Fair of All Fairs
Introduction MOS LIVED UP TO EVERYONE'S EXPECTATIONS DESPITE HARSH ECONOMIC TIMES Long-lasting world economic recession presents a special challenge for trade fair organizers. Celje Fair Plc has been aware of this since the first information on global recession was released to the public, which was in 2008 during our biggest trade fair event - International Trade Fair. Despite the harsh economic realities our exhibitors had to face, we managed to organize the 42nd and 43rd MOS in 2009 and 2010 quite successfully thanks to our active approach and efforts to bring our fair offer closer to exhibitors and therefore help them prepare a successful presentation.
Both in terms of product range depth and breadth as well as envious number of visitors, MOS still remains a crossroads of opportunities for the most enterprising. The showground is also a place where in eight days a great many events, roundtables, lectures, presentations and various business and informal meetings take place, which makes it one of the top established business events. In 2010 too International Trade Fair lived up to the slogan, “Fair of All Fairs”, com-
plemented by the slogan, “Good Vibrations”, which symbolized the logical continuation of the economic optimism. This can undoubtedly be seen from the trade fair statistics as well as exhibitors' and visitors' predictions for the future editions which inspire us with optimism. We are convinced that
2010 MOS good vibrations for economic optimism
MOS as the largest business and trade fair event in the region reflects economic situation that is why global crisis can be easily detected, but exhibitors taking part in the »Fair of All Fairs« are well aware of the benefits of such promotion and the importance of being present on the market. They know it is not only important to persevere, but also earn and retain the trust of customers and business partners. We are convinced that even in these harsh economic times, trade fairs have kept or even enhanced their main role: showcase the latest offer with all the related activities, make contacts with customers, buyers, business partners and suppliers, and last but not least, continue to play a vital role in consolidating the company reputation. Not only will they keep their role as important means of communication between business partners and buyers, but they will also enhance it. The 43rd International Trade Fair has once again acted as an important link between domestic and foreign exhibitors who see it as a perfect venue for new opportunities, as a place to exhibit the latest achievements of domestic and foreign entrepreneurs.

Fair of All Fairs
The history MOS MAKES THE PRINCELY TOWN EVEN MORE COSMOPOLITAN Celje is not only the Princely Town, but also the town known for its trade fairs. First modern trade fair event was held in Celje already in October 1863. The exhibition of agriculture produce and craft products was a local one but extremely important for further economic development. Fifteen years later, in 1878, the first provincial exhibition was organised and a decade later, in 1888, the second.
Savinja River, and even on the river itself. An independent financial institution called “Celje Exhibition” organized a resounding event “Celje 57” which brought about 120 exhibitors and over 43,000 visitors to Celje from 24 August to 4 September. The decision about the annual trade fair was made ten years later, on 2 September 1967, at the first Craft Guild Meeting in Dobrna.
First trade exhibition, a milestone in the town history, was held in 1922 and was attended by 167 exhibitors from Slovenia and other Yugoslavian republics. The exhibition was dubbed “One of its kind in the Drava Province” by Ljubljana Jutro paper and was visited by 25,000 people. What followed were three other exhibitions held in Celje in 1935, 1937 and 1939.
The first trade show, held in the autumn of 1967 at Kladivar Athletic Association stadium, soon became an annual craft exhibition. After the completion of Golovec Sports and Recreation Centre, the trade fair finally got its permanent location. The trade fair activities were expanded and in the autumn it became a central event catering for craft and entrepreneurship.
After the First World War, in 1947, craftsmen from Celje organized the first economic exhibition on the premises of Celje Centre High School. What is particularly interesting is that the entertaining part of the fair took place on both sides of the
In September of 1988 the trade fair first appeared under the name MOS and with a new logo. What followed were the golden nineties when the trade fair reached the pinnacle. At the end of the twentieth century the trade fair role changed. The image
of MOS as a merely selling show started fading and it adopted a new role as promoter of new trends, innovations, and economy in general. The development of the fair owes many thanks to the modernization of the showground facilities and infrastructure that can match any European showground. In four decades, MOS has become the largest trade fair and business event not only in Slovenia but also in the whole region. The trade fair has a great reputation among business audiences and every year it attracts new exhibitors from new countries. The 43rd MOS boasts impressive facts and figures. The number of indirect exhibitors exceeded 1000 once again. In total, there were 16 participating countries, some of which such as Egypt, Indonesia and Qatar took part for the first time.
