Welcome to Polka Theatre’s new season

We have a wonderful selection of productions for you to enjoy, alongside our popular Take Part workshops and Saturday Club. There’s something for every child between the ages of 0-12 yrs. As well as a variety of visiting shows for all ages, we are delighted to be presenting four new Polka Theatre productions, plus a summer revival of our acclaimed co-production of Julia Donaldson’s The Everywhere Bear

We begin spring in our Main Theatre with Jack v Giant, a new musical based on the much-loved fairytale, created by the team behind the hit show How to Hide a Lion. We’re then excited to celebrate the magic, power and wonder of nature with a new adaptation of Robert MacFarlane’s The Lost Spells. For the summer, we join forces with international comedy and physical theatre company Spymonkey, for HAIRY : a hilarious and playful investigation into how hair impacts our identity. In Let’s Build!, younger children can join in and shape the landscape of tomorrow in an interactive and imaginative performance. We can’t do what we do without our incredible supporters, and we are immensely grateful to the Chan Yin Chuen Memorial Charitable Foundation for their vital support this season. There’s plenty for you to choose from this season but you don’t need a ticket to come to Polka. With free-to-access play spaces, a wonderful shop and café, enjoy discovering all we have to offer at Polka, we can’t wait to welcome you.

We’re all trying to work out our story. Sometimes you have to find the courage to be just you.

Cleo is on a journey like no other. She’s trying to discover her past whilst attempting to stay on her feet in the present. Piles of clothes become sea creatures, dresses become parachutes and shadows dance as Cleo and two new friends find a place called home.

Made in collaboration with children in the care system, this is a show for anyone who is looking to find where they fit in.

Wed 15 - Sun 19 Feb

Explore an ecosystem of balloons; universes in miniature. A playful performance for children and a relaxing experience for adults, where one performer explores all manner of balloons from small floating moons to vast bouncing orbs. Balloons are free to float, fly and sway. Hold your breath and go sailing away... After the show, stay and play with your own balloon!

Journey with us into the wild world…

A girl with no name finds a magical book of spells that conjures up a wild world. Moths appear from nowhere; Owls light up the dark; a Red Fox leads the way down a rabbit hole to a brand-new wonderland. As she journeys through the wild world, she meets a host of wonderful characters on a fantastical adventure like no other; she learns the dandelion time, meets a boy who turns into a seal, flies with band of jackdaws and battles with conkers - on a quest to find that which was once lost.

A fun, wild and boisterous adventure full of paw-tapping music and dancing, played live on-stage by talented actor-musicians, The Lost Spells is a riot of colour and a new Alice in Wonderland, celebrating the magic, power and wonder of nature that could be just outside your window.

Adapted from the ‘cultural phenomenon’ and bestselling book that has delighted and inspired people of all ages, by globally renowned writer Robert MacFarlane and artist Jackie Morris. Moving, joyful and funny, The Lost Spells is for anyone who wants to celebrate and save the natural world around us - be that in the city or countryside, before it’s lost forever.

The Bear Everywhere

One small bear’s big adventure…

The Everywhere Bear has a wonderful time with the children in Class One, but one day he gets more than he bargained for when he falls unnoticed from a backpack and embarks on his own big adventure! He’s washed down a drain and whooshed out to sea, rescued by a fishing boat, loaded onto a lorry, carried off by a seagull… how will he ever make it back to Class One?

This captivating and beautiful story, from best-selling author Julia Donaldson and illustrator Rebecca Cobb springs to life with rhyme, original music and delightfully expressive puppets in Polka’s fun and exciting stage adaptation.

Comedy-meets-rock-band-meets-punkclown-mayhem, HAIRY is a playful and frankly laughable exploration of that most versatile and significant feature of human anatomy.

Hair seems to be everywhere! And sprouting in the most unlikely places! Hair to be styled, waxed, fashioned, shaved, plucked, jeri-curled, dreadlocked and shorn. Hair to be striking, funny, scary, surprising, gorgeous and greasy. Long, short, curly, straight, thick, thin, ingrowing, up-covered, unwanted or removed. Where’s it going to turn up next?!

Fear not! Our four super-hairos are on hand to untangle it all for you. Their super-powers mean they can grow hair ANYWHERE on their body! Specialists in all things hairy, this band of bristly buddies are ready to launch themselves fearlessly on a hairy journey of discovery.

One thing is for sure: It’s going to get HAIRY!

HAIRY is the first show created specially for young people by Spymonkey, the UK’s longest-running comedy theatre company. It will have few words and great generous dollops of bold visual comedy.

Young & Younger Voices

Looking for Polka ambassadors…

Polka Theatre has an established group of children aged between 4 to 12 years called Young and Younger Voices. These groups have been specifically set up to ensure that children contribute directly to Polka’s creative processes of developing new theatre. These young people have a passion for theatre, the creative arts and want to have their voices heard!

All participants will have the opportunity to take part in a range of workshops, watch our productions, share views and opinions with the creative teams and provide feedback on all areas of the theatre. They will have a say on the decisions that get made and influence how Polka runs!

All members of Young & Younger Voices groups will be invited to:

n Watch Polka productions, give feedback and write reviews.

n Exclusive backstage tours of the theatre.

n Attend meetings with Polka staff and Trustees.

n Work alongside our artists and attend research and development sessions.

n Look at how we market our plays through our website and print.

n Take part in Polka holiday workshops (offers and discounts subject to availability).

n Make new friends who have the same interest in theatre.

n Be a Polka ambassador!

How to apply for our Young or Younger Voices groups: Email Heidi on heidi@polkatheatre.com for an application form or you can download one at polkatheatre.com/take-part/young-voices/
