DIGITAL ACCESS
TO MUSIC
“Digital download has put genuine power into the hand of music lovers across the globe
S
traightforward, almost instant digital access to music has arrived. Digitally downloading tunes is a compelling way for consumers to gain access to the music they want to hear. Information on http://www.dropcards.com/learnmore/ reveals that Dropcards is the leading provider of mix download card solutions for the industry of amusement or recreation. Musicians, music studios, Fortune 500 companies, movie studios and authors use them to sell access to their creative products. Digital download has put genuine power into the hand of music lovers across the globe. Music and musicians now meet across the table through digital downloads of popular music. With Dropcards, music mavens have the power to decide what they are going to do with the music they purchase through this medium. This method of distribution makes the music enjoyment experience quicker. As a form of distribution digital downloads spell access to the music through the use of a card with an access code that opens the portals to beats and other favored music tunes. One hallmark of the Dropcard method of distribution is that it will turn the current method of music distribution on it's head and award listeners with better control of their music enjoyment experience. It takes away the need for CDs and other physical music tools. In business since 2004, Dropcards is listed as the leaders of the download card market. This can be a revenue stream that musicians can use to sell their music to consumers. In fact, Beyonce used this method exclusively to release a single in late 2013 and it sold millions in record time. Digital downloads are another way of access to music that is now on the table. Many are picking this option over more traditional means of obtaining music.

SPOTLIGHT
Olivia Gilmore
When I sing I put everything into it, very passionate.
Briefly explain the history behind Olivia Gilmore. I was born and raised in Hollis NY to a family comprised of mostly musicians. From what I've been told I've been singing from the time I could speak. I was always involved in music as a child from singing in choirs to recording jingles in my father's home studio... I dabbled a little with singing growing up, did a few hooks for a few local rappers, even performed live Jazz at P Diddy's restaurant Justin's and referenced tracks for a friend of the family and sang in church, however I never put much thought into pursuing a musical career until 2012 when I released my debut single 'Over It'. Before the music, I was working at a bank before that a hair dresser... I don't know if it was that I was too busy or just uninterested in being an artist altogether. How did you stumble into your craft? It's funny you should use the word stumble, because that is actually how it happened. Lol. My last job was working as a bank teller/ customer service rep and I was injured on the job. After sustaining multiple injuries while home convalescing I was rendered legally disabled. It became eminent that singing is my only option. I no longer have the physical capacity to work a regular 9-5, and actually even performing is difficult for me at times physically, but my passion is fuel enough to keep me going. Who were some of your influences? Musically I have
a lot of influences, including R&B artists Faith Evans who I listened to over and over and over growing up as well as Mary J, SWV, really anyone who was making music in the 90's and also gospel artist Karen Clarke Sheard. When my dad found out that I wanted to sing, he gave me her CD 'Finally' and told me to listen to it and I studied it day and night until I could sing every lick just like her. I didn't want to be like her, but this helped me develop vocal agility. One of my absolute favorite artists is Ray Charles for many reasons. I love the sound of his voice, his delivery& his style of writing. I love that he took his pain and made it into glorious music. I love that he didn't limit himself to just one genre... I could go on about him forever... but I won't! Lol Other influences include bands like the manhattans & the whispers... Betty Wright, Chaka Khan, Whitney... Sarah Vaughan, Etta James... really any music I hear... I'm like a sponge and there are too many influences for me to list em all, so I'll just stop here. Describe your style of music? My style of music is soulful and heartfelt! When I sing I put everything into it, very passionate. For the most part I sing R&B but not that new pop version; I often get compared to artists of the 90's. I've been told I sound like literally everybody, from Whitney to Mary J Blige, to Mariah... They've all influenced me in some way but honestly I think my voice in unique and disPODTALk. MAGAZINE | 11
tinct. My music itself is in a bit of an evolution stage. What was the process behind creating "Matrix?" I understand that it's based on your own experiences. Care to discuss... I wrote (and co-produced with Kadeem Nichols) this song after finding out that someone that I was seriously involved with was also seriously involved with someone else unbeknownst to me. I really dug deep into my feelings and wrote this song as candidly as I could in hopes of not only sharing my experience but also encouraging the listener to face their reality head on and decide to let go of whatever may feel good but isn't necessarily good for them no matter how difficult, uncomfortable or lonely it may be! What can your fans expect to see in the future? In the future, fans can always expect good quality music from me. I'll always write about whatever I'm passionate about, never commercial. Like Ray Charles, I may dabble in other genres outside of R&B. I want to sing a little Rock, Jazz, and Gospel... but whatever it is, it will be heartfelt! Where can they find your music? My music can be found primarily on sound cloud.com/ olivia-gilmore (for free) also on MsOliviaGilmore.com on youtube.com/MsOliviaGilmore and also if you like my Facebook page www.facebook. com/Ms.OliviaGilmore things will be posted Anything else you would like to add? Not that I can think of right now. I'd just like to thank you for interviewing me! I really appreciate it :)

