WELCOME TO THE WORLD CUP AT KILLINGTON: Dear ski racing fans, Welcome to one of the most exciting race weeks on the World Cup circuit. For the first time in 25 years (since 1991) a World Cup event will be held in the eastern U.S.A. And for the first time in 38 years (since 1978) a World Cup event will be held in Vermont. Killington Resort will host the Ladies' Audi FIS Ski World Cup, Nov. 26-27, 2016. Located in the heart of the Green Mountains of Vermont, Killington is the largest ski and snowboard destination in eastern North America; it is an ideal choice to host an event of this magnitude. The event is expected to attract millions of spectators worldwide who will tune in to watch the races live and thousands to the slopes of Killington to watch nearly one hundred talented athletes compete at the highest level. The event will illustrate just how strong ski racing is as a thriving sport with passionate fans and a promising future. Vermont has a long history of developing top Alpine athletes, with strong ski club programs and academies attracting ambitious young talent to its slopes. Busloads of aspiring athletes are planning to come for the World Cup at Killington to witness live and in person the amazing skills these ladies display—to see their role models in action! Race fans will have ample opportunities to watch the races either from the two ticketed grandstands and VIP areas or from the ground-level slopeside arena, which is free and open to the public. Additionally, a big screen on the side of the course will broadcast live up-close action from the top of the course all the way to the finish line. The spectator venue is located around the finish line at the bottom of Superstar and will be animated with live music, food, drink and an expansive Expo Village. But the action doesn’t stop there: A welcome parade, autograph signings, ski movie screenings, après ski parties, live music and more will keep visitors entertained throughout the weekend with a lively schedule of events and activities. We hope that you enjoy your time in Central Vermont and come back to visit often. On behalf of our partners at Killington Resort, the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association, the International Ski Federation, the World Cup committee, area chambers of commerce, local businesses and everyone who has worked tirelessly to put together this event, we welcome you to the World Cup at Killington. Sincerely,

Polly and Jason Mikula Co-publishers of the Mountain Times On behalf of the greater Killington community

SUPERSTAR RACE TRAIL By Polly Mikula The World Cup race at Killington will take place on Superstar, which finishes in a road-accessible base area at roughly 2,500 feet above sea level. While it is significantly lower in elevation than Killington’s typical early season offerings, the resort’s snowmaking prowess made the early race possible. The slope has never been used for a race of this caliber at any time of the year, but the pitch of Superstar is comparable to Maribor, Slovenia, a classic women’s World Cup venue, according to FIS Women’s Chief Race Director Atle Skaardal. When World Cup officials first came to Killington to assess the resort’s race trail options, all agreed that the Superstar trail was the best choice. Not only does it have convenient lift access, but almost no work had to be done to it to make it

8 | 2016 AUDI FIS SKI WORLD CUP

FIS compliant, according to Tiger Shaw, president and CEO of the United States Ski and Snowboard Association. The Superstar trail also offers ideal viewing because people can see most of the trail from the base of the mountain. When watching the races, especially the Giant Slalom on Saturday, which starts near the top of the run, it will be helpful to know the parts of the trail. Superstar is broken into three named sections: The “Top Headwall” is a steep section that begins at the top of the slope and ends where the Launch Pad trail intersects Superstar. “The Fields” follows and continues until the High Road trail intersects it connecting to the Skyelark trail. The “Lower Headwall” is the steep bottom section that ends with the finish line — where the Expo Village and viewing areas are located.

HOW TO WORLD CUP By Polly Mikula It’s been 25 years since the World Cup was held on the East Coast and the last Vermont venue was Stratton in 1978. Traditionally, Aspen has hosted the early season U.S. races but this year, it was selected to host the World Cup Finals in March. That change opened up a spot, and Killington was chosen as the new site. In addition to Superstar being an ideal race trail for both competitors and spectators, the proximity to so many urban areas and the fact that there’s a two-lane road right up to the finish line, made Killington uniquely attractive, organizers have explained. “This is possibly one of the best places in the world for being able to watch a huge portion of

a World Cup race. It’s unbelievable,” said Tiger Shaw, president of the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association. “There is one man who decides where a World Cup will be and that’s FIS Women’s World Cup Tour Director Atle Skaardal,” Shaw explained. Killington Resort President Mike Solimano remembers walking the Superstar course with Skaardal in September 2015 as part of the site inspection. “He hadn’t skied it or even seen it with snow, but he said ‘it’s perfect!,'” Solimano recounted. “On a lot of courses you have to alter the terrain, this one didn’t need that,” Shaw explained.

