INTRODUCTION with historic

milestones in the trade show development

Despite long-lasting harsh economic circumstances, the 44th International Trade Fair (MOS) has once again completed its mission In each sector, the image of a trade show featuring this sector reflects economic circumstances in the market. It was found by Celje Fair Plc that visitor figures do not reflect recession as much as the rational decisions of our partners. Exhibitors plan their presentation carefully in advance therefore they have great expectations as far as the organiser is concerned. This does not mean that the only important thing in organizing an event is the showground infrastructure, which we have been upgrading and investing into heavily and has undoubtedly paid off, but also a proper presentation of the trade show themes to the target audience. Entrepreneurship, innovations and courage are key to success, which was also typical of the trade show this year – the 44th MOS was a trade fair of the winning entrepreneurs who are bravely

defying the unfortunate and longlasting economic crisis. This can also be seen from the trade fair statistics. The number of direct exhibitors once again exceeded 1000, and there was a record number of participating countries.

In the present world economic circumstances it is important to be brave and even more resourceful, and MOS together with exhibitors and partners who help co-create it embodies that. Although severe economic circumstances did not have an impact on the number of exhibitors this year, the number of

visitors reflected the crisis and was a bit down compared to last year. We have assessed that not only the crisis, but also the changed lifestyles affected the visit of general public this year, and will also affect it in the future. To sum up the exhibitors’ words, not only at the 44th MOS (this year again the number of business audience was up compared to the previous years) but also in the future we can expect even more target oriented audiences that know exactly what they need and what kind of information they want to obtain, and much fewer curious visitors who only come to spend their leisure time. Exhibitors’ and visitors’ response obtained through a traditional survey we conduct on the showground every year has shown that the 44th MOS did not strengthen its position and achieve recognition only in the South Balkans, the region where the number of exhibitors is constantly increasing and from which we bring more organised target oriented visitors every year, but also in other remote parts of the world. The proof of that is undoubtedly the visit of a great many ambassadors and other consular representatives who think MOS is an excellent opportunity to strengthen economic links and contacts between Slovenia and their country of domicile. New partners and themes that we prepared this year have shown that MOS has a bright future. The reason for this, among other things, is diverse exhibition programme which makes it possible for

other Yugoslavian republics. The exhibition, which the Ljubljana newspaper Jutro dubbed “One of a kind in the Drava Province, was visited by 25,000 people. The first trade show held in 1967 at Kladivar Athletic Association Stadium was followed by annual craft exhibitions. After the completion of Golovec Sports and Recreation Centre, the trade fair finally got its permanent location. The trade fair activities were expanded and the autumn trade fair the development to walk hand in hand with new and modern technologies and new themes that are going to define business and private everyday life of an individual. The information on numerous new and old trademarks featured by the 44th MOS is an indicator of how important the trade fair is even in the time of crisis. So, this year the 44th MOS featured the most innovative and globally oriented Slovenian and foreign trademarks.

promotion. In the time of crisis, this is even more important. Not only is Celje the Princely Town, but it is also known for its trade shows. The first modern trade fair event held in Celje dates back to October 1863 The first trade exhibition in 1922 is a milestone in the history of town. It was attended by 167 exhibitors from Slovenia and

started strengthening and asserting its role as a central event catering for craft and entrepreneurship. In September 1988 the trade fair first appeared under the new MOS name and logo. Today MOS is one of the most recognised trade show trademarks. In 2012 the 45th edition of MOS will be held in Celje.

More than forty years old history and tradition

MOS is a trade fair that prides on over forty years old tradition. Tradition and reputation gained home and, especially abroad, make it one of the biggest events of its kind in Slovenia and also in the region. International Trade Fair or MOS plays an important role in recognition of our country not only in the Balkans, but also all over Europe. Trademark recognition is manifested in great exhibitor loyalty. The majority, around 80% of exhibitors, are regular attendees. These companies and entrepreneurs value and respect MOS as a trademark and know how to use it to their advantage and for their own

