NEWS ROUND UP
CHIEF EXECUTIVES COMMENTS WELL, WE now know that although CITB
managed to scrape enough votes to carry consensus and to continue for another few years at least, the picture in Scotland is somewhat different. Both the Scottish Decorators and Scottish Building have decisively voted no to the consensus proposal from CITB and it’s not really a surprise at all. Since last September, both the industries representative bodies have been urging CITB to listen to them regarding both registration of construction apprentices and changes to construction qualifications. They chose not to do so and to go their own way even when told by government to liaise with them and make the required changes. The changes they have imposed will, without doubt, impact on apprentices going forward. The National Councils of Federations give their time freely to better the industry we work in, the tireless work they put in, as I know, is monumental and has to be seen
to be believed, they are rightly appalled by the direction of travel of CITB in a Scottish context. At a recent Pan Industry meeting it was agreed that CITB should be more transparent, more focused on its reason it exists at all (bringing in quality apprentices to the industry) and more accountable for its obvious failures. The appalling way they have treated the registration bodies is without a lesson on how not to do business. It seems to me that CITB once recognised as a force for good and an ally of our industry has, through cost cutting, redundancies and making the reporting lines of Scottish staff report to managers and directors in the south, complicated and unnecessary. I call on CITB to move to a more devolved Scottish CITB, responsible for its income and expenditure, run by a Scottish board for the good of Scottish construction and give our political masters (The Scottish Government) the levers they say they need to improve
the lot of apprentices and importantly our industry in Scotland. The Convention 27th October It’s now October and, this year, the time for the Federation convention. It’s once again being held in the Dalmahoy Hotel and Country Club, Edinburgh. We are starting the day at 9.00 a.m. with the opening of the exhibition and this year we have even more exhibitors. There will be new products on display and a chance to win some prizes. The exhibition this year will continue through lunch and close at 4.00 p.m. The evening Gala Dinner and awards start at 7.00 p.m. sharp and promises to be another great evening so don’t miss it - get the date in your diary and contact the office to arrange your requirements.

NOVUS APPRENTICE APPLICATIONS HIT ALL TIME HIGH Novus Property Solutions is celebrating a record-breaking year for apprenticeships after over 1,500 people applied for the 28 places on offer at the national property maintenance, refurbishment, and new build contractor THE COMPANY’S nationwide search to
find talented people looking to build their careers in the construction sector drew interest from all corners of the UK, with people applying to becoming apprentice joiners, painters and decorators, and general maintenance labourers. Novus, which has 30 offices nationwide, selected a shortlist of candidates to take part in the Novus apprentice week, where they participate in team-building activities, met Novus’ current apprentices and were interviewed by the company’s directors. The apprentice week also saw the candidates take part in a community makeover project at The Macari Centre 2

