International Quilt & Fiber Arts Festival

Welcome to the 15th Annual
October 7-9, 2022 Edward D. Hansen Conference Center, Everett, WA Cover Art: Best In Show: Kelp I by Katia Paroczi, Bellingham, WA 703 S. 2nd Street Post Office Box 1270 La Conner, WA 98257 www.qfamuseum.org (360) 466-4288 Hours: Wed-Sun, 11am-5pm Presented this year as part of the Museum’s 25th Anniversary celebrations.

Welcome to the International Quilt & Fiber Arts Festival!

We are so happy to be back in-person after being closed by COVID. I hope you are as excited as we are.

The quilts in this show are spectacular so do take your time and enjoy them. We have other wonderful examples of textile art as well and a few pieces from the Museum’s permanent collection. The creativity is simply amazing. We have lectures, workshops, and vendors all curated with the textile artist (or one who appreciates such art) in mind.

While you are here consider becoming a member of the Museum. We have information available on site as well as board members eager to share their passion. Join us in our mission to educate and support the creative spirit. This is a vibrant, active Museum and one of only a few of this type in the United States.

Speaking of the Museum, if you haven’t visited lately, take time after you view the show, to travel to La Conner and take in the current exhibits. Or plan a return trip in the near future. You will truly be inspired.

President, Board of Directors

Thank you, 2022 Board of Directors

Detail, Inexplicable Obsession... by Martha Peterson

I am so happy to see you here! Each Festival offers a unique experience and we’ve been missing that experience over the past two years due to the pandemic. 2022 marks several opportunities to celebrate. First, we are finally able to present this event in-person - a very welcome change from the many restrictions and challenges the pandemic has brought us! Second, this Festival is part of celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the Pacific Northwest Quilt & Fiber Arts Museum. We are so privileged to continue to offer the high-quality exhibits and programs you enjoy.

And finally, this year marks the first time that a fiber art entry was awarded “Best of Show.” Although quilts remain - and always will be - the core of our mission, fiber arts were recognized almost ten years ago as integral to that mission. Many wonderful, beautiful quilts, wearable and fiber art pieces were entered this year, coming from five different countries, and many worthy of the “Best of Show” award. But when Kelp 1, a woven tapestry submitted by Katia Paroczi, was offered as a candidate for this award, the judges were unanimous in giving this technically and artistically stunning piece of art “Best in Show.” We hope you will agree.

Our event chair, June Cook, has gone above and beyond in leading this year’s Festival team and every team member played a very active part in bringing this all to you. I cannot express the depth of my gratitude for this wonderful group of volunteers and staff! Thank you all!

Thank you so much for coming to the International Quilt & Fiber Arts Festival 2022. I hope you get inspired, educated, and entertained during your visit.

Tapestry, handwoven with handspun wool we on cotton warp at 12EPI.

Artist Statement

My tapestries, woven with handspun wool weft on cotton warp, reflect my admiration for the land and waterscapes of the Pacific Northwest, exploring everything from the hidden territory of the unconscious in the depth of the ocean to the infinity of the skies.

In my weaving I take advantage of the tactile properties of natural fiber and its unique richness of color and texture. Having chosen to work within the technical limitations of flat tapestry, my goal is to create pieces that are both painterly and textile-like.

I’m drawn to the long history and cultural traditions of weaving and aim to explore, sustain and share these traditions by combining centuries old techniques with modern imagery.
