Jenn Suhr’s Hunt for Third Consecutive Podium Finish in Brazil
Jenn Suhr is an American pole vaulting champion and leader, and has been for a long time. She has competed in the pole vault event in the previous two Olympics, and has finished on the podium both times. In the 2008 Beijing Olympics, she grabbed a silver medal. In the following Olympics, in London 2012, she improved on her previous finish by becoming the Olympic champion. In the beginning of this year, she broke the indoor world record. That achievement set her up for another massive one: an opportunity to shoot for glory in this year’s Rio Olympics. (For high quality Pacer FX vaulting poles, check this out)
It is worth revisiting the 2012 Olympic event, from which Suhr emerged as the gold medalist. It was an exciting event, especially towards the end. The weather was less than ideal; the drizzle and wind were somewhat of a hindrance. Once the bar was set at a height of 4.75m, only three athletes remained standing. They were Jennifer Suhr (from the USA), Yarisley Silva (from Cuba), and Elena Isinbaeva (two-time champion from Russia).
Suhr entered the competition with a bar height of about 4.55 m. Even more impressive is the fact that she got to that point without failing a jump attempt. Silva cleared 4.45 m after two attempts at it. Russia’s Isinbaeva also needed to attempts, but she cleared 4.55m, on par with Suhr. Suhr went on to win the gold medal. Silva finished with a silver medal, and Isinbaeva took the bronze medal after failing to clear a height of 4.70 m. Suhr’s win was as big for her as it was for the US because she became the first nonRussian female pole vaulter to win multiple medals in the Olympic pole vault. This was a massive achievement for Suhr who was not always a pole vaulter. She has worked hard to raise herself to champion status.