Celje is not only the Princely Town, but also town known for its trade fairs 4

Internationalization MOS AND INTERNATIONALIZATION OF THE TRADE FAIR ACTIVITIES Rapid environmental change, rapid advance in technology, changed market structure and growing competition demand constant adaptability, increased efficiency and looking for new opportunities which is the reason for International Trade Fair organizer, Celje Fair Plc, to become part of the international environment. Due to the role of the largest fair and business event in the region, MOS has always been part of the international environment, but the 43rd edition with increased and strengthened activities also enhanced the international image of the “The Fair of All Fairs. The 43rd MOS traditionally featured group presentations from Austria; this was the
15th year in a row for Croatian Chamber of Craft to organize a group presentation of tradesmen and entrepreneurs from Croatia. Vojvodina, too, celebrated an important jubilee. In the past five years MOS has featured 94 companies from
Vojvodina, some of which attend every year, but also a great many new ones for which MOS has become a springboard to European markets.
Day of Economic Diplomacy at International Trade Fair (MOS) 2010 MOS featured Indian companies for the second time and an organized group of exhibitors from Indonesia who attended for the first time. Companies from Egypt and Qatar took part for the first time too. Group presentations from distant and less known parts of the world introduced the possibilities of new business opportunities to Slovenian companies and entrepreneurs. For this occasion, Indonesian embassy organized a business conference which introduced the possibilities of economic cooperation with the Country of a Thousand Islands.
Russia. Day of Economic Diplomacy organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was an opportunity for entrepreneurs to obtain information on support they can count on provided by Slovenian diplomacy to help them enter foreign markets.
The conference titled Doing Business in Slovenia, organized by Slovenian Chamber of Craft and Small Business (OZS), Public Agency for Entrepreneurship and Foreign Investments (JAPTI) and Slovenian Ministry of the Economy was quite a success since it was attended by over 200 craftsmen and entrepreneurs from the European Union member states, Eastern Europe and
Celje Fair Plc will continue to strengthen its activities in the internationalization process of trade fair activities. The key to success is good cooperation with business partners, participation in joint projects and ventures, and increasing attendance of international events and meetings which enhance visibility and international reputation.
17
Internationalization
In the words of Indonesian ambassador for Slovenia I Gusti Agung Wasaka Puj, the country remains stable even in the time of economic crisis and has recorded 4.4% economic growth. Indonesian people are aware of the fact that good collaboration with our country does not only depend on product exchange, but also on exchange of information, which they will do to encourage and enhance cooperation between the two countries. 43rd MOS was visited by a Serbian economic delegation by invitation of Celje Fair Plc. According to Slobodan Milosavljević from Niť, this delegation included entrepreneurs who due to financial and logistic reasons would never be able to make it to Celje and discover excellent opportunities created by MOS. The guests were thrilled to see innovative approaches of entrepreneurs as well as business opportunities created by the trade show.
In conjunction with a partner from Qatar, a project on group presentation of Slovenian companies in Qatar was introduced at the 43rd MOS which is a result of efforts Slovenian government has made to facilitate internationalization and encourage direct foreign investments. This project is a breakthrough to a new financially strong market and a new opportunity for all Slovenian manufacturers.
During the International Trade Fair, Celje Showground offers a great many opportunities of international collaboration between home and foreign entrepreneurs. A perfect example of such collaboration is a visit of economic delegation from Banja Luka which discussed the possibilities of taking part in 2011 MOS. The president of Banja Luka Chamber of Industry and Economy in the Serbian Republic Nikola Tolimir said that not only does International Trade Fair have a European character, but also an international one.

