the 100 butterfly. Gunther also said the girls should be able to put together solid relays. Gunther’s other big goal for the meet is to get his group of about nine freshmen girls and one freshman boy experience
with the conference meet format. “I’m expecting good races from them, and I’m looking for them to be a force in the future,” he said. O’Leary will bring a group of 13 — one of the bigger teams for Seward — to her third conference meet as head coach. “Most our of swimmers use it to see how far they have come,” O’Leary said. “Some kids started off the season not having swam all summer or in a couple of years. “They get to see the progress as a result of all the hard work they’ve put in.” Lydia Jacoby, just a freshman, is one of those that has put in the offseason work that it takes to make state. She has the state’s top time in the 100 breaststroke and is really good in the IM, as well. Connor Spanos also will be looking to return to state in the 100 butterfly. As for his other event? O’Leary said she will keep that to herself.
Red Sox lose firepower of DH LOS ANGELES (AP) — While the Red Sox wait to see whether J.D. Martinez can start Game 3 of the World Series, this much is true: Don’t take any bets on Boston shifting a star outfielder to the infield. “Mookie Betts at second? No, he’s not playing second base. Well, he’s not starting at second base,” manager Alex Cora said Thursday. The Red Sox lead 2-0, and there’s been a lot of speculation about what they will do Friday night when the designated hitter spot is dropped at Dodger Stadium. Martinez is Boston’s main DH and led the majors with 130 RBIs. He drove in two runs in each of the two wins at Fenway Park, and is 3 for 7 in the Series. Martinez rolled his right ankle on a double in the opener. He stayed in and, playing while sore, delivered a key hit Wednesday night. After that win, Martinez said he planned on playing in Game 3. He started 57 times in the
outfield this season, splitting time in left field and right field. The Red Sox traveled to Los Angeles on Thursday and Cora was at the ballpark, where he was asked about Martinez. “We’ll see. Actually, he felt better today walking around, he got treatment on the way here. He’s going to get treatment tomorrow. He’ll get treatment tomorrow morning. In the afternoon, we’ll make a decision,” Cora said. “It looked bad early in the game, but then it seemed like it was moving better towards the end. We’ll make a decision whenever — he’ll let us know,” Cora said. If Martinez plays the outfield, then either Betts, center fielder Jackie Bradley Jr. or left fielder Andrew Benintendi would lose their spot. Bradley was the MVP of the AL Championship Series and is a stellar defender. Benintendi got four hits against the Dodgers in the opener and made a stellar grab in front of the Green Monster in Game 2.

In 1944, the World War II Battle of Leyte Gulf ended in a major Allied victory over Japanese forces, whose naval capabilities were badly crippled. In 1949, President Harry S. Truman signed a measure raising the minimum wage from 40 to 75 cents an hour. In 1972, national security adviser Henry Kissinger declared, “Peace is at hand” in Vietnam. In 1994, Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin of Israel and Prime Minister Abdel Salam Majali of Jordan signed a peace treaty during a ceremony at the Israeli-Jordanian border attended by President Bill Clinton. In 2000, the New York Yankees became the first team in more than a quarter-century to win three straight World Series championships, beating the New York Mets 4-to-2 in game five of their “Subway Series.” (The Yankees matched the Oakland Athletics’ three in a row from 197274, and won their fourth title in five years.) In 2001, President George W. Bush signed the USA Patriot Act, giving authorities unprecedented ability to search, seize, detain or eavesdrop in their pursuit of possible terrorists. In 2006, a wildfire in Southern California killed five firefighters (investigators later determined the cause of the blaze was arson). Ten years ago: U.S. military helicopters launched a rare attack on Syrian territory, killing eight people in a strike Damascus condemned as “serious aggression.” Tony Hillerman, author of the acclaimed Navajo Tribal Police mystery novels, died in Albuquerque, N.M., at age 83. Five years ago: A Phoenix man went on a rampage, shooting to death four members of a family who lived next door to him, along with their two dogs, before turning the gun on himself; authorities speculated that the incessant noise of barking dogs drove Michael Guzzo to kill. Third baseman Will Middlebrooks