FESTA JUNINA
Celebrating the Brazilian culture abroad by polly leitão
In Brazil, June is the month when we celebrate the three Catholic Saints: St. John the Baptist, St. Anthony & St. Paul. The traditional festivity known as Festa Junina, was first introduced to the Brazilian cultural scene by the Portuguese colonizers, back when Brazil was in fact a Portuguese colony. Whoever thinks June’s festivities are only celebrated by hicks is quite mistaken. The traditional dances and games which best characterize St. John’s party (as the party is also known), have their roots imported from France and Portugal. The choreographed dance called the quadrilha was inherited from France and the dance with the bows from Portugal. Upon arriving on the Brazilian shores these European traditions mingled with the local indigenous and afroBrazilian culture giving birth to one of the most colorful and flavorful Brazilian cultural expressions. Culinary specialties like corn bread, Brazilian sweet tamales (pamonha), peanut’s cake curiously known as boy’s foot (pé-de-moleque), corn pudding (canjica), as well as the extravagant country costumes are definitely the highlights of the party. Entertained by the sounds of Forró, couples dance the quadrilha all night long around a big bonfire. The quadrilha usually portrays a fictional wedding where the pregnant bride’s father makes the unwilling groom marry his daughter. A favorite among the ladies in search of true love, St. Anthony is also one of the patron saints of this great party. Hoping St. Anthony will help them find a boyfriend, single women of all ages perform a funny ritual which involves hanging the statue of St. Anthony upside down until love strikes. St. Anthony back in the XII century was known to finance dowries to less fortunate young women just so they could get married, and so the legend has come to life.
