ello longtime Lions friends and families from Yakutat, Klukwan, Haines, Skagway, Juneau, Hoonah, Angoon, Sitka, Kake, Petersburg, Wrangell, Hydaburg, Klawock, Craig, Ketchikan and Metlakatla. Your host, the Juneau Lions Club, welcomes you! The Annual Juneau Lions Club Gold Medal Basketball Tournament is about to start its 73rd consecutive basketball tournament thanks to all of you and your families before you. Thanks to the fantastic basketball expertise, support and fan participation from our Southeast Alaska communities, the Gold Medal Basketball Tournament was inducted into the Alaska Sports Hall of Fame event category in 2012.

To renew and share the words of Lion Monarch Rev. Dr. Walter A. Soboleff Sr.: “We have come to our 16th (1962) annual Gold Medal Tournament because: 1. Each community unselfishly supports its team. 2. Each player, coach and manager gives their time to promote this game in a fine spirit. 3. Each family joins in to further this program.

4. You the fans are to be commended for enthusiastically supporting this event. Were it not for your loyal support, each tournament would not have succeeded. Together, let us strive to have foremost in each game: cooperation, cheerfulness, acceptance of constructive criticism, acceptance of the referee decisions, clean play, fair play, booing (with limits) and a good loser. Thank you so much.

asha Soboleff, the eldest son of the late Dr. Walter Soboleff, recently retired from the Juneau Lions Club. Soboleff had been active in the Lions Club and the organization of its annual basketball tournament for the past three decades. He spent about six years at the president of the service organization. He spoke to the Empire about his first memories of the Lions Club and helping put on the Gold Medal Tournament. ’45, and my dad — who was very active in the Lions Club back in those days — used to take me to the Juneau Lions Club luncheon that they had which was held at the Gold Room at the Baranof Hotel. And there were 100 Lions in the Juneau Lions Club back in the late-’40s, early-’50s. That was how I first became acquianted with the work the Lions Club was doing. My involvement on a regular, consistent, day-day-basis, actually began when I was a kid but it came to full bloom when I returned to be the assistant principal at Juneau-Douglas High School in ’87. I remained active in the club and there was another young man that was about my age, his name was Leo Houston — bless him, he’s gone now. Leo and I ran the tournament as Gold Medal co-chairs for several years together during that time. Empire: Was there many challenges to keep it running when became president? Soboleff: It’s always been like it is. It takes a year to plan it together. We set up the process where we write out invitations to the communities, inviting whomever to come and participate in our tournament and then we receive back from them their indications that they would like to or don’t like to come and be part of the tournament. Before it used to be handled by word of mouth and passed along by different individuals coming through Juneau. Now because of the electronic age we’re able to send those invitations out electronically. Empire: What’s been the most fulfilling part about helping put on the tournament for the past two decades? Soboleff: When you start filling up the gymnasium and one half of the gym on one side is reserved for Hoonah and the other side of the gym on the scoreboard side where the players check in, that’s for all the other communities: Juneau, Haines, Klukwan, Wrangell, Petersburg, Ketchikan, Kake, Angoon, Metlakatla. They all have to sit on the other side of the gym. That means that you get to see your friends that you grew up with and the elders who come in. It has become so much a part of the culture of Southeast Alaska that many of the ANCSA corporations and many of the Native corporations that meet all schedule

their committee meetings during the week of Gold Medal. The other satisfying part is it brings anywhere from $2.5 to $3 million dollars to Juneau. Not counting the amount of money that’s raised by the Gold Medal Basketball Tournament. It’s just a huge economic boom that becomes kind of the things that happens in the spring. You know spring is coming when Gold Medal Tournament starts to play. Empire: What would you say is your crowning achievement if you have one? Soboleff: The fact that we introduced the tournament to the women’s bracket was a pretty significant step because prior to that it didn’t exist. In order to bring change to the Juneau Lions Club you had to have an ability to recognize that there is something bigger than just (running) the tournament. You’re donating your time to do fundraising. We turn around and give all the money back to the community. Every penny. We’re a nonprofit which means you take money in, you have to disperse money out. It can’t be spent on yourself. • Contact sports reporter Nolin Ainsworth at 523-2272 or nainsworth@juneauempire.com.

Skagway women ready for debut Team might be first of its kind at tournament By Alex McCarthy Juneau Empire

T

his year’s Gold Medal Basketball Tournament will feature a rare sight — a team from Skagway. This Skagway team is even more notable,

because it might be the first time Skagway has ever had a women’s team at the annual tournament. Tiffanie Potter, one of the organizers of the team, said she’s asked around and nobody in town can recall a women’s team from Skagway ever participating in Gold Medal. Speaking by phone from Skagway, Potter

said Skagway produces plenty of basketball players, but it doesn’t seem to keep them. “There’s not enough of us who grew up playing basketball here that have come back,” Potter said, “until this last year.” A couple women graduated from college and moved back to town recently, Potter said, and a group of at least eight players is signed up to come down to Juneau for the tournament that starts March 17. It’s the first team, in any bracket, that Skagway is sending to Juneau since sometime in the 1980s, Potter said. She and a few of the other players have been scrimmaging against the Skagway High School’s girls basketball team for a while, Potter said, and the idea to play in the tournament hatched there. “Gold Medal got brought up one day after a scrimmage,” Potter said. “We were just sitting there talking and we all kind of committed to the idea, not really thinking it was going to happen, I think.” Contrary to that expectation, the team came together. They sent in their letter of interest to the Juneau Lion’s Club (which runs the event), and the Lion’s Club approved and

invited them to be part of the tournament. Skagway joins Angoon, Haines, Hoonah, Kake and Yakutat (the defending champion) in the women’s field. Skagway has only one Gold Medal title to its name, claiming the 1973 B Bracket championship. Though this year’s team is new to the field, Potter said she hopes they can make some noise in this year’s tournament. “We definitely want to go and put up a bit of competition,” Potter said. “We don’t want to go and just get totally stomped, so hopefully that doesn’t happen.” The community of Skagway has already started supporting the team, Potter said, with donations and encouragement. There’s already a buzz around the team that this dream is about to come true. “We’re just really excited and super grateful that the Lions Club invited us to join this tournament,” Potter said. “It’s something that I know all of us have really wanted to do for years, really.” • Contact reporter Alex McCarthy at 523-2271 or amccarthy@juneauempire.com. A History of Gold Medal Tournament Titles

I

t is not the size of the town that determines a bracket category championship win. Rather, it is the heart, soul and teamwork of the players that represent each community. If you can run the pick-and-role, switch on defense, block out and hit free throws, you can play at any level (of course, it never hurts to have a 6-9 center or a guard that is nothing-but-net from anywhere inside of half court). And if you cannot play, you can still cheer from the stands, run around the gym with a team banner, write your

favorite player’s name on your clothing or ask the referee if he needs to borrow your reading glasses. ANGOON (14 titles) B Bracket — 1976, 1978, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2016 C Bracket — 1984, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989 Women’s Bracket — 2004 Intermediate Bracket — 2006 SEE TITLES, Page 9