tripped Allen Craig for a gameending obstruction call on Jon Jay’s ninth-inning grounder, giving the St. Louis Cardinals a bizarre 5-4 win over the Boston Red Sox and a 2-1 World Series lead. One year ago: MSNBC said Mark Halperin had been suspended from his role as a network contributor following charges from five women who claimed he sexually harassed them while he was an ABC News executive. President Donald Trump declared opioid abuse a national public health emergency and announced new steps to combat what he described as the worst drug crisis in U.S. history. At the request of the FBI and CIA, the president blocked the release of hundreds of records on the assassination of President John F. Kennedy while allowing 2,800 other files to come out. to serve a volleyball and hit one of three pizza boxes to send the money to the foundation. “This was a good distraction,” said Soldotna head coach Sheila Kupferschmid. “It’s all for a great cause and this was very much a success. We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to have these ladies here … it’s good to show some support.” As for the match, the Stars were able to take command and early and withstand some mistakes in a sloppy third set to secure the win. Schmidt headlined the senior night celebration with 12 kills and four blocks, and said the emotions of the night did not stop SoHi from executing. “We were super pumped,” Schmidt said. “There were a lot of emotions tonight, but we were able to come together and play hard.” Junior hitters Bailey Leach and Ituau Tuisaula overpowered Kenai’s front line for much of the match, as Leach knocked down nine kills and Tuisaula notched eight kills and five aces, and Leach said the experience and friendship
of the team has helped the Stars overcome a sluggish middle stretch of the season that saw the team lose twice to Northern Lights Conference opponent Wasilla in three days. “We have a lot of chemistry around us and the seniors on the team have been playing together since seventh grade,” Leach said. SoHi junior Holleigh Jaime also added 12 digs for the Stars. Schmidt’s dominant play at the net and Tuisaula’s strong service game helped the Stars to a 13-4 lead in the first set, helping them to overcome five missed set points in a row at the end that helped Kenai claw back some of the deficit. Schmidt finally got the win for Soldotna with a powerful kill down the middle. Leach helped SoHi to a 9-1 run early in set two with a tough service game combined with the stuff block tandem of Schmidt and senior Carsen Brown to put SoHi ahead 12-4. Brown finished with 25 assists. However, Kenai rallied back with 10 unanswered points to take a 14-12 lead thanks to sophomore Lexi Reis’ string of service points. Reis finished the night with three kills and three aces. “Our passing helped us in
the third set,” said Kenai head coach Tracie Beck. “When we pass, everything else falls into place.” SoHi scored four straight points to take the lead back, and while Kenai cut the lead to 21-19 late in the going, the Stars secured the 2-0 match lead with four straight points. Kupferschmid said she put in some younger players in the third set, which allowed Kenai to take advantage. The Kards put up a stout stuff block with Reis and sophomore Abby Avery that resulted in a 14-7 lead. SoHi got some late help from Schmidt, with a few kills, but the Kardinals held on to win the set and force a fourth game. Kenai took an early lead in game four at 4-2, but the Stars quickly took control with a 9-0 run, followed by another run of 7-1 that firmly put them into the lead at 18-8. The Kards called timeout at 21-11 SoHi leading, but couldn’t string together enough of a run to force another set. Kenai was led by sophomore Bethany Morris, who had six kills, while sophomore Kaylee Lauritsen provided eight assists. Sophomore hitter Abby Every notched three kills and freshman libero Jenna Streiff recorded 10 digs and two aces.
Reed leads at HSBC Champions SHANGHAI (AP) — Patrick Reed had a Ryder Cup he’d like to forget and spent three weeks at home in Texas preparing to finish the year strong. He was at his best Thursday in the HSBC Champions. Even in blustery conditions, Reed putted for birdie on every hole at Sheshan International and closed out his bogey-free round with a 25-
foot birdie putt for an 8-under 64, giving him a two-shot lead over Tony Finau and Xander Schauffele. “It felt really good, because if you can go out and shoot rounds like that in these kind of conditions, you know you’re going to have confidence when the wind dies down and there are perfect conditions out there,” Reed said.

