“I think my tummy actually looks better now than it did before, if that’s even possible after twins! I found myself on South Beach, absolutely comfortable in my own skin, present and happy with my young boys, while wearing an itty bitty string bikini! Dr. P had done it! I had wanted my body restored, and there I was back in model form!”

In Memoriam
Penny Dillingham
What a friend we’ve lost. The Houston Polo Club has had more than our share of loyal supporters, and more than a few great characters, but none more true for as long as Penny Dillingham. Penny wore many hats around here but was generally considered our mascot—combining institutional memory and passion for the noble beasts that make this sport possible for over 40 years. The memories come in a rush when Penny is remembered, because her spirit was so joyful and her devotion so complete. The quote from the Book of Matthew reminding us that “blessed are the pure at heart because they will see God” describes our Penny perfectly, because while she was not without her idiosyncrasies, hers were always characterized by a concern for others. No one will forget that she had names for all the squirrels at the club, who she would faithfully feed and hold long discussions with. Always a happy face and a kind word even in the midst of trials in her own life. We all want her enthusiasm and kindness in our own legacies. On a personal note, I was one of her squirrels. For years she would show anyone who feigned interest the faded picture of me playing polo in gym shorts and chaps when I had forgotten my whites. Even when she had left the club’s staff in recent years she never once failed to call me on my late mother’s birthday and reminisce about the splendid lady she was. We will find an appropriate memorial on these grounds for Penny, because we want the new faces to ask us who she was. It will be our joy to explain and to honor her with each telling of that important story in the history of the Houston Polo Club. God bless you Penny …we miss you madly. —Paul Hobby

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT On behalf of the Board of Directors and staff, I welcome you to the Houston Polo Club. The Houston Polo Club has a rich history dating back over 90 years to the late 1920s when we opened our first fields at the corner of San Felipe and Post Oak Boulevard. Today, HPC is the largest polo club in the United States, per player. In 2019, 150 HPC and United States Polo Association members took to the field to play the most exhilarating and oldest sport in recorded history. The Houston Polo Club is a not-for-profit organization, and we invest members’ and guest dollars right back into our polo and riding programs here and throughout the southwest United States. Every year we look for new ways to serve the entire riding community and build the Sport of Kings in Texas. Our Polo School and Step Up programs develop new players, from the youngest enthusiasts to new mature players, to join our polo community. Houston Polo Club takes special interest in developing the next generation of polo greats through our dedicated Junior Polo, Interscholastic and Team USPA programs. In addition to polo, the club offers full equestrian facilities, including onsite boarding, as well as English and Hunter Jumper riding lessons for children and adults. Our 26-acre setting provides the perfect environment for horse lovers to develop their riding skills.

To build a strong community, however, a club must offer its players the opportunity to get onto the field and grow their game. Over our spring and fall seasons, we host seven league levels ranging from beginner to 10 goal. In addition to league play, we host national-level USPA tournaments each season. Included are the Southwest Regional Classic, the Masters Cup, the Western Challenge, and the National Youth Tournament Series. This year also marks the 26th year of our ever-growing Women’s Championship Tournament. The Houston Polo Club would like to acknowledge and thank the corporate sponsors that support us throughout the year.Without their generosity, we would not be able to bring you world-class, adrenalinefilled polo. With the support of our sponsors, players, and members, the Houston Polo Club will continue to grow with the goal of being the best polo club in the world. Thank you,

Polo is one of the only sports in the world where men and women play side-by-side at the professional level and are rated on the same handicap scale. Players in North America are assigned goal ratings by the United States Polo Association, based on their experience and skill on the field. Beginners are assigned a B (-1) rating. From there, as skills improve, the players are rated from A (or 0) to the top rating, a 10-goal player. Players above a 2-goal rating are usually professional players.
Each team has four players, whose positions are denoted by the numbers 1–4 on their jerseys.
POSITION 1
POSITION 2
POSITION 3
POSITION 4
The Offensive Leader is the most offensive player, hard and accurate “attacker” of the ball, and the usual scorer. When on defense, they are responsible for the opposition’s position 3 player.
The Offensive Assistant assists position 1 player in the attack or is set up for an attack by position 3.They also have a strong defensive role.
The Tactical Leader is the quarterback and usually the best player on the team. They bridge the defense and the offense and thus must be able to accurately pass the ball upfield to the position 1 and 2 players to set up a strategic attack.
The Main Defense is tasked with defending the team’s goal. After a successful defense, they are responsible for quickly transferring the ball to position 3 or the other offensive players.
Hook: The hook is a defensive play in which one player uses their mallet to “hook” another’s mallet.
Ride off or bump: A player can press their horse’s shoulder into the shoulder of an opposing pony to drive them off the line of the ball.

