Profile

Experienced architect (+4 yrs) with numerous participations in high-profile international design competitions, among those several 1st prizes. Philipp worked in international architecture offices in Germany, China and Denmark where he was part of and led international competitions with an interdisciplinary team. He gained substantial experiences in executing high profile design proposals within schedule. Further he was in charge of the on-site management of an restaurant interior renovation in Copenhagen as well as the design and planning of an off-grid house in the mountains of Colorado, USA, which is currently under construction.

The first measure to be taken is widening the courtyard by cutting into the existing buildings, giving more air and light into the yard. The next step is to continue the neighbouring roof shape and spin it up around the center of the building to form a high building, leaning into the sun. To access the entrances, gaps are cut into the facade to allow acces fromt the streets. #4 cutting into volume to allow acces to courtyard

Residential apartment block, Hernalser Guertel, Vienna How to close the gap in the block without creating another unaccesible and unusable courtyard? How to take advantege of the allowed maximum height without creating a sterile tower that could be placed anywhere? How to create high quality apartments that emphasise on diversity instead of repeatedly stacking one floor on top of each other? The first measure to be taken is the wideing of the inner courtyard by slicing the exsiting buildings, to create a wider yard that allows a green and public use. By expanding the given roof shape and twisting it around the centre, reaching the maximum allowed height we created a building that extends the given geometry and context with maximised usage of the allowed building height. A gap between exsiting and new building mass creates an acces to the inner courtyard that also provides the entrances to the apartments.

On the first two floors a public square invites the public to different activities such as eating, shoppping, etc. It stimulates the exchange and communication between the residents and tries to give the area a more personal feel. The apartments are accesible through a connecting hallway that is facing north. By this circualtion method we provide maximum space for the apartments with a miximised exploitation to daylight. All apartments are douplex apartmetns with partly double height rooms that create a spacious feel. The surrounding buildings are in average not higher than 6 stories but the building code allowes us to build up to 41 meters. This allows the upper apartments a fantastic wide view over Vienna with no neighbouring buildings blocking the view.

Existing situation No clear entrance to MCH

Vision Connecting MCH with surrounding

Concept Using existing circular shape of outstanding buildings also in our design to define an identity of the central area or MCH

Arrival area There is no clear entrance situation today, also the MCH and Boxen are not connected.

Arrival building We are proposing a building volume that connects MCH with Boxen and at the same time respects the existing hotel building to from a central entrance to the entire areal.

Circular hole We create a formal conncetion to the aerial by punching a circular hole into the building. This circle appears two times already on the aerial, with the third one we define a triangle area which is the center of MCH.

Roof becomes landscape The sloping roof creates multiple scenarios, it creates outdoor areas that are protected by a roof (bike parking, smokers area, etc.) and it also allows visitors to climb up the roof and use it as part of the landscape park.

Defining the entrance The north-east corner is the highest point of the building and marks the entrance. The second floor consist of a restaurant with outdoor terrace. The main entrance is accessible from all sides, the parking lots, drop off area and pedestrian walk from the metro.

Transforming the volume The now generated shape gets pushed down on the edge to allow people to acces the center of the circle and also the entrances. Further this transforms the roof into a part of the landscape and it is accessible form the groundfloor and can be used as restaurant terrace or tribune for outdoor events etc.

MCH Messe Center Herning

Urban Agency, Copenhagen Invited competition for a connecting entrance buliding for the Messe Center in Herning, Denmark.

Scenario 1: Agromek The entrance building functions as a showroom for a local farmers market where the shape of the building defines the markets areal and creates an enclosed and defines aerial, perfect for a market of local goods.

Icehockey WM 2018 The building will be done on time for the Icehockey WM 2018. The circular plaza could be transformed into an iceskating ring to attract people to use MCH for more then watching the games.

The brief of this comeptition asked for a solution to have a connecting entrance to both the MCH and Boxen, it should create a strong identity to define a new central access point to the whole aerial. How could we create this strong identity without forcing? How could this buliding be more then jsut a connecting entrance building but giving a variety of functions to reactivate the MCH aerial to attract a diversity of different people for different events, from concerts to sports events, farmers markets to conventions, outdoor concerts and festivals. The MCH aerial has two significant circular buildings, by adding a third circular shape, we create a triangle that defines the center of the MCH, an easy to recognize design feature. By pushing the edges of the building up or down, we create a roof that becomes part of the landscape. This allows the roof to be used as public space as well and further extends the multi useability of the proposed design.

Diverse functions fo the circular plaza During the warmer days, the circular plaza can be used for diverse outdoor events, for example public viewing a sports event, or live braodcast of whats happening inside the Boxen - stadium, etc. The different surface materials invite to lay in the grass, play on soft rubber floor, sit on a wooden bench, enjoy one of the playgrounds, etc.