bottom dweller, and in the Koyukon language as oonyeeyh, which means “the one you survive on,” the blackfish has long been harvested by Alaska’s indigenous peoples as food for themselves and their dogs. In late winter when other fresh food sources were scarce, these fish were caught in specially designed traps where they gathered under openings in the ice to gulp air. Though blackfish are only 7 to 8 inches in length, they can be taken in large quantities and are considered to be extremely nutritious. In the geologic past, Alaska blackfish ranged over a broad area from eastern Russia to Southcentral Alaska. A fossil specimen found in the Homer area shows that blackfish were once present on the Kenai Peninsula. In recent times this species occurs naturally in eastern Russia and western, northern and Interior Alaska. Until lately, blackfish had long been absent from Southcentral Alaska. Bob Chlupach, a retired Alaska Department of Fish & Game biologist who studied blackfish in the 1970s, told me that blackfish were accidentally transported to Anchorage in the 1950s. The story was that a U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Grumman Goose seaplane had flown into Lake Hood from Bethel. As the plane was brought out of the water onto a concrete ramp and drained, live blackfish were discharged from the plane into the lake. There is also a 1959 article in the Fairbanks Daily News-
Miner detailing how 300 Alaska blackfish were temporarily kept in bins in Lake Hood on their way to the National Aquarium in Washington, D.C. From Lake Hood, blackfish made their way through connected wetlands to other Anchorage water bodies. Later, blackfish were transported intentionally or unintentionally to waters in the Palmer and Wasilla area, where they flourished. By the 1970s, Alaska blackfish were suspected of causing declines of sportfish in Anchorage lakes. In 1972, an attempt was made to eradicate blackfish in Anchorage’s Jewel Lake using rotenone, a poison that interferes with respiration, but the air-breathing blackfish persisted. In the 1990s, ADF&G biologists Terry Bendock and Jeff Breakfield found Alaska blackfish in the city of Kenai. The fish now occupy two streams: the unnamed creek that flows through the Kenai Golf Course and the unnamed stream that runs under the Spur Highway between Walmart and the Kenai New Life Assembly of God. Both streams drain into the brackish waters of the lower Kenai River, which are not good habitat for blackfish. This barrier has apparently kept them from spreading to other streams in the Kenai River drainage, but blackfish have reportedly showed up farther north in the string bog off of Marathon Road. Local biologists do not know how Alaska blackfish were brought to the city of Kenai. We also cannot say how long the Kenai blackfish population will remain contained within the two aforementioned streams and surrounding wet-
lands. We do know that blackfish are hard to get rid of and that their presence will change things. How introduced blackfish will fit in to the Kenai River system is difficult to forecast, but we can make a few predictions. This exceptionally tough air breather will be able to colonize currently fishless swamps and small ponds. Larger fish, river otters, mink, loons, grebes, terns and people eat blackfish, so these predators may benefit. As they do in other places, blackfish will voraciously consume aquatic insects and tiny crustaceans, perhaps eating so much that they leave less food for other fish species. There is some anecdotal evidence from the Wasilla and Anchorage areas that introduced blackfish have led to diminished populations of sticklebacks and rainbow trout, both native species, through competition for the same invertebrates for food. While I thoroughly enjoyed seeing these hardy, unfamiliar blackfish at that little pond in Kenai, I am concerned about how they might affect other species — especially other fish — in the Kenai River system. Matt Bowser serves as Entomologist at Kenai National Wildlife Refuge. He thanks Bob Chlupach, Lucas Byker, Dr. Michael A. Bell and Jeff Breakfield for sharing information on blackfish in Southcentral Alaska; Celia Rozen and Sharon Prien for library sleuthing; and Ronald H. Brower for providing the meaning of the Iñupiaq name for blackfish. Find more Refuge Notebook articles (1999–present) at https://www. fws.gov/refuge/Kenai/community/refuge_notebook.html.

