ONE SOTP SHOP | Republic of Palau 2018/19

2018 SUMMER INTERNSHIP

One Stop Shop is an Administration Centre in the Republic of Palau. The inspiration for the external design came from the designs of the local traditiaonal houses and the tattoos on the natives' bodies. The reason for using the tattoo as part of the inspiration is that the tattoo represents the power and right they had. The importance of such a design can be observed from the many vital events will be issued in administration centre. In terms of the facade design, the roof inspired by the traditional house is placed in the main entrance, and the vertical strip beside the entrance is inspired by the local traditional tattoo. The client wants the project to be curved to fit a baseball field.

After communicating with the client, the expectation is to design a brutalist style exterior and spacious office spaces. Also, the ceilings of every level are lifted to 4.5 metres for installation of machinery. The north facade, facing the Kelon River, is covered with glass curtain to provide a beautiful view for employers to enjoy and release pressure while working, and it also allows rich natural lighting. Steel plates placed in front of the curtain wall from the second floor to the sixth floor are for decreasing the noise caused by the high way.

Lower Ground Floor is a public area. However, bike storage and bin room are for residents only.

Roof Top Garden is a collective area for the residents. The sitting area is designed with a 360 degree site seeing.

Cleaning tools can be stored under the stair People can enjoy the view of the river on the first floor balcony. Also, the natural lighting can access to the cafe through the empty cuboid form.

Shared Kitchens on first and second floor are collective area for friends visiting or family gathering

Figs. 1 Regarding to the construction detail, there is a groove design between each level, therefore an exposed channel is raised and screwed with bolts to the main beam. Heating pipes are built in the mineral wool thermal insulation to enhance the interior thermal performance. The construction of the ceiling is needed to act as an effective waterproofing system to prevent rainwater leaking.

Figs. 2 Flower-like structures on the roof garden are not only shelters, but they also work as a rainwater harvesting system, which the water will drain into the underground tank through the pipe in the structure. The water will be recycled and reused in the cafe, shared kitchen, inhibition, and garden.

" Form follows function" stated by Louis Sullivan becomes the key concept of the design, which the external form is influenced by the function. The purpose of wall less strategy on the ground level is to generate a better traffic flow for people to buy tea quickly and conveniently. The first floor is an enclosed sitting area for customers to drink tea. Folding doors are constructed for the interaction between outdoor and indoor spaces. The opened rooftop is for individuals to enjoy sunlight and view. Under the benches, a window is placed to allow illumination from sun.