STANDARDS OF PLAY
SCORING
• Traditional polo fields are 300 yards long and 160 yards wide.
In polo, a goal is scored when the ball is hit between the goalposts at any height. Each time a team scores, both change field direction to mitigate any ground or weather advantages.
• Each polo match consists of 4–6 “chukkers” (periods), each lasting 7:30 minutes. • The umpire starts the game with a throw-in; this is also how play is resumed after a goal.
If the score is tied, the teams will either have a shootout or the teams play sudden-death chukkers. The first team to score in the additional chukkers, wins.
• When a player presses their horse’s shoulder into the shoulder of an opposing player to drive them off the line of the ball, this is called a “bump” or “riding them off.” • The hook is a defensive play in which one player uses their mallet to interfere with an opponent’s swing. The flexibility of the bamboo mallets can make this play very effective. • The most significant rule governing play is “right of way,” as designated by the “line” of the ball. Once the ball is in play, the “line of the ball” is established. The player who is closest to the ball with the narrowest angle has the right of way. Opposing players cannot cross the line too close to the “on-line” player, nor can they approach the player at too sharp an angle, or they risk a foul and subsequent penalty. • Penalties are called by two mounted umpires; a Third Man on the sidelines is the final word on any disagreements between umpires. The severity of the penalty depends on how dangerous the infraction was to the horse or player.
Houston Polo Club has a Polo School that runs twice a year for beginners wanting to experience what it is like on the field. See page 42 for more details!

1 POLO MALLET: Polo mallets have bamboo or plastic shafts that are flexible and can make a complete arc under the pony’s neck or tail.
5 SADDLE AND BREASTPLATE: Polo saddles have little padding under the leg, allowing for maximum movement, and the breastplate prevents the saddle from slipping during the game.
2 HELMET: Hard, lined helmets protect the player’s head from swinging mallets and balls traveling up to 100 mph. 3 BREECHES: Polo players always wear white breeches. 4 RIDING BOOTS AND KNEE PADS: Polo boots and knee pads provide protection for the player’s lower legs and knees.
6 POLO WRAPS: These protective wraps shield the pony’s legs against contact with the ball or other ponies. 7 DRAW REINS AND BRIDLE: This series of leather strapping, metal bit, and supports gives the player steering and stopping control.

WORK OUT LIKE A PRO Workout by Adrian Chavez, Drew Luplow, and Marshall Rosenberg Photos by Monique Brooks
Polo is a grueling sport that makes very unique demands of the body. To help you take your game to the next level, polo pro Drew Luplow and Houston polo player Marshall Rosenberg demonstrate some basic work outs to improve core, strength, and functional mobility to support your polo game at every level.
KETTLEBELL SQUAT
PALLOF PRESS
LEGS, CORE
HIPS, CORE, STABILITY
Level 1: A squat holding a kettlebell will strengthen your legs, glutes and core. If you have ankle mobility problems, the block under your heels allows for a more neutral spine posture and better loading of the legs.
Level 1: Kneel on one knee and hold one end of a resistance band to your chest. Extend your arms, keeping the band taut with shoulders facing forward. Repeat Level 2: Perform the same motion in a deep lunge (split stance).
Level 2: Holding and squeezing a ball between the elbows challenges the core to aid with stability.
32 HOUSTO N P OLO C LUB
STRETCHING: To advance from a totally beginner rider to a novice rider, it’s all about your ability to be flexible. After stretching, you are so much more relaxed and flexible. When you get on the horse, you are not spending the first chukker just trying to warm up.
FRONTAL PLANK GLUTES, CORE, ADDUCTORS
—Marshall Rosenberg, polo player Key exercises: pilates, yoga
DEADBUG WITH REACH CORE
Level 1: Lie on your side and raise yourself onto one elbow, creating a straight line from your heels to the top of your head. Hold. Level 2: In your plank, bend your bottom knee and extend your top arm in front of you, engaging hips and core and strengthening the adductors.
GLUTE BRIDGE GLUTES, CORE, ADDUCTORS
Hold a foam roller between your extended arms and knees, engaging your core. Extend and straighten alternate legs while keeping the foam roller in place.
CARDIO: When I do sprints on a heart monitor, running as fast as I can, my heart rate gets up to 175 beats per minute. In polo, every chukker, my heart rate would be 180–190 beats per minute. I was burning 1600–1700 calories per game in 2 hours. —Drew Luplow, polo pro
Level 1: Lie on your back with your knees bent. Raise your hips to form a straight line and hold. Extending your arms to the ceiling will help maintain a neutral spine. Level 2: Squeeze a ball between your knees to challenge the adductors.
Key exercises off the field: running, squash, racquetball, swimming.