for homeless people in Stoke-on-Trent, undertaking minor repairs, painting the interior and exterior, and constructing a new purpose-built smoking shelter. Commenting on the volume of applicants, the company’s managing director, Neil Hand, who started his Novus career as an apprentice, said: “Novus has a strong record of attracting apprentices, and we have a retention rate of 91 per cent for those we take on. To have 53 applicants for every opening this year demonstrates that apprenticeships are still an attractive option for people wanting to start their career. “I know first-hand how transformative the Novus apprenticeship programme can
be, and I’m confident that many of the successful candidates will go on to have long and illustrious careers with us.” Successful candidates will enroll for their college course in September, and will be assigned a dedicated mentor to guide them throughout their training and college-based learning. While on site, apprentices will work alongside qualified tradespeople and benefit from their expertise, continuing a tradition that Novus has proudly maintained for more than 75 years. TOP APPRENTICE DECORATORS PREPARE TO DO BATTLE
THE COMPETITION to find the UK’s Crown Trade
Apprentice Decorator of the Year is heating up as the eight finalists have been revealed. The talented competitors were judged the nation’s most promising industry apprentices after competing against hundreds of entrants in tough individual heats held at colleges across the country earlier this year. Now, the eight will go on to compete at the prestigious Skills Show, at Birmingham’s NEC from November 16-18, with a £1,000 first prize at stake. The finalists are: Aiden Dearie of City Building Glasgow, Callum Bonner of Forth Valley College of Further and Higher Education, Declan Collins of Dundee and Angus College, Oliver Takhar of Bath College, Patrick Dinham of Newcastle College, Philip Orme of City College Plymouth, Lewys Rawlings of Coleg Cambria and Thomas Pawlowski of West Suffolk College. The contest, in association with the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), is the longest running showcase of talent for up-and-coming painters and decorators and this year celebrates its 4
DECORATING MATTERS
38th anniversary. Debbie Orr, Marketing Manager for Crown Trade, said: “As a business, we are committed to supporting the training and education of the next generation of painting and decorating professionals “This is a competition which touches the lives of hundreds of people at the start of their careers, encourages them to strive for excellence in their craft and reach the highest standards. “It’s a great opportunity for competitors to show just how well they’ve mastered the skills and techniques required by today’s professionals.” As well as scooping the £1,000 top prize and title of Crown Trade Apprentice Decorator of the Year, the overall winner will also be considered for a place in Squad UK at the international Euro Skills 2018 championships in Budapest. The Apprentice Decorator of the Year competition is a key part of Crown Trade’s ongoing programme to help address a skills gap which has emerged within the industry.
Figures released by the Construction Industry Training Broad revealed that more than 13,000 painters and decorators will be needed before 2018 to meet growing demand. Debbie added: “We understand the importance of developing the next generation of industry professionals. It will be a major focus for the sector over the coming years and it’s something we’ve felt passionately about for decades. “We’ve run the Crown Trade Apprentice Decorator of the Year competition for 38 years and it’s a commitment that sees us provide staffing, support and products for the regional heats and final. “It’s a contest that puts the skills of people carving out a career in the industry under the spotlight and it’s hugely rewarding to see the effort and commitment they put in.” For more details of the Crown Trade Apprentice Decorator of the Year competition and the Skills Show, visit www.findafuture.org.uk/the-skills-show

seaweed-infused range at Scottish Decorators’ Federation Exhibition Inspired by the beauty and elemental nature of the Isle of Skye, this new paint company will be showcasing their unique seaweed infused range at the Scottish Decorators’ Federation Exhibition for the first time. It was Skye’s wild Hebridean weather that created the need for its super-durable performance, and its awesome landscape that inspired the palette of 32 shades. In the trade for over 20 years, company founder, Alisdair Campbell, says it was the challenging weather of the north-west Highlands that sparked the idea; using his experience and knowledge he firstly developed a masonry paint that would withstand the harsh climate. “With the knowledge that our paint works here, we know it works anywhere,” says Alasdair. So why add seaweed? It’s actually a brilliant natural thickening
agent - common in marine paint but not known to have been used in a household range before – making Isle of Skye Paints easy to apply and providing excellent even coverage. With over 400 miles of coastline it’s certainly an abundant local ingredient. A full water-based range - Skye Matt, Skye Durable, Skye Satin, Exterior Masonry and Exterior Eggshell - was then developed and tested on Skye, making it easy to bring the Spirit of Skye into your projects. For more information on this premium quality, yet affordable range visit us at the Scottish Decorators’ Federation Exhibition or www. isleofskyepaintcompany.co.uk

NEWS ROUND UP SCOTTISH PAINTER GOES FOR GLOBAL GLORY Jordan from Peeblesshire could be World Number 1 THE UK’S best young painter and decorator is going for global glory having been selected for Team UK at the WorldSkills Finals in Abu Dhabi. Former apprentice Jordan Charters, from West Linton, Peeblesshire, overcame the final hurdle at a grueling four-day selection process in Manchester back in March of this year. Jordan, who attends Edinburgh College and works for his dad’s business, George Charters, has been in training around the clock until the WorldSkills Finals, which take place from 14 to 19 October in Abu Dhabi. Jordan is being trained and mentored for the Competition by Peter Walters, a lecturer at Stoke-on-Trent College and Mark Nevin, of Nevin of Edinburgh. He joins the nation’s elite young skilled women and men have been selected to go for gold against the rest of the World – in a litmus test for the future of our economy. Successful super-talented Team UK members have beaten off the challenge from thousands of fellow and former apprentices and students to represent the UK at the WorldSkills Finals in Abu Dhabi this October (14 - 19). The two-year (or more) process has seen competitors win regional heats, a national final, European finals and last month jump the final hurdle reaching the most testing international standards at a team selection showdown. 34 talented skilled professionals will continue to undergo a rigorous regime of Olympic style training in preparation for the
most intense week of competition imaginable. Skills represented, range from Aircraft Maintenance and Mechanical Engineering through to Restaurant Service and Cyber Security. WorldSkills UK, which helps young people ‘Go Further, Faster’, is spearheading the use of competition in the workplace, training centres, schools and colleges to inspire the next generation and fill the skills gap. WorldSkills UK, funded and supported by the DfE, devolved governments and commercial partners, utilises revolutionary training techniques usually associated with elite sporting teams, athletes and competitors. Performance coaches and skills experts spend hundreds of hours honing their skills and drawing upon physical, mental and holistic methodology to produce optimum achievement
under the most testing ‘pressure cooker’ conditions. WorldSkills Finals are held every two years when over a thousand competitors from more than seventy countries gather for four days of competition.