Energy and the environment MOS - ENERGY EFFICIENT AND ENVIRONMENTALLY-FRIENDLY Renewable energy sources and efficient energy use are the foundations of further development which also takes into account adverse effects on the natural environment. Since Slovenia is one of the member states of the European Union which is the leader in this domain it had to follow environmental guidelines and implement regulations. Some of the requirements Slovenia has to meet by the end of 2020 are 20% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, generating 20% of energy from renewable energy sources, and finally, improving energy efficiency by 20%. As a result of this, there have been quite a few programmes and measures taken in Slovenia in the past few years to encourage efficient energy use and also regulations that allow only low-energy building. By passing the Regulation in support of electrical energy generated from renewable energy sources, which came into effect in May 2009, Slovenia started investing heavily into renewable energy sources. These trends in economy were reflected in MOS which as a leading trade show event is a barometer of the Slovenian economy that is why every year more exhibitors featuring energy efficiency and renewable energy sources take part, and in 2010 their offer represented one of the largest exhibition segments of the trade show.
These trends in economy were reflected in MOS which as a leading trade show is a barometer of the Slovenian economy
The 43rd MOS featured a diverse offer of energy efficient products such as solar heating collectors, heat pumps, energy efficient building materials, low energy and passive buildings. In the renewable energy sources domain, the suppliers of biomass systems were joined by suppliers of solar power stations which prevailed at the 43rd MOS. There are also more and more suppliers of wind turbines to generate energy, and suppliers of products and services for biogas plants. Environmental component is at the forefront of exhibitor presentations as it has become a more important competitive advantage due to greater awareness of people. The 43rd MOS therefore featured a wide range of products and services which contribute a great deal towards environment protection, for example, rainwater collectors, composters for bio-waste,
compost lavatories, etc. as well as solutions which due to optimised production processes use less energy and cause less pollution to the environment.
Environmental component is at the forefront of exhibitor presentations as it has become a more important competitive advantage due to greater awareness of people This kind of hustle and bustle on the Showground was complemented by a new feature of side events programme which came in the form of three-day free Energy Home Consultations providing a lot of advice on energy efficient dwelling and energy saving, prepared in conjunction with Energija doma website (www.energijadoma.si).

MOS and the media IMPORTANT GUESTS AND BURNING ISSUES RECEIVED MEDIA ATTENTION Every year the showground hustle and bustle receives massive media attention. A great many events such as new products and innovations, discussions about the latest social and economic issues, attendance of prominent home and foreign guests attract a large number of local and foreign reporters. At the 43rd MOS reporters still could not avoid one of the most burning issues – the impact of global economic recession on small business (craftsmen and entrepreneurs). Domestic and foreign media took advantage of the ministers and important civil servants to obtain information on the most efficient ways of helping companies that have been badly hit by recession. Business meetings between home and foreign entrepreneurs also received a lot of media attention and press conferences, held as a complement to the professional side events were also well attended. It has become a tradition for the opening day to be well visited by journalists, and this time the Showground also hosted media representatives from Croatia who were also invited to attend as an organized group in conjunction with HOK. In addition to the opening speeches – the
43rd MOS was officially opened by the Slovenian Prime Minister Borut Pahor, but the audience was also addressed by Executive Director Of Celje Fair Plc Breda Obrez Preskar, the mayor of Celje Bojan Šrot and the president and vice-president of Slovenian Chamber of Craft and Small Business Board of Directors Štefan Pavlinjek - the official tour of the fair received a lot of media attention where Slovenian PM Borut Pahor greeted foreign delegations. The Economy Minister Darja Radič who could not avoid addressing other burning issues also paid a visit to the Showground on its opening day. The reporters were particularly interested to find out how the government would tackle the problem of solar power stations as one of them is also installed on the roofs of the exhibition halls. The journalists massively attended daily events on the Showground, including the visits of prominent guests who came to see the hustle and bustle and took active part in discussions. The 43rd MOS was visited by the Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Žbogar, the Labour, Family and Social Affairs Minister Ivan Svetlik, the Local Government and Regional Policy Minister Henrik Gjerkeš, and the Police Chief Janko Goršek.
43rd MOS featured ministers, innovators, hot beauties...