INTERNATIONALIZATION 44th MOS even more international Strategic orientation of Celje Fair Plc towards international environment and active participation in the internationalization process of trade fair activities have enhanced international image of MOS - the Fair of All Fairs. The 44th MOS featured companies and representatives from 36 countries. This year Celje hosted even more direct companies from India and Serbia as well as entrepreneurs from Bosnia and Herzegovina and the neighbouring Croatia, which has been our partner for many years and which increased the number of exhibitors once again in 2011. An even bigger introduction to economic opportunities in their country was made by Indonesian embassy. Indonesia has a reputation of the largest economy in Southeast Asia which has recorded positive economic growth by 4.5% despite the global economic crisis. Indonesian representatives revealed that the World Bank considers their country as one of the six so-called developing economies which will account for 50% of the world economic growth by 2025. It is probably hard to imagine the potential this country has for Slovenian companies. Traditionally, the largest number of direct exhibitors attending MOS came from Germany, Italy and Austria.

International business meetings, cooperation agreements, ambassadors’ visits...

ambassador to Slovenia Mohammad Rahim Aghaeipour said that MOS had clearly demonstrated great potential Slovenian companies have in different economic areas.

International business meetings played an important role in the 44th MOS. The Showground hosted numerous economic delegations from near and far. As an organiser, we strived to bring organised groups of entrepreneurs from Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia. There was also a large organised group of businessmen from Croatia, Hungary, Macedonia, Kosovo, Italy and India who spent a few days at the fair.

Diplomats and economists about the instruments for breaking into foreign markets

44th MOS was visited by numerous ambassadors

Ambassadors to Slovenia are well aware of the importance of the Fair of All Fairs for the promotion of their economies which was the reason why they together with other consular representatives from Austria, Czech Republic, Croatia, India, Indonesia, Italy, Iran, Macedonia, Germany, Russia, Serbia and Turkey attended the opening ceremony as well as other events held on Celje Showground during the trade show. When the trade fair was over, Iranian

Exhibitors also had a chance to talk to the Minister of Foreign Affairs Samuel Žbogar who addressed them at a roundtable where he and his colleagues introduced the latest projects of economic diplomacy and services offered to Slovenian companies on foreign markets, a joint effort of the Ministry and diplomatic consular network. “These instruments will help Slovenian companies to break into foreign markets,” said the minister, and listed the following options: business offices abroad, economic fund projects, obtaining visas to help Slovenian companies, adapting diplomatic and consular network to the interest of economy, planned economic delegations visits abroad, planned meetings of interstate economic committees, etc. The minister also emphasized that strengthening Slovenian trademark is extremely important for strategic development.

closing report 2011 Serbian-Slovenian partnership in an enviable position

Serbian entrepreneurs are an important International Trade Fair’s partner. This year 32 companies from Vojvodina attended the 44th MOS, by far the largest number up to now, thanks to the organization of the Provincial Secretariat for Economy. This year an already traditional Day of Vojvodina was complemented by a meeting between the Serbian and Slovenian Chamber of Economy. Celje and Subotica Regional Chamber of Economy took this opportunity to sign a cooperation agreement. “We are pleased that our companies are slowly getting back in business after the worst crisis ever, a proof of which is also a positive influence of Slovenian investments in Serbia. Both political and economic cooperation are really excellent,” said Serbian ambassador to Slovenia Predrag Filipov. Cooperation agreement between Celje and Subotica Regional Chamber of Economy will create even stronger bonds between entrepreneurs. “The aim of this agreement is to strengthen and enhance activities on both sides, and collaboration between the chambers by joining economic partners from both regions,” said the Director of Celje Regional Chamber of Economy Drago Polak. Although the agreement does not comprise financial and legal obligations, it is a good basis for more intensive and efficient business activities. The main objective of the meeting was to target small and medium-sized companies whose business activities comprise renewable energy sources (construction business, metalworking, woodworking and electrical and plastic engineering). The conference covered Slovenian

business environment and investment opportunities in Slovenia. In addition to this, individual meetings were arranged, a perfect opportunity for collaboration, for making lasting business contacts, for exchange of experiences and invaluable information on market opportunities across the sectors. There were over 500 individual talks.