This year’s final is seen as an important litmus test as to how well the UK will fare post Brexit with the rest of the World. Homegrown skills will become ever more important as industry seeks to reduce reliance on workers from the EU. In 2015 at the most recent WorldSkills Finals, held in Såo Paulo, Team UK finished overall seventh in the medal table, ahead of France and Germany - bringing home an impressive haul of medals including three gold, four silver, two bronze and twenty three medallions of excellence. 18 DECORATING MATTERS

● ● ● WATER-BASED TECHNOLOGY
JOHNSTONE’S TRADE HOSTS INDUSTRY FIRST FACEBOOK LIVE Q+A ON WATER-BASED TECHNOLOGY As technological developments continue to drive the industry forward, Johnstone’s Trade recently allowed unrestricted access to its technical experts on as part of an industry first Facebook Live event BELOW, Marketing Manager at Johnstone’s Trade, Richard Mazurkiewicz, provides a summary of the key questions raised and responses from the Johnstone’s Trade Technical Team. At Johnstone’s Trade, we understand that the need to collaborate and innovate with the professionals in the industry is critical, and Facebook Live has provided a great platform and opportunity to do just this. In our first Facebook Live panel event, we had a fantastic response and the range of questions submitted was excellent. We looked at interesting topics such as the development of water-based technology in recent years, the technical differences between solvent-based and water-based products, and the ever-popular subject of brush management. Below, we recap some of the most interesting questions and answers provided by our expert Technical Team. What are the main benefits of water-based technology? Water-based products are low odour, quick drying, easy to use and have a great sheen level, making it a favourite product choice for a lot of professional painters and decorators. It means projects can be completed quickly, and in an industry where time is money, that’s a key benefit – especially as 20 DECORATING MATTERS
customers also appreciate a speedy turn around with a fantastic finish. Are Johnstone’s Trade Aqua products really water-based coatings? The Aqua products are hybrids, meaning they take all the benefits of solvent-based products, such as ease of application, flow and great finish, while integrating these with the cleaner, better for the environment elements of waterbased systems. On a chemical level, there is a fundamental difference that’s down to the resin used. Oil-based products predominantly use alkyd resin, which is known for being tougher than the resin used in traditional water-based systems.
The Johnstone’s Trade Aqua products have the best of both worlds; they incorporate the use of traditional alkyd resin, but in a water-based system.
back to the old adage that the paints are only as good as the substrate they’re going on to. If the preparation is right, there shouldn’t be any durability issues.
In comparison with oil-based paint, is water-based paint as durable? This is a really common question, and water-based technology has evolved dramatically from when it was first launched into the UK marketplace. Trade professionals might have had a poor experience with this technology years ago, but it’s a completely different experience now. Water-based paints are as durable as solventbased products, but it goes
Do water-based products give the same finish as oil-based products? We’re advocates in terms of the application and the ultimate finish of water-based products. With Johnstone’s Trade’s Aqua system, application of the products plays a big part in the finish you achieve. Never be afraid of putting too much product on to a surface – Aqua products behave totally differently to solvent-based paints and slightly different application techniques
can be key to getting the best finish for both the undercoat and top coats. Many painters tell us that they apply the Johnstone’s Trade Aqua Gloss over traditional acrylic primer or undercoats. This will affect the finish you achieve and you possibly won’t get the finish you might have been expecting. Aqua Gloss needs to be applied on top of the Aqua Undercoat, which provides a far better film build that will reflect on the finish. At Johnstone’s Trade, we are dedicated to educating the industry on how to use these products most effectively, and instilling the mindset about working differently to get the best out of them. Is there a method for covering oil-based surfaces with waterbased products? Any painter and decorator knows that thorough preparation of any surface is always vital, and this is no different when using water-based products. It should be cleaned, any grease removed and the surface
rubbed down. No matter what the surface is coated in, that should be standard practice. Why do surfaces yellow after using water-based products? The alkyd resins in traditional products have always been prone to yellowing after extended periods of time, but the science behind putting the alkyd resin in our hybrid water-based systems does actually help to reduce the rate at which yellowing occurs. That said, there’s no such thing as a non-yellowing product – it’s down to unavoidable factors such as a lack of UV light in areas that are not exposed to natural sunlight, for example. At Johnstone’s Trade, we’re confident that when they’re applied in the most suitable locations, Aqua products will actually be prone to less yellowing than traditional solvent-based products. How should I clean my brushes when using water-based products? Using fully synthetic brushes designed for water-based products