The Role of Women in History Words by Jadelette
W
omen have played many important roles throughout history. The roles women have taken on, though often overlooked by history books in favour of the achievements of their male counterparts, vary greatly depending on the specific period and the social class of the women in question. This article aims to provide a brief overview of some of the most significant contributions made by women throughout world history. For a substantial portion of history, the main role allocated to women was that of a wife and mother: caregiver and homemaker. It is easy to dismiss this as unimportant, but in the pre-industrial era, running a household was incredibly demanding work. Women were expected to provide food, not only through cooking and baking the end products to be placed on the table, but by undertaking every step in procuring ingredients from the very beginning of the process. This meant milking cattle, churning cheese, plucking chickens, and much more. On top of this, they were to rear children, take care of everything for their husband, craft household items, and even take a hand in their husband’s business. In
days without machinery, every task we view as a tiring chore today would have been ten times more time-consuming and difficult. In ancient civilizations, right through medieval times, women’s role as producers of cloth was highly prized. That the word wife is derived from the Saxon word meaning weaver clearly illustrates the import that was placed on such activity. In the same time periods, women were also expected to have knowledge of medicinal treatments, acting as doctors to their family and the male warriors in their community. Women played an important role in religious life, in the Ancient Egypt, and the Greek and Roman empires. They served as priestesses and took part in rituals that were exclusive to their gender. As Christianity spread in the West, women were often actively involved in the work of conversion. Notable cases are Queen Clothilde of the Franks and Queen Bertha of Kent, who both successfully converted the pagan Kings to whom they were married. Nuns were also extremely influential and often held great power. Worth mentioning are Catherine of Sienna, who influenced the actions of two Popes; Hildegard of Bigen, who became an accomplished scholar, physician and musician; and Saint Theresa of Avila, who was a scholar in the 16th century. Women born into the aris-
tocracy of many civilizations would often find themselves in a position of power. This may be in the form of running a family estate in the absence of their husband, or even as an heiress. Women of royal blood even ruled countries, sometimes as Regent for a son or nephew who was too young to ascend to the throne, and other times in their own right. Some of the most distinguished and impressive Queens ever to have ruled include female Pharaoh Hatshepsut, Cleopatra, China’s Empress Wu, Isabella of Spain, Queen Elizabeth the First of England, and Catherine the Great – to name but a few. Other women are remembered for their might and cunning in the role of warrior, such as Boudicca, Queen of Iceni; Aethelflaed, Lady of the Mercians; Joan of Arc; and Rani Lakshmibai, the Queen of Jhansi who fought against the British during the Indian Mutiny. Throughout the 19th century, women played a vital role in guiding social reform. Elizabeth Fry was heavily involved in the reform of English prisons, while Florence Nightingale completely overhauled how hospitals were run and virtually created the profession of nursing as it is thought of today. Clara Barton founded the American Red Cross, and Jane Addams set up the Settlement house movement, also in this time period. One of the greatest areas of political
reform of the 19th century that saw influential women rise to the fore was the abolition of slavery in the US. The Grimke sisters were the first female anti-slavery lecturers to practice in the US, and they paved the way for the likes of Lucy Stone, Elizabeth Candy Stanton and Susan B Anthony, who were all active participants in both the anti-slavery movement and later the women’s rights movement; Harriet Tubman, an escaped slave who risked everything time and again to return south and free others; and Harriet Beecher Stow – author of the phenomenally powerful novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Women played a crucial role during the all the major wars: the Revolutionary War, The Civil War, and World Wars I and II. When the men went off to fight, women stepped up to fill their jobs, nurse the wounded, act as spies and informants, and even to join the war effort on the front line by disguising themselves as men. The 20th century saw the Suffragette movement win the right to vote for women, and since then numerous women have risen to the top of the political spectrum. Formidable political leaders include Margret Thatcher, the first female Prime Minister of the UK; Golda Meir, fourth Prime Minister of Israel; and Indira Ghandi, third Prime Minister of India. The role of women in societies throughout the world is continuing to develop and evolve. Whatever the future hold, it is sure that influential women will always have a part to play.
