SUPER NATURE is an online shop that sells unusual species of plants (like carnivorous plants) and unique design of plant arrangements for plant lovers of special appetite. It brings greenness, wildness, freshness and joy to people’s homes. The plants are planted on special bottles like laboratory apparatus, making them look dangerous (yet attractive) and playful. Minimal trimming is conducted on plants in order to keep their natural shape of wildness. Special nutrient solutions guarantee prosperity of the plants’, make it easier to keep. Different collections can be used for various purposes, such as home decoration, festival celebration, thank-you presents, etc.

DEVELOPMENT

THE BABYLON LOTTERY

THE BABYLON LOTTERY SPECULATIVE DESIGN

INTRODUCTION

NARRATIVE

The inspiration of this project comes from dice. The nature of a dice is a random number generator, and a true random number generator exists in a chaotic system. That’s why similar beginnings of a billiard game would never have the exact same results.

The Ritual

Our society is also a form of chaotic system. One fact about chaotic system is that a tiniest change would lead to a totally different result. This is also known as the “butterfly effect” and explains why our lives are so unpredictable.

This may sound completely absurd, but I want to raise a question through this project: is it ever possible to run a society on total randomness? I want to inform people of the fact that what we have now to a large extent is an outcome of chance, we should not take them for granted. I also want people to question the rationality of such lottery systems-are they as fair as they seem to be?

As it is mentioned in Borges’ original text, “every free men was automatically entered in the sacred draws, which were held in the labyrinths of the god on each sixtieth night and which, until the next round, decided a man's fate.” This event is considered as a sacred ritual that every (free) man should take part in.

Secret Temple

Described as “the labyrinths of the god” in the novel, in this project, this sacred place of drawing lottery is built as a secret temple for audience. To visualize the maze, I made a long stairway as a metaphor of the hardship of getting to the temple. The goddess of fortune sits in a casino table in which your lot will be thrown.

The Lottery

In Borges’ novel, this lottery should include limitless possibilities. For this project, I decided to narrow them down to certain categories. Although the concept of running a society base on total chance sounds absurd, this Babylon lottery system actually exists in every aspects of our lives. We draw lottery to decide if we could get a visa, or the chance to go to a school, etc.

In this project, I explore a form of adding “chances” into our society, which is borrowed from Jorge Luis Borges’ novel “The Lottery in Babylon”. The story describes a mythical Babylon in which all activities are dictated by an all-encompassing lottery, which is mandatory and free for everyone. I created this virtual space based on Borges’ story and the existing lottery system in our society. In this space, you can draw your lottery and ideally, you should be doing what the lottery ask you to in the following 60 days. All kinds of results can be drawn-you may get promoted, meet the person you have always wanted to meet, or you may be put in jail, you lose a mount of money. It is also possible that you are asked to do insignificant things like freeing a bird from a towel.

Sketches for Babylon Lottery Inc.

The Experience

I imagined the actual experience and procedure a user would have in this virtual space. I want to create a cold and robotic atmosphere for users to feel the relentlessness of the lottery system.

MODELING AND RENDERING

THE LOTTERY There will be several options of different categories of lotteries to be drawn, this include education, health, VISA, etc. Each represent an actual type of lottery system that exist in our daily lives and simulates the real odds. The category of Minor comes from original context of the novel of The Lottery in Babylon.

When searching, I found that selling of bras has dropped, especially bra with steel support, because people stay at home more and the need for clothing has changed from aesthetic to comfort. For female, they wear bras less than before, and they attach more importance to comfort level of bras.

Sulli: lots of comments after the first time I post no-bra picture I could’ve escaped with fear But I did not, and the reason is that I wanted to break prejudice on this topic

INITIAL IDEAS

BACKGROUND In the project of No-bra in China, I found that the following facts seem to be most noticeable: • Women are not really satisfied about their breasts; • Women are sometimes too shy to talk about boobs; • Most women feel restrained when wearing bras; • Most women would like to go no-bra If the social environment encourages them.

INTRODUCTION As a design response to the project of No-bra in China, I designed the website of booooooob.com, which is is a website which aims to improve women’s satisfaction towards their breasts and embrace no-bra. This website is a combination of speculative design and participatory design-it allows users to reflect on the question that are bras necessary for women, to show their own ideas of beautiful boobs and take part in the virtual ritual of burning bras.

INTRODUCTION Desertification is a global environmental issue that has serious negative effects on the economy and ecology. Green Grid Society s an existing project which aims to harness desertification in China by organizing volunteer activities in college. In this project, I explored development of Green Grid Society by integrating a campus-based online APP and offline volunteering activity.

GREEN GRID SOCIETY

Green Grid Society is a campusbased non-profit organization which aims to gather efforts from college and commits to harnessing desertification in China.

The VI of this project involves the idea of green squares extending from outside to the inside, which represents the volunteering activity and the wish of letting green space cover up deserts. I believe this project will bring together the strength of college students and improve desertification more efficiently.

ONLINE COURSE SYNDROME

Introduction In the past few months, I have been taking online courses from home. In these days, I hardly left my house and spent almost every minutes taking courses or doing homework. I would sit in front of my desk all day long without talking to anyone face to face. The feeling of isolation along with pressure from courses made me depressed and stressed out. In the next few months, I will still be taking online courses from home. The issue that is now most urgent to me is to learn to deal with my depression and all the stress in the following semester. Therefore, I made this series of motion posters to express my feelings. I select three kinds of emotion that stand out the most: how I become a slave of my schedule, how desperate I was of wanting to go out and how I feel trapped inside of my house. I choose the smirky face to represent the way that I try to cheer myself up and stay positive, pretending nothing is wrong.
