An opinion poll This survey is done on a sample to know the general opinion of the population. This poll helps in finding opinion on a certain topic or a product. This is designed by creating a series of question and extrapolating the result to get a general opinion of an entire population.

Types of polls The deliberative opinion poll This type of opinion poll incorporates the principles of deliberative democracy. In this poll rather than just gauging public opinion, a deliberative poll help in understanding, would be the public opinion if they are well educated on a particular issue. In this poll, a large enough sample size is selected randomly to have a good representation of public opinion.

A straw poll or straw vote These poll results are nonbinding and are normally done to gauge support of an idea. This is done especially in meetings to understand on which topic more meeting time should be devoted and which side attendees are leaning on. Polls can be also divided into various other forms: Multiple Choice Poll: Respondents has 2 to 10 alternatives for a question and the results are calculated as number of votes, percentage, horizontal or vertical bars, or a pie chart. Multiple Round Poll: This is same as multiple choice polls, except that respondents have the choice to give answer in more than one alternative. This has a maximum of 10 rounds

Types of polls and once all rounds of polling are done, the total result is calculated and the results are displayed in votes, percentage, symbols, horizontal or vertical bars, or a pie chart. Ordering Poll: In this respondents decides the preference of alternative answer and results are displayed as rankings. These types of polls are also called exclusive polls where already ranked options are frozen after each round so that no voting can occur on that answer Grading Poll: Grading poll grades the answer on a scale of: 1-2, 1-3, 1-4, 1-5, 1-6, 1-10, and 4-10. Results are displayed as average grades or symbols.