COVER YOUR ASSETS: Five common myths about equine insurance By Shannon Galvin Shannon Galvin has been in the insurance game for about 10 years, a career she didn’t anticipate when she graduated with a Master’s in equine reproduction. Shannon grew up a horse lover and competed in the Hunter Jumper circuit. She travelled around the country, showing and working for trainers before pursuing an education in animal science at Texas A&M. After graduating and working both locally and overseas, she was presented with an interesting opportunity: American National was in search of people with agriculture backgrounds to connect with farm and ranch owners across the state of Texas. Shannon created the Galvin Agency a decade ago, where she and her team specialize in insurance services for the farming and equine community.

Equine insurance can range from personal coverage for a single pony in your yard to a smaller piece of a comprehensive policy that covers a multi-property commercial operation. Finding the right coverage for your polo pony, string, or commercial equine operation starts with asking the right questions and finding someone who understands the different scales and dimensions of equine lifestyle.
MYTH #3 “I don’t need insurance because my basic association membership provides insurance coverage.” Reality: Most of these memberships provide a limit per occurrence for “excess personal equine liability.” The word “excess” means it would pay out after your underlying policy does, for instance, your homeowner’s policy. These memberships do not provide coverage for business or professional liability (for example, if you teach lessons, training, boarding, clinics, etc.).
MYTH #4 “I can’t be sued due to the Texas Equine Activity Liability Act (EALA).”
MYTH #1 “I can’t be sued because my horse is kept at a boarding facility.” Reality: Your risk is the same no matter where your horse is—at a boarding facility, at the trainers, or even at a horseshow. For example: your horse gets loose and runs into the road causing an automobile accident resulting in property damage and injury to the driver. You, as the horse owner, and the boarding facility could both be brought into the suit.Your boarding facility or trainer’s policy does not cover your liability. Their coverage will defend them, not you. So it is important to have the proper liability coverage from your own farm policy or homeowner’s insurance.
MYTH #2 “I’m fine. My agent says my liability for my horse is covered on my homeowner’s policy.” Reality: Most standard homeowner’s policies do not cover horse exposures, and if they do, it is usually limited to only on-premises. So make sure your agent knows an endorsement needs to be added to cover the liability for your horse, and that it includes off-premises exposure if your horse ever leaves your ranch. Even if you just keep a couple of horses in the backyard and ride on the weekends, make sure you have liability coverage for your horses on your homeowner’s policy. You never know when a child could hop your fence and be injured by a horse without you being aware; your fence could break, and your horse could get loose on the road and cause an automobile accident; your child’s friend grooming the horses could get kicked, causing severe injury. Protect yourself against these unforeseen but common accidents by having the proper liability coverage.
Reality: The EALA is a state law that is intended to protect equine professionals (including trainers, instructors, sponsors, organizers, breeders, groups, clubs, stables, and riding facilities) from lawsuits for personal injuries arising out of the inherent risk of equine activities. Inherent risk includes the propensity of the horse to bite, kick, buck, etc.; the unpredictable nature of the horse; hazards in the land; collisions with other animals or objects; and the potential of a rider to behave negligently. While helpful, the EALA does not provide absolute protection to equine professionals. Protection may not apply to claims involving faulty tack or equipment (for example, providing helmets or improperly cinching a saddle), claims involving failure to determine a rider’s ability to match him with the appropriate horse, premises liability exposures, gross negligence, injury to minors, or failure to comply with posted signs, and waiver/release provisions in the EALA. The Act can be dodged, and nothing prevents a lawsuit from being filed. An insurance policy covering your business liability provides the invaluable benefit of defense on your behalf to get a case dismissed.
MYTH #5 “My waiver/release is bulletproof.” Reality: If drafted correctly, a waiver or release can afford some (but not absolute) protection. Many equine releases do fail in court cases for many reasons. Getting a signed waiver or release is just the first step to trying to protect yourself. Having the proper liability coverage for all exposures allows you to protect yourself and provides you with a defense. Your insurance broker is a key part of your circle of trusted advisors— including your lawyer and your accountant—who work together to provide you with the proper coverage. Let them worry about protecting you and your ponies so you can keep your focus on the game!