House cleaner tries her hand at being an interior designer need to explain it to her so nothing similar will happen again. Sometimes it isn’t what you say but how you say it. Hang onto your temper while telling her she has created a problem for you. It’s the truth, and she needs to hear it. If her response is to punish you by not showing up, you are well rid of the woman. P.S. Visit a paint store or Abigail Van Buren home improvement store and you may be pleasantly surprised to know that paint can be closely matched these days if you bring a small sample with you. They may also be able to recommend someone who can fix the wall for a reasonable price, or offer guidance on how you can fix it yourself. DEAR ABBY: I’m a 58-year-old woman, divorced for three years. I was in a loveless marriage for almost 20 years. Over the last three years I have lost 45 pounds and have started going to online dating sites. I’m attractive, so I get lots of attention. I post nice pictures of myself, nothing sexy. But the
kind of attention I’m getting is not what I want. I’d like to meet a man and try to have a long-term relationship. Most of the men “say” that’s what they want, too. But to be honest about it, it’s not. How can I come across as a woman who wants an LTR and not a “friends with benefits” or a hook-up? I don’t sleep around, so those things just are not my cup of tea. What do I do? -- LOST IN THE ONLINE DATING WORLD DEAR LOST: If someone wants to move your “relationship” to the next level before you are ready, you need to say you are not comfortable in moving so quickly. It’s straightforward and honest. It occurs to me that there are many kinds of dating sites, and you may be on the wrong ones. If you have friends who are also in the dating world, ask them which they use. But if you have no luck there, consider meeting suitable men the old-fashioned way -- by being introduced by people you know and who know you well. HAPPY BIRTHDAY for Friday, Oct. 26, 2018: This year you have the unique ability to combine an earthiness and an ability to see trends with a grounded, stable attitude and viewpoint. This combination can only help you. If you are single, you experience a lot of diversity when dating. You might not find someone like you, but you could find someone who seems to fit well with you. If you are attached, the two of you seem to give each other what you need at the moment. Accept your differences, as they make your bond more interesting. GEMINI knows how to pique your interest. CHAPPED LIPS Dear Heloise: How can I prevent my three young boys from constantly having chapped lips all winter? -- Rae-Ann S., Cambridge, Mass. Rae-Ann, put petroleum jelly on their lips when they go outside. Get them each a lip balm, and have them use it during the day. -- Heloise SHINY CRUST Dear Heloise: How do bakers get that shiny crust on their pies? -- Norma L., Florence, Ore. Norma, they use vinegar! That’s right -they take the pie crust out of the oven a little before it finishes baking, brush the crust with white vinegar, then return it to the oven to finish baking. -- Heloise P.S. And speaking of vinegar, let’s correct a couple of beliefs concerning one of my favorites: 1. Adding vinegar to the water when poaching eggs will not keep the whites from running. Nor will it make it easier to peel a hard-boiled egg. 2. Adding vinegar to the washer to set colors does not work. Modern dyes are unaffected by vinegar. EXPLODING POTATOES Dear Heloise: While cooking a couple of potatoes in my microwave, one of them exploded. Why did that happen? -- Pam C., Ironwood, Mich. Pam, always take a fork and poke holes in the potatoes before cooking in the microwave. This lets the steam out and prevents an exploding problem. -- Heloise MULCH TIME Dear Heloise: Just a reminder to your many readers to mulch their gardens in October. We all get busy and sometimes forget these things, but your plants will survive harsh winter storms with a nice, thick coat of mulch. It will retain not only warmth, but moisture as well. -- Wendy L., Elk River, Minn.