produce a soulful sound coming from where she’s from. I am convinced that soul music is back. Other artist such as Quadron, Phillip Owusu and others who reside in other parts of the world are reinventing soul and introducing it back. Sure we can categorize her with other great artist that came before her and we can also say that her sound is truly her own and not a mimic of her influences. You can hear how she reworked a few popular songs on her free EP “The Rendition.” Marie Dahlstrom is a star in the making.

A
s a big fan of good music and just when we thought it was over, soul music is making a comeback. Lately it has been hard for me to turn on and tune into one of
the local contemporary radio stations here in my hometown of Cleveland, Ohio. Sure they may label themselves as the adult contemporary but should that label change. The music being produced now days is watered down with sexual content that can easily be considered explicit. What happened to radio? Where is the good music that deserves radio play? These questions can easily be answered with “it’s not popular.” I left radio and started surfing the internet for material. I stumbled across Emmavie, a UK based singer, songwriter and producer who had released material that really caught my attention. I began to browse through her soundcloud page and listened to a Scandinavian born soul singer Marie Dahlstrom tune that was produced by Emmavie. The song immediately grabbed my attention. Who would have thought this young lady would
Gloom-EP (2014) This EP has a couple of standout tracks that grabs your full attention. Those tracks that did it for me on this EP were “My Everything” and “I.O.T.” Both of these tracks are on repeat. “My Everything” is pretty much a story of holding on to love, something we all have experienced once in our life. The overall EP is something to add to your catalog. You will without a doubt enjoy it….

uff Graft is a great jazzy tribute to the late and great producer J Dilla. Many have contributed their talents to pay tribute to one of the great Hip Hop producers; Milleneum Jazz is doing just that with their tribute. The title is a spinoff of J Dilla’s 2007 “Ruff Draft” album. Ruff Graft embodies Millineum Jazz in house production crew made up of talent from various parts of the globe. You will hear many styles coming together to create this jazzy filled beat-tape. If you are a true fan of Dilla and of jazzy expressions, this is that album to get.
abriel Garzon-Montano is a singer, composer, multi-instrumentalist and a native New Yorker who had released his debut EP, “Bishouné: Alma Del Huila.” I didn’t know what to expect from this artist. I had stumbled across Gabriel by mere accident in search of new material. Once I hit play, I was hooked onto the soothing melodic sounds of each track. My favorites are” 6 8” and “Pour Maman. MORE REVIEWS Christon Gray School of Roses
I am always on the search for good music. When I came across this young artist from my home state, I was blown away by what is being produced in our states capital of Columbus, Ohio. His music is a true blend of jazz, soul and gospel. Each track introduces the spiritual side of Christon that leads right into the contemporary soul sound. His latest release, “School of Roses” is a primary example of the many styles Christon has to offer, from rap, to jazz, to soul and a little pop. You can’t go wrong with this album.