katrina ammer event director

"Get here early, dress warm and enjoy! Remember how lucky we are to be able to watch the best women in the world race on our mountain. Help us show the world that Vermont and New England are a true destination for skiing and riding."

mike solimano

president & general manager, killington/pico

"Dress warmly (good socks!!) for the World Cup. Arrive early and enjoy every moment. Check out every Expo booth, dance a lot and cheer on every racer. It means so much to the racers starting with higher numbers to have people cheering them on! And who knows, someday they will be on the podium and your cheers will have helped them get there. Be sure you get back in place for the start of the second run so you don't miss the final 30!"

“The first thing I hope all spectators know is that general admission is free! So we hope lots of people will come to watch the races. Secondly, dress warmly with good boots in case it’s wet or cold. Thirdly, look at the schedule and plan to arrive on time; they are early starts. Follow the signs for park and ride shuttles and most importantly, enjoy and have fun!”

ATHLETE PROFILES HOMECOMING FOR SHIFFRIN

East Coast training has advantages, Shiffrin says By Lisa Gosselin and Polly Mikula

Mikaela Shiffrin has become one of the world’s most recognized athletes and a major force in the powerhouse of women who make up the U.S. World Cup ski team. She is also the only one of this group who grew up skiing in New England. Therefore, the World Cup event in Killington will be somewhat of a homecoming for her, as it will be for WC ski racing, which hasn’t had an East Coast stopover since 1991. “I’m excited to bring World Cup racing back to the East and hopefully spark even more interest in the sport,” Shiffrin said. “I also love racing in front of a home crowd because I can really feel the support carrying me down the mountain.” “New England ski fans are awesome,” she continued. At age 11 Shiffrin left her tiny home hill (Storrs Hill, elevation 300 feet) near Hanover, N.H., and enrolled at Burke Mountain Academy in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom, which has turned out 33 Olympians in the past 46 years. In 2015, eight Burke Mountain Academy graduates were on the U.S. Alpine Ski Team and two were on the Nordic team, including Shiffrin, a 2013 graduate. “One of the reasons New England has turned out so many top racers is that we have maybe 30 ski mountains within a two- or three-hour drive,” explained Tiger Shaw, president of the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association. Shaw has known Shiffrin since she was born and watched her train from an early age. “Mikaela would be out there from the minute the lifts ran until they closed, and sometimes five days a week," remembered Shaw of her days at Storrs Hill. “Think of it: How do you get in 10,000 hours of practice time in? I tried to figure it out: I was 26 when I hit 10,000 hours. I bet Mikaela did that by the time she was 18… Even at age 7 Mikaela was beating kids four years ahead of her. Just watching her ski, you knew she was something else.” Shiffrin remembers her first trip to Killington when she was about 9 years old. While the weather was very cold and wet, she remembers “having a blast skiing” and “the waffle shack at the base of the mountain.” “In general, I think technically strong racers tend to prevail in the East, and Killington will be no different,” said Shiffrin.

"I have never limited myself by focusing much on being a 'normal' teenager." ~Mikaela Shiffrin PODIUM TRACKS A New Hampshire native and recent Burke Mountain Academy, Vt., grad (May 2013), Mikaela Shiffrin began turning heads almost instantly when she finished top 15 at her first two NorAm Cup races. But the heads started spinning when she won a Super Combined in British Columbia two weeks later. Shortly thereafter, she landed a World Cup podium during her rookie season—at age 16—then blew the world apart with a World Championship Slalom gold medal and the World Cup Slalom title during her sophomore year. Shiffrin posted her first World Cup starts as a 15-year-old and nearly scored her first points on the circuit. Her first podium happened a year later (2012), then she let loose. Shiffrin nabbed World

Champs Slalom gold, four World Cup Slalom wins (six podiums) and capped the winter with a legendary come-from-behind victory in the final race of the season to clinch the Slalom title. The round-up: Shiffrin became the first U.S. Slalom World Cup champion since Tamara McKinney in 1983-84; the fourth youngest woman to win a Crystal Globe and the sixth youngest woman to win any World Cup title; and the first non-European to win four World Cup Slalom races in a season. Off snow, Shiffrin enjoys reading and playing tennis and soccer with her athletic family—Dartmouth-racer Dad, Masters-racer Mom, and collegiate-racer brother Taylor. She now lives and trains in Eagle-Vail, Colo.