is the best starting point. If you’re leaving a brush inactive for any amount of time, it’s really important to ensure the brush is left standing in paint up to the ferrule and that you clean the brush against the edge of the can before using again. We know how quickly paint can dry and unfortunately it will do the same on brushes if they’re left exposed to the air sometimes even for the shortest length of time – that’s the same whether the product is oil or water-based. Try using clean spirit first to soften them, wash them with soap and cold water – washing up liquid is a good tip - then rinse out the brushes with cold water. We find that helps to keep the bristles soft. Why are we seeing an increase in the use of spray technology with water-based products? People have been using spray technology in other countries for year and its now gradually coming
over to the UK. It’s a different methodology that has its own benefits – it’s not as messy as it used to be and you can paint a door in seconds, rather than minutes. The coverage is fantastic, and we’d certainly recommend testing out spray technology so you can see the results for yourself. The fact that we held this Q & A on Facebook Live during lunchtime was a huge success. The voice of the customer is fundamental to the success of the industry and therefore should be listened to and acted upon by brands that are driven by customer insight. If you have a topic in mind you’d like discussed, or a question you want answered, get in touch with the experts via the Johnstone’s Trade Facebook page. ● ● ● DAMP PROOFING
FOUR-STEP SOLUTION FOR PENETRATING DAMP A new CPD seminar created by Safeguard Europe – the UK’s leading specialist in damp-proofing and waterproofing technology – sets out four steps to help architects, builders and other specifiers to deal with both the causes of penetrating damp and the factors which can exacerbate the problem. There are many reasons why rainwater can penetrate masonry walls: from porous Victorian bricks to unfilled perpends. And there are an equal number of issues that can make the problem worse, including poor maintenance of gutters, bad detailing and building alterations. The four steps, explained in detail during the seminar Dealing with Penetrating Damp, are: assessing rainwater routes and exacerbating factors; blocking the primary paths for water penetration; controlling the exacerbating factors; and installing back-up in the form of a dampresistant internal system. “It may be relatively simple to spot the pathways for rainwater, such as missing mortar or cracks, but it’s also important to look at the wider picture to work out why rainwater is penetrating at certain points,” says Safeguard director Hudson Lambert, who has illustrated the seminar with dozens of photos, as well as diagrams and CGIs. In helping professionals to meet their duty to continue learning and self-development, Safeguard’s twohour long seminar also provides an update on some of the latest solutions and product types on the market. Companies such as Safeguard invest a significant amount in R&D which enables them to create new products and systems on a regular basis. Penetrating damp can be a problem in cavity walls as well as 22 DECORATING MATTERS
in single-skin ones, an issue that receives its own section in the CPD. Although one of the functions of a cavity is to help prevent the penetration of precipitation, the introduction of insulation, as well as shoddy workmanship, can mean that this wall type suffers from penetrating damp too. As well as causing unsightly internal staining and an unpleasant smell, penetrating damp has various negative impacts on a building and its inhabitants. Damp in homes is an acknowledged cause and aggravator of respiratory problems, particularly for children, older people and those with existing illnesses. Penetrating damp can also lead to the masonry itself deteriorating. The binder in the mortar between bricks may wash away, wall ties could corrode, expand and cause cracking, freeze-thaw action will also increase damage. Damp homes are also less energy efficient than dry ones. An English Heritage Study found that the thermal conductivity of wet bricks is 1.5 to three times higher than dry ones. There are a surprising number of routes that rainwater can find through masonry, whether through defects or through the material itself. When looking for pathways, there are many types of defect that should be investigated including pointing, cracks, corroded wall ties, defective render and damaged seals around openings. Some types of masonry, such as limestone or sandstone, can be porous as can some mortars. Some bricks can be far more porous than others; for example ‘underfired bricks’, inferior quality bricks which were kilned at lower temperatures and sometimes used for housing in Victorian times to cut costs. The CPD, which is delivered in client offices, walks attendees
through all the issues above and considers how each can be treated. It also addresses exacerbating factors including defective guttering and downpipes, missing cills, poorly-designed details, the aspect of the building and the use of non-breathable coatings. The seminar highlights some of the problems masonry paints and coatings can cause and explains why silicon resin masonry paints offer a better solution than traditional masonry paints as they allow any moisture that gets behind the paint film to dry out. When it comes to secondary protection, the CPD looks at options for internal walls and examines the merits of each.
Impermeable membranes or tanking, renovation plasters and hybrid plasterboard systems all come under the spotlight. Though specifiers must be knowledgeable about all the forms of damp, it is important to observe that penetrating damp often co-exists with rising damp and condensation. A holistic approach to the treatment of damp tends to give the best results. Safeguard’s qualified and experienced staff can offer technical advice and support to contractors, specifiers and owners on damp-proofing solutions. For more info visit www.safeguardeurope.com

