ULTRA

KIDS

The Spartan Race weekend is comprised of three different races happening at Killington Resort: the Sprint; the Beast; the Ultra. Kids as young as age 4 can also participate in Junior Spartan races Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 15 and 16.

Welcome to the Birthplace of the Spartan Beast There’s a reason it’s called the Beast of the East, Killington, host of the Spartan World Championship, is a tough mountain. If you think you’re among the baddest of the east, you’re welcome to come play in what is known as “Joe’s backyard.” This is where Spartan Race was born; and that means anything goes. You can expect steep slopes, off-trail descents, massive climbs, and chilly

swims. The wonderful ski-town of Killington welcomes Spartans with open arms. Come see where it all began and witness the menace that gave Spartan Race its roots. Be forewarned though: this course has been known to destroy those not prepared in their mind, body, legs and soul. This iconic race has a lot of history. Aside from being the birthplace of the Beast, it’s where Spartan Race was being held when NBC first showed interest in highlighting the sport at the 2013 World Championship. In 2014, NBC returned

to film the ruthless battle that led to the crowning of the first Spartan Race World Champion from Europe, Jon Albon. If you want to experience one of the most rewarding and challenging courses in the world, come out to the beautiful Green Mountains of Vermont. While the climbs will have your calves and quads begging for a massage, the cascading silhouettes of mountains and the unpredictable weather will have you shouting AROO! as you battle for glory from the mountain tops. THE PERFECT

BURPEE Illustrations by Maxx Steinmetz

The burpee is a full body exercise often used in strength training and as an aerobic exercise — it is also the classic “punishment” for not being able to complete an obstacle during an obstacle course race like the Spartan. The basic movement is performed in four steps: 1. From the standing position, drop into a squat position with your hands on the ground. 2. Kick your feet back, while keeping your arms extended

By Paul Holmes

forming a plank position. 3. Immediately return your feet to the squat position.

4. Jump up from the squat position. The burpee push up (also known as a “bastardo” according to Wikipedia) is a popular variation and the one enforced at this weekend’s Spartan Beast competition. The burpee push up requires the athlete to perform one push-up after assuming the plank position (chest to ground). Although many athletes have only recently heard about burpees with the popularization of obstacle course racing, the exercise is not new. According to Oxford Dictionaries Online, the burpee exercise was named in the 1930s for American physiologist Royal H. Burpee, who developed the burpee test. He created the “burpee” exercise as part of his PhD thesis in applied physiology at Columbia University in 1940 as a quick and simple way to assess fitness. The exercise was popularized when the United States Armed Services adopted it as a way to assess the fitness level of recruits when the US entered WWII. Consisting of a series of the exercises performed in rapid succession, the test was meant to be a quick measure of agility, coordination and strength.

TYROLEAN TRAVERSE A.K.A. the pond traverse requires racers to pull themselves along a rope, (often over a pond). Some pull themselves along the top of the rope, but most choose the underneath route; hand over hand, heel over heel. Just like most obstacles, the faster you can get off the rope, the more effort you’ll save. Tip: wear long socks or pants to protect your calves from rope burn. Most importantly: don’t let go!

The obstacles

A run down of some “typical” challenges Spartan racers may encounter on the course By Polly Lynn Mikula

The Spartan Sprint, about 3+ miles long consists of 20+ obstacles; the Spartan Beast, 13+ miles long, consists of 30+ obstacles; and the Ultra Beast is the Beast times two (26+ miles, 60+ obstacles.) Failure to fully complete any obstacles results in a 30 burpee penalty. While the obstacles vary from race to race, Spartan racers are likely to encounter many of these staples: barbed wire, wall climb, spear throw, rope

climb, heavy object carries (usually a sandbag and a bucket of rocks), Herculean hoist (lift with a pulley), Tyrolean traverse (pond traverse), monkey bars, cargo nets, Tarzan swing, traversal wall (similar to a bouldering wall), a zig-zag log jump, tractor pulls, dunk walls, Atlas carries (carrying a heavy object to a flag and back), tire flips, stump balances, and fire jump.

Obstacles are designed to challenge racers strength, agility and technique – some are fun, others are decidedly not (i.e. carrying a bucket of rocks up a mountainous loop – it just hurts!) When on the course, you can inevitably hear audible groans (or worse) from the racers as soon as they see a carry-type obstacle ahead. Here are a some of the most common obstacles and a few tips on technique to master them: The obstacles, page 10B