Slovenia presents an opportunity for successful multinational corporations. A proof of that is undoubtedly the latest move of the Japanese global manufacturer of hand electrical tools Makita which decided to move their sales, logistics and marketing activities for East Europe from Vienna to Slovenia. MOS was an opportunity for them to explain the reasons for moving their activities from Austria to Slovenia. “The main reason for moving our sales, logistics and marketing office from Austria to Slovenia is the fact that we wanted to be close to our customers and market. Despite the fact that Vienna is relatively close, Slovenia is a much more ideal location for our access to a very important East European market. In other words, Slovenia’s geographic position, which is in the heart of Europe, played a major part in making the decision. Slovenia is rather important for us, as it is a big part of our market. We see big potential in east and southeast part of Europe therefore we are convinced that Slovenia will be our springboard for this part of Europe,” said Makita’s Manager for East Europe Minoru Tanaka.

NEW THEMES FOR NEW TIMES 44th MOS addressed the latest issues- how to finance municipal projects and the future of energy MOS as one of the largest and most important trade fair events has had quite a few turning points in its history. In the past 15 years it has transformed from a strictly consumer-oriented trade fair into a business event. Trade fair which best reflects economic circumstances follows current economic themes, and also co-creates them. The 44th MOS too featured new themes which will dictate new directives in the development of the fair. New partners and new themes that we featured this year have shown that MOS has a bright future.

Mayors talked about obtaining European funds

In conjunction with the Government Office for Local Self-government and Regional Policy, Slovenian Association of Municipalities and Association of Municipalities and Towns of Slovenia we organised a meeting for mayors and other municipal officials. The main subject of talk was obtaining financial assistance from the European Cohesion Fund and the problems municipalities encounter when applying for it. On this occasion, nearly 200 representatives of local authorities also discussed opportunities for municipalities to create entrepreneur-friendly environment, tools and good practices for a successful development of municipalities within the next Multiannual EU Financial Framework 2014-2020. Examples of

good practice were introduced, and Slovene Export and Development Bank Plc (SID) as well as representatives of other business banks such as Hypo Alpe Adria and Banka Celje (Celje Bank) acquainted the participants with the conditions of financing infrastructure and municipal environment conservation projects.

Experts addressed burning energy issues

The 44th MOS was under the sign of burning energy issues. The conference organised by Slovenian Photovoltaic Industry Association was dedicated to solar power plants as solid and lucrative investments. Energetika.NET and Slovene District Energy Association

closing report 2011 prepared a National Energy Program Forum (NEP). Not only did the forum participants try to find answers to the question of the new NEP merely being a wish list or the basis for the Slovenian energy future, but also if Slovenian people are aware of the importance of energy and its contribution to a sustainable development. The participants agreed that the new NEP is welcome and absolutely necessary, but it still needs a few amendments. Energy experts had some scruples about the feasibility of the proposed program scenarios.

Finance, energy, consumer rights – three advice points for visitors free of charge

Three advice points on the showground were a useful addition to the hustle and bustle. Apart from two already traditional energy and finance advice points, this year the visitors could also take advantage of free consumer advice point. Energy points served as source of information where energy experts answered questions about heating systems in newly built complexes and refurbished apartment buildings, about heat pumps, solar collectors, building low-energy and passive houses, air-

conditioning and ventilation, the use of wood biomass and changing energy sources. “Visitors are mostly given advice on building and refurbishing heating systems, the choice of insulation, energy efficient and natural materials,” explained ENsvet adviser Carmen Hladnik Prosinc. Finance advice point was also well visited. The experts of Financial Park set

up by Moje Premoženje holding d.d. (My Wealth Holding) answered questions on insurance, loans, payment cards and all sorts of investments. “Most visitors want to know what they can get for their money, in other words they are interested in value for money,” explained the president of Moje premoženje holding supervisory board Gašper Zorman. “Consumers should find out about their rights which they have to, if necessary, exercise in practice,” was advice given to the visitors by the Head of European Consumer Centre (ECC) Jana Huč Uršič. ECC and Slovenian Consumers’ Association advice experts also gave advice on the quality of foodstuffs, cosmetics, sustainable consumerism, but also legal advice, advice on how to return a product, how to assert a warranty claim, what to do in case of dissatisfaction with tourist services, or when having difficulties with crafstmen.