“I am so happy to be on two feet and skiing fast. Great way to end a season and begin a new one!” ~Resi Stiegler PODIUM TRACKS Daughter to Olympic gold medalist Pepi Stiegler, Resi Stiegler was born and grew up in Jackson Hole, Wyo., and Lienz, Austria. At 31, her accomplishments as a racer are quite extensive. She's represented the United States at every level of Alpine ski racing—Topolino, Whistler Cup, Junior Worlds, World Cup, World Championships and the Olympics. She’s won Junior Worlds medals and U.S. titles and has stood on the World Cup podium. This U.S. Ski Team veteran entered the 2015 season as an independent, after not meeting criteria for the first time in her long career, but also with two consecutive injury-free seasons and full prep periods (something she had never experienced

before). It paid off for Stiegler. She worked her way back to "A" team status for the 2016 season and it ended up being the best comeback season of her career, grabbing seven top-15 finishes, two top-10 finishes and ranking 13th in the world in Slalom. Keep a close eye on Stiegler in the finish. She always greets the crowd with a smile, throwing her arms up in the air in celebration. The crowd goes wild. This simple, pure act of joy is an example for all – whether it be her teammates or young competitors. When not competing around the world, Stiegler splits her time between Jackson Hole and Hawaii. She has an eye for art and passion for photography.

“I use my home in Tahoe as a refueling station ... I believe that the Lake has magic powers.” ~Lila Lapanja PODIUM TRACKS Lila Lapanja was 16 when she got the call from the U.S. Ski Team in the spring of 2011. "I was so excited. I've been working so hard…it's just one step closer to my dream of being an Olympic ski racer," said Lapanja. She rode that momentum into a remarkable junior career, finishing sixth in the Junior Worlds Slalom, winning back-to-back U.S. Junior combined titles, and landing on the podium at the U.S Nationals with a bronze Overall and Junior title in Slalom. In 2014, Lapanja claimed the NorAm Slalom title and secured her spot on the World Cup as a tech stand-out and NorAm champion. However, in 2015 she struggled with an injury and had to forfeit her Slalom spot so she could heal. Lila Lapanja fought back with grit, grace and determination, emanating a

balance of intensity, hard work, devotion, focus and a little bit of mystery. That intensity fueled her to score her career-first World Cup points in 2016 in just her third World Cup start. She harnessed that momentum again with a stand-out first run in the Crans-Montana World Cup Slalom (going from 43rd to 17th) and wrapped up the 2016 season by reclaiming her NorAm Slalom title and mining silver in Slalom at the U.S. Alpine Championships. Lapanja now has her sights on scoring top results on the World Cup and World Championship circuits, and looks forward to her Olympic debut in 2018. In addition to her dedication to ski racing, in 2015, Lapanja was named as an ambassador for the Snow Leopard Trust, dedicated to increasing awareness of this magnificent animal.

Along with maple syrup and Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, skiing is among Vermont’s claims to fame. Vermont consistently ranks third for the most skier visits in the U.S. (after Colorado and California) and it’s not hard to understand why. In the 2014-2015 season, Vermont welcomed a recordbreaking 4,670,903 skiers and riders to visit its slopes. Ideal conditions for the state’s enhanced snowmaking led to a record early opening, then an epic parade of snowstorms gave Vermont the most snow of any state in the continental U.S.—the With its 8,123 skiable acres, national story was that Vermont 1,203 trails and 61 lifts among was the place to be for powder in 2015!

its 17 resorts, the state is well poised to welcome snowsports enthusiasts from far and wide.

With its 8,123 skiable acres, 1,203 trails and 61 lifts among its 17 resorts, the state is well poised to welcome snowsports enthusiasts from far and wide. The state’s top peaks receive an average natural snowfall of 250 inches of snow (almost 21 feet!) each winter. And Killington, the second highest peak in the state, holds both the record for the earliest to open and the latest to close — opening Oct. 1 in 1992, 1993 and 1997, and closing June 22 in 1997. In other words, there are only three months where skiing/riding is not a possibility in Vermont! AUDI FIS SKI WORLD CUP 2016 | 41

100+ YEARS OF SKIING VERMONT Timeline of Vermont firsts in the evolution of

U.S. snow sports

Vermont has played a prominent role in the evolution of skiing and snowboarding. Due to the abundance of resources, ingenuity, and enthusiastic participation, snow sports have long been an integral component of the state’s DNA. With a colorful cast of characters, athletes, and visionaries leading every step of the journey, it’s been a rich history of firsts for Vermont.