An innovator Peter Florjančič, a porn star Tarra White and a brush maker Maks Žnidar also received high media coverage. In conjunction with Sleep Fit Company from Grosuplje, Peter Florjančič introduced one of his latest inventions – home fitness centre which combines a bed and a device for active exercise and reflex massage. A hot porno star Tarra White came to promote the 3rd Erotika 69 show, and Maks Žnidar, whose 85th birthday coincided with the 43rd MOS, is an exhibitor who has attended all 43 editions and who convinced a great many reporters that he still very much enjoys being in this business. The 43rd MOS also received a lot of media attention by journalists from Novi Sad who came to report about the fifth anniversary of Vojvodina. Reporter for RTV Slovenia Jože Skok traditionally prepared a special show Studio at Five, dedicated to the hustle and bustle and broadcast directly from the Celje Showground. He talked to his guests about the burning issue of grey economy on company liquidity and delay in payment, public finances, and competitiveness of Slovenian economy. Apart from the well visited opening day, as usual, the journalists massively attended breakfast on the closing day, which is when the organiser released the first figures and gave feedback on the trade show performance. 20

A new feature of the Press Centre – audio and video production - was also well received. This way the most newsworthy and interesting content were shown in picture and sound, which attracted newer visitors to the official website. We also registered MOS on social networking site Facebook shortly before the fair opening, creating a corporate profile of Celje Fair Plc (www. facebook.com/ce.sejem).

Fair of All Fairs
Conclusion 43rd MOS LIVED UP TO THE REPUTATION OF ÂťTHE FAIR OF ALL FAIRSÂŤ During the 43rd International Trade Fair preparations, again the organizers could not avoid numerous questions from the media and business audience about the effects of economic recession on the largest trade fair and business event in this part of Europe. We are pleased to know that craftsmen and entrepreneurs attending the event are well aware of the importance of such promotion in the time of crisis. Once again, the 43rd International Trade Fair lived up to the reputation of the largest trade fair and business event in Slovenia and this part of Europe. The fair, which took place on Celje Showground between 8 and 15 September 2010, featured 1,685 exhibitors, 1,015 direct and 670 represented companies from 34 countries. The organizers pulled it off once again and exceeded the magical number of 1,000 direct exhibitors, including some countries taking part for the first time - Egypt, Indonesia and Qatar.
43rd MOS featured Egypt, Indonesia and Qatar It has become a tradition for the International Trade Fair to feature Austrian companies, Croatian Chamber of Craft (HOK) which organized a group presentation of Croatian craftsmen and entrepreneurs for the fifteenth time in a row, and Vojvodina which also celebrated an important jubilee on the Celje Showground. In the past five years MOS has featured 94 companies from Vojvodina, some of which attend every year, but also a great many new ones, for which MOS has become a springboard to the European markets.
2010 MOS featured Indian companies for the second time and an organized group of exhibitors from Indonesia who attended for the first time.
The visitors to the fair came well prepared and with clear objectives The 43rd MOS was attended by nearly 150,000 people, which is less compared to the year 2009, but the exhibitor response and their ratings showed their exhibition stands were visited by the target groups they wanted to reach, both buyers and business partners. In other words, the visitors to their exhibition stand were well prepared and had clear objectives. 2010 MOS recorded more foreign visitors than the previous years. The number of foreign visitors exceeded one third. Most foreign visitors came from Croatia, Serbia, Italy, Romania and Bosnia and Herzegovina and some from Qatar, India, Russia and other neighbouring countries. The increase in the number of foreign visitors is due to the internationalization process. We are well aware at Celje Fair Plc that the key to success is good cooperation with
foreign business partners, participation in joint projects and ventures, and increasing attendance of international events and meetings which enhance company visibility and international reputation. Despite the harsh global economic crisis we managed to fill all the available facilities. Due to the cancellation of some regular exhibitors, we managed to attract a few new ones as well as those who in the past year or so missed this excellent opportunity for self-promotion but decided to return due to recession. The trade show whose general sponsor has been the Hypo Group Alpe Adria for the third year in a row 26
Conclusion is an ideal venue to deliver new business opportunities, interact with clients and industry experts, and meet end buyers faceto-face.
Side Events have become an important complement to the core programme International Trade Fair is not only known for its diverse offer, but also for a wide range of side events. In eight days there were over a hundred professional side events, consultations, meetings, roundtables and lectures which were prepared in conjunction with domestic and foreign partners among which Slovenian Chamber of Craft and Small Business (OZS) deserves a special mention. Side events are an opportunity for entrepreneurs to meet the government representatives and to acquaint them with the problems they are facing, but above all, to make contacts with new business partners from new markets.