WAGNER: CONTROL PRO 350 EXTRA Compact Airless-System with up to 55% less over-spray THE TYPICAL airless high-pressure application for coating is still considered merely for professional painters, decorators and people working in construction. Professionals from other crafts rather do not use these devices because of the high pressure. This might change now: The new user-friendly High Efficiency Airless technology by Wagner, in short HEA, makes sure that the spray pistol is much more controllable and overspray is reduced by up to 55%. Within their professional range, surface finishing expert Wagner now offer a spraying machine that is equipped with the new HEA technology: ControlPro 350 Extra. With HEA, particularly beginners in mechanical coating and occasional users will produce surfaces like trained professionals. By means of an innovative tip design and a very efficient pump the ground-breaking technology enables the user to spray-coat with reduced pressure and maximum control – resulting in a softer spray pattern and up to 55% less overspray, compared to conventional airless technology. Especially when used indoors, there are benefits: less effort to cover up the surroundings. And less over-spray also means more efficient usage of material, since less paint is wasted when spraying.
ControlPro 350 Extra: coating walls
ControlPro 350 Extra: finishing metal Ideal handling Due to the lower pressure, between 50 and 150 bars, the material exits with less speed. Users gain more control over how they coat, and make fewer mistakes when applying. Further advantages: You can use the spray gun with less blowback, and you need less pull-off force to apply material.
Furthermore, ergonomics of the spray gun have been improved. All this contributes to fatigue-proof application. HEA – how it works Two components are at the core of the new low-pressure technology: Right in front of the spray diffuser tip (Finish-Tip) Wagner has mounted the Pre-Tip in order to diffuse the material in the same quantity and with the same speed as conventional airless devices do. A softer spray jet, better opacity when layers are overlapping and less edges are the result of this special layout. There is no need for additional finishing, the surface quality is perfect. The second component is the pump technology: Compared to conventional air-less technology pressure is reduced. However, the amount of material pass-ing through the tip remains the same. Suitable for numerous applications ControlPro 350 Extra is the ideal tool for beginners in professional mechanical coating. The compact HEA airless device is suitable for small-sized projects. It is already profitable for projects of about 50 square metres, and cost-effective even when used sporadically. Users benefit from all the advantages of HEA technology.

What´s handy on site: material can be drawn directly from the container. This ensures a quick and clean job. ControlPro 350 Extra is provided with eight HEA Tips in different sizes. They can be employed for numerous applications using paints, varnishes and stains. Due to the lower pressure the tip is less strained and therefore lasts longer.