Gene NobleJ Rebirth of Gene
If you are going through something in and with love, this album paints the picture of life’s situations. Gene Noble pours out his soul and heart into each track of personal experiences and those that you may be facing. Each track delivers extreme emotion that everyone can relate to like “Vice,” “All I Give a F**k About” and “Still Here.” If you are trying to make sense of it all, pop this album in, you can’t go wrong.
Hayley Kiyoko A Belle to Remember
This singer, songwriter and actress took the unconventional route to releasing her debut album “a Belle to Remember.” While most artists seek out major record deals, Hayley was able to successfully fund her release through funding platform Pledge Music. This album is full of energy. It caters to both the young and adult listners

Ledisi
The Truth Ledisi has hit us with another gem, “The Truth.” This album has the same intensity that she had delivered in “Pieces of Me.” Her voice is strong and capable of setting the tone and the mood if need be. I have been a fan of Ledisi for some time and “The Truth” is yet another piece of art created by a super star singer. My favorites on this album are the title track “The Truth” and “Lose Control.” This album is surely for the grown folks. So if you want to get your grown up swag on, this is that album.
Moonchild Please Rewind
Hitting the scene with their debut album “Be free” in 2011, Moonchild is back with another banger “Please Rewind.” On this album, Moonchild sticks to their formula of creating art through sound. The lead singer Amber without any flaw fills out each track with her soothing and melodic voice. Not comparing her style to others but her flow reminds me of the lead singer of Quadron, Coco O. Both singers compliment their band and production team perfectly. These college friends and band members made the right choice to work together collectively to create and deliver to the masses great music.
Adrian Marcel 7 Days of Weak
Oakland native Adrian Marcel teams up with fellow Oakland native Raphael Saadiq on 7 Days of Weak. Marcel’s sound easily reminds me of El DeBarge and his falsetto voice. Marcel is bringing back that falsetto “swag.” 7 Days of Weak is Marcel’s true expression of his gift and what he has to offer to his growing fans.
Rashad
Ohio is still producing great artist. Coming out of Columbus, Ohio, Rashad is showing us what he has to offer musically. This self taught musician is producing a great sound. His sound reminds me of what was being produced in the early 90’s. As you listen to some of his work you will hear that sound incorporated into a few tracks on his “Museum” album that was originally released as a mixtape. He infuses samples from popular R&B groups of the 90’s in such a way he makes it his own but at the same time it has that feel of listening to those old songs and or make you want to pulls those albums out to listen to them. Rashad is back with his latest single “First Move.” Rashad sticks to that same formula that works for him. You can clearly hear sample elements from the Art of Noise, “Moments of Love.” This is a great track and I am eager to hear what’s to come in the future from this artist. You can also go out and purchase Rashad’s “Museum” release available for immediate download on iTunes. If you are a true fan such as myself, you would want to add it to your collection.

DE LA SOUL
O
ver 20 plus years in the rap game, these guys are still rocking mics all over the country. Since 1989 I’ve been an avid follower of this group the day they released “3 Feet High and Rising.” When that release first hit the record store, I was like a kid in the candy store eager to make a purchase. When I did, I played that cassette nonstop. I don’t think I ever felt that eager to buy music as I did back in the 80’s. De La Soul contributed to that alternative rap style that is popular today with most artists setting new standards to the world of hip hop. Although most of the material today is contributed to a trend that has no true substance of hip hop with content that is sexual, promoting drug sale and getting “paper.” Don’t get me wrong, there are groups out there trying to bring that true hip hop back but that type of rap music is not seeing the light of day as it did back in the day. Let’s give credit to those positive groups of the 80’s for keeping true hip hop alive. De La Soul is at the top of my list for keeping true hip hop alive with past and present releases. Just this year De La Soul offered their full catalog for free to its fans in honor of “3 Feet High and Rising” celebrating 25 years. With the free material, De La Soul added other free treats of unreleased material that featured unlicensed samples that could not be sold. Along with those freebies, De La Soul also released “Smell the D.A.I.S.Y.” mixtape of reworked lyrics of their own material from previous releases in honor of J Dilla produced entirely by J Dilla. As a true fan I am looking forward to their upcoming release “You’re Welcome” scheduled for release sometime this summer.