2019 JUNIOR TOURNAMENT AND USPA NATIONAL YOUTH TOURNAMENT SERIES PRESENTED BY BILL FICK FORD The three-day Junior Tournament at Houston Polo Club took place in June with our best junior players competing across three divisions. The Intermediate and Lead Line divisions gave our youngest upand-coming polo stars a chance to show their stick-and-ball skills on the field. The National Youth Tournament Series (NYTS) qualifier division, presented by Bill Fick Ford, had six teams competing for spots on the NYTS Championship team. NYTS qualifiers are held at polo clubs across the United States during the summer months. NYTS All Stars are announced at each qualifier, and each All Star is in contention for being selected for the NYTS Championship, held each year at the end of August. Teams for the NYTS qualifier tournament were announced on Thursday and games started on Friday. Players’ ages ranged from 11 years to 19 years old, brothers and sisters played with and against each other, and the sportsmanship and ability of these young players were truly impressive. Sunday afternoon polo was exciting, with the Consolation final, which saw Rocking P defeat BCI 5–4 with a brilliant game-winning goal from Bridget Price in the last 30 seconds. The Championship game was just as close, coming down to a gamewinning goal in the last minute for a 6–5 win for Vintage Polo over Bill Fick Ford.

ach November, as the culmination of its Fall Season, the Houston Polo Club hosts its Women’s Tournament. In 2019, the 25th annual tournament saw 24 teams compete over five days in 22 matches in five different levels of play: the Farish Cup Invitational, the Bayou City Cup, the Ladies’ Junior Invitational, the US Open Women’s Handicap, and the USPA Texas Women’s Open. The Bayou City Cup started off the final matches on Saturday with a matchup between Big Diamond Pools and Downtown Rotary Club. The close match ended in a 4–2 win for Downtown Rotary Club. Sunday was the big day, with final matches presented for the other four levels. The Farish Cup Invitational, which saw a round robin of six teams compete, culminated in one championship and two consolation finals held on Sunday. In the final, Louis XIII defeated American National 7–3. The Ladies’ Junior Invitational showcased some of the best upand-coming women players in Texas. In the final, Land Rover Houston Central took to the field to shut out Luxury Event

Rentals in a 3–0 win. All the players displayed great horsemanship and knowledge of the game. The future is looking bright for the young women players at the Houston Polo Club! The USPA Texas Women’s Open Finalists, LM Ranch and Polo Gear, narrowly ousted the competition during the week to earn their spot in the finals. The match did not disappoint. Polo Gear struck first with two quick goals by Dawn Jones and Lottie Lamacraft. When LM Ranch’s Alexis Ellison responded with a goal, Dawn Jones scored again, ending the first chukker with a score of 3–1.5 for Polo Gear. In the second chukker, Polo Gear’s Tiffany Busch added two more goals on the board to LM Ranch’s Izzy Parson’s one goal, ending the chukker at 5–2.5 in favor of Polo Gear. In the third chukker, LM Ranch tried to gain on Polo Gear’s lead, but only managed one open-goal penalty 2 conversion by Tiamo Hudspeth. In the final chukker. Hudspeth and Parsons each converted penalties to come within 1.5 goals of Polo Gear’s lead; however, Polo Gear’s Meghan Gracida scored the last goal of the game, securing an 8–5.5 win over LM Ranch. As players shook hands, the crowd had a chance to stretch their legs and stomp divots before the final of the US Open Women’s THEHOUSTONPOLOCLUB.COM 47
Handicap took place. Spectators enjoyed the beautiful autumn day, sipped champagne compliments of American National, and got a sneak peek at the new vehicles from Porsche of West Houston, Land Rover Houston Central, and Bill Fick Ford. After the break, the final two teams of the 2019 US Open Women’s Handicap, BCI/Sullivan Group and Bearsden, hit the field. The game was tied at 1–1 at the half. It was looking like it was going to be a game of defense; however, in the third chukker, BCI/Sullivan Group’s Athena Malin and Marissa Wells capitalized on opportunities, creating a 4–1 lead for themselves as the teams entered the final chukker. Bearsden came back in the last chukker to bring the score up to 4–3. The crowd was on the edge of their seats as Wells pushed to give her team another goal; however, she