Oldest Spartan Racer to compete in Killington

By Katy Savage

Johanne Di Cori isn’t like most 78-year-old grandmothers. Di Cori, who lives alone in Canada, is always moving. She walks at least 30 miles a week, three miles in the morning and usually three at night. She walks to the grocery store and carries home her groceries. A self-described “neat freak,” she does her own house chores, including gardening and mowing the lawn. Di Cori plans to compete in the Spartan Race in Killington Sept. 15. Di Cori, who is about to turn 79 in October, is the oldest person to ever compete in a Spartan Race. “I just wanted to see what I was able to do, what i was able to go through—to see my strength,” said Di Cori. She will be doing the Spartan Sprint, a grueling 3-mile obstacle course, which involves dragging a sled, climbing rope and mud walls, going across

monkey bars and crawling under barbed wire. This will be Di Cori’s third time competing in a Spartan Race. She competed in Spartan races back in 2012 and 2013 at the encouragement of her daughter Leyla Di Cori. “People in the family were like, ‘Are you crazy?’” said Leyla, who plans to race with her mother. “No, we’re not crazy, we’re just a different type of breed.” Leyla, 39, is no stranger to Spartan Races, either. She once was a top 12 Spartan Race competitor in the world. She’s competed in three Spartan Death Races, dubbed the world’s toughest race. Leyla has also competed in several Spartan Sprint races as wel as the Spartan Ultra Race, a 30mile race with more than 60 obstacles. “I like to see how much I can push myself,” said Leyla. “You’d be surSubmitted prised at what the body can do. Spectators will have the opportunity to see many different obstacles from the Spartan village at the K1 base (top of Killington Road) as well as Snowshed and Ramshead base areas as the course typically crosses through those area a few times. While the obstacles are most entertaining to watch, it is easy for spectators to forget that distance and vertical climbs up and down the mountains are another behemoth obstacle for participants attributing to a racers fatigue. The “death march” up straight up Flume to Killington Peak often placed at the end of the race, probably receives the most profanities of any obstacle – and the path is lined with racers sitting/ laying down, sometimes palming their face contemplating whether or not to

continue. Hitting and surpassing personal limits of mental and physical exhaustion is a common theme at Spartan events, but founder Pittsfield, Vermont resident Joe DeSena’s premiere intention was to help folks just get off the couch and participate. The races began as a more manageable spin-off of the “Death Race,” a 48-hour endurance event founded in 2004. The first Spartan Race event was held in 2010 at the Catamount Outdoor Center in Williston, Vermont. And the series grew exponentially from there. In 2017, Spartan held over 200 races in 30 countries and boasted over 1 million participants of all skill levels. ESPN describes the Spartan Race as “a true test of will.”

LOG TOPS

Balance atop a series of logs over various heights. This is a test of balance. This one definitely takes practice and a lot of focus! Tip: Keeping consistent momentum helps with balance, looking a few steps ahead will help you to anticipate where your balance will need to be.

TARZAN ROPES The Tarzan Ropes are among the most difficult obstacles at most Spartan races. The object is to grasp a hold of the first rope and swing from rope to rope all the way to the end then ring a bell. Tip: when you’re close enough to the end, use your feet to hit the bell!

WALL TRAVERSE

A.K.A. the bouldering wall, challenges racers to traverse horizontally across a wall or series of walls using only the hand holds and foot holds provided (usually rocks or blocks). If you fall off or use the top of the wall, you’ve “failed” the obstacle and must do burpees. Tip: keep your hips close to the wall.

PARALLEL BARS The parallel bars can be placed up and down or at varying distances apart adding to the challenge. Tip: Keep your momentum going and use your swing to your advantage.

Spartan’s founder inspires

GROW YOUR LIFE IN KILLINGTON

“PUT ONE FOOT IN FRONT OF THE OTHER, FOCUS ON THE LITTLE GOAL RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU, AND ALMOST ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE,” SAID JOE DE SENA. Joe De Sena is the founder and CEO of Spartan Race, the world’s leading obstacle racing company. Following a successful career on Wall Street, De Sena moved his family to Pittsfield, Vermont to operate Riverside and Amee Farms – organic farms, a bed and breakfast, and now a wedding venue – and a general store for hikers. It was here his passion grew for ultramarathons, adventure races, and endurance events; and thus the idea for the Spartan Race was born. Now, with more than 200 events in 30+ countries, Spartan Race has more than 1 million global participants offering open heats for all fitness levels and ages, as well as competitive and elite heats. The company has more than 5 million passionate social media followers, health and wellness products, and two popular NBC Joe De Sena television series. De Sena has helped to make obstacle racing one of the fastest growing sports—and lifestyles— in the world. Joe’s message of inspiration and personal transformation, combined with his twotime New York Times Best Selling books “Spartan Up” and “Spartan Fit,” make him a popular keynote speaker and inspiration to athletes. Throughout his lifetime, De Sena’s racing resume is the stuff of legend – over 50 ultra-events overall and 14 Ironman events in one year alone. He currently lives in Tokyo, Japan with his wife Courtney and their four children. De Sena’s bio is an excerpt. For more information visit joedesena.com.