NO SACRIFICE There’s a growing interest in environmentally friendly paints, but how do they perform? Colin Jones, Technical Sales Adviser at Earthborn, says you don’t have to sacrifice quality or looks for environmental benefits. Why use environmentally friendly paints? Conventional, acrylic based paints contain two potentially harmful components: volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and acrylic softeners. These toxic ingredients contribute to greenhouse gases and groundwater pollution. For decorators and building occupants, they can cause chest complaints and aggravate allergies. Acrylic based paints can also damage walls. They prevent a wall from breathing, which leads to moisture damage such as blown plaster. To prevent harming the environment, your health and the fabric of a building, look for paints made without oils or acrylics. It is now possible to find environmentally paints that perform as well as, if not better than, conventional paints. What to look for The easiest way to ensure you’re using environmentally sound paint is to check that it is EU Ecolabel approved. For interior paints, also seek SKA approval, the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors’

Dunlop Deep Filling Compound is perfect for filling large holes and damage up to 80mm thick and can be cut and shaped after 45 minutes. Dry and paintable after two hours, it dries evenly at any thickness. Fibre Reinforced Smoothing & Filling Compound is specifically formulated for areas at risk of damp or water ingress whether internally or externally. This is because it is water permeable and holds together due to the use of microfibres in its formulation. Dunlop’s High Bond Renovation Filler is designed for use when smoothing Artex and other textured finishes. It can be used up to 10mm thick and its non-shrink formula provides an improved background for painting. High Bond can be smoothed with a sponge, eliminating the need for sanding. The Dunlop team will also be demonstrating other products in the range including their popular ready-mixed Lightweight Filler and their non-crack and non-craze decorator’s caulk Flexible Acrylic Filler Debi Boulton, Dunlop Sales and Marketing Manager, said exhibiting at the show was a great
way to meet face-to-face with decorators, contractors, current and potential stockists. “While we’re not the biggest brand on the market, we pride ourselves in providing problemsolving products for professional decorators such as our quick drying fillers and our non-cracking caulk,” she said. “We launched the Pro Décor range to the world of decorating at the Painting and Decorating Show in 2013, so it is an exhibition that we’ve always had great affinity with. “We’re delighted to be returning once again to demonstrate our products and meet old and new friends in the industry!” For more information on Dunlop Pro Décor visit www.dunloptrade.com/decorating

TOUGH JOBS REQUIRE THE BEST TOOLS AVAILABLE WORKING with high-viscosity materials on building sites is extremely challenging, and calls for high-performance machinery. Surface specialist Wagner’s HeavyCoat family is especially designed for this kind of intensive work, and has just welcomed three new members: HeavyCoat 750 E 110v, HeavyCoat 750 E SSP and HeavyCoat 750 G. These compact spraying machines offer steady, consistent performance when applying heavy materials over large areas. They allow users to work quickly, cleanly and efficiently and deliver a long service life, heightened reliability, attractive maintenance costs and low levels of wear and tear. Wagner’s new Hydrastroke technology makes the HeavyCoat 750 E, HeavyCoat 750 E SSP and HeavyCoat 750 G piston pump machines particularly tough, durable and reliable. By directing

air across parts that use hydraulic oil, such as the engine and the oil container, this technology reduces the operating temperature significantly, by up to 14°. That means less wear and tear and an extended service life, with the pump block and spherical head of the new hydraulic cylinder also ensure longer-lasting seals and packages. User-friendly operation and optimised performance With just two controls – pressure regulator and relief valve – these machines are exceptionally simple to use. The one-piece design of the hydraulic cylinder allows the intake system to be aligned precisely and replaced quickly. The hydraulic oil filter is also easy to change. Expanded flow paths mean reduced pressure loss and higher performance. Even with long hoses, perfect surface results can be achieved.
Fully equipped and ready to use With an option for either 230v or 110v electric motors and both with special plunger pumps, the HeavyCoat 750 E (3.1 kW) and HeavyCoat 750 E SSP (4.1 kW) deliver 6 litres per minute, while the petroldriven HeavyCoat 750 G (4.1 kW) can manage 7.6 litres per minute. Maximum operating pressure for all three is 3600 PSI (250 bar). The new HeavyCoat machines come fully operational with unit, high pressure hose, whip end and either an AG 14 or AG 19 airless gun and 2 SpeedTip nozzle (maximum size 0.043”/1.09 mm), they’ll handle even the most demanding challenges. Thoroughly reliable tools, for professional users everywhere. The HeavyCoat 750 E and G also include a deep-seated inlet valve making it easier to draw in highviscosity materials such as flameretardant, corrosion protection, plaster and waterproofing materials directly.
HeavyCoat 750 spraying machines from Wagner, for applying high-viscosity materials cleanly and efficiently.
Direct intake with a large volume hopper Now available with the new connection the heavy Coat 750 series allows all materials to be drawn directly from the large hopper which can easily be removed for a thorough cleaning which makes this powerful high performance unit the perfect tool for heavy coatings and plaster applications.