1970 1964 Billy Kidd from Stowe wins the nation’s first men’s Olympic silver medal in Slalom. He adds a bronze in Combined. 1966 Vermont boasts over 80 ski areas and a No. 1 ranking in national skier visits. 1970 Burke Mountain Academy becomes the nation’s first ski racing academy. 1972 Barbara Ann Cochran of Richmond, Vt., takes the gold medal at the Sapporo Olympics; siblings Bobby, Marilyn, and Lindy also ski on the World Cup circuit and win multiple U.S. titles. 1977 The country’s first half-pipe is built at Stratton Mountain, which also hosts the first U.S Open Snowboarding Championship. Jake Burton Carpenter starts a snowboard company in Londonderry. Burton Snowboards soon grows to be international. 1982 Suicide Six ski area in Woodstock hosts the first snowboard national championship. 1985 Five-time World Cup podium finisher Mike Holland, also from Norwich, sets the world

distance record in ski jumping with a leap of 186 meters.

SNOWMAKING HORSEPOWER The World Cup Expo Village at the base of Superstar is situated at 2,500 feet above sea level and nearby Killington Peak reaches to 4,241 feet — making it the second highest in the state. This elevation gives the resort an advantage in both effective snowmaking temperatures and natural snowfall. Killington complements Mother Nature’s average of 250 inches of natural snow each winter with a world-class snowmaking system that is capable of covering 600 acres of skiable terrain. When conditions are at their best, Killington’s system can deliver 10 million gallons of water per day to more than 250 snowguns, covering 60 acres of terrain with 12 inches of snow in just 24 hours.

Snowmaking began in earnest on Oct. 10, with production both on North Ridge ski trails Rime and Reason for public use, and upper Superstar trail where the Audi FIS Ski World Cup is being held Nov. 26-27. “Our operations team has snowmaking and grooming down to a science, which makes Killington able to host an event of this magnitude early in the season,” said Mike Solimano, president and general manager of Killington Resort. “Hosting the World Cup is a tremendous opportunity for both Killington and the East in general. We are preparing for a successful event regardless of how much powder Mother Nature drops between now and Thanksgiving.”

In total the snowmaking system has about 88 miles of pipe and 1,700 snow guns (including more than 500 low energy guns). When the season is up and running full-swing, Killington’s 17 snowcats (including three winch cats for grooming steeper slopes) groom more than 40 miles of terrain on a nightly basis.

Want to be a World Cup racer? THE PATH TO THE TOP IS NOT EASY, IT TAKES YEARS OF DEDICATION AND TRAINING By Polly Mikula So you want to be a World Cup racer? To travel the world, make a living ski racing, stand atop the podium with the world’s best Alpine racers? To become an athlete at the highest level requires dedication and training. The top Alpine racers get the chance to compete in a World Cup event only after years of traveling the world trying to improve their ranking points. Despite the challenge, there is a fairly well defined path to the World Cup as dictated by the International Ski Federation (FIS), which governs international competition in Alpine skiing. To begin, a racer needs to be a member of a National Ski Association (NSA) ski club and compete in recognized races. Most athletes begin to get truly serious about racing at 1215 years old! By the time they are competing in the under 18 division many spend weeks traveling to European glaciers or to the

Southern Hemisphere to train in winter-like conditions in the summer. From November to March, serious racers will train several days a week and most weekends. In order to sustain this schedule and keep up with school work, many racers enroll in ski academies. The higher the level the more days racers must devote to training and racing. A top racer can be on the road up to 250 days a year, according to Riikka Rakic who wrote an article on the topic called “Many dream of going pro – but how does it work and how much does it cost?” “Most of the Top 50 World Cup racers are professionals,” said Ana Jelusic, FIS

HOW TO BECOME A WC SKI RACER

“ ” “no one thing will make you the greatest, it is the sum of the parts that make a masterpiece,” said morse, sharing advice he received.

Alpine Media Coordinator and former top tech racer, in Rakic’s article. Those who aim high in ski racing cannot manage another job due to the crazy amount of days on the road, Jelusic explained.