DEAR ABBY: I am wondering if anyone else has ever asked about this. I have had the same cleaning woman for three years. She does an excellent job and works hard. I got her the last six or seven of her clients. However, she has made little changes in the past when I’m not home. For example, she reorganized a kitchen drawer and laundry room cabinet without first clearing it with me. Yesterday, when I walked into my laundry room, I noticed two pictures had been removed from the wall and rehung in my living room. Furthermore, she used three nails to hang them and left the first nail in the wall because she had made a mistake. I removed the pictures and returned them to their original spots. The three holes in the living room wall remain. I live in an expensive penthouse. The holes are like bullet holes to me. This is not my apartment. I am a renter. In addition, I do not have the paint that matches, and I am not handy with spackle and painting. My cleaning lady is very sensitive. When I asked her to let me know the night before if she needs to cancel, I almost lost her for good. I had to call repeatedly, and I’m walking on eggshells now. -- RENTER IN NEVADA DEAR RENTER: For your cleaning woman to have done what she did was wrong, and you

tions reported to the diocese to make sure they were correctly handled. The review was prompted by concerns voiced by parishioners in response a lengthy Pennsylvania grand jury report released in August that listed the names of more than 300 priests and outlined the details of sexual abuse allegations, according to Etienne. People were saying that if such abuse was endemic in Pennsylvania, it must be true across the country.

“That’s why I’ve done this commission, Etienne said. “I just want to lay this to rest. There have been no new allegations of sexual abuse of minors or adults made to the Anchorage archdiocese since the Pennsylvania report came out, Etienne said. He said any such complaints would be automatically referred to authorities. The archdiocese did investigate “two or three complaints made in the last couple of months involving accusations of inappropriate behavior toward adults by clergy, but those were found to be non-credible and non-actionable, Etienne said. The commission’s review
is expected to take up to nine months. The review is set to begin Oct. 31. The commission, whose members include a former Anchorage police official, will submit names to Etienne for publication of those he says have been credibly accused. His goal, he said, is to consult with the Archdiocesan review board to publish the findings. If the commission finds a sexual misconduct allegation of a criminal nature that was not previously reported, the panel will notify Etienne. He would in turn report the matter to authorities, according to a decree appointing the commissioners. The Alaska Department of
Law agreed to work with the commission and archdiocese during the review, department spokeswoman Cori Mills said in an email to The Associated Press. “Please note that all criminal investigations are confidential and even the acknowledgment of a criminal investigation may hinder law enforcement’s ability to hold offenders accountable for their actions, Mills wrote. “Because of the confidentiality of these matters, the Department of Law will not be able to provide any further information on the commission or its work. The archdiocese covers the state’s south-central region.

ing an endorsement in the governor’s race. “There’s been no talk of that, said Raeanne Holmes, the tribe’s communications coordinator. “The practice is we’re really trying to be cautious and move away from endorsements as a tribe. The tribal administrator for the Douglas Indian Association was traveling to the National Conference of American Indians convention in Denver and not immediately available for comment.
Sealaska’s inaction on the narrowed governor’s race comes after the corporation donated $100,000 to an independent expenditure group backing the reelection of Walker and then-Lt. Gov. Byron Mallott. A spokesman for that group did not return a phone call seeking comment Wednesday. Mallott is a former Sealaska Corp. board chairman, and his son is the corporation’s current CEO.
Mallott resigned as Lieutenant Governor last week after making what Walker described as “inappropriate remarks to an unidentified female, which preceded Walker’s announcement a few days later not to seek re-election. While Sealaska Corp. is not endorsing a governor candidate, it is strongly opposing the passage of Ballot Measure 1, which would institute new environmental protections in order to defend salmon habitat.
Alaska Native corporations such as Sealaska own 92 percent of Alaska’s privately held land and would be disproportionately affected by Ballot Measure 1. Ten of the 12 regional Native corporations are opposing the measure. Bristol Bay Native Corporation is neutral on its passage, while AHTNA Inc. supports its passage. Dunleavy and Libertarian candidate Billy Toien oppose the measure, while Begich supports