●●● DUST EXTRACTION
DUST EXTRACTION HAS TO BE TOP PRIORITY FOR THE TRADE Jay Hounsell, a Herts-based carpenter and business owner, explains why he believes dust extraction should be the number one priority for everyone in the trade HE says: “I’ve been working in the carpentry industry for 20-odd years. My new company – The Hertfordshire Kitchen Company – has been going for two years and is successfully placing itself in the market for the supply and installation of quality domestic kitchens in Herts and the surrounding areas. “Working in an environment with dust extraction has massively changed my working practices. I have a lot of Festool kit as its tools and dust extractors work together really well. My work means I’m continually using routers, drills and circular saws with extractors – it makes the working environment more comfortable, cleaner and safer – I hate working in a mess! Feedback from our customers is good – on our Facebook page a number have mentioned how clean and tidy the job has been. “Dust extraction also helps with the longevity of the tools which therefore means less ‘down-time’.” Jay says that the health benefits have to be the number one reason
44 DECORATING MATTERS
for using Festool kit. He says: “I’ve been lucky to never have suffered from asthma or other breathing problems. I believe this is partly attributable to the use of my Festool dust extractors and their excellent integration with their tools. After years of working in carpentry I’m aware of the risks of working without a dust extractor and now use one whenever the tools allow. Kitchen fitting is indoor work so it’s a ‘must’ as it’s not always practical or possible to do all the cutting outside. “I know people that don’t bother using them as they think they’re
mobility of kit when you’re on the job so much easier.” Festool, the leading supplier
not necessary, are too expensive or they’re too big and bulky to wheel in and out of jobs. Some people will also use something unsuitable that’s not up to the job! I think it’s a bit of laziness from some people and lack of awareness about the dangers. “Dust extraction needs to be a top priority for people in the trade. I have two L Class extractors and, since we’ve developed our work with solid surface worktops that produce finer dust, I also have an M Class system now too. I use each one depending on the job. The ‘system’ is what I like about Festool, the systainers enable easy organisation and all stack on top of each other which makes the
of high-end power tools and accessories, including a range of dust extractors, has been speaking with business owners as part of its latest Breathe Easy campaign. The company has teamed up with the British Lung Foundation (BLF) to provide top quality cycling tops, available here: http://bit.ly/ Festooltop, as a fundraising initiative and has asked business owners about their attitudes to dust extraction. According to the British Thoracic Society’s report The Burden of Lung Disease, men aged 20-64 employed in manual occupations are around 14 times more likely to die from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
(COPD) and are nine times more likely to die from tuberculosis. Occupational lung diseases such as mesothelioma – caused by exposure to asbestos fibres – are increasing. Since 1992, mesothelioma deaths have increased by 70% to 1,862. Jon Burcham, Marketing Manager at Festool, said: “Festool has longbeen associated with our excellent dust extraction systems. “Due to heightened levels of understanding about the harm that dust can have on people’s lung health, we can see that dust extraction and the measures tradesmen need to take to protect their lungs will be something that will be legislated about in the near future.” Perfect for mobile use and assembly, the Festool range of safe and robust dust extractors are lightweight and compact, ideal to transport from job to job, saving time for tradespeople. Festool’s dust extractors are suitable for any job from low to high class dust, including general work to anything that is a known carcinogen including lead, cadmium and asbestos. To find the right dust extractor for you, visit www.festool.co.uk for more information.