Competitors at the international FIS level attempt to achieve the best time in four disciplines: Slalom, Giant Slalom, Super Giant Slalom, and Downhill. The fifth event, the Combined, employs the Downhill and Slalom for a combined finishing place. The current scoring system was implemented in the 1991/92 season. For every race, points are awarded to the top 30 finishers: 100 points to the winner, 80 for second, 60 for third, winding down to 1 point for 30th place. The racer with the most points at the end of the season in mid-March wins the Cup— the trophy consisting of a 9 kilogram crystal globe. Prizes are also awarded in

each individual race discipline, with a smaller 3.5 kg crystal globe. The U.S. Ski Team published a series on its website (alpine.usskiteam.com) where Alpine Press Officer Megan Harrod asks U.S. Ski Team athletes, “What makes a champ?” Sam Morse, an aspiring young athlete from Sugarloaf, Maine, who earned both the Golden Ski Award (for the top junior skier in the East) and a spot on the U.S. Ski Team in 2014, was the subject of a recent interview.

When asked: What is the biggest piece of advice you have for aspiring kids who want to be sitting where you are today? Morse answered: “Give it all you’ve got and find enjoyment in striving for your own goals, rather than for the affirmation of others. Also, the best advice I’ve ever received was, ‘No one thing will make you the greatest, it is the sum of the parts that make a masterpiece’.”

QA &

WITH TAO SMITH

Head of Killington Mountain School

On helping student athletes to reach their highest potential with world class facilities and coaches

Q

How does the KMS experience differ from public schools and other ski academies in the state? What metrics are used to qualify the athletic, educational and development of its graduates?

College, Bates College, University of Vermont, Montana State and UC Boulder. None of this would have been possible without an incredibly supportive community of teachers, coaches, parents and students who inspire each other to be their best.

First and foremost, KMS is a community. We believe that in a world dictated by individual achievement, it is imperative to have a strong and supportive team behind each student’s success. While we take great pride in our athletic results and college placement, what we are most proud of is the sense of mutual respect and camaraderie that imbues the KMS experience. Last season, KMS had more than 25 current and former students gain accolades ranging from National Championship titles, to World Cup competition, NCAA Division I and III team competition, Pro, Regional and National team placement, and 100 percent college acceptance at schools including Boston College, Middlebury College, Colby

What are the typical characteristics of KMS students? What does the school look for in applicants?

A

58 | 2016 AUDI FIS SKI WORLD CUP

Q A

KMS students are highly motivated and exhibit integrity in each and every endeavor. We look for individuals who are passionate about the athletic lifestyle, and who are focused on “personal best.” Talent is certainly one component that we look for in each applicant, but “heart,” willpower and work ethic can be huge motivating factors that surpass pure talent alone. KMS students are hardworking, and committed to their academic mastery as much as to their athletic goals.

“ ” Q the greatest lessons at killington mountain school come from facing challenges with courage and grace.

The World Cup is coming to the East for the first time in 25 years—the first time in your students’ lifetimes—and it’s coming to Killington! How do you hope the experience of witnessing the best female racers compete on the home hill will influence your students, faculty, coaches, and the race community?

A

Anyone who has witnessed a World Cup in person knows that this is The Show! It is so incredibly inspirational and will have a lasting impact on our students. I can still remember going to my first World Cup, which was at Waterville Valley, N.H., in 1989. These ladies who are coming to Killington are the best of the best, and the energy, excitement, passion and skill at this event will inspire the next Mikaela Shiffrin to go out and conquer giants!

Q

The World Cup will draw many KMS alumni back into the fold at Killington. What is the typical path for student athletes after they graduate? What reports have you heard about their preparation for life beyond KMS?

A

We believe that the greatest lessons at Killington Mountain School come from facing challenges with courage and grace. What our students do is really, really hard.

Whether it is flying down the mountain at 80 miles per hour in a skin-tight suit, learning a new progression in slopestyle, or executing a difficult back-flip in the middle of a 30-second mogul run, KMS students wake up each day and face feelings of fear, doubt and failure. It is in the process of overcoming these emotions and self-doubt where the value of a KMS experience is found. The experience of failure and success provides unmatched opportunities for personal growth and creates a lasting will to persevere.

Q

The World Cup will draw thousands of spectators to Killington. Some will be racers, others may be new to ski racing. Some will be regular visitors to Killington, others may be visiting for the first time. Is there anything else you’d like guests to our area to know about KMS?