Colorado House The Colorado house is a private commissioned off grid house in the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, USA. The highlands of Colorado have a harsh climate, long cold winters with heavy snowfall and very hot and sunny summers as well as strong storms are quite common. The location of the house is far from any settlement or city, only accessible through a dirt road and a 4 wheel-drive car. These factors made the construction challenging, it became necessary to use relatively easy to handle materials such as wood which can be transported easily and cut to size on site. Since the building has to withstand the harsh weather conditions, we decided to use a metal cladding which is robust and low maintenance. The house is completely off-grid, electricity is created from photo-voltaic panels, water comes from a tank and the toilet is a composting model from Sweden. One of the main challenges of the design was to make the house functioning in those harsh climate conditions while still provide open views towards the valley. Our approach is to create a simple box with a tilted roof, allowing snow to slide or melt off. The big glass walls which open up to an amazing view into the valley are set back into the volume to use the roof overhang as a shield to reduce the solar heat gain during peak hours. A big veranda is protected by a roof and offers a breathtaking view into the valley.

The entrance to the house is located on the north east corner, facing the road. After entering through a small entrance and technical space, the visitor walks through the kitchen into the living room. The living room is open and bright with views towards the south, overlooking the valley. Even the house is held low-key and simple, basic comfort is still provided by a spacious warm-water shower, a big sink and an odor-free toilet. Facing the south eastern corner, the bedroom is located with a connection to the living room. The bedroom has two big windows framing views into the valley and the neighboring mountains. A client’s request was to provide an open platform as part of the house which is suitable for meditation as well as lounging in the open space, protected by a roof, overlooking the entire valley and neighboring mountains.

Inspired by traditional regional construction principles, the artificial ground is supported by a grid of piles

Hong Kong in mainly built on artificial ground, it has a 150 year history of altering the landscape due to the rough terrain in this area. This made buildable land from early days on very precious and triggered and creative use of surface and space.

The Hammershus Visitor Center in Bornholm is a paradox: at once a noticeable gateway to the historical site, then a hidden landscape tucked into the hill, finally a dominant and proud corniche, reinterpreting the topography in its own way and positioning itself as a response to its neighboring wonder, the defunct castle of Hammershus.

THE HOUSE OF ARTS AND CULTURE

LEBANESE-OMANI CENTRE, BEIRUT, LEBANON JDS Architects How to create a house of culture open to its developing neighborhood and city?

The Beirut house of arts and culture is a simple cube of 40 by 40 by 40 meters placed on a hill site in downtown Beirut. The site is excavated to permit to have the desired connections and avoid unnecessary adjacencies. The sout side is accessible from the road, and so is the north side that acts as main entrance to the building. The required program is within the building envelope and is excavated in 3 places to provide public spaces. The concept of the facility is to let the visitor go through the building in an ‘outdoor’ climate. The working and performance rooms are all climatised to the required level but there’s the option of, especially in tempered envenings, appreciate the real outdoor climate while strolling in and out of the controlled zones. A walk through the new Beirut house of arts and culture: This building is a new breath of culture for Lebanon. Its anticipated arrival has raised expectations from all sides of the Arab and mediterranean world. Rather than articulating our explanation around intricate concepts and historical references we have decided to explain our project in simple words and through architecture and the experience of it: From outside, the building appears as a light concrete monolith, precisely excavated on 3 levels to create 3 specific spaces of public interaction. Firstly the building announces its entrance by opening itself up to the Ahmad el Gabbouri road and towards the city. This large open mouth is the main access and where most people will enter the house of arts & culture. The sober access square will be slightly planted to provide shading for people gathering outside. The façade will stay rather minimal, offering multiple opportunities for media projections at night from the facing square. When entering the house of arts & culture one is immediately taken into its active world of creation: the entrance hall is simple and frames the arrival and departure of 2 main escalators climbing a central piranesian space revealing the various connections for the upper programs. The direction of the escalator matches perfectly a vista to the sky outside the building towards the south. Behind the 2 escalators is the access to the cinema on the left and to the administration on the right. The project tries to assemble the public and the staff into one entity where the people linked to the day to day functions of the building, the administration and the curators and creative responsible are all part of the same ‘family’. The opportunity for the house of arts and culture to be a permeable facility that allows for people to enter and meander around its rich facilities was taken very strongly in this project: the most clear urban take was to create 3 voids in the building interconnected to one another by escalators (this solution could also be replaced by staircases) allowing for the public to visit the facilities very casually. The idea was to try to break out with the pompous attitude that some cultural institutions sometimes have and instead propose a porous building for the people of Beirut.
