Robin Ormerod has just returned from across the pond where he represented England in he Townsend Cup alongside his brother Eden; although the visiting team didn’t manage the win, they put up a strong fight with USA’s Geronimo Obregon commenting, “It’s tough to go around them and you’ve got to go through them, it’s hard. They’re competitive.” Based out of his family’s Club, Druids Lodge, we spoke to Robin about his passion for young horses and training

What is your biggest passion and why?

My biggest passion is horse training, there’s something magical about spending time alone working with a horse, each relationship is unique and it’s fascinating how we can form a common language with horses that allows us to do awesome things like polo together.

Hardest opponent?

Max Charlton, not an easy guy to mark in the arena!

What is your all-time best polo memory?

It would have to be winning the Arena Gold Cup with Harold Hodges and Seb Hancock.

Favourite film and why?

Interstellar, I love scifi and it’s got amazing visual effects, a good story, and great acting.

Favourite song/album?

Heavy is the Head, Stormzy.

Favourite food/dish?

Anything with pasta, particularly a good pasta bake.

Favourite hobby outside of polo?

Astronomy. There’s nothing appealing about staying up late at night outside in freezing temperatures in the middle of the winter, but add many layers, a flask of hot chocolate and a telescope, I’m in.

Who were/are your favourite teammates?

It’s got to be the New Forest team from Pony Club. Tilly Fitzwilliams, Jon Perry and Tati Penfold. So many good memories.

Most prized possession?

Our young horses.

Favourite celebrity and why?

David Attenborough, probably the most influential person in terms of conservation and tackling climate change in history, and who doesn’t love him?!

Best holiday destination & activity?

Going on horseback safari in Kenya was an unforgettable experience.

Best pony and why?

A homebred mare called Rhythm. This season was her first season and she already lets me make plays outdoors that I could only make in the arena before.

Are you passionately superstitious?

No but I think it might be bad luck for me to say that…

Describe yourself in three words…

Nerdy, curious, weird.

One thing which would surprise us about you?

I have a Masters degree in physics.
