Polo Benefit for argentine charities

Polo and Benefit in Meadowbrook Polo Club.

More than 300 polo enthusiasts enjoyed a world class polo match at a charity event hosted by Nacho Figueras and the New York Chapter of HelpArgentina. The benefit event, held at the Meadowbrook Polo Club, was organized to support the work of two argentine charities, Cruzada Argentina and HelpArgentina. The funds raised will allow Cruzada Argentina to refurbish a school in an impoverished region of the argentine province of Corrientes and will support HelpArgentina’s work to strengthen the argentine social sector by connecting international donors with high impact non-profits and by promoting a culture of giving among the argentine expatriate community The hard fought match was won by the Black Watch Team captained by Nacho Figueras, (6 goal) which also included Marinano Aguerre (10 goal), Pablo Pieres (8 goal) and Satinger Garcha (2 goal).

The members of the opposing Deutsche Bank Team were Nic Roldan (8 goal) captain, Christian Laprida (9 goal), Lucas Criado (9 goal), and Luis Rinaldini. Nacho’s wife, Delfina Blaquier, an Argentine photographer and former model, also attended the match with their 3 children Hilario, Aurora, and Artemio. After the match Nacho said “I’ve been doing charity things for a while, but I think I finally found the organization that I really want to work with. It’s a great bridge between people here who want to help, and the people and projects who really need it. It was great polo today, and it’s so fun to be able to do what you love while helping kids.” Marina Michelutti of HelpArgentina commented “we approached Nacho because we view him as a role model, someone genuinely committed to making a difference in the world – he embodies the spirit of HelpArgentina”.

The success of the event was made possible by the generous support of Deutsche Bank, Ralph Lauren Fragrances, Piaget, Proskauer, Delta Airlines, and Pololine. The spectators watched the match from tents elegantly appointed by Poltrona Frau y Cassina while enjoying the wines of Bodegas Renacer and Veuve Clicquot and water provided by Hint. A luxurious live auction was held during half-time featuring items donated by St Regis, Nervous Waters, JJ. Wing Shooting, Punta Caballos and Veraty Lodge, and Maserati, as well as a personal polo lesson donated by Nacho. Beautifully crafted prizes for the players were supplied by Aracano, Mariano Toledo and Pehuen. Ignacio “Nacho” Figueras began playing polo in his native country Argentina and turned pro at the age of 17, playing at various locations in Europe before arriving in Bridgehampton, New York in 1999. He currently holds the position of captain of Black Watch Polo Team and is ranked as one of the top 100 polo players in the word. He has also been the face of Ralph Lauren's Black Label line since 2005.

Grand Champions 2010 Piaget Black and Piaget White in the podium.

In the main field of Grand Champions Polo Club, Piaget black opened the scoring with a goal of Nicolas Roldan for Piaget Black in the first chukker before Isabella Wolf got Piaget White on the scoreboard with her first goal of the game. Marc Ganzi gave Piaget Black a 3-1 lead with a goal of his own in the opening and with Goals from Lucas Lalor and Nick Roldan in the second chukker put the 5-2 in the middle the second chukker. Leo Mandelbaum struck first in the third chukker with a goal followed by back to back field goals from Marc Ganzi, and Piaget Black found itself on top of an 8-2 score. Melissa Ganzi tapped a long shot at goal from teammate Juan Bollini through the goal posts for Piaget White, but left the field at halftime trailing by five goals, 8-3.

Piaget White combined determined defense with goals from Melissa Ganzi and a penalty conversion from Wolf, cutting the Piaget Black lead to three goals, 8-5. Piaget White continued to rally into the fifth chukker, getting goals from Wolf and Bollini while allowing a single goal from Marc Ganzi. Piaget black continued to lead, but the margin had been reduced to just two goals, 9-7. Wolf’s fourth goal of the game brought Piaget to within a goal, 9-8, in the final chukker, but Marc Ganzi and his Piaget black teammates weren’t about to let this game slip away. Hard-nosed defense and a final goal from Nic Roldan shut the door on Piaget White as Piaget Black rode off the field with a 10-8 win.

There were plenty of trophies to be handed out after the match, with Piaget’s Lauren Duffy presenting Piaget White’s Lolo Castagnola with a Piaget Polo 45 Flyback Chronograph watch for earning Most Valuable Player honors. Marc Ganzi’s Mariana was named Best Playing Pony. Marc Ganzi led the Piaget Black team with four goals. Roldan scored three times and Lalor and Mandelbaum each registered single goals. Wolf’s four goals led the Piaget White attack with team captain Melissa Ganzi scoring twice and Castagnola and Bollini adding single goals in the win. Lolo Catagnola playing for Piaget White.

The Top of Bridgehampton for AlegrĂa

AlegrĂa Polo Team won the Mercedes-Benz Polo Challenge.

La Alegria won the Mercedes-Benz Polo Challenge in Bridgehampton Polo Club after defeating Circa 13-11. Both teams broke through to the semifinals with an untarnished 2-0 winning record. La Alegria had already vanquished Equuleus for the second time this tournament in the semifinals, walking away with a comfortable 13-9 victory. Circa, on the other hand, did not have such a smooth semifinal and struggled against an unrelenting Heathcote team.

The opening chukker of final game positioned Circa with a one-goal lead due to its lower handicapped rating. But the lead was short lived as Fred Mannix Jr. drew first blood for La Alegria with a goal in the first few seconds of the chukker. His strike was quickly followed by a goal by Mariano Gracida, and a penalty from Mannix to give La Alegria a 3-1 lead after the first chukker. Circa woke up in the second chukker with LaPrida putting the first goal from the field on the board for his team followed by two

penalty goals, which gave Circa a one-goal lead. But their lead was again short lived as Mannix retaliated with a succession of field goals and penalties in the second and third chukkers, leaving Circa trailing 9-6 by halftime. Mannix, the Canadian 6goaler, was on fire in the first half, leading

his team with seven of its nine goals. LaPrida finally evened the score with yet another penalty goal in the beginning of the sixth chukker. The match was at the tipping point for both teams, as all the months of preparation and training came to a head in the last chukker of the final.

As the game was tied, a late foul by Circa gave La Alegria a penalty, which veteran 10-goaler Aguerre converted with ease to secure a one-goal lead. But then a foul by a La Alegria player gave Circa another penalty and the opportunity it needed to tie the game for the second time. But this time, LaPrida faltered, striking the ball and sending it just wide of the goal posts leaving La Alegria with the lead in the waning seconds of the game. La Alegria kept possession of the ball, running the clock out and trying to prevent any attempts by Circa to steal the ball. Then in the last 10 seconds of the game, Mannix sent the ball to Aguerre,

who carried it all the way down the field and through the goal mouth as the whistle was blown to end the game at 13-11, making La Alegria the champions of the 2010 Mercedes-Benz Challenge Cup. Mannix led the La Alegria team with eight goals and received the Most Valuable Player award, while Aguerre scored four times and Gracida added a goal to their win.