INNOVATIVE MOS The best and most innovative brands The 44th MOS was even more diverse and featured new trends in the exhibition programme, side events and entertainment programme. The trade fair also saw the return of some most renowned companies that have not attended in the past few years, but also some big international corporations. Attending MOS is also a big step forward towards recognition of products and services of young, innovative entrepreneurs.

This unique opportunity was given to an innovator and entrepreneur Erika Drobnič from Železniki for multifunctional children’s furniture. She inspired the committee with a multipurpose cradle which can be taken to pieces after it has served its purpose and turned into a new furniture set – a table, two chairs and a toy basket. The second sole proprietor to showcase his innovation was Janez Rihtar from Murska Sobota whose business is development and production of flat lights. His family business Osvetljevalna Optika deals with the development of optical elements and systems for lighting and illumination

MOS featured the future of the consumer home and office

The 44th MOS also featured big international corporations of which Slovenian Microsoft subsidiary was present for the first time. Their future of consumer home and office, that is, the future of living room, kitchen, workplace or office and the future of conference room saw its premiere at the 44th MOS. They showcased technologies that ease spending leisure time, but above all make work easier. The concept of the future of the consumer home is based on integration of all household appliances and other devices controlled by one system – a computer, mobile phone or tablet computer.

Innovations in own offer – a prototype unit equipped with the most modern technologies in the area of rapid prototyping and reflexive system engineering – introduced Pipistrel from Ajdovščina, one of the most innovative

and globally oriented Slovenian companies. The company director and owner Ivo Boscarol thinks that there are a lot of innovations in Slovenia but the invention itself means nothing. “The circle has to be closed for an invention to become an innovation, to be industrialised and to become marketable

As usual, at the 44th MOS too the best and most innovative exhibitors or their products and services received awards presented to them by Celje Fair Plc, OZS and Celje Municipality. Celje Fair Plc presented two bronze, two silver, four gold awards and one special award. Out of 36 registered entries, OZS judging committee selected three exhibitors who received gold, silver and bronze guild. The awards are for the quality of displayed product or service and the whole presentation of activities, projects and programmes. The committee also presented a special award for linking academic and scientific sphere with economy, and a special award for autochthonous and artistic impression of the exhibition stand. Celje Municipality presented three awards and a special 2011 award for a traditional Slovenian craft product.

According to Ivo Boscarol, they start working on new products once they have found a market for them. “We have always paid attention to what is missing in the market, and whether we are able to make and deliver this, so we have never had to deal with a problem of how to sell our invention.”

The introductory press conference was held in Celje on 31 August 2011 and a day later the trade fair was introduced to the public at the press conference in Zagreb. MOS IS ALSO A SYNONYM FOR ENTERTAINMENT Music and dance to spice up the hustle and bustle Although MOS is mainly a business event, a place where new business deals and contacts are made, it is still an entertaining and family friendly event. Central events stage in the showground Atrium caters for entertainment. Music, dance and sports activities also left a mark on the hustle and bustle.

Daily visits of famous sportspeople

Every day MOS was visited by famous Slovenian army sportspeople who, as usual, inspired all the sports lovers. The visitors had a chance to see protagonists of nearly all important individual sports disciplines.

International dance steps

The visitors to MOS could not overlook around 120 folklore dancers who visited MOS as part of the 2011 International Folklore Festival “From Celje to Žalec”. There were folklore groups from Czech Republic, Croatia, Turkey and Ukraine. The trade fair was given a touch of fun by Indonesian dancers who aroused a lot of enthusiasm among the visitors.

Lots of adrenalin, but still safe

The 44th MOS also gave some adrenalin buzz to automobile fans. Under the watchful eye of one of the most recognised safe-driving instructors Brane Küzmič the visitors could experience driving through obstacles with off-road vehicles on the showground safe-drive speedway.