A

Fostering a strong work ethic, learning to set goals, living and playing in the mountains, and working in a fun environment with a great group of adults and students is the best way to do education! Our graduates are uniquely prepared for life beyond KMS. Come and check us out! To schedule a visit call 802-422-5671 or visit us online at www.killingtonmountainschool.org.

Play here Outdoor recreation is around every corner! From the mountain trails to the paddling, fishing and swimming opportunities in the dozens of lakes, rivers and reservoirs nearby, outdoor fun is always just minutes away. Those of us who are lucky enough to live in the Killington Valley regularly take a few ski runs before we go to work. It’s a lifestyle, not an anomaly. And, as every local knows, the slopes are much less crowded mid-week! Outdoor family fun is a way of life. Alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, skinning, sledding, skating, snow biking, tubing, snowmobiling - are all accessible and available in our back yards all winter long.

Live here Visitors are often shocked to learn that housing is also quite affordable here in the Killington Valley. The average home price is $172,000 for a 2,000 square foot home compared to $498,000 in the Boston Metro area for the same space. In fact, the median home price in Rutland is 11 percent lower than the national average and rent is 16 percent lower. There is also a range of styles to choose — from small condos in the city or ski mountain slope to rural farm houses to mountain chalets. It’s the quality of life here that’s so appealing and when visitors realize the dream of living here is not out of reach, the dream often starts taking the shape of a plan! You can live here!

LIVE HERE Raise your family here The abundance of natural resources, recreation, local organic food, strong communities, healthy lifestyles and some of the best public schools in the nation, all contribute to making the Killington Valley an ideal place to raise a family. Rutland County is also home to four colleges and universities: Castleton University, Green Mountain College, College of St. Joseph and Community College of Vermont. The Killington Valley is also a very safe community. As a matter of fact, Vermont has been rated as the No. 1 or 2 safest state in every study conducted on the topic over the past several years, according to Mary Cohen, executive director for the Rutland Region Chamber of Commerce. And the community in Rutland is committed to decreasing crime rates even further through an initiative called Project VISION. The community initiative has been so successful, with crime rates dropping significantly in recent years, that it’s been used as a model for other towns across the country. Additionally, over the past few years, Rutland City and NeighborWorks of Western Vermont have invested $2.52 million in rehabbing a 10 block area in the Northwest Neighborhood of Rutland City. This includes tearing down blighted properties, rehabbing homes back to single family, creating parks, fixing the roads and sidewalks—effectively turning the area’s least attractive places into desirable community epicenters. Meet Our

Four-legged Team Rutland Regional Medical Center’s therapy dogs are just one of several complementary therapies we provide to our patients. Our canine friends, along with their dedicated human helpers, bring smiles to faces, and calm the jitters and nerves that often accompany one’s time in a hospital. The caring physicians, clinicians and support staff, (along with some furry friends), work together to deliver compassionate care to our patients every day, 24/7, because that is what being a community hospital is all about.

Rutland Regional is Vermont’s largest community hospital with over 1650 employees dedicated to your care. The hospital provides multiple services covering 37 medical specialties including women’s health, cancer, cardiology, general surgery and orthopaedics to name a few. WHY DO YOU LOVE SKIING THE EAST? Michael Joseph communications manager for killington resort “Skiing the East makes you tough, keeps you in tune with the terrain and offers different conditions every day. And at a place as massive as Killington, surface conditions and even weather will vary by elevation and which direction the trail is facing. Fresh snow offers the adventurous ski and ride community respite from the harsh, cold New England winter; and while we don’t expect fresh snow each and every morning, we enjoy every single snow day to the fullest extent and thank our snowmakers every chance we get.”

lisa gosselin editor of vt. ski & ride and vt. sports magazines “Vermont is where skiing started in the U.S. There’s a history here, a heritage here and a reverence for the paths we ski through the woods and the people who cut them so many years ago. While so much of the world starts to look the same, Vermont—and our ski areas—still holds its character.”

BONNIE MACPHERSON director of public relations at okemo mountain resort “Skiing in the East is an exploration into the heritage of the sport. It is an experiential celebration of variety, challenge, dedication and passion.”