miscued the ball, leaving it for teammate Malin, who put the ball right through the center of the goal, giving BCI/Sullivan Group a 2-goal lead as the clock ran down and the horn blew. BCI/Sullivan Group came away with the 2019 title of US Open Women’s Handicap champs with a score of 5–3.

POLO PRO:
MASON WROE M
ason Wroe grew up in a horse family in Midland, TX. Born to a polo-playing father and a mother who rode dressage and jumping, Mason was riding before he learned to walk. He started testing the waters as a pro in his teens at the Midland Polo Club and played intercollegiate polo at Texas A&M, where he won the 2007 National Championship and was named Player of the Year. After graduation, Mason decided to commit to the polo lifestyle and started his now 17-year career as a pro in earnest. Mason is based in Cat Spring,TX, where he, his wife, Kaylee, and their young daughter, Evelyn, base their polo operation. They carry about 35 horses, but Mason’s primary string is 20 ponies. He has spent the last two summers in Aspen, playing with Tonkawa, and in the winter, the Wroes take their brood to Florida. Mason’s young daughter, Evelyn, has made him re-evaluate the balance between work and family life: “I said to my wife about Evelyn the other day: ‘Did you ever think you could love someone so much?’ If I have a horrible game or lose, she doesn’t know that. She runs and jumps in my arms, and it puts the game in perspective; that is so much bigger than the game. It changes you as a person.” While he has spent many winters in Wellington, FL, Mason was ready to take on a new role this year at the Sarasota Polo Club as Director of Polo and Head Polo Pro. “To grow as a person and a player, you have to constantly put yourself in uncomfortable situations. I am not going to play polo forever, so being able to have different tools in my chest is what made me look into this opportunity.” Mason Wroe is awarded MVP at the 10-Goal Texas Open (pictured with daughter Evelyn)
52 HOUSTO N P OLO C LUB
When asked how long he has been playing at the Houston Polo Club, Mason pauses to think and surprises himself at the answer: “Wow, almost 15 years! I have played with Tonkawa for several years now, and they are really a first-class organization. The manager, Jimmy Seward, puts the utmost pride and care into whatever he does, and they do it right from the ground up.” If the 2019 season is any indication, Tonkawa probably won’t want to mess with its current winning combination. The team’s momentum started in the summer season at the Aspen Valley Polo Club, where they won the USPA Silver Cup—the oldest polo tournament in the United States (this was its 119th year). The Tonkawa team (Jeff Hildebrand, Sapo Caset, Juan Martin Obregon, and Mason) went undefeated in the tournament and secured a 15–10 victory in the final. Mason calls the tournament a career highlight, and it set the tone for Tonkawa’s fall season at the Houston Polo Club.
“We came back to Houston, and Jeff Hildebrand and Jimmy Seward put a really fun, strong team together: me, Nacho Badiola, Vaughn Miller Jr. and Jeff Hildebrand.” The team had incredible chemistry on the field, and took the title in all three 10-goal tournaments: Keleen & Carlton Beal Cup, H. Ben Taub Memorial, and the Texas Open. Mason was awarded MVP in two of those tournaments, but he is quick to defer to the team effort. “The team has a great relationship, and there was great competition,” said Mason. “We capped off the season by winning the Texas Open, which is a tournament I have been trying to win since I started playing in Houston. It was the happiest I have ever felt on the polo field. I don’t think I’ll ever forget the feeling after we won that one, and we had swept the season.”
2019 Season Highlights • USPA 119th Silver Cup Champs (with Tonkawa) • 10-Goal Champs (Tonkawa): H. Ben Taub Cup, Carlton & Keleen Beal Cup, Texas Cup • MVP Honors: Carlton & Keleen Beal Cup, Texas Cup, Penny Memorial Cup • Best Playing Pony: June