Radič. Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Žbogar introduced new measures to help companies enter foreign markets, and Labour, Family and Social Affairs Minister Ivan Svetlik introduced measures to curb moonlighting. The Development Conference of the Savinja Region held on the last day was attended by the Local Government and Regional Policy Minister Henrik Gjerkeš.
The 43rd MOS was officially opened by the Slovenian Prime Minister Borut Pahor, who on this occasion spoke of positive economic situation, saying that Slovenia has recorded economic growth in the past couple of years despite the crisis. OZS members were less optimistic in their attempt to draw the ministers’ and PM’s attention to the problems Slovenian entrepreneurship and craft were facing. MOS was also visited by the economy minister Darja
In addition to Slovenian public figures from political and economic life, the 43rd MOS was attended by foreign delegations. International business meetings were attended by nearly 200 participants from more than 10 countries. Vojvodina, which has attended the trade fair for the fifth time in a row, has featured nearly 100 companies in the past few years. The trade fair was visited by an entrepreneur delegation from Banja Luka who said they would
come again in 2011 and are convinced that there will be new companies from Serbia to follow as the delegation that came for the weekend showed great interest in cooperation. Both general public and business audience found free financial, environmental and energy advice prepared by exhibitors rather interesting and enlightening. A new side events feature were Advice Centres (three days of free advice) Energija Doma (Energy Home) prepared in conjunction with the Community Website Energija doma (www. energijadoma.si). In three thematically rounded-off days the visitors were able to obtain information from the experts who explained why wood is such a healthy insulation material, which biomass systems are most suitable and efficient, how to finance investments in renewable energy sources, how to purchase “green energy”, how to reduce electricity bills, and what type of energy sources offer the cheapest heating. 43rd MOS lived up to exhibitors' and visitors' expectations Most exhibitors (nearly 80%) rated their presentation as successful or very successful which can also be seen from the answers to the question about their expectations - 70% said that the event lived up to their expectations. The organizers have assessed their performance based on the results of the survey conducted among exhibitors and visitors. Exhibitor satisfaction can be seen from their answers to the question about their expectations - 80 % were satisfied or very satisfied with their performance. It is encouraging to know that the number of exhibitors who were very satisfied with their performance was up by 8% compared to 2009. The fact that 74.8 % of exhibitors said they would attend in 2011 clearly is an indicator of success, while 22% promised to decide in time for the closing date for applications. MOS lived up to 87% of visitors’ expecta-
tions. They attend to view the entire offer and new products and services, which by tradition still remains the main reason for visit. According to them, the biggest advantage of trade fair is innovations and the fact that you can find everything under one roof. We can say with pride that our visitors are very loyal. The share of repeat visitors was 78.6% and 79.2 % are determined to come in 2011.
a high quality offer. We like to boast that the showcased exhibits and well designed and decorated exhibition stands often surpass other European events of this kind. A proof of that are undoubtedly fair awards presented to the winners as due to the high quality and diverse offer it is becoming more and more difficult every year to single out the one product that really stands out among other exhibits.
Another indicator suggesting that the trade fair is a unique opportunity to reach exhibitors and visitors is mass media response, which was extremely good. In addition to home media every year trade show records more foreign media. The event received media coverage from 215 reporters, cameramen, photographers and other media representatives from 101 media houses, 12 foreign mostly from Croatia and Serbia. Altogether, we recorded over 450 press releases in Slovenian and foreign media.
Each trade fair presents a new challenge for the organizers. We are well aware of the fact that we are merely a link between exhibitors and visitors therefore we put their satisfaction first, which will also be our guide in the future. We will review exhibitors’ and visitors’ opinions, take their suggestions into account and follow new trends in different sectors. We know that this is the only way to consolidate the reputation of the largest and most important trade fair and business event in this part of Europe. The fair will undoubtedly help enhance international competitiveness of Slovenian companies, and here we are counting on support from Slovenian Chamber of Craft and Small Business, the ministries and the state.
Nicely decorated exhibition stands with innovations, interesting products and attractive displays are a proof that the 43rd International Trade Fair (MOS) delivered