86 | 2016 AUDI FIS SKI WORLD CUP

LOCAL LOVE Merisa Sherman bartender, author of femaleskibum.blogspot.com “I just LOVE skiing on the East Coast—the variable weather and conditions make every day a totally unique adventure. No matter what Mother Nature may bring, just wake up in the morning, head to the mountains and enjoy!!”

parker riehle president of the vermont ski areas association “Vermont’s mountains offer diverse, rugged terrain coupled with state-of-the-art snowmaking and grooming capabilities that ensure the best possible experience on snow, whether you’re a World Cup racer or a casual skier or snowboarder.”

Megan Smith commissioner, vermont department of tourism and marketing “We have so many racing fans that live in our drive market that will be thrilled to see this event. We hope international visitors will come and appreciate the ease of getting here from our nearby major metropolitan areas. Hosting the World Cup in the East makes so much sense.”

“I have a confession to make: I’m a recovering ski bum. Ok, maybe it’s not a secret; or, more likely, maybe I’m not recovered at all. At some point I decided to trade a career rolling burritos in a Western mountain town for a more professional way of life back East. Despite the lifestyle shift, the sensation of sliding on snow remains my cold weather muse. My ski days are full of adventure, good friends and, naturally, beer. Recently, a 5 a.m. wake up call was punctuated by 10 inches of hard-earned bluebird pow and one hell of an icicle beard in what culminated in a perma-grin to start the work day. The joys of après-ski are obvious, but when you spend 40 hours a week behind a desk, après-work creeps into your vocabulary, too.”

EAT HERE There is perhaps no holiday so foodfocused as Thanksgiving. Turkeys, pumpkin pie, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce and an assortment of other dishes will crowd tables as families and friends gather to feast on the autumn's bounty. For those planning to spend Thanksgiving in Killington this season in advance of the World Cup races, you don’t have to miss the feast! Many restaurants will be opening to accommodate increased crowds

and will be serving locally raised turkey as well as locally grown pumpkin, potatoes, squash and greens from a neighborhood farm, complemented by tasty local micro brews. And the best news is this local food is available and served year round at many area dining establishments. If you have plans outside Vermont for the holiday feast, enjoy the tastes of Vermont whenever you do make it up here. Being a spectator is hard work! Fuel up!

SHOP HERE After a hearty meal of turkey, mashed potatoes, pumpkin pie (and so much more), instead of going to a big box store to camp out for the most popular Black Friday discount, get a good night's sleep and head to the ski slopes in the morning for some fresh air and exercise.

Area shops will be open when you’re finished and they’re not likely to run out of inventory, as they’re freshly stocked for the season. Ski and snowboard shops will have the newest styles of the season and many stores also offer unique crafts. Find locally-made gifts to start your Christmas list instead of fighting the crowds for commercialized merchandise! We promise, the experience will be much nicer and you’ll still be able to ski in the morning and take part in World Cup activities that same night.

STAY HERE Ski and play longer! Many thousands of people come to the Killington area each year to ski and play in the mountains. But then they leave, sad to say goodbye. Why not stay and play longer? Perhaps the whole season? Often those that make the trip every weekend have invested in a second home or condo so they can do just that —stay and play more often and for longer periods of time. Condos are virtually maintenance-free and start at around $30K (for an estimated mortgage of about $100/month, according to Zillow. com) plus homeowner association fees. Others choose to buy ski homes and are shocked that they can buy a house twice as big as they thought for half the price!

“Houses and condos are as affordable as they have ever been. There are unbelievable values, making now the time to buy,” said Joe Rodolfy, a loan originator with HomeBridge Financial Services in Rutland, in an interview with the Mountain Times mid-October. “Prices have already bottomed,” he added, noting he’s just had his busiest spring and summer for condos in Killington. Kyle Kershner, broker/owner of Killington Pico Realty, agreed. “It remains a buyer’s market and is an exceptional time to be a buyer with low property prices, adequate inventory, and mortgage rates remaining at historically low levels,” he said.

TREE HOUSE In 1996, Vermont architect David Sellers, working with contractor Rick Moore, was tasked with creating a Killington home that featured simple, natural materials and a connection to the surrounding environment—with trees in the forefront of the design. Dubbed “the tree house” because of the extensive use of un-sawn timber, the home expresses local flavor, with about one third of the vertical supports harvested right from the property. With no foundation so as not to disturb the topsoil, the structure is bound by steel pipes inserted into drilled holes in the bedrock below. 128 | 2016 AUDI FIS SKI WORLD CUP