Trade fair mascots make the young and old happy

The 44th MOS also featured quite a few sympathetic exhibitors’ mascots that were often captured by photographers. These interesting and goofy characters were especially popular among our young visitors who enjoyed being hugged by soft and gentle Hypo Bank hypos, JUB company cartoon character Bojan, Microsoft robot and others. The mascots bestowed sweet gifts on passersby and greeted the youngest and oldest visitors with a smile, inviting them to pay a visit to the exhibition stands of the companies they were promoting.

CONCLUSION

44th MOS once again brought together the most enterprising, innovative and bold A long-lasting economic recession and a growing mistrust in the global markets have not spared the trade fair organization either, but the most enterprising, innovative and bold do not give up as they are well aware of the importance of being present in the market, especially in these harsh economic times. Therefore, Celje Fair Plc has managed to pull it off once again and the 44th MOS featured nearly 1,700 exhibitors from 36 world countries. The event’s general sponsor was again Hypo Alpe Adria. MOS as the largest trade fair in the region over and over again attracts companies from new countries which want to take this opportunity to enter the EU and South Balkans market. Strategic orientation towards internationalization of trade fair activities has brought better results, and as a result of this, the share of foreign visitors in 2011 accounted for 11%. Not only neighbouring states, but also countries such as India, Indonesia, Taiwan and Qatar have taken advantage of MOS to break into new markets with

new products and services. Traditionally, mostly South Balkans states and EU member states have taken advantage of MOS for group presentations and visits of economic delegations. Although a smaller visit was recorded this year (137,158 visitors), the exhibitors assured us that the right target groups paid a visit to the showground. We both noticed that every year visitors

come more prepared and with specific questions, which demands more careful preparation and planning of the event by the organiser and exhibitors. The results of the survey conducted on the showground during the trade fair have shown that together with exhibitors we have managed to meet the visitors’ expectations. The majority – over 75% of visitors said that the trade fair lived up to their expectations. It is also encouraging to know that more than 70% of interviewed visitors rated the event the same or even better than last year. The share of those who are determined to attend next year is higher – 80% said they would attend in 2012. Less than 2% said they would not attend next year. Celje Fair Plc has received the results of the survey carried out among exhibitors with optimism. The majority (nearly 77%) were satisfied or very satisfied with their performance, which can be seen from the answers to the question about their expectations. Positive ratings and determination to attend the 2012 MOS

are the result of exhibitors’ satisfaction with the attendance of private and business visitors. 71% are already decided to attend in 2012 and only 2% said they would not attend.

Long tradition, trust and reputation are the assets that place MOS at the forefront of trade fair events in the region. This year’s results have encouraged us to plan the next edition – the jubilee 45th MOS in 2012 – even more carefully and well in advance. Long tradition, trust and reputation are the assets which place MOS at the forefront of trade fair events in the region. MOS is a venue for new business deals and new business opportunities. More than a third of exhibitors told us they made a new business deal at MOS. The majority found a new customer, the second large group entered into a contract and the third arranged a meeting with a new business partner.

More than a third of exhibitors told us that they made a new business deal at the 44th MOS! Exhibitors’ positive results, new partners and themes we prepared this year are an indicator that MOS has a bright future. We set new trade fair development goals at the 44th MOS therefore we can hope for more new technologies and achievements of domestic and foreign economy. We will feature top, globally recognised leading brands.

range of new products and technologies and to address the latest business issues that is why we will carefully consider opinions and suggestions of our partners – exhibitors, visitors, coorganisers of side events, and follow the development trends in sectors which play a major part in the organisation of MOS. This way we will strengthen the reputation of MOS as one of the largest and most important business events in this part of Europe. MOS trademark is highly recognised in the region, but also in remote parts of the world which is why in the future the trade fair will help enhance international competitiveness of Slovenian companies. Here we are counting on support of the local community and stable and encouraging environment in general. At the same time we hope we can count on support from our loyal partners as well as new co-creators of professional side events programme, the ministries and the state.

The 45th MOS will host exhibitors and visitors from 12 to 18 September 2012. On exhibitor request it will be a day shorter in 2011.
