HOW TO USE THIS WORKBOOK These workbooks were designed with one thing in mind: to get you into action. For that reason, they’re not complicated, and each exercise should take you no longer than 15 minutes. Do one, or do them all, that’s up to you. The important thing is this: you’ve learned something new today, so take advantage of it and put it into action.

Set aside 15 minutes to work through one of the challenges.

Print out as many copies of the tools as you need and keep them handy.
4.
Decide which tools work really well, and share them with your teammates.

Repeat with each exercise, as desired.
STEP 1:
Self Awareness
Noting your feelings
Write down the feelings that you had in the last 24 hours (be honest). As you are writing them down, remind yourself that these feelings are not good or bad, they just “are”.
Who and What pushes your buttons?
What are the things are people that “push your buttons”? What can you do the next time you find yourself in that situation to keep your cool?
Buy a journal!
If you haven’t done this already, go out and buy yourself a journal and make it a daily habit to review your emotions and actions at the end of every day. To learn more about reviews in general, watch the summary of The Shibumi Strategy, and in particular, pay attention to the “After Action Review” that was created by the US Army.

What do the voices in your head tell you on a regular basis?
If they are negative things, write down 3 reasons why each of the things you say about yourself are wrong.
What can you learn from the people you meet?
Write down the names of 3 people you had contact with today, and what you learned from them. If you can’t think of anything you learned from them, come back tomorrow and do this exercise again.

Social Awareness
Interesting things about interesting people
Write down the names of 3 people you’ll come into contact tomorrow that you don’t know intimately (no family members or close friends). Before you run into them, make an effort to learn something new about them, write it down here and bring it up in the conversation. See how differently those conversations go than your usual encounters with them and make notes about it. Name: Interesting things:

Doing the little things
Doing the little things is critical to managing relationships with others. Who will you recognize tomorrow, and how will you do it?
Explaining your decisions
Explaining your decisions, and not just making them, is critical to your success. So, what decisions will you be making this week or month? Write them down along with the rationale.
